Numerous solids including gas hydrates, waxes, and asphaltenes have the potential to form in the production lines of gas and oil fields. This creates a highly non-ideal scenario as the accumulation of said species leads to flow assurance issues, especially with long-term processes like deposition. Since an ever-increasing amount of material is deposited in place at the pipe surface, production stoppage or active mitigation efforts become inevitable. The latter production issues result in increased safety risks and operational expenditures. Therefore, a cost-effective, passive deposition mitigation technology, such as a pipeline coating or surface treatment is especially appealing. The ability to address multiple pipeline flow assurance issues simultaneously without actively disrupting production would represent a dramatic step forward in this area. This study is part of a long-term ongoing effort that evaluates the performance and application of an omniphobic surface treatment for solids deposition prevention in industrially relevant systems. In particular, this specific work concentrates on the efficacy and robustness of the treatment under fully flowing conditions. The apparatuses utilized for this include two flowloops: a lab-scale, high-pressure flowloop for gas hydrate and surface treatment durability studies, and a bench-scale, atmospheric pressure loop for crude oil and asphaltene experiments. Film growth in high-pressure flowloop tests corroborated previous reports of delayed gas hydrate nucleation observed in rocking cells. Without the aid of the memory effect, treated oil-dominated experiments never experienced hydrate formation, spending upwards of a week in the hydrate stability zone (at the subcooled/fluid test conditions). Subsequent tests which utilized the memory effect then revealed that the hydrate formation rate reduced in the presence of the surface treatment compared to a bare stainless-steel surface. This testing was part of a larger set of trials conducted in the flowloop, which lasted about one year. The surface treatment durability under flowing conditions was evaluated during this time. Even after experiencing ∼4000 operating hours and 2 full pressure cycles, no evidence of delamination or damage was detected. Finally, as part of an extension to previous work, corroded surface asphaltene deposition experiments were performed in a bench-top flowloop. Treated experiments displayed an order of magnitude reduction in both total oil (all fractions of crude oil) and asphaltene fraction deposited.

Gas hydrates constitute a serious flow assurance problem. Over the last decades, industry has faced this problem by using avoidance methods (e.g. injection of thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors) and management strategies (e.g. addition of hydrate anti-agglomerants). In the former, hydrates are completely avoided by shifting the hydrate boundary towards higher pressure and lower temperatures; in the latter, hydrates are allowed to form but their tendency to agglomerate is reduced. It should be noted that some crude oils are naturally able to avoid hydrate agglomeration, this non-plugging tendency may originate from the surfactant-like behavior of fractions like asphaltenes and acids. Recent works have shown that the natural non-plugging potential of certain oils can be affected by the addition of polar molecules like alcohols. There is another strategy for managing hydrate that consist of the addition of THIs at a concentration lower that the one required to full hydrate inhibition. In this case, hydrates are under-inhibited. Studies carried out on hydrate agglomerating systems have shown that under-inhibition might prevent hydrate agglomeration only in a specific range of THI concentrations and sub-cooling; however, work on non-plugging oils is scarce. In this paper, the hydrate agglomeration of two crude oils under-inhibited with methanol and MEG was evaluated through a visual rocking cell apparatus and a high-pressure rheometer. Results showed that THIs and the crude oil's natural surfactants were capable of acting synergistically in reducing hydrate agglomeration and improving the system flowability.

Helicobacter pylori-induced gastritis is the strongest risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma, a malignancy preceded by a series of well-defined histological stages, including metaplasia. One microbial constituent that augments cancer risk is the cag type 4 secretion system (T4SS), which translocates the oncoprotein CagA into host cells. Aberrant stem cell activation is linked to carcinogenesis, and Lrig1 (leucine-rich repeats and Ig-like domains 1) marks a distinct population of progenitor cells. We investigated whether microbial effectors with carcinogenic potential influence Lrig1 progenitor cells ex vivo and via lineage expansion within H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Lineage tracing was induced in Lrig1-CreERT2/+;R26R-YFP/+ (Lrig1/YFP) mice that were uninfected or subsequently infected with cag(+) H. pylori or an isogenic cagE(−) mutant (nonfunctional T4SS). In contrast to infection with wild-type (WT) H. pylori for 2 wk, infection for 8 wk resulted in significantly increased inflammation and proliferation in the corpus and antrum compared with uninfected or mice infected with the cagE(−) mutant. WT H. pylori-infected mice harbored significantly higher numbers of Lrig1/YFP epithelial cells that coexpressed UEA1 (surface cell marker). The number of cells coexpressing intrinsic factor (chief cell marker), YFP (lineage marker), and GSII lectin (spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia marker) were increased only by WT H. pylori. In human samples, Lrig1 expression was significantly increased in lesions with premalignant potential compared with normal mucosa or nonatrophic gastritis. In conclusion, chronic H. pylori infection stimulates Lrig1-expressing progenitor cells in a cag-dependent manner, and these reprogrammed cells give rise to a full spectrum of differentiated cells.

The automobile (or car) is a symbol of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that move its drivers from one place to another, but it can also bring about behavioral changes in them. Changes in sexual behavior resulting from having a car have not been quantified. Given that emerging adults belong to a vulnerable and psychologically immature group, examining said changes in that population is of interest. A case-control study was designed that included 809 emerging adults (17–24 years) studying at a small university in Western Mexico. The students were surveyed in relation to their sexual conduct, along with other socioeconomic aspects. The participants were then separated into cases (having a car, n = 161) and controls (not having a car, n = 648). Having a car increased sexual desire and the probability of having sexual intercourse at a younger age, of having more sexual partners, of being promiscuous, and of increasing the frequency of sexual activities. It also increased self-esteem. Originally conceived as a means of transportation, the automobile can also act as a sexual enhancer in emerging adulthood, which should be taken into consideration in the development of sex education strategies. Future studies are required in other social groups.

Adult sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon longurio) with a mean total length of 110.93 ± 5.30 cm were obtained from a local fishery in Mazatlan (Southeast Gulf of California, Mexico). The total mercury content in muscle was analyzed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The minimum and maximum total mercury content were 0.77 ± 0.23 and 2.33 ± 0.57 µg/g (dry weight), respectively. Only 6.6 % of the organisms did show mercury content higher than the permissible limit. No significant relationship was observed between weight and total mercury content in edible muscle of the sharks (r = 0.364, p > 0.05). The Hazard Quotient values for total mercury (0.005–0.015) and methyl mercury (0.022–0.065) indicated no risk by edible muscle consumption of the shark Rhizoprionodon longurio.

Helicobacter pylori is the strongest risk factor for gastric cancer. Initial interactions between H. pylori and its host originate at the microbial-gastric epithelial cell interface, and contact between H. pylori and gastric epithelium activates signaling pathways that drive oncogenesis. One microbial constituent that increases gastric cancer risk is the cag pathogenicity island, which encodes a type IV secretion system that translocates the effector protein, CagA, into host cells. We previously demonstrated that infection of Mongolian gerbils with a carcinogenic cag+ H. pylori strain, 7.13, recapitulates many features of H. pylori-induced gastric cancer in humans. Therefore, we sought to define gastric proteomic changes induced by H. pylori that are critical for initiation of the gastric carcinogenic cascade. Gastric cell scrapings were harvested from H. pylori-infected and uninfected gerbils for quantitative proteomic analyses using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ). Quantitative proteomic analysis of samples from two biological replicate experiments quantified a total of 2764 proteins, 166 of which were significantly altered in abundance by H. pylori infection. Pathway mapping identified significantly altered inflammatory and cancer-signaling pathways that included Rab/Ras signaling proteins. Consistent with the iTRAQ results, RABEP2 and G3BP2 were significantly up-regulated in vitro, ex vivo in primary human gastric monolayers, and in vivo in gerbil gastric epithelium following infection with H. pylori strain 7.13 in a cag-dependent manner. Within human stomachs, RABEP2 and G3BP2 expression in gastric epithelium increased in parallel with the severity of premalignant and malignant lesions and was significantly elevated in intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia, as well as gastric adenocarcinoma, compared with gastritis alone. These results indicate that carcinogenic strains of H. pylori induce dramatic and specific changes within the gastric proteome in vivo and that a subset of altered proteins within pathways with oncogenic potential may facilitate the progression of gastric carcinogenesis in humans.

The objective of this review is to synthetize knowledge of the relationship between metals and oxidative stress in aquatic crustaceans (mainly shrimp and crabs) to analyze antioxidant responses when organisms are exposed to metals because the direct metal binding to the active site of enzymes inactivates most of the antioxidant systems. This study reviewed over 150 works, which evidenced that: (i) antioxidant defense strategies used by aquatic decapod crustaceans vary among species; (ii) antioxidant enzymes could be induced or inhibited by metals depending on species, concentration, and exposure time; and (iii) some antioxidant enzymes, as superoxide dismutase increase their activity in low metal levels and time exposures, but their activities are inhibited with higher metal concentrations and exposure time.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is currently the main public health problem worldwide. The administration of neutral electrolyzed saline, a solution that contains reactive species of chlorine and oxygen (ROS), may be an effective therapeutic alternative due to its immunomodulating characteristics, in systemic inflammation control, as well as in immune response improvement, promoting control of the viral infection. The present study evaluated the efficacy of treatment with intravenous and/or nebulized neutral electrolyzed saline combined with usual medical care versus usual medical care alone, in ambulatory patients with COVID-19. Methods: A prospective, 2-arm, parallel group, randomized, open-label, phase I-II clinical trial included 39 patients in the control group (usual medical care alone) and 45 patients in the experimental group (usual medical care + intravenous and/or nebulized electrolyzed saline, with dose escalation). Two aspects were evaluated during the twenty-day follow-up: i) the number of patients with disease progression (hospitalization or death); and ii) the Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS), a single-question outcome that determines patient well-being thresholds for pain and function. Biochemical and hematologic parameters, as well as adverse effects, were evaluated in the experimental group. Results: The experimental treatment decreased the risk for hospitalization by 92% (adjusted RR=0.08, 95% CI: 0.01–0.50, P=0.007), with a 43-fold increase in the probability of achieving an acceptable symptom state on day 5 (adjusted RR= 42.96, 95% CI: 9.22–200.0, P

Background & Aims Metaplasia in the stomach is highly associated with development of intestinal-type gastric cancer. Two types of metaplasias, spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia (SPEM) and intestinal metaplasia (IM), are considered precancerous lesions. However, it remains unclear how SPEM and IM are related. Here we investigated a new lineage-specific marker for SPEM cells, aquaporin 5 (AQP5), to assist in the identification of these 2 metaplasias. Methods Drug- or Helicobacter felis (H felis) infection-induced mouse models were used to identify the expression pattern of AQP5 in acute or chronic SPEM. Gene-manipulated mice treated with or without drug were used to investigate how AQP5 expression is regulated in metaplastic lesions. Metaplastic samples from transgenic mice and human gastric cancer patients were evaluated for AQP5 expression. Immunostaining with lineage-specific markers was used to differentiate metaplastic gland characteristics. Results Our results revealed that AQP5 is a novel lineage-specific marker for SPEM cells that are localized at the base of metaplastic glands initially and expand to dominate glands after chronic H felis infection. In addition, AQP5 expression was up-regulated early in chief cell reprogramming and was promoted by interleukin 13. In humans, metaplastic corpus showed highly branched structures with AQP5-positive SPEM. Human SPEM cells strongly expressing AQP5 were present at the bases of incomplete IM glands marked by TROP2 but were absent from complete IM glands. Conclusions AQP5-expressing SPEM cells are present in pyloric metaplasia and TROP2-positive incomplete IM and may be an important component of metaplasia that can predict a higher risk for gastric cancer development., Graphical abstract

Vulpian-Bernhardt syndrome (VBS) is an atypical rare clinical phenotype of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that causes a significant delay in diagnosis, and thus it is important to recognise its clinical and electrophysiological features.Retrospective cross-sectional study. We reviewed the clinical records of patients diagnosed with ALS in the period from January to December 2019. Those meeting criteria for VBS were included so as to describe their frequency as well as their clinical and electrophysiological features.Twenty patients (15.8%) met criteria for VBS; 55% were female; age at onset of symptoms was 46.6 ± 12.9 years; 40% were smokers; median delay in diagnosis was 24 (12-96) months; median time to involvement of the second body segment was 24 (12-132) months, which was lumbosacral in 65%; mean Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale score was 27 ± 7 points; 45% met the El Escorial criteria for ALS defined at diagnosis and 58.8% met the Awaji criteria. There were 19 nerve conduction studies and 17 electromyograms, and an abductor digiti minimi-abductor pollicis brevis (ADM/APB) ratio0.6 was found in 63% (split hand).There is a significant delay in the diagnosis of motor neuron diseases in general and more particularly in VBS. Calculating the ADM/APB ratio and applying the Awaji criteria in the electrophysiology study can be a valuable aid to increase diagnostic certainty in this clinical entity.Síndrome de Vulpian-Bernhardt. El síndrome de Vulpian-Bernhardt (SVB) es un fenotipo clínico atípico e infrecuente de la esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA) que condiciona un importante retraso diagnóstico, por lo que reconocer sus características clínicas y electrofisiológicas tiene relevancia. Materiales y métodos. Estudio retrospectivo y transversal. Se revisaron los expedientes clínicos de pacientes con diagnóstico de ELA en el período de enero de 2017 a diciembre de 2019. Se incluyeron los que cumplían criterios para SVB para describir su frecuencia, características clínicas y electrofisiológicas. Resultados. Veinte pacientes (15,8%) cumplieron los criterios para el SVB; el 55% eran mujeres; la edad de inicio de los síntomas era de 46,6 ± 12,9 años; presentaba tabaquismo el 40%; la mediana de retraso del diagnóstico fue de 24 (12-96) meses; la mediana en afectarse un segundo segmento corporal fue de 24 (12-132) meses, que fue el lumbosacro en el 65%; el promedio en la escala Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale fue de 27 ± 7 puntos; el 45% cumplía los criterios de El Escorial para ELA definida en el momento del diagnóstico y el 58,8%, los de Awaji. Se contó con 19 estudios de neuroconducción y 17 electromiogramas, y se encontró una razón abductor digiti minimi-abductor pollicis brevis (APB/ADM) menos de 0,6 en el 63% (mano dividida). Conclusiones. Existe un retraso importante en el diagnóstico de enfermedades de la motoneurona en general y de SVB en particular. Calcular la razón APB/ADM y aplicar los criterios de Awaji en el estudio de electrofisiología puede ser de gran ayuda para aumentar la certeza diagnóstica en esta entidad clínica.

Gastric carcinogenesis is mediated by complex interactions among Helicobacter pylori, host, and environmental factors. Here, we demonstrate that H. pylori augmented gastric injury in INS-GAS mice under iron-deficient conditions. Mechanistically, these phenotypes were not driven by alterations in the gastric microbiota; however, discovery-based and targeted metabolomics revealed that bile acids were significantly altered in H. pylori-infected mice with iron deficiency, with significant upregulation of deoxycholic acid (DCA), a carcinogenic bile acid. The severity of gastric injury was further augmented when H. pylori-infected mice were treated with DCA, and, in vitro, DCA increased translocation of the H. pylori oncoprotein CagA into host cells. Conversely, bile acid sequestration attenuated H. pylori-induced injury under conditions of iron deficiency. To translate these findings to human populations, we evaluated the association between bile acid sequestrant use and gastric cancer risk in a large human cohort. Among 416,885 individuals, a significant dose-dependent reduction in risk was associated with cumulative bile acid sequestrant use. Further, expression of the bile acid receptor transmembrane G protein-coupled bile acid receptor 5 (TGR5) paralleled the severity of carcinogenic lesions in humans. These data demonstrate that increased H. pylori-induced injury within the context of iron deficiency is tightly linked to altered bile acid metabolism, which may promote gastric carcinogenesis.
