This article reports the macro-organizational structure of research articles (RAs) in mathematics, based on an analysis of 30 published pure and applied mathematics articles. Math RAs eschew the Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion (IMRD) structure for an Introduction-Results model that enables researchers to present new knowledge as clearly and succinctly as possible. Notable omissions from the mathematics RA structure are Method and Discussion sections, which mathematicians do not need because of the well-established methodology used in the field (based on deduction and induction) and the relative absence of extended discussion required to interpret research findings. We contextualize the macrostructure of RAs in mathematics within the discourse conventions and disciplinary assumptions about knowledge in the field to suggest the value of such a strategy to teachers and students of academic writing. The aim of this paper is to study quasi-rational polygons related to the outer billiard. We compare different notions introduced in Gutkin and Simanyi (1992 Commun. Math. Phys. 143 431-49) and Schwartz (2009 Outer Billiards on Kites (Annals of Mathematics Studies vol 171) (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press)) and make a synthesis of them. The purpose of this article was to re-test previous findings that forty years of mathematics research is required to cover 90 percent of the mathematics citations. I have used an improved comprehensive methodology, extracting all articles by the University of British Columbia department of mathematics for 2011 and working with the 4,161 citations from these articles. The results confirm previous research that we need forty years of mathematics research to cover 90 percent of the materials cited by mathematics faculty. Also, I have found that in mathematics only 24 percent of citations are coming from research newer than five years. Moreover, I report that the vast majority of the mathematics citations are from journals—81 percent are journal articles, while only 15 percent are books citations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This addendum concerns the author's recent paper [S. Carl, Variational approach to noncoercive systems of elliptic variational inequalities via trapping region, Complex Var. Elliptic Eqns. 57(2-4) (2012), pp. 169–183.]. After the acceptance of paper 1, the author realized that even though the main results of that paper remain true, a few arguments used in their proofs turned out to be more involved, and therefore need to be corrected, which is the main purpose of this note. There are several major international awards in the field of mathematics. Arguably the most prestigious of these is the Fields Medal, which has been awarded to fifty-one mathematicians since 1936. This article will examine aspects of the Fields Medal winners such as age, nationality, affiliated institution upon award, area of work, and the impact of their publications in the mathematics literature. MathSciNet author profiles were examined to collect both publication and citation data for this study. E-convexity as a generalization of convexity has been introduced and studied in some recent publications in the fields of pure and applied mathematical analysis. In this study, some properties of E-convex and generalized E-convex functions are proved. Relationships between different notions are established and some clarifying examples are given. The Coalgebraic Logic seminar took place between the 6th and 9th of December 2009 at the Leibniz Forschungszentrum Schloss Dagstuhl. The event was very well received, with more than 35 scientists from Europe, the United States, Canada and China attending, and with more than thirty presentations during the three days. Given the unforeseen enthusiasm of the meeting's reception, we thought that it would be a good idea for us to put together a special journal issue dedicated to this topic. We were also encouraged by the positive response we received from Guiseppe Longo, who indicated his interest in a special issue for Mathematical Structures in Computer Science, and here we are. The matching preclusion number of a graph is the minimum number of edges the deletion of which results in a graph that has neither perfect matchings nor almost-perfect matchings. For many interconnection networks, the optimal sets are precisely those induced by a single vertex. Recently, the conditional matching preclusion number of a graph was introduced to look for obstruction sets beyond those induced by a single vertex. It is defined to be the minimum number of edges the deletion of which results in a graph with no isolated vertices that has neither perfect matchings nor almost-perfect matchings. In this article, we find this number and classify all optimal sets for the alternating group graphs, one of the most popular interconnection networks, and their companion graphs, the split-stars.
