Life changes as an unavoidable element of life may create rather drastic challenges. The approach towards retirement may cause stress and uncertainty for some people, as well as the realisation that necessary changes need to occur. This study focuses on research regarding the life transition to retirement and the challenges each person faces during this phase of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions that retired people had of their life in retirement, with the purpose of formulating guidelines for the development and implementation of a coaching model for retirement. For the purpose of this study, the following four tasks of practical theological interpretation, as explained by Osmer, were followed: *Descriptive-empirical task – “What is going on?” *Interpretative task – “Why is this happening?” *Normative task – “What ought to be happening?” *Pragmatic task – “How might we respond?” An empirical qualitative study was done with retired people by way of focus groups. What transpired was that the reality of a longer life expectancy, the continuation of an active lifestyle and the turbulent economic climate could all have an influence on the quality of retirement. The results from the empirical study suggested that it is essential to follow a holistic approach in the preparation, planning and adaptation process regarding retirement. From the interpretative task regarding life coaching, it transpired that coaching is one of the fastest growing disciplines with worldwide recognition. Life coaching is being used as a method to facilitate purpose-driven change on personal, spiritual and professional levels. From the interpretative task regarding retirement it was established that retirement is a concept that is undergoing vast changes, while various perceptions regarding retirement are being upheld. On account of the longer life expectancy that is currently observed, retirement is nowadays being perceived more as a transition from full-time employment to a lesser work-orientated existence. The normative task focused on the aspects of life coaching by showing examples of prominent leaders in the Bible and how their behaviour can possibly enrich and form the life of the life coach, and can be applied as an example to imitate. Although no logical concept for retirement is detailed in the Bible, the elderly are highly regarded and they can live with an unfailing, hopeful future expectation of eternal life and the second coming of Jesus Christ. The conclusion of the study is that, through good planning and preparation for the life phase of retirement, retirement coaching can be instrumental in a more positive attitude towards retirement and good emotional, intellectual, spiritual, physical, social and financial adjustment in retirement. This paper presents a case study conducted as part of a PhD Thesis on testing Life Coaching as a learning method for fostering emancipation in vulnerable groups (adult patients), using a participatory-action-research approach. The lessons learnt provides empirical insights on the implications for the implementation of non-medical methods that could allow a shift from a situation of passivity (patient care) to a new one of participation to the definition of new objectives or projects of life (active citizenship). This paper was conceived to fulfil an identified need to study and test innovative and non-medical methods for fostering adult patients’ self-determination.

According to the 2010 UNAIDS Report, an estimated 320 000 (or 20%) fewer people died of AIDS-related causes in 2009 when compared to figures in 2004 in sub-Saharan Africa, when antiretroviral therapy was markedly expanded (UNAIDS, 2010). This decreased mortality rate offers hope for HIV-infected people to plan a future, part of which will include dating and sexual relationships. The Report cites KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa as being at the heart of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; this article is based on research on dating and sexuality among HIV-positive people in KwaZulu-Natal. Dating and sexuality are an integral part of living. Yet HIV-positive persons are denied intimacy at a time when this is most needed (Kasiram in Kasiram, Partab & Dano, 2006). Little is known about the full range of sexual adaptations that HIV-infected individuals choose (Schiltz & Sandfort, 2000). Kasiram, Partab, Dano and Van Greunen (2003:9) cite interaction and intimacy among HIV-positive persons as a neglected research focus, while Painter (2001) adds that insufficient attention is afforded to couple relationships for infected people. An important reason that motivated this study on dating and sexual challenges faced by HIV-positive people was the first author’s (the main researcher’s) personal experience of being HIV positive and counselling and life coaching HIV-positive people. This study assessed the impact of life coaching on physical activity participation, self-efficacy, social support, and perceived behavioural control among physically inactive youth between the ages of 12 and 14 years in London, Ontario. The multiple-baseline across participants single case-experimental design study consisted of five 12 to 14 year olds. Six coaching sessions were conducted over two months by a certified professional Co-active coach. Physical activity increased for one participant while the other participants’ physical activity remained unchanged. No significant changes occurred in self-efficacy, social support, and perceived behavioural control with specific regard to becoming more physically active. Results indicted no consistent intervention effects for physical activity. Furthermore, coaching may not be appealing to youth of this age group given the difficulties experienced obtaining the necessary number of participants and the low levels of participant commitment throughout the study.

Fragilizado ao assumir riscos e ter que lidar com a instabilidade e a insegurança consequentes da busca por sua liberdade na sociedade líquido moderna e em contexto de trabalho imaterial, o indivíduo é exposto a inúmeras promessas de ferramentas de rápida solução, serviços, métodos e técnicas de desenvolvimento pessoal que prometem maior controle sobre as experiências de vida. A presente dissertação busca analisar como dilemas pessoais vivenciados em contexto de trabalho imaterial na sociedade líquido moderna são apresentados e trabalhados na perspectiva do life coaching. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório que contou com a participação de cinco profissionais que prestam o serviço de life coaching. A coleta de dados se deu através de entrevistas individuais semi-estruturadas. Para a análise dos dados foi utilizada a análise de conteúdo. A análise dos resultados foi realizada de maneira qualitativa e se deu á luz do referencial teórico sobre a sociedade líquido moderna, o trabalho imaterial, o coaching e o life coaching. Os resultados da pesquisa permitiram indicar o life coaching como serviço que busca corresponder à demanda por desenvolvimento pessoal no alcance de adaptação a mudanças, excelência em todos os domínios da vida e no ímpeto por autorrealização pessoal, características da vida líquida, através do uso de ferramentas gerencialistas originalmente empregadas para o desenvolvimento empresarial. Alinhado com a ideia de que todos devem estar em estado permanente de vigilância e de gestão de si, e mergulhado no movimento mercadológico de autoajuda e de desenvolvimento pessoal patrocinado por uma ideologia produtivista e capitalista, o life coaching mostrou-se como clara expressão da noção de produção de subjetividade, contexto característico do mundo sob hegemonia do trabalho imaterial. A oferta do serviço de life coaching se mostrou, ainda, de estruturação inconsistente. A falta de consenso apontada sobre o conhecimento de base que alicerça o coaching e a falta de regulamentação quanto à formação e premissas para atuação profissional nesta área são elementos que justificam o questionamento com relação à adequação da capacitação dos life coaches para o tratamento de dilemas pessoais em contexto de trabalho imaterial na sociedade líquido moderna. The personal search for liberty in liquid-modern society and immaterial work context, and the consequent need to take risks and to deal with an instable and insecure environment can make one vulnerable as exposed to a countless number of tools, services, methods and techniques for personal development wich promises fast results and increased controle over life experiences. The present dissertation searches to analyse how personal dilemmas experimented in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society are presentated and worked in the perspective of life coaching. The present study is characterized as an exploratory study and counted with the participation of five professionals who offer life coaching services. The data was collected through individual semi-structered interviews. To analyse the data the content analysis was used. The analysis of the results was developed in a qualitative way from theorical references about liquid-modern society, immaterial work, coaching and life coaching. The results of the research indicates life coaching as a sevice that utilizes management tools originaly aplicated in business devolopement, and a service that corresponds to a demand for personal development in the search for adaptation over changing situations, for excellence in all of life´s domains, and in the search for personal realization, all caracteristics of liquid life. Aligned with the idea that all should be in permanent state of awareness and self management, and deeply merged in the self-help and personal development market sponsored by productivist and capitalist ideology, life coaching is presented as a clear expression of the subjective production notion that is characteristic of a world in predominance of immaterial work. The life coaching has yet been presented as an inconsistent service in terms of it´s strucuture. In Brazil, the lack of consense pointed out over its knowledge base, the lack of regulation over the life coaching formation and the inexistence of premises for life coaching professional performance are elements that justify questioning how appropriate and adequate are life coaches´ capacitation to work out personal dilemmas in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the impact of Co-active life coaching on obese female university students. Five obese (BMI ≥ 30kg/m2), female university students received an average of nine weekly, 35-minute, one-on-one sessions with a certified coach. Semi- structured, in-depth interviews before and after participating in the coaching intervention were conducted, and inductive content analysis was utilized. Strategies to enhance data trustworthiness were incorporated throughout. Participants initially reported: struggling with barriers and experiencing pressure from family to lose weight; negative relationships with themselves; feeling self-conscious and remorse for their size and lifestyle choices. At the conclusion of the study period, participants attributed enhanced self-acceptance; living healthier lifestyles; and making themselves a priority to their coaching experience. They appreciated being treated as the expert in their lives. Life coaching has potential as a method for supporting obese individuals in improving their relationships with themselves, and may serve as a catalyst in facilitating weight-loss.

The escalating success of personal coaching and the significant potential it holds as a vehicle for effective learning, appear to have had little impact within educational contexts to date. In response, this paper therefore presents an introduction to personal coaching practice and its outcomes and examines its processes through a discussion of learning theory. In doing so, it demonstrates the learning value inherent within the coaching framework and challenges educators to consider its potential as a model for active, collaborative, authentic and engaging learning.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the impact of Motivational Interviewing (MI) using Co-Active Life Coaching skills as a treatment for adults (age, 35–55 years) struggling with obesity. Eight women (BMI≥30) who reside in London, Ontario, received 18 coaching sessions over six months with a Certified Professional Co-Active (CPCC) coach. Participants engaged in semi-structured pre- and post-interviews, along with a focus group six months after the last coaching session. The study's CPCC was also interviewed post-intervention to gain an understanding of what it was like coaching this population. All interviews were analysed using inductive content analysis. Following the intervention participants credited increased self-confidence; learning to cope with life in a healthy manner; putting self first; increased emotional healing; the importance of social networks in weight loss; and learning to step outside their comfort zone to the coaching intervention. During the focus group, the following themes emerged: weight was a symptom; increased self-care; life coaching and weight loss as a journey; support required as a motivator; and importance of the coach/client relationship. The study's CPCC provided insight into the styles and skills most often used from the Co-Active method as well as suggestions for future coaches working with this population. MI using CALC is an effective intervention in supporting individuals in dealing with life factors that may impede weight loss.

Mål: At undersøge hvorvidt fire coachingpsykologiske sessioner kunne reducere stress, angst og depressions niveau, samt forøge velvære hos 1.semesters studerende. At belyse hvilken betydning coaching får for de studerende. Design: Mixed method design med før- og eftertest, samt kontrolgruppe, (N=52). Kvalitative interviews med fire deltagere før og efter coaching interventionen. Metode: Ni erfarne coaches gennemførte fire sessioner med 52 første semesters studerende fra Aalborg universitet. Deltagerne udfyldte DASS-21, Subjective Wellbeing Scale og Adult Hope Scale før og efter coaching interventionerne. De kvalitative interviews blev analyseret med Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Resultater: En markant lavere stigning i depressionsniveau (DASS-21) hos coaching gruppen. Angstniveauet faldt i begge grupper, men et større fald i coachinggruppen end i ventelistegruppen. Håb-niveauet steg i coachinggruppen, men faldt i ventelistegruppen. Konklusioner: Fire korte coaching interventioner af 45 minutters varighed mindskede angstniveauet hos interventionsgruppen, som også havde et lavere niveau af depression samt en øget fornemmelse af handlekraft og målorientering. Ydermere oplevede deltagerne i interventionsgruppen en forøget indsigt i rollen som universitetsstuderende og øget refleksivitet. Blandt andet omtales den bevidste brug af alternative tanker, som en frugtbar måde at håndtere studiets udfordringer på.

While executive life coaching is quite prominent in the research forum as outlined in Grant’s workplace and executive life coaching annotated bibliography (2005), studies pertaining to life coaching-related health outcomes are fewer in number and they have not been well recognized. Furthermore, although health-related studies focusing on life coaching as one form of health-related treatment have been conducted for some time, neither a summary nor an appraisal of the methodological soundness of these studies have been conducted. Therefore, the two-fold purpose of this annotated bibliography is: 1) to present a summary of critically appraised life coaching studies related to health research; and 2) stemming from that summary, to outline possible avenues for future health-related coaching research.

This study evaluates the impact of one-on-one coaching on the waist circumference, BMI, self-esteem, self-efficacy, physical activity, and functional health status of adults with obesity. A one-group within- subjects, pre-test post-test study design was used. The study took place at the University of Western Ontario from June-October 2007. A total of 20 men and women aged 35-55, with a BMI ≥ 30 participated in the study. Each engaged in six to eight 35-minute sessions with a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach during which they explored desired changes and how to achieve them. Paired t-tests were used to analyse the pre- and post-quantitative data and inductive content analysis was used to assess the qualitative interviews. Significant decreases in waist circumference and increases in self-esteem and functional health status were found. Qualitatively, participants reported an increase in daily physical activity and healthier dietary choices, feelings of optimism, and greater self-acceptance. Thus life coaching shows promise as an obesity intervention, although more research is needed.

Bu araştırma yaşam koçluğu eğitiminin kişinin problem çözme ve stresle başa çıkma becerileri üzerindeki etkisini ölçen bir çalışmadır. Araştırmanın temel amacı, Yaşam Koçluğu tekniğinin gelişim üzerine etkinliğini ölçmektir. Yaşam Koçluğu tekniği problem yerine, çözme yollarına odaklanan sistematik bir yaklaşımdır. Yaşam Koçluğu, kişinin her problemin çözümünü üretebilme yeteneğini kazanma varsayımına dayanan bir yaklaşımdır. Yaşam Koçluğunun, sorunların kısa sürede çözülmesinde etkin olması, kişileri hedeflerine götürmeyi sağlaması, kişinin başarma gücüne odaklanması, bu yaklaşımın önemini arttırmaktadır. Bu amaca yönelik olarak Yaşam Koçluğu eğitimi uygulamasının, bu eğitimi alan kişilerde problem çözme ve stresle başa çıkma becerilerine olumlu etkisinin olacağı hipotezi test edilmiştir. Bu araştırmada kişilere Yaşam Koçluğu eğitimi verilerek, problem çözme becerileri ve stresle başa çıkma becerilerinde pozitif anlamda bir gelişmenin ortaya konulması hedeflenmektedir. Eşleştirme tekniği kullanılarak, deney ve kontrol grubunu 26-45 yaş aralığındaki 40' ar kişiden oluşan kadınlar ve erkekler oluşturmaktadır. Veriler iki gruba da kişisel anket formu , Problem Çözme Yetenek Ölçeği ve Rosenbaum' un öğrenilmiş Güçlülük Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Ölçekler, çalışma grubuna yüz sekiz saat süren bir eğitimin başında ve dört ay sonra eğitimin sonunda, kontrol grubuna ise dört ay ara ile uygulanmıştır. Yaşam Koçluğu eğitimi uygulamasından sonra verilerin değerlendirilmesinde istatistiksel metodların yanı sıra niceliksel verilerin karşılaştırılmasında normal dağılım gösteren parametrelerin gruplar arası karşılaştırmalarında student testi; grup içi karşılaştırmalarında paired sample t testi kullanılmıştır. It shall be the very objective of this research, to exhibit a valuable development in problem solving and stress handling skills of persons who have been exposed to Life Coaching education. Using matching tecniques, experiment and control groups are made out of 40 persons each with male and female members in age range between 26 to 40. Data collected with the help of Personal Questionnaires, Problem Solving, Aptitude Scale and Stress Handling Scale. Scale are being apllied to experiment group at the beginning of a 108h education and again after a 4 months education, but with 4 months intervals to control group. After Life Coaching education, beside the statistical methods for the assessment of data, student test is used for the purpose of intergroup comparison of normally distributing parameters and paired sample t test for in-group comparison. For non-normal distribution of parameters, through intergroup comparison the Mann Whitney U test and through in-group comparison the Wilcoxon test is used. For the comparison of qualitative data Ki-Kare test is used. In case of co-relation of parameters, Pearson co-relation analysis is used for evaluation. In the light of the survey results; positive progress was recorded about the problem solving skills of the individuals at the end of the educational session. No differentiation in the ability to cope with stress was recorded.

Despite modern advances in clinical psychopharmacology, mental disorders are still the leading cause of disability all over the world. Drug treatment of mental disorders is unfortunately too often associated with partial remissions, frequent relapse or recurrence as well as with persistent residual symptoms, distress and low levels of well-being, life-satisfaction and quality of life. The practical failure of psychopharmacotherapy to improve life-satisfaction and well-being is related to treatment focus on psychopathology and decrease of illness and not on the development of wellness, purpose of life and creativity. NLP, life coaching and well-being therapy may significantly increase effectiveness of psychopharmacotherapy shaping an efficient and meaningful treatment context for achieving a full recovery.

This chapter explains life coaching for adult Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The field of personal and professional coaching is gaining recognition as a way to help individuals become more purposeful and proactive. Coaching is about developing a partnership that motivates the client to move forward in a deliberate and structured manner. Coaching for people with ADHD is becoming a powerful tool in the arsenal of ADHD treatment. It is about developing a partnership that motivates the client to move forward in a deliberate and structured manner. A large part of the client's motivation stems from the fact that it is the responsibility to forge a partnership with the coach. People with ADHD see a number of professionals focusing on a particular area of difficulty of the client. However, the coach focuses on the “what, how, and when.” What are they having difficulty with in their daily lives.

The demand on techniques, approaches and processes that have a positive impact on courage, fear and anxiety is very high in general population. The evidence-based and theoretical literature supporting life coaching as a successful approach building individual courage and helping with fear and anxiety is scarce. This integrative literature review synthesises data from previous research studies about the impact of life coaching as an intervention to enhance courage and decrease fear and anxiety. Findings obtained in this study suggest that life coaching is a reliable approach that may enhance individual courage and decrease fear and anxiety.

Life coaching as an industry fully emerged in the 1990s and has exploded to become a $2 billion global industry with nearly 50,000 certified life coaches (ICF, 2012). With the rapid growth and many different programmes and educational platforms, there is a need for defining the exact scope of what life coaching entails (Segers, Vloeberghs, Henderickx and Inceoglu, 2011). The purpose of this study was to conduct an integrative review of the evidence-based life coaching literature in order to develop a comprehensive objective characterisation of coaching that would capture the nature of the industry in the most concise manner and hopefully provide the objectives for establishing life coaching as a profession.
