Freshwater mussels fulfill an important ecological role in aquatic ecosystems, but they currently face many threats, including thermal regime alteration. Thermal transformation of the aquatic environment is associated with climate change, land use alteration, and other pervasive anthropogenic global changes. To enhance our understanding of ecological thermal impacts, we combined extensive field measurements of temperature in the stream water column and substrate depths (5 and 15 cm) at sites where mussels occur, measures of abundance and species richness for mussels and fish, and thermal tolerance knowledge for mussels and fish to generate a comprehensive assessment of the potential threats mussels face as temperatures continue to rise as a result of global change. Mean summer (June–August 2010–2012) temperatures at mussel-occupied sites in the upper Tar River basin of North Carolina, USA, ranged from 16.2 to 34.7 °C. The mean temperature from the hottest 96 h at each site ranged from 23.5 to 31.5 °C. At 80% of sites, a period of moderate drought coincided with the hottest 96 h period. Temperature threshold exceedance durations indicated that chronic, combined chronic/acute, and acute freshwater mussel thermal tolerance thresholds (i.e., 28 °C, 30 °C, and 33 °C, respectively) based on laboratory exposures of glochidia (larvae) and juveniles were commonly exceeded. Water temperatures exceeded 28 °C for at least 24 h at 55% of sites and for at least 96 h at 35% of sites, and they exceeded 30 °C for at least 24 h at 15% of sites. We quantified a thermal buffering effect of the substrate that may be protective of mussels. There was a mean difference of 0.5 °C between the water column and the upper substrate (5 cm) and a mean difference of 0.9 °C between the water column and the lower substrate (15 cm). Maximum differences of up to 5.5 °C between the water column and the upper substrate and 11.5 °C between the water column and the lower substrate were observed. Our models estimating the relation between the water column and substrate temperatures more realistically characterize ambient temperature exposures and have widespread implications for mussel conservation and climate change risk assessment in similar streams. Freshwater mussels currently exist on the edge of their thermal limits, but their abundance and species richness cannot be explained by temperature patterns alone. Frequent and strong morphological convergence suggests that determinism tends to supersede historical contingencies in evolutionary radiations. For many lineages living within the water column of rivers and streams, hydrodynamic forces drive widespread morphological convergence. Living below the sediment-water interface may release organisms from these hydrodynamic pressures, permitting a broad array of morphologies, and thus less convergence. However, we show here that the semi-infaunal freshwater mussels have environmentally determined convergence in shell morphology. Using 3D morphometric data from 715 individuals among 164 Nearctic species, we find that species occurring in rivers with high flow rates have evolved traits that resist dislodgement from their burrowed position in the streambed: thicker shells for their body size, with the thickest sector of the shell being the most deeply buried. Species occurring in low flow environments have evolved thinner and more uniformly thickened shells, corresponding to an alternative adaptation to dislodgement: increased burrowing efficiency. Within species, individuals also show increased shell thickness for their body size at higher flow rates, suggesting that ecophenotypy may, in part, be an important mechanism for establishing populations in new environments and thus evolutionary divergence in this highly imperiledinvertebrate group. Characterizing the mechanisms influencing the distribution of genetic variation in aquatic species can be difficult due to the dynamic nature of hydrological landscapes. In North America's Central Highlands, a complex history of glacial dynamics, long-term isolation, and secondary contact have shaped genetic variation in aquatic species. Although the effects of glacial history have been demonstrated in many taxa, responses are often lineage- or species-specific and driven by organismal ecology. In this study, we reconstruct the evolutionary history of a freshwater mussel species complex using a suite of mitochondrial and nuclear loci to resolve taxonomic and demographic uncertainties. Our findings do not support Pleurobema rubrum as a valid species, which is proposed for listing as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. We synonymize P. rubrum under Pleurobema sintoxia —a common and widespread species found throughout the Mississippi River Basin. Further investigation of patterns of genetic variation in P. sintoxia identified a complex demographic history, including ancestral vicariance and secondary contact, within the Eastern Highlands. We hypothesize these patterns were shaped by ancestral vicariance driven by the formation of Lake Green and subsequent secondary contact after the last glacial maximum. Our inference aligns with demographic histories observed in other aquatic taxa in the region and mirrors patterns of genetic variation of a freshwater fish species (Erimystax dissimilis) confirmed to serve as a parasitic larval host for P. sintoxia. Our findings directly link species ecology to observed patterns of genetic variation and may have significant implications for future conservation and recovery actions of freshwater mussels. The aim of this study was to determine by SEM-EDS analysis of the surface morphologies of the periostracum and nacreous layer and to determine the sodium (Na), Strontium (Sr), manganese (Mn), potassium (K), titanium (Ti), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) metals levels in the shells of the mussel (Potomida semirugata, Unio terminalis, Anodonta pseudodopsis and Leguminaia wheatleyi) obtained from Gölbaşı Lake, Turkey. The results of the study, the representative SEM analysis and corresponding EDS spectra of the periostracum and nacreous layer of the shells of freshwater mussels confirmed the presence of elemental compositions, including CaCO3. P. semirugata and U. terminalis have the aragonite prismatic layer that shows typical polygonal organizing, regular and polygonal crystal forms, with hexagonal and coexisting rhombic shapes. However, while A. pseudodopsis has round aragonite crystals (Rc), L. wheatleyi has irregular crystal plate layers (Irc). CaCO3, detected strong Ca peaks as well as C and O peaks with Mg and Si peaks. On the other hand, sodium (Na) was found in the highest concentrations ranging from 82.30±0.040 to 155.37±0.050 µg/g, and its concentrations were also higher than those of other metals in all species. The most abundant elements in shells of four freshwater mussel's species were Sr, Na, and Mn which ranged from 26.07±0.44-58.023±0.52 µg/g, 82.30±0.040-155.37±0.050 µg/g, and 6.06±0.044-9.66±0.053 µg/g respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first study in Turkey that is researched the different four freshwater mussel species in the Gölbaşı Lake, Turkey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater mussels (order Unionida) are a popular group for a wide array of non‐taxonomic research driven by questions related to their functions in ecosystems, to relationships among species, to biogeochemical and morphometric patterns of certain species and others. Valid taxonomy and correct species identification are key requirements for all of these aspects. However, species‐level identification of representatives from this group is a rather complicated task and should be based on an integrative approach, combining DNA sequences, morphological and anatomical investigation and biogeographical estimates.This article reconsiders a selection of non‐taxonomic scientific works (N = 25), containing misidentified occurrences of freshwater mussel species. The dataset contains records of the endangered Margaritifera margaritifera (endemic to eastern North America and Europe) from the Philippines and West Africa, as well as occurrences of the Nearctic Gonidea angulata from West Africa and the Middle East. Several Palearctic and Nearctic unionid species were erroneously reported from the Indus River, Pakistan. Subfossil shells of the native Simpsonella sp. from a prehistoric site in the Philippines were misidentified as the invasive Sinanodonta woodiana that was introduced to the islands in the 20th century. Samples of the tropical lineage of S. woodiana from Indonesia were mistaken for the native Pilsbryoconcha exilis, and vice versa. Salinity tolerance and morphometric characteristics of the estuarine clam Geloina sp. (Cyrenidae) from Sumatra were examined, but these data were published as belonging to the strictly freshwater S. woodiana.It is clear that this information, being reused by researchers, conservationists and stakeholders, will lead to incorrect conclusions on the range, status, biogeochemistry, morphometry and ecological tolerance of certain freshwater mussel taxa, including invasive and endangered species (the so‐called 'error cascades' in biological sciences caused by 'bad taxonomy').To reduce the growing body of literature containing misidentifications of the Unionida taxa, practical recommendations are proposed for researchers, who include freshwater mussels in non‐taxonomic surveys, as well as for journal editors dealing with articles that focus on these animals. The use of traditional in situ methods for underwater surveys to map freshwater mussel habitats is limited by challenges such as water transparency, depth and high labour demands. In this study, adaptive resolution imaging sonar (ARIS) was applied to monitor mussel distribution and abundance.In contrast to conventional quadrat surveys, this acoustic survey is non‐invasive and enables direct observation of mussels to allow their survival status to be determined in turbid water. ARIS produces high‐quality acoustic images that facilitate the creation of a distribution map for broader‐scale monitoring, especially if paired with deep learning methods such as the YOLOv4 algorithm for automatic mussel detection and classification.ARIS was successfully applied to surveying over 2000 m2 of Lake Izunuma in Miyagi, Japan. In one site, a high mussel abundance of ~0.6 individuals/m2 was detected, while other sites had low densities. The detection model achieved a mean average precision of 0.97.The survey results were used to generate a distribution map of living mussels. This study explores the utilisation of European freshwater mussels as hosts by the European bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) at their current sympatric occurrence range. Our study confirms Pseudanodonta complanata as a suitable, occasional host for bitterling. The spawning relationship of R. amarus with freshwater mussels has physiological costs for the hosts, leading to resource competition and potential negative effects on host fertility. Further research is needed to assess the dynamics of host-parasite interactions, mussel adaptations to prevent parasitism, and the consequences of the bitterling recent and possible future expansion in Europe for mussel populations. The alien freshwater mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) has rapidly spread throughout Europe over the past decades. This species can cope with a broad range of environmental conditions and has a high reproductive capacity making S. woodiana a successful invader. Due to its negative effects on native freshwater mollusk communities and parasitized fish it is critical to identify suitable habitats where S. woodiana may persist and how these habitats may be altered under future climate projections. We applied multivariate ordination methods to analyze the space-time relationship and a maximum entropy approach (MaxEnt) to predict the recent (1970-2000) and future (2041-2060 and 2081-2100) distribution of S. woodiana using environmental and climate variables for the European continent. After first sightings in 1979 there were only a few new locations and findings which increased unevenly and exponentially to a maximum of about 100 new locations per year followed by decline during the last few years. Under recent climate condition, 2.3% of European watersheds are predicted as highly suitable habitat for S. woodiana and located in the temperate climate zone between 40°N and 60°N. Suitable habitat was associated with lowland watersheds characterized by fluviatile deposits and agriculture. Elevation, the distance between water bodies, land cover and mean temperature of the coldest quarter were the main factors influencing the modeling results. For future climate scenarios, highly suitable habitat increased to 2.4% by the middle of this century and decreased to 2.2% by the end of the century under the 'least radiative forcing' scenario. For the intermediate and high radiative forcing in 2050 and 2100, highly suitable habitat decreased to 2.2% and 1.7% and to 2.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Results from our study can be used as a baseline to better understand potential invasion pathways, identify high risk areas, and to initiate early detection and rapid response strategies. Recruitment failure is a major threat to freshwater mussel (Order Unionida) populations worldwide. Assessments of the recruitment status and determining the bottleneck factors of mussel recruitment are crucial for preventing future declines in mussel populations. In this study, we investigated the recruitment status (i.e., size structure and the proportion of juveniles within a population) of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera laevis in 22 rivers, represented by two reaches at one study site, in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan. We also quantified the density of the host fish Oncorhynchus masou masou and examined the relationship between the proportion of juveniles and host-fish density to assess host-limitation threats to M. laevis recruitment. Our assessments showed that 13 (59.1%) sites had no signs of recent recruitment within 10 years, with a low mean proportion of juveniles [mean: 0.02 (range 0.00–0.09) fraction], indicating that these populations are threatened by sustained recruitment failure. The proportion of juveniles was positively associated with host-fish density, suggesting that host-fish limitation could be a bottleneck factor for M. laevis recruitment. These results highlight the urgent need for prompt conservation measures, including the enhancement of host-fish availability, to sustain M. laevis populations in the study region. Microeukaryotes are a diverse and often overlooked group of microbes that are important in food webs and other ecological linkages. Little is known about microeukaryotes associated with aquatic invertebrates, although filter feeders such as mussels are likely to take in and potentially retain microeukaryotes in their gut while feeding. Microeukaryotes such as apicomplexans have been reported in marine mussel species, but no studies have examined the presence of these microorganisms in freshwater mussels or how they relate to mussel host species or environmental conditions. In this study, microbial community DNA was extracted from the gut tissue of over 300 freshwater mussels, representing 22 species collected from rivers in the southeastern USA. Microeukaryote DNA was detected using PCR amplification, followed by the sequencing of positive amplicons. Microeukaryotes were found in 167 individual mussels (53%) of those tested. Amplicons included dinoflagellates/algae that differed between mussel species and are likely food sources that were distinct from those found in water and sediment samples analyzed concurrently. A total of 5% of the positive amplicons were non-photosynthetic alveolates that could represent parasitic microeukaryotes. Understanding the distribution of microeukaryotes in the freshwater mussel gut microbiome could further our understanding of the ongoing decline of mussel populations.

Abstract North American freshwater mussels are of special conservation concern due to their high endemism and the multiple anthropogenic stressors affecting them. Of the over 300 species in North America, nearly one third of these species are federally listed as threatened or endangered. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis has been successful in detecting freshwater mussels and could aid in monitoring their populations. Production and degradation rates of eDNA for the species of interest are needed to inform interpretation of eDNA detections, allow possible modeling of relative abundance and population location, and aid in mussel conservation through population identification. Here, we designed and tested qPCR assays for three freshwater mussel species, mucket (Ortmanniana ligamentina), fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea), and the federally endangered spectaclecase (Cumberlandia monodonta). We performed laboratory experiments under controlled conditions to measure eDNA shedding and degradation rates for each species. Different biomasses, temperatures, and food regimens were tested independently to determine if these factors influence the amount of DNA produced by the mussels. Degradation rates of eDNA were measured from experimental tank water after mussels were removed. Overall, we observed low eDNA shedding rates for freshwater mussels compared to previous studies of fish eDNA shedding rates. Furthermore, temperature and feeding showed limited or no significant effects in the species studied. Environmental DNA degradation rates were consistent with those reported in the literature for other taxa. Collectively, our results will be useful for designing eDNA monitoring studies, modeling eDNA dispersal, and interpreting eDNA results to help inform freshwater mussel conservation efforts.

Abstract Human impacts on aquatic ecosystems have resulted in systemic declines of global freshwater species abundance and richness. Conservation and governmental groups worldwide have designated protected areas to preserve the remaining diversity. The biodiversity hotspot approach, which designates areas based on high levels of species richness, has been useful for identifying areas to protect both terrestrial and aquatic species. However, for freshwater species, additional approaches are warranted to identify specific stream reaches for protection and/or restoration. To address this issue, we present a methodology to create a Gridded River Identification System (GRIS) for river segments based on 30 arc‐second grids (~0.9 km) using the USGS National Hydrography High Resolution Dataset. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, we obtained occurrence data for six imperiled freshwater mussel species in Texas and created ensemble species distribution models (ESDMs) based on climate and topographical variables. Predicted occupancies were overlayed onto the GRIS in Texas. The predicted occupancies were rank ordered from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest probability of occupancy and 5 being the greatest. The rank‐ordered segments were then used to identify reaches for conservation and restoration activities. Our approach is novel and widely applicable to other freshwater species so long as distribution information is available. The GRIS can also be easily developed for stream systems outside of the current study area. Future studies could build upon our framework by incorporating additional taxa data and projected changes in climate and land use.

The thick-shelled river mussel, Unio crassus Philipson, 1788, is considered to be one of the species with the highest conservation priority in Serbia. The study represents the first comprehensive research of the distribution of U. crassus in Serbian waters. The research covered a variety of waterbody types throughout Serbia, and distribution data were considered over three time periods from 1953 to 2019. The paper summarizes all the available literature data, field research and information obtained during the review of the collection of malacological material of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade. The results show a positive population trend, which is reflected in an extension of the distribution area and an increase in population density. After reviewing the museum collection, 13 synonyms for U. crassus were identified. The study also revealed a better insight into the habitat requirements and the limiting factors of the species. Substrate characteristics, waterbody types, altitude, and nitrate content of the water seem to be of great importance for the occurrence of the species. The results presented here can improve further measures for the conservation of U. crassus, not only in Serbia, but also in the Western Balkans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plastic-based contamination has become a major cause of concern as it pervades many environments such as air, water, sediments, and soils. This study sought to examine the presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in freshwater mussels placed at rainfall/street runoff overflows, downstream (15 km) of the city centre of Montréal, and 8 km downstream of a municipal effluent dispersion plume. MPs and NPs were determined using flow cytometry and size exclusion chromatography using fluorescence detection. Following 3 months of exposure during the summer season, mussels contained elevated amounts of both MPs and NPs. The rainfall overflow and downstream of the city centre were the most contaminated sites. Lipid peroxidation, metallothioneins, and protein aggregates (amyloids) were significantly increased at the most contaminated sites and were significantly correlated with NPs in tissues. Based on the levels of MPs and NPs in mussels exposed to municipal effluent, wastewater treatment plants appear to mitigate plastic contamination albeit not completely. In conclusion, the data support the hypothesis that mussels placed in urbanized areas are more contaminated by plastics, which are associated with oxidative damage. The highest responses observed at the overflow site suggest that tire wear and/or asphalt (road) erosion MPs/NPs represent important sources of contamination for the aquatic biota. Freshwater mussels are both critically important in their ecosystems and rapidly declining around the world. Damming is a key reason for this decline in many locations because it affects the flow and turbidity of river systems, leading to numerous detrimental effects on benthic communities. Although the ecological effects of impoundment have been well studied on timescales ranging from years to decades, the ecological effects of impoundment on longer (50–100 years) timescales are less well understood, with a key question being: how long after the building of dams and impoundments do we expect community structure to continue changing? In this study, we explore historical changes in the freshwater mussel assemblages in Kentucky Lake (dammed in 1944) using decades-long collections housed at Murray State University in combination with other historical records. After digitizing these collections and applying a robust rarefaction protocol to account for uneven sampling, we quantify changes in unionid assemblage structure alongside coeval water quality data collected through the Kentucky Lake Long-Term Monitoring Program. We find that subsampled richness exhibited declines after dam construction with losses among opportunistic taxa, channelization-tolerant taxa, and impoundment-intolerant taxa. We also find increases in the proportions of equilibrium taxa throughout the dataset. Overall, the assemblage composition reached an equilibrium by the year 2000 (50 years after impoundment). In concert, river water quality data show a decline in turbidity and increase in light penetration in the period 1988–2020. Although the geohistorical records treated in this study are patchy in time, we argue that they are nonetheless valuable and illustrate that freshwater ecosystems may serve as potential sites of restoration decades after anthropogenic disturbance. In turn, this emphasizes the importance of geohistorical collections to studying long-term changes in community structure and developing strategies for conservation and environmental remediation. Freshwater mussels are globally imperilled, which is attributed to their sensitivity to changes in streamflow and temperature. The Black River in south‐eastern New Mexico, USA, harbours a stronghold population of the federally endangered unionid Popenaias popeii (Texas hornshell). Decreasing discharge and elevated water temperatures are considered the primary factors responsible for the species' decline. However, the impact of these factors has not been quantified directly, which may hinder conservation efforts.The upper thermal tolerances (LT05 and LT50) of Black River P. popeii larvae (glochidia) and newly transformed juveniles were evaluated. Individuals were acclimated to 27°C and then immersed at five experimental temperatures (28, 30, 32, 34 and 36°C) for 24 h (glochidia) or 96 h (juveniles). The thermal tolerances of P. popeii and its presumed host fishes were then overlain onto in situ water temperature and discharge data to determine thermal exceedances in the past 15 years. Temperature was hindcast back to 2007 using machine learning (random forest model) and coupled with discharge.For glochidia, LT05 was exceeded frequently (41%) and LT50 was exceeded occasionally (13%) during spring and summer periods, whereas juvenile thresholds were never exceeded. Upper continuous duration above threshold (UCAT) analysis revealed periods of catastrophic high temperature, which were used to determine discharge bottlenecks.This study demonstrates how laboratory‐derived physiological thresholds can be used in conjunction with environmental data to evaluate the hydrological needs of aquatic organisms, which is useful in efforts to maintain flow regimes that protect native ecosystems. The Hudson River, New York, was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from two manufacturing plants over a period of approximately 30 years, and PCBs are still present in sediment and biota today. The river provides habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including native freshwater mussels. A remediation programme, consisting of dredging followed by the placement of backfilled sediment and/or a subaqueous cap, was initiated in 2009 to remove PCB‐contaminated sediments, and managers were concerned about how remediation could affect the mussels.Quantitative surveys were conducted across nine reaches (pools) to estimate species composition, density, population size, population structure, and ecosystem services of mussel assemblages, pre‐ and post‐remediation. Surveys were stratified into remediated areas (targeted for dredging) and non‐remediated areas (not targeted for dredging).Pre‐remediation, the river contained a low diversity, and high, but variable, density of mussels that were strongly dominated by Elliptio complanata. The presence of few fresh dead mussels indicates low natural mortality. Frequent recruitment by many species, varied length classes, and high biomass also support robust assemblages that perform important ecosystem services, such as biofiltration.Remedial activity removed most of the mussels and the associated services that they perform: their density was reduced by 83% and their filtration capacity was reduced by 93%, relative to non‐remediated areas. Areas that were remediated were almost devoid of adult mussels, but the presence of small mussels indicates that natural recolonization is occurring. However, it is unknown whether these assemblages will persist. As mussels are generally long lived and slow growing, natural recovery is anticipated to be slow, in the order of decades. Background: Leeches are an integral component of aquatic biocenosis and can be found in a wide range of ecosystems such as freshwater, saltwater, flowing, and still-water ecosystems. It especially plays an important role in the freshwater benthic community and is an important part of the food web. In this study, a leech species was found in the mantle cavity of wild freshwater mussels in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, China, and its identity was determined through morphological analysis and molecular biological analysis. Results: The leech is Hemiclepsis khankiana, a new species of Hemiclepsis that has been discovered in Russia in recent years. Through morphological analysis, the current survey observed that the morphological characteristics of Hemiclepsis khankiana eyespots were significantly different from the first reported description. The first pair of eyespots on the leech were separated and clear, while it had been reduced to unclear shadows in the previous report. The phylogenetic tree based on the COI gene showed that the COI gene sequence obtained in this study was in the same evolutionary branch as Hemiclepsis khankiana (MN295420, MN295421). Genetically, it was most closely related to Hemiclepsis kasmiana (mean COI p-distance = 3.98%). Conclusions: The current study reported on the new distribution range of Hemiclepsis khankiana, which was initially discovered in China. Understanding patterns of diversity across macro (e.g. species‐level) and micro (e.g. molecular‐level) scales can shed light on community function and stability by elucidating the abiotic and biotic drivers of diversity within ecological communities. We examined the relationships among taxonomic and genetic metrics of diversity in freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae), an ecologically important and species‐rich group in the southeastern United States. Using quantitative community surveys and reduced‐representation genome sequencing across 22 sites in seven rivers and two river basins, we surveyed 68 mussel species and sequenced 23 of these species to characterize intrapopulation genetic variation. We tested for the presence of species diversity–abundance correlations (i.e. the more‐individuals hypothesis, MIH), species‐genetic diversity correlations (SGDCs) and abundance‐genetic diversity correlations (AGDCs) across all sites to evaluate relationships between different metrics of diversity. Sites with greater cumulative multispecies density (a standardized metric of abundance) had a greater number of species, consistent with the MIH hypothesis. Intrapopulation genetic diversity was strongly associated with the density of most species, indicating the presence of AGDCs. However, there was no consistent evidence for SGDCs. Although sites with greater overall densities of mussels had greater species richness, sites with higher genetic diversity did not always exhibit positive correlations with species richness, suggesting that there are spatial and evolutionary scales at which the processes influencing community‐level diversity and intraspecific diversity differ. The increasing attention that carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted due to their distinctive properties makes them one of the most widely used nanomaterials for industrial purposes. However, their toxicity and environmental effects must be carefully studied, particularly regarding aquatic biota. The implications of these carbon-based nanomaterials on aquatic ecosystems, due to their potential entry or accidental release during manufacturing and treatment processes, need to be studied because their impacts upon living organisms are not fully understood. In this research work, the toxicity of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ox-MWCNTs) was measured using the freshwater bivalve (Corbicula fluminea) after exposure to different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 mg·L−1 Ox-MWCNTs) for 14 days. The oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes were analyzed (pH, Raman microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering), showing their properties and behavior (size, aggregation state, and structure) in water media. The antioxidant defenses in the organism's digestive gland and gills were evaluated through measuring oxidative stress enzymes (glutathione-S-transferase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase), lipid peroxidation, and total ubiquitin. The results showed a concentration-dependent response of antioxidant enzymes (CAT and GST) in both tissues (gills and digestive glands) for all exposure periods in bivalves exposed to the different concentrations of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Lipid peroxidation (MDA content) showed a variable response with the increase in oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the gills after 7 and 14 exposure days. Overall, after 14 days, there was an increase in total Ub compared to controls. Overall, the oxidative stress observed after the exposure of Corbicula fluminea to oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes indicates that the discharge of these nanomaterials into aquatic ecosystems can affect the biota as well as potentially accumulate in the trophic chain, and may even put human health at risk if they ingest contaminated animals. Freshwater mussels of the genus Buldowskia (Bivalvia, Unionidae) are distributed from the Amur River basin in Russia and China southward to the Korean Peninsula and some Japanese islands. This work is an integrative morphological study of Buldowskia suifunica glochidia from locations in the Primorsky Territory, the Russian Far East. Glochidia of B. suifunica, taken from the same gill have asynchronous development. The external and internal morphology of its shell has been characterized. The morphology of its sensory system, within three stages of larval development (immature, intermediate and mature glochidia), consists of hair cells as well as nonhair cells. Their muscle system is composed of massive adductor and minor muscle bundles. The FMRFamid-ergic nervous system turned out to be a complex system includes basal cells (neurons), their neurites and anterior neurons. FMRFamide and tubulin was found in all neurons. Glochidia of B. suifunica have only four 5-HT-lir neurons. We concluded that B. suifunica glochidial nervous system differs from those of the larval systems of planktotrophic marine mollusks. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of natural river floods on biotic communities. To this purpose, we used freshwater mussels (FMs), recognized as one of the most reliable bioindicators in aquatic environments. A well-established valvometry technique was applied to measure the FMs valve gaping behaviour, considering both gaping amplitude and frequency. The mussels have been employed in two distinct configurations, either free to move or stuck on vertical bars. We performed experiments in a laboratory flume and in the Paglia River (Italy). The FMs valve gaping movement was first recorded, then the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) analysis was applied to the signals to get the time-dependent frequency of the signals. Laboratory experiments allowed to assess to what extent stuck mussels react differently than free mussels to abrupt increases in flow conditions. Subsequently, we examined the response of thirteen stuck mussels installed in real riverine conditions during a moderate flood occurred on March 31, 2022, with a rapid increase of the water level. The experimental results demonstrate that stuck mussels produce signals that are more consistent and easier to interpret compared to free mussels, primarily due to the reduced number of features resulting from movement constraints. The stuck mussels in the field showed a sharp and timely change of valve gaping frequency as the flood ramped up, thus confirming the findings in the laboratory. The results highlight the effectiveness of using FMs as bioindicators for assessing the impact of floods on the aquatic ecosystem, and the utility of CWT as a suitable signal processing tool for analyzing valvometric time series. These findings provide a pathway towards the integration of FMs valvometry and CWT for the development of operational real-time Biological Early Warning Systems (BEWS) aimed at the monitoring and safeguarding of aquatic ecosystems. Animals are a critical component of biogeochemical cycles. While animal mediated fluxes of nutrients and energy have received considerable attention, the impacts of these fluxes on microbial community structure and function are comparatively understudied. Here, we investigated if freshwater mussel influences on biogeochemical cycling in stream sediment are accompanied by changes in sediment microbial community composition and ecoenzymatic activity, and if these relationships change under different nutrient regimes.We predicted that mussel effects on ecosystem function are reflected by modified sediment microbial communities. We hypothesized that if changes in either sediment ecoenzymatic function or microbial community composition are driven by mussel‐derived nutrient amendments, we should see muted changes in microbial community assemblages or function when a given nutrient is abundant. However, if microbial communities and function are influenced by other mussel functions, then we should see uniform changes regardless of nutrient availability.We transplanted freshwater mussels and natural river sediment to flow‐through mesocosms and monitored changes in microbial community composition over 1 week. Our results indicate that mussels always changed sediment microbial community composition, but the way communities changed was dependent on ambient nutrient concentrations.On the final day we measured the activity of ecoenzymes known to correlate to microbial function and nutrient availability. Mussels homogenized the stoichiometric ratios of ecoenzyme activities, indicating a consistent function of sediment microbes associated with freshwater mussels. Our results suggest that mussels may promote functional redundancy in sediment microbial communities and highlight the importance of animals in controlling biogeochemical transformations under changing nutrient conditions. Freshwater mussels are highly impacted by many human activities. As a result, it is considered one of the most threatened ecosystems worldwide. Studying genetic diversity is crucial for any further research on conservation efforts. In the present study, inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker analysis was employed to study genetic diversity between 8 randomly selected specimens of bivalve. A total of 53 bands were produced from the 10 primers. Of these 37 bands were polymorphic, resulting in 69.8% polymorphism. Some primers showed more polymorphic bands than others. For example, primer ISSR M17 produced no polymorphic bands. While primer ISSR M1 produced 3 polymorphic bands (100% polymorphism). Cluster analysis, based on a similarity matrix, obtained showed that the 8 bivalve specimens can be clustered into two groups, one group containing specimens 2 and 6, and the other group representing specimens 4, 5, 1, 3, 7, and 8. These data may suggest that the bivalves in Abohomos, Behera Governorate, Egypt, may have more than one species. The implication of these data on the conservation of the bivalve is explained. We investigated an interaction between bitterlings and a parasitic leech Hemiclepsis kasmiana in freshwater mussel hosts. We found that leeches fed on bitterling eggs and embryos; this may exert a considerable negative effect on bitterling fitness. Host choices by females of three bitterling species may be differently affected by the presence of leeches within mussels; Tanakia limbata apparently avoided laying eggs in infested mussels while T. lanceolata and Acheilognathus rhombeus did not. Sea levels across the planet are rising, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States. Climate‐induced sea level rise can result in the inundation and intrusion of seawater into freshwater drainages. This would alter salinity regimes and lead to the salinization of coastal freshwater ecosystems. Increased salinity levels in freshwater can negatively affect freshwater‐dependent species, including native mussels belonging to the order Unionida, which are highly sensitive to changes in water quality. Sea salt is largely made up of sodium and chloride ions, forming sodium chloride, a known toxicant to freshwater mussels. However, sea salt is a mixture that also contains other major ions, including potassium, sulfate, calcium, strontium, and magnesium, among others. Freshwater mussels exposed to sea salt would be exposed to each of the sea salt ions at the same time, resulting in a mixture toxicity effect. The mixture toxicity of these ions on early life stages of freshwater mussels is largely unknown because most research to date has evaluated individual salt ions in relative isolation. Therefore, we conducted acute toxicity tests on early life stages (glochidia and juvenile) of three freshwater mussel species that inhabit Atlantic Slope drainages (nonsalinity‐adapted Atlanticoncha ochracea, salinity‐adapted A. ochracea, Sagittunio nasutus, and Utterbackiana implicata). Glochidia and juveniles of each species were exposed to a control and six concentrations of Instant Ocean® Sea Salt (IOSS), a synthetic sea salt that closely resembles the ionic composition of natural sea salt. Exposure concentrations were 1 part(s) per thousand (ppt), 2 ppt, 8.5 ppt, 12.5 ppt, 17 ppt, and 34 ppt. We calculated the median effect concentration (EC50) for each of the eight acute toxicity tests and found that glochidia were more sensitive than juveniles to IOSS. At hour 24 EC50s for the glochidia ranged from 0.38 to 3.6 ppt, with the most sensitive freshwater mussel being the nonsalinity‐adapted A. ochracea, exhibiting an EC50 of 0.38 ppt (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.33–0.44). Juvenile freshwater mussels exhibited EC50s at hour 96 ranging from 5.0 to 10.4 ppt, with the least sensitive freshwater mussel being the nonsalinity‐adapted A. ochracea, exhibiting an EC50 of 10.4 ppt (95% CI 9.1–12.0). Our results show that acute exposure to sea salt adversely affects freshwater mussel viability, particularly glochidia. This information can be used to enhance freshwater mussel conservation strategies in regions that are or will be impacted by climate‐induced sea level rise and associated freshwater salinization. Animal excretion provides nutrients for primary productivity and can be a crucial component of ecosystem nutrient cycling. The concentrations of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in an animal's excretion are strongly influenced by the C:N:P stoichiometry (molar ratios) of its body and of the food it eats. We measured the C:N:P ratios of quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) tissues and excreta and of seston across wide environmental and spatial gradients in the upper Laurentian Great Lakes. We then investigated how mussel excretion rates were impacted by stoichiometric mismatch—the difference between the C:P ratios of mussel tissues and the C:P ratios their food. Quagga mussel internal C:N:P stoichiometry varied significantly across sites and seasons, driven primarily by changes in tissue P concentrations. When mussel tissues had substantially lower C:P ratios than seston (that is, strong stoichiometric mismatch), mussels excreted significantly less N and P relative to C. Excretion C:N ratios varied by nearly threefold, while C:P ratios varied by tenfold. The effect of the stoichiometric mismatch on excretion stoichiometry was more dramatic in the spring, when mussels had higher tissue P concentrations, than in the summer. This suggests seasonality in mussel P demand. Our results challenge the assumption of strict internal homeostasis in consumers and demonstrate that food and tissue stoichiometry need to be considered to predict consumer excretion stoichiometry. These findings help to better understand the impact of consumer-driven nutrient cycling in aquatic environments and quagga mussel contributions to the nutrient budgets of invaded ecosystems. Freshwater mussels are one of the most diverse and critically endangered organismal groups in the world. In North America, many of the ∼300 species are imperiled to some degree, and numerous states, including Illinois, have instituted surveys and safeguards to protect their remaining mussel resources. In Illinois, the status of many mussel species is unknown, and additional efforts are needed to determine the health of rare and endangered mussels. The Rock River system was historically a stronghold for mussels in Illinois; however, studies over the last decade are lacking. To obtain current data on the health and status of mussels within a portion of the Rock River, we conducted survey efforts throughout the upper Rock River. We sampled mussels semi-quantitatively at 30 sites using bank-to-bank transects in July of 2021 to determine whether rare and endangered species were still extant. We also examined the abundances of species currently considered common and assessed shell-length data to determine the overall viability of the mussel fauna. We surveyed a total of 4360 m of the river and obtained 2506 live mussels of 19 species. The assemblage consisted primarily of Potamilus ohiensis (Pink Papershell) and Cyclonaias pustulosa (Pimpleback), and approximately half the assemblage consisted of recent recruits (juveniles). We collected live Cyclonaias nodulata (Wartyback), Cyclonaias tuberculata (Purple Wartyback), and Truncilla donaciformis (Fawnsfoot), all Illinois or Wisconsin state-listed species. The Purple Wartyback consisted of 2 cohorts and are the first live individuals recorded from the Rock River since the late 1980s. Furthermore, the presence of numerous juveniles indicates successful reproduction and recruitment for multiple species. Continued work on managing stream habitats is vital to protecting and reinforcing their remaining diversity, and the upper Rock River warrants further protections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Similar shell features are observed across multiple genera, indicating a possible phenotypic response to an as-of-yet unidentified environmental factor. Freshwater mussels are declining throughout their range. Their important ecological functions along with insufficient levels of natural recruitment have prompted captive breeding for population augmentation and questions about the usefulness and applicability of such measures.This article reviews the current state of captive breeding and rearing programmes for freshwater mussels in Europe. It considers the various species, strategies, and techniques of propagation, as well as the different levels of effort required according to rearing method, highlighting the key factors of success.Within the last 30 years, 46 breeding activities in 16 European countries have been reported, mainly of Margaritifera margaritifera and Unio crassus. Some facilities propagate species that are in a very critical situation, such as Pseudunio auricularius, Unio mancus, and Unio ravoisieri, or multiple species concurrently. In some streams, the number of released captive‐bred mussels already exceeds the size of the remaining natural population.Rearing efforts range from highly intensive laboratory incubation to lower intensity methods using in‐river mussel cages or silos. Most breeding efforts are funded by national and EU LIFE(+) grants, are well documented, and consider the genetic integrity of the propagated mussels. Limited long‐term funding perspectives, the availability of experienced staff, water quality, and feeding/survival during early life stages are seen as the most important challenges.Successful captive breeding programmes need to be combined with restoration of the habitats into which the mussels are released. This work will benefit from an evidence‐based approach, knowledge exchange among facilities, and an overall breeding strategy comprising multiple countries and conservation units. Multiple stressors can affect populations interactively. However, the process by which they affect recruitment remains unclear, especially in long‐lived organisms with complex life cycles.This study explored the bottleneck stages of juvenile recruitment in the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera togakushiensis and the interactive effects of nutrients and fine sediments on these stages. The proportion of M. togakushiensis juveniles aged ≤10 years was investigated in 24 rivers from north‐eastern Japan. Margaritifera togakushiensis has a complex life cycle with an obligate parasitic larval stage. Gravid female density, glochidia density (the number of glochidial infections per stream area), and juvenile survival rate, used as indices for adult, parasitic, and post‐parasitic juvenile stages, respectively, were obtained from 11 of these rivers.Twenty‐four population status assessments showed that the proportion of juveniles aged ≤10 years ranged from 0.00 to 0.23, and that they were absent in 12 rivers. Parasitic and post‐parasitic juvenile stages were bottlenecks for recruitment; juvenile survival rates had a stronger positive effect on recruitment in rivers with high glochidia density. Juvenile survival rate was negatively associated with the synergistic effects of nutrients and fine sediments, although factors limiting glochidia density were not identified.These findings suggest that the interaction between nutrients and fine sediments can synergistically reduce the recruitment of M. togakushiensis, indicating an underestimated impact of stressors on mussel recruitment if treated individually. Future mitigation measures should consider both nutrient levels and fine sediments to restore mussel recruitment. The United States of America has a diverse collection of freshwater mussels comprising 301 species distributed among 59 genera and two families (Margaritiferidae and Unionidae), each having a unique suite of traits. Mussels are among the most imperilled animals and are critical components of their ecosystems, and successful management, conservation and research requires a cohesive and widely accessible data source. Although trait-based analysis for mussels has increased, only a small proportion of traits reflecting mussel diversity in this region has been collated. Decentralized and non-standardized trait information impedes large-scale analysis. Assembling trait data in a synthetic dataset enables comparison across species and lineages and identification of data gaps. We collated data from the primary literature, books, state and federal reports, theses and dissertations, and museum collections into a centralized dataset covering information on taxonomy, morphology, reproductive ecology and life history, fish hosts, habitats, thermal tolerance, geographic distribution, available genetic information, and conservation status. The origin of the fauna of Beringia is a notable biogeographical puzzle. Large mussels of the genus Beringiana inhabit both Northeast Asia and the northwestern part of North America and thus provide an important model to investigate the paleobiogeography of Beringia and the past and current intercontinental species exchanges. Data on Beringiana distribution, morphology, genetics, and taxonomy are fragmentary or questionable. In this study, we summarized the data on its distribution in Northeast Asia, performed genetic analysis (cox1), and studied the variation in the shell morphology in samples from four isolated populations, including the putative sympatric species. Over ten large enclaves of Beringiana are currently known in Northeast Asia (east to the Verkhoyansk Range), mostly in the lower reaches of large rivers in northeastern Yakutia, Kamchatka, Magadan Oblast, and Khabarovsk Krai. These enclaves are far apart (several hundreds of kilometers) because the mussel is associated with muddy sand or pebbly sand bottom substrates and spreads through its glochidia, which are parasitic on the fish. Shell morphology can be highly variable even in a single population, overlapping the diagnoses of several Beringiana species (which are currently not recognized as valid). Our analysis of the cox1 sequence in four populations identified all individuals as B. beringiana. We evaluated the possible current and probable Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene freshwater and marine pathways of B. beringiana dispersal through the area of former Beringia, including the current intercontinental migration of glochidia on fish. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) are often described as ecosystem engineers, with the capacity to alter abiotic habitats; this can facilitate certain macroinvertebrate taxa, increasing biodiversity and potentially altering community composition. Mussel species are often implicitly considered to be broad ecological equivalents, with similar impacts on abiotic environments and benthic communities. This assumption of redundancy is important in conservation approaches that aim to preserve ecosystem functioning, rather than species identity. We tested this assumption of equivalence in two species of subtropical freshwater mussels, Lamellidens marginalis and Parreysia caerulea, studying the associations between these mussel species and macroinvertebrate communities.We measured mussel density and abundance of macroinvertebrates, identified to family level, at 50 sites within Dhanmondi Lake, a heavily polluted sub‐tropical urban lake in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We investigated the associations of mussel density on different macroinvertebrate families, which we further classified into functional feeding groups (predators, scrapers, collectors and shredders).We found that densities of the two mussel species were negatively correlated in the 1–3‐m nearshore zone; average density of Lamellidens was 46.4 ± SE 3.6 individuals/0.25 m2, and average density of Parreysia was 6.4 ± SE 1.4 individuals/0.25 m2. In total, 2319 Lamellidens and 320 Parreysia specimens were recorded. Sites containing higher densities of Lamellidens had greater similarity in macroinvertebrate community composition, while there was no effect for Parreysia. Particular macroinvertebrate families and functional feeding groups were also associated with mussels; the majority of significant associations were with Lamellidens but not Parreysia. The clearest associations were with predators and scrapers, which increased in abundance with Lamellidens density.This provides support for a possible role for mussels in structuring freshwater invertebrate communities and emphasises the importance of species identity in these effects, with one possible keystone species (Lamellidens) largely accounting for mussel–invertebrate associations. While microhabitat variables (shading and sediment type) were poor predictors of abundance in any invertebrate taxa (including mussels), manipulative studies are needed to disentangle the direct effects of mussels from the role of overlapping habitat preference between mussels and other invertebrates.Our results highlight the importance of species identity in patterns of community composition, particularly for ecosystem engineer species. Unionid mussels are imperiled worldwide. Understanding the impacts of thermal and hypoxia stress on larval (glochidia) and adult physiology is critical for understanding the potential impacts of climate change. We tested whether brood viability (proportion of glochidia competent to attach to a host) was correlated with oxygen demand (MO2), ability to regulate oxygen consumption (regulation index (RI)), and/or critical dissolved oxygen concentration (DOcrit). We then examined the effects of temperature on MO2, RI, and DOcrit. The results were coupled with a previous study to estimate the fraction of brooding female oxygen demand comprised of glochidial respiration. We found little evidence that respiratory patterns of glochidia changed with declining brood viability, but strong evidence for decreasing glochidial RI and increasing DOcrit with increasing temperatures. Glochidial respiration temperature coefficient (Q10) values were approximately 2–3× those estimated for brooding females, indicating greater temperature sensitivity. The proportion of gravid female respiration comprised of glochidial respiration reached its maximum at temperatures (23–28 °C) coinciding with brood expulsion. These patterns suggest high temperatures may have deleterious effects on unionids by decreasing the hypoxia tolerance of glochidia, increasing the rate at which glochidia deplete energy reserves, and increasing the proportion of oxygen consumption by gravid females that is comprised of glochidial oxygen demand. Positive biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships observed in experiments can be challenging to identify in natural communities. Freshwater animal communities are disproportionately harmed by global change that results in accelerated species loss. Understanding how animal‐mediated ecosystems functions may change as a result of global change can help determine whether biodiversity or species‐specific conservation will be effective at maintaining function. Unionid mussels represent half of imperiled species in freshwater ecosystems globally and perform important ecological functions such as water filtration and nutrient recycling. We explored BEF relationships for 22 naturally assembled mussel aggregations spanning three river basins. We used the Price equation to partition the contributions of species richness, composition, and context dependent interactions to two functions of interests: spatially‐explicit standing‐stock biomass (indirect proxy for function) and species‐specific nitrogen (N) excretion rates (direct measure of N recycling). Random and non‐random species loss each reduced biomass and N recycling. Many rare species with low contributions to biomass contributed to standing‐stock biomass in all basins. Widespread species had variable function across sites, such that context dependent effects (CDEs) outweighed richness effects on standing‐stock biomass in two basins, and were similar to richness effects in the third. Richness effects outweighed CDEs for N recycling. Thus, many species contributed a low proportion to overall N‐recycling; a product we attribute to the high evenness and functional effect trait diversity associated with these communities. The loss of low‐functioning species reduced the function of persisting species. This novel result using observational data adds evidence that positive species interactions, such as interspecific facilitation, may be a mechanism by which biodiversity enhances ecosystem functions. Our work stresses the importance of evaluating species‐specific contributions to functions in diverse systems, such as nutrient cycling when maintaining specific animal‐mediated functions is a management goal because indirect proxies may not completely characterize BEF relationships. Unionid mussels are among the most imperiled group of organisms in North America, and Pustulosa pustulosa is a freshwater species with a relatively wide latitudinal distribution that extends from southern Ontario, Canada, to Texas, USA. Considerable morphological and geographic variation in the genus Pustulosa (formerly Cyclonaias) has led to uncertainty over species boundaries, and recent studies have suggested revisions to species-level classifications by synonymizing C. aurea, C. houstonensis, C. mortoni, and C. refulgens with C. pustulosa (currently P. pustulosa). Owing to its wide range and shallow phylogenetic differentiation, we analyzed individuals of P. pustulosa using mitochondrial DNA sequence data under a population genetics framework. We included 496 individuals, which were comprised of 166 samples collected during this study and 330 additional sequences retrieved from GenBank. Pairwise ΦST measures based on ND1 data suggested there may be up to five major geographic groups present within P. pustulosa. Genetic differentiation between regions within Texas was higher compared to populations from the Mississippi and Great Lakes populations, which may reflect differences in historical connectivity. Mitochondrial sequence data also revealed varying demographic histories for each major group suggesting each geographic region has also experienced differential population dynamics in the past. Future surveys should consider exploring variation within species after phylogeographic delimitation has been performed. Freshwater mussels are considered the most imperiled group of organisms in North America and systematics research has played an integral role in the development and implementation of their conservation. Despite the importance of systematics in conservation planning, the evolutionary relationships between many mussel taxa remain poorly explored, clearly illustrated by Strophitus undulatus. This species is wide-ranging, occurring in streams across the United States and Canada with a disjunct population in the Colorado River drainage in central Texas. The widespread distribution of S. undulatus, as well as high intraspecific morphological variation, has led previous authors to doubt the taxon is representative of a single species. In this study, we set out to investigate species boundaries in S. undulatus by integrating environmental, molecular, and morphological datasets. Molecular and morphological data supported S. undulatus from the Colorado River as distinct, which was supplemented by a species distribution modeling approach, suggesting potential adaptation to Edwards Plateau streams has contributed to speciation. Given our findings, we formally describe a new species of freshwater mussel, Strophitus howellsi, endemic to streams along the Edwards Plateau in the Colorado River drainage. A conservation assessment of S. howellsi suggests the species is extremely rare within a highly restricted distribution and may warrant future recovery actions. Our findings build on a growing body of literature highlighting aquatic endemism along the Edwards Plateau and have significant conservation implications for freshwater mussels in Texas. Freshwater mussels are important indicators of the overall health of their environment but have suffered declines that have been attributed to factors such as habitat degradation, a loss of fish hosts, climate change, and excessive nutrient inputs. The loss of mussel biodiversity can negatively impact freshwater ecosystems such that understanding the mussel's gut microbiome has been identified as a priority topic for developing conservation strategies. In this study, we determine whether ethanol-stored specimens of freshwater mussels can yield representative information about their gut microbiomes such that changes in the microbiome through time could potentially be determined from museum mussel collections. A short-term preservation experiment using the invasive clam Corbicula fluminea was used to validate the use of ethanol as a method for storing the bivalve microbiome, and the gut microbiomes of nine native mussel species that had been preserved in ethanol for between 2 and 9 years were assessed. We show that ethanol preservation is a valid storage method for bivalve specimens in terms of maintaining an effective sequencing depth and the richness of their gut bacterial assemblages and provide further insight into the gut microbiomes of the invasive clam C. fluminea and nine species of native mussels. From this, we identify a "core" genus of bacteria (Romboutsia) that is potentially common to all freshwater bivalve species studied. Most organisms possess the capacity to metabolize arsenic (As) accumulating compounds to less toxic forms, thus minimizing the adverse effect induced by this metalloid. However, other contaminants may to interfere with As metabolism, contributing to the accumulation of more toxic compounds. Microplastics (MPs) are omnipresent in aquatic environment and may induce toxicological effects (alone or in combination with other contaminants) on living organisms. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the exposure of the freshwater clam Limnoperna fortunei to a combination of MP (4 and 40 μg/L of polystyrene microbeads, 1.05 μm) and As (50 μg/L) for 48 h, evaluating the accumulation and metabolization of As and oxidative stress parameters, such as catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase activities, total antioxidant competence, reduced glutathione (GSH), and lipid damage in the gills and digestive glands. Results revealed that low MP concentration disrupts the redox state of the digestive gland by a decrease in the antioxidant activity (CAT and total antioxidant capacity). GSH levels in the gills of animals exposed to MP (4 μg/L) alone and the combination of MP + As increased, concomitant with an increase in the percentage of toxic compounds, indicating the effect of MP on As metabolism. Although, few studies evaluated the effect of coexposure to MP + As by considering metabolization of metalloid in freshwater bivalve, our results revealed that exposure to MP reduced the metabolization capacity of As, favoring the accumulation of more toxic compounds besides the MP alone, which showed a pro-oxidant effect in L. fortunei. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities, which include unionid freshwater mussels, enhance the health of river ecosystems. Human impacts have driven declines within freshwater mussel communities and due to their complex life cycles, mussel recovery efforts are complex. In Canada, conservation of imperiled species has focused on biodiversity hotspots such as the Sydenham River in the Laurentian Great Lakes Basin. In practice, species conservation and habitat monitoring are siloed between federal agencies and local conservation authorities, limiting the potential for alignment of conservation policy and practice. Here we bring together federal, local, and our own survey data to explore patterns of co-occurrences between mussel species and other macroinvertebrate taxa to explore the extent to which knowledge of one benthic community informs the other. Mussel communities (species richness, community composition) differed between sites where imperiled mussel species were present and/or absent. Benthic macroinvertebrate metrics (e.g., family richness, percent Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera taxa) and specific indicator taxa were correlated with mussel species richness and the presence of imperiled mussel species. We show that benthic macroinvertebrate diversity indicators provided insight into imperiled species occurrences that warrant further investigation. These findings underscore support for coordinated watershed monitoring efforts and could be crucial for more successful freshwater mussel conservation.

A new species of freshwater mussel belonging to the genus Pseudocuneopsis, namely Pseudocuneopsis wuana sp. nov., is diagnosed and described from Guangxi Province, China. This paper provides a detailed shell morphological description, soft-body anatomical characteristics, and partial sequences of mitochondrial COI as DNA barcode data for the novel species. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners (Pseudocuneopsis sichuanensis, P. yangshuoensis, and P. capitata) by shell shape, beak position, and surface sculpture. Phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial COI gene reveal that Pseudocuneopsis wuana sp. nov. forms a sister group with P. yangshuoensis and exhibits an interspecific genetic distance of 5.1%. The shell of a freshwater mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) is a composite biological material that plays an active role in maintaining ecosystem services. Mussel shells have variable structures both within and between species. In this study, the structural and biological characteristics of the shells of Potomida semirugata and Leguminaia wheatleyi were investigated in order to use freshwater mussel shells as a biological material. Close observation of the microstructure of the shells of the two common freshwater bivalves revealed a variation in construction from the outer periostracum to the inner nacreous layer. In P. semirugata, a polygonal arrangement with columnar prisms of different sizes was observed more significantly. In L. wheatleyi the prismatic columns are oval and irregularly polygonal. The nacreous layers of P. semirugata, in which the individual aragonite layers are horizontally overlapped, are more uniformly distributed. The overlapping of the aragonite sheets in L. wheatleyi is more irregular. The presence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the shells was confirmed by the identification of the characteristic carbonate bands at 701.9, 713.5, and 865.8 cm-1. This information was used to classify and distinguish the different layers of the shells, allowing interspecific comparisons and variations in the different layers. The results clearly showed that shell samples were highly biocompatible and nontoxic compared to the control group. This finding suggests that these materials have promising potential for use in various biomedical applications where biocompatibility is a critical factor. The results indicated that the shells of the freshwater bivalves P. semirugata and L. wheatleyi are biological materials with potential multiple applications for human well-being and environmental quality. Truncilla macrodon ¸ the Texas Fawnsfoot, is currently considered to be restricted to the Brazos and Colorado river drainages in central Texas, USA. Subfossil specimens resembling T. macrodon from shell middens in the Trinity river drainage have raised questions about its presumptive range. Extant Truncilla populations occupying the Trinity river drainage are believed to be Truncilla donaciformis , the Fawnsfoot, but the species identity has not been assessed using molecular techniques. In this study, we set out to use phylogeographic and morphometric approaches to resolve the distribution of Truncilla spp. in Texas, with an emphasis on assessing species identity of Truncilla in the Trinity river drainage. Our molecular analyses indicated individuals from the Trinity river drainage are T. macrodon rather than T. donaciformis , and morphometric analyses using ratios of shell length, width and height supports this finding and showed differentiation among T. macrodon, Truncilla cognata and T. donaciformis. These combined findings suggest the range of T. macrodon is larger than previously recognized and includes the Colorado, Brazos and Trinity river drainages. The status of Truncilla spp. in the San Jacinto river basin remains unclear due to lack of information on historical or extant populations, but we recommend conservationists consider T. macrodon as part of the mussel fauna since the drainage shares an embayment with the Trinity river drainage. Molecular data also indicated the Trinity population of T. macrodon is distinct from, and more genetically diverse than, the Brazos and Colorado populations. This difference suggests the Trinity River population should be treated as a separate management unit from the Brazos and Colorado River populations to facilitate effective conservation and recovery planning.
