151. Neutrino astronomy at the South Pole: Latest results from the IceCube neutrino observatory and its future development.

Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope located at the geographic South Pole. Buried deep under the Antarctic ice sheet, an array of 5160 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) is used to capture the Cherenkov light emitted by relativistic particles generated from neutrino interactions. The main goal of IceCube is the detection of astrophysical neutrinos. In 2013 the IceCube neutrino telescope discovered a high-energy diffuse flux of neutrino events with energy ranging from tens of TeV up to few PeV of cosmic origin. Meanwhile, different analyses confirm the discovery and search for possible correlations with astrophysical sources. However, the source of these neutrinos remains a mystery, since no counterparts have been identified yet. In this contribution we give an overview of the detection principles of IceCube, the most recent results, and the plans for a next-generation neutrino detector, dubbed IceCube-Gen2. Abstract

Although high-energy astrophysical neutrinos were discovered in 2013, their origin is still unknown. Aiming for the identification of an electromagnetic counterpart of a rapidly fading source, we have implemented a realtime analysis framework for the IceCube neutrino observatory. Several analyses selecting neutrinos of astrophysical origin are now operating in realtime at the detector site in Antarctica and are producing alerts for the community to enable rapid follow-up observations. The goal of these observations is to locate the astrophysical objects responsible for these neutrino signals. This paper highlights the infrastructure in place both at the South Pole site and at IceCube facilities in the north that have enabled this fast follow-up program to be implemented. Additionally, this paper presents the first realtime analyses to be activated within this framework, highlights their sensitivities to astrophysical neutrinos and background event rates, and presents an outlook for future discoveries. Investigation of lepton propagation through matter is of importance for cosmic-ray physics and neutrino astronomy. The diffractive scattering of virtual photons is considered as a process that leads to the energy loss of leptons emitting these photons. The interference between this process and bremsstrahlung makes a contribution that depends on the sign of the lepton charge.

156. Search for Transient Extragalactic Sources of Neutrinos with Ten Years of IceCube Data

Abstract

Despite more than a hundred years of observations, the cosmic-ray puzzle is still one of the most intriguing open questions in astrophysics. In the last decade, a multi-messenger approach has become available to address this problem: in this regard, neutrinos are ideal messengers, propagating undeflected by magnetic fields and unimpeded by particle interactions. This thesis presents searches for transient astrophysical neutrino sources using 10 years of data collected by the IceCube experiment from April 2008 to July 2018. These data are optimised for muon track-like events with TeV–PeV energies, that provide the best angular resolution. The searches consist of hypothesis tests based on an unbinned maximum-likelihood ratio. A multi-flare algorithm has been developed to reconstruct multiple flares from the same direction in the sky. This method is used to test multi-flare neutrino emission from a catalogue of gamma-ray emitters, mainly comprising active galactic nuclei, and from the whole sky. For both searches, a population study is additionally performed to look for an astrophysical signal from an ensemble of subthreshold sources. Multi-flare neutrino emission is tested from the direction of the blazar J0242+1101, as part of a follow-up program triggered by recent results presented by the ANTARES collaboration. A single-flare analysis is performed to search for neutrino emission from the prompt and targeted X-ray afterglow phases of gamma-ray bursts. For this analysis, a stacking method is also performed and improved with respect to previous analyses. These improvements consist of the introduction of physically motivated weights, and of the use of consolidated empirical correlations of the gamma-ray burst parameters during the prompt phase to infer the luminosity and Lorentz factor, when redshift measurements are not available. No significant neutrino emission has been observed from the aforementioned searches. Evidence at the 3-sigma level is provided from the multi-flare population study of the catalogue. M87 emerges as the most significant transient source, while TXS 0506+056 is the only multi-flare source of the catalogue, with the two prominent flares reconstructed for the first time by the same analysis. The non-observation of a significant neutrino emission is used to set upper limits on the neutrino fluence in each search. Furthermore, relevant parameters of the single-zone fireball model of gamma-ray bursts are constrained.

Abstract

The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. Abstract

Supernovae (SNe) are among the most energetic events in the universe still far from being fully understood. An early and prompt detection of neutrinos is a one-time opportunity for the realization of the first multi-messenger observation of these events. In this work, we present the prospects of detecting neutrinos produced before (pre-SN) and during a SN while running an advanced cryogenic detector. The recent advancements of the cryogenic detector technique and the discovery of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering offer a wealth of opportunities in neutrino detection. The combination of the excellent energy resolution of this experimental technique, with the high cross section of this detection channel and its equal sensitivity to all neutrino flavors enables the realization of highly sensitive cm-scale neutrino telescopes, as the newly proposed RES-NOVA experiment. We present a detailed study on the detection promptness of pre-SN and SN neutrino signals, with direct comparisons among different classes of test statistics. While the well-established Poisson test offers in general best performance under optimal conditions, the non-parametric Recursive Product of Spacing statistical test (RPS) is more robust and ideal for triggering astrophysical neutrino signals with no specific prior knowledge. Based on our statistical tests the RES-NOVA experiment is able to identify SN neutrino signals at a 15 kpc distance with 95% of success rate, and pre-SN signal as far as 480 pc with a pre-warn time of the order of 10 s. These results demonstrate the potential of RPS for the identification of neutrino signals and the physics reach of the RES-NOVA experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a multi-component detector at the South Pole which detects high-energy particles emerging from astrophysical events. These particles provide us with insights into the fundamental properties and behaviour of their sources. Besides its principal usage and merits in neutrino astronomy, using IceCube in conjunction with its surface array, IceTop, also makes it a unique three-dimensional cosmic-ray detector. This distinctive feature helps facilitate detailed cosmic-ray analysis in the transition region from galactic to extragalactic sources. We will present the progress made on multiple fronts to establish a framework for mass-estimation of primary cosmic rays. The first technique relies on a likelihood-based analysis of the surface signal distribution and improves upon the standard reconstruction technique. The second uses advanced methods in graph neural networks to use the full in-ice shower footprint, in addition to global shower-footprint features from IceTop. Abstract

Air-Cherenkov telescopes have mapped the Galactic plane at TeV energies. Here we evaluate the prospects for detecting the neutrino emission from sources in the Galactic plane assuming that the highest energy photons originate from the decay of pions, which yields a straightforward prediction for the neutrino flux from the decay of the associated production of charged pions. Four promising sources are identified based on having a large flux and a flat spectrum. We subsequently evaluate the probability of their identification above the atmospheric neutrino background in IceCube data as a function of time. We show that observing them over the twenty-year lifetime of the instrumentation is likely, and that some should be observable at the 3  σ level with six years of data. In the absence of positive results, we derive constraints on the spectral index and cut-off energy of the sources, assuming a hadronic acceleration mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has discovered a diffuse all-flavor flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. However, the corresponding astrophysical sources have not yet been identified. Neither significant point sources nor significant angular correlations of event directions have been observed by IceCube or other instruments to date. We present a new method to interpret the non-observation of angular correlations in terms of exclusions on the strength and number of point-like neutrino sources in generic astrophysical scenarios. Additionally, we constrain the presence of these sources taking into account the measurement of the diffuse high-energy neutrino flux by IceCube. We apply the method to two types of astrophysically motivated source count distributions: The first type is obtained by considering the cosmological evolution of the co-moving density of active galaxies, while the second type is directly derived from the gamma ray source count distribution observed by Fermi-LAT. We show that the Galactic latitude distribution of IceCube astrophysical neutrino events with energies above 100 TeV is inconsistent with the isotropic model of the astrophysical neutrino flux. Namely, the Galactic latitude distribution of the events shows an excess at low latitudes | b | < 10° and a deficit at high Galactic latitude | b | ≳50°. We use Monte–Carlo simulations to show that the inconsistency of the isotropic signal model with the data is at ≳3 σ level, after the account of trial factors related to the choice of the low-energy threshold and Galactic latitude binning in our analysis. Abstract

The IceCube neutrino observatory built in the antarctic ice offers unique opportunities in studying high energy neutrino emission from Galactic and extragalactic sources. Detecting such neutrino emission could give valuable information about the origin of cosmic rays. Recently, first evidence for a diffuse astrophysical neutrino signal in the PeV range was found with IceCube. There is no clear point source signal yet, and advanced analysis methods are being developed in order to improve the sensitivity to point sources and resolve the diffuse signal into point sources. Other searches like a energy-dependent likelihood scan were already performed on IceCube data. In this paper, we report a complementary search for multiple neutrino point sources from three years of IceCube data, performing an autocorrelation test on the full sky. This analysis is aiming for various faint sources at unknown positions and energy spectra in the sky. The result obtained from this search is consistant with a background-only case and shows an underfluctuation. Here, we present limits using the ansatz of the small-scale anisotropy search. Neutrinos are unique probes to study the high energy Universe, since they are neutral, only interact weakly and are stable. Furthermore, they can provide key information about several fundamental questions in Physics like the origin of cosmic rays and the nature of dark matter. The ANTARES neutrino telescope, installed in the Mediterranean Sea, has been taking data since 2007. In this paper we review the results concerning the search for point sources of cosmic neutrinos, using data of 2007-2012. Two main strategies have been followed: to look towards the direction of sources candidate to emmit neutrinos and to make an all-sky scan. KM3NeT is a future research infrastructure in the Mediterranean Sea, hosting a multi-cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope and nodes for Earth and Sea sciences. In this report we shortly summarise the genesis of the KM3NeT project and present key elements of its technical design. The physics objectives of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope and some selected sensitivity estimates are discussed. The ANTARES experiment is currently the largest underwater neutrino telescope in the Northern Hemisphere. It is taking high quality data since 2007. Its main scientific goal is to search for high energy neutrinos that are expected from the acceleration of cosmic rays from astrophysical sources. This contribution reviews the status of the detector and presents several analyses carried out on atmospheric muons and neutrinos. For example it shows the results from the measurement of atmospheric muon neutrino spectrum and of atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters as well as searches for neutrinos from steady cosmic point-like sources, for neutrinos from gamma ray bursts and for relativistic magnetic monopoles. Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) occur when stars pass close to supermassive black holes, and have long been predicted to emit cosmic rays and neutrinos. Recently the TDE AT2109dsg was identified in spatial and temporal coincidence with high-energy neutrino IC191001A as part of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) neutrino follow-up program, providing the first direct observational evidence supporting these objects as multi-messenger sources. Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande detector can be used to search for neutrinos in time coincidence with gravitational waves detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC). Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4\sigma$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. v2: adding corrections from The Astrophysical Journal review

Abstract

International audience; Icecube neutrino detector a cubic kilometer in South Pole, traces energetic TeVs-PeVs neutrino signals by their cascades or better by their tracks inside its icy volume. Cascades, explosivespherical showers in icy, are mostly for electron or tau or neutral current, tracks are made by muons. High energy tau tracks might show a birth place cascade and a second decay tau shower,allowing a peculiar directional track. In general hundreds TeVs-PeVs Cascades show very poor directionality. Therefore they are nearly blind to disentangle the source event. Therefore wesuggest to neglect such cascades in future Gen-2 Icecube. Indeed the most interesting signals are the tens TeVs up to PeVs muon upgoing tracks, either born inside, HESE, or outside Icecube: thetrought going muon tracks. These ones are more abundant at ultra high energy (UHE) regimes because their interactions is outside the Icecube, mainly in the wider volume of dense rock aroundand below the Icecube volume. Such several kilometers tracks offer the most energetic and precise neutrino astronomy. Moreover highest tens TeV or PeVs neutrinos become opaque to theEarth radius. Therefore they are arriving mainly as up-going nearly horizontal tracks, because they are crossing only short Earth cords. In consequence we suggest an upgrade Muon Icecubedetector by a widest kilometers spaced concentric spiral array rings (around old Icecube), each arm nearly a kilometer far from the other, leading to the largest and widest array net (for anygiven string number). Such wider (km) empty array volumes, like a sponge, may better amplify, almost quadratically, the observed mass volume, in comparision to a more dense but homogeneousvolumetric cubic one (at 240 or 330 meters distance among strings) as the Icecube Gen-2 project. In our first approximation one may obtain an increased cubic volume reaching about 50 times the kilometer Icecube array, by a shell like spiral volume or a honeycomb cell net, leading not to a few rare (hundred TeV energy) event a year but to many tens or even a hundred of such neutrino tracks each year, running toward a more statistical rich astronomy.

Abstract

[EN] A novel method to analyse the spatial distribution of neutrino candidates recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope is introduced, searching for an excess of neutrinos in a region of arbitrary size and shape from any direction in the sky. Techniques originating from the domains of machine learning, pat- tern recognition and image processing are used to purify the sample of neutrino candidates and for the analysis of the obtained skymap. In contrast to a dedicated search for a speci¿c neutrino emission model, this approach is sensitive to a wide range of possible morphologies of potential sources of high-energy neutrino emission. The application of these methods to ANTARES data yields a large-scale excess with a post-trial signi¿cance of 2.5¿ . Abstract

Our universe carries a small but important population of highly energetic denizens: supernova remnants with fast shocks, pulsars with powerful winds, intensely-interacting binary systems built from a compact object and a massive star, relativistic jets launched by supermassive black holes. All of these environments conspire to generate populations of nonthermal particles, and observations of the very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma rays produced by these particles are gradually revealing the methods by which Nature accelerates cosmic rays, as well as the ways in which those cosmic rays escape and diffuse into the interstellar medium. These observations include studies of cosmic-ray acceleration in the supernova remnants Cassiopeia A and IC 443, follow-up of unidentified HAWC sources, and the remarkable Fall 2017 periastron passage of VER J2032+4127, the 50-year-period binary system containing PSR J2032+4127 and a Be star. Fast TeV gamma-ray flares coincidental with the emergence of superluminal radio knots from the blazar BL Lac can be interpreted in terms of a coherent scenario of jet particle flow and radiation. The recent TeV gamma-ray discovery of the radio galaxy 3C 264 adds a new member to the small population of off-axis jets available for study. Meanwhile, the direct detection for the first time of gravitational wave (GW) transients by Advanced LIGO has motivated searches for their electromagnetic counterparts at all wavelengths. Neutrino astronomy is an emerging area of study in high-energy astrophysics, and astrophysical neutrinos are natural cousins of VHE gamma rays. The VERITAS gamma-ray observatory has an active program of follow-up observations in the directions of potentially astrophysical high-energy neutrinos detected by IceCube, as well as in the direction of GW transients. In this talk, we discuss recent results from the VERITAS galactic, extragalactic, and multi-messenger Follow-up programs.

Abstract

The surface detector array (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos at energies in the 100 PeV to 100 EeV range. This sensitivity, together with its large acceptance, makes it a complementary detector to other neutrino telescopes, which have their peak sensitivities at lower energies. The neutrino-induced air showers that the SD of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to can be divided into those induced by interactions of neutrinos of any flavor deep in the atmosphere, and those induced by charged-current interactions of tau neutrinos in the Earth's crust. Both of these types can be efficiently distinguished from cosmic ray-induced air showers, provided that their zenith angles are larger than 60{\deg}. As no neutrino candidates were found in the performed searches, we present limits on the diffuse all-flavor neutrino flux. Using these limits, we obtained constraints on cosmic-ray and neutrino production models. In the light of the recent observations of gravitational waves (GW), we also present the follow-up of LIGO/Virgo GW events. Abstract

Cosmic-ray interactions with the solar atmosphere are expected to produce particle showers which in turn produce neutrinos from weak decays of mesons. These solar atmospheric neutrinos (SAνs) have never been observed experimentally. A detection would be an important step in understanding cosmic-ray propagation in the inner solar system and the dynamics of solar magnetic fields. SAνs also represent an irreducible background to solar dark matter searches and a detection would allow precise characterization of this background. Here, we present the first experimental search based on seven years of data collected from May 2010 to May 2017 in the austral winter with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. An unbinned likelihood analysis is performed for events reconstructed within 5 degrees of the center of the Sun. No evidence for a SAν flux is observed. 180. Searches for cross-correlations between IceCube neutrinos and Active Galactic Nuclei selected in various bands of the electromagnetic spectrum

Abstract

Das IceCube Neutrino Teleskop hat einen diffusen Fluss hochenergetischen astrophysikalischen Neutrinos entdeckten. Allerdings sind die Quellen die für die Mehrzahl der nachgewiesenen Neutrinos verantwortlich sind, noch unbekannt. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Möglichkeit, dass der beobachtete Neutrino-Fluss im Zentrum von aktiven galaktischen Kernen (AGN) erzeugt wird. Eine Stacking-Analyse wird durchgeführt, um die Korrelation zwischen verschiedenen Subpopulationen von AGN und hochenergetischen Neutrinos unter Verwendung von IceCube-Daten aus acht Jahren zu testen. AGN werden anhand ihrer Radioemission, Infrarot-Farbeigenschaften und ihres Röntgenflusses. Die Leuchtkraft der Akkretionsscheibe wird verwendet, um den Beitrag ausgewählter Galaxien zum Neutrinosignal zu gewichten. Die leuchtende AGN-Population trägt zu ~52% des von IceCube gemessenen diffusen Flusses bei 100 TeV mit einem Best-Fit-Spektralindex von 2 bei mit 2.83 sigma post-trial Signifikanz. Für die AGN-Probe mit geringer Leuchtkraft wird eine Signifikanz nach dem Versuch von nur 0.66 sigma gefunden, daher werden Obergrenzen festgelegt. Unter Annahme des Spektralindex für den astrophysikalischen Fluss von 2 und einer gleichverteilten gleiche Zusammensetzung Neutrinoflavour-Zusammensetzung auf der Erde, wird eine obere Flussgrenze berechnet, die den maximalen Beitrag der Kerne von AGN mit geringer Leuchtkraft zum diffusen TeV-PeV-Neutrino-Fluss auf ~51% bei 100 TeV beschränkt. Für diese Arbeit wurde auch eine neue Rekonstruktionsmethode entwickelt. In IceCube werden hochenergetische Myon-neutrinos durch die sekundären Myonen identifiziert, die durch Wechselwirkungen über geladene Ströme mit dem Eis erzeugt werden. In dem hier vorgestellten Rekonstruktionsschema wird die erwartete Ankunftszeitverteilung durch ein vorbestimmtes stochastisches Myon-Energieverlustprofil parametrisiert. Diese realistischere Parametrisierung führt zu einer Verbesserung der Myon-Winkelauflösung in IceCube um etwa 20%., The IceCube neutrino telescope has measured a diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. However, the sources responsible for the emission of the majority of the detected neutrinos are still unknown. The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibility that the neutrino flux observed by IceCube is produced in the cores of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A stacking analysis is conducted to test for a correlation between various sub-populations of AGN and high-energy neutrinos using eight years of IceCube data. AGN are selected based on their radio emission, infrared color properties, and X-ray flux using the NVSS, AllWISE, ROSAT and XMMSL2 catalogs. The accretion disk luminosity estimated by the observed soft X-ray flux is used as a proxy for the contribution of selected galaxies to the neutrino signal. Two of the three AGN samples tested in this analysis show over-fluctuations, with the highest significance being of 2.83 sigma after trial correction. The luminous AGN population is found to contribute to ~52% of the diffuse flux measured by IceCube at 100 TeV with a best-fit spectral index of 2. For the low-luminosity AGN sample a post-trial significance of only 0.66 sigma is found, therefore upper limits are set. Assuming the spectral index for the astrophysical flux to be 2 and an equal composition of neutrino flavours arriving at Earth, an upper flux limit is calculated which constrains the maximal contribution of the cores of low-luminosity AGN to the diffuse TeV-PeV neutrino flux to be ~51% at 100 TeV. A new reconstruction method has also been developed for this thesis. In IceCube high-energy muon neutrinos are identified through the secondary muons produced via charge current interactions with the ice. In the reconstruction scheme presented in this thesis, the expected arrival time distribution is parameterized by a predetermined stochastic muon energy loss pattern, leading to an improvement of about 20% to the muon angular resolution of IceCube.

Abstract

The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to gamma-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the Universe. However, at PeV (10(15) eV) energies and above, most of the Universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the Universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. These energetic particles have millions of times higher energies than those produced in the most powerful particle accelerators on Earth. As neutrinos can escape from regions otherwise opaque to radiation, they allow an unique view deep into exploding stars and the vicinity of the event horizons of black holes. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the Universe. IceCube has been successful in finding first evidence for cosmic particle acceleration in the jet of an active galactic nucleus. Yet, ultimately, its sensitivity is too limited to detect even the brightest neutrino sources with high significance, or to detect populations of less luminous sources. In this white paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the Universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: (a) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies (b) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations (c) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the Universe (d) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos IceCube-Gen2 will enhance the existing IceCube detector at the South Pole. It will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. As an observatory with a 4 pi steradian field of view, and similar to 99% uptime, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a unique facility to follow up transients, as well as to provide valuable insights for other observatories and inform their observational decisions. Since 2016, IceCube has been using low-latency data to rapidly respond to interesting astrophysical events reported by the multi-messenger observational community. Here, we describe the pipeline used to perform these followup analyses, and provide a summary of the 58 analyses performed as of July 2020. We find no significant signal in the first 58 analyses performed. The pipeline has helped inform various electromagnetic observation strategies, and has constrained neutrino emission from potential hadronic cosmic accelerators.

Abstract

The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. Abstract

KM3NeT is a multi-purpose cubic-kilometer neutrino observatory in construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of ORCA and ARCA (for Oscillation and Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss, respectively); currently both have a few detection lines in operation. Although having different primary goals, both detectors can be used to do neutrino astronomy over a wide energy range, from a few GeV to a few tens of PeV. In view of the growing field of time-domain astronomy, it is increasingly crucial to be able to identify neutrinos in real-time. This online neutrino sample will serve to trigger neutrino alerts that will be sent to the astronomy community and to look for time/space coincidence around external electromagnetic and multi-messenger triggers. These real-time searches can significantly increase the discovery potential of transient cosmic accelerators and refine the pointing directions in the case of poorly localized triggers, such as gravitational waves. In the field of core-collapse supernovae (CCSN), the detection of the MeVscale CCSN neutrinos is crucial as an early warning. KM3NeT’s digital optical modules act as good detectors for these neutrinos. Abstract

The KM3NeT collaboration is constructing two large neutrino detectors in the Mediterranean Sea: KM3NeT/ARCA, located near Sicily and aiming at neutrino astronomy, and KM3NeT/ORCA, located near Toulon and designed for neutrino oscillation studies. The two detectors, together, will have hundreds of Detection Units (DUs) with 18 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) maintained vertical by buoyancy, forming a large 3D optical array for detecting the Cherenkov light produced by particle produced in neutrino interactions. To properly reconstruct the direction of the incoming neutrino, the position of the DOMs must be known precisely with an accuracy of less than 10 cm, and since the DUs are affected by sea current the position will be measured every 10 minutes. For this purpose, there are acoustic and orientation sensors inside the DOMs. An Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) chip provides the components values of the Acceleration and Magnetic field in the DOM, from which it is possible to calculate Yaw, Pitch, and Roll for each floor of the line. A piezo sensor detects the signals from fixed acoustic emitters on the sea floor, so to position it by trilateration. Data from these sensors are used as an input to reconstruct the shape of the entire line based on a DU Line Fit mechanical model. 186. ANTARES search for point sources of neutrinos using astrophysical catalogs: a likelihood analysis

Abstract

A search for astrophysical pointlike neutrino sources using the data collected by the ANTARES detector between 2007 January 29 and 2017 December 31 is presented. A likelihood method is used to assess the significance of an excess of muon neutrinos inducing track-like events in correlation with the location of a list of possible sources. Different sets of objects are tested in the analysis: (a) a subsample of the Fermi 3LAC catalog of blazars, (b) a jetobscured population of active galactic nuclei, (c) a sample of hard X-ray selected radio galaxies, (d) a star-forming galaxy catalog, and (e) a public sample of 56 very-high-energy track events from the IceCube experiment. None of the tested sources shows a significant association with the sample of neutrinos detected by ANTARES. The smallest p-value is obtained for the catalog of radio galaxies with an equal-weights hypothesis, with a pre-trial pvalue equivalent to a 2.8s excess, which is equivalent to 1.6s post-trial. In addition, the results of a dedicated analysis for the blazar MG3 J225517+2409 are also reported: this source is found to be the most significant within the Fermi 3LAC sample, with five ANTARES events located less than one degree from the source. This blazar showed evidence of flaring activity in Fermi data, in spacetime coincidence with a high-energy track detected by IceCube. Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration is constructing two deep-sea Cherenkov detectors in the Mediterranean Sea, aiming at neutrino oscillation measurements with the ORCA array, while the ARCA array aims at neutrino astronomy in the TeV range. In April 2021, 5 additional detection units were deployed in the ARCA site. The KM3NeT/ARCA instrumented volume is currently similar to the one of the ANTARES neutrino telescope. In this contribution, an analysis of the data obtained with the detector before April 2021 is presented as well as the analysis of the very first data from the new KM3NeT/ARCA configuration. 188. Flavors of astrophysical neutrinos with active-sterile mixing

Abstract

We revisit the flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed at neutrino telescopes. Assuming unitary time evolution of the neutrino flavor states, the flavor composition observable at Earth is related to the initial composition at their sources via oscillation-averaged flavor transitions. In a previous study we derived general bounds on the flavor composition of TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos assuming three-flavor unitary mixing. We extend these bounds to the case of active-sterile neutrino mixing. Our bounds are analytical, derived based only on the unitarity of the mixing, and do not require sampling over the values of the unknown active-sterile mixing parameters. These bounds apply to any extended active-sterile neutrino mixing scenario where energy-dependent nonstandard flavor mixing dominates over the standard mixing observed in accelerator, reactor, and atmospheric neutrino oscillations.

Abstract

The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) is designed to accurately observe ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and cosmic neutrinos from space with sensitivity over the full celestial sky. POEMMA will observe the air fluorescence produced by extensive air showers (EASs) from UHECRs and potentially UHE neutrinos above 20 EeV. Additionally, POEMMA has the ability to observe the Cherenkov signal from upward-moving EASs induced by Earth-interacting tau neutrinos above 20PeV. The POEMMA spacecraft are designed to quickly re-orientate to follow up transient neutrino sources and obtain currently unparalleled neutrino flux sensitivity. Developed as a NASA Astrophysics Probe-class mission, POEMMA consists of two identical satellites flying in loose formation in 525km altitude orbits. Each POEMMA instrument incorporates a wide fieldof-view (45 degrees) Schmidt telescope with an optical collecting area of over 6m(2). The hybrid focal surface of each telescope includes a fast (1 mu s) near-ultraviolet camera for EAS fluorescence observations and an ultrafast (10 ns) optical camera for Cherenkov EAS observations. In a 5=year mission, POEMMA will provide measurements that open new multi-messenger windows onto the most energetic events in the universe, enabling the study of new astrophysics and particle physics at these extreme energies.

Abstract

In multi-messenger astronomy, rapid investigation of interesting transients is imperative. As an observatory with a 4 pi steradian field of view, and similar to 99% uptime, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a unique facility to follow up transients, as well as to provide valuable insights for other observatories and inform their observational decisions. Since 2016, IceCube has been using low-latency data to rapidly respond to interesting astrophysical events reported by the multi-messenger observational community. Here, we describe the pipeline used to perform these followup analyses, and provide a summary of the 58 analyses performed as of July 2020. We find no significant signal in the first 58 analyses performed. The pipeline has helped inform various electromagnetic observation strategies, and has constrained neutrino emission from potential hadronic cosmic accelerators.

Abstract

International audience; The KM3NeT collaboration is currently building a new generation of large-volume water-Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean sea. Two detectors, ARCA and ORCA, are under construction. They feature different neutrino energy thresholds: TeV range for ARCA and GeV range for ORCA. The main research goal of ORCA is the measurement of the neutrino mass ordering and atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters, while the detector is also sensitive to a wide variety of other physics topics, including non-standard interactions, sterile neutrinos and Earth tomography, as well as low-energy neutrino astronomy. This contribution will present an overview of the updated ORCA sensitivity projection to its main science objectives, including - but not limited to - the measurement of the neutrino mass ordering and oscillation parameters Future perspectives for ORCA to serve as far detector for a long baseline neutrino experiment with a neutrino beam from the U70 accelerator complex at Protvino in Russia will also be discussed.

Abstract

A radio-frequency polarization measurement by the ARIANNA surface station was performed using a residual hole from the South Pole Ice Core (SPICEcore) Project. Radio pulses were emitted from a transmitter located down to 1.7 km below the snow surface. After deconvolving the raw signals for the detector response and attenuation from propagation through the ice, the signal pulses show no significant distortion and agree with a reference measurement of the emitter made in an anechoic chamber. The direction to transmitted radio pulse was measured with an angular resolution of 0.37 degree [statistical error]. For polarization, the statistical error of the polarization vector is depth dependent and below 1 degree. In addition, a slow systematic error as a function of depth is 2.7 degrees. Neither the direction or polarization measurement show a significant offset as a function of depth relative to expectation. We also report on the results of a simulation study of the ARIANNA neutrino direction and energy resolution. The software tool NuRadioMC was used to reconstruct the polarization and viewing angle to determine the neutrino direction. Multiple models of Askaryan radiation and detector sites along with a range of neutrino energies were evaluated. The neutrino space angle resolution was determined to be below 3 degrees, which is comparable to the systematic polarization uncertainty. Therefore it is expected that the polarization resolution, which is the dominant contribution to the neutrino space angle resolution, will be improved in future studies by determining and eliminating systematic effects.

Abstract

Recently, a diffuse emission of 1-100 GeV $\gamma$-rays has been detected from the direction of Andromeda. The emission is centered on the galaxy, and extends for $\sim 100-200$ kpc away from its center. Explaining the extended $\gamma-$ray emission within the framework of standard scenarios for the escape of cosmic rays injected in the galactic disk or in the galactic center is problematic. In this paper, we argue that a cosmic ray origin (either leptonic or hadronic) of the $\gamma$-ray emission is possible in the framework of non standard cosmic ray propagation scenarios or in the case of particle acceleration taking place in the galaxy's halo. It would imply the existence of a giant cosmic ray halo surrounding M31, possibly powered by the galaxy nuclear activity, or by accretion of intergalactic gas. Remarkably, if cosmic ray halos, as the one observed around M31, are a common feature of galaxies, including our own, the interactions between cosmic ray protons and the Milky Way circumgalactic gas could also explain the isotropic diffuse flux of neutrinos observed by Icecube., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 13 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In this paper, we study the spin transitions of neutrinos caused by the interaction with a gravitational field. We consider a model with a scalar field (describing screening effects) conformally coupled to matter and neutrinos. The presence of screening effects suppresses the neutrino spin-flip probability as compared with General Relativity predictions. Such a result could be used, combined with neutrino astronomy, for testing modified theories of gravity and, in turn, screening effects invoked to bypass the solar system and Lab tests. Such an analysis has been also extended to the case of the quintessence field surrounding a black hole. Here we investigate the flavor and spin transitions, showing that also in such a case exists a suppression of the effect compared to General Relativity prediction., 14 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to γ-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the Universe. However, at PeV (1015 eV) energies and above, most of the Universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the Universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. These energetic particles havemillions of times higher energies than those produced in the most powerful particle accelerators on Earth. As neutrinos can escape from regions otherwise opaque to radiation, they allow an unique view deep into exploding stars and the vicinity of the event horizons of black holes. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the Universe. IceCube has been successful in finding first evidence for cosmic particle acceleration in the jet of an active galactic nucleus. Yet, ultimately, its sensitivity is too limited to detect even the brightest neutrino sources with high significance, or to detect populations of less luminous sources. In thiswhite paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the Universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: (a) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies (b) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations (c) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the Universe (d) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos IceCube-Gen2 will enhance the existing IceCube detector at the South Pole. It will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. Furthermore, through the addition of a radio array, IceCube- Gen2 will extend the energy range by several orders of magnitude compared to IceCube. Construction will take 8 years and cost about $350M. The goal is to have IceCube-Gen2 fully operational by 2033. IceCube-Gen2 will play an essential role in shaping the new era of multimessenger astronomy, fundamentally advancing our knowledge of the highenergy Universe. This challenging mission can be fully addressed only through the combination of the information from the neutrino, electromagnetic, and gravitational wave emission of high-energy sources, in concert with the new survey instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum and gravitational wave detectors which will be available in the coming years.

Abstract

Previous detections of an X-ray emission line near 3.5 keV in galaxy clusters and other dark matter-dominated objects have been interpreted as observational evidence for the decay of sterile neutrino dark matter. Motivated by this, we report on a search for a 3.5 keV emission line from the Milky Way's galactic dark matter halo with HaloSat. As a single pixel, collimated instrument, HaloSat observations are impervious to potential systematic effects due to grazing incidence reflection and CCD pixelization, and thus may offer a check on possible instrumental systematic errors in previous analyses. We report non-detections of a $\sim$3.5 keV emission line in four HaloSat observations near the Galactic Center. In the context of the sterile neutrino decay interpretation of the putative line feature, we provide 90% confidence level upper limits on the 3.5 keV line flux and 7.1 keV sterile neutrino mixing angle: $F \leq 0.077$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ and $\sin^2(2\theta) \leq 4.25 \times 10^{-11}$. The HaloSat mixing angle upper limit was calculated using a modern parameterization of the Milky Way's dark matter distribution, and in order to compare with previous limits, we also report the limit calculated using a common historical model. The HaloSat mixing angle upper limit places constraints on a number of previous mixing angle estimates derived from observations of the Milky Way's dark matter halo and galaxy clusters, and excludes several previous detections of the line. The upper limits cannot, however, entirely rule out the sterile neutrino decay interpretation of the 3.5 keV line feature., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Neutrino telescope IceCube has recently discovered astrophysical neutrinos with energies in the TeV–PeV range. We use the data of Fermi γ -ray telescope to demonstrate that the neutrino signal has significant contribution from the Milky Way Galaxy. Matching the γ -ray and neutrino spectra we find that TeV–PeV Galactic cosmic rays form a powerlaw spectrum with the slope p ≃ 2.45. This spectral slope is consistent with the average cosmic ray spectrum in the disks of the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud galaxies. It is also consistent with the theoretical model of cosmic ray injection by diffusive shock acceleration followed by escape through the Galactic magnetic field with Kolmogorov turbulence. The locally observed TeV–PeV cosmic ray proton spectrum is softer than the average Galactic cosmic ray spectrum. This could be readily explained by variability of injection of cosmic rays in the local interstellar medium over the past 10 7 year and discreetness of the cosmic ray source distribution. Abstract

Cosmic rays (charged particles), γ-rays and neutrinos offer unique opportunities to extend the search for dark matter, to test quantum gravity phenomenology through the study of the invariance of the group of Lorentz transformations, and to probe the existence of sterile neutrinos. We discuss here these tests of beyond the Standard Model particle physics with present and planned future missions including the Pierre Auger Observatory, the space-borne mission Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02), Fermi-LAT, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC), the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory as presently operating experiments, and the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and the IceCube-Gen2 as future large scale infrastructures.
