Inferring mobile phone users' home location, i.e., assigning a location in space to a user based on data generated by the mobile phone network, is a central task in leveraging mobile phone data to study social and urban phenomena. Despite its widespread use, home detection relies on assumptions that are difficult to check without ground truth, i.e., where the individual who owns the device resides. In this paper, we present a dataset that comprises the mobile phone activity of sixty-five participants for whom the geographical coordinates of their residence location are known. The mobile phone activity refers to Call Detail Records (CDRs), eXtended Detail Records (XDRs), and Control Plane Records (CPRs), which vary in their temporal granularity and differ in the data generation mechanism. We provide an unprecedented evaluation of the accuracy of home detection algorithms and quantify the amount of data needed for each stream to carry out successful home detection for each stream. Using large-scale call detail records of anonymised mobile phone service subscribers with demographic and location information, we investigate how a long-distance residential move within the country affects the mobile communication patterns between an ego who moved and a frequently called alter who did not move. By using clustering methods in analysing the call frequency time series, we find that such ego-alter pairs are grouped into two clusters, those with the call frequency increasing and those with the call frequency decreasing after the move of the ego. This indicates that such residential moves are correlated with a change in the communication pattern soon after moving. We find that the pre-move calling behaviour is a relevant predictor for the post-move calling behaviour. While demographic and location information can help in predicting whether the call frequency will rise or decay, they are not relevant in predicting the actual call frequency volume. People's daily movements, as aggregated in spatial units, shape mobility flows that can be modelled by geospatial networks. The structure of these networks both reflects and influences how cities are lived in, perceived and planned. In this study, location tracking data from mobile phones were used to investigate the functional and spatial structures of daily mobility networks and how these networks change as they grow in size. A case study was performed on 81 Spanish functional Urban Areas (FUAs). The results of this study show that the friction of the space and the average length of the aggregate daily mobility are constant and do not depend on the area and demographic size of the FUAs. The average length of the aggregate daily mobility is associated with the increase in complexity that occurs as mobility networks grow, which is reflected in an increase in the number of levels of interaction and the proportion of local flows that integrate adjacent spaces across different scales. The method used provides quantitative indicators that reveal the similarities and differences of daily mobility, as well as the interactions that occur in FUAs according to their size. Stimulating more citizens to walk plays an essential role in building a healthy city. This paper explores the mismatch between walkability and walking behavior, using mobile phone data, street view images, and various sources of open data. Using Shenzhen as our case study, we identified walking trips of 6 months in 2021 from cellular mobile data, taking the rule-based heuristics approach. We collected ground truth GPS data to validate the walking trip extraction method. Open data and deep learning enabled quantifying walkability from the perspective of four pedestrian needs: safety, convenience, continuity, and attractiveness. We employed geospatial techniques to identify the mismatch areas between walkability and walking behavior in the city. We also explored the spatially varying effects of walkability on walking behavior. Our results showed that the mismatch areas with high-level walking trips but low-level walkability mainly occurred in the fringe areas of the central business district (CBD) and subcenters that require prioritizing more interventions. Moreover, walkability showed strong effects on walking trips in the inner suburbs. For the four aspects of our walkability framework, safety and convenience had greater positive effects on walking trips in suburbs than in urban areas. Continuity promotes walking trips mainly in the city's western sector. The positive effect of attractiveness on walking trips clustered in the central and western parts of the city. Despite being a long-established research topic, most urban segregation studies have neither explored the socio-spatial disparities beyond the context of housing, nor systematically examined both residential and non-residential segregation patterns at a very fine spatial scale. Recently, mobile phone data has been increasingly used as a data source to investigate experiences of segregation. While being celebrated for its high spatiotemporal resolution, mobile phone data analysis is often limited by the lack of users' socioeconomic information. To fill these gaps and by taking a small Chinese county city, Longgang, as the case of study, we measure migrants' residential and working segregation experiences through mobile phone data at a 100-metre scale. Results showed that both working and residential populations show a high level of segregation using the population diversity and location quotient indicators, but the segregation experienced by working population is less than that by residential population. Migrants are highly segregated with local citizens, but less segregated in some areas like the industrial zones surrounding the traditional downtown area. Abstract With the all-pervading mobile devices and continuing advancement of big data technologies, mobile phone data research has been gaining widespread popularity in the past few years. Dealing with the implausible location caused by cell handover phenomenon in the communication system is one key problem of user mobility profile building based on mobile phone call detail records (CDRs) data. In this paper, we propose a location discrimination model aiming at CDRs data, where heuristic strategies for the characteristic of the oscillation phenomenon from practical CDRs and handover categories are added to distinguish the stay points, passing points, and oscillating points. A whole month of CDRs data from one communication operator is employed to select parameters and validate the model on the Spark platform. The experiment results betray that the proposed model can identify the false locations effectively. Compared with the threshold models, the result of the proposed model is more reasonable both in the population aggregate level and individual level. Besides, the model can retain more user’s trajectory points than clustering algorithm, so it can improve the quality of user mobility modeling.

Introduction: There have been many studies conducted on the effects of mobile phones radiations on people’s health due to increasing number of mobile phones users. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of electromagnetic waves generated from 3G and 4G mobile phone radiations on student’s reaction time and short-term memory. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive-analytic study. A sample of 85 medical students from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the age range of 18-22 years was selected. After 10-min exposure to 3G and 4G mobile waves without any prognoses if mobile phone was on or off, response time and short-term memory tests were taken at once. The groups then left laboratory for about 2 h to take a rest, and they came back to laboratory to carry out the second mode of testing after two h (mobile phones on or off related to previous test). Abstract Due to the rise of communication technologies and economic globalization, modern large cities are becoming more and more interconnected and this phenomenon leads to an increasing synchronization in activities and communication patterns. In our work, we explore the communication synchronization between 76 Italian cities of different sizes by using mobile phone data. Our results show that both the spatial distance and the size of the city influence the synchronization: larger cities are more similar to larger cities in communication rhythms than medium cities are to medium cities, and medium cities are more similar to medium cities than smaller cities are to smaller cities. Furthermore, for all the cities’ sizes we observe a drift in similarity due to spatial distance. Interestingly, the drift due to distance over similarity is less strong in large cities, that act as gateway nodes for the Italian economical system, hence having an emerging strongly connected and synchronized network, than for medium and small cities, that are more bounded to local industries. Finally, our results also show that highly synchronized cities are richer and more attractive for foreign-born population.

The modern outdoor advertising industry is introducing new technologies to attract attention and enhance effective reach. However, displaying the pertinent advertisements (ads) and maximizing their coverage are still a challenge, as little is known about the interests of passersby. In this paper, we attempted to fill this gap by 1) identifying the individuals' interests extracted from the mobile phone internet usage data, and 2) analyzing the individuals' mobility patterns acquired from the mobile phone location data. Based on these data, the problem of distributing the outdoor ads to the maximum reach of the potentially interested users was further formulated as a maximal covering location problem (MCLP). Specifically, a continuous space maximal coverage model, the MCLP-complementary coverage (MCLP-CC), was utilized to search for the optimal locations for a given category of advertisements. Finally, the proposed methodology was applied to Wuxue, a city in central China, as a case study. The calculation results show that when setting the same number of places for outdoor advertising, our approach achieves an average of 69% improvement compared with the current dominant ads placement approach (selecting the most crowded location) in reaching the potential target audiences. An average of 15% improvement compared with the classic MCLP model. Overall, this paper demonstrates the value of the mobile phone data for interest-driven outdoor advertising and its potential applications in other mobile services.

Urban parks provide multiple benefits to human well-being and human health. Big data provide new and powerful ways to study visitors’ feelings, activities in urban parks, and the effect they themselves have on urban parks. However, the term “big data” has been defined variably, and its applications on urban parks have so far been sporadic in research. Therefore, a comprehensive review of big data-based urban park research is much needed. The review aimed to summarize the big data-based urban park research in visitor dimension by a systematic review approach in combination with bibliometric and thematic analyses. The results showed that the number of publications of related articles has been increasing exponentially in recent years. Users’ days data is used most frequently in the big data-based urban park research, and the major analytical methods are of four types: sentiment analysis, statistical analysis, and spatial analysis. The major research topics of big data-based urban park research in visitor dimension include visitors’ behavior, visitors’ perception and visitors’ effect. Big data benefits urban park research by providing low-cost, timely information, a people-oriented perspective, and fine-grained site information. However, its accuracy is insufficient because of coordinate, keyword classification and different kinds of users. To move forward, future research should integrate multiple big data sources, expand the application, such as public health and human–nature interactions, and pay more attention to the big data use for overcoming pandemic. This review can help to understand the current situation of big data-based urban park research, and provide a reference for the studies of this topic in the future.

Sensing the nighttime economy–housing imbalance is of great importance for urban planning and commerce. As an efficient tool of social sensing and human observation, mobile phone data provides an effective way to address this issue. In this paper, an indicator, mobile phone data-based nighttime economy–housing imbalance intensity, is proposed to measure the degree of the nighttime economy–housing imbalance. This indicator can distinguish vitality variations between sleep periods and nighttime activity periods, which are highly related to the nighttime economy–housing imbalance. The spatial pattern of the nighttime economy–housing imbalance was explored, and its association with the built environment was investigated through city-scale geographical regression analysis in Shanghai, China. The results showed that the sub-districts of Shanghai with high-positive-imbalance intensities displayed structures with superimposed rings and striped shapes, and the sub-districts with negative imbalance intensities were distributed around high positive-intensity areas. There were significant linear correlations between imbalance intensity and the built environment. The multiple influences of built environment factors and related mechanisms were explored from a geographical perspective. Our study utilized the social sensing data to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the nighttime economy–housing imbalance. These findings will be useful for fostering the nighttime economy and supporting urban renewal.

Abstract Human activity follows an approximately 24-hour day-night cycle, but there is significant individual variation in awake and sleep times. Individuals with circadian rhythms at the extremes can be categorized into two chronotypes: “larks”, those who wake up and go to sleep early, and “owls”, those who stay up and wake up late. It is well established that a person’s chronotype can affect their activities and health. However, less is known about the effects of chronotypes on social behavior, even though many social interactions require coordinated timings. To study how chronotypes relate to social behavior, we use data collected with a smartphone app on a population of more than seven hundred volunteer students to simultaneously determine their chronotypes and social network structure. We find that owls maintain larger personal networks, albeit with less time spent per contact. On average, owls are more central in the social network of students than larks, frequently occupying the dense core of the network. These results point out that there is a strong connection between the chronotypes of people and the structure of social networks that they form.

During the COVID-19 crisis, the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) used aggregated and anonymous counting indicators based on network signaling data of three of the four mobile network operators (MNOs) in France to measure the distribution of population over the territory during and after the lockdown and to enrich the toolbox of high-frequency economic indicators used to follow the economic situation. INSEE’s strategy was to combine information coming from different MNOs together with the national population estimates it usually produces in order to get more reliable statistics and to measure uncertainty. This paper relates and situates this initiative within the long-term methodological collaborations between INSEE and different MNOs, and INSEE, Eurostat, and some other European national statistical institutes (NSIs). These collaborations aim at constructing experimental official statistics on the population present in a given place and at a given time, from mobile phone data (MPD). The COVID-19 initiative has confirmed that more methodological investments are needed to increase relevance of and trust in these data. We suggest this methodological work should be done in close collaboration between NSIs, MNOs, and research, to construct the most reliable statistical processes. This work requires exploiting raw data, so the research and statistical exemptions present in the general data protection regulation (GDPR) should be introduced as well in the new e-privacy regulation. We also raise the challenges of articulating commercial and public interest rationales and articulating transparency and commercial secrets requirements. Finally, it elaborates on the role NSIs can play in the MPD valorization ecosystem.

The line-planning problem seeks to determine the set of fixed routes (or lines) a transit operator should run, along with associated operation frequencies. We propose an optimization algorithm for the transit-line-planning problem based on bi-level programming that exploits the problem’s structure in conjunction with the range estimation of demands. The issue of conservativeness due to the range estimation is mitigated by adopting the robust optimization approach. The model was inspired by a real-world application that leverages big data available from telecommunications operators to estimate city-wide mobility patterns. Demand estimates from such sources are based on large sample sizes (often orders of magnitude larger than those used in survey-based approaches), and capture day-to-day variability in travel demand as ranges. The validity of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by using real-world data derived from 2.5 billion call data records from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Recent years have witnessed an increasing use of big data in mobility research. Such efforts have led to many insights on the travel behavior and activity patterns of people. Despite these achievements, the data veracity issue and its impact on the processes of knowledge discovery have seldom been discussed. In this research, we investigate the veracity issue of mobile signaling data (MSD) when they are used to characterize human mobility patterns. We first discuss the location uncertainty issues in MSD that would hinder accurate estimations of human mobility patterns, followed by an examination of two existing methods for addressing these issues (clustering-based method and time window–based method). We then propose a new approach that can overcome some of the limitations of these two methods. By applying all three methods to a large-scale mobile signaling data set, we find that the choice of preprocessing methods could lead to changes in the data characteristics. Such changes, which are nontrivial, will further affect the characterization and interpretation of human mobility patterns. By computing four mobility indicators (number of origin–destination trips, number of activity locations, total stay time, and activity entropy) from the outputs of the three methods, we illustrate their varying impacts on individual mobility estimations relevant to location uncertainty issues. Our analysis results call for more attention to the veracity issue in data-driven mobility research and its implications for replicability and reproducibility of geospatial research. Understanding population distribution has excellent applications for planning and provision of municipal services. This study aims to explore the space-time structure of population distribution with area-level mobile phone data. We discuss a kind of Bayesian hierarchical models, fitted by Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation, that combines the overall spatial pattern and temporal trends as well as the departures from these stable components. We carry out an empirical study in Shenzhen, China, using the area-level mobile phone users in 24 hours. The results indicate that the estimation of the overall spatial pattern is not deteriorated when using a sophisticated spatio-temporal model. The temporal trend exhibits a reasonable fluctuation during the study period. Then we apply two rules to detect areas showing unstable trends of population fluctuation based on the posterior probabilities of the space-time interactions. We also include the population statistics and indices for mixed-use to explore the spatial pattern of population fluctuation. Our findings confirm that the Bayesian spatio-temporal model can enhance the understanding of the space-time variability of population distribution using mobile phone data. In this paper, we describe the software implementation of the methodological framework designed to incorporate mobile phone data into the current production chain of official statistics during the ESSnet Big Data II project. We present an overview of the architecture of the software stack, its components, the interfaces between them, and show how they can be used. Our software implementation consists in four R packages: destim for estimation of the spatial distribution of the mobile devices, deduplication for classification of the devices as being in 1:1 or 2:1 correspondence with its owner, aggregation for estimation of the number of individuals detected by the network starting from the geolocation probabilities and the duplicity probabilities and inference which combines the number of individuals provided by the previous package with other information like the population counts from an official register and the mobile operator penetration rates to provide an estimation of the target population counts. Digital location traces are a relevant source of insights into how citizens experience their cities. Previous works using call detail records (CDRs) tend to focus on modeling the spatial and temporal patterns of human mobility, not paying much attention to the semantics of places, thus failing to model and enhance the understanding of the motivations behind people’s mobility. In this paper, we applied a methodology for identifying individual users’ routine locations and propose an approach for attaching semantic meaning to these locations. Specifically, we used circular sectors that correspond to cellular antennas’ signal areas. In those areas, we found that all contained points of interest (POIs), extracted their most important attributes (opening hours, check-ins, category) and incorporated them into the classification. We conducted experiments with real-world data from Coimbra, Portugal, and the initial experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to infer activities in the user’s routine areas.

In this study, call detail records (CDR), covering Budapest, Hungary, are processed to analyze the circadian rhythm of the subscribers. An indicator, called wake-up time, is introduced to describe the behavior of a group of subscribers. It is defined as the time when the mobile phone activity of a group rises in the morning. Its counterpart is the time when the activity falls in the evening. Inhabitant and area-based aggregation are also presented. The former is to consider the people who live in an area, while the latter uses the transit activity in an area to describe the behavior of a part of the city. The opening hours of the malls and the nightlife of the party district are used to demonstrate this application as real-life examples. The proposed approach is also used to estimate the working hours of the workplaces. The findings are in a good agreement with the practice in Hungary, and also support the workplace detection method. A negative correlation is found between the wake-up time and mobility indicators (entropy, radius of gyration): on workdays, people wake up earlier and travel more, while on holidays, it is quite the contrary. The wake-up time is evaluated in different socioeconomic classes, using housing prices and mobile phones prices, as well. It is found that lower socioeconomic groups tend to wake up earlier.

This comprehensive approach allows for a detailed representation of Brno's mobility landscape. By employing clustering techniques, we aimed to identify distinct mobility patterns within the city., Results: Our analysis revealed consistent structural features within Brno's mobility patterns. We identified three distinct clusters: a central business district, residential communities, and an intermediate hybrid cluster. Neighborhood vitality denotes the presence of people and space for human activities and is critical for creating sustainable cities. However, there is limited understanding of its association with multidimensional aspects of the human and built environment. Using the de facto population, established through mobile signal data, as an indicator of neighborhood vitality in Seoul, South Korea, this study empirically tests the uneven effects of the human and built environment and its latent factors on neighborhood vitality. The multidimensional human and built environment models confirmed that higher population and employment density and neighborhoods with higher land value are associated with neighborhood vitality on working days and weekends, while higher land-use mix and balance and dense neighborhoods remarkably contribute to the higher presence of inhabitants on weekends. The latent factor models revealed that (1) centralized neighborhoods with concentrated employment and high land values determine higher neighborhood vitality; and (2) land-use mix positively explained the variations in neighborhood vitality only during working hours. Mobile phone data are an interesting new data source for official statistics. However, multiple problems and uncertainties need to be solved before these data can inform, support or even become an integral part of statistical production processes. In this article, we focus on arguably the most important problem hindering the application of mobile phone data in official statistics: detecting home locations. We argue that current efforts to detect home locations suffer from a blind deployment of criteria to define a place of residence and from limited validation possibilities. We support our argument by analysing the performance of five home detection algorithms (HDAs) that have been applied to a large, French, Call Detailed Record (CDR) data set (~,18 million users, five months). Our results show that criteria choice in HDAs influences the detection of home locations for up to about 40% of users, that HDAs perform poorly when compared with a validation data set (resulting in 358-gap), and that their performance is sensitive to the time period and the duration of observation. Based on our findings and experiences, we offer several recommendations for official statistics. Emergency management (EM) has always been a concern of people from all walks of life due to the devastating impacts emergencies can have. The global outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 has pushed EM to the top topic. As mobile phones have become ubiquitous, many scholars have shown interest in using mobile phone data for EM. This paper presents a systematic literature review about the use of mobile phone data for EM that includes 65 related articles written between 2014 and 2019 from six electronic databases. Five themes in using mobile phone data for EM emerged from the reviewed articles, and a systematic framework is proposed to illustrate the current state of the research. The spatial heterogeneity of land use patterns and residents' corresponding economic activities give rise to urban mobility's latent structure, which is of great importance for urban planning and transport infrastructure investment but cannot be readily captured using conventional data sources. We developed a methodological framework for detecting urban mobility structure at the transportation analysis zone (TAZ) level in Beijing using mobile phone signal data. First, we derived origin–destination data at the TAZ level from mobile phone data and visualized them in ArcGIS. Next, we improved community detecting algorithms generally used in social networks by reversing distance weight, such as by dividing ODs by 1, and used the results to reveal hidden clustering features of TAZs, according ODs between them. We visualized and analyzed population density, OD spatial distribution at different times, and ratio of daytime to nighttime population using the GIS platform; all showed some spatial cluster features. We then applied a structure detection algorithm using ODs between TAZ pairs to identify the hidden structure of urban mobility extracted from phone data. For Beijing, the identified mobility structure contains 27 clusters, with those in suburban areas tending to match administrative boundaries well but those in the developed center areas showing complex distributions and matching administrative boundaries poorly. Authorities that provide mobility infrastructure can use the resulting insights into urban planning and transportation planning to inform policy decisions at the local and city levels. Abstract Social capital has been studied in economics, sociology and political science as one of the key elements that promote the development of modern societies. It can be defined as the source of capital that facilitates cooperation through shared social norms. In this work, we investigate whether and to what extent synchronization aspects of mobile communication patterns are associated with social capital metrics. Interestingly, our results show that our synchronization-based approach well correlates with existing social capital metrics (i.e., Referendum turnout, Blood donations, and Association density), being also able to characterize the different role played by high synchronization within a close proximity-based community and high synchronization among different communities. Hence, the proposed approach can provide timely, effective analysis at a limited cost over a large territory.

Abstract Background Human mobility is fundamental to understanding global issues in the health and social sciences such as disease spread and displacements from disasters and conflicts. Detailed mobility data across spatial and temporal scales are difficult to collect, however, with movements varying from short, repeated movements to work or school, to rare migratory movements across national borders. While typical sources of mobility data such as travel history surveys and GPS tracker data can inform different typologies of movement, almost no source of readily obtainable data can address all types of movement at once. Methods Here, we collect Google Location History (GLH) data and examine it as a novel source of information that could link fine scale mobility with rare, long distance and international trips, as it uniquely spans large temporal scales with high spatial granularity. These data are passively collected by Android smartphones, which reach increasingly broad audiences, becoming the most common operating system for accessing the Internet worldwide in 2017. We validate GLH data against GPS tracker data collected from Android users in the United Kingdom to assess the feasibility of using GLH data to inform human movement. Results We find that GLH data span very long temporal periods (over a year on average in our sample), are spatially equivalent to GPS tracker data within 100 m, and capture more international movement than survey data. We also find GLH data avoid compliance concerns seen with GPS trackers and bias in self-reported travel, as GLH is passively collected. We discuss some settings where GLH data could provide novel insights, including infrastructure planning, infectious disease control, and response to catastrophic events, and discuss advantages and disadvantages of using GLH data to inform human mobility patterns. Conclusions GLH data are a greatly underutilized and novel dataset for understanding human movement. While biases exist in populations with GLH data, Android phones are becoming the first and only device purchased to access the Internet and various web services in many middle and lower income settings, making these data increasingly appropriate for a wide range of scientific questions.

Abstract Epidemic outbreaks are an important healthcare challenge, especially in developing countries where they represent one of the major causes of mortality. Approaches that can rapidly target subpopulations for surveillance and control are critical for enhancing containment and mitigation processes during epidemics. Using a real-world dataset from Ivory Coast, this work presents an attempt to unveil the socio-geographical heterogeneity of disease transmission dynamics. By employing a spatially explicit meta-population epidemic model derived from mobile phone Call Detail Records (CDRs), we investigate how the differences in mobility patterns may affect the course of a hypothetical infectious disease outbreak. We consider different existing measures of the spatial dimension of human mobility and interactions, and we analyse their relevance in identifying the highest risk sub-population of individuals, as the best candidates for isolation countermeasures. The approaches presented in this paper provide further evidence that mobile phone data can be effectively exploited to facilitate our understanding of individuals’ spatial behaviour and its relationship with the risk of infectious diseases’ contagion. In particular, we show that CDRs-based indicators of individuals’ spatial activities and interactions hold promise for gaining insight of contagion heterogeneity and thus for developing mitigation strategies to support decision-making during country-level epidemics.

The main objective of this paper is to apply a synthetic approach to the delimitation of metropolitan areas, which combines traditional commuting data from the population census with alternative approaches. The presented delimitation, which was originally realized in response to a request from Prague’s planning authority, is based on three methodological pillars: the use of economic and social aspects of metropolization; suburbanization; and daily mobility within the Prague Metropolitan Area. Integrated systems of centers calculated from population census data are complemented with the use of mobile phone data. There was a surprising level of similarity in the spatial patterns gained from the two methods. Zones of residential suburbanization and time spent in the core city provided a complex perspective on the daily urban system within the Prague Metropolitan Area. A synthetic map based on the four methods is provided, accompanied by five analytical maps on a smaller scale.
