Alain Dewerpe’s spatialised historical anthropology. During the almost forty years he devoted to the historian’s profession, Alain Dewerpe remained loyal to two major precocupations beyond the other central questions and objects that marked his research. We could even see them as his trademarks : the anthropological approach and the spatial approach to historical phenomena. Both were present from the Tour de France royal, co-authored with Jean Boutier and Daniel Nordman (1984), to the book he was working on when he died, on the workers of Ansaldo from the middle of the19th century to the 1930s (2017). These two closely entwined requirements gave birth to a work in which Dewerpe advanced a series of proposals, two of which are examined here : the protoindustrial proposal, tested in the frame of the genesis of the Italian industrial triangle in the years 1780-1914 ; the factory proposal, outlined with his study of the workers of the factory of Oberkampf in the second half of the 18th century and developed subsequently in his History of Work in France (1989) and the experience of the « big Genoese factory ».

The article examines the main issues of institutionalization, legitimation of sacral power of clergymen of traditional religions of Finno-Ugric Peoples (for example, Mari, Udmurt, Mordovians). On the basis of interdisciplinary approaches of historical anthropology concludes that the clergy during its existence did not form a closed system of classical priesthood, are one of the most unique examples of conservation of autochthonous beliefs of ethnic groups living on the territory of the Middle Volga.

The article discusses one of the modern interdisciplinary approaches to the investigation of personality in history. The author makes an attempt to explain the contradictory behavior of the Roman intellectual Mark Tullius Cicero through the classifying of some behavior patterns and ways of acting in different circumstances. The author focuses on the phenomenon of «religious aspects» and on Cicero’s attitude towards its manifestation within Roman society in the time of the Republic’s decline.

The article attempts to show some shifts at the historiographical fields and emerging of the new directions within the modern historical investigations, namely, a "new cultural history» that became a historical anthropology later. Drawing upon the latter’s techniques an individual, or a group, or a community is being investigated. It is noted that the so-called «emic methods» have given a rise to the study of different types of communities of antiquity, particularly, some informal or alternative associations. The author comes to conclusion that applying the methods of historical anthropology towards the issue of the nature of the Hermetic congregations may contribute to solving many problems related to the core, eclectic nature, as well as to the philosophical and ideological basis of the Hermetic corpus.

The dissertation analyzes the history of the mutual transformation at the origin of the artistic production in New Spain from the 16th to the 17th century onward. Based upon the innovative « triptych » feather art/cartography/graffiti, our corpus allows to interrogate the birth and developments of the Mexican colonial society from very diverse vantage points. The first part of the thesis demonstrates the preponderant place the three identified objects had during the process of the military conquest. The second part studies the role they played during the spiritual and administrative colonization. The third part enlightens the mutual transformation of the artistic languages. The society of the New Spain is studied as a complex web of creative situations which were essential to its growth and vitality. The proposed triptych becomes a multi-laboratory to analyze the pertinence of a mestizo history of the arts, capable to formulate an anthropologic, historic and esthetic frame in order to study the sphere of creation.

The purpose of this work is to study the cognitive interferences philosophical and social sciences and humanities. The aim of the article is to analyze the cognitive interaction of historical anthropology and semiotics in the space of philosophical-cultural concepts Lotman. Methodology. The methodology of this work includes the theoretical approaches, such as system-structural method, interdisciplinary method, comparative and source study methods. Teoretical basis and results. Philosophy of Culture Lotman contains a large number of cognitive dimensions. Significant role in the cognitive universe of his work is semiotics and historical anthropology. However interaction of these semiotic components of Lotman creation little explored yet. The latter applies to the redesign of the historical-anthropological ideas and research scientist. Conclusions. Understanding the interaction of cognitive semiotics and historical anthropology in the space of culture philosophy of Lotman logically leads to the conclusion that the effectiveness of cognitive symbiosis methodological approaches these sciences. In particular, the cognitive structure allows us to study the underlying causes of the motives and actions of individuals and entire societies past. The realization of semiotic, historical and anthropological methods allows us to analyze the underlying mechanisms of the spiritual culture and social and cultural institutions of societies from different historical periods.

Purpose. The aim of this work is the intelligent reconstruction and the analysis of the various methodological approaches to cognitive areas of modern philosophy of history and determines their cognitive and academic relationships with conceptual terms of such branches of historical knowledge as historical anthropology. Methodology. Methodological tools of this work are such scientific approaches as methods of philosophy of science, interdisciplinary approach, methods of source and system analysis. Scientific novelty. Reproduced and analyzed was a number of methodological approaches inherent in the natural sciences and the social - the humanities. The latter, in accordance with the principles of interdisciplinary paradigm, is very widely applied by the modern philosophy of historical knowledge, in particular in the analysis of the historical process and its main elements: the mentality, attitudes and norms of socially significant and personal behavior of individuals and societies of the past. The influence of research on various historical and historical anthropological problems such concepts implanted in the methodology of modern philosophy of history scientific disciplines as chaos theory, synergetics, mathematical biology, ethnology, social psychology, etc. Focuses on intellectual connections are used in the philosophy of history, historical knowledge interdisciplinary methodology, theory and concepts of natural science and social - humanities. They are used to analyze and understand the complex and multifaceted historical events and processes. Conclusions. The result of the analysis of the cognitive dynamics applications in the philosophy of history of conceptual approaches of a very wide range of scientific disciplines has been the allocation of a number of phases of the mining process. Each of them has special logic - methodological and socio cultural characteristics ("Data"). Internal, cognitive science dynamics of this unity was not the aiming at the destruction of the previous intellectual tradition, but its deepening and updating on the basis of the implementation of more effective and diverse methodological approaches.

For most of their millennial history in China, Muslims have established pious endowments called waqfsthat served a variety of functions, including providing land to build mosques. The founding of waqfsradically changed in 1949, when the Communists confiscated land. Recently, a Hui who was performing the hajj in Saudi Arabia discovered a pre-Communist waqfiyya or document that established a waqf in Gansu Province in northwest China. The contemporary Chinese property regime prohibits religious land and hence the waqfiyya is legally void, yet its return afforded the Hui an opportunity to reflect on the relationships between law, lineage, and public goods, laying a foundation for an historical anthropology of Chinese waqfs. Drawing on material from historical Gansu and ethnographic encounters, I argue that whereas shariʿa suffered a kind of “structural death” in China, it does have its own “afterlife,” as illustrated in documents that travel across time and assume new meanings through transnational mobility and memory.

We carried out the detailed anthropological evaluation of human remains from two archaeological sites dating back to the time of the Mongolian invasion of Hungary. In both cases, the bones do not originate from usual burials. The unburied skeletons of one woman and five children were found among buildings at the site Csitári tanya, Bugac-Felsőmonostor. In the other site, Kiskunmajsa-Jonathermal, mixed and partly burnt bones were excavated from two buildings. By means of the anthropological examination, we could distinguish the remains of at least 33 different persons. On some bones of limbs and some fragments, curious cuts were detected. These cuts were similar to those that can be seen in case of animals slaughtered and dressed out for their meat. Contemporary texts do mention the famine and the resulting cannibalism that followed the Mongolian invasion. However, these bones are the first archaeological, anthropological evidence that back this up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The history of the Greek and Albanian settlements in Southern Italy was the result of the migration flows triggered by the Ottoman conquests during the Renaissance. The subsequent retention of local aggregations on ethnic bases has aroused the interest of local historians since the end of the XVIIIth century as well as has cultivated their requests for cultural distinction. In fact, the historical (re)production of Greek and Albanian ethnic grouping has been explained as the effect of an instinct of conservation: of the language (Greek and Albanian), of the Byzantine rite, of homeland customs. Against these interpretations, I argue that the social reproduction of ethnic identification has been made possible by the convergence of two forms of mobilities connected to the market of priest ordinations. The sources produced by the Congregation of the Greeks (1566-1596) and Propaganda Fide (from 1622 onwards) makes it possible to identify the permanence of intermittent (but continuous) visits between Orthodox emissaries traveling throughout the Spanish monarchy's domain and candidates for the sacred orders from the Greek and Albanian settlements dispersed in southern Italy. The making and renewing of relations between Italian clerics of Byzantine rite and Eastern prelates has allowed the «Greek» and «Albanian» ethnonyms to function as operators in social morphogenesis within most of the settlements born from those migrations at least up to the middle of the 18th century. Between 2009 and 2011, there was a dramatic re-emergence in Chennai of a nineteenth century colonial narrative that ‘eunuchs’ kidnap and castrate children. Although often framed as a ‘legend’ by LGBT rights activists and anthropologists, the narrative was cast here as a police complaint, prompting these very activists to initiate a fact-finding mission, of which I was a part. How could a colonial-era narrative emerge as both fact and fiction, law, and legend, so rapidly fit the language of contemporary moral anxieties, such as sex-reassignment surgery and LGBT rights activism? Using M.M. Bakhtin’s concept of ‘genre,’ I demonstrate that narratives of kidnapping, from the early colonial period onward, have circulated in genres ranging from ethnography and medical jurisprudence to fiction and even pornography. As activists in contemporary Chennai weave together past fragments to make their claims, these historical traces are re-animated in indeterminate, unexpected ways. I suggest that by abandoning fixed notions of genre such as ‘folklore’ or ‘law,’ and focusing instead on how texts circulatebetweengenres, scholars can discover the political stakes for participants in the arena of transgender rights movements in India, including folklorists and ethnographers themselves. In El fin del exotismo. Ensayos de Antropología Crítica, Alban Bensa sets forth, from three different vantage points, the concrete nature of anthropological practice while, at the same time, criticizing several "narrative leaps" that have distracted so much of anthropology. First, he advocates for an engaged anthropology that is consubstantial with time and the circumstances of anthropological subjects, arguing that only in this way can we put an end to exoticism. Second, he expounds on the relational methodology of Gregory Bateson with its focus on the contextual categories of behavior and their communicative and cultural- historical organization. Through the examination of the processes of communicative contextual configuration, the structural focus on codified representations and their transformations is critically questioned. Finally, the author postulates a post-Boasian historical particularism concerned with complexity and heterogeneity, but sensitive to broader human processes and their diverse developments in practice. The 'law and ...' field of legal scholarship verges on consensus about the co-constitution between law and nearly everything else. Co-constitution raises questions about how to differentiate law from other things. The contemporary turn from words towards the material brings fresh perspective on these questions by suggesting that law's differentiation is fabricated through materiality. This article considers whether and how material techniques that differentiate law might fabricate the difference of a thing not commonly understood by Western law as law. Its focus is an object created in Haida Gwaii in the late nineteenth century and now displayed in the British Museum. It shows that while techniques common to Western law differentiate this thing, competing materialities are also at work. Furthermore, jurisdictional choices are embedded in the fabrication of this thing's difference. Understanding law as differentiated materially does not escape the social and jurisdictional forces that underpin how the matter of law comes to matter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article attempts to analyze the state of coverage of the history of the anti– fascist Resistance movement in Ukraine through the prism of historical anthropology. It is noted that historical anthropology is one of the most promising directions for further research on the history of the people’s struggle against the occupiers, since it transfers the attention of scientists from the history of events to the history of personalities, focuses on interpersonal and inter–group interaction. Studies in this area were begun by Soviet historians who studied everyday life, material and medical support, cultural and educational activities in partisan detachments. Their business was continued by modern domestic scientists. It is emphasized that in the 20th and 21st centuries the importance of audiovisual information transfer (cinema, television, cartography, graphic and poster art, photography) increased. There was an audiovisual anthropology, within which historical reality began to be reinterpreted from the standpoint of audiovisual perception, in the context of the history of images. It is established that active development of a new phenomenon has already begun in Ukraine. Objects of research interest have already become song writing and anti–fascist folklore, photo documents, maps, bophones, awards, posters, postcards, woodcuts, death letters, graffiti on prison walls etc. In the framework of the «anthropological turnaround» issues related to the activities of the Soviet partisans and the UPA soldiers are better studied. Detailed coverage through the prism of the historical anthropology of the Armia Krajowa, the Jewish Resistance, civil resistance remains a matter of the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article explores the sociopsychological considerations made by Polish sociologist Stanisław Ossowski (1897-1963) during World War II in reaction to his specific experiences in Soviet-occupied Lwów and German-occupied Warsaw. Based on readings of Ossowski’s publications and so far unpublished archival material, the influences and practical consequences of permanently observed violations of ethical and moral boundaries in that “great sociological laboratory” of war and occupation shall be traced in the texts he wrote during that time. As a member of a group of engineers, town planners, and architects, Ossowski sketched various psycho- and sociotechnical means of controlling that should guarantee for a peaceful social existence of free individuals in a new Polish state. Particular attention will be directed to the specific difficulties of attaining, communicating, and distributing knowledge in the de facto doubled cities that developed along the lines of opposition between the occupying and the occupied. Attending to the production and reception of critique produced by anthropologists’ interlocutors, in the field and in the archives, can help shore up the project of critical ethnography called for by Didier Fassin. A comparison of two moments of critique initiated by Fayiz Sayigh on behalf of Palestinians struggling against Israeli colonialism highlights the ways that the same kinds of critique of power gain traction in different institutional and historical contexts. The expansion of critical ethnography to include a historical ethnography of critique itself, tracing the effects of critique or its dissipation in the past, would yield further insights into the nature and power (or weakness) of the practice of critique today. Azfar Moin's The Millennial Sovereign: Sacred Kingship and Sainthood in Islam prompts a consideration not only of the histories of Islam and early modern connected histories of Central and South Asia, but also of current debates about local and global history-writing. Moin's work intersects with a strand of comparative world history-following Victor Lieberman's Strange Parallels-but also engages strands of historical anthropology, bringing to light a range of compelling stakes for global historians, historians of South Asia, and scholars of nationalism alike. Though Moin's work pushes the boundaries of connected histories centered on South Asia, his focus on a trans-regional millennial science avoids questions of the local within new global histories. The purpose of the work is to study the impact of geographical, social and cultural context, mentality character-istics of historical process of society on the origin and characteristics of the development of intellectual achieve-ment, namely philosophy and science. The purpose of the article is to understand natural, historical, cultural, social and psychological aspects that led to the genesis of cognitive development peculiarities of ancient Greek philosophy of scientific knowledge. Methodology. Methodology of the work contains such cognitive approaches as systematic and structural ones, source study and post-positivist concepts, the theory of local civilizations. Theoretical basis and results: the novelty of this work is in studying the diverse factors that determined the emergence and dynamics of ancient Greek philosophical thought and science as a whole system of interrelated elements. The influence on the genesis of philosophy and science of ancient Hellas, its geographical conditions and geopolitical situation as well as the cultural dialogue with surrounding civilizations, the reception of historical and cultural experience of the previ-ous Hellenic civilization, historical process and mentality of ancient Greeks have been analyzed. Conclusions: the whole cluster of the above mentioned factors had a profound and multi-directional influence on the formation and development of Greek philosophy and science. In addition, each of the factors influenced the original intellectual achievements of Greeks. In particular, the influence of natural factors realized in the formation of skills in the men-tality of ancient Greeks has become a prerequisite for philosophizing and scientific knowledge. Geo-political, social and cultural factors have contributed to the geographical expansion of ancient Greeks and their information acquisi-tion about the world. Through the dialogue with other eastern and Mediterranean cultures Greeks mastered intellec-tually rich and meaningful experience of a number of great civilizations. The precursor forms of intellectual activity have played a significant role in the genesis of ancient Greek philosophy and science. Synergy interaction of these factors has led to rapid development of philosophy and science of ancient Hellas.

Цель. Проблемой данной работы является изучение воздействия географического и социокультурного контекста, особенностей ментальности исторического процесса социума на зарождение и характерные черты развития интеллектуальных достижений, в частности, философии и науки. Цель статьи заключается в осмыслении совокупности природных, исторических, культурных, социально-психологических факторов, которые обусловили генезис особенности когнитивного развития древнегреческой философии научного познания. Методология. Методология данной работы содержит познавательные подходы: системно-структурный, источниковедческий и постпозитивистский концепты, теория локальных цивилизаций. Научная новизна. Новизна данной работы заключается в исследовании разнородных факторов, предопределивших возникновение и динамику древнегреческих философской мысли и науки как целостной системы взаимосвязанных элементов. Проанализировано влияние на генезис философии и науки древней Эллады ее географических условий, геополитического положения, культурного диалога с окружающими цивилизациями, рецепции исторического и культурного опыта предыдущей эллинской цивилизации, исторического процесса и ментальности древних эллинов. Выводы. Весь кластер указанных выше факторов оказал глубокое и разнонаправленное влияние на становление и развитие древнегреческих философии и науки. При этом каждый из факторов проявил оригинальное воздействие на интеллектуальные достижения эллинов. В частности, влияние природных факторов реализовалось в формировании в ментальности древних греков навыков, ставших предпосылкой философствования и научного познания. Геополитический и социокультурный факторы способствовали географической экспансии древних греков и получение ими разнообразной информации об окружающем мире. Благодаря диалогу с другими культурами Средиземноморья и Востока эллины освоили интеллектуально богатый и содержательный опыт целого ряда великих цивилизаций. Значительную роль в генезисе древнегреческой философии и науки сыграли предшествующие им формы интеллектуальной деятельности. Синергия взаимодействия данных факторов обусловила возникновение и интенсивное развитие философия и науки деревней Эллады.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of theoretical approaches to the philosophical concepts of culture M. M. Bakhtin on the genesis and implementation of historical and anthropological concepts and renovations mentality and socio-cultural characteristics and behavior of individuals and societies of the past. Methodology. Methodological tools are methods of system and source analyses. Theoretical basis and results: analyzes the concept of the philosophy of culture such M.M. Bakhtin as a carnival, folk culture, culture of humor, doubleworld, concept social-cultural projection material and cultural bottom and its impact on the culture of laughter European Middle Ages and Renaissance. Methodological approaches Bakhtin recreated for historical and anthropological reconstruction mentality and socio-cultural realities of the high Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Investigated the perception of philosophical and cultural concepts M. M. Bakhtin, the scientific community and their impact on the historical and anthropological studies. It was also analyzed the influence of the respective ideas M.M. Bakhtin's historical and anthropological studies of the last quarter of XX - beginning of XXI century. in particular on the work of D. Likhachev, A. Gurevich, E. Thompson and other researchers. Conclusion: concept of the philosophy of culture, MM Bakhtin, in particular, the culture of humor, the popular perception of the world, carnival, social and cultural doubleworld, reconstruction of the domestic foundations of culture laughter Europe era high Middle Ages and the Renaissance were one of the most important conceptual elements in the study of the mentality of socially significant behavior and daily life as these periods, so or any other, from the early Middle Ages to the present.

This paper focuses on aspects of medieval literature which draw on image studies. The aim is to review some of those aspects starting with the works of historians, such as Jacques Le Goff and Georges Duby, which have inspired medieval studies from the standpoint of what is nowadays known as “historical anthropology”, as well as the system of anthropological structures of the imaginary set up by Gilbert Durand from which a vast and rich criticism of medieval imaginary has developed. The suggestions of Jean-Claude Schmitt opened the way to further works which proved to be as fruitful: taking a strong interest in the “body of images” (“corps des images”), Schmitt has at times turned to art history in search for his materials of study from which he has drawn some of his most suggestive insights on medieval history and culture. The rhetoric turn, specifically, the new interest in “images of thought” springing from Mary Carruthers’ and Jan Ziolkowski’s recent works has led medieval scholars to focus on the text as an art (téchné or “craft of thought”).

Only a little while has passed since the death of Professor Paul H. Stahl. These lines are an attempt at a synthetic presentation of his life and scientific activity, including short fragments from his memories related to the fieldwork he conducted in his early life, most of the times together with his friend and collaborator, Paul Petrescu. At the same time, being well acquainted with his ethnological and sociological views, as a former student of Paul H. Stahl at the EHESS in Paris, I have sought to capture some of the theoretical dimensions of his activity, insisting first of all on his important contribution to a European anthropology of premodern forms of property and organization of social groups. Within this European analytical and contrastive framework, I have also integrated the Romanian case, to which the late professor Paul H. Stahl was so attached. Secondly, I outlined several directions of analysis of what we could call anthropology of the sacred, the way in which the sacred forms an important dimension of social organization in European peasant societies.

Since Edward W. Said's Orientalism, many polemics on the role of European philologies in cultural reflection have emerged. A point missed so far in this debate is the historical fact that imperial universalism had entered a crisis already shortly after the French Revolution, and not only in the Romantic rejection of its French variant. Alongside this existed attempts to mediate between the force of the universal legal claim and the diversity of the world. Both G. W. F. Hegel and Wilhelm von Humboldt clearly represent this position, but while Hegel unsentimentally observes the disappearance of non-European languages and cultures in historical progress, Humboldt lucidly foresees the danger of a monotonization of the world, and tries to establish a dialogical approach which does not neutralize the 'other' as always also the same. This is where the possibility of thinking a more diverse modernity finds its historical depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present article aims to examine the Black Sea / Kuban Cossacks' songs as one of the most important historical sources, which allows us to understand the important aspects of the history of the North Caucasus Ukrainian people'. This is primarily due to the new challenges needed to study the evolution of their identity, certain features of the mentality, and "survival strategies" characteristic for the Ukrainian population in the region. New questions put by historians require expansion of sources where song tradition, folklore, etc., can become invaluable material for comprehension and interpretation of the new understanding of the history process. The authors have based on the fact that in recent times there have been a fundamental change of attitude towards scientific issues and accordingly to sources, which scientists were based on. Strict approaches and requirements to sources which historians relied on during the period of "positivism" have become much more flexible and spread to the analysis of art, culture and folklore of certain social groups and historical periods. It has become possible to find new approaches to solving problems of scientific research and expand the range of issues which can already be answered. One of the unexplored phenomena, yet barely covered in the domestic science is the history of Ukrainian communities of the North Caucasus (Kuban) area. The authors propose to consider the peculiarities of mentality of this community through the prism of song tradition of the Black Sea / Kuban Cossacks that played a crucial role in all spheres of life. Besides, the features of song traditions of Ukrainian Cossacks (worth noting the important role of folk choreographic culture - Cossack dance) which react very quickly to current events of certain historical periods allows us to consider it as a very important indicator of community' response to new circumstances (social, economic, ideological) in which the community was. The approach enables us to view features of "history of mentalities" of the Ukrainian community in the region much more than focusing on official documents and political declarations. In the article the basic aspects of choreographic art are examined in the historical aspect of ХУІІІ-ХХ of centuries. The basic aspects of concrete types of dances as reaction and ritual forms of self-expression are examined in a concrete period of historical development. Such approach gives an opportunity to understand change in perception of society of historical changes of concrete historical epoch and self-expression that is passed including through dance to us. In the article the process of evolution of choreographic art, as display of adaptation of task forces, is examined to the change of historical processes and, simultaneously their influence on the further evolution of historical development.
