Abstract

We investigate the spreading of passive tracers in closed basins. If the characteristic length scale of the Eulerian velocities is not very small compared with the size of the basin the usual diffusion coefficient does not give any relevant information about the mechanism of spreading. We introduce a finite size characteristic time $\tau(\delta)$ which describes the diffusive process at scale $\delta$. When $\delta$ is small compared with the typical length of the velocity field one has $\tau(\delta) \sim \lambda^{-1}$, where $\lambda$ is the maximum Lyapunov exponent of the Lagrangian motion. At large $\delta$ the behavior of $\tau(\delta)$ depends on the details of the system, in particular the presence of boundaries, and in this limit we have found a universal behavior for a large class of system under rather general hypothesis. The method of working at fixed scale $\delta$ makes more physical sense than the traditional way of looking at the relative diffusion at fixed delay times. Abstract

Hierarchical black hole (BH) mergers in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are unique among formation channels of binary black holes (BBHs) because they are likely associated with electromagnetic counterparts and can efficiently lead to the mass growth of BHs. Here, we explore the impact of gas accretion and migration traps on the evolution of BBHs in AGNs. We have developed a new fast semi-analytic model, that allows us to explore the parameter space while capturing the main physical processes involved. We find that an effective exchange of energy and angular momentum between the BBH and the surrounding gas (i.e., gas hardening) during inspiral greatly enhances the efficiency of hierarchical mergers, leading to the formation of intermediate-mass BHs (up to 104 M⊙) and triggering spin alignment. Moreover, our models with efficient gas hardening show both an anticorrelation between the BBH mass ratio and the effective spin and a correlation between the primary BH mass and the effective spin. In contrast, if gas hardening is inefficient, the hierarchical merger chain is already truncated after the first two or three generations. Abstract

Trifluridine/tipiracil (TAS-102) is an oral chemotherapy approved for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. The efficacy and tolerability of TAS-102 were shown in phase II-III clinical trials and in several real-life studies. The elderly and other special subgroups are underrepresented in published literature. We conducted a retrospective multicenter study to assess the effectiveness and safety of TAS-102 in consecutive patients with pretreated mCRC. In particular, we estimated the effectiveness and safety of TAS-102 in elderly patients (aged ≥70, ≥75 and ≥80 years) and in special subgroups, e.g., patients with concomitant heart disease. One hundred and sixty patients were enrolled. 241. Tracing Integration Errors to Upstream Development Activities : An exploratory study

Abstract

The Eiffel Protocol provides traceability downstream and upstream of all activities that transpire inside the CI/CD pipeline. The traceability achieved by the Eiffel Protocol comes with great benefits even though it does not cover all development activities as it pertains only to the CI/CD pipeline. Our research aims to explore the idea of extending the Eiffel Protocol to cover all activities and discuss what benefits could be seen, especially in the scope of reducing the number of integration failures. A literature study was first carried out to find the root causes of these failures. After the literature study, we conducted a focus group session to gather data about the potential benefits and problems of an extension, what analyses could be drawn, and how it can affect integration errors. Our results show that an extension is beneficial as analyses that can be made with the generated data can tackle some of the biggest issues found in software development teams, especially in larger organizations. The complexity, cost involved and the time needed to see a return on investment does however weigh it down. Thus, while it is beneficial it is not enough for organizations to consider it as a priority to integrate with their environments when thinking of the costs involved to do so. Further implementation solutions need to be researched before it shows its worth.

Abstract

Linear Temporal Logic over finite traces (LTL_?) has proved itself to be an important and effective formalism in formal verification as well as in artificial intelligence. Pure past LTL_? (pLTL) is the logic obtained from LTL_? by replacing each (future) temporal operator by a corresponding past one, and is naturally interpreted at the end of a finite trace. It is known that each property definable in LTL_? is also definable in pLTL, and ?ceversa. However, despite being extensively used in practice, to the best of our knowledge, there is no systematic study of their succinctness. In this paper, we investigate the succinctness of LTL_? and pLTL. First, we prove that pLTL can be exponentially more succinct than LTL_? by showing that there exists a property definable with a pLTL formula of size n such that the size of all LTL_? formulas defining it is at least exponential in n. Then, we prove that LTL_? can be exponentially more succinct than pLTL as well. This result shows that, although being expressively equivalent, LTL_? and pLTL are incomparable when succinctness is concerned. In addition, we study the succinctness of Safety-LTL (the syntactic safety fragment of LTL over infinite traces) with respect to its canonical form G(pLTL), whose formulas are of the form G(?), G being the globally operator and ? a pLTL formula. We prove that G(pLTL) can be exponentially more succinct than Safety-LTL, and that the same holds for the dual cosafety fragment.

Abstract

Satellite galaxies undergo a variety of physical processes when they are accreted by groups and clusters, often resulting in the loss of baryonic and dark matter (DM) mass. In this work, we evaluate the predictions from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation regarding the evolution of the matter content of satellites, focusing on a population that are accreted at z > 1 and retain their identity as satellites down to z  = 0. At fixed host halo mass, the amount of DM and stellar mass stripped depends mostly on the pericentric distance, d peri, here normalized by host halo virial radius. The closest encounters result in significant loss of DM, with subhaloes retaining between 20 and a few per cent of their z  = 1 mass. At fixed d peri, DM mass stripping seems more severe in lower mass haloes. Conversely, the average satellite in higher mass haloes has its stellar mass growth halted earlier, having lost a higher fraction of stellar mass by z  = 0. We also show that mass stripping has a strong impact on the quenched fractions. The IllustrisTNG boxes are qualitatively consistent in these predictions, with quantitative differences mostly originating from the distinct subhalo mass ranges covered by the boxes. Finally, we have identified DM-deficient systems in all TNG boxes. These objects are preferentially found in massive clusters (M host ≳ 1013 M⊙), had very close encounters with their central galaxies (⁠|$d_{\rm peri}\simeq 0.05\, R_{\rm vir}$|⁠), and were accreted at high redshift (z infall ≳ 1.4), reinforcing the notion that tidal stripping is responsible for their remarkable lack of DM.
