A temporal graph is a sequence of graphs, indexed by discrete time steps, with a fixed vertex set but with an edge set that is able to change over time. In the temporal graph exploration problem, an agent wants to visit all the vertices of a given temporal graph. In the classical model, at each time step the agent can either stay where they are, or move along one edge. In this work we add a constraint called restlessness that forces the agent to move along one edge at each time step. We mainly focus on (infinite) periodical temporal graphs. We show that if the period is 2 one can decide in polynomial time whether exploring the whole graph is possible or not, while this problem turns out to be NP-hard for any period p ≥ 3. In this work, we propose a 3D fully convolutional architecture for video saliency prediction that employs hierarchical supervision on intermediate maps (referred to as conspicuity maps) generated using features extracted at different abstraction levels. We provide the base hierarchical learning mechanism with two techniques for domain adaptation and domain-specific learning. For the former, we encourage the model to unsupervisedly learn hierarchical general features using gradient reversal at multiple scales, to enhance generalization capabilities on datasets for which no annotations are provided during training. As for domain specialization, we employ domain-specific operations (namely, priors, smoothing and batch normalization) by specializing the learned features on individual datasets in order to maximize performance. The results of our experiments show that the proposed model yields state-of-the-art accuracy on supervised saliency prediction. When the base hierarchical model is empowered with domain-specific modules, performance improves, outperforming state-of-the-art models on three out of five metrics on the DHF1K benchmark and reaching the second-best results on the other two. When, instead, we test it in an unsupervised domain adaptation setting, by enabling hierarchical gradient reversal layers, we obtain performance comparable to supervised state-of-the-art. A 2-edge-coloured graph G is supereulerian if G contains a spanning closed trail in which the edges alternate in colours. We show that for general 2-edge-coloured graphs it is NP-complete to decide whether the graph is supereulerian. An eulerian factor of a 2-edge-coloured graph is a collection of vertex-disjoint induced subgraphs which cover all the vertices of G such that each of these subgraphs is supereulerian. We give a polynomial algorithm to test whether a 2-edge-coloured graph has an eulerian factor and to produce one when it exists. A 2-edge-coloured graph is (trail-)colour-connected if it contains a pair of alternating (u, v)-paths ((u, v)-trails) whose union is an alternating closed walk for every pair of distinct vertices u, v. We prove that a 2-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph is supereulerian if and only if it is colour-connected and has an eulerian factor. A 2-edge-coloured graph is M-closed if xz is an edge of G whenever some vertex u is joined to both x and z by edges of the same colour. M-closed 2-edge-coloured graphs, introduced in Contreras-Balbuena et al. (Discret Math Theoret Comput Sci 21:1, 2019), form a rich generalization of 2-edge-coloured complete graphs. We show that if G is obtained from an M-closed 2-edge-coloured graph H by substituting independent sets for the vertices of H, then G is supereulerian if and only if G is trail-colour-connected and has an eulerian factor. Finally we discuss 2-edge-coloured complete multipartite graphs and show that such a graph may not be supereulerian even if it is trail-colour-connected and has an eulerian factor.

The use of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) has increased greatly and their potential effects on human health need to be investigated. Differentiated Caco-2 cells were treated from the apical (Ap) and the basolateral (Bl) compartment with different concentrations (0, 10, 50 and 100 μg/mL) of commercial or sonochemically synthesized (sono) CuO NPs. Sono NPs were prepared in ethanol (CuOe) or in water (CuOw), obtaining CuO NPs differing in size and shape. The effects on the Caco-2 cell barrier were assessed via transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) evaluation just before and after 1, 2 and 24 hours of exposure and through the analysis of cytokine release and biomarkers of oxidative damage to proteins after 24 hours. Sono CuOe and CuOw NPs induced a TEER decrease with a dose-dependent pattern after Bl exposure. Conversely, TEER values were not affected by the Ap exposure to commercial CuO NPs and, concerning the Bl exposure, only the lowest concentration tested (10 μg/mL) caused a TEER decrease after 24 hours of exposure. An increased release of interleukin-8 was induced by sono CuO NPs after the Ap exposure to 100 μg/mL and by sono and commercial CuO after the Bl exposure to all the concentrations. No effects of commercial and sono CuO NPs on interleukin-6 (with the only exception of 100 μg/mL Bl commercial CuO) and tumor necrosis factor-α release were observed. Ap treatment with commercial and CuOw NPs was able to induce significant alterations on specific biomarkers of protein oxidative damage (protein sulfhydryl group oxidation and protein carbonylation).

This case report describes suspected myopathy or myelopathy in a 5-year-old Clydesdale gelding following general anaesthesia for sarcoid removal. The lowest mean arterial pressure was 67 mm Hg. Hyperlactataemia and tachycardia were observed during anaesthesia prompting abortion of surgery. The horse was unable to stand with assistance from a specialised sling. Azotaemia and hyperkalaemia developed in recovery and worsened despite therapeutic interventions. Euthanasia was performed given the grave prognosis. Post-mortem examination was not carried out but could have provided a definitive diagnosis. Specific factors have been identified in the prevention of post-anaesthetic myopathy, including maintenance of adequate tissue perfusion and oxygenation and careful positioning. Potential improvements in the anaesthetic management of this case in relation to these factors are discussed.

Purpose With an increase in the number of adapted sports, the need to monitor sports performance in people with different abilities has grown. Indeed, a thorough evaluation of the sports gesture could prevent the occurrence of injuries, enable a continuous performance assessment, and allow to verify the compliance of the requirements for the competitions. Gesture kinematics provides an assessment of performance, while the muscle activities reveal the underlying strategies adopted by each athlete. In this context, we propose an instrumented evaluation to assess performance in Para-powerlifting. Our goal is to define and test a setup and a protocol to quantitatively assess the execution of bench press exercise in athletes with different abilities. Methods We recruited an unimpaired athlete and three Paralympic athletes. They were requested to execute the bench press exercise while we recorded muscle activity and kinematic data from the upper body. We investigated the sport gesture by extracting parameters describing coordination, symmetry, and synchronism between arms, and motor variability while repeating the gesture. Results Paralympic athletes performed the gestures with higher coordination between arms and low variability across repetitions compared to the unimpaired athlete, who was not at the Olympic level. All participants obtained similar kinematic performance by adopting different muscle strategies. Conclusions This study is a proof of concept that the instrumented evaluation proposed here can allow to conduct a complete assessment of the bench press exercise, in terms of kinematics, muscle activity and performance in athletes with different abilities.

Two meteorite pieces have been recovered in Italy, near the town of Cavezzo (Modena), on 2020 January 4th. The associated fireball was observed on the evening of New Year’s Day 2020 by eight all-sky cameras of the PRISMA fireball network, a partner of FRIPON. The computed trajectory had an inclination angle of approximately 68° and a velocity at infinity of 12.8 km s−1. Together with the relatively low terminal height, estimated as 21.5 km, those values were indicating the significant possibility of a meteorite dropping event, as additionally confirmed by the non-zero residual total mass. The strewn-field was computed taking into account the presence of two bright light flashes, revealing that the meteoroid had been very likely subject to fragmentation. Three days after the event, two samples, weighing 3.1 and 52.2 g, were collected as a result of a dedicated field search and thanks to the involvement of the local people. The two pieces were immediately recognized as freshly fallen fragments of meteorite. The computed orbital elements, compared with the ones of known Near-Earth Asteroids from the NEODyS database, are compatible with one asteroid only; 2013 VC10. The estimated original mass of the meteoroid, 3.5 kg, and size, approximately 13 cm, is so far the smallest among the current 35 cases in which meteorites were recovered from precise strewn-field computation thanks to observational data. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of accurate processing of fireball network data even on challenging events generated by small size meteoroids.

Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, frequently related to oxidative stress and inflammation. Dietary antioxidant compounds improve heart health. Here, we estimate the oxidative grade and inflammation in the heart of dietary-induced obese (DIO) rats after exposure to a high-fat diet compared to a standard diet. The effects of tart cherry seed powder and seed powder plus tart cherries juice were explored. Morphological analysis and protein expressions were performed in the heart. The oxidative status was assessed by the measurement of protein oxidation and 4-hydroxynonenal in samples. Immunochemical and Western blot assays were performed to elucidate the involved inflammatory markers as proinflammatory cytokines and cellular adhesion molecules. In the obese rats, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was accompanied by an increase in oxidative state proteins and lipid peroxidation. However, the intake of tart cherries significantly changed these parameters. An anti-inflammatory effect was raised from tart cherry consumption, as shown by the downregulation of analyzed endothelial cell adhesion molecules and cytokines compared to controls. Tart cherry intake should be recommended as a dietary supplement to prevent or counteract heart injury in obese conditions.

Video saliency prediction has recently attracted attention of the research community, as it is an upstream task for several practical applications. However, current solutions are particularly computationally demanding, especially due to the wide usage of spatio-temporal 3D convolutions. We observe that, while different model architectures achieve similar performance on benchmarks, visual variations between predicted saliency maps are still significant. Inspired by this intuition, we propose a lightweight model that employs multiple simple heterogeneous decoders and adopts several practical approaches to improve accuracy while keeping computational costs low, such as hierarchical multi-map knowledge distillation, multi-output saliency prediction, unlabeled auxiliary datasets and channel reduction with teacher assistant supervision. Our approach achieves saliency prediction accuracy on par or better than state-of-the-art methods on DFH1K, UCF-Sports and Hollywood2 benchmarks, while enhancing significantly the efficiency of the model.
