Abstract

Attraverso l’analisi di testi e documenti veronesi e inglesi, il contributo evidenzia come già nel xviii secolo esistesse e fosse tramandata una “memoria veronese” delle vicende di Romeo e Giulietta e dei loro luoghi, sulla base della cinquecentesca Istoria di Verona di Girolamo Dalla Corte. La prima attestazione della tomba di Giulietta si deve infatti al resoconto di viaggio di John Breval del 1726, ben un secolo prima che i viaggiatori romantici dell’Ottocento, sulla scia di Shakespeare, ne riferiscano nei loro scritti, decretandone la fortuna. Attraverso Breval, le vicende e i luoghi dei due amanti vengono accreditati come “fatti storici” nei testi inglesi dei maggiori editori e critici shakespeariani dell’epoca. A Verona, invece, il silenzio di Scipione Maffei evidenzia come i fatti di Romeo e Giulietta fossero, per ragioni di gusto, banditi nei circoli della più avveduta nobiltà, mentre gli scritti di Giambattista Biancolini suggeriscono come essi continuassero a circolare, come “novella sentimentale”, in un contesto borghese, ma colto e informato della storia cittadina. Nella fortuna di Romeo e Giulietta si specchiano quindi le due diverse anime della società veronese, destinata a una profondo e radicale mutamento nella seconda metà del secolo.

Abstract

La novella di Romeo e Giulietta è nota soprattutto attraverso la versione di William Shakespeare, pubblicata alla fine del XVI secolo. Alla prima metà dello stesso secolo risalgono però sia la versione originaria di Luigi Da Porto, sia i rifacimenti di Matteo Bandello e Gerardo Boldieri (Clizia Veronese). Questi ultimi nacquero all’interno di circoli culturali veronesi, che tra l’altro identificarono nella topografia cittadina i luoghi più significativi della vicenda. La fortuna della novella a livello locale viene messa in relazione con gli avvenimenti interni alla città scaligera e in particolare con le politiche di chiusura sociale portate avanti dal patriziato cittadino. Partendo dal tema dell’onore femminile e delle relazioni matrimoniali, la novella sembra essere stata adottata dal patriziato veronese come strumento ideologico volto a sostenere il controllo delle magistrature cittadine e l’esclusione delle classi mercantili emergenti sotto il dominio veneziano dopo la guerra di Cambrai.

Abstract

Between the 780s and the 840s the episcopal see of Verona was held by bishops coming from beyond the Alps, appointed by the Carolingian rulers and charged with control over a prestigious and strategically key bishopric. They were called upon to boost the communications between the local elites and the political and social machinery of the Carolingian world. In order to achieve that, they first had to negotiate their own integration in their new field of action, and to be acknowledged as effective political mediators between Verona and the rulers. The tools they used to do that were, on the one hand, their own skills and previous experience, on the other, the centre for textual production, preservation and dissemination they found in Verona, that is, the cathedral scriptorium and library. The books that can be attributed to them allow us to keep trace of the networks of relationships and cultural exchanges they developed, linking the two sides of the Alps. This paper focuses more specifically on the activities and endeavours of Bishop Ratold (c. 802-840). The liturgical and hagiographical manuscripts produced in Verona in that period are examined as key markers of Ratold’s intellectual networks, and of the ways in which he used them for his own need for self-integration. They also provide elements casting light on the introduction and reception of the Carolingian cultural reforms in the Kingdom of Italy.

Abstract

This paper aims to give an account of some of the manuscripts related to Lothar. In its first section an attempt is made at retracing a set of books that could have belonged to Lothar’s library, nowadays known only from secondary sources. In the second section some display codices are discussed, either commissioned by Lothar, or dedicated to him, such as Lothar’s Gospel Book MS Par. lat. 266 or those traditionally referred to as the «Lothar-Gruppe», whose actual connection both to Lothar and to each other is questioned here. The third and last part of the paper contains some considerations on the manuscripts produced during the years of Lothar’s government in Italy, that essentially coincide with the second quarter of the ninth century.

Abstract

This article explores evidence for polyphonic music in Italian convents during the first half of the 16th century. It presents a summary of documentary evidence relating to conventual music in the pre-Tridentine era, alongside practical evidence from contemporary treatises regarding methods by which convent choirs could develop a polyphonic repertory from existing music. It revisits claims for mandatory downwards transposition of music written in high clefs, and considers two manuscripts--Verona, Biblioteca Capitolare, Ms.761 and Brussels Bibliothêque du Conservatoire Royal de Musique, Ms.27766-in the light of this investigation. The article aims to open up a conversation regarding the status of convent polyphony in the early 16th century, shedding new light on its importance and advocating a fresh approach to the possibility of female performance for the Franco-Flemish repertory of the great papal and ducal chapels. His testament, dated April 11, 1342, recently resurfaced briefly on the antiquities market. Abstract

La colonia romana di Augusta Taurinorum è all'origine di Torino. Dopo qualche parola per illustrare la fondazione, ed aver fornito riferimenti bibliografici relativi, si discutono le proposte, quella da me fatta nel 2012 e altre seguenti, che indicano o pretendono datazioni archeoastronomiche. Si presterà particolare attenzione agli scritti dello storico tedesco Heinrich Nissen sulla planimetria della città romana. Il suo Das Templum del 1869 ci porterà ad analizzare che cosa è lo spazio inaugurato – detto templum – dove i Romani interrogavano il divino. Nel libro di Nissen troviamo infatti la città immaginata come un templum, con il decumano – la via principale della città romana - orientato verso il sorgere del sole il giorno di fondazione. Vedremo anche come Nissen associ tale Dies Natalis ad una festa. Nissen pare essere il primo ad aver associato decumano, sorgere del sole, feste del calendario romano. Il Das Templum venne criticato in passato, con critiche ben fondate, che dicono che la città non è un templum. Tutto ciò è stato dimenticato. Nel 2007, un articolo di Giulio Magli, che ripropone senza citare Nissen il decumano orientato col sorgere del sole un dì di festa, ha portato ad un revival di ipotesi archeoastronomiche sulla città di Torino. Si discuteranno anche le proposte relative al giorno, nella lunga sequenza legale e religiosa caratterizzante il processo di fondazione di una colonia, che i coloni celebravano come Dies Natalis. Si citerà anche una lezione di Friedrich Nietzsche. Di fatto, il lavoro di Nissen e poi di Nietzsche sono i primi studi di filologia Greca e Latina sull'orientazione solare che coinvolgano puntualmente, in particolare quello di Nissen, gli scritti degli agrimensori romani. Non si parlerà solo di orientamenti solari e di archeoastronomia. Quando necessario si introdurranno delle note per chiarire il contesto. Si discuterà in dettaglio la centuriazione di Torino, fornendo letteratura relativa. Si discuterà una datazione della città alle None di Febbraio. Per la fondazione di Torino e la sua pretesa datazione al 30 gennaio 9 a.C., giorno di dedica dell’Ara Pacis a Roma, si sottolineerà come questa datazione insista su una cosa non vera relativa all’altare. L’Ara Pacis a Roma non è stata decretata per la fine delle guerre alpine, ma per il ritorno di Augusto dalle province di Spagna e Gallia. Per la conclusione delle guerre alpine, il senato decretò il Trofeo delle Alpi. --------- Osservazione:La datazione proposta da Guido Cossard, e che viene menzionata nell'articolo, è congruente con la direzione (azimut) solare alle None di Febbraio, oltre ad essere congruente con i dati storici, in particolare per l'anno 21 a.C. dove un cippo con iscrizione menzionante il console Marco Lollio attesta sicura presenza romana nell'area torinese. Nel 2012 avevo lavorato sulla datazione di Torino seguendo principalmente il lavoro di Giulio Magli del 2007, sull'orientazione delle città romane secondo il sorgere del sole. Purtroppo tale lavoro non menziona il fondamentale testo di Heinrich Nissen, che per primo discute l'orientazione del decumano secondo il sorgere del sole. Tale teoria è stata criticata abbondantemente da J. Valeton e da studiosi più recenti come P. Catalano e F. Castagnoli. Magli pertanto non parla di studi fondamentali sull'orientazione astronomica delle città e delle critiche ben fondate a tale teoria. Tale mancanza si è ripercossa su studi anche recentissimi, dove perdura l'assenzadi riferimenti a citazioni critiche specifiche ma, ripeto, molto ben fondate. Anzi, la citazione di I.M.J. Valeton. (1898) De templis Romanis, Mnemosyne, n. 26, viene travisata e fallacemente menzionata a supporto dell'orientazione solare, mentre Valeton dice tutta altra cosa, poiché spiega dettagliatamente che NON esiste alcuna necessità di orientare la città col sorgere sole. L'idea di calcolare la data di tracciamentocon la direzione del sorgere del sole è di Heinrich Nissen, 1869, e questo è un dato di fatto incontrovertibile. Ma che l'associazione tra la direzione del decumano e sorgere del solesia una conseguenza della religione e del diritto romanonon è vero, e questo è stato chiaramente dimostrato non solo da Valeton, ma anche da Pierangelo Catalano, 1978, nel suo studio sugli aspetti spaziali del sistema giuridico-religioso romano. Il Prof. Catalano è ordinario di Diritto Romano.
