Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the prevalence of destructive periodontal disease and its risk indicators in adult Kiriri Indians from Northeast Brazil., Materials and Methods: Full-mouth periodontal examinations were performed on a sample of 215 Indians (≥19 years). Bivariate analyses and logistic models were applied to assess associations between periodontitis and its putative risk factors., Results: Prevalence of clinical attachment loss of ≥3, ≥5 and ≥7 mm was 97.8%, 63.8% and 30.8% respectively. Percentage of teeth per individual showing clinical attachment loss of ≥3, ≥5 and ≥7 mm was 49.8%, 18.4% and 8.0% respectively. After adjustment for covariates, individuals aged ≥35 years (OR = 5.83, 95% CI: 3.09-11.00; p < 0.001), men (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.15-4.11; p = 0.02) and diabetics (OR = 3.92, 95% CI 1.03-14.99; p = 0.05) had a higher risk for destructive periodontitis, classified according to the CDC/AAP case definition., Conclusion: Though periodontitis was highly prevalent in Kiriri Indians, only few teeth showed advanced disease, and periodontitis was associated with higher age, male sex and diabetes. A public health action that includes programs of prevention and treatment targeting high-risk groups is vital to improve the periodontal status of this population., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Tropidurus oreadicus Rodrigues 1987 is a recently described species, thus there are no reports of helminthes parasites for this species. In this study, a morphological characterisation was performed of a nematode species parasite of the large intestine of T. oreadicus captured in an urban area. This urban area is similar to the estuarine dale from Guamá river and the "igarapés" of Belém, Pará State, Brazil. Morphological analysis suggested that the parasite is a new species of nematode, based mainly on the number and distribution pattern of the caudal papillae in males, which is unique for this species. In the present work, we describe for the first time the structure, number, and disposition of the cervical papillae. The morphological data were supported by scanning electron microscopy, which served as an important tool for distinguishing these nematodes from other species of the genus., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Nematodes of the genus Rhabdias Stiles & Hassall, 1905 (Rhabditoidea: Rhabdiasidae) have a dioecious free-living stage and a hermaphroditic stage that parasitises the lungs of amphibians and reptiles. Approximately 94 species of Rhabdias have been described. Because the similar morphological characteristics such as the labial structures, the location of the vulva and the shape of the tail of Rhabdias spp. hinder their identification, molecular biology techniques and scanning electron microscopy have been employed to diagnose species of this genus. This study describes Rhabdias breviensis n. sp., parasitic in the lungs of two Neotropical frog species Leptodactylus petersii Steindachner and Leptodactylus macrosternum Miranda-Ribeiro. The description of this species integrates classical taxonomy, scanning electron microscopy and a molecular analysis of the mitochondrial COI gene. The new species differs from all other Rhabdias species parasitic in Neotropical hosts in certain morphometric parameters, the position of the vulva, the host group and the cephalic characters.

Aim: To determine the epithelial expression of β-catenin and survivin in sporadic (primary, and recurrent) and nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) in order to assess activation of the β-catenin pathway and evidence of apoptotic inhibition, processes that may contribute to the known differences in their biological behaviour., Materials and Methods: Sections from 40 cases of KCOT (19 sporadic/primary; 9 sporadic/recurrent and 12 NBCCS-associated) were immunohistochemically stained for β-catenin and survivin. The extent and intensity of immunoreactivity within the lining epithelium was assessed, using semi-quantitative scales, independently by two pathologists who were blinded to the clinical-pathological data. Data were analysed using Kruskal-Wallis test and, for pair-wise comparisons, Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction., Results: All cystic epithelial linings stained for β-catenin and survivin but there were differences in the pattern and intensity of staining among KCOT types. Sporadic primary KCOT showed weaker staining for β-catenin (P=0.0003) and survivin (P<0.0048) that was restricted to the basal and para-basal layers only, compared to sporadic recurrent and NBCCS-associated KCOT, which showed expression throughout all epithelial layers. There were no differences in β-catenin expression among recurrent and NBCCS-associated KCOT, whereas the intensity of survivin staining was higher in NBCCS-KCOT (P=0.0003). Nuclear staining for β-catenin was found exclusively in recurrent (5/9 cases) and NBCCS-associated (4/12 cases) KCOT., Conclusion: The data demonstrate β-catenin delocalization and survivin over-expression in recurrent sporadic and NBCCS-associated KCOT suggesting that these pathways related to apoptotic inhibition have a role in KCOT growth and recurrence.

Iron deficiency impairs the formation of hemoglobin, red blood cells, as well the transport of oxygen. The wound healing process involves numerous functions, many of which are dependent on the presence of oxygen. Laser has been shown to improve angiogenesis, increases blood supply, cell proliferation and function. We aimed to study the effect of λ660 nm laser and λ700 nm light-emitting diode (LED) on fibroblastic proliferation on cutaneous wounds on iron-deficient rodents. Induction of iron anemia was carried out by feeding 105 newborn rats with a special iron-free diet. A 1 × 1 cm wound was created on the dorsum of each animal that were randomly distributed into seven groups: I, control anemic; II, anemic no treatment; III, anemic+L; IV, anemic+LED; V, healthy no treatment; VI, healthy+laser; VII, healthy+LED (n=15 each). Phototherapy was carried out using either a diode laser (λ660 nm, 40 mW, 10 J/cm(2)) or a prototype LED device (λ700 ± 20 nm, 15 mW, 10 J/cm(2)). Treatment started immediately after surgery and was repeated at 48-h interval during 7, 14, and 21 days. After animal death, specimens were taken, routinely processed, cut, stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and underwent histological analysis and fibroblast counting. Significant difference between healthy and anemic subjects on regards the number of fibroblast between treatments was seen (p<0.008, p<0.001). On healthy animals, significant higher count was seen when laser was used (p<0.008). Anemic subjects irradiated with LED showed significantly higher count (p<0.001). It is concluded that the use of LED light caused a significant positive biomodulation of fibroblastic proliferation on anemic animals and laser was more effective on increasing proliferation on non-anemics.

Angiogenesis is a key process for wound healing. There are few reports of LED phototherapy on angiogenesis, mainly in vivo. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate histologically the angiogenesis on dorsal cutaneous wounds treated with laser (660 and 790 nm) or LEDs (700, 530, and 460 nm) in a rodent model. Twenty-four young adult male Wistar rats weighting between 200 and 250 g were used on the present study. Under general anesthesia, one excisional wound was created on the dorsum of each animal that were then randomly distributed into six groups with four animals each: G0-control; G1-laser λ660 nm (60 mW, ϕ ∼2 mm, 10 J/cm(2)); G2-laser λ790 nm (50 mW, ϕ ∼2 mm, 10 J/cm(2)); G3-LED λ700 ± 20 nm (15 mW, ϕ ∼16 mm, 10 J/cm(2)); G4-LED λ530 ± 20 nm (8 mW, ϕ ∼16 mm, 10 J/cm(2)); G5-LED λ460 ± 20 nm (22 mW, ϕ ∼16 mm, 10 J/cm(2)). Irradiation started immediately after surgery and was repeated every other day for 7 days. Animal death occurred at the eighth day after surgery. The specimens were removed, routinely processed to wax, cut and stained with HE. Angiogenesis was scored by blood vessel counting in the wounded area. Quantitative results showed that green LED (λ530 ± 20 nm), red LED (λ700 ± 20 nm), λ790 nm laser and λ660 nm laser caused significant increased angiogenesis when compared to the control group. It is concluded that both laser and LED light are capable of stimulating angiogenesis in vivo on cutaneous wounds and that coherence was not decisive on the outcome of the treatment.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. It is aggressive, highly proliferative, and metastatic. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LLLT and imiquimod on DMBA chemically induced lesions on the oral mucosa of hamsters. SCCs were induced on 25 hamsters. Animals of G1 (control 1) were killed and the presence of tumors confirmed; G2 (control 2) suffered no interventions for additional 4 weeks; animals of G3 (laser treatment) were irradiated (λ660 nm, 50 mW, CW, Ø=3 mm, 0.07 cm(2), 714.2 mW/cm(2), 133 s, 95 J/cm(2), 6.65 J) at every other day for 4 weeks; animals of G4 (imiquimod treatment) received 5 % imiquimod three times a week for 4 weeks; and animals of G5 (imiquimod and laser treatment) received both treatments for the same period. Samples were taken and underwent histological analysis by light microscopy and were investigated using immunohistochemistry for S-100(+) dendritic cells. In G1, G2, and G3, the evaluations showed malignant tumors and the absence of S-100(+) dendritic cells in the tumor stroma. In G4, 60 % of the animals had no malignant tumors, and S-100(+) dendritic cells were present in the stroma of the tumors as well as dysplasia. In G5, 40 % of the animals presented SCC, with scarce or no S-100(+) dendritic cells. The imiquimod treatment played a direct effect on SCC, demonstrated by the increased number of S-100(+) dendritic cells, which could suggest an important role of immune surveillance against neoplastic proliferation. Furthermore, its association with laser needs to be further investigated.

The aim of this study was to investigate the density of mast cells and microvessels in minor salivary gland tumors. Forty-one cases of minor salivary gland tumors (pleomorphic adenoma, n = 10; adenoid cystic carcinoma, n = 11; mucoepidermoid carcinoma, n = 10; and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma) were investigated using immunohistochemistry for mast cell tryptase and von-Willebrand factor. Density of mast cells was higher in mucoepidermoid carcinoma; however, no differences in the number of these cells were observed between the different types of tumors (p > 0.05). The number of mast cells was higher in periparenchymal areas in all tumors, but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed the largest number of periparenchymal mast cells, whereas pleomorphic adenomas showed the smallest number of intraparenchymal mast cells (p > 0.05). The highest microvessel density was observed in mucoepidermoid carcinomas, being this difference statistically significant when mucoepidermoid carcinoma was compared to pleomorphic adenoma (p = 0.0034) and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (p = 0.004). Microvessel density was significantly higher in adenoid cystic carcinoma when compared to pleomorphic adenoma (p = 0.0406) and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (p = 0.0123). Comparison of mast cells and microvessel densities showed no significant difference between tumors. A quantitative difference in mast cells and microvessels was observed, particularly in mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a finding supporting the aggressive behavior of malignant salivary gland tumors without myoepithelial differentiation. Further studies are needed to determine the role of mast cells in angiogenesis, as well as in the development and biological behavior of these tumors.

Purpose: The host response to infection differs between peri-implantitis and periodontitis, but the mechanisms underlying these differences are not understood. In this study, the distribution of dendritic cell subpopulations in healthy peri-implant mucosa (HPIM) was compared to that of healthy gingiva (HG)., Materials and Methods: HPIM and HG specimens were obtained from nonsmoking, systemically healthy subjects. Immunohistochemistry was used to quantify the number of Langerhans cells (LCs) (CD1a+) and interstitial dendritic cells (IDCs) (factor XIIIa+) in the oral epithelium, sulcular/junctional epithelia, and lamina propria without inflammatory infiltration and with inflammatory infiltration., Results: Fourteen HPIM and 13 HG specimens were obtained from subjects aged 29 to 55 years. The lamina propria of the HPIM had fewer LCs than that of the HG (HPIM: 7.99 ± 10.76, HG: 25.68 ± 16.98; P = .003). There was no significant difference in the number of CD1a+ cells in the oral epithelium or the sulcular/junctional epithelia between the HPIM and the HG (P ≥ .23). A greater number of IDCs was observed in the lamina propria with inflammatory infiltration of the HPIM compared to the HG (HPIM: 57.02 ± 35.70, HG: 33.89 ± 26.98; P = .06)., Conclusions: In the lamina propria of HPIM, fewer LCs and more IDCs were observed. These differences may be associated with reduced stimulation of the innate and acquired immune responses initiated by LCs and the greater matrix remodeling of peri-implant tissue associated with IDCs.

Background: The dentigerous cyst is usually defined as a cystic cavity that surrounds the crown of an unerupted tooth on the cementoenamel junction. The present article reports a case of an uncommon dentigerous cyst, highlighting its clinical, radiographic and surgical characteristics and discussing the aspects related to its development in infancy., Case Report: A 03-year-old boy patient presented with an extensive radiolucid area involving the crown of the right maxillary lateral incisor. A surgical excision was performed. Anatomopathological examination revealed a cystic tissue with a fibrous wall surrounded by nonkeratinized stratified squamous oral epithelium, without atypia., Conclusion: It is possible that the dentigerous cyst grows in the dental germ in any stage of development and not only in the follicle of a tooth with calcified crown attached to the cementoenamel junction.

This work carried out a histological analysis on bone defects grafted (MTA) treated or not with LED, BMPs, and membrane (GBR). Benefits of their isolated or combined usage on bone repair were reported, but not their association. Ninety rats were divided into ten groups and each subdivided into three. Defects on G II and I were filled with the blood clot. G II was further LED irradiated. G III and IV were filled with MTA; G IV was further LED irradiated. In G V and VI, the defects were filled with MTA and covered with a membrane (GBR). G VI was further LED irradiated. In G VII and VIII, BMPs were added to the MTA and group VIII was further LED irradiated. In G IX and X, the MTA + BMP graft was covered with a membrane (GBR). G X was further LED irradiated. LED was applied over the defect at 48-h intervals and repeated for 15 days. Specimens were processed, cut, and stained with H&E and Sirius red and underwent histological analysis. The use of LED light alone dramatically reduced inflammation. However, its use on MTA associated with BMP and/or GBR increased the severity of the inflammatory reaction. Regarding bone reabsorption, the poorest result was seen when the LED light was associated with the MTA + BMP graft. In the groups Clot and MTA + GBR, no bone reabsorption was detectable. Increased collagen deposition was observed when the LED light was associated with the use of the MTA associated with BMP and/or GBR. Increased new bone formation was observed when the LED light was used alone or associated with the use of MTA + GBR, MTA + BMP, on association of MTA + BMP + GBR and when BMP was added to the MTA. Our results indicate that the use of LED light alone or in association with MTA, MTA + BMP, MTA + GBR, and MTA + BMP + GBR caused less inflammation, and an increase of both collagen deposition and bone deposition as seen on both histological and morphometric analysis.

Sciadicleithrum juruparii n. sp. is described from the gills of the Neotropical cichlid fish Satanoperca jurupari (Heckel) caught in the Guamá River, in the delta of the Amazon River, at Belém, Pará State, Brazil. Diagnostic characters of the new species are a basally articulated male copulatory organ with clockwise coils and an accessory piece; a ventral bar with a median process; similar hooklets; vagina in the form of a sclerotised tube; and a sinistral vaginal aperture with a sclerotised papilla lying in a small surface depression. It is the only species of Sciadicleithrum Kritsky, Thatcher & Boeger, 1989 with a medial projection on the ventral bar.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of mast cells in a series of odontogenic tumors. Forty-five cases of odontogenic tumors were investigated using immunohistochemistry for mast cell triptase, and differences between groups were statistically evaluated. Mast cells were present in 96% of odontogenic tumors. Mast cells present in solid ameloblastoma were observed in the tumor stroma surrounding more solid and follicular epithelial islands, with or without squamous metaplasia. The odontogenic mixoma showed few mast cells. In odontogenic tumors with a cystic structure, the mast cells were distributed throughout all areas of the lesions, mainly in keratocystic odontogenic tumor. In addition, the total density of mast cells between all odontogenic tumors showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). A greater mast cells distribution was found in keratocystic odontogenic tumor in relation to adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (p < 0.01), and when the unicystic ameloblastoma and keratocistic odontogenic tumor were compared to the odontogenic myxoma (p < 0.05). Syndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumor showed a higher mean of mast cells when compared with the other tumors of the sample. Mast cells values presented by syndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumor were significantly greater than those of the sporadic keratocystic odontogenic tumor that were not associated with the syndrome (p = 0.03). Mast cells are probably one of the major components of the stromal scaffold in odontogenic tumors. We found significant differences of mast cells between syndrome nonsyndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumors, although their distribution did not seem to have any influence on the biologic behavior of benign odontogenic tumors.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) are benign but locally aggressive lesions of the gnathic skeleton with high propensity to recur following surgical treatment. High proliferative activity of KCOTs epithelial cells is considered as one of the factors contributing to their aggressive clinical behavior. Aggressive growth within the jaws, tendency to invade surrounding anatomical structures and occasional malignant alteration are the features that distinguish KCOTs from other types of odontogenic tumors. Due to their unique clinical and biological features, KCOTs still present an important problem in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This is especially true when a choice of the most appropriate treatment modality should be made. Establishing balance between effective reduction of recurrence risk and selection of a less aggressive surgical procedure is an issue that should be carefully considered for each individual patient.

Objective: To describe a case series of intraoral granular cell tumors in terms of clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features., Method and Materials: Nine cases of intraoral granular cell tumors were described in terms of clinical features (patient sex and age, anatomical location, size, type, time to clinical progression, and lesion treatment), histologic features (necrosis, spindling, vesicular nuclei with large nucleoli, increased mitotic activity, high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio, and pleomorphism) and immunohistochemical features using S-100, CD68, neurofilament protein, desmin, and galectin-1., Results: Studied patients were mostly women with a mean age of 32 years. Lesions arose as solitary nodules on the tongue, with size ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 cm. Mean time to evolution was 21.83 months. All cases were treated by surgical excision. Two cases were classified as atypical and seven as benign. All cases presented immunoreactivity for S-100, CD68, and galectin-1, and there was no reactivity for desmin and neurofilament protein., Conclusion: General practitioners should consider granular cell tumors during the differential diagnosis of nodular lesions on the tongue. Results suggest that histologic criteria may be used to distinguish between benign and atypical intraoral granular cell tumors. Finally, analysis of the clinical profile and the use of immunohistochemical markers may facilitate diagnosis and clarify the histogenesis of these lesions.

Satanoperca jurupari (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae) is reported for the first time to be parasitized by the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) rarus Travassos, Artigas and Pereira, 1928, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) sp., larvae of Raphidascaroides sp. and Anisakidae gen. sp., and by the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) paraguayensis Machado Filho (Rev Bras Biol 19:379-381, 1959).

Mucolipidosis type III is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder, which is part of a group of storage diseases as a result of inborn error of lysosomal enzyme metabolism. It is characterized by the gradual onset of signs and symptoms affecting the physical and mental development as well as visual changes, heart, skeletal and joint. Although oral findings associated with mucolipidosis type II have been extensively reported, there is a shortage of information on mucolipidosis type III. This paper presents radiological and histological findings of multiple radiolucent lesions associated with impacted teeth in the jaw of a 16 year-old youngster with mucolipidosis type III.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of CD1a-positive Langerhans cells and their relationship with E-cadherin in minor salivary gland tumors., Methods: Twenty-seven minor salivary gland tumors were investigated using immunohistochemistry for CD1a and E-cadherin., Results: A significant difference regarding the mean density of CD1a-positive Langerhans cells was observed between pleomorphic adenomas and malignant tumors studied (P = 0.001). No CD1a-positive cells were detected in most cases (n = 5) of cystic adenoid carcinomas. CD1a-positive cells were detected in one mucoepidermoid carcinoma case, and six low-grade polymorphous adenocarcinomas cases. Comparison of the mean density of CD1a-positive cells between the three malignant tumors showed no significant difference (P = 0.127). No significant difference was observed in the presence of E-cadherin between tumors (P = 0.73), but it was detected in 24 cases., Conclusions: The lack of CD1a-positive in malignant salivary gland tumors facilitates the neoplastic development and suggests that these cells might be useful as auxiliary diagnostic and prognostic tool in minor salivary gland tumors. Objective: This article aimed to study the effect of LED Phototherapy (LED-PHT) (?630?nm or ?850?nm) on mast cells on the dorsum of the tongue of rodents., Background Data: Vasodilatation is one of the reported effects of laser light on tissues. Laser light is able to induce the release of mediators responsible for vasodilatation, such as those produced by mast cells. Mast cells are also related to some diseases such as hay fever., Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were divided into three groups: I, Control; II, IR-LED (?850?nm, 21.9?J/cm(2), 73 sec; and III, red-LED (?630?nm, 21.9?J/cm(2), 73?sec). The specimens were taken after, 20, 45, and 60?min following irradiation. The specimens were routinely processed; stained with toluidine blue; and then total, degranulated, and non-degranulated mast cells were counted and statistical analysis performed., Results: Both LED irradiated subjects showed significant difference when compared to the control subjects on the total number mast cells (p<0.001, ANOVA), degranulated mast cells (p<0.001, ANOVA), and non-degranulated mast cells (p<0.001, ANOVA). Comparing the two groups of LED irradiated subjects, significant difference was observed regarding the total number of cells (p<0.001, paired t-test) and degranulated mast cells (p<0.001, paired t-test) with a greater number of these cells noted in the IR-LED group. On the other hand, Red-LED irradiated subjects showed a significantly greater number of non-degranulated mast cells (p=0.001, paired t-test)., Conclusions: Our results lead us to conclude that both red and IR-LED light caused increased mast cell degranulation and that IR-LED light resulted in a greater number of mast cells.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate, histologically, the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) (λ660 nm) on DMBA chemically induced lesions of the oral mucosa of hamsters., Background Data: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. It is aggressive, highly proliferative, invasive, and metastatic. There is evidence that LLLT similarly affects neoplasic and non-neoplasic cells., Methods: Cancerous lesions were induced on the cheek pouch of 15 golden Syrian hamsters by using DMBA 3 times a week for 8 weeks. At the end of the cancer induction (8 weeks), animals in G1 were killed and the presence of tumors confirmed. Animals in G3 were irradiated (λ660 nm, 30 mW, CW, Ø=3 mm, area: 0.07 cm(2), 424 mW/cm(2), 133 sec, 56.4(2)J/ cm(2), 4J) at every other day for 4 weeks. G2 received no interventions for the same period. Samples were taken and underwent histological analysis by light microscopy., Results: GI showed 100% well-differentiated SCC. G2 showed 20% moderately differentiated and 80% well-differentiated SCC. G3 showed 40% well-differentiated, 40% poorly differentiated, and 20% moderately differentiated SCC. Significant differences (p=0.02) in the amount of well-differentiated SCC were seen between G1 and G3 and between G3 and G2 (p=0.04). Significant difference was also seen between G3 and G1 and G2 with regard to the amount of poorly differentiated tumors (p=0.04)., Conclusions: It is concluded that LLLT, within the parameters used in the present study, caused a significant progression of the severity of SCC in the oral cavity of hamsters.

Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) lanfrediae sp. nov. is described from the intestine of the freshwater fish Satanoperca jurupari (Heckel) (Cichlidae) from the Guamá River, state of Pará, Brazil. The prevalence in fish (n = 59) was 27% with intensity of one-124 (mean 16) nematodes per fish. The new species is characterized mainly by the markedly larger size of ventricular appendix in relation to the oesophagus, presence of short male caudal alae, 14-16 subventral pairs of preanal papillae and six pairs of postanal papillae.

We carried out a histological analysis on bone defects grafted with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) treated or not with laser, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), and guided bone regeneration (GBR). Benefits of the use of MTA, laser, BMPs, and GBR on bone repair are well known, but there is no report on their association with laser light. Ninety rats were divided into 10 groups each subdivided into 3. Defects on G II and I were filled with the blood clot. G II was further irradiated with LED. G III and IV were filled with MTA; G IV was further irradiated with laser. G V and VI, the defects filled with MTA and covered with a membrane (GBR). G VI was further irradiated with laser. G VII and VIII, BMPs were added to the MTA and group VIII further irradiated with laser. G IX and X, the MTA + BMP graft was covered with a membrane (GBR). G X was further irradiated with laser. Laser light (λ = 850 nm, 150 mW, 4 J/cm(2) ) was applied over the defect at 48-h intervals and repeated for 15 days. Specimens were processed, cut and stained with H&E and Sirius red and underwent histological analysis. Subjects on group X were irradiated. The results showed different tissue response on all groups during the experimental time. Major changes were seen on irradiated subjects and included marked deposition of new bone in advanced maturation. This study used panoramic radiographs to evaluate the presence of radiographic changes in the jaws of a population who had sickle cell disease (SCD). The authors compared the frequency of findings between subjects with and without SCD. Panoramic radiographs of 71 subjects with SCD (36 with HbSS and 35 with HbSC) and 52 healthy controls (HbAA) were evaluated for the presence of the following radiographic alterations: radiopaque areas, increased spacing of bony trabeculae, horizontal arrangement of bony trabeculae, and absence of mandibular canal corticalization. The control group had a significantly smaller number of all the radiographic features evaluated. Differences were not statistically significant between the groups with HbSS and HbSC, except for more trabecular spacing in the molar region in the HbSS genotype, suggesting a possible correlation between radiographic findings and disease presentation., (© 2011 Special Care Dentistry Association and Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Failures in the sealing of the tooth apex have been considered to be responsible for most of the failures of apical surgeries. The Er:YAG laser has been proposed as an alternative for the use of rotator instruments in surgical endodontics due to its precision, lack of vibration, less post-operative discomfort, bacterial reduction, and less stress for patients and professionals. Following approval by the ethics committee, 12 extracted human canines without previous endodontic treatment with anatomically normal roots and free from apical lesions were washed in running tap water and disinfected. The teeth were sectioned axially at the crown-root junction and submitted to routine endodontic treatment. The apical limit was set at 1 mm before the apical foramen. The root canals were routinely filled with Gutta-Percha points and Sealer 26 and were randomly distributed into two groups (n = 6). In group I, apicectomy was performed with the Er:YAG laser (KAVO KEY Laser II®, Germany, λ = 2.940 nm, pulsed mode, 2051 tip, with air spray cooling, 250 mJ/15 Hz). Apical cut was performed of perpendicular mode 3 mm from the apical foramen. In group II, the same procedures and the same sequence as above was used, varying only the parameters of the Er:YAG laser (400 mJ/6 Hz). Sealing of the cervical end the apex was carried out with acrylic resin; the roots were covered by a layer of epoxy glue and two layers of nail polish. The specimens were divided into groups and fixed, by the cervical third, on wax. Impermeabilization of the residual root apical third was performed following the same procedures used in the cervical third but the residual apex was left free from the impermeabilization. After that, the roots were immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution and placed in a bacteriological oven for 48 h and then washed in running tap water for 2 h. The samples were sagittally split into two parts. The segments were visually observed and the one showing the greatest level of dye leakage was selected and kept in an individual container and coded accordingly. Apical staining was measured using a stereoscopic magnifying glass, a compass, and a caliper. The measurement was performed by three endodontists, previously calibrated, and unaware of the sample coding. The results showed that group I showed the greatest level of dye leakage. There was a significantly difference between the groups (p = 0.001). It is concluded that the apicectomies carried out with 400 mJ/6 Hz showed the smallest infiltration value.

A case of human intraocular dirofilariasis is reported from northern Brazil. The nematode was morphologically and phylogenetically related to Dirofilaria immitis but distinct from reference sequences, including those of D. immitis infesting dogs in the same area. A zoonotic Dirofilaria species infesting wild mammals in Brazil and its implications are discussed.

Introduction: Keratocystic odontogenic tumours raise particular interest, because of their high recurrence rate and association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome., Objective: To analyze the clinical and histopathological features of all cases diagnosed as keratocystic odontogenic tumour in a Brazilian population., Methods: A total of 64 keratocystic odontogenic tumours, arising in forty-six patients, were evaluated using the following parameters: association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, gender, age at first diagnosis, race, anatomical location, symptoms, radiographic features, history of recurrence, association with teeth, and treatment., Results: Keratocystic odontogenic tumours were more frequent among women than men (1:0.84). The mean patient age was 31.5 years (SD: +/- 16.6). Ten tumours (16.4%) involved the maxilla and 51 (83.6%) the mandible. Swelling (n = 12; 46.1%), followed by pain and swelling (n = 4; 15.3%), were most common clinical manifestations. A unilocular radiotransparency with well-defined margins was the main radiographic finding (n = 29; 87.8%). A significant association was observed between the multilocular radiographic pattern and recurrence (p < 0.05, Fisher's Test). Sixty-one (95.3%) tumours were treated by surgical enucleation followed by bone curettage, and the recurrence rate was 13% (n = 6). This study showed that the keratocystic odontogenic tumours relapsed within a mean period of 25-36 months., Conclusion: Despite the results of this study being similar to previous reports found in the literature, it provides an important insight about keratocystic odontogenic tumours in a Brazilian population.

A male nematode was extracted from iris fibers of a man from the Brazilian Amazon region. This nematode belonged to the genus Pelecitus but was distinct from the 16 known species in this genus. Similarities with Pelecitus spp. from neotropical birds suggested an avian origin for this species.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate, by light microscopy, the effects of laser phototherapy (LPT) at 780 nm or a combination of 660 and 790 nm, on the inflammatory process of the rat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) induced by carrageen., Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are frequent in the population and generally present an inflammatory component. Previous studies have evidenced positive effects of laser phototherapy on TMDs. However, its mechanism of action on the inflammation of the TMJ is not known yet., Materials and Methods: Eighty-five Wistar rats were divided into 9 groups: G1, Saline; G2, Saline + LPT IR; G3, Saline + LPT IR + R; G4, Carrageenan; G5, Carrageenan + LPT IR; G6, Carrageenan + LPT IR + R; G7, previous LPT + Carrageenan; G8, previous LPT + carrageenan + LPT IR; and G9, previous LPT + carrageenan + LPT IR + R, and then subdivided in subgroups of 3 and 7 days. After animal death, specimens were taken, routinely cut and stained with HE, Sirius Red, and Toluidine Blue. Descriptive analysis of components of the TMJ was done. The synovial cell layers were counted., Results: Injection of saline did not produced inflammatory reaction and the irradiated groups did not present differences compared to nonirradiated ones. After carrageenan injection, intense inflammatory infiltration and synovial cell layers proliferation were observed. The infrared irradiated group presented less inflammation and less synovial cell layers number compared to other groups. Previous laser irradiation did not improve the results., Conclusion: It was concluded that the LPT presented positive effects on inflammatory infiltration reduction and accelerated the inflammation process, mainly with IR laser irradiation. The number of synovial cell layers was reduced on irradiated group.

Aim: We aimed to assess the use of two wavelengths on the healing of infected wounds., Background: Infection is the most significant cause of impaired wound repair or healing. Several therapeutic approaches are used for improving wound healing including the use of different light sources, such as the laser. Some wavelengths yield positive photobiological effects on the healing process., Material and Methods: The backs of 24 young adult male Wistar rats under general anesthesia were shaved and cleaned, and a 1 by 1 cm cutaneous wound was created with a scalpel and left untreated. The wounds were infected with Staphylococcus aureus, and the rats were randomly divided into two sets of four subgroups with three animals in each subgroup: control, red laser light, infrared laser light, and red + infrared laser light. Laser phototherapy was carried out with a diode [λ680 nm/790 nm, power (P) = 30 mW/40 mW, continuous wave laser, Ø = 3 mm, power density (P) = 424 and 566 mW/cm(2), time = 11.8/8.8 sec, E = 0.35 J] and started immediately after surgery and repeated every other day for 7 d. Laser light was applied on four points around the wounded area (5 J/cm(2)). The animals were killed either 8 or 15 d after contamination. Specimens were taken, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned and stained for histological analysis., Results: Histological analysis showed that control subjects had a lower amount of blood vessels when compared with irradiated subjects. Irradiated subjects had more advanced resolution of inflammation compared with controls. Irradiated subjects also showed a more intense expression of the collagen matrix. The collagen fibers were mostly mature and well organized in these subjects at the end of the experimental time especially when both wavelengths were used., Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that laser phototherapy has a positive effect on the healing of infected wounds, particularly with the association of λ680 + λ790 nm.

The aim of this study was to investigate the histopathological features of radicular cysts (RCs) diagnosed in a Brazilian population. Seventy-three cases of RCs, from a total of 1480 biopsies diagnosed between 2001 and 2008 at the Laboratory of Oral Surgical Pathology of the Dental School of the Federal University of Bahia were investigated regarding their histopathological features. Morphological results showed that exocytosis (n = 50), spongiosis (n = 40), acanthosis (n = 28), atrophic epithelium (n = 27) and apoptotic bodies (n = 21) were the most common findings. Other morphological findings included: foamy macrophages (n = 10), Russell's bodies (n = 7), cholesterol crystals (n = 7) and glandular-like odontogenic epithelial rests (n = 1). Evidence of exogenous material was seen in 16 samples. It was concluded that the clinical and histopathological findings observed in Brazilian patients were comparable with those described for other populations.

The aim of this case report is to present a histologically diagnosed oral lichen planus excised by the CO2 laser. Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease of unknown etiology. Different treatments have been used to manage this condition. A 46 year-old female was referred to the Laser Clinic of the Dental School of the Federal University of Bahia to excise a lesion characterized by white patches on the oral mucosa, which was causing pain and burning sensation and had not respond to treatment with triamcinolone and corticosteroids for 3 months. CO2 laser was used to remove the lesion and the conclusive histopathological diagnosis was oral lichen planus. The patient was followed up over 1 year with no signs of lesion recurrence. The use of the CO2 laser was found to be useful and effective to treat lichen planus.

LCs and MCs are known to be directly influenced by UV radiation. This study investigated the presence of Langerhans cells (LCs) and mast cells (MCs) in actinic cheilitis (AC) exhibiting epithelial dysplasia (ED). Using immunohistochemistry for CD1a and mast cell tryptase, LCs and MCs density was assessed in 35 cases of AC with different degrees of ED. LCs were found in 32 cases of AC whereas MCs were found in all cases. There was an increase in LCs density irrespective of degree of ED when the cases were compared to normal lip mucosa (P = 0.04343). No statistical difference in LCs density was observed regarding the different degrees of dysplasia (P > 0.05). Significant difference in MCs density between mild and moderate dysplasia and normal lip mucosa was found (P < 0.05). No significant correlation between LCs and MCs was seen (P = 0.1258). Although no correlation could be established between LCs and MCs and the different degrees of ED; it is possible that the accumulation of LCs plays an immunostimulatory and protective role in the defense against progression of dysplasia. Further studies are necessary to determine the role of MCs in the development of AC.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs) are distinct odontogenic lesions frequently affecting the jawbones. They may be associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), and may exhibit disorders involving the extracellular matrix. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunolocalisation of laminin-1 in 20 cases of KOTs in order to contribute to the characterization of this protein, which is little studied in odontogenic tumors. Our results showed laminin-1 in all 20 KOTs studied; its labelling intensity was weak in three cases (15%), moderate in five (25%) and strong in 12 cases (60%). Laminin-1 immunolocalisation was predominantly continuous in 18 (90%) KOTs, including areas of acanthosis, subepithelial split and epithelial buds. Weak immunolabelling was observed in regions exhibiting an inflammatory process, especially in the case of intense inflammation. These findings suggest that laminin-1 does not participate in biological processes such as cystic epithelium-cystic wall separation or the formation of epithelial islands in KOTs. Furthermore, the discontinuous and weak labelling of this protein in the basement membrane of these tumors is probably a consequence of the inflammatory process in the tumor stroma., (Copyright © 2009 Elsevier GmbH. Objectives: The aim of this work is to report some cases of surgical removal of hyperkeratotic lesions of the oral cavity with the CO(2) laser., Background: Hyperkeratosis is an abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum caused by increased deposition of keratin, and its histopathologic features show wide variations. These changes are significant because they determine different biologic behavior. Several techniques are used to treat these lesions, including scalpel incision, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, and some drugs. The use of surgical lasers has been proposed as an effective way of treating such lesions safely. The CO(2) laser is the most used laser on the oral cavity because of its affinity for water and high absorption by the oral mucosa. Several benefits of the use of the CO(2) laser are reported in the literature in regard to surgical procedures carried out on the oral cavity., Patients and Methods: All patients had histopathologic diagnosis of hyperkeratosis and mild epithelial dysplasia and were routinely prepared for surgery under local anesthesia. The surgical procedures were carried out by using a CO(2) laser (Sharplan 20 C; Laser Industries, Tel Aviv, Israel, λ10,600 nm, φ∼2 mm, CW/RSP). The beam was focused to delimit each lesion, and then lesions were excised, and the removed specimens were sent for histopathology. At the end of the surgery, the beam was used in a defocused manner to promote better hemostasis. Neither sutures nor dressings were used after the surgery. No medication but mouthwashes was prescribed to all patients in the postoperative period., Conclusions: The use of the CO(2) laser does not reduce the risk of relapses of the lesion, but it is an easy-to-use technique and results in both a quick surgical procedure and trouble-free postoperative period and may be safely used in dental practice.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of two phototherapies, laser and polarized light, on diode laser (970lambda nm) wounds., Background Data: Lasers have been used in surgery, and some wavelengths may cause thermal damage to the tissue and affect healing. Several studies have shown that some wavelengths are effective in improving healing. Coherent and noncoherent light have been successfully used on the modulation of biological phenomena of several origins., Animals and Methods: Thirty-one Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups (GI to GIII). A 20-mm x 2-mm wound was created on the dorsum of each animal with a diode laser (Sirolaser, Sirona, Bensheim, Germany). Group GI acted as control. On GII, laser light (lambda655 nm, 30 mW, phi approximately 3 mm, 12 J/cm(2)) was used and on GIII illumination with polarized light (lambda400-2000 nm, 40 mW, phi approximately 5.5 cm, 12 J/cm(2)) was used, every other day (GII) or daily (GIII) for 7 days. The animals were killed at 0, 7, and 14 days after surgery. Specimens were taken, routinely processed, stained and imunnomarked [HE (hematoxylin-eosin), sirius red, alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA)], and underwent histological analysis., Results: GII showed better response at day 14 when re-epithelialization was in a more advanced stage. The number of myofibroblasts was significantly different over the healing time (7 to 14 days); this number was smaller than that observed on G1. On GIII at day 7, the number of myofibroblasts was significantly higher than for GII. At day 14, a more pronounced deposition of collagen matrix was also seen, and inflammation was discrete and more advanced for GIII., Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the effect of the use of laser light was more evident at early stages of healing and that the use of polarized light improved the resolution of the inflammatory reaction, increased the deposition of collagen, increased the number of myofibroblasts, and quickened re-epithelialization during the experimental time.

Background: An inflammatory component consisting of cells and chemical mediators may influence the proliferation and dissemination of the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In the present study, we evaluated the possible relationship between Ki-67, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and COX-2 in OSCCs. In addition, the immunodetection of these proteins was associated with different histological grades of malignancy, including invasive and in situ tumors., Methods: Twenty-seven OSCC cases were examined by light microscopy using criteria adopted WHO, and immunohistochemistry for Ki-67, CD68, and COX-2 using EnVision System in invasive and in situ lesions. Immunohistochemical detection of these proteins was assessed and scored for COX-2, and results were compared with their histological grades of malignancy., Results: A correlation between Ki-67, COX-2, and CD68 was not found. Histological grade of malignancy (HDM) was associated with the Ki-67 immunostaining (P = 0.00), but this was not observed regarding both CD68 (P = 0.51) and COX-2 (P = 0.89). Furthermore, there was a COX-2 overexpression in 62.96% of the sample, and a high density of TAMs in both OSCCs and in situ carcinomas., Conclusions: Imunolabeling for Ki-67 was directly correlated with less-differentiated tumors, suggesting that this marker may contribute to understand the biological behavior of OSCC, and help to distinguish risk groups of OSCC. Furthermore, the lack of correlation between Ki-67, COX-2, and CD68 indicates that the latter two markers may play a pivotal role in oral carcinogenesis. However, further studies are needed to clarify their contribution for cell proliferation and tumor differentiation.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to use Raman spectroscopy to measure levels of CaPi in muscles under occlusal wear and treated with laser phototherapy (LPT) or muscle-relaxant therapy or both on rodents., Background: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders is multifactorial. Malocclusion may influence the masticatory muscles, causing fatigue. A major type of fatigue is the metabolic, caused by the increased accumulation of metabolites such as inorganic phosphate. Raman spectroscopy allows nondestructive analysis of the biochemical composition of tissues., Methods: The 30 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: occlusal wear (G-1), occlusal wear + LPT (G-2), and occlusal wear + muscle relaxant (G-3). Ten untreated animals were used for baseline data. Under intraperitoneal general anesthesia, animals of groups 1, 2, and 3 had unilateral amputation of molar cusps to simulate an occlusal-wear situation. The masseter muscle of G-2 received LPT (lambda830 nm, 4 J/cm(2), 40 mW, phi approximately 2 mm) after the procedure and repeated every other day for 14-30 days. Animals of G-3 were treated with a daily injection of dantrolene (2.5 mg/kg in 0.5 ml of H(2)O) beginning 24 h after cusp removal. Animals were killed with an overdose of general anesthetics at days 14 and 30 after cusps removal, and the ipsilateral masseter muscle was excised and divided into two parts. One part was routinely processed and underwent histologic analysis; the other was kept in liquid nitrogen for Raman spectroscopy. The mean value of the intensity of the peak 958 per centimeter was determined., Results: No morphologic changes were seen. Raman analysis showed significantly less Raman intensity in the laser group at 30 days (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Occlusal wear did not caused morphologic alterations in the masseter muscle but resulted in changes of the levels of CaP(i) that were less compromising when the laser light was used.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effects of laser phototherapy (LPT) on cutaneous flaps on diabetic rats., Background: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high blood glucose levels. Its main complications are delayed wound healing, an impaired blood supply, and a decrease in collagen production. Cutaneous flaps are routinely used in several surgical procedures, and most failures are related to poor blood supply. LPT has been studied using several healing models., Animals and Methods: Twelve Wistar rats were randomized into three groups: group 1 (G1; diabetic animals without treatment), group 2 (G2; diabetic animals irradiated with lambda680 nm), and group 3 (G3; diabetic animals irradiated with lambda790 nm). Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin. A 2- x 8-cm cutaneous flap was raised on the dorsum of each animal, and a plastic sheet was introduced between the flap and the bed to cause poor blood supply. Nonirradiated animals acted as controls. The dose per session was 40 J/cm(2). Laser light was applied transcutaneously and fractioned on 16 contact points at the wound margins (16 x 2.5 J/cm(2)). Animal death occurred on day 8 after surgery. Specimens were taken, processed, cut, stained with eosin (HE) and sirius red, and underwent histological analysis., Results: It is shown that accute inflammation was mostly discrete for G3. Chronic inflammation was more evident for G2. Fibroblast number was higher for G3. Angiogenesis was more evident for G3. Necrosis was more evident for G2. Statistical analysis among all groups showed significant differences (p = 0.04) on the level of acute inflammation between G1 and G3, tissue necrosis between G1 and G2 (p = 0.03), chronic inflammation between (p = 0.04), fibroblastic proliferation between G2 and G3 (p = 0.05), and neovascularization between G2 and G3 (p = 0.04)., Conclusion: LPT was effective in increasing angiogenesis as seen on irradiated subjects and was more pronounced when IR laser light was used.

Morphological descriptions of Dirofilaria immitis are scarce. For this reason, we carried out morphological studies using both light and scanning electron microscopy for this filaroid species. Morphometric and morphological data were compatible with previous descriptions of D. immitis , but several anatomical structures are described by scanning electron microscopy for the first time, such as details of the cuticular striations, positioning of amphids, visualization of anal and vulvar opening, descriptions of deirids, lateral line, the pair of phasmids in the posterior end in females, and visualization of a small pair of latero-terminal papillae in the posterior end in males.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess histologically the effect of Laser Photobiomodulation (LPBM) on skin wounds treated with Mitomycin C (MMC)., Background Data: Wound healing occurs because of a competitive mechanism between the synthesis and lyses of collagen. Therefore, any factor that increases the lyses or reduces the synthesis of collagen may result in changes in the healing process. MMC is an antineoplastic drug that inhibits fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and neoangiogenesis. LPBM has been shown to stimulate wound healing, increasing the production of collagen, fibroblastic proliferation, and angiogenesis., Materials and Methods: Forty-eight Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 4 main groups (n = 12): G1--control (G1a--7 d and G1b--14 d); G2--MMC (G2a--7 d and G2b--14 d); G3--MMC + lambda660 nm laser (G3a--7 d and G3b--14 d); and G4--MMC + lambda790 nm laser (G4a--7 d and G4b--14 d). Under general anesthesia, one excisional wound was created on the dorsum of each animal. Two ml of MMC solution was applied to the wound 4 h after surgery for 5 min. LPBM was performed on groups G3 (lambda690 nm; 20 J/cm(2); 30 mW; Phi = 2 mm) and G4 (lambda790 nm; 20 J/cm(2); 40 mW; Phi = 2 mm), starting immediately after the application of the MMC and repeated every other day during the experimental period. Laser light was applied transcutaneously at 4 equidistant points on the wound margin (4 x 5 J/cm(2), 20 J/cm(2)/session). The specimens were routinely cut and processed to wax. The slides were stained with HE and Sirius red. Computerized hystomorphometry was performed., Results: LPBM resulted in reduced inflammation and an increase in both fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition., Conclusion: The use of LPBM improves wound healing in subjects treated with MMC.

Aim: We evaluated histologically the differences in the healing of cutaneous wounds on nourished or undernourished rats following laser phototherapy (LPT) (20 or 40 J/cm2)., Background: Wound healing occurs due to a competitive mechanism between the synthesis and lysis of collagen. Any factor that increases the lysis or reduces the synthesis of collagen may change the healing process. Nutritional deficiencies have a great effect on wound healing., Methods: Fifty nourished or undernourished Wistar rats had one standardized wound created on the dorsum and were divided into 10 subgroups: Control (standard diet); Control [Northeastern Brazilian basic diet (DBR)]; Standard diet+LPT (lambda635 nm; spatial average energy fluence (SAEF) 20 J/cm2); Standard diet+LPT (lambda635 nm; SAEF 40 J/cm2); Standard diet+LPT (lambda780 nm; SAEF 20 J/cm2); Standard diet+LPT (lambda780 nm; SAEF 40 J/cm2); DBR+LPT (lambda635 nm; SAEF 20 J/cm2); DBR+LPT (lambda635 nm; SAEF 40 J/cm2); DBR+LPT (lambda780 nm; SAEF 20 J/cm2); DBR+LPT (lambda780 nm; SAEF 40 J/cm2). The first application of the treatment was carried out immediately and repeated daily for seven days. The specimens were routinely processed to wax, cut, stained with H&E and Sirius Red stains, and analyzed using light microscopy. The analyses included re-epithelization, inflammatory infiltrate, and fibroblastic proliferation. Sirius Red stained slides were used to perform descriptive analyses of the collagen fibers., Results: The results showed that LPT with lambda635 wavelength was more effective for the treatment of undernourished subjects, treated with either LPT with lambda730 nm with SAEF of 20 J/cm2 or lambda780 nm with SAEF of 40 J/cm2., Conclusion: Nutritional status influenced the progression of the healing process as well as the quality of the healed tissue. In addition, the use of both wavelengths resulted in a positive biomodulatory effect on both nourished and undernourished subjects.

The aim of this study was to evaluate computerized tomography (CT) density patterns of solid ameloblastomas (SA), unicystic ameloblastomas (UA), and sporadic and multiple keratocystic odontogenic tumors (SK and MK, respectively). A region of interest (ROI) was delimited corresponding to almost the entire lesional area on each axial slice of 25 CT exams. For each ROI, CT values (HU(ROI)) and heterogeneity (HTG(ROI)) were recorded and compared among lesion groups as well as among central and peripheral slices of the same lesion. The average HU(ROI) were: SA 35.9 +/- 12.6; UA 31.0 +/- 6.0; SK 28.4 +/- 10.5; and MK 30.5 +/- 20.6. SK and MK had the lowest CT values and highest heterogeneity. SA and UA did not show statistical difference for HU(ROI). However, SA had greater HTG(ROI) values. SA presented a different pattern when the central slices were compared with the peripheral slices. HU(ROI) was higher, whereas HTG(ROI) was lower, among the central slices of SA.

A 42-year-old woman had a sessile swelling that involved the maxillary gingiva corresponding to the right canine and premolar area. Clinical examination showed a painless small nodule (10 mm in diameter) located between the right maxillary canine and premolar. The lesion was vesicular, sessile, and slightly compressible on palpation. Microscopic examination of the lesion (following an excisional biopsy) showed cystic spaces covered by an epithelium lining that consisted of cuboidal and squamoid cells intermingled with clear cells. These morphologic findings were consistent with gingival cyst of the adult. Immunohistochemical technique against cytokeratins revealed that the epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratins No. 7, 8, 13, 14, and 19. Two years after removal, no recurrence was reported.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) is a benign cystic tumor that affects the jaw bones and may be associated with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). Twenty-five cases diagnosed as KOT, including primary and recurrent tumors and those associated with NBCCS, were submitted to immunohistochemical study for analysis of cytokeratins (CKs) 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 18 and 19. The results showed CK13 immunostained on the intermediate layers and upper cells. CK14 was expressed in all epithelial layers and in those areas where inflammation and subepithelial splits were present; this protein was preserved within the basal cells. CK 18 was expressed mainly in the basal layer, whereas CK19 was expressed mainly on the intermediate and superficial layers. The remaining CKs tested were not immuoreactive. The status of maturation of cytokeratin seems to be altered on KOTs, and this is not distinct when different tumors are compared.

A variety of injectable permanent fillers have been used in orofacial tissues for cosmetic purposes. Most of these substances seem to be well tolerated but adverse reactions have been reported. Foreign body granulomas are a rare adverse reaction to injectable permanent fillers. The authors report the unusual case of a 56-year-old woman with a foreign body granuloma located exclusively in the oral cavity that was due to injection of a permanent filler.

Objective: To analyze the clinical and histopathologic features of all cases diagnosed as lipomas in the oral cavity in a Brazilian population., Method and Materials: From 2002 to 2006, 26 cases of intraoral lipoma were studied. Clinical features obtained from biopsy records and microscopic slides were reviewed according to the World Health Organization and other cases previously described., Results: Mean age was 54.6 years (range, 29 to 91 years) with predilection for women. The buccal mucosa was the most common location (n= 9), followed by the tongue (n= 7), lower lip (n= 4), floor of the mouth (n= 3), retro-molar area (n= 2), and buccalsulcus(n= 1).Histologically, the lesions were defined as classic lipomas(n= 15),fibrolipomas(n= 7), intramuscular lipoma(n= 2), spindle-cell lipoma(n= 1), and sialolipoma(n= 1). Follow-up information was available in 20 cases. No case recurred during a 6- to 12-month period., Conclusion: The benign nature of intraoral lipomas is supported by its bland histopathologic appearance and the absence of recurrences following complete local excision

Benign cementoblastoma (BC) is a relatively rare odontogenic neoplasm characterized by the formation of a mass of cementum-like tissue connected to the root of a tooth. Clinically, BC has a slow and constant growth pattern, frequently accompanied by pain, and it promotes volume expansion on both the vestibular and lingual surfaces. Radiographically, it appears attached to the apical or lateral portion of the root of a tooth root as a densely radiopaque, well-circumscribed mass surrounded by a thick and uniform radiolucent halo. Treatment usually consists of surgical tooth extraction along with the attached calcified mass or endodontic treatment of the associated tooth, enucleation of the tumor and osseous curettage. In this article, the clinical, radiographic and histopathological features of one case of BC are presented and the variations of the cases cited in the literature are discussed.

Russell bodies (RBs) changes in chronic apical lesions have rarely been reported in the literature. We describe a case of a periapical lesion abundantly and extensively composed of RB. Microscopic examination showed accumulation of plasma cells containing globular, spherical, polygonal, and eosinophilic structures against fibrous connective tissue. Initial diagnostic considerations based on a smaller magnification included hypersecretory plasmocytoma, although there was no evidence of infiltrative growth, mitotic activity, nuclear atypia, or cellular pleomorphism. Then, a panel of immunohistochemical markers was applied and the cells showed positivity with both kappa and lambda chains demonstrating their polyclonal origin. The extensive accumulation of RBs involving the periapical region represents an unreported and significant histologic change, as it was mimicking a malignant neoplasm.

Objective: The aim of this investigation was to compare, by light microscopy, the effects of the use of laser photobiomodulation (LPBM) and polarized light (PL) on second-degree burns on rodents., Background Data: Burns are severe injuries that result in the loss of tissue fluids, destruction of tissues, infection, and shock. With severe and widespread third-degree burns death may occur. Several light sources have been suggested as being effective for improving wound healing., Materials and Methods: Forty five rats were used in this study. A second-degree burn was created on the dorsum of each animal, and the animals were divided into four groups: PL (400-2000 nm, 40 mW, 2.4 J/cm(2)/min); LPBM-1 (780 nm, 35/40 mW, theta approximately 2 mm, 4 x 5 J/cm(2)); LPBM-2 (660 nm, 35/40 mW, theta approximately 2 mm, 4 x 5 J/cm(2)); and untreated animals acted as controls. The treatment was started immediately post-burn at four points around the burned area (laser: 5 J/cm(2) per site). The illumination with PL was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Treatments were repeated at 24-h intervals for 7 d. The animals were sacrifice at 3, 5, and 7 d post-burn. The specimens were routinely cut and stained and analyzed by light microscopy using hematoxylin and eosin and Sirius red., Results: The analysis of the results demonstrated that the damaged tissue was able to efficiently absorb and process the light at all tested wavelengths. LPBM at 660 nm showed better results at early stages of wound healing. However, the use of 780-nm laser light had beneficial effects throughout the experimental period, with the animals growing newly-formed tissue similar to normal dermis., Conclusion: Despite our findings that the use of both types of light energy improved the healing of second-degree burns at the early stages, long-term assessment is needed to verify if this improvement will influence the final results of treatment.

Objective: The aim of the present investigation was to histologically assess the effect of laser photobiomodulation (LBPM) on the repair of autologous bone grafts in a rodent model., Background Data: A major problem in modern dentistry is the recovery of bone defects caused by trauma, surgical procedures, or pathologies. Several types of biomaterials have been used to improve the repair of these defects. These materials are often associated with procedures of guided bone regeneration (GBR)., Materials and Methods: Twenty four animals were divided into four groups: group I (control); group II (LPBM of the bone graft); group III (bone morphogenetic proteins [BMPs] + bone graft); and group IV (LPBM of the bed and the bone graft + BMPs). When appropriate the bed was filled with lyophilized bovine bone and BMPs used with or without GBR. The animals in the irradiated groups received 10 J/cm(2) per session divided over four points around the defect (4 J/cm(2)), with the first irradiation immediately after surgery, and then repeated seven times every other day. The animals were humanely killed after 40 d., Results: The results showed that in all treatment groups, new bone formation was greater and qualitatively better than the untreated subjects. Control specimens showed a less advanced repair after 40 d, and this was characterized by the presence of medullary tissue, a small amount of bone trabeculi, and some cortical repair., Conclusion: We conclude that LPBM has a positive biomodulatory effect on the healing of bone defects, and that this effect was more evident when LPBM was performed on the surgical bed intraoperatively, prior to the placement of the autologous bone graft.
