A path v 1 , v 2 , … , v m in a graph G is degree-monotone if d e g ( v 1 ) ≤ d e g ( v 2 ) ≤ ⋯ ≤ d e g ( v m ) where d e g ( v i ) is the degree of v i in G . Longest degree-monotone paths have been studied in several recent papers. Here we consider the Ramsey type problem for degree monotone paths. Denote by M k ( m ) the minimum number M such that for all n ≥ M , in any k -edge coloring of K n there is some 1 ≤ j ≤ k such that the graph formed by the edges colored j has a degree-monotone path of order m . We prove several nontrivial upper and lower bounds for M k ( m ) . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the recruitment of Alan Dundes to the University of California, Berkeley, and his work with William Bascom in founding the Folklore Program. Using primarily the William Bascom Papers and the Alan Dundes Papers housed in the Bancroft Library, the paper stresses the personal voice in the history of folklore, which draws on the spoken word of the participants in the making of academic history. Here, the term "spoken word" is used broadly to encompass correspondence, interviews, and personal reflections. The goal is to present the immediacy and the excitement of the participants who created this program in folklore. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researchers have extensively documented a strong and consistent education gradient for mortality, with more highly educated individuals living longer than those with less education. This study contributes to our understanding of the education-mortality relationship by determining the effects of years of education and degree attainment on mortality, and by including non-degree certification, an important but understudied dimension of educational attainment. We use data from the mortality-linked restricted-use files of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) sample ( N = 9821) and Cox proportional hazards models to estimate mortality risk among U.S. adults. Results indicate that more advanced degrees and additional years of education are associated with reduced mortality risk in separate models, but when included simultaneously, only degrees remain influential. Among individuals who have earned a high school diploma only, additional years of schooling (beyond 12) and vocational school certification (or similar accreditation) are both independently associated with reduced risks of death. Degrees appear to be most important for increasing longevity; the findings also suggest that any educational experience can be beneficial. Future research in health and mortality should consider including educational measures beyond a single variable for educational attainment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We show that the set of prefix decidable superwords is closed under finite automata and asynchronous automata transformations. We prove that structures of degrees of finite automata and asynchronous automata transformations contain an atom which consists of prefix decidable superwords with undecidable monadic theory (or undecidable by Buchi). Also we prove that the structure of degrees of asynchronous automata transformations contains an atom which consists of superwords with decidable monadic theory (decidable by Buchi). - Abstract
In Spain, during the academic year 2015-2016, new accredited university degrees have begun to be offered or have passed the first review of the ANECA - the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation. A study has been conducted in order to identify whether in Catalonia, in the second display of the frame of the EHEA-European Higher Education Area, any new degrees and/or specific subjects of corporate communication have appeared and whether they belong -or not- to the area of knowledge of public relations. Results of the study reveal that only a new degree is offered including the term corporate communication in its name, specifically by the University Ramon Llull, while subjects from different degrees that include this expression are scarce. The recent economic recession has impacted substantially on the graduate labour market, with many graduates now struggling to find secure employment in professional careers. In this context, temporary, unpaid ‘internships’ have emerged as increasingly important as a ‘way in’ to work for this group. Yet while there has been much media and policy debate on internships, academic consideration has been scant. This article begins to address this knowledge gap by drawing on a study of interns in a third sector environmental organisation. The research findings reveal that unpaid internships were rationalised through a complex mix of political motivations, career ambitions and lifestyle aims, but these intersected in important ways with social class. These findings are not only of empirical interest, contributing to our knowledge of graduate negotiations of precarity, but also of theoretical value, extending our understanding of young people’s agency and motivations in transitions into work. It seems a cliché to talk about teacher training, more precisely about teacher education policies. For years, the degree course has been under different approaches, transmuting among different objectives, practices, curricula and professional profiles, according to current ideas that correspond to the transitory needs of governments. Currently, some advances have taken place in terms of rethinking degrees from the perspective of access and permanence, but there are still many gaps to be unraveled. Thus, from a bibliographical survey, this study aimed to discuss issues about teaching through a brief overview on its existence, some necessary differences between the degree and the baccalaureate, seeking to consolidate an identity as being endowed with the same rigors as other courses of graduation. And, finally, to point out some policies to strengthen demand, entry and permanence in the area of education in a purposefully superficial perspective in order to provoke debate in broader dimensions in the future. It could be verified then that, despite a very superficial genesis and the cooling of discourses of valuing teaching throughout history, teacher training has always gone through a fine line between emancipatory and mechanistic conceptions, but it continues to resist in the affirmation of its identity is marked by the indispensability of being at the center of debates at the micro and macro levels.

The adjective ‘is justified’ has all the hallmarks of a gradable adjective. But the relationship between gradable uses and straightforward predications of the form ‘x is justified’ has been underexplored by epistemologists. In this paper we undertake to do some ground clearing as a prelude to better understanding this relationship.

In this paper we investigate the dependence of recursively enumerable structures on the equality relation which is fixed to a specific r.e. equivalence relation. We compare r.e. equivalence relations on the natural numbers with respect to the amount of structures they permit to represent from a given class of structures such as algebras, permutations and linear orders. In particular, we show that for various types of structures represented, there are minimal and maximal elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider A to be an artin algebra. We study the degrees of irreducible morphisms between modules in Auslander-Reiten components Γ having only almost split sequences with at most two indecomposable middle terms, that is, α(Γ) ≤ 2. We prove that if f : X → Y is an irreducible epimorphism of finite left degree with X or Y indecomposable, then there exists a module Z ∈ Γ and a morphism φ ∈ ℜn(Z, X)\ℜn+1(Z, X) for some positive integer n such that fφ = 0. In particular, for such components if A is a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field and f = (f1, f2)t : X → Y1 ⊕ Y2 is an irreducible epimorphism of finite left degree then we show that dl(f) = dl(f1) + dl(f2). We also characterize the artin algebras of finite representation type with α(ΓA) ≤ 2 in terms of a finite number of irreducible morphisms with finite degree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LANGUAGE & languages ,ANAPHORA (Linguistics) ,COMPARATIVE grammar ,CLAUSES (Grammar) ,COMPARATIVE clauses (Grammar) - Abstract
This paper argues that a variety of constructions in a variety of languages suggest a deep connection between kinds, manners, and degrees. We articulate a way of thinking about degrees on which this connection is less surprising, rooted in the idea that degrees are kinds of Davidsonian states. This enables us to provide a cross-categorial compositional semantics for a class of expressions that can serve as anaphors to kinds, manners, and degrees, or introduce clauses that further characterize them. A consequence of this is that equatives emerge as a special case of a more general cross-categorial phenomenon. The analysis is undergirded by independently motivated assumptions about free relatives and type shifting. It provides evidence for a view of degrees on which they are significantly more ontologically complex than is typically thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRIMINOLOGY , *CRIMINAL justice education , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *CRIMINAL justice system , *COLLEGE enrollment , *UNDERGRADUATE programs - Abstract
While the discipline of ‘criminology’ has existed within Australian universities for more than half a century, the introduction of discrete ‘criminology’ and justice programmes is much more recent. Little is known, however, about the current state of play when it comes to what a degree in ‘criminology’ actually entails. With growing student enrolments in such programmes, reflecting on the status of these programmes is important in the context of student and employer requirements and expectations. Drawing on the findings of a preliminary study, this paper will explore what it means to study for an undergraduate degree in ‘criminology’ in Australia. Specifically, we will focus on the content, availability and range of ‘criminology’ and justice degrees available in Australia, in order to gain a better understanding of the convergences and divergences across degree programmes, and make some recommendations for future research. This article analyzes the paths of engineering and teaching degree students at the Federal Technological University of Paraná – UTFPR – and at the Federal University of Bahia – UFBA – considering possible factors related to gender that impact these paths. The study was conducted in two stages, the first was quantitative and the second, in which this article was based, qualitative. Mechanical and civil engineering students as well as language and mathematics teaching students from the two universities were interviewed. The study showed that there are differences in the paths and challenges faced by men and women who dare to enter into academic environments socially perceived as the stronghold of the opposite sex. Women in engineering degrees and men in teaching degrees are the most exposed to prejudice and discrimination. In order to promote education in environmental sustainability at higher education institutions and establish action priorities, a detailed analysis of the initial situation is needed, both in terms of courses offered and teaching and assessment strategies implemented. This article presents a methodology that can be used to standardize the evaluation of teaching in environmental sustainability at different universities. We exemplify its application at the University of Alcalá, located in Central Spain. The inventory was conducted using in-house software development for the extraction of environmental sustainability concepts in the degree courses’ syllabi, completed with a survey to faculty members and a manual review to confirm its adjustment to environmental issues. Those finally selected were analyzed in depth. The main results indicate that currently, only a small part of the courses (5.5%) offered at the University explicitly include environmental sustainability content. The grades that concentrate most of the courses are those of Environmental Sciences, Biology, Economics, Tourism and Pharmacy, with very low occurrence in the grades of Education and Health Sciences. It is concluded that further institutional commitment is needed in the definition of medium-term strategies to guide the training and dissemination efforts in order to promote sound environmental education in university courses.

GOVERNMENT policy , *POLITICAL science , *POLITICAL parties , *POLITICAL participation , *RIGHT & wrong - Abstract
It is by now widely if still not quite universally accepted that political sophistication has important effects on many of the ways in which ordinary citizens relate to politics, and the variable has become a regular player in analyses of policy preferences, vote choice, and participation, among other things. There is also a still larger consensus that the best way to measure sophistication is through knowledge, using either straightforwardly factual items or placements of parties or political figures on policy or ideological scales. Willy-nilly, every study deploying such a measure has made a variety of nuts-and-bolts decisions in constructing it. Yet, despite some recent attention to the treatment of don’t-know (DK) responses, the issues behind these decisions remain surprisingly little examined. What exactly makes for the best knowledge based measurement? This paper considers the merits of different types of knowledge items and different ways of doing them up. Are placement- or fact-based items superior? What kinds of placements are best, what kinds of facts? What about the choice of absolute versus relative placements? Viz., are the Republican and Democratic placements on a liberal-conservative scale two distinct items, requiring that the Democrats be placed left of center and the Republicans right of center, or do they boil down to a single item, requiring only that the Democrats be placed to the left of the Republicans? How to treat placements at the midpoint (for absolute measures) or at the same point (for relative ones)? Are they correct or incorrect? Does it help to gauge degrees of correctness, rather than simply scoring items as right or wrong? We give special attention to the treatment of DKs and, relatedly, incorrect answers. Should the former be randomly assigned to response categories, as Mondak suggests? Should the latter be subject to a correction for guessing? We consider these questions by examining the correlations with six criterion variables; a mix of alternative measures, causes, and consequences; and the results from a regression model of the sort popularized by Bartels, where sophistication is the key conditioning variable. Choosing a university degree is a complex process influenced by different variables. This study reports on the reasons provided by students at the Universitat de València to enrol in the Infant and Primary Education degrees during the last decade. This study also identifies possible differences in the motives over time and depending on the degree and gender. Using as a tool for collecting data a questionnaire adapted from existing research in the Spanish context, the motivations of a total of 769 students of these degrees, collected in three stages, were analysed. The outcome allows us to detect that the motivations of the students to choose this kind of Degrees are fundamentally intrinsic, regardless of the moment, the gender of the participants and the degree. However, extrinsic motivations, which are the second most referred to in the case of men, decrease over time, while transcendent ones, the second most referred to type of motivation by women, increase as the decade progresses. These results can help to understand why the demand for these degrees is high and the dropout rate is very low.

The title of this paper summarizes clear tensions produced and being produced by iniciatives to create the European Education Space, focused on the economic nature of education and preventing dealing with political aspects, together with the expectations of some "European citizens" who do have cultural identity and who defend rights obtained on education which at least until today exceed the so called economic rationality. The text starts with a review of recent history, analyses the configuration process of the European Education Space and finishes with a summary of the possible potentials and conflicts: human resources and citizens.

The lattice of honest degrees has been studied extensively since the 1960's. The introduction of the Growth Theorem in the 1990's would give more clarity to proofs of the already known results, and make new results easier to discover. The honest degrees use the elementary functions, the same as the third Grzegorczyk class, as basis. In this thesis we investigate the lattice of E^2-honest degrees. This degree structure take the second Grzegorczyk class as basis. We show that the Growth Theorem holds here, as well as how many properties are shared by the two lattices. We show that the honest degrees is embedded in the E^2-honest degrees. It is conjectured that they are in fact isomorphic. In addition to this we prove a result regarding predicates reducible to E^2-honest functions and for this we need a Normal Form Theorem, which we also prove in detail. Finally we investigate properties of anti-chains in thelattice of E^2-honest degrees.

The structure of University education has been modified to serve wider social and educational goals, so that, following the implementation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has increased University offering Undergraduate and graduate Double Degrees. In this new educational sphere, an international qualifications framework character is created to facilitate the transfer and recognition of the studies undertaken in other countries. Mutual trust between institutions of Higher Education and recognition of qualifications they issue are as basic support a common, proven, evaluation and quality accreditation methodology. The objectives of this research are to analyze and compare both academic offerings as Engineering Degree, Degrees and the others Degrees previous of Bologna Plan; as well as to discern the identity of the Public Universities of Madrid. It is performed a contrastive study of undergraduate Degrees, Double Degree, bilingual, online and pre-Bologna areas of knowledge; the students enrolled Degree in teaching; and the number of teachers. The Results indicate a heterogeneous academic offerings; prevalence of bilingual and online Degrees at the Universities Carlos III and Rey Juan Carlos, respectively; the increased presence of students in the area of Social Sciences and Law at the Universities Complutense and Rey Juan Carlos; and the adequacy of academic offerings to professional trends, which places the students of Madrid at the vanguard of knowledge in the Information Society. We study two extremal problems about subgraphs excluding a family F of graphs: (i) Among all graphs with m edges, what is the smallest size f(m,Ƒ) of a largest Ƒ-free subgraph? (ii) Among all graphs with minimum degree δ and maximum degree Δ, what is the smallest minimum degree h(δ,Δ, Ƒ) of a spanning Ƒ-free subgraph with largest minimum degree? These questions are easy to answer for families not containing any bipartite graph. We study the case where Ƒ is composed of all even cycles of length at most 2r, r ≥ 2. In this case, we give bounds on f(m, Ƒ) and h(δ,Δ, Ƒ) that are essentially asymptotically tight up to a logarithmic factor. In particular for every graph G, we show the existence of subgraphs with arbitrarily high girth and with either many edges or large minimum degree. These subgraphs are created using probabilistic embeddings of a graph into extremal graphs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this note we consider a discrete symmetric function f( x, y) where associated with the degrees of adjacent vertices in a tree. The extremal trees with respect to the corresponding graph invariant, defined as are characterized by the 'greedy tree' and 'alternating greedy tree'. This is achieved through simple generalizations of previously used ideas on similar questions. As special cases, the already known extremal structures of the Randic index follow as corollaries. The extremal structures for the relatively new sum-connectivity index and harmonic index also follow immediately, some of these extremal structures have not been identified in previous studies. Agricultural Informatics or Agricultural Information Science is the combination of two major and important subject’s viz. ‘Agricultural Science’ and ‘Informatics/Information Science’. This is an interdisciplinary subject and importantly the two major branches from which this is evolved is also bearing interdisciplinary nature. The uses of IT, Computing, or general scientific Documentation is common in almost all the areas and subjects; and as far as agriculture is concerned the documentation and general information management principles were common initially. Gradually like other subjects, Agricultural Informatics also become developed as a field of practice to cater to the need of Agricultural sectors by providing information, IT and technological support. There are various reasons for the introduction of Agricultural Informatics. Initially, it was responsible for information management activities related to the Agriculture and allied areas. Gradually this is become more applied and with diverse in nature. In pre-production activities to postproduction, Agricultural Informatics today become an important practicing field and as well as a field study in major international universities. Even in many developing countries like in India also Agricultural Informatics become a field of study. The field is available with this nomenclature and in other allied nomenclatures. In some context it is noted that the field is available only in some of the streams viz. science or technology, and in some context as a specialization. However, there is a potentiality in offering the field Agricultural Informatics as a branch in other areas, both Indian and International context. This paper is conceptual in nature and deals with such potentialities with a brief overview on Agricultural Informatics including evolution, features and role, and importance.

Degrees in Rural Education were thought and built with the aim of meeting a demand from rural workers about training specifically aimed to educators in that context. In view of this perspective, the present work focused on analyzing the understandings about the teachers’ formation of Natural Sciences field in degrees in Rural Education, based on the productions socialized by the Brazilian scientific community in the last ten years (2009-2019). The qualitative research, called the state of knowledge, was submitted to Discursive Textual Analysis, from which two final categories emerged: Challenges for the strengthening of teacher education in Rural Education in Natural Sciences and the Formation of teacher identity in degrees in Field Education in Natural Sciences. Among the results, it is highlighted that, for the consolidation of this teacher formation, the curricular organization must start from a dialogical relationship between the popular knowledge coming from the subjects of the field and the scientific knowledge, through the interrelation between university time and community time. With regard to the formation of the teaching identity, the importance of investigative processes that enable social and political discussions has emerged.

- Abstract
The author of this paper describes the whole process of the establishment of an approved official degree throughout Spain for the dietitian nutritionist profession – a process which she personally experienced and in which she actively participated with other professionals of this sector. This process started in the early 1970s, when people in Spain had to go abroad to obtain training in this field. This situation came to an end when laws were passed in Spain that allowed consensual proposals to be made, reflecting those of other countries, going from a “special degree” to an “official diploma” and, finally, within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), to a four-year study programme, the Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree, in 2009. The paper also deals with the importance of association for a profession such as this and the need to establish a code of ethics setting out the rules of ethical conduct and good professional practices.KEYWORDS: nutrition, dietetics, degrees, dietitian nutritionist, association, code of ethics.

In this paper we show that the degrees of interpretability of finitely axiomatized extensions-in-the-same-language of a finitely axiomatized sequential theory-like Elementary Arithmetic EA, IΣ, or the Gödel-Bernays theory of sets and classes GB-have suprema. This partially answers a question posed by Švejdar in his paper (Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae 19:789-813, ). The partial solution of Švejdar's problem follows from a stronger fact: the convexity of the degree structure of finitely axiomatized extensions-in-the-same-language of a finitely axiomatized sequential theory in the degree structure of the degrees of all finitely axiomatized sequential theories. In the paper we also study a related question: the comparison of structures for interpretability and derivability. In how far can derivability mimic interpretability? We provide two positive results and one negative result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Let G be a strongly connected, weighted directed graph. We define a product distance η(i, j) for pairs i, j of vertices and form the corresponding product distance matrix. We obtain a formula for the determinant and the inverse of the product distance matrix. The edge orientation matrix of a directed tree is defined and a formula for its determinant and its inverse, when it exists, is obtained. A formula for the determinant of the (entry-wise) squared distance matrix of a tree is proved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data from the National Survey of College Graduates are used to examine race/ethnic and gender variation in achievement of STEM degrees and occupations with a special focus on Latinos. Findings show that odds of Latino male college graduates achieving degrees or occupations in STEM are equal or higher than odds for other males. Latino female graduates are more likely than African American females to achieve a STEM degree and as likely as white females. Results reveal greater gender variation in the Latino sub-sample (relative to the African American or white sub-samples). Findings provide insight into a portion of the science pipeline involving college graduates that is not often examined for Latinos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This text is designed to introduce the reader to the historical and contemporary contexts of the debate which leads to academic degrees and titles. After a short introduction, which shows the process of the creation of titles over the centuries, I present the Polish scholars' promotion system. I present two main ideological positions resulting from the problem of sharing the scholars' environment between liberal and conservative camps, which I find interesting. I supplement the theme with the Bologna Declaration, whose aim was to reform higher education in Europe, including the governance of the academics. Based on articles on the Internet, I also bring the reasonongs of both sides which were clarified in the course of observation and participation in the problem under consideration. I then briefly present my position, which doesen't take an arbitrary valuation but is just one of the voices in the discussion. The purpose of this article is to encourage people to think about their future in the world of science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, technology has been incorporated into higher education, leading to the appearance of new educational scenarios. At the same time, this fact has set up several processes aimed at quality improvement. In this paper, we look at the teaching coordination experience carried out in the Faculty of Business Sciences and Tourism in Ourense. This experience consisted in the ellaboration of an activity schedule that shows the main activities for subject assessment during a semester. This experience had two main objectives: first, to facilitate the students'planning of their tasks in continuous assessment; second, to detect possible overlaps and work overloads. The Google Calendar was used to achieve these objectives, and the results obtained can be regarded as satisfactory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGHER education ,EDUCATIONAL cooperation - Abstract
Purpose – Since the 1980s, and especially after China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1991, international educational collaborations have developed in China. Spurred by economic, cultural and educational factors, joint programs have become an essential supplement to Chinese education. Despite the obvious and diverse benefits brought about by joint programs, various challenges arise. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the benefits and challenges generally and then in a more targeted way through the lens of one Sino-Australian partnership.Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses a case study of one joint Australia-China program to explore the development, benefits and challenges of joint programs in China and suggest how to improve the overall quality of the joint programs which will further international collaboration of educational institutions in China.Findings – Joint programs are a strategic component of the expansion and globalization objectives of the Chinese government. They offer more opportunities for Chinese students to receive an overseas education, enhance the research profile of Chinese universities and promote new ways of teaching and learning. For the Australian government, transnational education and the model of joint programs are helping to build Australia's research reputation, develop alternative teaching and learning ideas and promote global citizenship. Challenges include linguistic issues, financial problems, inefficient management, program assessment, qualifications, skills of teaching staff and different ways of thinking.Practical implications – Enhancing pedagogical quality within a business paradigm is a unifying imperative.Originality/value – The paper presents a new case study analysis for joint program educators and decision makers. The main goal of this paper is to present and compare two approaches to formalizing cross-world comparisons like 'John might have been taller than he is' in quantified modal logics. One is the standard method employing degrees and graded positives, according to which the example just given is to be paraphrased as something like 'The height that John has is such that he might have had a height greater than it,' which is amenable to familiar formalization strategies with respect to quantified modal logic. The other approach, based on subjunctive modal logic, mimics the mixed indicative-subjunctive patterns typical of cross-world comparisons in many natural languages by means of explicit mood markers. This latter approach is new and should, for various reasons, appeal to linguists and philosophers. Along the way, I argue that attempts to capture cross-world comparison by means of sentential operators are either inadequate or subject to substantive logical and philosophical objections.
