Robusta was obtained a century ago and has played an outstanding part in the history of poplar growing in France. This clone was considered by scientists as being of moderate quality but became very popular among nursery men and foresters. Its success was due to its shape and resistance to bacterial canker but also because it was seen as a safe bet after the disappointment caused by the Marssonina brunnea attacks on 'I-214'. The long term predominance of this clone on poplar cultivation in France has not led to any major pathological disasters. However, it is worth keeping in mind the risks involved in poplar cultivation based on a single clone.
