Objectives: Cysts seen in the jaws may be odontogenic or non-odontogenic, depending on the tissue of origin. Although there are different methods to diagnose these lesions, histopathological examination of tissue biopsy of the lesion is accepted as the 'gold standard' in cases where the diagnosis is insufficient. Materials and Methods: Pathology results of 436 patients who applied to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic between 2016-2021 for any reason and underwent biopsy were retrospectively scanned using digital archives. While classifying the cyst, the criteria published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017 were taken into account. Obtained results were recorded for statistical analysis. SPSS 22.0 Software Package Program (SPSS 22.0 Software Package Program, Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) was used as statistical software in the study. Results: Of the 436 patients included in the study, 250 (57.3%) were male and 186 (42.7%) were female. The ages of the patients ranged between 7 and 82 years, and the mean age of the patients was 35.5±15.8. As a result of the findings, it was determined that the most common cysts were radicular cysts (53.7%). Radicular cysts were most commonly located in the posterior mandible and anterior maxilla anatomically. Conclusions: In addition to clinical and radiological examination, histopathological examination of biopsy samples taken from tissues is of great importance in the correct diagnosis and treatment planning of jaw cysts.

Muscle lesions are among the most common injuries encountered in performance sports. Despite their high incidence, their diagnosis, classification, and treatment are constantly being debated. Most of the time, the severity of the injury indicates the recovery strategy (conservative, physical therapy, surgical, etc). Currently, due to advances in medical, pharmacological, and physical therapy, the treatment of muscle injuries can be greatly improved. Incomplete or incorrect recovery from a muscle injury can have a series of negative effects (financial or sports performance), which can affect the long-term career of athletes. Considering the incidence and costs that an injury can generate, in this paper, we set out to identify and present the latest approaches, used by specialists in the field, to facilitate the fastest recovery of athletes.

Background. Cereal ergot caused by the fungus Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul. is a progressive disease of winter rye. There are no rye cultivars resistant to the disease, and breeding methods of protection have not been developed in Russia.Materials and methods. The material for the research included 97 winter rye cultivars. A biochemical analysis of the sclerotia of the fungus was carried out, the composition and content of ergot alkaloids (EA) in the sclerotia of C. purpurea from the Kirov population were studied, and the relationship between the biometry of sclerotia and the EA content, toxicity and pathogenicity of C. purpurea was analyzed. Well-known methods of resistance assessment and EA analysis were applied.Results and conclusions. Fourteen cultivars least affected by the pathogen were identified: ‘Flora’, ‘Kiprez’, ‘Grafinya’, ‘Lika’, ‘Batist’, ‘Simfoniya’, ‘Garmoniya’, ‘Sadko’, ‘Parom’, ‘Virazh’, ‘Saratovskaya 7’, ‘Volkhova’, ‘Novaya Era’, and ‘Podarok’. They can be used in breeding for ergot resistance. Three types of EA were identified in C. purpurea sclerotia: ergocristine, ergotamine, and its stereoisomer ergocristinine. Cvs. ‘Lika’, ‘Simfoniya’ and ‘Garmoniya’ were the least affected by ergot, and the sclerotia formed on the plants of these cultivars did not accumulate EA. A significant (r = 0.50–0.60) correlation was found between lesions and biometric parameters of C. purpurea sclerotia, and between grain contamination with sclerotia and their biometrics (r = 0.63– 0.78). A weak positive correlation (r = 0.22) was detected between the toxicity and pathogenicity of C. purpurea. A negative correlation was established between the weight of sclerotia and the accumulation of EA in them (r = –0.46), which indicated the biological danger of small sclerotia that got into the seed and food batches of grain.

En este artículo, se aborda el tema de la inteligencia artificial (IA) aplicada a la detección y gestión de heridas en el campo de la medicina. Se revisan cinco estudios científicos que exploran el uso de IA en diversas áreas de la medicina relacionadas con heridas. El objetivo principal es analizar los avances, limitaciones y perspectivas de la IA en la educación médica para el manejo de heridas, considerando la IA como una herramienta potencialmente valiosa en el abordaje especifico de diferentes tipos de heridas.

Background: Resin infiltration is a micro-invasive treatment for molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). In this study it was aimed to evaluate the masking effect of resin infiltration treatment (ICON) on hypomineralised enamel surface of permanent anterior teeth by using laser fluorescence, spectrophotometer, and cross-polarisation photography. Methods: A total of 116 permanent central incisors in 37 patients were included in the study. The resin infiltration treatment (Icon®) was applied to the teeth with MIH; the healthy teeth received no treatment (control). Hypomineralised enamel lesions were evaluated by ICDAS II criteria. DIAGNOdent Pen was used to assess the lesions and healthy enamel surface quantitatively. Colour changes in enamel lesions were evaluated by using a spectrophotometer (VITA EasyShare). Each enamel lesion was imaged using a cross-polarization technique before and after treatment. All photos were assessed using Image J to evaluate the changes in lesion size. Enamel lesions were evaluated before; immediately after; 1; 3; and 6 months after treatment. Statistical significance was set as p < 0.05. Results: After the resin infiltration, significant decreases were found in the mean DIAGNOdent values for the treatment group (p < 0.05). The colour differences before and after treatment significantly differed in all follow-ups (p < 0.05). In the treatment group, lesion areas decreased significantly after treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The resin infiltration treatment has a masking effect on MIH lesions without cavities, with stable outcomes after six months. The cross-polarization photography technique may be use to evaluate the lesion size instead of photography with flash. Trial registration. NCT04685889 (registered 28 December 2020). Purpose: This study aims to analyze the return to normal activities and sports after surgical management of peroneal tendon dislocation through different surgical techniques. Methods: This review included studies (retrospective case series, prospective cohort study) that analyzed different aspects: return to sport (RTS), American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), satisfaction, and redislocation episodes after surgical treatment. We performed a systematic review, analyzing 1699 articles. We researched our selected studies through PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane. The last search was performed in December 2022. We used the MINORS score to perform a quality assessment of pooled data. In total, 20 studies were included. Results: The postoperative AOFAS score, VAS scale, and high satisfaction percentages all improve with surgical therapy. At long-term follow-up, the redislocation following surgical treatment is minimal. Compared to patients who only receive superior peroneal retinaculum (SPR) repair and other surgical procedures, patients with groove deepening and SPR repair have greater rates of returning to sports (bony and rerouting procedures). Conclusions: Peroneal tendon dislocation surgery offers good outcomes, a quick return to sport, and high patient satisfaction. Myofibromas are rare benign lesions and are often found as solitary entities. The treatment of the lesion is complete excision and the recurrence is rare. A 56-year-old female presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic for further evaluation and management of a solitary lesion of the right body of the mandible that was first noticed incidentally by her referring dentist. An incisional biopsy was first performed in the clinic with the diagnosis of myofibroma. The patient was then treated with complete excision of the lesion and extraction of the adjacent teeth. The final biopsy report confirmed the initial diagnosis of myofibroma. Intraosseous solitary lesion of the mandible is a rare lesion with a handful of reported cases. Uniquely, the diagnosis of myofibroma in this 56-year-old is the oldest reported case of myofibroma. Management of Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) disease in Brassica napus is heavily reliant on prophylactic fungicide applications at flowering, which often provides inconsistent control depending on timing of ascospore release in the field and environmental conditions. Understanding host response to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection is essential for sustainable disease management in the future. This study determined host response of nine B. napus varieties to four aggressive S. sclerotiorum isolates across two years by measuring four disease variables: area under the disease progress stairs (AUDPS), seed production, sclerotia number and average sclerotia weight. Brassica napus varieties varied greatly in their response to the four measured variables, with varieties producing the highest AUDPS not being the same varieties that had the lowest seed production, the highest numbers of sclerotia or heaviest sclerotia. Repeating the experiment over two years using the same varieties and isolates identified the impact of environment on measured disease variables as the most influential factor, highlighting the complexity of disease responses to diverse isolates and host genotypes under different environments. It was recommended that both long-term (such as inoculum production) and short-term (such as seed production) disease outcomes be combined with lesion length measurement (i.e., AUDPS) for future host screening studies. Background: The clavicle poses a diagnostic dilemma of the pathological lesions due to the wide range of pathologies seen at this site. This study aimed to identify and stratify various pathologies seen in the clavicle and to guide ways of investigation for diagnosis based on age, site and investigation findings. Materials and methods: Four hundred and ten cases with clavicle lesions were identified in our database. Data were collected about the patient's medical history, previous investigation, inflammatory markers radiological investigations and biopsy. All patients were worked up and managed after discussion in a multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT). Results: Non-malignant lesions accounted for 79% of cases. Infection was the most common diagnosis (39%) and the commonest diagnosis in those less than 20 years of age. 73% of the lesions were found at the medial end of the clavicle. Malignant tumours were 21%, while primary benign bone tumours accounted for only 14%. 50% of the malignant lesions were due to metastatic disease. The risk of malignancy increases with advancing age. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were not sensitive as a diagnostic tool in cases of osteomyelitis confirmed by histology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was noted to have high sensitivity and specificity for identifying the nature of a lesion and diagnosis. Conclusion: We have identified age as a positive predictor of a malignant cause in pathological lesions of the clavicle. MRI should be considered in all these cases. CRP and ESR have poor predictive values in diagnosing infection in the clavicle. Patients presenting with clavicle lesions should be discussed in a specialist MDT and undergo a systemic diagnostic workup, still in some cases, diagnosis can be speculated based on the patient's age, location of the lesion within the clavicle and the features seen on the MRI scan. Isolated lesions of the corpus callosum are rare and may represent permanent but also transient responses to various pathology termed "reversible splenial lesion syndrome" (RESLES) when in light of relevant clinical presentation. We present the first case of the RESLES after elective surgery for distant arteriovenous malformation (AVM), followed by a slight speech disturbance and MRI verified small, oval, well-circumscribed area of apparent cytotoxic edema in the center of the corpus callosum splenium, which completely resolved within 15 days. This study investigated the feasibility of transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), as well as its excision quality, its oncologic outcomes, and its impact on anorectal function. Patients who underwent TAMIS at a single colorectal unit of a tertiary university hospital for benign rectal lesions or earlystage malignant rectal lesions, along with unsuitable patients for radical interventions, were included. TAMIS seemed to be a feasible technique with adequate oncologic outcomes and high excision quality, which preserved patients ' quality of life. Objectives: In recent years, the local excision of benign rectal lesions or early-stage rectal cancers using minimally invasive surgical techniques has replaced radical interventions that caused impairment in patients' quality of life. The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), as well as its excision quality, its oncologic outcomes, and its impact on anorectal function. Methods: Patients who underwent TAMIS at a single colorectal unit of a tertiary university hospital from 2015 until 2020 for benign rectal lesions or early-stage malignant rectal lesions, along with unsuitable patients for radical interventions, were included in the present study. Results: Twenty-five patients underwent TAMIS for rectal lesions. Their median distance from the anal verge was 7 cm (range 4–12 cm) and their median size was 3.8 cm (range 2–6 cm). The median operative duration was 75 minutes (range 30–150 minutes) and the median hospitalization interval was 2 days (range 1–6 days). In addition, the negative resection rate was 100% and the recurrence rate was 4% during an average follow-up period of 30 months (range 3–36 months). Two patients (8%) presented short-term complications, and in 1 patient (4%) a hybrid technique was required. Seventeen patients (68%) reported moderate incontinence symptoms 6 weeks postoperatively that subsided in all patients 3 months postoperatively. Conclusions: TAMIS seemed to be a feasible technique with adequate oncologic outcomes and high excision quality, which preserved patients' quality of life. Background: Lymphoepithelioma-like intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (LELICC) is a rare variant of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection was considered to play a pivotal role in the tumorigenesis of LELICC. It is difficult to diagnosis of LEL-ICC due to the lack of specific features regarding the laboratory test results and imaging findings. At present, the diagnosis of LEL-ICC mainly depends on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations. In addition, the prognosis of LEL-ICC was better than classical cholangiocarcinomas. To our knowledge, only few cases of LEL-ICC have been reported in the literature. Case presentation: We presented a case of a 32-year-old Chinese female with LEL-ICC. She had a 6-month history of upper abdominal pain. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 1.1× 1.3 cm lesion in the left lobe of liver, appearing low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. The patient underwent laparoscopic left lateral sectionectomy. The postoperative histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations results allowed for the definitive diagnosis of LEL-ICC. The patient was free from tumor recurrence after a 28 months follow-up. Conclusion: In this study, we reported a rare case of LEL-ICC associated with both HBV and EBV infection. EBV infection might play a pivotal role in the carcinogenesis of LEL-ICC, and surgical resection is still the most effective treatment at present. Burns represent a complex medical entity, not only due to the management required, but because of the different systemic complications present in these patients, currently, gastrointestinal alterations have been the subject of study for its correlation as a factor of poor prognosis in the natural history of the disease. This paper addresses the different gastrointestinal clinical entities present in burned patients among which are: ileus, bleeding digestive, compartimental syndrome, intestinal perforation and pseudomembranous colitis. To speak of gastrointestinal complications is to refer not only to the complications of the injury, but in many cases secondary to a vigorous medical treatment to which the patient is exposed, as such there is no classification based on the period in which these complications appear; that why a search was made of the different complications in relation to their time of appearance and a classification is proposed in acute and chronic, taking into account the first week of their development for their best understanding. Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and tissue loss treated with primary isolated femoral bifurcation endarterectomy (FBE) or with FBE combined with bypass surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed in a tertiary university-based care centre. Between January 2008 and December 2019, a prospectively collected database of patients suffering from CLTI and tissue loss and undergoing either primary FBE (group A) or FBE in combination with bypass surgery (group B) was analysed. Study endpoints were ulcer healing, primary and secondary patency rate, limb salvage, and survival. Results: In total, FBE was performed in 73 patients and FBE with bypass in 60 patients. Between both groups, there were no significant differences regarding demographic data or the Global Limb Anatomic Staging System (GLASS) grade III and IV of femoropopliteal lesions. After 3 years, ulcer healing could be achieved in 72% of FBE and in 75% of FBE with bypass patients. The primary patency rate was 95% and 91% for FBE and 83% and 80% for FBE with bypass after one and three years, respectively. The 3-year limb-salvage rate was 78% for FBE and 84% for FBE with bypass. The secondary patency rate after one and three years was 99% and 97% for FBE and 93% and 88% for FBE with bypass. Conclusions: FBE and FBE with bypass are equally effective for ulcer healing in cases of combined CFA and superficial femoral artery lesions. There was no significant difference between both groups regarding primary and secondary patency rates, limb salvage rates and ulcer healing. Isolated FBE could be an alternative strategy in patients with higher operative risk.

Long-range phase synchrony in the α-oscillation band (near 10 Hz) has been proposed to facilitate information integration across anatomically segregated regions. Which areas may top-down regulate such cross-regional integration is largely unknown. We previously found that the moment-to-moment strength of high-α band (10-12 Hz) phase synchrony co-varies with activity in a fronto-parietal (FP) network. This network is critical for adaptive cognitive control functions such as cognitive flexibility required during set-shifting. Using electroencephalography (EEG) in 23 patients with focal frontal lobe lesions (resected tumors), we tested the hypothesis that the FP network is necessary for modulation of high-α band phase synchrony. Global phase-synchrony was measured using an adaptation of the phase-locking value (PLV) in a sliding window procedure, which allowed for measurement of changes in EEG-based resting-state functional connectivity across time. As hypothesized, the temporal modulation (range and standard deviation) of high-α phase synchrony was reduced as a function of FP network lesion extent, mostly due to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) lesions. Furthermore, patients with dlPFC lesions exhibited reduced cognitive flexibility as measured by the Trail-Making Test (set-shifting). Our findings provide evidence that the FP network is necessary for modulatory control of high-α band long-range phase synchrony, and linked to cognitive flexibility.

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death among women in low- and middle-income countries, and women living with HIV are at high risk for cervical cancer. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and correlates of cervical cancer and pre-cancer lesions and to examine cervical cancer knowledge among women living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy in rural Andhra Pradesh, India. We conducted cytology-based screening and administered a standardized questionnaire among 598 HIV-infected women. We found 5 (0.8%), 39 (6.5%), 29 (4.9%), and 4 (0.7%) had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), and squamous cervical carcinoma (SCC), respectively. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, ASCUS/LSIL was independently associated with age >16 years old at first sexual encounter and smokeless tobacco use. We found no factors associated with HSIL/SCC. In total, 101 women (16.9%) had heard of cervical cancer and 28 (27.7%) of them correctly identified HIV infection as a risk factor. In light of the high prevalence of pre-cancer lesions and low level of cervical cancer knowledge in our study population, focused interventions are needed to improve cervical cancer literacy and prevention among rural women living with HIV.

En el presente estudio de caso se da a conocer el efecto de la elec-troacupuntura en combinación con el ultrasonido terapéutico sobre secuelas de esguince cervical, siendo éste un mecanismo de lesión, que acontece por una flexión y extensión forzada del cuello, afectan-do los tejidos blandos implicados, generando incapacidad funcional y alteraciones en la calidad de vida. Se ha observado en estudios pre-vios que al menos del 14 al 42% de las personas que padecen esta patología, el dolor y las secuelas permanecen de manera crónica.La electroacupuntura en esguince cervical ha demostrado gene-rar un efecto analgésico en menor tiempo generando también menos costos que un tratamiento farmacológico, así mismo se ha demostrado que el ultrasonido terapéutico en el tratamiento de padecimientos del sistema osteomioarticular genera respuestas fa-vorables con gran efecto en síntomas leves y moderados para me-jorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes. Es por ello que se emplea el tratamiento de electroacupuntura sobre los puntos V10 (Tianzhu), ID9 (Jianzhen) y la aplicación de ultrasonido terapéutico para disminuir el dolor y aumentar los rangos de movilidad de la región cervical, mejorando así la calidad de vida del paciente.

Gross and microscopic lesion characterizations and comparing its effect in the small intestine of sheep and goats experimentally infected with T. colubriformis were undertaken in the study.Methods: During the study period, 13 sheep and 14 goats were included in the experiment. The larvae of T. culibriformis were obtained from abattoirs and larvae were recovered by Bearmann techniques. The infective larvae of T. culibriformis (L3) as a single dose of 10,000 per-animal was administered orally to infected groups of sheep and goats. Blood was collected for hematological and serum biochemical analysis. Tissues for gross and histopathologic lesions characterization were collected from killed infected animals at 56 days.Results: From the infected group, the total recovered mean worm burden was recorded as higher in goats (P< 0.05) than sheep, with an establishment rate of 50.16% and 34.46%, respectively. The total mean PCV, Hb, and albumin values recorded in the infected groups of sheep and goats were significantly (P< 0.05) lower than non-infected control of both animal groups. In goats, the total serum protein was significantly (P< 0.05) lower in the infected group than the non-infected control group. Gross lesions found were enteritis with petechial hemorrhages, edema, hyperemia, and mucosal slough, which were marked in the duodenum (62.69%) and jejunum (33.33%) in sheep and 47.05% duodenum and 45.09% jejunum in goats. The microscopic lesions developed by T. colubriformis were subtotal villus atrophy, hemorrhage, straightened and elongated dilated crypts, loss of epithelium, mucosal erosion, and infiltration of inflammatory cells.Conclusion: The present study showed that T. colubriformis infection caused physiological and pathological changes of the small-intestine in sheep and goats, with more severe infection in goats than sheep, although they were under the same management condition.Keywords: control, experimental infection, lesion, sheep and goat, T. colubriformis

PurposeWe aimed to compare two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, Dixon and spectral attenuated inversion recovery (SPAIR) fat-suppression, in terms of image quality and suitability for evaluating thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) lesion characteristics.MethodsThis cross-sectional, retrospective study involved 70 patients with TAO (140 eyes) who underwent orbital coronal MRI examinations, including Dixon-transverse relaxation (T2)-weighted imaging (T2WI) and SPAIR-T2WI, between 2020 and 2022. Numerical simulations can reflect the changes in physiological properties caused by various factors in the cochlea. To analyze the influence of lesions of the basilar membrane (BM) on the dynamic response of the middle ear. Based on healthy human ear CT scan images, use PATRAN software to build a three-dimensional finite element model of the human ear, then apply NASTRAN software to conduct analysis of solid-fluid coupled frequency response. The influence of lesions in the BM on the dynamic response of the middle ear is simulated through the method of numerical simulation. Through comparing experimental data and the frequency-response curve of displacement of BM and stapes, the validity of the model in this paper was verified. Regarding sclerosis in BM, the most obvious decline of displacement and velocity exists in the range of 800–10,000Hz and 800–2000Hz frequency, respectively. The higher degree of sclerosis, the more obvious decline becomes. The maximal decline of hearing can reach from 6.2 dB to 9.1 dB. Regarding added mass in BM, the most obvious decline of displacement exists in the range of 600–1000Hz frequency, and the maximal decline of hearing can reach 4.0 dB. The association between trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and multiple sclerosis (MS) is well established. Many MS patients with TN have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of a symptomatic demyelinating lesion. Although infratentorial presentations are included in the diagnostic criteria for MS, there remains confusion in clinical practice as to whether TN should be considered a clinically isolated syndrome for the application of McDonald criteria. In this case series, we discuss this diagnostic quandary in patients presenting with TN and additional MRI findings suggestive of MS and highlight the unmet need for data in such patients to optimally guide their care. S100 proteins belong group of calcium-binding proteins and are present in physiological intracellular and extracellular regulatory activities, such as cell differentiation, and act in inflammatory and neoplastic pathological processes. Recently, its expressions in the nervous system have been extensively studied, seeking to elucidate its action at the level of the thalamus: A structure of the central nervous system that is part of important circuits, such as somatosensory, behavioral, memory and cognitive, as well as being responsible for the transmission and regulation of information to the cerebral cortex. This article is an integrative review of scientific literature, which analyzed 12 studies present in Pubmed. The analysis showed that the relationship of S100 proteins and the thalamus has been described in neoplastic processes, mental disorders, hypoxia, trauma, stress, infection, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. In summary, it is possible to conclude that this protein family is relevant as a marker in processes of thalamic injury, requiring further studies to better understand its clinical, preclinical meanings and its prognostic value. Background & Method: The aim of present study is to describe typical sonographic appearance of lesion in wrist pain patient and detect pathology possible with wrist x ray. All patients with wrist joint pain examined by the orthopedic opd & ipd and referred to the dept. of radio-diagnosis. A pre-informed written consent is taken from the patient, which is attached to a questionnaire which include the patient's history, general physical examination and detailed wrist joint examination. Result: Cross sectional statistical analysis of X -ray findings of study subjects based on numbers and percentages, reveal that 91% of subjects had normal findings and rest 9% had abnormal findings. Cross sectional statistical analysis of ultrasound findings tendons of study subjects based on numbers and percentages, reveal that 27subjects had abnormal findings, among which 12 subjects had De Quervain's tenosynovitis, 7 subjects had flexor tenosynovitis, 8 subjects had extensor tenosynovitis. Conclusion: 100 Patients with wrist pain, associated symptoms include swelling 31 (31%), numbness 4 (4%), restriction of movements 3(3%). In clinical practice, the diagnosis of breast lesions is achieved by the triple approach of the specialized surgeon, radiologist and pathologist. The recommended approach to breast lesions should always include a detailed history, along with a thorough clinical examination, mammography and/or ultrasound, as well as preoperative cytodiagnosis. In this context, fine needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsy are the methods of choice for histological diagnosis. Introduction: Cognitive impairment includes the abnormality of learning, memory and judgment, resulting in severe learning and memory impairment and social activity impairment, which greatly affects the life quality of individuals. However, the specific mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in different behavioral paradigms remain to be elucidated. Methods: The study utilized two behavioral paradigms, novel location recognition (NLR) and novel object recognition (NOR), to investigate the brain regions involved in cognitive function. These tests comprised two phases: mice were presented with two identical objects for familiarization during the training phase, and a novel (experiment) or familiar (control) object/location was presented during testing. Immunostaining quantification of c-Fos, an immediate early gene used as a neuronal activity marker, was performed in eight different brain regions after the NLR or NOR test. Results: The number of c-Fos-positive cells was significantly higher in the dorsal part of the lateral septal nucleus (LSD) in the NLR and dentate gyrus (DG) in the NOR experiment group than in the control group. We further bilaterally lesioned these regions using excitotoxic ibotenic acid and replenished the damaged areas using an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) strategy. Discussion: These data reinforced the importance of LSD and DG in regulating spatial and object recognition memory, respectively. The locked-in syndrome (LiS) is characterized by quadriplegia with preserved vertical eye and eyelid movements and retained cognitive abilities. Subcategorization, aetiologies and the anatomical foundation of LiS are discussed. The damage of different structures in the pons, mesencephalon and thalamus are attributed to symptoms of classical, complete and incomplete LiS and the locked-in plus syndrome, which is characterized by additional impairments of consciousness, making the clinical distinction to other chronic disorders of consciousness at times difficult. Other differential diagnoses are cognitive motor dissociation (CMD) and akinetic mutism. Treatment options are reviewed and an early, interdisciplinary and aggressive approach, including the provision of psychological support and coping strategies is favoured. The establishment of communication is a main goal of rehabilitation. Finally, the quality of life of LiS patients and ethical implications are considered. While patients with LiS report a high quality of life and well-being, medical professionals and caregivers have largely pessimistic perceptions. The negative view on life with LiS must be overthought and the autonomy and dignity of LiS patients prioritized. Knowledge has to be disseminated, diagnostics accelerated and technical support system development promoted. More well-designed research but also more awareness of the needs of LiS patients and their perception as individual persons is needed to enable a life with LiS that is worth living. Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) is not only a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) but it is also an aggressive and highly infiltrating neoplasm with distinct histomorphology. Histogenetic concept in the pathogenesis of the tumor would eradicate controversies regarding the resemblance of ASC with mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid SCC. Hence, we intend to present a case series of four cases of ASC in the head‑and‑neck region reported in a single institution in the past 10 years. Head‑and‑neck ASC lesions have been reported in the thyroid gland, nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Intraoral lesions are mostly seen in the tongue and floor of the mouth, but in our case series, the most common site was the maxillary alveolus. Therapeutic approach toward nonconventional malignancies of epithelial origin should include proper analysis of the biological behavior of disease, the anatomical site, sensitivity of lesion to radiation, and systemic treatment modality. Hence, for better understanding of the behavior of lesions such as ASC, immunohistochemical analysis plays a significant role as it provides an insight into the origin and also accentuates the chances of enhanced therapeutic model for treating any such variant of SCC. The number of deaths due to melanoma skin cancer has rapidly increased in recent years. The timely diagnosis of the lesions of melanoma skin cancer can potentially increase the survival rate of such a chronic disease. However, the detection of these lesions is a challenging task, especially in the presence of occlusions, such as clinical artifacts, blood vessels, and color contrast variation, etc. The current state-of-the-art detection and segmentation methods are based on fully convolutional neural networks, which utilize an encoder-decoder method. However, these methods produce coarse segmentation masks due to the loss of location information during the encoding layers. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a highly effective Hybrid detection and segmentation method based on the integration of RetinaNet and MaskRCNN, which utilizes a pyramid module of lateral connections and top-down paths to compensate for the loss of spatial features information. The proposed method is trained and validated on Melanoma-ISIC-2018 and PH2 datasets. Experiment results on the unseen PH2 dataset illustrate the improved generalization ability of the method. The efficacy with other methods such as Encoder-Decoder, Generative Adversarial Network(GAN), UNet Deep Convolutional Neural Network-support vector machine(DCNN-SVM), Encoder-Fully Connected Network(EFCN), Enhanced Convolutional-Deconvolutional Networks(ECDNs), UNet, and Handcrafted has also been compared. The results, show that the proposed method outperforms above methods by 7.7%, 12.9%, 11.4%, 14.4%, 14.9%, 18.6%, 25.1%, respectively, in terms of accuracy. The relationship between the hippocampus and spatial cognition is a major issue in cognitive neuroscience, but research on fish is limited. Eels are known to migrate on a large scale, but there have been few behavioral studies on the individual level and few studies on the brain. In this paper, the author introduce an anatomical study to investigate the characteristics of the eel brain using a new index of brain size, as well as an experimental study of their spatial learning. They displayed reasonable ability of spatial learning based on either visual or hydrodynamic cues. Furthermore, based on the telencephalic lesion studies, a model in which sensory information is received in the medial part of the dorso-lateral telencephalon and sent the information to the ventral part of the dorso-lateral telencephalon, which is suggested to be the mammalian hippocampus analogue, is proposed. There is a possibility that both completely wild eels and completely farmed ones （individuals that do not experience sea） can be studied, and the eels are expected to be useful animals for research on relationships between environment and development of the brains. Infrared thermographic imaging of horses is becoming more popular in equine practice, and it is regarded to be a valuable method for detecting lesions with the potential to cause lameness. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of thermal camera in determine the location of lesions in horses with lameness. Twenty four Arabian horses aged 6.3±1.8 (mean±standard deviation) years old were included in this study. Temperature measurements were obtained with a thermal camera on the fore and hindlimb of all horses with lameness and the area where the temperature increased (suspected area) was detected. Following the suspected area was determined, temperature measurements were performed in the symmetric area of the same animal. All thermal camera temperatures were taken from four different points (lateral, medial, dorsal, palmar/plantar) and the average of measurements was recorded. The mean temperature measurement in the suspected area (34.7±1.7 °C) was significantly higher than the symmetric area (31.8±2.1 °C) in horses (p<0.001). In conclusion, thermography can be used to determine rapidly and effectively the localization of the orthopedic lesion in horses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serrated lesions in the colorectum include all epithelial neoplastic lesions, which show a sawtooth-like morphology in the epithelial crypts. Classification systems nosologically divide colon serrated polyps into three different categories, primarily emphasizing their micromorphological growth pattern and cytodifferentiation: (1) hyperplastic polyps, (2) sessile serrated adenomas/polyps and (3) traditional serrated adenomas. Overall, 109 patients with serrated lesions of the colon, who underwent endoscopic or surgical polypectomy/tumorectomy during one or multiple endoscopic or surgical interventions, over a four-year period, were analyzed. The average age of patients was 62.8 ± 11.6 years. The frequency of serrated lesions of the colon in male patients was 2.4 times higher than in females (70.6% vs. 29.4%). All sessile serrated lesions without dysplasia were positive for CK7 and statistically significant compared to other serrated lesions, if this positivity was present in the complete crypt (p = 0.005). CK20 positivity, which is limited to the upper half of the crypt, is a special feature of hyperplastic polyps compared to other serrated lesions, which is statistically significant (p = 0.0078). Whereas, CK20 positivity of complete crypts is a statistically significant feature of traditional serrated adenomas (p < 0.01). Differences in the expression pattern of cytokeratin 7 and 20 in different serrated lesions may indicate different pathways of colorectal carcinogenesis, and be diagnostically and prognostically useful. Porcine respiratory disease is one of the most important health problems in pig production worldwide. Cranioventral pulmonary consolidation (CVPC) and pleurisy are the two most common lesions in the respiratory tract of slaughtered pigs. The present review paper discusses pathogens involved in the lesions, lesion prevalence, scoring systems, advantages and disadvantages of slaughterhouse examination, and the impact of CVPC and pleurisy on performance, carcass, and meat quality. Cranioventral pulmonary consolidation and pleurisy in slaughter pigs are characteristic for infections with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, respectively, although other pathogens may cause similar lesions and/or be involved in their development. The overall prevalence of CVPC and pleurisy in slaughter pigs are still high, being the prevalence of CVPC generally higher than that of chronic pleurisy. The advantages and disadvantages of slaughterhouse examination are discussed in relation to practical aspects, the assessment of lesions, the number and representativeness of the examined animals and the interpretation and value of the results for the stakeholders. The main scoring methods for CVPC and pleurisy are shortly reviewed. In general, scoring methods can be applied rapidly and easily, although significant variation due to abattoir and observer remains. Artificial intelligence-based technologies that automatically score lesions and facilitate processing of data may aid solving these problems. Cranioventral pulmonary consolidation and pleurisy have a major negative impact on pig performance, and the effects increase the extension of the lesions and/or presence of multiple lesions. The performance losses caused by these lesions, however, vary significantly between studies and farms, possibly due to differences in study population and used methodology. Both lesions also have a negative impact on different carcass and meat quality parameters, leading to increased risk for poor processing and storage of the carcasses. Monitoring lung lesions of slaughter pigs should be optimized and implemented routinely; however, it is recommended to complement this information with farm data and laboratory results for specific pathogens. Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease, endemic in central and west African regions, and has re‐emerged, currently causing an outbreak as of May 2022. In this systematic review, we aimed to characterize the current face of the disease, with a detailed categorization of mucocutaneous, as well as systemic symptoms of the disease. We searched four main online databases with the keywords "monkeypox" and "Orthopoxvirus". A total of 46 articles were included, with a cumulative number of 1984 confirmed cases. Patients were predominantly men who have sex with men, who were mostly in their 30s, with a history of unprotected sexual contact or international travel. Among mucocutaneous manifestations, anogenital lesions were the most commonly observed, followed by lesions on the limbs, face, trunk, and palms or soles. Among lesion types, vesiculopustular, pustular or pseudo‐pustular, vesicular‐umbilicated and papular lesions were the most common, mainly presenting asynchronously, with less than 10 lesions on each patient. Almost all patients also reported systemic manifestations, namely fever, lymphadenopathy, fatigue, myalgia, headaches, pharyngitis, and proctitis. Sexual contact is the main pathway of transmission in the current outbreak, with viral shedding in bodily fluids playing a key role. We've compared these idiosyncratic findings of the new outbreak with previous outbreaks. We've also gathered and categorized images from our included studies to make a "clinical atlas" for this "new" face of monkeypox, which can be of utmost importance for clinicians to be familiarized with, and have a clear picture of monkeypox for their differential diagnoses. Objectives The renal nephrometry score uses imaging characteristics such as lesion diameter, location, and proximity to hilar vessels to categorize renal masses by complexity for preoperative planning. These characteristics may also be used to determine the best approach to targeted renal biopsy. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of renal lesion characteristics as measured by the renal nephrometry score on the choice of modality used for performing a targeted renal lesion biopsy and increasing the chance of yielding a diagnostic biopsy. Materials and Methods All targeted computed tomography (CT)/ultrasound-guided renal biopsies performed by our radiology department from January 2017 to February 2020 were reviewed. Radiological characteristics and pathological outcomes were recorded with data on lesion size/ side, location in craniocaudal/anterior–posterior planes, endophytic/exophytic/mixed nature, and skin-lesion distance. Statistical Analysis Chi-squared tests, multivariate analysis, and t-tests were used in this study. Results Of the 145 consecutive patients included in the study, 86.2% (125/145) biopsies were diagnostic. About 54.5% (79/145) biopsies were ultrasound-guided, while 45.5% (66/145) were CT-guided. About 62.1% (90/145) biopsies revealed renal cell carcinoma. The highest rate of diagnostic biopsy was in the exophytic, laterally positioned mass either entirely below lower polar or above upper polar line. La articulación temporomandibular es la articulación bisagra que permite la apertura y cierre de la boca. Debido a las exigencias físicas y psíquicas de la ATM en músicos de viento, violinistas, violistas, cantantes y cantaores, estos profesionales sufren trastornos temporomandibulares en un 80% de los casos, muy por encima de la población normal. El objetivo de este artículo es recopilar información sobre esta problemática, para encontrar medidas preventivas y tratamientos que eviten el cese de la actividad profesional de estos músicos. Derivado de su práctica, los músicos de viento metal pueden llegar a sufrir maloclusiones, los violinistas y violistas luxaciones de la ATM y dolor articular, y los cantantes y cantaores disfunción o ruidos en la articulación. Ya que no pueden cesar su actividad musical, existen medidas preventivas para estas lesiones entre las que destacan las técnicas de relajación, la disminución del estrés y el calentamiento de los músculos de la cara, el cuello y la voz. Una vez que se ha producido la patología existen tratamientos, de abordaje multidisciplinar, siendo los más comunes la manipulación de la articulación por un fisioterapeuta, la farmacología antiinflamatoria, el frío local y la férula de descarga, existiendo también la posibilidad de cirugía. Pero lo más importante es crear conciencia en los músicos de tener una buena salud dento-facial.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is known to be critical for healthy memory function, but patients with MTL damage can, under certain circumstances, demonstrate successful learning of novel information encountered outside the laboratory. Here, we describe a patient, D.C., with extensive but focal bilateral MTL damage centering primarily on his hippocampus, whose memory for real-world experiences was assessed. Tests of remote memory indicated at least some capacity to retrieve specific details. To test his anterograde memory, he was taken on a tour of the NIH Clinical Center, with unique events occurring at each of ten specific locations. His memory for these events was tested after 1 h, and again after fifteen months. Initially, D.C. could not recall having participated in the tour, even when cued with photographs of specific places he had visited. However, he achieved 90% accuracy on a forced choice recognition test of old and new objects he encountered on the tour, and his recognition of these objects remained intact over a year later when he was tested once again. Subsequent recognition memory tests using novel picture stimuli in a standard laboratory-style computer task resulted in chance-level performance across multiple test formats and stimulus categories. The management of soft tissue damage during fracture treatment requires surgical proficiency and meticulous care adhering to established treatment protocols. This approach is paramount for minimizing the risk of potentially limb- or even life-threatening complications such as fracture-related infection (FRI) in all age groups. There is a general consensus on essential measures such as wound assessment, surgical debridement and early use of antibiotics. Treatment should always be based on the correct classification of the fracture and the corresponding soft tissue injury, but needs to be adapted to the individual patient considering general health status, secondary diagnoses and currently available treatment options.
