A series of novel benzimidazolium salts (1–4) and their pyridine enhanced precatalyst preparation stabilization and initiation (PEPPSI) themed palladium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes [PdCl2(NHC)(Py)] (5–8), where NHC = 1-(N-methylphthalimide)-3-alkylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene and Py = 3-chloropyridine, were synthesized and characterized by means of 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, UV–vis (for 5–8), ESI-FTICR-MS (for 2, 4, 6–8) and FTIR spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds were tested in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling (for 1–8) and arylation (for 5–8) reactions. As catalysts, they demonstrated a highly efficient route for the formation of asymmetric biaryl compounds even though they were used in very low loading. For example, all compounds displayed good catalytic activity for the C–C bond formation of 4-tert-butylphenylboronic acid with 4-chlorotoluene.

Various regimens have been explored in the treatment of acute nonlymphoblastic leukaemia (AML), but so far none has been shown to be superior. Here we report on a comparison of three widely used protocols defined by Berman (Group 1), MRC AML 10 (Group 2), and Arlin (Group 3). Group 1 includes cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) (100 mg/m2/d, days 1–7) and idarubicin (Ida) (12 mg/m2/d, days 1–3) for induction, and Ara-C (200 mg/m2/d, days 1–6) and Ida (15 mg/m2/d, day 1) twice for consolidation. Group 2 includes Ara-C (200 mg/m2/d, days 1–10), daunorubicin (Dnc) (50 mg/m2/d, days 1, 3, 5) and etoposide (VP16) (100 mg/m2/d, days 1–5) for induction. The first consolidation therapy consisted of the same schedule except for Ara-C given on days 1–8. The second consolidation regimen consisted of Ara-C (200 mg/m2/d, days 1–8), VP16 (100 mg/m2/d, days 1–5) and amsacrine (100 mg/m2/d, days 1–5). Mitoxantrone (Mitox) (10 mg/m2/d, days 1–5) and Ara-C (200 mg/m2/d, days 1–3) were given as the third consolidation therapy. Group 3 was identical to Group 1 except for Ida being replaced with Mitox. During the study period 99 patients were enrolled and 34 were allocated randomly to Group 1, 36 to Group 2, and 29 to Group 3. Except for age distribution all patients’ characteristics were similar between the groups. As there were more elderly patients in Group 1, time to complete remission (CR) was longer in this group as they needed more second induction. Induction deaths were 9.7%, 12.9% and 14.8% in Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Patients in Group 2 received a higher amount of Ara-C compared with the other groups ( P<0.001). After a median follow-up period of 45 months (1–67 for survivors) an advantage in Group 1 was observed. Relapse-free survival (RFS) was better in Group 1 ( P=0.014) at 3 years. Fourteen of the patients were transplanted (11 allografts, 3 autografts). When patients with transplants were excluded, overall survival was longer in Group 1 both at 3 years and 5 years ( P=0.05). In conclusion, despite patient advanced age and lower dose of Ara-C, the idarubicin-containing treatment was superior to the other regimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of stem cells derived from adipose tissue as an autologous and self-replenishing source for a variety of differentiated cell phenotypes, provides a great deal of promise for reconstructive surgery. The secret of the human body, stem cells are reserved. Yani her türlü doku kayıplarında yeniden fonksiyon gösterebilmesinin sırrı sahip olduğu kök hücrelerde saklıdır. Vücudumuzda farklılaşmamış bir hücre olarak bulunan kök hücreler herhangi bir organa yerleştirildiklerinde farklılaşıp o dokunun özelliklerini kazanarak şimdiye kadar bilinen oldukça fazla dokunun yerine geçebilmekte ve bu sayede hastalıkları iyileştirip, dokuları yenileyebilmektedir. Kök hücre kaynağı olarak kullanılan, kordon kanı, kemik iliği ve yirmi yaş dişinden sonra bilim adamları insan yağ dokusunda da kök hücre araştırdılar ve yağ dokusunda diğer kaynaklardan çok daha fazla kök hücre bulunduğunu keşfettiler. Bu hücreler üzerinde yapılan in vitro çalışmalar şunu gösteriyor ki bu hücrelerden birçok değişkene bağlı istenen soya yönelik doğrudan kök hücre optimizasyonu yapılabilmektedir. Bu derlemede de, adipoz kaynaklı kök hücrelerin saflaştırılması ve uygulamalarda kullanılması ile ilgili mevcut literatür gözden geçirilerek bilim dünyasına katı sağlaması amaçlanmıştır.

The idea of morphing is drawing extensive attention in aerospace technologies. Several different approaches like span, camber, twist, and sweep are finding applications. In this work, the concept of a trailing edge control surface which is capable of performing decamber morphing is explained. The upper and lower parts of the control surface undergo different chordwise elongations and the difference between these displacements gives rise to either camber or decamber morphing. The necessary force is achieved by the help of servo actuators. During the design, the structural analyses were done to determine the best viable options for the number of servo actuators, the location of the servo actuators, and the material properties used in the control surface. The control surface was designed of aluminum, composite and compliant materials hence was called a hybrid one. The structural analyses were conducted by using ANSYS® Workbench v14.0 package program. After finding the best viable design, which was made for in vacuo condition, the proposed design was also verified under the simulated aerodynamic loading. The aerodynamic loads were obtained from CFD analyses which were done with SU2 V3.2.3 open-source flow solver.

The relationship between interest rates and inflation which is called Fisher effect has been investigated in both theoretical and empirical economics in vast literature. The contribution of this paper to the literature is to test the Fisher effect for the selected four transition economies that are also new EU member states. The empirical analysis is conducted by allowing for a structural break that takes place in year 2004. In this study, a case-wise bootstrap approach empirical method which developed by Hatemi-J and Hacker (2005) is used and the results support a tax adjusted Fisher effect in the presence of a structural break.

We are reporting an irreversible Horner Syndrome (HS) in a patient with benign thyroid gland nodule in which thyroidectomy was performed for treatment. A 37-year-old female was admitted to our clinic with a swelling in the left lobe of the thyroid gland and ptosis at the left eyelid. The clinical diagnosis of HS was confirmed pharmacologically by aproclonidine. Histopathologic examination of thyroidectomy specimen was reported as benign nodule. To the best of our knowledge, this is a very rare report in terms of thyroid benign nodule associated with irreversible HS due to cervical sympathetic chain compression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sunitinib and axitinib are oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) that is commonly used in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) as it has been shown to improve the progression-free survival of patients compared with sorafenib. Hypertension, palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, diarrhea, decreased appetite, nausea, and fatigue are common adverse events associated with them. We declared the first case report of a RCC patient with acute pancreatitis both under sunitinib and axitinib treatment. A 63-year-old male RCC patient who had been previously treated with interferon alfa 2b, sunitinib, everolimus and axitinib was hospitalized for acute pancreatitis four months after the onset of sunitinib therapy and five months after the onset of axitinib treatment. Symptoms and levels of serum lipase were normalized within one week after drug was withheld. Acute pancreatitis is a rare side effect of TKI and because of this, in patients under TKI treatment abdominal pain should be considered as a possible symptom of acute pancreatitis.

This study makes an attempt to examine the long run relationship between the official and black market exchange rates using monthly data for a sample of 13 Middle East and Northern African (MENA) countries from 1970 to 1998. Using the Pool Mean Group framework, the article provides evidence on proportional long run relationship between black and official market exchange rates in sample countries. The positive common long run official exchange rates (OEX) elasticity is statistically significant and slightly greater than one. The hypothesis of portfolio balance model is confirmed, implying that there exists a proportional long run equilibrium relationship between official exchange rates and black market exchange rates. However, the short run dynamics remain heterogeneous across countries.

The rapid agricultural development and mechanization of agronomic diligence has led to a significant growth in energy consumption and CO2 emission. Agriculture has a dominant contribution to boosting the economy of any country. In this paper, we demonstrate carbon dioxide emissions’ association with cropped area, energy use, fertilizer offtake, gross domestic product per capita, improved seed distribution, total food grains and water availability in Pakistan for the period of 1987-2017. We employed Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Phillips-Perron unit root tests to examine the variables’ stationarity. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing technique to cointegration was applied to demonstrate the causality linkage among study variables from the evidence of long-run and short-run analyses. The long-run evidence reveals that cropped area, energy usage, fertilizer offtake, gross domestic product per capita and water availability have a positive and significant association with carbon dioxide emissions, while the analysis results of improved seed distribution and total food grains have a negative association with carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan. Overall, the long-run effects are stronger than the short-run dynamics, in terms of the impact of explanatory variables on carbon dioxide emission, thus making the findings heterogeneous. Possible initiatives should be taken by the government of Pakistan to improve the agriculture sector and also introduce new policies to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide.

Background: Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a disease associated with episodes of supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular pre-excitation or atrial fibrillation. WPW is characterized by an aberrant electrical conduction pathway between atria and ventricles. Case Report: The major anesthetic problem connected with WPW syndrome is the risk of tachyarrhythmias due to accessory pathway. Therefore, it has been proposed that the aim of anesthetic management should be the avoidance of tachyarrhythmia and sympathetic stimulation. Sugammadex was administered as a neuromuscular reversal agent in this case. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of sugammadex use in a patient with WPW. This report presents a case of general anesthesia management in a patient with WPW syndrome. Conclusion: We think that it is appropriate to use sugammadex to reverse rocuronium for the prevention of sudden hemodynamic changes in patients with WPW who underwent general anesthesia.

Pneumomediastinum is defined as the presence of air in mediastinum. Pneumomediastinum can sometimes occur after surgery. Pneumomediastinum seen after dental procedures is rare. We presented the case of subcutaneous emphysema developed in the neck and upper chest after tooth extraction and discussed the possible mechanisms of pneumomediastinum.

Using panel data for 21 Latin Americancountries over the period 1975–2004, this paper analyzes macroeconomic effects of IMF programmes by using GEE methodology. In line with the results of previous studies, it is shown that these programmes have positive effects on the balance of payments, current account and investment. However, they negatively affect budget deficit, per capita GDP, FDI, inflation and consumption.

In this paper we review the literature on the finance-growth nexus and investigate the causality between financial development and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa for the period 1975-2005. Using panel co-integration and panel GMM estimation for causality, the results of the panel co-integration analysis provide evidence of no long-run relationship between financial development and economic growth. The empirical findings in the paper show a bi-directional causal relationship between the growth of real GDP per capita and the domestic credit provided by the banking sector for the panels of 24 Sub-Saharan African countries. The findings imply that African countries can accelerate their economic growth by improving their financial systems and vice versa.

A 46-year-old white male with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) limited to the thorax developed autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP), following a cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel and G-CSF-containing regimen for peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization. AITP associated with small or non-small cell lung cancer has been reported. We considered that the AITP in this case may be a part of paraneoplastic syndrome, which is frequently seen in patients with SCLC. The patient received HDC and autologous PBSC transplantation (APBSCT) for SCLC and the AITP resolved following transplantation, thus supporting the concept of HDC + APBSCT for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. The integral porosity shallow water model is a type of porous shallow water model for urban flood modeling, that defines two types of porosity, namely a volumetric porosity inside the computational cell and a conveyance porosity at each edge. Porosity terms are determined directly from the underlying building geometry, hence buildings do not need to be discretized exactly. This enables simulations with significantly reduced CPU time on meshes with cell sizes larger than the building size. Here, the macroscopic model view leads to an additional source term at the unresolved building-fluid interface, yielding a building drag dissipation source term. In literature, several formulations for this term can be found. The integral porosity shallow water model is sensitive to the building drag dissipation, and using the drag parameters as a calibration parameter enhances the accuracy of model results. However, the ideal way to achieve this is still an open research question. In this contribution, we present a simple technique to estimate building drag dissipation that uses the conveyance porosity configuration to estimate the projected area inside the cell, which is then used in a drag force equation. The advantage of this approach is that it is computationally inexpensive, no additional parameters need to be stored, and only a single parameter has to be calibrated. The proposed approach is compared with drag dissipation formulations from existing literature in a laboratory experiment that features a dam-break against an isolated obstacle. The aim of the comparison is to evaluate present existing building drag dissipation models with regard to accuracy and computational cost.

The aim of this paper is to examine effectiveness of devaluation on the trade balance in four countries: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. We use the Johansen-Juselius cointegration test and impulse response function to estimate the long-run and shortrun effects of devaluation on the trade balance. The estimated results suggest that depreciation improve the trade balance in the long run for the case of Argentina and Peru, and in the short-run there has been J-curve in Argentina and Peru. In addition, the cointegration is found among the four variables (trade balance, domestic income, foreign incomes and real exchange rate) in the case of Argentina and Peru. The results also indicate that there is no cointegration relationship between these variables for Brazil and Mexico. The conclusion of the paper is that the evidence of the J-curve pattern was found for Argentina and Peru only.

Acquired ichthyosis (Al) has rarely been described following bone marrow transplantation (BMT). We report a 29-year-old male, who underwent allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (alIoPBSCT) for chronic myelogenous leukemia, and who developed AI associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Both of these disorders were treated successfully with cyclosporin A. We conclude that AI may be related to an autoimmune process on the basis of cGVHD, and dermathopathologic evaluation must be performed in patients with skin changes suggesting AI following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. This study investigates the long-run relationshipbetween the real GDP and internationaltourism in Turkey during the time period 1987-2007.For this purpose, tourism-led growth hypothesis(TLG) is tested by using two different methods:a vector error correction model (VEC) and anautoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL).The results of the Johansen cointegration test aswell as of the ARDL bound test show that thereis no unique long-term or equilibrium relationshipbetween the real GDP and international tourism.Therefore, the TLG hypothesis cannot be inferredfor the Turkish economy because no cointegrationexists between international tourism and the realGDP. Moreover, Granger causality test and errorcorrection model cannot be run any further in thelong-term period.

In the title hydrated symetrically substituted 1,3-bis(4-methylbenzyl)benzimidazolium salt, C23H23N2+·Br−·H2O, the dihedral angles between the benzimidazole ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.003 Å) and the pendant benzene rings are 73.18 (16) and 77.52 (16)°. Both benzene rings lie to the same side of the benzimidazole ring system, giving the cation an overall U-shape. In the crystal, the cation is linked to the water molecule by a short C—H...O hydrogen bond and the water molecule forms O—H...Br hydrogen bonds. Together, these interactions lead to [010] chains. The packing is consolidated by C—H...Br hydrogen bonds and aromatic π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.5401 (17) and 3.8815 (18) Å], generating a three-dimensional network.
