Background: In Egypt, the area of Berseem was decreased and wheat area increased which lead to high price of rabbit rations. Using non-traditional feed led to decrease the cost of feeding. The main objective of this study is to replace 50% of Berseem hay (BH) of rabbit rations by agriculture by-products such as Mung bean husks (MBH), soybean vein hay (SBVH), or peanut vein hay (PVH). Method: Twenty-four New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits aged 5–6 weeks (584 ± 25 g) were randomly divided into four equal experimental groups. Feeding trial lasted 70 days. Results: Except for organic matter (OM) digestibility, treatments had no effect on all other nutrient digestibilites that includes dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), and nitrogen free extract (NFE) and nutritive values {total digestible nutrient (TDN) and digestible crude protein (DCP)}. Instead, 50% of BH by the other alternative source of agriculture by-products had no effect on all carcass parameters measured. However, dressing percentages was improved. Treatments had no effect on albumin, total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), creatinine, and alkaline phosphatase. Conclusion: It can be instead 50% of hay used in rabbit rations with alternative sources of roughage, such as Mung bean husks, soybean vein hay, or peanut vein hay, without any adverse effect on their performance, digestion, carcass characteristics, and blood constituents. The objective of the current study was to assess the effects of pre-slaughter operations in llamas on physiological (concentrations of some blood constituents) and carcass quality (pH and bruises) indicators under commercial conditions. Thirty llamas raised on pasture, 18-24 months old and average live weight of 54.2±6.4 kg were transported on a single 3 h journey in one batch to the slaughterhouse. Blood samples were taken on farm one hour before loading, after unloading, after lairage (18 h) and during exsanguination to measure the concentrations of various stress-related variables. Mean values for the blood variables showed a significant rise (P < 0.05) in the concentration of cortisol immediately after transport (16.9 ng/mL), as well as CK activity after lairage (528.4 UI/L); β-hydroxybutyrate concentration showed similar mean values for the different sampling times. A total of 19 bruises were found on 9 of the carcasses. The backs (loin) of carcasses had more bruises (57.89%), followed by thorax (21.05%). Irregularly shaped bruises were the most frequent (81.25%), followed by circular bruises (18.75%). It was concluded that pre-slaughter handling of llamas under these commercial conditions produced physiological changes similar to those in other species, which fall within acceptable limits for their welfare; however stress could be reduced and adverse effects like bruises could be minimized by designing proper facilities, by following OIE recommendations on the welfare of animals during stunning and by training of personnel handling llamas all along the Bolivian meat chain.

- Abstract
[EN] To alleviate the deleterious effect of heat stress during summer conditions on male rabbits’ reproduction, 40 V Line adult rabbit bucks (on av. 8 mo old) were divided into 4 experimental groups and exposed to temperatures ranging from 23 to 36°C. Bucks in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th group were supplemented with 0, 50, 100 or 150 mg of Chinese royal jelly (RJ)/kg twice per week, respectively, over a 20-wk period. Semen quality and blood biochemical constituents were evaluated. RJ at any dose exhibited a significant increase (P<0.05) in rabbits’ sperm concentration, total sperm output, sperm motility, live sperm and normal sperm compared to the untreated controls. Plasma total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose and high density lipids (HDL) concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) boosted in the RJ groups compared to the controls. In contrast, RJ treatment resulted in a significant (P<0.05) reduction in plasma total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol and low density lipids (LDL) concentrations. Treatment with RJ significantly boosted (P<0.05) testosterone concentration in the RJ groups to reach 110, 120 and 128%, respectively, of the control group. Improved kidney and liver functions were observed in the RJ bucks groups where plasma creatinine, urea concentrations, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase enzyme activities were significantly (P<0.05) decreased by RJ treatments. Treating bucks subjected to heat stress by different RJ doses increased (P<0.05) total antioxidant capacity to 106, 111 and 115% of basal, but significantly reduced (P<0.05) malondialdehyde and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances compared to the untreated. It was concluded that Chinese royal jelly supplementation for heat-stressed male rabbits can counteract summer infertility and improve their physiological status.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Derivatives of propionic acid NSAIDs are irreversible inhibitors of cyclooxygenase enzyme widely used. The aim of this study was to evaluate, through different experimental models, biological effects of derivatives of propionic acid (fenoprofen, naproxen, ibuprofen and ketoprofen) in cellular and molecular level. The labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m (99mTc) and morphological analysis of erythrocytes of blood of rats, as well as growth, survival of cultures of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and the assessment of bacterial plasmid electrophoretic profiles were models used for experimental evaluation of possible biological effects of antiinflammatory drugs. The results show that, in general, anti-inflammatory drugs evaluated were not able to alter the labeling of blood constituents with 99mTc, the morphology of red blood cells from blood of rats, as well as the growth of cultures of E. coli and the electrophoretic profile of plasmid DNA. However, naproxen appears to cytotoxic effect on bacterial cultures, plasmids and genotoxic effects in reducing the action of stannous chloride in cultures of E. coli. The use of experimental fast performance and low cost was important for assessment of biological effects, contributing to a better understanding of the properties of propionic acid derivatives studied. anti-inflammatory, blood constituents, technetium-99m, stannous chloride, Escherichia coli; DNA Os derivados do acido propiônico são antiinflamatórios não esteroidais inibidores irreversíveis da enzima cicloxigenase amplamente utilizados. The present study was constituted by 3 experiments: Experiment 1: Were analysed the blood constituents of Holstein bovine females monthly during the whole gestation and the peripartum. The females were sorted in five groups: pregnancy heifers (G1), second pregnancy cows (G2) repeat-breeders second pregnancy cows (G3), third pregnancy cows (G4) and repeat-breeders third pregnancy cows. The seric activity of AST and ALP enzymes was higher in G1. Only the cholesterol level. The diference was significative between repeat-breeders and non repeat-breeders cows only in the cholesterol seric concentration in the early gestation. In the second month of pregnancy the seric concentration of total calcium and ionized calcium was significant modified compared with the first month of gestation in all groups. In the late gestation, at the partum and in post-partum period the seric concentration of calcium, phosphorus, iron, chlorides, creatinine, direct and total bilirrubins, cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, albumin, and imunoglobulins, number of eritrocytes and leukocytes, plasmatic concentration of glucose and hemoglobin and AST activity in all of the animal groups. The sodium, potassium and urea concentrations were not significantly modified during the experiment. Experiment 2: The blood constituents of the cows of experiment 1 (G1) was compared with cows that aborted between 25 and 45 days post-breed. Possibly this abortion has metabolic/nutricional cause, because was not found alterations in the acute-phase protein concentrations neither in the leukogram. Experiment 3: The passive immunity transfer to the heifers which were daughters of the females from the experiment 1 was evaluated by measuring seric GGT , total protein and IGg . The heifers got colostrum from their own mothers and there was no significant difference between the groups. The TIP found in all the groups was considered good.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of in vivo treatment with an aqueous cinnamon extract on the labeling of blood constituents with 99mTc and on the morphology of red blood cells from Wistar rats. Animals were treated with cinnamon extract at different doses and for different periods of time. As controls, animals treated with 0.9% NaCl. Labeling of blood constituents with 99mTc was performed. Plasma, blood cells and insoluble fractions were isolated. Radioactivity in each fraction was counted and the percentage of radioactivity (%ATI) was calculated. Also, blood smears were prepared to morphological analysis of red blood cells from. Data showed that in vivo cinnamon extract did not significantly (p>0.05) modify the %ATI of blood constituents and morphology of red blood cells. The results suggest that in vivo aqueous cinnamon could not affect the membrane structures involved in transport of ions or the oxidation state of stannous and pertechnetate ions.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar efeitos do tratamento in vivo com um extrato aquoso de canela na marcação de constituintes sangüíneos com 99mTc e na morfologia de hemácias de ratos Wistar. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is the second most produced and consumed vegetable in the world. It has been indicated in the prevention and treatment of cancer, asthma and atherosclerosis. Blood constituents labeled with radionuclides have been used in procedures in nuclear medicine. Data have shown that food and drugs can alter the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m (99mTc). This study evaluated the influence of a tomato extract on this radiolabeling procedure. Heparinized blood (Wistar rats) was incubated in vitro with different concentrations of a tomato extract and 99mTc-labeling was performed. Plasma (P) and blood cells (BC) were separated following soluble (SF-P/SF-BC) and insoluble (IF-P/IF-BC) fractions isolation by precipitation and centrifugation. The radioactivities on blood constituents (P, BC, IF-P, SF-P, IF-BC and SF-BC) were determined and the percentage of radioactivity (%ATI) was calculated. The tomato extract used at the highest concentrations (2.00 and 4.00g/mL), reduced significantly (p < 0.05) the %ATI in IF-P, although this extract did not modify the radiolabeling on BC, neither the radioactivity fixation on IF-BC. In conclusion, our data suggest that the chemical compounds present in the aqueous tomato extract could have some properties capable of change the fixation of 99mTc on plasma proteins. A study was carried out to determine the effect of dietary probiotic Lactina on production performance, some blood parameters and caecal microflora of male mule ducklings raised in 93 days under field conditions. The probiotic preparation Lactina consisted of freeze-dried pure cultures of Streptococcus thermophilus, Enterococcus faecium and 4 strains of Lactobacillus. Each gram of Lactina contained 0.1x109 CFU. Day-old birds were randomly allocated to -L (n = 2240) and +L (n = 2330) groups. The difference between treatments on these birds was the supplementation of the probiotic in the feeds (300 g/t) of +L group. Lactina significantly improved body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and liver weight of mules. The probiotic supplementation did not affect the intestine length, the weight of gizzard, heart, and blood constituents comprising, haemoglobin, total protein and cholesterol concentrations. Lactina fed ducklings had reduced total counts of bacteria, E. coli and Salmonella and elevated number of Lactobacilli in the caecal digesta. In addition, lower cost of body weight yield and lower mortality rate was found for the same treatment.

Seventy-five Angus x MARC II crossbred heifers were used to assess the effects of age at weaning on calf performance and blood constituents. Calves were weaned at 150, 210, or 270 days of age with comparisons made to their non-weaned counterparts. Changes in blood chemistry and hematology (cortisol, glucose, T3, total proteins, packed cell volume and the differential white blood cell count) were recorded on the day of weaning (day-0), and at 2, 7, 14, and 28 days post-weaning. Calves weaned at 210 days of age presented the highest plasma cortisol, glucose, and total protein concentrations during their early post-weaning period. Calves weaned at 150 days of age had significantly lower plasma T3 values. Packed cell volume and differential white blood cell counts showed no relationship to age at weaning. Calves weaned at 210 days of age presented the most rapid post-weaning growth performance, relative to the 150 or 270 days of age weaned calves.

The impact of stress was studied in semidomesticated reindeer subjected to various herding and handling methods. In herded and handled animals, stress lesions were found, such as abomasal haemorrhage, muscular and myocardial degeneration and marked changes in blood constituents. The degree of change was dependent of the magnitude of stress the animal had been exposed to. Manual handling and restraint was found to be one of the major stress factors. There were evident indications of a cumulative effect of repeated stress events. The use of motor vehicles (helicopter and snow-scooter), for herding and transporting the animals, was found to be an important stress factor. It is concluded that various herding and handling methods studied in the present investigation led to varying degrees of deleterious effects on the health of the animals and a poorer meatquality from slaughtered animals. Hence herding should be undertaken as carefully as possible, the time taken for manual handling should be minimized, and the corrals be so constructed as to cause a minimum of disturbance, capture and restraint. Transportation should be undertaken very cautiously with as little manual handling as possible during loading and unloading. To obtain a good meat quality, animals to be slaughtered should be subjected to a minimum of handling, i.e. slaughter should take place as quickly as possible. Transportation of live animals to slaughterhouses and the keeping of animals in corrals, pens or crates whilst awaiting slaughter will result in a lowered meat quality and should therefore be avoided. Abstract in Swedish / Sammanfatning: Betydelsen av stress hos ren studerades i hjordar i vilka olika typer av samlings- och hanteringsmetoder anvandes. Objective: This study aims to learn about the current situation of surgical massive blood transfusion of different surgical departments in China's Tertiary hospitals, which could provide the basis for the formulation of guidelines on massive blood transfusion., Method: A multicenter retrospective research on the application status of blood constituents during massive blood transfusion was conducted and a comparative analyses of survival and length of hospitalization in patients from different departments (trauma, cardiac surgery, obstetric conditions, or other common surgeries), were performed., Result: In China, during massive blood transfusion the ratio of the dosage of fresh frozen plasma to the dosage of red blood cell suspension reached 1:1-2, while the dosage of platelet and cryoprecipitate appeared to be very small. The risk of in-hospital death were associated with the primary disease in patients receiving massive blood transfusion (Log-Rank P = 0.000), cardiac surgery and trauma patients who received massive blood transfusion have a higher risk of death rate., Conclusions: Patients undergoing massive blood transfusion among different surgical departments have a certain difference in use of blood transfusion, mortality rate and the time of death. Our findings suggested that we should set up an independent transfusion program in cardiac surgery and trauma patients of massive blood transfusion.

- Abstract
To evaluate the effect of intravenous infusion of a soybean based lipid emulsion (Lipovenoes 10%) on some blood constituents in sheep, a replicated 2 × 2 Latin square design experiment was conducted in four clinically healthy ewes. Lipid emulsion (LE group) or normal saline (NS group) was infused intravenously at a rate of 0.025 mL kg(-1) per min for 6 hr and the concentrations of blood triglyceride, glucose, insulin, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and potassium were measured before (baseline) and then at timepoints 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 hr after infusion. Compared to the baseline values and/or NS infusion, LE infusion resulted in a significant increase in the concentrations of triglyceride (p < 0.001), glucose (p < 0.01), calcium (p < 0.05), phosphorous (p < 0.01) and a significant decrease in insulin (p < 0.001) and magnesium (p < 0.05) concentrations. Compared to the baseline value, the homeostasis model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index increased (p < 0.001) at timepoints 2 and 4 hr and abruptly decreased at timepoint six hr (p < 0.01) following LE infusion. In LE group, HOMA-IR values were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than those for NS group at timepoints 2 and 4 hr after infusion. Neither treatment nor time influenced serum sodium and potassium concentrations (p > 0.05). In conclusion, intravenous infusion of Lipovenoes temporarily influenced some blood constituents. Increased triglyceride concentrations were associated with an increase in HOMA-IR values indicating a state of insulin resistance. No remarkable adverse effect was observed following LE infusion and lipid based emulsions can be safely used in ruminants not suffering from extensive lipid mobilization.

- Abstract
The Japanese quail is a very valuable animal model for research in a variety of biological disciplines. The purpose of this study was to characterize and interrelate age-dependent testicular parameters with various blood constituents: blood glucose, plasma proteins and packed cell volume that are developing concurrently in the growing bird. Another objective of the study was to identify selective physioanatomical markers for predicting the testicular growth and the onset of sexual maturity. Male Japanese quail hatchlings were raised in temperature controlled brooders for up to 3 weeks of age under a constant light and then shifted to hanging cages in an air conditioned room set at ~73° F under a 14L: 10D lighting system and ad libitum access to feed and water. Starting d8, a group of 8-10 birds of uniform size and weight were selected randomly at 4-day intervals up to d52 of age for the project. The birds were weighed and blood sampled using the brachial vein and Blood Glucose (BGL), Total Plasma Proteins (PP) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) levels were measured prior to euthanization. The testes were removed and measured for weight, length, width and Volume (VOL). All the testicular measurements were then correlated with age and body weight. The left testes were larger than the right testes and their differences were evident at d36 of age. Testicular measurements also reflected two distinct growth surges at d28, d32 and d36 of age. Combined Testes Weight (CTW) and Combined Testes Volume (CTV) revealed a strong positive correlation with PCV and PP and a negative correlation with Blood Glucose Level (BGL). Accordingly, these measurements could serve as reliable markers of growth rate and sexual maturation in male Japanese quail.
