Climatic drivers of the size and body condition of forage fish in the North Pacific are poorly known. We hypothesized that length and condition of forage fish in the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) vary in relation to ocean temperature on multiple scales. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed morphometric data for capelin (Mallotus catervarius) and Pacific sand lance (PSL; Ammodytes personatus) sampled by a seabird (Cerorhinca monocerata) in two regions of the GoA, 1993–2016. Based on previous studies, we predicted that capelin length and body condition (Fulton's K) would be negatively related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and sea surface temperature (SST), whereas PSL length and condition would be positively related. Interannual variation in length and body condition was evaluated relative to seasonal values of ocean climate using regression. Forage fish length and condition varied interannually, between sampling regions, and were dependent on the size/age class of the fish sampled. As predicted, length and body condition of capelin (mostly age 1+) were negatively related to the PDO and SST. Relationships with ocean climate for PSL varied by size/age class: positive for putative age‐0 fish and negative for putative age‐1+ fish. We conclude that our hypothesis was supported for capelin and partially supported for PSL. This study demonstrates that ocean climate determines key morphometric characteristics of forage fish that may relate to interannual variation in the energetic value of prey, and provides an example of how seabirds can be used to obtain specimens for evaluations of potential prey quality. In order to research spatial-temporal distribution characteristic of freezing damage risk for wine grape during overwintering in Ningxia,reasonable buried soil makes full use of temperature resources to ensure wine grape safe overwintering and reduce losses. Based on the various temperature observations in meteorological station of wine grape growth area in Ningxia during 1980-2018,verify by freezing damage data,19°Cextreme minimum temperature as the index critical value of freeze injury, researching of the spatial distribution and the interannual variation characteristic.Using mathematical statistical methods, linear trend fitting,Mann-kendall mutation test,Morlet wavelet analysis, the results showed that freezing damage risk is the highest in the north of main wine-growing areas in Ningxia,the freezing damage risk reduced gradually from north to south. The risk of freezing damage is higher in the north, east and west of the planting area; wintering days with freezing damage in Ningxia wine grape growing areas decreased.The number offreezing damage days during overwintering of Majorwine grape growth region in Ningxia decreased during 1980-2018.The decrease was obvious after 2007,the largest number offreezing damage was the winter of 2007, and 1992, 1988, 2002, 2010 and 1984 were the years with serious freezing damage in the actual investigation, the freezing damage with long duration occurred in all planting areas. In 1989、1990、2001 and 2006,there were not freezing injury days in the main wine-growing areas, the number of freezing injury days had periodic changes of 3a and 21a,and there was a trend mutation in 1988, 2002 and 2013. The river–floodplain network plays an important role in the carbon (C) cycle of the Amazon basin, as it transports and processes a significant fraction of the C fixed by terrestrial vegetation, most of which evades as CO2 from rivers and floodplains back to the atmosphere. There is empirical evidence that exceptionally dry or wet years have an impact on the net C balance in the Amazon. While seasonal and interannual variations in hydrology have a direct impact on the amounts of C transferred through the river–floodplain system, it is not known how far the variation of these fluxes affects the overall Amazon C balance. Here, we introduce a new wetland forcing file for the ORCHILEAK model, which improves the representation of floodplain dynamics and allows us to closely reproduce data‐driven estimates of net C exports through the river–floodplain network. Based on this new wetland forcing and two climate forcing datasets, we show that across the Amazon, the percentage of net primary productivity lost to the river–floodplain system is highly variable at the interannual timescale, and wet years fuel aquatic CO2 evasion. However, at the same time overall net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and C sequestration are highest during wet years, partly due to reduced decomposition rates in water‐logged floodplain soils. It is years with the lowest discharge and floodplain inundation, often associated with El Nino events, that have the lowest NEP and the highest total (terrestrial plus aquatic) CO2 emissions back to atmosphere. Furthermore, we find that aquatic C fluxes display greater variation than terrestrial C fluxes, and that this variation significantly dampens the interannual variability in NEP of the Amazon basin. These results call for a more integrative view of the C fluxes through the vegetation‐soil‐river‐floodplain continuum, which directly places aquatic C fluxes into the overall C budget of the Amazon basin. This paper investigates the interannual wave climate variability in the Yellow Sea (YS) using the Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN) wave model. Interannual variations of both the monthly mean and extreme wave conditions are weaker than their seasonal counterparts. Meanwhile, both exhibit significant seasonal variations. The interannual variability of the seasonal mean wave condition is strongest in winter and weakest in summer. It basically decreases both northward and shoreward in all four seasons. However, the longitudinal position of the maximum variability shifts zonally with seasons. On the other hand, the interannual variability of the seasonal extreme wave condition is strongest roughly in fall, but weakest in winter in most regions of the YS except in the southeastern YS, where the largest variability appears in summer. As for the spatial distribution, the largest variability occurs in the middle YS in spring, while in the southeastern YS in other three seasons. Both of them are dominantly controlled by the local sea surface wind forcing with possibly minor contributions from the western Pacific Ocean. The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is particularly sensitive to global climate change, especially to elevated temperatures, when compared with other ecosystems. However, few studies use long‐term field measurements to explore the interannual variations in plant biomass under climate fluctuations. Here, we examine the interannual variations of plant biomass within two vegetation types (alpine meadow and alpine shrub) during 2008–2017 and their relationships with climate variables. The following results were obtained. The aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB) response differently to climate fluctuations, the AGB in KPM was dominated by mean annual precipitation (MAP), whereas the AGB in PFS was controlled by mean annual air temperature (MAT). However, the BGB of both KPM and PFS was only weakly affected by climate variables, suggesting that the BGB in alpine ecosystems may remain as a stable carbon stock even under future global climate change. Furthermore, the AGB in PFS was significantly higher than KPM, while the BGB and R/S in KPM were significantly higher than PFS, reflecting the KPM be more likely to allocate more photosynthates to roots. Interestingly, the proportion of 0–10 cm root biomass increased in KPM and PFS, whereas the other proportions both decreased, reflecting a shift in biomass toward the surface layer. This study investigates characteristics of the convective quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO) over the South China Sea (SCS) and western North Pacific (WNP) in spring, and the interannual variation of its intensity. Convective QBWO over the WNP and SCS shows both similarities and differences. Convective QBWO over the WNP originates mainly from southeast of the Philippine Sea and propagates northwestward. In contrast, convective QBWO over the SCS can be traced mainly to east of the Philippines and features a westward propagation. Such a westward or northwestward propagation is probably related to n = 1 equatorial Rossby waves. During the evolution of convective QBWO over the WNP and SCS, the vertical motion and specific humidity exhibit a barotropic structure and the vertical relative vorticity shows a baroclinic structure in the troposphere. The dominant mode of interannual variation of convective QBWO intensity over the SCS-WNP region in spring is homogeneous. Its positive phase indicates enhanced convective QBWO intensity accompanied by local enhanced QBWO intensity of vertical motion throughout the troposphere as well as local enhanced (weakened) QBWO intensity of kinetic energy, vertical relative vorticity, and wind in the lower (upper) troposphere. The positive phase usually results from local increases of the background moisture and anomalous vertical shear of easterlies. The latter contributes to the relationship between the dominant mode and QBWO intensities of kinetic energy, vertical relative vorticity, and wind. Finally, a connection between the dominant mode and the sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific Ocean is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Right after the 2007 Hebei Spirit Oil Spill phytoplankton ecosystems were investigated for 11 years based on the seasonal monitoring of the composition and abundance of phytoplankton species. Comparable time-series data from the 1989 Exxon Valdez or the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill sites were not available. It was suggested that the ecological healthiness of phytoplankton ecosystems at EVOS sites had recovered after 10 years following the oil spill based on chlorophyll concentrations even though these concentrations only represented phytoplankton communities in most cases. Chlorophyll concentrations can only reflect limited aspects of highly complex phytoplankton ecosystems. During the last 11 years following the 2017 HSOS, extreme variabilities were met in the seasonally averaged ratios of diatoms to phototrophic flagellates including dinoflagellates based on the microscopic cell countings. Summer phytoplankton communities exhibited some cyclic interannual changes in dominant groups every 2-4 years. During the early years (2008-2010) cryptophytes or raphidophytes (Chattonella spp.) dominated alternately each year, which was repeated again in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Two thecate dinoflagellates, Tripos fusus and Tripos furca, together accounted for 52.5% and 50.0% of all organisms in the summers of 2011 and 2012, respectively, which was repeated again in 2018. Summer occurrence and dominance by the phototrophic flagellates including HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms) species as well as their interannual variabilities in the oil spill sites could be utilized as markers for the stable and long-term management of healthy ecosystems. For this type of scientific ecosystem management monitoring of chlorophyll concentrations may sometimes be insufficient to gain a proper and comprehensive understanding of phytoplankton communities located in areas where oil spills have occurred and harmed the ecosystem. • CMIP6 models are better than CMIP5 models for the interannual variability of FCO 2. • Overestimated interannual SST variation decreases interannual pCO 2sea variation in the central EP. • Wind controls the interannual variation of simulated FCO 2 in the central EP. • Precipitation has an important role in interannual pCO 2sea variation in the warm pool. Air–sea carbon fluxes (FCO 2) simulated by 20 CMIP6 models in the pre-industrial control experiments are analyzed. 13 models can simulate the dominant role of the equatorial Pacific (EP) in the interannual variation of global FCO 2 , which is related to ENSO. Compared with CMIP5, CMIP6 has improved the simulation performance of interannual variation of global FCO 2 , while for the simulation of FCO 2 in the tropical Pacific, most CMIP6 models inherit some biases of their CMIP5 versions. For example, the simulated interannual fluctuation of precipitation leads to excessive interannual variations of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and then of the partial pressure of CO 2 at the sea surface (pCO 2sea) in the western tropical Pacific, especially in the warm pool. Another inherited disadvantage is the underestimated interannual fluctuation of FCO 2 in the central tropical Pacific from 120ºW to 180ºW. The underestimation includes two aspects: the simulated intensity of the fluctuation is weak, and the negative response region of CO 2 outgassing to the ENSO index is narrow. There are two main reasons for the weak interannual fluctuation strength of FCO 2 in the models. One is that most models cannot represent the strong interannual variation of 10 m wind speed (vm10) in the central tropical Pacific, and the other is that the interannual fluctuation of pCO 2sea in the central tropical Pacific in most models is too weak, which is related to the overestimated interannual variation of sea surface temperature (SST) here. The underestimated spatial range of negative response of CO 2 outgassing to the ENSO index is mainly induced by the simulated interannual variations of the vm10 and of the vertical transport of DIC which is related to the vertical upwelling rate. According to the simulation results of CMIP6, the improvement of the simulation performance of the interannual variations of the global and tropical Pacific FCO 2 is still dependent on the improvement of the simulation performance of physical climate, such as wind fields, SST, and the entrainment velocity at the bottom of the mixed layer. The effects of air–sea coupling over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) on the eastward propagating boreal winter intraseasonal oscillation (MJO) are investigated by comparing a fully coupled and a partially decoupled Indian Ocean experiment using the SINTEX-F coupled model. Air–sea coupling over the TIO significantly enhances the intensity of the eastward propagations of the MJO along the 5°–10°S zonal areas. The zonal asymmetry of the SST anomaly (SSTA) is responsible for the enhanced eastward propagation. A positive SSTA appears to the east of the MJO convection, which results in the boundary layer moisture convergence and positively feeds back to the MJO convection. In addition, the air–sea interaction effect on the eastward propagation of the MJO is related to the interannual variations of the TIO. Air–sea coupling enhances (reduces) the eastward-propagating spectrum during the negative Indian Ocean dipole mode and positive Indian Ocean basin mode. Such phase dependence is attributed to the role of the background mean westerly in affecting the wind–evaporation–SST feedback. Air–sea coupling (decoupling) enhances (reduces) the zonal asymmetry of the low-level specific humidity, and thus the eastward propagation spectrum of the MJO.

Most peripheral seas of the Arctic Ocean have seen a pronounced rise in sea surface temperatures in the past century, and this signature of Arctic amplification in proximity to the land suggests that the observed marine and terrestrial changes might be connected to each other. Using in situ observations of temperature from nine coastal meteorological stations around Greenland (GrSTs) and remotely sensed fields of sea ice extent (SIE), we examine the interannual variations of surface air temperature (T2m) and sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies associated with the GrSTs and SIEs surrounding Greenland, specifically within Baffin Bay, the Greenland Sea and Kara-Barents Seas. During winter, the interannual variation in T2m and SLP of the west and south coasts of GrSTs and the Baffin Bay SIE are different from that of the east coast of GrSTs and the SIEs in the Greenland Sea and Kara-Barents Seas. The GrSTs on the west and south coasts of Greenland and the Baffin Bay SIE are associated with the T2m anomalies over Baffin Bay and Davis Strait. The winter SLP patterns associated with these GrSTs and SIEs show positive anomalies over the Arctic and negative anomalies over the North Atlantic with a large-scale atmospheric circulation such as the winter NAO. On the contrary, the east coast of GrSTs and the SIEs in the Greenland Sea and Kara-Barents Seas are correlated with the T2m anomalies over the Greenland Sea and Barents Sea. The surface wind pattern associated with the SIEs in the Greenland Sea and Kara-Barents Seas has a cyclonic circulation in the Greenland Sea and Barents Sea. At the local scale the cyclonic circulation could induce negative SIE anomalies and contribute to increasing open water in the Greenland Sea and Barents Sea. The effect of the loss of sea ice and the heat from the open ocean warming to the atmosphere may influence the GrSTs in the east coast of Greenland. As a result, the T2m pattern associated with the GrSTs in the east coast of Greenland is similar to the pattern of the SIEs in the Greenland Sea and Kara-Barents Seas. During summer, the T2m anomalies associated with all GrSTs and SIEs have positive anomalies over mid-latitudes. The two times series of all GrSTs and SIEs fluctuate quickly and display large trends towards warming temperatures and decreasing SIE. The summer SLP associated with all GrSTs and SIEs are characterised by a seesaw pattern between positive anomalies over the Arctic and negative anomalies over mid-latitudes. The summer SLP anomalies are similar to the summer AO pattern, and it is noteworthy that the summer anticyclonic circulation over the Arctic and Greenland has contributed to the variability and trends in both summer GrSTs and SIEs.

Long-lived species are particularly interesting for investigation of trade-offs that shape reproductive allocation and the effective contribution to the next generations. Life history theory predicts that these species will buffer environmental stochasticity via changes in the reproductive investment, while maintaining high adult survival rates. The spur-thighed tortoise was selected as a case study in order to investigate the relationship between the linked maternal characteristics (size and age) and related traits in their hatchlings. We tracked naturally emerging hatchlings from young and old females under semi-natural conditions to test variations in hatchling numbers, body mass, size and survival over two years. We used linear mixed-effect models to analyze variations in hatchling body mass and size, and a mark–release–recapture framework to model their survival. Our study illustrates that old females of long-lived species have greater offspring numbers, greater survival and smaller size when compared with those of young females. The interannual variability evidenced the reduced offspring number and survival in the lower autumn rainfall and spring mean temperature year. Our results highlight the role of maternal age and climatic conditions in the population dynamics and the need for long-term studies of reproduction traits for designating adequate conservation strategies.

Central Asia is prone to wildfires, but the relationship between wildfires and climatic factors in this area is still not clear. In this study, the spatiotemporal variation in wildfire activities across Central Asia during 1997–2016 in terms of the burned area (BA) was investigated with Global Fire Emission Database version 4s (GFED4s). The relationship between BA and climatic factors in the region was also analyzed. The results reveal that more than 90% of the BA across Central Asia is located in Kazakhstan. The peak BA occurs from June to September, and remarkable interannual variation in wildfire activities occurs in western central Kazakhstan (WCKZ). At the interannual scale, the BA is negatively correlated with precipitation (correlation coefficient r = −0.66), soil moisture (r = −0.68), and relative humidity (r = −0.65), while it is positively correlated with the frequency of hot days (r = 0.37) during the burning season (from June to September). Composite analysis suggests that the years in which the BA is higher are generally associated with positive geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa over the WCKZ region, which lead to the strengthening of the downdraft at 500 hPa and the weakening of westerlies at 850 hPa over the region. The weakened westerlies suppress the transport of water vapor from the Atlantic Ocean to the WCKZ region, resulting in decreased precipitation, soil moisture, and relative humidity in the lower atmosphere over the WCKZ region; these conditions promote an increase in BA throughout the region. Moreover, the westerly circulation index is positively correlated (r = 0.53) with precipitation anomalies and negatively correlated (r = −0.37) with BA anomalies in the WCKZ region during the burning season, which further underscores that wildfires associated with atmospheric circulation systems are becoming an increasingly important component of the relationship between climate and wildfire.

Monthly mean sea-levels have annual maxima in August in the northeast Asian marginal seas (NEAMS). Based on satellite altimetry data, the rising rate of the August NEAMS sea-level (ANS, 4.2 mm∙yr−1) is greater than those of the NEAMS (3.6 mm∙yr−1) and global (3.4 mm∙yr−1) annual mean sea-levels. Thus, the interannual variations of ANS are classified as relatively high (period H) and low (period L) years and have been analysed because of the high risk of sea-level fluctuation to the coastal regions in August. In period H, there are large atmospheric pressure gradients between the high pressure zone in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) and the low pressure zone in the west of Taiwan (WT). In period L, the atmospheric pressure gradients are small between the above-mentioned zones. Large atmospheric pressure gradients induce strong west-northwestward wind stresses and more Ekman transport from the northwest Pacific Ocean into the NEAMS. The correlation coefficient between August NEAMS sea-level index (ANSI), which is the difference of atmospheric pressure anomalies between the KE and the WT, and the August NEAMS sea-level anomaly (ANSA) is 0.73. Although there is a significant correlation (coefficient: 0.64) between ANSA and the East Asian summer monsoon index (EASMI), ANSI might be more useful in estimating the variability of ANSA.

This study presents the climatological characteristics and physical mechanisms of Guinea Coast precipitation in June. Traditionally, the low-tropospheric air temperature and equivalent potential temperature ( θ e ) play crucial roles in the generation of monsoon precipitation through the following mechanisms: 1. Near-surface atmospheric front, depicted by steep ∂ θ e ∂ y , corresponds to the vertical motion in the lower troposphere. 2. Strong easterly wind in the middle troposphere (600–500 hPa), generated by a steep ∂ T ∂ y near the surface at 12° N, induces a positive vorticity to the south and vertical motion over the Guinea Coast (~5° N). Meanwhile, the strong Guinea Coastal precipitation, in association with the interannual variability, is mainly determined by the sea-surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the eastern equatorial Atlantic Ocean. In years of warm SST in the eastern equatorial Atlantic, ∂ θ e ∂ y in the lower troposphere is less pronounced than in normal years. However, the atmospheric buoyancy (moist static instability) increases, owing to a strong vertical θ e gradient ( ∂ θ e ∂ p ) arising from the increase in moisture and warm temperature in the lower troposphere over the warm SST area. Consequently, the eastern equatorial Atlantic warm SST modulates the Guinea Coastal thermodynamic structure, causing deep convection that increases precipitation south of the Guinea Coast. Forced by the eastern equatorial Atlantic warm SST anomaly, the strong precipitation and corresponding atmospheric structures are successfully simulated from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory global atmosphere model 2.1.

As the carbon monoxide (CO) total column over Asia is among the highest in the world, it is important to characterize its variations in space and time. Using Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) and Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) satellite data, the variations and trends in CO total column over Asia and its seven subregions during 2003−2017 are investigated in this study. The CO total column in Asia is higher in spring and winter than in summer and autumn. The seasonal maximum and minimum are in spring and summer respectively in the regional mean over Asia, varying between land and oceans, as well as among the subregions. The CO total column in Asia shows strong interannual variation, with a regional mean coefficient of variation of 5.8% in MOPITT data. From 2003 to 2017, the annual mean of CO total column over Asia decreased significantly at a rate of (0.58 ± 0.15)% per year (or −(0.11 ± 0.03) × 1017 molecules cm−2 per year) in MOPITT data, resulting from significant CO decreases in winter, summer, and spring. In most of the subregions, significant decreasing trends in CO total column are also observed, more obviously over areas with high CO total column, including eastern regions of China and the Sichuan Basin. The regional decreasing trends in these areas are over 1% per year. Over the entire Asia, and in fire-prone subregions including South Siberia, Indo-China Peninsula, and Indonesia, we found significant correlations between the MOPITT CO total column and the fire counts from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The variations in MODIS fire counts may explain 58%, 60%, 36%, and 71% of the interannual variation in CO total column in Asia and these three subregions, respectively. Over different land cover types, the variations in biomass burning may explain 62%, 52%, and 31% of the interannual variation in CO total column, respectively, over the forest, grassland, and shrubland in Asia. Extremes in CO total column in Asia can be largely explained by the extreme fire events, such as the fires over Siberia in 2003 and 2012 and over Indonesia in 2006 and 2015. The significant decreasing trends in MODIS fire counts inside and outside Asia suggest that global biomass burning may be a driver for the decreasing trend in CO total column in Asia, especially in spring. In general, the variations and trends in CO total column over Asia detected by AIRS are similar to but smaller than those by MOPITT. The two datasets show similar spatial and temporal variations in CO total column over Asia, with correlation coefficients of 0.86−0.98 in the annual means. This study shows that the interannual variation in atmospheric CO in Asia is sensitive to biomass burning, while the decreasing trend in atmospheric CO over Asia coincides with the decreasing trend in MODIS fire counts from 2003 to 2017.

The 30-60-day boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) is a dominant variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM), with its intensity being quantified by intraseasonal standard deviations based on OLR data. The spatial and interannual variations of the BSISO intensity are identified via empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis for the period 1981-2014. The first EOF mode (EOF1) shows a spatially coherent enhancement or suppression of BSISO activity over the entire ASM region, and the interannual variability of this mode is related to the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) contrast between the central-eastern North Pacific (CNP) and tropical Indian Ocean. In contrast, the second mode (EOF2) exhibits a seesaw pattern between the southeastern equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and equatorial western Pacific (EWP), with the interannual fluctuation linked with developing ENSO events. During strong years of EOF1 mode, the enhanced low-level westerlies induced by the summer-mean SSTA contrast between the warmer CNP and cooler tropical Indian Ocean tend to form a wetter moisture background over the eastern EIO, which interacts with intraseasonal low-level convergent flows, leading to stronger equatorial eastward propagation. The intensified easterly shear favors stronger northward propagation over the South Asian and Eastern Asian/Western North Pacific sectors, respectively. Opposite situation is for weak years. For interannual variations of EOF2 mode, the seesaw patterns with enhanced BSISO activity over the southeastern EIO while weakened activity over the EWP mostly occur in the La Niña developing summers, but inverse patterns appear in the El Niño developing summers. Changes in the relationship between interannual variation of spring (March–April–May) surface air temperature (SAT) over eastern Eurasia (SAT_EA) and Eurasian snow during 1972–2009 are investigated. The results show that the interannual variation in SAT_EA is significantly correlated with Eurasian snow cover anomalies (SCA) over two key regions, which include the western (SCAW) and eastern (SCAE) parts of the Eurasian continent. A pronounced climate shift of SAT_EA is observed around the late 1980s, and therefore, the data are divided into two subperiods, that is, 1972–1987 (P1) and 1988–2009 (P2). Examinations show that the relationship between SAT_EA and SCAW is impacted by the Arctic Oscillation. In contrast, the relationship between SCAE and the SAT_EA is Arctic Oscillation independent and is significantly increased from P1 to P2. Further analysis shows that the increased correlation between SAT_EA and SCAE from P1 to P2 cannot be well explained by the snow‐related surface heat flux. A wave train‐like anomalous circulation plays an important role in enhancing their relationship through intensified wind‐induced heat advection in P2, which causes reduced snow and increased SAT_EA. A lead‐lag regression analysis of the SCAE and the circulation anomalies indicates that the changes of the SCAE and SAT_EA are mainly responses to atmospheric circulation anomalies that occur 2 months before spring. Numerical experiments that use a linear baroclinic model indicate that the snow anomalies around Lake Baikal may impact the variation of SAT_EA through modulating atmospheric circulation over the East Asia‐North Pacific area. To explore the optimal combination of vegetation type, substrate type, and substrate thickness in a green roof and the interannual variation patterns of the runoff quality, eight green roof units were constructed in Shenzhen, China. Runoff quality of the eight units was monitored for 3 years (24 rainfall events). The rainfall event mean concentrations (EMC) were used to evaluate runoff quality as well as annual pollutant load. An orthogonal L8(24) experiment was designed to verify the significance of different factors. An optimal level of significant factors was selected to determine the optimal design of green roof. The optimal vegetation was Ophiopogon japonicus. The optimal substrate was modified perlite, while optimal substrate thickness was 200 mm. A three-year interannual variation analysis was performed on the optimal green roof. It was found that the interannual variation of each runoff quality index is different. The concentrations of SS, COD, and NH4+-N in the runoff decreased with years. The concentration of NO3−-N increased over time, while TP remained stable. The concentration of TN had certain volatility with no significant interannual variation. Overall, the runoff quality of the green roof improves over time. The optimal green roof’s runoff quality in the third year including 11 rainfall events was monitored. Results showed that the effluent quality from the green roof was lower than that of precipitation. The average concentrations of SS, COD, NH4+-N, TN, and TP decreased respectively by 37.85%, 28.89%, 30.25%, 14.52%, and 12.93%, but NO3−-N increased by 69.91% comparing to the traditional roof. South China suffers from high temperature frequently in mid-summer and this study aims to explore the interdecadal change of interannual variation of the mid-summer temperature in South China. It is revealed that the relationship between South China temperature and atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) experiences an interdecadal change around the early 1990s. Before the early 1990s, warmer summer in South China is associated with the mid-latitude teleconnection featured by higher pressure over the Ural Mountains and the Korean Peninsula and lower pressure around the Lake Baikal. South China is located at the southern flank of an anomalous high pressure. After the early 1990s, South China temperature is prominently influenced by the tropical SSTA, and meanwhile the mid-latitude teleconnection becomes much weaker. Warmer summer is associated with higher pressure centered over South China and the El Niño to La Niña transition phase. The higher pressure influencing South China is located more southwards after the early 1990s, and it is favored by the tropical SSTA. The warmer SST in summer over the western tropical Pacific enhances the local convection and triggers an anomalous local Hadley cell with stronger subsidence over South China, directly leading to higher pressure over South China. Moreover, the colder SST over the central-eastern Pacific induces an anomalous Walker circulation and further strengthens the convection over the western tropical Pacific, exerting an indirect impact on the higher pressure over South China. The relative role of the western Pacific warming and central-eastern Pacific cooling is verified by CAM4 simulations. The intimate relationship between the tropical SSTA and South China temperature occurs during the El Niño to La Niña transition phase, which is the case after the early 1990s and suggests higher predictability for South China temperature in the recent decades. Solar heating in summer in the Chukchi Sea was estimated using satellite-derived sea-ice concentration data and reanalysis shortwave radiation data. The shortwave radiation was validated by in-situ data obtained by the R/V Mirai and NCEP-CFSR/CFSv2 was found to reproduce in-situ data accurately compared with NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 and ERA-Interim. Solar heating integrated over the Chukchi Sea in summer varied interannually from 3.6 × 10 20  J in 2000 to 6.7 × 10 20  J in 2015, and was up to twice the northward heat flux through the Bering Strait. The total heating in the Chukchi Sea implies that the heat in the Chukchi Sea provided by northward heat flux through the Bering Strait is amplified by solar heating in the Chukchi Sea. We further compared these heat fluxes into the Chukchi Sea with the summertime northward heat flux through Barrow Canyon, an indicator of heat flux from the Chukchi Sea to the Arctic basin. The northward heat flux through Barrow Canyon was affected by the interannual variation of solar heating in the eastern Chukchi Sea. These results imply that modification of Pacific water in the Chukchi Sea by solar heating plays an important role in the interannual variation in heat transport from the Chukchi Sea to the western Arctic basin. Understanding interannual variation of zooplankton communities is a mean for assessment and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems. For this reason, we monitored the zooplankton community of the Sfax saltern (Tunisia) during four years (2000–2003). A multivariate method, the “STATICO analysis” was used to investigate the effect of environmental parameters on the abundance, distribution and composition of the zooplankton community according to time, in three ponds with different salinity values. The results revealed some seasonal and interannual variations of the zooplankton community. Copepods, which were the most abundant zooplankton species, were clearly influenced by the nutrient content variation (higher in spring and autumn) and the anthropogenic pollution level in each pond but their distribution was mainly related to salinity changes. In autumn, Oithona nana (Cyclopoida) proliferated in the least salty pond, Microsetella sp. (Harpacticoida) was abundant at intermediate salinity; and Harpacticus littoralis and Bryocamptus sp. Quantifying the ecological patterns of loss of ecosystem function in extreme drought is important to understand the carbon exchange between the land and atmosphere. Rain-use efficiency [RUE; gross primary production (GPP)/precipitation] acts as a typical indicator of ecosystem function. In this study, a novel method based on maximum rain-use efficiency (RUE max ) was developed to detect losses of ecosystem function globally. Three global GPP datasets from the MODIS remote sensing data (MOD17), ground upscaling FLUXNET observations (MPI-BGC), and process-based model simulations (BESS), and a global gridded precipitation product (CRU) were used to develop annual global RUE datasets for 2001–2011. Large, well-known extreme drought events were detected, e.g. 2003 drought in Europe, 2002 and 2011 drought in the U.S., and 2010 drought in Russia. Our results show that extreme drought-induced loss of ecosystem function could impact 0.9% ± 0.1% of earth's vegetated land per year and was mainly distributed in semi-arid regions. The reduced carbon uptake caused by functional loss (0.14 ± 0.03 PgC/yr) could explain >70% of the interannual variation in GPP in drought-affected areas ( p  ≤ 0.001). Climate change has been adversely affecting glaciers causing them to advance and recession worldwide. Existing studies have primarily attributed temperature as the leading factor causing glacier recession. However, detailed studies that investigate effect of other factors like presence of debris cover, slope, and contact with water bodies are still scarce. This research, thus investigated the role of supraglacial lakes in recession of debris-covered glaciers (DCG). Such glaciers were studied since these lakes are found in debris-covered glaciers only. For this purpose the interannual variation in area of supraglacial lakes of Dudh Koshi basin was computed to test the hypothesis that these lakes play a significant role in glacier recession. Supraglacial lakes were delineated using Google Earth Pro at five year intervals to assess interannual variation in lake area. Slope, elevation and change in supraglacial lake area were the predictors influencing average decadal change in area of glaciers. Two models prepared using multiple linear regression in Excel were compared. The first model used elevation and slope as predictors while the second model used change in supraglacial lake area as the additional predictor. The second model had a higher coefficient of determination (R square) and Adjusted R-square values of 99 % and 96 % compared to the first model. Further test statistics from Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) results were compared to test the hypothesis. Moreover the Root mean square error (RMSE) of second model was also less than the first one. Hence both the regression statistics and RMSE confirmed that change in area of supraglacial lakes was an important factor that influences overall recession of debris-covered glaciers. Nevertheless, use of high spatial and temporal resolution imageries along-with increase in number of glaciers sampled should be incorporated in future studies to ensure robust outcomes. Thus this research can bolster the overall understanding between glacier and glacial lake dynamics which will improve the resilience of downstream inhabitants from climate induced hazards, such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). The correlation between transport via the Bering Strait throughflow (BTF) and sea surface salinity (SSS) in the Bering Sea has been examined mainly using an atmosphere-ocean-ice coupled climate model that has an eddy-permitting ocean component. The SSS anomaly in the northwestern Bering Sea is high from winter to spring when the BTF transport anomaly is large in the cold season. Similar features can be seen in an observation dataset and two kinds of ocean data assimilation product. BTF transport is strongly correlated with sea surface height (SSH) in the northeastern Bering Sea, the southwestern Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. The SSH along the Russian coast in the Arctic Ocean is uncorrelated with the SSH in the Bering Sea, the meaning being that the Arctic SSH affects the BTF and the SSS independently of the SSH in the Bering Sea. The low SSH along the Siberian coast is correlated with easterly wind anomalies over the Laptev Sea and north of the New Siberian Islands. The relationship between the low Siberian-coast SSH and the high SSS in the Bering Sea, however, is not confirmed in 10 years of satellite-derived SSH. Mixed-layer salt budget analysis has revealed that the high SSS anomalies are mainly caused by the increases of horizontal advective salt convergence north of 62.5°N, and by the decreases of sea-ice melting south of 62.5°N, through the strengthening of the near-surface northeastward currents. Abstract: The year‐to‐year variability of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the eastern tropical Pacific is a significant phenomenon of the tropical climate system. Asymmetric interannual variation of precipitation on two sides of the Equator is often observed there in the boreal spring. We introduce a simple normalized asymmetric index and a double ITCZ index as well as a hierarchical clustering method to describe the ITCZ variation based on the tropical boreal spring precipitation from 1979 to 2017. We show that the indices and the clustering method give consistent categorization of asymmetric ITCZ variation. We find that the asymmetry of precipitation can be explained by the remote impact of the interannual variability of the central Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) on the horizontal gradient of surface pressure and surface wind convergence, especially the Modoki mode. The central Pacific SST also remotely modulates free‐tropospheric temperature and vertical stability in the eastern equatorial Pacific, but this remote impact is secondary to the wind convergence. Interannual variability of local SST south of the Equator plays little role in the precipitation variability, which is supported by numerical experiments with a regional atmospheric model. Results imply that surface wind convergence should be considered in convection schemes to improve the simulation of precipitation in the eastern tropical Pacific in climate models. The cloud variability and regime transition from stratocumulus to cumulus across the sea surface temperature front in the Kuroshio region over the East China Sea are important regional climate features and may affect the Earth's energy balance. However, because of large uncertainties among available cloud products, it is unclear which cloud datasets are more reliable for use in studying the regional cloud features and in validating cloud simulations in the region by climate models. In this study, the monthly low cloud amount (LCA) and total cloud amount (TCA) datasets in the region from Cloud--Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and International Comprehensive Ocean-- Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) are validated against the combined product of CloudSat + CALIPSO (CC) in terms of consistency and discrepancy in the climatologically mean, seasonal cycle, and interannual variation. The results show that LCA and TCA derived from MODIS and CALIPSO present relatively high consistency with CC data in the climatological annual mean and show similar behaviors in seasonal cycle. The consistency in LCA between the three datasets and the CC is generally good in cold seasons (winter, spring, and fall) but poor in summer. MODIS shows the best agreement with CC in fall, with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 at a confidence level over 99 %. CALIPSO and MODIS can provide a competitive description of TCA in all seasons, and ICOADS is good in terms of the climatological seasonal mean of TCA in winter only. Moreover, the interannual complivariation of LCA and TCA from all datasets is highly correlated with that from CC in both winter and spring with the Matching Score ranging between 2/3 and 1. The properties, formation, and dissipation of the North Pacific Eastern Subtropical Mode Water (ESTMW), their interannual variability, and impact on spiciness anomalies in the upper permanent pycnocline were investigated using Argo profiling float data in 2005–2015. The core temperature and salinity of ESTMWs were horizontally compensated to a constant density, and core potential density concentrates in a range of 24.5–25.2 kg m −3 with two distinct peaks. ESTMWs showed different spatial distribution and persistence for its core potential density. Denser ESTMWs with a potential density of 24.9–25.2 kg m −3 were formed in winter mixed layer depth maximum centered at 30°N, 140°W and lighter ESTMWs of 24.5–24.9 kg m −3 were formed south and east of it. After formation through shoaling of the winter mixed layer, the former persisted until the following autumn and a small part of it subducted in winter, while the latter dissipated in summer. The formation region of ESTMW corresponded to the summer sea surface density maximum resulting from its poleward sea surface salinity front. Sea surface density maximum maintains weak stratification during summer, preconditioning the deepening of the winter mixed layer and hence the formation of ESTMWs. A relationship between the ESTMW formation region and the summer sea surface density maximum was also found in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific, implying the importance of sea surface salinity fronts and the associated summer sea surface density maximum to ESTMW formation. Interannual variations of ESTMW reflected that of the winter mixed layer in its formation region, and the thickness of ESTMW was related to the Pacific decadal oscillation. The interannual variation of surface ocean currents can be as large as seasonal variation in the Japan/East Sea (JES). To identify the major factors that cause such interannual variability of surface ocean circulation in the JES, surface circulation was simulated from 1998 to 2009 using a three-dimensional model. Contributions of atmospheric forcing (ATM), open boundary data (OBC), and intrinsic variability (ITV) of the surface flow in the JES on the interannual variability of surface ocean circulation were separately examined using numerical simulations. Variability in surface circulation was quantified in terms of variance in sea surface height, 100-m depth water temperature, and surface currents. ITV was found to be the dominant factor that induced interannual variabilities of surface circulation, the main path of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), and surface kinetic energy on a time scale of 2-4 years. OBC and ATM were secondary factors contributing to the interannual variation of surface circulation. Interannual variation of ATM changed the separation latitude of EKWC and increased the variability of surface circulation in the Ulleung Basin. Interannual variation of OBC enhanced low-frequency changes in surface circulation and eddies in the Yamato Basin. It also modulated basin-wide uniform oscillations of sea level. Frugivores must deal with seasonal changes in fruit availability and changes from year to year, as most species of tropical forest fruiting trees have considerable interannual variation in phenology and many are mast fruiters. We quantified seasonal and interannual changes in the fruit diet in a frugivore and important seed disperser, the white-handed gibbon, Hylobates lar, in Thailand. We used 40-d following data during April and May replicated in six consecutive years to study interannual variability in the diet and compared it with seasonal changes measured in monthly samples of the same size collected in three successive years. The 40-d periods of following also allowed us to measure the decline in dietary similarity with time over a finer scale. We measured fruit diet similarity between replicated 5-d periods using the percentage overlap (Renkonen's) index and Jaccard's similarity index. Seasonally, average dietary overlap between adjacent months was low, and similarity approached zero after four months. Average rate of decline in similarity exceeded 20 percent per 5-d period. Variation in fruit species in the diet between years was high and was correlated with interannual variation in fruiting phenology. The strongest correlation occurred in the case of Nephelium melliferum, a highly preferred species that dominated the diet in good fruiting years. It is difficult to separate changes in food species preference from changes in availability from year to year. Abstract: Salt marshes are sinks for atmospheric carbon dioxide that respond to environmental changes related to sea level rise and climate. Here we assess how climatic variations affect marsh‐atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide in the short term and compare it to long‐term burial rates based on radiometric dating. The 5 years of atmospheric measurements show a strong interannual variation in atmospheric carbon exchange, varying from −104 to −233 g C m−2 a−1 with a mean of −179 ± 32 g C m−2 a−1. Variation in these annual sums was best explained by differences in rainfall early in the growing season. In the two years with below average rainfall in June, both net uptake and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index were less than in the other three years. Measurements in 2016 and 2017 suggest that the mechanism behind this variability may be rainfall decreasing soil salinity which has been shown to strongly control productivity. The net ecosystem carbon balance was determined as burial rate from four sediment cores using radiometric dating and was lower than the net uptake measured by eddy covariance (mean: 110 ± 13 g C m−2 a−1). The difference between these estimates was significant and may be because the atmospheric measurements do not capture lateral carbon fluxes due to tidal exchange. Shallow freshwater aquatic ecosystems are discrete feeding patches for fish eating birds. A unique feature of these ecosystems is that their physical conditions can change dramatically in a short period of time, particularly temperature, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Based on previous research we predicted that increasing turbidity will reduce the availability of fish to birds due to reduced visibility, while increasing temperature and decreasing dissolved oxygen will increase their availability through increases in activity and movement towards the more oxygenated surface areas, respectively. We also predicted that overall abundance of fish should increase feeding activity by terns.We measured these environmental variables, bird activity, and fish abundance from May to August from 2006 to 2008 in a marsh in southern Manitoba, Canada. Our results showed that only variation in dissolved oxygen levels affected feeding activity by terns. Since there was no relationship between bird and fish abundance either within or among years, these results suggest that it is the availability of prey (i.e. the upward movement of fish into the water column) and not their abundance per se that influences the number of avian predators present and hence the risk of predation to fish. These data demonstrate how the physical environment of aquatic ecosystems can impact terrestrial avian predators, and the link that exists between the physical environment and predator-prey interactions. Effects of climate change and nutrient load caused by human activities on lake phytoplankton blooms have attracted much attention globally. However, their roles and synergistic effects on phytoplankton biomass and community historical succession are not well understood, especially for meso-eutrophic plateau lakes. In this study, a multi-year (1997–2022) monthly dataset including hydro-chemical and meteorological indicators of the meso-eutrophic plateau lake Erhai in China, was used to explore the contributions of climate change and nutrients on phytoplankton biomass variation and community succession. Phytoplankton biomass increased from 1997 to 2006, slowly decreased from 2006 to 2015, then increased again from 2015 to 2022, according to a generalised additive model (GAM). Alongside warming, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter are key drivers of long-term interannual variation in phytoplankton biomass and historical succession of the phytoplankton community. The extensive blooms in recent years were strongly associated with both organic matter accumulation and global warming. Phytoplankton biomass in northern and southern districts was greater than in central areas, with Cyanophyta and Pyrrophyta dominating in the north and Chlorophyta prevalent in the south. Since 2015, phytoplankton diversity has increased significantly, and biomass has declined in the southern district but increased markedly in the northern district. Spatial heterogeneity was caused by the spatial distribution of nutrients and the buoyancy regulation capacity of cyanobacteria. The results demonstrate that bloom mitigation responds strongly to nitrogen and phosphorus control in meso-eutrophic lakes, therefore preventing and controlling blooms through nitrogen and phosphorus reduction is still an effective measure. Given the accumulation of organic matter in recent years, synergistic control of organic matter and total nitrogen and phosphorus could effectively reduce the risk of cyanobacterial and dinoflagellate blooms. The launch of the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) satellite has made it possible to observe suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the Bohai Sea (BHS) over a long time and a large area. We utilized remote sensing data from GOCI from 2011 to 2021 to study the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of SSC in the BHS and identified the contribution of each oceanic element to the changes in SSC. Our findings indicate that SSC is high in winter and low in summer, and related to the southeastward winds in winter (>7 m/s) and northwestward winds in summer (<4 m/s), with a correlation coefficient of 0.634. The average annual increase in SSC is 0.07 g/m3 (an increase of 1.2% per year). In terms of spatial distribution, SSC is highest in Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay, followed by the Liaodong Bay, and is greater than that in the Central Bohai Sea, which is related to multiple river estuaries in the three bays. Additionally, the Bohai and Liaodong Bay in the BHS are covered by sea ice during winter, which affects the response of waves and currents to wind and changes the ocean current field, thereby affecting the resuspension and transport of sediment. In this study, we analyzed the interannual variability (IAV) of ET and its responses to environmental conditions at four grassland ecosystems across a wide range of climatic and biome conditions based on the long-term (9–11 years) eddy-covariance measurements. The four ecosystems encompassed the most prevalent grassland vegetations in China, containing a typical temperate steppe, an alpine meadow-steppe, an alpine shrubland meadow, and an alpine marsh meadow. The IAVs of annual ET at the typical temperate steppe and the alpine meadow-steppe were primarily affected by either change in precipitation (P) or relative humidity (RH). Leaf area index (LAI) was the dominant factor controlling the IAVs of annual and growing-season ET at the alpine shrubland meadow, and the IAV of LAI was significantly correlated with P variation. As to the alpine marsh meadow, net radiation turned to be the dominant factor for the IAV of annual ET, additionally with significant effects from water supply condition (P and RH) on the IAV of growing-season ET. Similar environmental responses were also found for the IAVs of mean surface conductance (g s) across the sites. Specifically, annual and growing-season mean g s significantly increased with increases in LAI at the alpine shrubland meadow, and appeared to be more sensitive to changes in water availability and VPD at the typical temperate steppe and the alpine meadow-steppe. Significant linear relationships were also observed among the IAVs of mean Priestley-Taylor coefficient (α = ET/ET eq , where ET eq is the equilibrium evaporation), decoupling coefficient (Ω), and g s on both the annual and growing-season basis in this study. Moreover, the variabilities of annual mean g s , Ω , and α further demonstrated the energy-limited conditions at the alpine marsh meadow, and the overall water-limited conditions at the other three grasslands. This study reveals the divergent environmental responses of long-term ET variations over grassland ecosystems, and contributes to the comprehensive understanding on the ET process and modeling efforts as well. Terrestrial carbon flux shows greater interannual variation (IAV) than the ocean and drives most temporal changes in the atmospheric CO 2 growth rate. Accurate estimation of the interannual variation in the terrestrial carbon budget is crucial for predicting changes in the carbon balance of ecosystems and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations in the context of climate change. However, the interannual variation simulation of the terrestrial carbon budget has considerable uncertainty. One of the important reasons is the neglect of the memory effect of the ecosystem on climate change, namely the potential lagged impact of climate change. In the present work, we integrated meteorological and remote sensing vegetation data and introduced the memory effect into a deep learning model to simulate the global terrestrial net ecosystem exchange (NEE). The conclusions were as follows: (a) Considering the memory effect not only improved the simulation accuracy of the global terrestrial NEE, R2 increased by 0.37–0.55, RMSE decreased by 38.97%–52.42%, and MAE decreased by 39.77%–52.38%, but also improved the simulation accuracy of the interannual variation of NEE, R2 increased by 0.50–0.84, RMSE decreased by 37.13%–72.07%, and MAE decreased by 40.72%–66.49%. (b) The memory effect of NEE varied by ecosystem type, environmental factors, and plant development phase. The response of NEE to precipitation in most ecosystems was slower than that to temperature and radiation. The length of the comprehensive memory effect of NEE on antecedent environmental variables in the non-growth season was longer than that in the growth season. The influences of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the winter rainfall in southern China exhibit prominent interannual variations. In general, when MJO is active over the Indian Ocean (western Pacific), winter rainfall in southern China increases (decreases) substantially; however, it also decreases (increases) significantly in some winters. The anomalous atmospheric circulation, especially the intraseasonal and low-frequency circulation anomalies, like are responsible for these variations. Both the intraseasonal and low-frequency circulation anomalies are almost opposite between wetter and drier winters MJO is active over the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, which leads to the different moisture convergences in southern China. As a result, the influences of MJO over the same region on winter rainfall in southern China are different. When MJO is active over the Indian Ocean, the moisture convergence (divergence) in wetter (drier) winters is dominated primarily by the meridional (zonal) moisture convergence (divergence) and advection. When MJO is active over the western Pacific, in both wetter and drier winters, the anomalous moisture divergence is controlled by the meridional moisture divergence and advection. Therefore, it is not only the location and intensity of MJO activity that are important; the anomalous circulation and moisture on different timescales (in particular the intraseasonal and low-frequency timescales) should be considered in the operational weather forecast when using MJO as a predictor.

Bioassessment assumes that ecological conditions remain stable in the absence of environmental changes. Evidence suggests this assumption may hold for reference streams, but knowledge gaps remain for impacted streams. Our study quantified interannual variation of benthic macroinvertebrate communities, monitored for at least 14 years in eight impacted streams in the Upper Thames River watershed in Ontario, Canada. Benthic communities exhibited moderate interannual variation in relative abundance of EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera) and Chironomidae taxa. Year-to-year changes were reflected in lower community persistence than that observed in studies of reference streams. In contrast, tolerance-based metrics showed minimal interannual variation, suggesting compositional changes were because of taxonomic substitutions, in which one tolerant taxon replaced another. Analyses indicated limited directionality in temporal variation for most bioassessment metrics. An exception was taxa richness, which increased at most sites, possibly because of changes in subsampling. However, no associations between calculated bioassessment metrics and measured environmental factors (stream flow and water chemistry) or sampling procedures were observed. We conclude interannual variation in ecological conditions can be substantial and may not be associated with deterministic factors routinely measured in stream assessments. We recommend increased sampling frequency and traits-based assessment as options for limiting effects of interannual variation on assessment results.

In this study, we use the long-term satellite data to investigate seasonal and interannual variation of low-cloud fraction (LCF) and the associated controlling factors over the eastern and western North Pacific. On the seasonal time scale, the enhanced LCF over the eastern North Pacific in summer is actively coupled with strong estimated inversion strength (EIS) and 700-hPa relative humidity, and the LCF over the western North Pacific in winter is large and mainly caused by increased sensible heat flux and tropospheric low-level cold advection. On the interannual time scale, the increased LCF over the eastern North Pacific in summer is associated with increased EIS and decreased sea surface temperatures, in which the El Niño plays an important role; the enhanced LCF over the western North Pacific in spring and winter has a positive correlation with enhanced sensible heat flux (SHF) and tropospheric low-level cold advection, which can be partly explained by the subpolar frontal zone (SPFZ) intensity.

A significant 6 yr oscillation exists in the length of day (LOD) on the interannual scales. There are mainly two models currently to explain this oscillation, i.e., mantle–inner core gravitational (MICG) coupling mode and the fast torsional waves within the fluid outer core. The former has been doubted, while the source of the excitation of the latter is not yet understood. Therefore, the mechanism of the 6 yr oscillation is still not clear. Here, by considering the mantle and inner core angular momentum, we investigate the MICG coupling mode and its natural period ( T 0 ). Given that the strength of gravitational core–mantle coupling ( Γ ¯ ) within a recently constrained range is quite weaker than that estimated previously, the mechanism of the 6 yr oscillation still can be attributed to MICG coupling mode (i.e., T 0 equals to 6 yrs), but, we require the inertia moment of fluid within the tangent cylinder involved in the 6 yr oscillation to be smaller than 1.23 × 10 35 kg m 2 . This interpretation can be used to constrain the electromagnetic (EM) coupling at the inner core boundary (ICB). In order to study quantitatively the constraints on the EM coupling at the core–mantle boundary (CMB) from the observed 6 yr oscillation with a quality factor Q (∼51.6), we further develop the mathematical expression between the Q value based on the observations and EM coupling at the CMB. According to the Γ ¯ value from recent estimates and assuming that the 6 yr oscillation is in a free decay, we can obtain the radial magnetic field at the CMB is 0.52 mT∼0.62 mT when conductance at the CMB is 10 8 S. The Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM), which occurs during summer in the central Yellow Sea, plays an important role in the hydrodynamic field, nutrient cycle and biological species. Based on water temperature observations during the summer from 1978 to 1998 in the western Yellow Sea, five specific YSCWM years were identified, including two strong years (1984 and 1985), two weak years (1989 and 1995) and one normal year (1992). Using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, the YSCWM formation processes in these five years were simulated and compared with observations. In general, the YSCWM began forming in spring, matured in summer and gradually disappeared in autumn of every year. The 8 °C isotherm was used to indicate the YSCWM boundary. The modelled YSCWM areas in the two strong years were approximately two times larger than those in the two weak years. Based on the simulations in the weak year of 1995, ten numerical experiments were performed to quantify the key factors influencing the YSCWM intensity by changing the initial water condition in the previous autumn, air-sea heat flux, wind, evaporation, precipitation and sea level pressure to those in the strong year of 1984, respectively. The results showed that the air-sea heat flux was the dominant factor influencing the YSCWM intensity, which contributed about 80% of the differences of the YSCWM average water temperature at a depth of 50 m. In addition, the air-sea heat flux in the previous winter had a determining effect, contributing more than 50% of the differences between the strong and weak YSCWM years. Finally, a simple formula for predicting the YSCWM intensity was established by using the key influencing factors, i.e., the sea surface temperature before the cooling season and the air-sea heat flux during the cooling season from the previous December to the current February. With this formula, instead of a complicated numerical model, we were able to roughly predict the YSCWM intensity for the following summer by using the data available online in winter. Long-term datasets of water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate from 1973 to 2013 were used to study interannual variations of these parameters along a transect (section PN) across the Kuroshio and shelf area in the East China Sea. Water temperature and salinity at depths of 0-200 m showed a low-high-low-high pattern over the 40-year period. Water temperature and salinity at 500 m were relatively high from 1985 to 1990 and decreased continuously thereafter. Salinity at 800 m was lowest around 1993 and increased thereafter. Nutrients were highest between 1980 and 1985. After 1985, nutrients at 500 m were increasing. The range of variation in nutrients was large before 1985 and the magnitude increased with greater depths. Apparent oxygen utilization at 500 m depth was decreasing before 1990 and started to increase after 1992. Significant changes after 1990 at 500 m depth may be due to the upward trend of the upper boundary of Kuroshio intermediate water. Interannual variation of water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate along section PN has a significant correlation with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index.
