This paper introduces a new probability model called the modified Gompertz distribution from the base Gompertz distribution by combining its hazard function with first and second degree polynomial (linear and quadratic) functions. The new probability model is found to have more flexible hazard shapes with strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and bumping behaviors. Properties of the new probability model are derived and discussed. Simulation studies and data fitting are conducted. The modified Gompertz distribution is found to fit better to four datasets as compared to the base Gompertz distribution and also six other models which are Topp‐Leone Gompertz, Generalized Gompertz, Exponentiated Gompertz Exponential, Power Gompertz, Gompertz Ampadu Lomax, and Exponential Generalized Extended Gompertz probability distributions. The modified Gompertz distribution is a contribution to the field of statistical theory, having very interesting shapes of hazard function can have applications to survival, waiting time, and reliability data analyses. Any statistical inference from simulation study and data fitting to real‐world data can possibly lead to new knowledge in applied probability, statistics, and application field such as life science, health, and engineering. This article takes a novel approach to fragmentary Roman comic playwright Caecilius Statius by exploring the titles attested for his comedies. Informed by Genette's theory on the title qua paratext, it argues that titles are distinct artifacts of Caecilius' dramatic production designed to circulate without the texts they label and, consequently, it treats them as legitimate objects of interpretation in and of themselves. Analysis of ten titles in both Greek and Latin reveals that Caecilius Statius' titles are polysemous, bilingual and profoundly meaningful in their engagement with the genre of New Comedy and with translation as a social and cultural phenomenon of middle republican Rome. But given that the titles of Roman comedy are largely uninvestigated by scholarship, this piece begins by arguing for their author -ity, setting forth the evidence for comic titles' origins, function and transmission. In so doing, it demonstrates the palliata 's textuality and challenges the communis opinio regarding comic scripts' passage from stage to page. Groundwater, widely used for supplying drinking water to populations, is a vital resource that must be managed sustainably, which requires a thorough understanding of its diverse physico-chemical and bacteriological characteristics. This study, based on a 27-year extraction from the Sise-Eaux database (1993–2020), focused on the island of Corsica (72,000 km2), which is diverse in terms of altitude and slopes and features a strong lithological contrast between crystalline Corsica and metamorphic and sedimentary Corsica. Following logarithmic conditioning of the data (662 water catchments, 2830 samples, and 15 parameters) and distinguishing between spatial and spatiotemporal variances, a principal component analysis was conducted to achieve dimensionality reduction and to identify the processes driving water diversity. In addition, the spatial structure of the parameters was studied. The analysis notably distinguishes a seasonal determinism for bacterial contamination (rain, runoff, bacterial transport, and contamination of catchments) and a more strictly spatial determinism (geographic, lithological, and land use factors). The behavior of each parameter allowed for their classification into seven distinct groups based on their average coordinates on the factorial axes, accounting for 95% of the dataset's total variance. Several strategies can be considered for the inventory and mapping of groundwater, namely, (1) establishing quality parameter distribution maps, (2) dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis followed by two sub-options: (2a) mapping factorial axes or (2b) establishing a typology of parameters based on their behavior and mapping a representative for each group. In this work, we propose a novel family of procedures for deriving a discrete counterpart to a continuous probability distribution. They are based on a class of distances between cumulative distribution functions, including the Cramér, the Cramér-von Mises, and the Anderson-Darling distances as particular cases. The discrete counterpart is defined and derived as the random variable which minimizes its distance to the assigned continuous probability distribution among all the discrete random variables supported on the set of integers (or positive integers). Applications are provided with reference to the exponential and the normal distributions, among others; the discrete counterparts are derived, and their main properties are discussed, also in comparison with the one obtained through an existing discretization technique based on the preservation of the cumulative distribution function at integer values. Parameter estimation for these discrete analogs is discussed, along with an analysis of two real datasets, where they are compared in terms of goodness-of-fit with some popular discrete distributions. Furthermore, in order to highlight the effectiveness and the benefits derived from the proposed discretization procedures, we illustrate two practical applications in actuarial science and in reliability engineering. In the former case, the problem of determining the distribution of the total claims amount for a non-life insurance portfolio is considered, where the claim sizes can be modelled as iid random variables, and the number of claims is random as well. Actuaries use a recursive calculation method based on Panjer's formula, which requires an appropriate discretization of the individual claim distribution, and therefore the proposed procedures can be used. Since we consider two simple cases where the distribution of the total claims amount is analytically acquirable, the efficacy of the discretization procedures in the final approximation can be easily assessed and turns out to be satisfactory, especially when compared to the existing discretization. The latter case considers the determination of the reliability parameter for a complex stress-strength model. Here, the approximation by discretization is compared to Monte Carlo simulation and shown to be relevant: with a comparable if not smaller computational effort, discretization leads to similar results as simulation. Such discretizations can also naturally be applied to more complex problems such as scenario generation in stochastic programming. R code for this article is provided as supplementary material. Human leishmaniasis is facing important epidemiological changes in Southern Europe, driven by increased urbanization, climate changes, emerging of new animal reservoirs, shifts in human behavior and a growing population of immunocompromised and elderly individuals. In this evolving epidemiological landscape, we analyzed the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of human leishmaniasis in the Tuscany region of Central Italy. Through a multicentric retrospective analysis, we collected clinical and demographic data about all cases of leishmaniasis recorded between 2018 and 2023. We observed 176 cases of human leishmaniasis, with 128 (72.7%) visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and 47 (26.7%) cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Among these, 92.2% of VL and 85.1% of CL cases were autochthonous. The cumulative incidence of autochthonous human leishmaniasis was 0.22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2018, but reached 1.81/100,000 in 2023. We identified three main areas of transmission: around the city of Florence (North-East Tuscany), around Grosseto city (South-West Tuscany) and Elba Island. Our findings confirm that the epidemiology of leishmaniasis is undergoing significant changes in Central Italy. Awareness towards this emerging health threat and surveillance strategies need to be improved in order to reliably assess the disease's burden. Further research is needed in a "One-Health" perspective, to clarify the epidemiological dynamics at the environmental, reservoir, vector and human levels. The role of climate change and specific climatic factors affecting the epidemiological patterns of human leishmaniasis should be assessed. Groundwater, a vital resource for providing drinking water to populations, must be managed sustainably to ensure its availability and quality. This study aims to assess the groundwater quality in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region (~50,000 km2) of France and identify the processes responsible for its variability. Data were extracted from the Sise-Eaux database, resulting in an initial sparse matrix comprising 8723 samples and over 100 bacteriological and physicochemical parameters. From this, a refined full matrix of 3569 samples and 22 key parameters was selected. The data underwent logarithmic transformation before applying principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset. The analysis of the spatial structure, using both raw and directional variograms, revealed a categorization of parameters, grouping major ions according to the regional lithology. Bacteriological criteria (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus) displayed strong spatial variability over short distances, whereas iron (Fe) and nitrates showed intermediate spatial characteristics between bacteriology and major ions. The PCA allowed the creation of synthetic maps, with the first seven capturing 80% of the information contained in the database, effectively replacing the individual parameter maps. These synthetic maps highlighted the different processes driving the spatial variations in each quality criterion. On a regional scale, the variations in fecal contamination were found to be multifactorial, with significant influences captured by the first four principal components. The 22 parameters can be grouped into six categories based on their spatial and temporal variations, allowing for the redefinition of a resource management and monitoring strategy that is adapted to the identified spatial patterns and processes at the regional scale, while also reducing analytical costs. Objective: Prostate cancer, the second most diagnosed cancer among men, requires precise diagnostic techniques to ensure effective treatment. This review explores the technological advancements, optimal application conditions, and benefits of targeted prostate biopsies facilitated by multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to compare traditional 12-core systematic biopsies guided by transrectal ultrasound with targeted biopsy techniques using mpMRI. We searched electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 2015 to December 2024 using keywords such as "targeted prostate biopsy", "fusion prostate biopsy", "cognitive prostate biopsy", "MRI-guided biopsy", and "transrectal ultrasound prostate biopsy". Studies comparing various biopsy methods were included, and data extraction focused on study characteristics, patient demographics, biopsy techniques, diagnostic outcomes, and complications. Conclusion: mpMRI-guided targeted biopsies enhance the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer while reducing unnecessary biopsies and the detection of insignificant cancers. These targeted approaches preserve or improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes, minimizing the risks associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment. By utilizing mpMRI, targeted biopsies allow for precise targeting of suspicious regions within the prostate, providing a cost-effective method that reduces the number of biopsies performed. China and India are both late comers to industrialization. Both adopted similar economic development strategies after World War II, but the per capita GDP diverged significantly in the last 40 years. While economic growth and development have many components, we explain the difference in economic performance by emphasizing the difference in state capacity in the two economies. A country's state capacity is affected by culture and history. China established a unified language and culture two thousand years ago that enabled it to develop strong state capacity. With a strong state capacity, China made crucial investments in infrastructure and in key heavy industries and developed technological capabilities to help start and sustain growth. India, on the other hand, is a country segmented by religion, caste, and language which has hindered the development of effective state capacity, and thus complementary state investments to spur economic growth. Moreover, India has up to now relied more heavily on expansion of its service sector compared to China, which has hindered its exports, a crucial element that helped China's economy. India's future industrialization crucially depends on national integration and concomitant strengthening of state capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
