In this paper, the BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India, and China) countries, which play an increasingly significant role in combating climate change, are selected as the research objects. First, we investigate the driving factors of the evolution of carbon emissions in the BASIC group from 2000 to 2016. Second, we use the Monte Carlo simulation to analyze the potential evolution trend of carbon emissions in the benchmark scenario, optimization scenario, and enhanced scenario in the BASIC group from 2017 to 2030 to judge whether the countries can achieve their own autonomous contribution goals. Third, we evaluate whether the BASIC INDC can provide practical support for making the global temperature control goals described in the Paris Agreement. The results show that first, the contribution rate of the energy consumption structure and population size to the carbon emissions of the BASIC are low, and the contributions of R&D efficiency, R&D intensity, and investment intensity to the carbon emission change in the BASIC group are more prominent. Second, under the benchmark scenario, Brazil, South Africa, India, and China from the difference between the complete INDC targets respectively is 265.50 Mt, 207.86 Mt, 1034.70 Mt, and 4660.82 Mt. Under the optimization scenario, China could meet the INDC goals. The gap between Brazil, South Africa, and India is 60.06 Mt, 9.50 Mt, and 413.74 Mt, respectively. Under the enhanced scenario, China and South Africa could meet the INDC target, while Brazil and India are 15.69 Mt and 228.28 Mt away from the INDC target, respectively. Third, although the INDC goals of Brazil and India can achieve the carbon reduction allocated under the 2 °C targets, the INDC targets submitted by the BASIC are not enough to reach the carbon reduction allocated under the global 1.5 °C destination; Brazil, South Africa, India, and China's gap is 64.14 Mt, 246.15 Mt, 236.84 Mt, 3399.64 Mt, respectively. Fourth, Brazil, South Africa, and China should increase its R&D on energy-saving and emission reduction technologies, and India should develop reasonable population policies and green economic development policies. The basic sentence is a term that I extracted from the extrapolation of the types of sentences mentioned by the grammarians, and I defined it as follows: the useful sentence is a sentence that could not add to it, does not accept the deficiency, and omission could be included within. Importance of research: The basic sentence is the root of all sentences in which we understand the deconstruction of sentences and their parsing. The research problem: There is a clear weakness in the parsing of the sentence, and weakness in the knowledge of the root on which the parsing is based, which is the basic sentence. Introduction Intermittent exotropia 'X(T)' is a disorder of binocular eye movement control, in which one eye intermittently moves outward. It is the commonest type of exodeviation and is usually detected by the parents in early childhood. Patients with X(T) tend to manifest their deviation when they are tired, stressed, or have cold. Purpose To manifest the prevalence of different types of X(T) in exotropic children aged 6–12 years attending Ain Shams University ophthalmology outpatient clinic. Patients and methods This is a cross-sectional study including 139 exotropic children aged 6–12 years attending Ain Shams University ophthalmology outpatient clinic. All patients underwent full medical and ophthalmic history. The ophthalmic examinations included visual acuity, ocular movements, and the angles of deviation. Further ocular examinations included slit-lamp examination for anterior segment, fundus examination, and Worth 4-dot test. Results A total of 139 exotropic children (6–12 years old) attending the ophthalmology outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University were included. We found that X(T) is the commonest type of exodeviation, in 86.3%. The 'basic type' was the commonest subtype of X(T), in 84.2%. The true divergence excess was the second most common type, in 7.5%, pseudodivergence was seen in 5.8%, and the convergence insufficiency was the least common type seen in 2.5%. Conclusions Intermittent exotropia was the commonest type of exodeviation among children aged 6–12 years. The basic type was the commonest subtype of X(T). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an algorithm that calculates the nominal torque for friction grip joints, followed by its implementation in a Microsoft Excel worksheet that is automated by a macro written in Visual Basic. The algorithm outputs not only the optimum nominal torque (the value for which the margin of safety is maximum) but also the interval of acceptable values so that the user can easily choose the torque according to his preferences.

Abstract Objectives This study aims to determine if there is sex bias in basic and preclinical research on age-related hearing loss for the 10-year period of 2006–2015, prior to the NIH mandate of including sex as a biological variable in 2016. Design Manuscripts were identified in PubMed for the query “age-related hearing loss” for the 10-year period of 2006 to 2015. Manuscripts were included if they were original research (not reviews or meta-analyses), written in English, contained an abstract, used animals, and were primarily on age-related hearing loss. These criteria yielded 231 unique manuscripts for inclusion in the study analysis. The text of each manuscript was screened for the sex of the animals, the number of male and female animals, the discussion of sex-based results, the study site (US or international), and the year of publication. Results Only two thirds of manuscripts reported the sex of animals used in the experiments, and of these, 54% used both sexes, 34% used males only, and 13% used females only. In papers reporting sex and number of animals used, 67% were males and 33% were females. Over twice as many internationally based studies used males only compared to US-based studies. Only 15% of all manuscripts discussed sex-based results. Conclusions Sex bias is present in basic and preclinical age-related hearing loss research for the manuscripts screened in the 10-year period. Equal inclusion of both males and females in basic and preclinical age-related hearing loss research is critical for understanding sex-based differences in mechanisms and for effective treatment options.

The authors put emphasis on three types of methodological research: - research of a particular method or a technique as the subject of research, - research of a subject i.e. a segment of a certain science that simultaneously uses several research methods, with subsequent intercomparison of the success of these methods, and - Research that applies to one method, is leading not only to knowledge about the subject of research, but also to knowledge about the success of this method. It is important to state the following facts: - methodological research can be classified into theoretical and empirical one, - it is not completely clear which criteria the above classification is based on, and - purely theoretical or purely empirical research does not exist because theory and empiria are inseparable, and one is essential for the survival, development, and advancement of the other. In addition, all methodological research in political science has, directly or indirectly, elements of action research. Therefore, methodological scientific research can have at least one of the following objectives: Firstly, to advance and develop methodological scientific knowledge, secondly, to verify the applicability and functionality of an already existing one. Depending on its objective, methodological research can be classified into basic and corrective research, that is diagnostic and prognostic research, but we would also like to draw attention to instrumental, and manipulative research as well.

Summary: Climate‐driven phenological change across local spatial gradients leads to leaf shape variation. At higher elevations, leaves of broadleaf species tend to become narrower, but the underlying molecular mechanism is largely unknown.In this study, a series of morphometric analyses and biochemical assays, combined with functional identification in apple, were performed.We show that the decrease in apple leaf width with increasing altitude is controlled by a basic/helix–loop–helix transcription factor (bHLH TF), MdbHLH3. The MdbHLH3‐overexpressing lines have a lower transcript abundance of MdPIN1 encoding an auxin efflux carrier but a higher transcript abundance of MdGH3‐2 encoding a putative auxin amido conjugate synthase, resulting in a lower free auxin concentration; feeding the transgenic leaves with exogenous auxin partially restores leaf width. MdbHLH3 transcriptionally suppresses and activates MdPIN1 and MdGH3‐2, respectively, by specifically binding to their promoters. This alters auxin homeostasis and transport, consequently leading to changes in leaf shape.These findings suggest that the bHLH TF MdbHLH3 directly modulates auxin signaling in controlling leaf shape in response to local spatial gradients in apple. Aims: Critically appraise the organization (teachers, resources, pedagogy) of simulation-based learning of invasive procedures skills (venipuncture, establishing peripheral intravenous access, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, male and female urinary catheterization) according to the literature and create a theoretical framework for different contexts of undergraduate medical education. Background: In different countries, requirements for graduates of medical schools include performance of invasive procedures skills. Teaching approaches to training students in simulation settings are considered in the literature. However, there is no information about the organization of such training. Main results: A unified methodology of skills performance teaching/assessment at least at national level is not fixed; there is a tendency of 'task shifting' the training from teachers to student peers, who can play the role of simulated patients; video recording is a helpful option for educational processes; students' opinions are important for evaluating the organization of simulation-based training. A theoretical framework was developed. Conclusion: The framework offers a generic template to complete and improve simulation-based learning in a specific context. Organizational aspects should be considered in any research on simulation-based education to better understand context and adapt delivery in other educational establishments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A range of explanations have been advanced for the systems of colour names found in different languages. Some explanations give special, fundamental status to a subset of colour categories. We argue that a subset of colour categories, if fundamental, will be coherent - meaning that a non-trivial criterion distinguishes them from the other colour categories. We test the coherence of subsets of achromatic (white, black and grey), primary (white, black, red, green, yellow, blue) and basic (primaries plus brown, orange, purple, pink and grey) colour categories in English. Criteria for defining colour categories were expressed in terms of behavioural, linguistic and geometric features derived from colour naming and linguistic usage data; and were discovered using machine learning methods. We find that achromatic and basic colour categories are coherent subsets but not primaries. These results support claims that the basic colour categories have special status, and undermine claims about the fundamental role of primaries in colour naming systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is suggested that the knowledge organization (KO) field places greater emphasis on basic research that examines the sociology of KO systems (KOS) and the broader, environmental reasons for the development of both formal and informal KOS. This approach is contrasted with applied KO, which focuses on the practical construction or improvement of specific KOS. The preponderance of applied research in the field of KO is confirmed, at least within the document-centric strand more closely aligned with library and information science, through a survey of articles in the Knowledge Organization journal published between 2009 and 2018. The survey utilized the Frascati Manual definitions for basic and applied research, and referenced Tennis's classification of KO research (2008). There is considerable potential for building on the critical tradition of KO, with various areas ripe for further sociological investigation. Objectives: The aim of this study was to validate the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition (BASIC) and the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition Questionnaire (BASIC-Q) for identification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in a memory clinic setting.Methods: A total of 163 sociodemographically matched patients (MCI, n = 42, and dementia, n = 121) and 83 control participants were included in the study. Two instruments were validated: (a) BASIC, including the components self-report, informant report, and two brief cognitive tests, and (b) BASIC-Q, including the components self-report, informant report, and orientation. BASIC can be administered in 5 minutes and BASIC-Q in less than 5 minutes.Results: A high discriminative validity for MCI vs control participants was found for both BASIC (sensitivity 0.86, specificity 0.89) and BASIC-Q (sensitivity 0.88, specificity 0.88). In comparison, the MMSE had low sensitivity (0.61) and moderate specificity (0.72). All components of BASIC and BASIC-Q contributed significantly to differentiate MCI from control participants. The components of BASIC and BASIC-Q also contributed significantly to differentiate MCI from dementia, except for self-report, which was identical in the two groups.Conclusions: Both BASIC and BASIC-Q are brief, valid, and effective instruments for identification of patients with possible MCI in a memory clinic setting. The Strategy for the management and utilization of mineral resources of the Republic Srpska includes inevitably the mineral resource base as an essential element of material and social development, and it is one of the significant reliance forms on its own suorces in achieving economic development. In this sense, geological exploration, like an important activity in providing mineral resources for the development of the economy of the Republic Srpska, has not been given adequate attention since the 1990 and has not been systematically conducted at all. The practice of the surrounding countries, and also in the earlier period, in these regions was such that geological exploration were treated adequately with the importance of mineral resources and, accordingly, funds were provided for their financing by the state and also by users of mineral resources. Today, there are no systematic geological surveys in the Republic Srpska and no systematic sources for their financing. The geological research activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the former Yugoslavia, throughout the earlier period, was characterized by relatively good organization and coherence of the research program. Due to this, many remarkable results have been achieved, which justify the realized investments in many ways. The paper presents the basic characteristics of the mineral raw material base of the Republic Srpska, as then an analysis of inefficiency and stagnation in the research was done, and finally suggestions are given the necessary activities to improve the present situation. Objectives: Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition (BASIC), which combines self- and informant report with cognitive testing, was previously found to be highly accurate in identification of dementia and cognitive impairment. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a questionnaire version of BASIC, the BASIC-Q, for use in community settings.Methods: In order to construct a questionnaire version of BASIC, we substituted cognitive testing with questions regarding orientation. BASIC-Q was validated based on further analysis of data from the primary BASIC validation study, where patients consecutively referred from general practice were tested at their first memory clinic admission prior to diagnosis. Control participants were primarily recruited among participating patients' relatives. Expert clinical diagnosis was subsequently used as reference standard for estimation of classification accuracy.Results: A high discriminative validity (sensitivity 0.92, specificity 0.97) for cognitive impairment (n = 159) vs socio-demographically matched control participants (n = 109) was found. In comparison, the MMSE had 0.76 sensitivity and 0.81 specificity. Administration time for BASIC-Q was less than 5 minutes compared to approximately 10 minutes for the MMSE.Conclusions: BASIC-Q is a brief, efficient and valid tool for identification of cognitive impairment in a clinical setting. We present two symptomatic sisters who had a positive family history of sudden death. None of them had structural heart disease. In the 25-year-old proband, complex ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac conduction system disease, and skeletal muscle weakness were found. Genetic examination showed a pathogenic intronic variant in the desmin gene in the proband only. In the elder sister with palpitations, complex ventricular arrhythmia (>46 000 ectopic beats) was removed by radiofrequency ablation. This family case shows that complex ventricular arrhythmia may have different background within one family, genetic examinations should be performed in a person with broadest spectrum of symptoms. Background: Identification of coronary ischemia in patients presenting with chronic chest pain is difficult as resting ECG can be normal. Diagnosis of coronary ischemia requires evaluation during exercise or pharmacological stress. A noninvasive test to identify coronary ischemia at rest without the need for exercise is desirable. We studied the diagnostic accuracy of magnetocardiography (MCG) at rest to detect coronary ischemia in these patients.Methods: Patients with chronic chest pain and suspected coronary ischemia with a normal ECG were included. Patients underwent treadmill test (TMT) and were divided into TMT positive and TMT negative groups. MCG was recorded in a magnetically shielded room. Iso-field contour maps generated at the T-wave peak were compared between the groups. From the magnetic field map (MFM), the magnetic field angle at T-wave peak was calculated and was also compared across the two groups.Results: There were a total of 29 patients, 12 with positive TMT and 17 with negative TMT. An abnormal magnetic field angle was more common in the TMT positive group (72% vs. 6%). Abnormal contour maps in the form of nondipole patterns or abnormal orientation were seen in 81.8% (9/11) patients in TMT positive group and 6.8% (1/17) patients in the TMT negative group (p < .001).Conclusion: Abnormal magnetic field angle and abnormal magnetic field maps in MCG recorded at rest are able to identify the presence of coronary ischemia in patients with chronic chest pain and a normal resting ECG. The following chapter will discuss the relation between home computer history and computer programming – with a focus on game programming. The nurseries of the early 1980s are the origins of the later computer game industry and the private use of microcomputers becomes an essential part of the 'playful' exploration and emancipation of technology. This is why the contribution that home computing added to the history of digital economics, culture and even thought cannot be estimated high enough. After the definition of central terms and discussing the main problems of the historiography of technology and computing, the main topic separated in decades will be portrayed. The milestones of home computer technology will be linked to the scenes and (sub)cultures of their users. Some of these links will be highlighted.
