Abstract

Precise data on the neutron magnetic form factor G_{mn} have been obtained with measurements of the ratio of cross sections of D(e,e'n) and D(e,e'p) up to momentum transfers of Q^2 = 0.9 (GeV/c)^2. Data with typical uncertainties of 1.5% are presented. The recent experimental program with the out-of-plane spectrometer system (OOPS) at MIT-Bates encompassed an extensive set of $\mathrm{d}(\vec\mathrm{e},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{p})$ measurements, investigations of the $\mathrm{N}\to\Delta$ transition using $\mathrm{p}(\vec\mathrm{e},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{p})\pi^0$ and $\mathrm{p}(\vec\mathrm{e},\mathrm{e}'\pi^+)\mathrm{n}$ reaction channels, and studies of virtual Compton scattering (VCS) $\mathrm{p}(\mathrm{e},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{p})\gamma$ below the pion threshold. Abstract

The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p (\vec e,e'\vec p) pi^0 reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q^2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)^2 and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized c.w. electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. Due to the spin precession in a magnetic spectrometer, all three proton polarization components P_x/P_e = (-11.4 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.4) %, P_y = (-43.1 \pm 1.3 \pm 2.2) %, and P_z/P_e = (56.2 \pm 1.5 \pm 2.6) % could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio CMR = (-6.4\pm 0.7_{stat}\pm 0.8_{syst}) % was determined from P_x in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal to transverse response is discussed., Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 1 table, 2 eps figures

Abstract

Precision studies of the reaction $^{3}$He(e,e$^\prime$p) using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI are presented. All data are for quasielastic kinematics at $|\vec{q} | =685$ MeV/c. Absolute cross sections were measured at three electron kinematics. For the measured missing momenta range from 10 to 165 MeV/c, no strength is observed for missing energies higher than 20 MeV. Distorted momentum distributions were extracted for the two-body breakup and the continuum. The longitudinal and transverse behavior was studied by measuring the cross section for three photon polarizations. The longitudinal and transverse nature of the cross sections is well described by a currently accepted and widely used prescription of the off-shell electron-nucleon cross-section. 207. The role of the pion cloud in electroproduction of the $\Delta$(1232)

Abstract

We calculate the ratios $E2/M1$ and $C2/M1$ of the multipole amplitudes for electroproduction of the $\Delta$(1232) in the range of photon virtuality $0<-K^2<1$~GeV$^2$ in a chiral chromodielectric model and a linear $\sigma$-model. We find that relatively large experimental values can be explained in terms of the pion contribution alone; the contribution arising from d-state quark admixture remains below 10\%. We describe the pion cloud as a coherent state and use spin and isospin projection to obtain the physical nucleon and the $\Delta$. The $A_{1/2}$ and $A_{3/2}$ amplitudes are reasonably well reproduced in the $\sigma$-model; in the chromodielectric model, however, they are a factor of two too small., Comment: 10 pages LaTeX2e, 3 LaTeX figures within the text; Requires elsart.cls (included in the self-unpacking uuencoded gzipped file). Abstract

The mechanism for the formation of the $\Lambda(1405)$ resonance is studied in a chiral quark model that includes quark-meson as well as contact (four point) interactions. The negative-parity $S$-wave scattering amplitudes for strangeness $-1$ and $1$ are calculated within a unified coupled-channel framework that includes the $KN$, $\bar{K}N$, $\pi\Sigma$, $\eta\Lambda$, $K\Xi$, $\pi\Lambda$, and $\eta\Sigma$ channels and possible genuine three-quark bare singlet and octet states corresponding to $\frac12^-$ resonances. We show that in order to reproduce the scattering amplitudes in the $S_{01}$ partial wave it is important to include the pertinent three-quark octet states as well as the singlet state, while the inclusion of the contact term is not mandatory. The Laurent-Pietarinen expansion is used to determine the $S$-matrix poles. Following their evolution as a function of increasing interaction strength, the mass of the singlet state is strongly reduced due to the attractive self-energy in the $\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N$ channels; when it drops below the $KN$ threshold, the state acquires a dominant $\bar{K}N$ component which can be identified with a molecular state. The attraction between the kaon and the nucleon is generated through the $\bar{K}N\Lambda^*$ interaction rather than by meson-nucleon forces., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

The ratio of the nucleon F2 structure functions, F2n/F2p, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from H3 and He3 nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range 0.19

Abstract

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle ϕpq, with a polar angle θpq coverage up to about 8°. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual $^{11}$B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for p-shell knockout from $^{12}$C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to ≈0.16), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to ≈0.01) for s-shell knockout from both $^{12}$C and $^{2}$H. The data for $^{2}$H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for $^{12}$C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Abstract

The small binding energy of the hypertriton leads to predictions of the non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as nnΛ. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound nnΛ state. The nnΛ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the (e, e′K⁺) reaction at Jefferson Lab’s experimental HallA. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the nnΛ-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the ³H(γ*, K⁺)X reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|delta p/p| lt 4%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the nnΛ state were obtained to be 21 and $31 , rm {nb} , rm {sr}^{-1}$ at the $90%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of (−BΛ, Γ) = (0.25, 0.8) MeV and (0.55, 4.7) MeV, respectively, were assumed. Abstract

We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of 3Heproceeding to pdand ppnfinal states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at Q2=0.25 (GeV/c)2for missing momenta up to 250 MeV/c. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of 3Heand the relative importance of two-and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of 3Heunless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup process is much smaller than previously thought.

Abstract

We present the first measurements of the double ratio of the polarization-transfer components (Px′/Pz′)p/(Px′/Pz′)s for knock-out protons from the s and p shells in C12 measured by the C12(e→,e′p→) reaction in quasi-elastic kinematics. The data are compared to theoretical predictions in the relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation. Our results show that the differences between s- and p-shell protons, observed when compared at the same initial momentum (missing momentum), largely disappear when the comparison is done at the same proton virtuality. We observe no difference in medium modifications between protons from the s and p shells with the same virtuality in spite of the large differences in the respective nuclear densities.

Abstract

We report measurements of the induced polarization P→ of protons knocked out from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C via the A(e,e′p→) reaction. We have studied the dependence of P→ on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum pmiss and the “off-coplanarity” angle ϕpq between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360° range in ϕpq, both the normal (Py) and, for the first time, the transverse (Px) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. Px vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as Py.We find that the dependence on ϕpq is sine-like for Px and cosine-like for Py. For carbon, the magnitude of the induced polarization is especially large when protons are knocked out from the p3/2 shell at very small pmiss. For the deuteron, the induced polarization is near zero at small |pmiss|, and its magnitude increases with |pmiss|. For both nuclei such behavior is reproduced qualitatively by theoretical results, driven largely by the spin-orbit part of the final-state interactions. However, for both nuclei, sizeable discrepancies exist between experiment and theory.

Abstract

The mechanism for the formation of the Λ (1405) resonance is studied in a chiral quark model that includes quark-meson as well as contact (four point) interactions. The negative-parity S-wave scattering amplitudes for strangeness - 1 and 1 are calculated within a unified coupled-channel framework that includes the KN, K ¯ N , π Σ , η Λ , K Ξ , π Λ , and η Σ channels and possible genuine three-quark bare singlet and octet states corresponding to 1 2 - resonances. It is found that in order to reproduce the scattering amplitudes in the S 01 partial wave it is important to include the pertinent three-quark octet states as well as the singlet state, while the inclusion of the contact term is not mandatory. The Laurent-Pietarinen expansion is used to determine the S-matrix poles. Following their evolution as a function of increasing interaction strength, the mass of the singlet state is strongly reduced due to the attractive self-energy in the π Σ and K ¯ N channels; when it drops below the KN threshold, the state acquires a dominant K ¯ N component which can be identified with a molecular state. The attraction between the kaon and the nucleon is generated through the K ¯ N Λ ∗ interaction rather than by meson-nucleon forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
