Abstract An estimated 52% of non-pregnant women of reproductive age in India are estimated to be affected by anaemia, which is categorised as a chronic condition. In 2019–2021, the National Family Health Survey–5 (NFHS–5) which was undertaken revealed the following statistics about the prevalence of anaemia in the state of Karnataka. To estimate haemoglobin levels using non-invasive portable device among nursing students. A cross sectional study was done among students of Nursing college in central Karnataka for a period of 3 months. Total of 140 students were included in the study. EzeCheck haemoglobin estimation was done twice and was recorded in the same Google form. The frequency and percentage of variation of results between Haematology Analyzer and EzeCheck devices was presented with a range of difference such as 0, less than 1, 1.0 to 1.9, 2.0 to 2.9, 3.0 to 3.9, and 4.0 and above. The total prevalence of anaemia among nursing students was 57.8% and most of the students had moderate degree of anaemia (28.6%). Two readings of haemoglobin were taken and difference of readings were calculated and majority of the students had difference of 2 gm/dl. The mean difference of haemoglobin of two readings was 0.5 ± 0.5 gm/dl. The technology employed in this study bridges the gap between patients and anaemia diagnosis by providing screening services. The device provides the diagnosis via a non-invasive, IoT-enabled service at a low cost.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization recommends universal iron supplementation for children aged 6–23 months in countries where anaemia is seen in over 40% of the population. Conventional ferrous salts have low efficacy due to low oral absorption in children with inflammation. Haem iron is more bioavailable, and its absorption may not be decreased by inflammation. This study aims to compare daily supplementation with haem iron versus ferrous sulphate on haemoglobin concentration and serum ferritin concentration after 12 weeks of supplementation. Methods This will be a two-arm, randomised controlled trial. Gambian children aged 6–12 months with anaemia will be recruited within a predefined geographical area and recruited by trained field workers. Eligible participants will be individually randomised using a 1:1 ratio within permuted blocks to daily supplementation for 12 weeks with either 10.0 mg of elemental iron as haem or ferrous sulphate. Safety outcomes such as diarrhoea and infection-related adverse events will be assessed daily by the clinical team (see Bah et al. Additional file 4_Adverse event eCRF). Linear regression will be used to analyse continuous outcomes, with log transformation to normalise residuals as needed. Binary outcomes will be analysed by binomial regression or logistic regression, Primary analysis will be by modified intention-to-treat (i.e., those randomised and who ingested at least one supplement dose of iron), with multiple imputations to replace missing data. Effect estimates will be adjusted for baseline covariates (C-reactive protein, alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, haemoglobin, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor). Discussion This study will determine if therapeutic supplementation with haem iron is more efficacious than with conventional ferrous sulphate in enhancing haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations in anaemic children aged 6–12 months. Introduction: The spectrum of haematological and non haematological disorders is vast in various age groups. Complete blood counts and other routine laboratory tests are not always sufficient to diagnose these diseases. Bone marrow examination plays an important role in diagnosing their underlying causes. Aim: To analyse the spectrum of various haematological and non haematological disorders reported in Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA) and compare them with Bone Marrow Trephine Biopsy (BMB) and Flow Cytometry (FCM) findings where applicable. Materials and Methods: A one-year cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Clinical Pathology, PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana, India from April 2022 to March 2023. A total of 518 consecutive BMA samples were morphologically analysed. Comparative evaluations were performed among BMA, BMB, and FCM where applicable. Diagnostic accuracy was calculated, and the findings of discordant cases were tabulated. Definitive diagnosis of lymphoma/leukaemia and Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH) cases were made using FCM. Results: The patients’ ages ranged from three months to 86 years, with a mean age of 38.4 years. The male to female ratio was 1.3:1, with a slight male predominance. The highest number of cases were of anaemia {183 (35.3%) and 164 (31.7%), respectively} and leukaemia {128 (24.7%) and 134 (25.9%), respectively}, followed by normal marrow studies {39 (7.5%) and 32 (6.2%), respectively} and megakaryocytic thrombocytopenia {24 (4.6% in each} in both BMA and biopsy. Among anaemia cases {183 and 164 cases in BMA and BMB}, the majority were of the megaloblastic type {62 (33.8%) and 54 (32.9%), respectively}, followed by hypoplastic/aplastic type {40 (21.8%) and 50 (30.5%), respectively}. In cases of leukaemia (128 and 134 cases in BMA and BMB), acute leukaemia cases (76 (59.4%) and 82 (61.2%), respectively} outnumbered chronic leukaemia cases {52 (40.6%) and 52 (38.8%), respectively} in both BMA and BMB. The concordance and discordance rate between BMA and BMB were 87.6% (419 cases) and 12.4% (59 cases), respectively. Diagnosis was exclusively made by BMB in cases of myelofibrosis, granulomatous disease, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Conclusion: BMA cytology is a relatively safe and mildly invasive technique for evaluating various haematological and non haematological disorders with better preservation of cellular morphology. However, in cases with dry/blood taps and focal marrow involvement, BMB should be performed, as it shows well-preserved marrow architecture with all its cellular and stromal components. FCM is a definitive diagnostic modality for further categorisation of acute leukaemia and Chronic Lymphoproliferative Disorders (CLPD).

Background: Worldwide there are more than 1.2 billion adolescents, more than half of all adolescents live in Asia. Anemia is one of the most common health conditions contributing to morbidity among adolescents. Hence, this study was undertaken to know the prevalence of anemia among adolescents. Objective: To assess the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent boys and girls in rural area. Methods: A community based, cross sectional study was conducted among 600 adolescents in rural area of Dharwad. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaire consisting of demographic details. Hemoglobin estimation was done by Sahli’s method. Data was analyzed using SPSS v21.0. Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) patients with anaemia tend to have a worse outcome, with increased hospitalization rates, decreased exercise tolerance, and higher mortality compared to those without anaemia. Limited research exists on the association between selenium deficiency and anaemia specifically in HF patients, despite previous findings of a correlation in different populations. The BIOSTAT‐CHF study demonstrated that higher selenium levels in HF patients were associated to a lower risk of anaemia and iron deficiency. This study investigates the relationship between selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations, a major contributor and functional biomarker of selenium transport, and anaemia, Hb levels, and iron status in hospitalized HF patients. INTRODUCTION: Malaria during pregnancy remains a public health issue. The most deadly plasmodium, Plasmodium falciparum, kills about 40% of the world's population, especially pregnant women and children under five. In pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum, MDA, CAT, H2O2, SOD, and GPx were measured as oxidative stress markers and SAA and CRP as acute-phase proteins. METHODS: A total of 90 subjects were recruited for this study, which was subdivided into 30 pregnant women infected with malaria (PWM), 35 pregnant women not infected with malaria (PWN), and 25 healthy women without pregnancy (WWP) who served as the control groups. 5mls of venous blood was collected and dispensed into appropriate bottles for malaria parasite assessment using a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and MDA, CAT, H2O2, SOD, GPx, SAA, and CRP analysis using conventional laboratory techniques. Abstract Background Women in their reproductive age have tremendous health implications that affect their health and well-being. Anaemia is an indicator of inadequate dietary intake and poor health. Maternal malnutrition significantly impacts maternal and child health outcomes, increasing the mother's risk of dying during delivery. High-risk fertility behaviour is a barrier to reducing mother and child mortality. This study aims to examine the level of high-risk fertility behaviour and anaemia among ever-married urban Indian women and also examine the linkages between the both. Methods Based on the National Family Health Survey's fifth round of data, the study analyzed 44,225 samples of ever-married urban women. Univariate and bivariate analysis and binary logistic regression have been used for the analysis. Results Findings suggested that more than half (55%) of the urban women were anaemic, and about one-fourth (24%) of women had any high-risk fertility behaviour. Furthermore, the results suggest that 20% of women were more vulnerable to anaemia due to high-risk fertility behaviour. For the specific category, 19% and 28% of women were more likely to be anaemic due to single and multiple high-risk fertility. However, after controlling for sociodemographic factors, the findings showed a statistically significant link between high-risk fertility behaviour and anaemia. As a result, 16% of the women were more likely to be anaemic due to high-risk fertility behaviour, and 16% and 24% were more likely to be anaemic due to single and multiple high-risk fertility behaviour, respectively. Conclusions The findings exposed that maternal high-risk fertility behaviour is a significant factor in raising the chance of anaemia in ever-married urban women of reproductive age in forms of the short birth interval, advanced maternal age, and advanced maternal age & higher order. Policy and choice-based family planning techniques should be employed to minimize the high-risk fertility behaviour among Indian urban women. This might aid in the reduction of the malnutrition status of their children.

Introduction: The iron requirement of the body increases during this period and resulting into anemia. National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-20), about 65% women (15-49 y) and about 62% of pregnant women were suffering from various degrees of anemia in Gujarat. Current study is the part of the innovation pilot project in which counselling was very important component. It motivated the beneficiaries to increase uptake of project services. Thus, the current paper is designed with the aim and objective to analyse the effect of counselling done for all the beneficiaries (Pregnant women and adolescent girls) in context for their improvement in anaemia status. Materials and Methods: The current study, conducted between June 2020 to March 2021 in Bhanvad Taluka of DevBhoomi Dwarka, Gujarat, is part of the innovation pilot Anaemia Project under ICDS. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, the study focused on 60 pregnant women and 304 adolescent girls, selected through simple random sampling. Verbal Informed Consent was obtained from each participant, and a semi-structured, pilot-tested questionnaire was administered in the local language by the evaluation team. The active involvement of counsellors, including FHW/ MS/ FHS/ ASHA, added a crucial dimension to the project, enhancing its effectiveness and outreach. Results: it was found that overall anemia burden among beneficiaries was reduced (9.34%) considering baseline and endline data taken during the study. This reduction was more seen among PWs (18.33%) as compared to AGs (7.56%). Conclusion: The results showed that nutrition education and counselling positively influenced the intake of dietary iron and vitamin C-rich foods.

Disseminated tuberculosis (TB) is a TB infection involving two or more noncontiguous sites. It is a challenging medical care due to its misleading presentation. Although it is associated with immunodepression, rare cases have been described in immunocompetent patients.We report the case of a 27-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with an altered general condition and dyspnea. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed pulmonary masses and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Sputum smear microscopy for acid-fast bacilli was negative. Scannoguided transparietal lung biopsy was performed twice with inflammatory tissue in histological study. A surgical lung biopsy was then made. The histopathology report confirmed TB involving lung, pleura and lymph nodes. A few days after antituberculosis therapy was started, the patient developed psychomotor slowing related to quadriportal hydrocephalus. He benefited from ventriculoperitoneal bypass. Polymerase chain reaction for detection of Mycobacterium TB was positive in cerebrospinal fluid.In conclusion: The diagnosis of disseminated TB is challenging owing to its non-specific clinical and radiological presentation and the frequent negativity of biological fluids for tubercle bacilli. Molecular biology should always be considered in front of lingering symptoms, particularly in endemic areas, given their speed and sensitivity, thus avoiding invasive diagnostic procedures, as was the case with our patient.

Anaemia is a disorder marked by low blood levels of haemoglobin (HGB), affecting people of all ages and ethnicities and is a major global public health concern. Anaemia must be diagnosed as soon as possible to enable prompt treatment and intervention, which can reduce complications and enhance patient outcomes. With the ability to improve diagnostic precision and expedite patient care procedures, machine learning (ML) has become a potent instrument in the healthcare industry. Hence, we examine the use of ML approaches to predict haemoglobin-like anaemia in this research article. Based on a heterogeneous dataset of blood markars, we investigate the performance of many machine learning techniques such as Logistic Regression, CatBoost, XgBoost Decision Trees, KNN and others. The algorithms are further ensembled using a customized stacking approach. The ML models' judgments are interpreted using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods. The xgboost and the stacking classifier obtained an accuracy, precision and recall of 99% each. Our research shows how ML models can help with the early diagnosis and treatment of anaemia, which will ultimately lead to better patient outcomes and healthcare results. Overall, the research shows how ML emphasizes the value of interdisciplinary cooperation in solving challenging medical problems.

Introduction Anaemia occurs due to an imbalance between erythrocyte production and loss. This imbalance can be due to ineffective erythropoiesis, blood loss or haemolysis. Whilst there are many causes for anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) remains the predominant cause worldwide.Areas covered There have been many updated guidelines on the management of IDA in the past few years. As the reasons for IDA are many, evaluation requires thorough analysis and focused investigations. As an asymptomatic disease in the early stages, IDA can lead to many mistakes in its management. This review highlights potential mistakes in assessing and managing IDA and recommendations to avoid them.Conclusion The effective management of IDA necessitates a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. By recognising and addressing the common mistakes highlighted in this narrative review, healthcare professionals can improve patient outcomes, minimise complications, and enhance the overall quality of care.

The effect of the incorporation of roasted garden cress seed powder (RGCSP) in the diet of girls with anaemia on Hb level and quality was evaluated. Twenty-two girls were selected and their Hb levels were estimated. Out of twenty-two girls, fifteen girls were found to be anemic and were selected for the study and it was found that four girls had mild, nine had moderate and two had severe degree of anaemia. The girls' average Hb levels dramatically raised from 8.9 to 10.4 g/dL following a 60-day intervention that also included RGCSP. Research on garden cress seed powder (GCSP) showed that roasting decreased the amount of moisture, protein, carbohydrate, and zinc while increasing the amount of ash, fat, crude fiber, and iron. Four distinct formulations were created with various amounts of GCSP (5 %, 10 %, 15 %, and 20 %) to generate fortified chikki. The chikki with 15 % GCSP had the highest overall acceptance rating of among them. Compared to the control chikki, this enriched variety had higher percentages of protein (6.95 %), fat (15.87 %), moisture (4.60 %), fiber (3.95 %), and calorie content (456.23 kcal/100 g). Supplemented chikki made by fortifying with RGCSP was rich in nutritional composition.

Although anaemia is a common life-threatening condition among pregnant women, particularly those in low-income countries, literature remains very limited in Ghana in general and particularly in the Madina La-Nkwantanang Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, where no studies have been done. This study, therefore, assessed anaemia in pregnant women attending the Pentecost Hospital in the La-Nkwantanang Municipality, Ghana. This cross-sectional study conveniently recruited 300 Ghanaian pregnant women attending the Madina Pentecost Hospital for antenatal care. A structured questionnaire was administered to obtain data on sociodemographics (age, marital status, level of education, occupation and religion) and knowledge level of anaemia. Blood samples were taken for an automated complete blood count (CBC). SPSS software version 26 and GraphPad Prism were used for the statistical analysis. The prevalence rate of anaemia was 211/300 (70.3%). 159 (75.4%) of the anaemic subjects presented with a mild anaemia form, 51(24.2%) presented with a moderate form, and 1(0.47%) presented with severe form. Normocytic normochromic anaemia was the dominant anaemia type (33.6%), followed by microcytic normochromic anaemia (27.0%), and then normocytic hypochromic (24.64%). Pregnant women within their third trimester recorded the highest incidence rates of both normocytic normochromic 34 (47.89%) and mild types 71 (44.65%) of anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women is overwhelmingly high with a preponderance towards those in their third trimester. As such, high-risk pregnant women should be well-monitored to prevent exacerbating the condition.

AbstractBackground: Iron deficiency is one of the leading causes of anaemia, with those most affected being children and women of childbearing age, in Brazil there is a scarcity of studies involving the local prevalence of anaemia. Aim: To evaluate anaemia and associated factors in schoolchildren in Santa Cruz do Sul through the analysis of biochemical and haematological markers and parasitological examination of faeces. Subjects and methods: School children from 10 to 12 years of age were evaluated through complete blood count, serum ferritin, C-reactive protein and stool parasitological examination, as well as socio-demographic characteristics and prophylaxis with ferrous sulphate in childhood. Results: It was found that 13.0% of the population was anaemic, girls were very slightly overrepresented among the anaemic children. Only 5.3% had altered haematocrit levels; 26.6% had low Mean Corpuscular Volume levels; 18.4% had low ferritin levels; 2.4% had increased C-reactive protein levels, and 21.7% had altered eosinophils. As for the socioeconomic level, classes A2 and D presented lower haemoglobin levels, as well as class D presenting lower ferritin levels, although without statistical significance. Only 6.0% of the population presented iron-deficiency anaemia and 46.0% of the schoolchildren had used ferrous sulphate supplementation in childhood. Conclusion: The prevalence of anaemia in the studied municipality is low, probably due to the high municipal human development index. Epidemiological studies are essential to characterise the population in a systematic form, to prevent future problems.

Background In endometrial cancer (EC), preoperative anaemia, thrombocytosis and leucocytosis appear to be associated with worse prognosis. It remains unclear whether these parameters solely reflect tumour aggressiveness, or also impact response to adjuvant treatment. Therefore, our primary aim is to evaluate the prognostic relevance of anaemia, thrombocytosis and leucocytosis on survival in EC. Secondary, to explore their predictive relevance in response to radiotherapy in EC.Methods A retrospective multicentre cohort study was performed within 10 hospitals. Preoperative haematological parameters were defined as: Anaemia – haemoglobin 400 × 109 platelets/L, leucocytosis – leukocytes >10 × 109/L. The relationship of haematological parameters with clinicopathological characteristics, ESGO/ESTRO/ESP risk groups and survival were evaluated. Furthermore, the predictive value of haematological parameters was determined on the overall response to adjuvant radiotherapy and for the ESGO/ESTRO/ESP intermediate-risk group solely receiving radiotherapy.Results A total of 894 patients were included with a median follow-up of 4.5 years. Anaemia was present in 103 (11.5%), thrombocytosis in 79 (8.8%) and leucocytosis in 114 (12.7%) patients. The presence of anaemia or thrombocytosis was significantly associated with ESGO/ESTRO/ESP high-risk (respectively, P = 0.002 and P = 0.041). In the entire cohort, anaemia remained independently associated with decreased disease-specific survival (HR 2.31, 95% CI (1.19–4.50), P = 0.013) after adjusting for age, the abnormal haematological parameters and ESGO/ESTRO/ESP risk groups. In patients that were treated with adjuvant radiotherapy (n = 239), anaemia was associated with significant reduced 5-year disease-specific and recurrence-free survival (P = 0.005 and P = 0.025, respectively). In ESGO/ESTRO/ESP intermediate risk patients that received solely vaginal brachytherapy (n = 74), anaemia was associated with reduced disease-specific survival (P = 0.041).Conclusions Current data demonstrate the importance of preoperative anaemia as independent prognostic factor in patients with EC. Moreover, anaemia seems to be associated with reduced response to radiotherapy. Prospective validation in a larger study cohort is needed to verify anaemia as predictive biomarker for radiotherapy.What is already known on this subject? Specific applied adjuvant treatment is needed if patients with anaemia have a reduced response to radiotherapy in EC. Prospective validation in a larger study cohort is required to verify anaemia as predictive biomarker for radiotherapy and to further evaluate the prognostic/predictive impact of anaemia in addition to the molecular subgroups.

Anaemia is a common sequela of surgery, although its relationship with patient recovery is unclear. The goal of this investigation was to assess the associations between haemoglobin concentrations at the time of hospital discharge following major surgery and early post-hospitalisation outcomes, with a primary outcome of 30 day unanticipated hospital readmissions. This investigation includes data from two independent population-based observational cohorts of adult surgical patients (aged ≥ 18 years) requiring postoperative intensive care unit admission between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019 in hospitals in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2017 in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California integrated healthcare system, California. Cox proportional hazards models assessed the associations between discharge haemoglobin concentrations (per 10 g.l-1 ) and outcomes, with prespecified multivariable adjustment. A total of 3260 patients were included from Olmsted County hospitals and 29,452 from Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Summary: The hexokinase (HK) enzyme plays a key role in red blood cell energy production. Hereditary non‐spherocytic haemolytic anaemia (HNSHA) caused by HK deficiency is a rare disorder with only 12 different disease‐associated variants identified. Here, we describe the clinical features and genotypes of four previously unreported patients with hexokinase 1 (HK1)‐related HNSHA, yielding two novel truncating HK1 variants. The patients' phenotypes varied from mild chronic haemolytic anaemia to severe infantile‐onset transfusion‐dependent anaemia. Three of the patients had mild haemolytic disease caused by the common HK1 promoter c.‐193A>G variant combined with an intragenic HK1 variant, emphasizing the importance of including this promoter variant in the haemolytic disease gene panels. HK activity was normal in a severely affected patient with a homozygous HK1 c.2599C>T, p.(His867Tyr) variant, but the affinity for ATP was reduced, hampering the HK function. In cases of HNSHA, kinetic studies should be considered in the functional studies of HK. Summary: We assessed the diagnostic potential of erythroferrone as a biomarker for iron homeostasis comparing iron deficiency cases with anaemia of inflammation and controls. The dysregulation of the hepcidin axis was observed by Latour et al. in a mouse model of malarial anaemia induced by prolonged Plasmodium infection leading to increased erythroferrone concentrations. In line with that, we found significantly higher erythroferrone levels in cases with malaria and anaemia in an African population, compared to asymptomatic controls. Therefore, our findings extend the previous ones of the mouse model, suggesting also a dysregulation of the hepcidin axis in humans, which should be further corroborated in prospective studies and may lay the basis for the development of improved treatment strategies according to ERFE concentrations in such patients. Insects, a traditional food in many parts of the world, are highly nutritious and especially rich in proteins and thus represent a potential food and protein source. They are rich in essential amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids and provide ample quantities of minerals such as Fe, Zn, Mn, Ca, and P essential for human health. The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional value of dried edible caterpillars with an exclusive focus on mineral content. Quantitative analysis of seven essential minerals for humans was analyzed for two dried edible caterpillars currently commercialized in Bukavu town, South Kivu province (eastern DR Congo) central market including Bunaeopsis aurantiaca (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) and Imbrasia oyemensis (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). Mineral content analysis of Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, and Mn were carried out using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) while the P content was analyzed using the Colorimetric method, then the mineral content was compared to the recommended daily intakes (mg/day). On a dry weight basis, we find that mineral content differed with type of caterpillar. I. oyemensis had the highest concentrations of most minerals tested compared to B. aurantiaca, which nevertheless had the greatest amount of phosphorus (P). P was significantly the most abundant mineral detected (605.70 ± 6.08 mg/100g; p < 0.001), followed by Mg and Na in I. oyemensis with 220.11 ± 6.10 mg/100g and 216.43 ± 1.08 mg/100g respectively. Oligo-minerals Zn and Fe, were the lowest in the caterpillar samples. All the edible caterpillars analyzed met the recommended daily mineral intake. The consumption of < 28 g and < 8 g of these caterpillars covers daily RNI in adults for Fe and Mn respectively. Thus, edible caterpillars in this study have shown that they can be excellent contributors to people's mineral requirements and should be sustainably utilized. Aside from direct consumption, there is a huge potential for using these caterpillars as raw material and food fortification. Introduction: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), the most prevalent type of anaemia, is recognised as a significant global health concern that affects individuals of all ages. Case Presentation: Herein, we present a case involving an adult male coinfected with Helicobacter pylori and Giardia duodenalis, which precipitated severe IDA. Results: A 24-year-old male presented with symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea persisting for four weeks. Thorough blood tests, including complete blood counts, blood film, and iron studies, conclusively established the presence of severe IDA. Furthermore, his faecal sample was collected and subjected to analysis of common bacterial and parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Examination of upper and lower gastrointestinal pathogens indicated that the severe IDA was most likely a result of coinfection with H. pylori and G. duodenalis. The patient received treatment involving antibiotics and iron replacement therapy, which resulted in an improvement in both his symptoms and laboratory results. Conclusions: The present report provides crucial insights into the synergistic effect of concurrent H. pylori and G. duodenalis infections, highlighting their potential to induce severe IDA in infected patients. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in children. Treatment usually consists of oral iron therapy and, if severe, inpatient hospitalisation with blood transfusion. Providers may also undertake an echocardiogram, depending on availability and the severity of anaemia. A male toddler with nutritional IDA, haemoglobin of 1.7 g/dL (the lowest level in the literature) and hypertension had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) on the initial echocardiogram. He was managed acutely with judicious blood transfusion, followed by oral iron supplementation and anti-hypertensive medication at discharge. Repeat echocardiogram a month later demonstrated slight improvement of the LVH but the hypertension persisted at follow-up 6 months later. There was complete resolution of the findings a year later. In chronic nutritional IDA, there can be structural cardiac changes which can affect the acute management and requires close follow-up. It is important to use echocardiography in such severe cases. Anaemia is one of the most common complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD), having a significant impact on quality of life, and is also associated with a number of adverse clinical outcomes. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial, caused largely by an inadequate production of erythropoietin from the diseased kidneys, with iron deficiency, inflammation, shortened red cell lifespan and enhanced blood loss also being contributory factors. The management of this condition was transformed in the late 1980s by the advent of recombinant human erythropoietin (epoetin), and treatment paradigms have developed over the last three decades, largely focusing on a combination of epoetin or its analogues (erythropoiesis-stimulating agents; ESAs) along with iron supplementation, often administered intravenously due to increased hepcidin levels limiting iron absorption from the gut. Indeed, in patients with early CKD and iron deficiency, iron per se may be sufficient to improve the anaemia, delaying the need for ESA therapy. Other causes of anaemia should be excluded and corrected (if possible) before resorting to treatment with ESAs and iron. More recently, the hypoxia-inducible factor–prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors have entered the therapeutic arena; these are orally active agents that upregulate endogenous erythropoietin production as well as a number of iron-regulatory genes which may also enhance erythropoiesis. The latter drugs are highly efficacious, and may have advantages in inflammatory conditions causing resistance to conventional ESA therapy, but concerns exist regarding their safety, particularly in the longer term. Introduction: Infantile Tremor Syndrome (ITS) is a condition that mainly affects infants aged 6-24 months. Although predominantly considered a disorder of vitamin B12 deficiency, there have been some reports of an association of other micronutrient deficiencies in ITS babies. Aim: To assess the clinicoaetiological profile of cases of ITS admitted to the tertiary care centre. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study conducted at Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar, Punjab, India. All cases of ITS admitted to the Paediatric ward from April 2022 to March 2023 were enrolled. Their case records were studied for clinical signs and symptoms like presenting complaints, demographic profile, feeding history, history of tremors, and developmental milestones. Examination findings were studied for the degree of malnutrition, presence of anaemia, knuckle hyperpigmentation, sparse hypopigmented hair, other evidence of micronutrient deficiency, hepatosplenomegaly, and any focal neurological deficit. Laboratory parameters, mainly blood counts, haemoglobin, Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), peripheral smear findings, vitamin D and B12 levels, and serum albumin, were analysed to ascertain the clinicoaetiological profile of ITS. Results: A total of 19 cases were included in the study. All of them had sparse hypopigmented hair and anaemia. Thirteen (68.4%) had knuckle hyperpigmentation, 11 (58%) had tremors, and 16 (84.2%) had developmental delay/regression without any other underlying cause. Only 9 (47.4%) had laboratory evidence of vitamin B12 deficiency, while 14 (73.7%) had vitamin D deficiency. All the babies were discharged home, and tremors resolved in all of them after vitamin D, B12, and zinc therapy. Conclusion: In addition to vitamin B12, Vitamin D deficiency was seen in most cases of ITS. Hence, all patients with ITS need to be evaluated and treated for vitamin B12 as well as vitamin D deficiency for optimal treatment of this disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 4-year-old female Golden Retriever presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex of the College revealed the clinico-pathological findings such as fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, pale mucous membranes, dehydration, haemorrhage, hind limb pain; anaemia, leukocytosis, lymphocytosis, monocytopenia, eosinopenia; elevated ALT, ALP, total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, BUN, and CRP; with proteinuria, bilirubinuria, and haematuria. The oxidative stress indices revealed decreased TAOA and SOD, and increased LPO levels. Blood smear examination revealed the presence of intracytoplasmatic inclusions in neutrophils associated with high positive serology for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Species-specific PCR analysis confirmed serological diagnosis of A. phagocytophilum. Data indicates that A. phagocytophilum circulates in natural environments of the northeast region of India and its prevalence in dogs could be underestimated because the clinical signs are frequently nonspecific and a certain diagnosis requires the combination of clinicopathological and molecular assays. Background Acute gastrointestinal bleeding (AGIB) is common in older patients but the use of iron in this context remains understudied. Aims This study aimed to evaluate prospectively the efficacy of ferric carboxymaltose to treat anaemia in older patients after AGIB. Methods This randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in 10 French centres. Eligible patients were 65 years or more, had controlled upper or lower gastrointestinal bleeding and a haemoglobin level of 9–11 g/dl. Patients were randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive either one intravenous iron injection of ferric carboxymaltose or one injection of saline solution. The primary endpoint was the difference in haemoglobin level between day 0 and day 42. Secondary endpoints were treatment-emergent adverse events, serious adverse events, rehospitalisation and improvement of quality of life (QOL) at day 180. Results From January 2013 to January 2017, 59 patients were included. The median age of patients was 81.9 [75.8, 87.3] years. At day 42, a significant difference in haemoglobin level increase was observed (2.49 g/dl in the ferric carboxymaltose group vs. 1.56 g/dl in the placebo group, P  = 0.02). At day 180, QOL, measured on European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30, improved by 10.5 points in the ferric carboxymaltose group and by 8.2 points in the placebo group (P  = 0.56). Rates of adverse events and rehospitalisation were similar in the two groups. Background: Maintaining normal amniotic fluid index and normal hemoglobin level is crucial for normal fetal development. Their reduction can lead to maternal and fetal morbidity in the form of operative delivery and poor perinatal outcome such as, low birth weight. There is an association between oligohydramnios and anaemia, although there is scarcity on this correlation in literature. Early detection of oligohydramnios can improve maternal and perinatal outcome. This study aimed to investigate the association between oligohydramnios and anaemia during the third trimester of pregnancy. Methodology: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at NESCOM Hospital, Pakistan. The study spanned from August 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022. Results: The study included 109 pregnant individuals with oligohydramnios, resulting in an incidence of 22% among the total of 551 deliveries during the study period. The average age of participants was 29.75 years. The average gestational age was 33.52 weeks, with a range of 28 to 38 weeks. The analysis indicated that 44.03% of cases with oligohydramnios were associated with anaemia, followed by idiopathic causes (41.28%). Pearson's correlation revealed a significant association between oligohydramnios and anaemia (r = 0.307, p = 0.001), supporting the hypothesis of a potential interconnection between these two conditions. Regarding delivery outcomes, 81.6% underwent cesarean section, emphasizing the need for careful management in cases of oligohydramnios and anaemia. Neonatal outcomes indicated that 1.8% and 44.5% of neonates were extremely low birth weight and low birth weight, respectively. Background: Olaparib is an inhibitor of the human poly-(ADP-ribose)-polymerase enzymes (PARP1/2) needed to repair single-strand DNA breaks. It is used in breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Objectives: This work aimed to describe the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/ PD) relationship between olaparib plasma concentrations and common adverse effects (i.e. anaemia and hypercreatininaemia), in a real-life setting, to propose a target concentration for therapeutic drug monitoring. Methods: Two PK/PD models describing the evolution of haemoglobinaemia and creatininaemia as a function of time were developed, based on data from, respectively, 38 and 37 patients receiving olaparib. The final model estimates were used to calculate the incidence of anaemia and creatinine increase according to plasma trough concentrations for 1000 virtual subjects to define target exposure. Results: The final models correctly described the temporal evolution of haemoglobinaemia and creatininaemia for all patients. The haemoglobinaemia PK/PD model is inspired by Friberg's model, and the creatininaemia PK/PD model is an indirect response model. Model parameters were in agreement with physiological values and close to literature values for similar models. The mean (population) plasma haemoglobin concentration at treatment initiation, as estimated by the model, was 11.62 g/dL, while creatinine concentration was 71.91 µmol/L. Using simulations, we have identified a target trough concentration of 3500-- 4000 ng/mL, above which more than 20% of patients would report grade ≥ 3 anaemia. Background and Aims What is the relationship between blood tests for iron deficiency, including anaemia, and the response to intravenous iron in patients with heart failure? Methods In the IRONMAN trial, 1137 patients with heart failure, ejection fraction ≤ 45%, and either serum ferritin < 100 µg/L or transferrin saturation (TSAT) < 20% were randomized to intravenous ferric derisomaltose (FDI) or usual care. Relationships were investigated between baseline anaemia severity, ferritin and TSAT, to changes in haemoglobin from baseline to 4 months, Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (MLwHF) score and 6-minute walk distance achieved at 4 months, and clinical events, including heart failure hospitalization (recurrent) or cardiovascular death. Results The rise in haemoglobin after administering FDI, adjusted for usual care, was greater for lower baseline TSAT (P interaction <.0001) and ferritin (P interaction =.028) and more severe anaemia (P interaction =.014). MLwHF scores at 4 months were somewhat lower (better) with FDI for more anaemic patients (overall P interaction =.14; physical P interaction =.085; emotional P interaction =.043) but were not related to baseline TSAT or ferritin. Blood tests did not predict difference in achieved walking distance for those randomized to FDI compared to control. The absence of anaemia or a TSAT ≥ 20% was associated with lower event rates and little evidence of benefit from FDI. More severe anaemia or TSAT < 20%, especially when ferritin was ≥100 µg/L, was associated with higher event rates and greater absolute reductions in events with FDI, albeit not statistically significant. Conclusions This hypothesis-generating analysis suggests that anaemia or TSAT < 20% with ferritin > 100 µg/L might identify patients with heart failure who obtain greater benefit from intravenous iron. AbstractWe investigated predictors of olaparib discontinuation owing to adverse effects. Patients with ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancers treated with olaparib at Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital between April 2018 and September 2022 were included in this study. The exclusion criteria were as follows: discontinuation of treatment due to disease progression, use of anaemia medications, and use of cytochrome P450 (CYP3A4) inhibitors. The follow-up period was 90 d. Of the 46 eligible patients, 21 patients discontinued olaparib, including 15 patients with grade 3 or higher anaemia, eight patients with grade 3 or higher neutropenia, and four patients with non-haematological toxicity (including multiple onset). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that grade 4 neutropenia and anaemia progression to grades 2–3 due to chemotherapy administered before olaparib administration were predictors of olaparib discontinuation. Summary: The thrombotic risk with haemoglobin C trait (HbAC) or haemoglobin C disease (HbCC) is unclear. However, individuals with HbCC have demonstrated chronic haemolysis, higher blood viscosity and altered rheology when compared to individuals with wild‐type haemoglobin (HbAA). These physiological alterations may theoretically translate to increased risk of thrombosis; therefore, a systematic literature review was performed to investigate the possible association between HbAC and/or HbCC and thrombosis. Twenty‐two studies met inclusion criteria representing 782 individuals with HbAC (n = 694) or HbCC (n = 88). Fifteen studies described the presence/absence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with HbAC (n = 685) or HbCC (n = 79), while seven studies described patients with HbAC (n = 9) or HbCC (n = 9) and arterial thrombosis. Most (n = 20) studies were case reports or case series; however, two studies suggested a potential increased VTE risk with HbAC compared to HbAA in (i) all patients (OR 2.2, 95% CI: 0.9–5.5) and in (ii) pregnant individuals (RR 3.7, 95% CI 0.9–16). This review is the largest assessment of patients with HbC trait or disease and thrombosis to date; despite its limitations, the findings suggest HbC may be a predisposing risk factor to thrombosis. Summary: The symptoms and sequelae of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) are caused by the polymerization of deoxygenated sickle haemoglobin, and people with SCA may be uniquely susceptible to adverse outcomes from hypoxia and haemoglobin desaturation. We examined by oximetry adults (aged 18–45 years) with SCA presenting symptoms indicative of polysomnography, at a single institution, irrespective of treatment, for nocturnal hypoxaemia. Clinical labs and blood for in vitro assessments were taken upon enrolment and after 8–12 weeks of oxygen therapy or observation. Of 21 screened participants, nine (43%) had sufficient nocturnal hypoxaemia to warrant oxygen therapy (≥5 min at SpO2 ≤ 88%). Time spent at SpO2 ≤ 88% associated with age (p = 0.0092), annual hospitalizations (p = 0.0018) and anaemia (p = 0.0139), as well as plasma levels of TNFα (p = 0.0019) and IL‐4 (p = 0.0147). Longitudinal analysis showed that WBC significantly decreased during the follow‐up period in hypoxic individuals but not in non‐hypoxic individuals (p = 0.0361 and p = 0.6969 respectively). Plasma levels of CCL2 and IL‐1ra tended to increase, while levels of red blood cell reactive oxygen species tended to decrease with oxygen therapy. Overall, nocturnal hypoxaemia was common in this pilot study population and associated with plausible clinical comorbidities; oxygen therapy may decrease inflammation and oxidative damage in hypoxic individuals. Background: Hemoglobinopathies, a diverse group of genetic disorders affecting hemoglobin synthesis or structure, pose substantial public health challenges worldwide. Understanding their prevalence and spectrum, especially among reproductive-age females, is crucial for planning effective prevention and treatment strategies. Aim: This prospective observational study aimed to investigate the frequency of hemoglobinopathies among reproductive-age females in a rural tertiary care centre in Haryana using highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Materials and Methods: Over the course of one year, 149 females aged 15 to 45 years were included in the study. Blood samples were collected and analysed using HPLC to identify haemoglobin abnormalities. Results: Haemoglobin HPLC analysis revealed haemoglobinopathies in 14.1% of cases, with ß-thalassemia trait being the most prevalent (11.4%). Other hemoglobinopathies identified included HbD Punjab trait and HbE trait. Haematological indices provided insights into different parameters across various hemoglobinopathies. Conclusion: Hemoglobinopathies represent a significant healthcare challenge in India, particularly among women of reproductive age. This study emphasizes the importance of screening for carriers using haemoglobin HPLC, as it facilitates the provision of tailored counselling and management strategies to alleviate the impact of these disorders. Aim: Anaemia is a prevalent medical condition that impacts a significant proportion of the worldwide populace. While the cardiovascular and respiratory systems' influence on anaemia has been extensively researched, its effect on the auditory system remains unclear. The objective of this investigation was to assess the pure tone audiometry of individuals with anaemia and establish a connection between the type of hearing impairment and the level of anaemia, if any. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 100 patients who were diagnosed with anaemia. All study participants underwent a thorough general examination and hearing assessment, which encompassed tuning fork tests, and pure-tone audiometry. Statistical analysis was utilized to determine the type and severity of hearing loss and its correlation with the degree of anaemia. Results: Our research findings indicate that 46.8% of moderately anaemic patients and 62.9% of patients with severe anaemia exhibited sensorineural hearing loss. A significant correlation was observed between the degree of anaemia (p < 0.05) and hearing loss. Our research findings indicate that individuals with moderate and severe anaemia exhibit a notably greater incidence of hearing impairment in comparison to those with mild anaemia. Conclusion: The research findings thus suggest a potential correlation between anaemia and auditory impairment. The timely identification and management of anaemia could potentially play a crucial role in preventing or reducing hearing impairment among individuals with anaemia. Additional research is required to clarify the mechanisms that underlie this association and to investigate possible interventions for mitigating the risk of hearing impairment in individuals with anaemia. Aim: Patients undergoing dialysis are at high risk for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Haemoglobin (Hb) levels may be changed in patients infected with the Omicron variant of COVID‐19 who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Therefore, we aimed to explore the effect of anti‐anaemia treatment on such patients. Methods: This study enrolled patients undergoing PD who were infected with the Omicron variant of COVID‐19 at our centre between November 2022 and February 2023. We retrospectively analysed changes in Hb levels and explored the effectiveness of roxadustat and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) for patients infected with the Omicron variant of COVID‐19. Results: Among 125 enrolled patients, 83 (66.4%) were infected with the Omicron variant and 75 (90.4%) patients mainly experienced mild or moderate disease. During infection, C‐reactive protein (CRP) levels were higher than those before infection (p <.001). Additionally, their CRP levels were negatively correlated with Hb levels (p =.002). However, Hb levels were decreased 1 month after infection (109.61 ± 10.64 g/L vs. 115.69 ± 12.04 g/L; p <.001). The roxadustat treatment group did not exhibit significantly decreased Hb levels 1 month after infection (114.57 ± 14.11 vs. 117.51 ± 10.74 g/L; p =.225). Conversely, the rhEPO treatment group experienced a mild decrease in Hb levels (108.69 ± 11.20 vs. 115.03 ± 12.23 g/L; p =.001). Ferritin levels increased in both groups during infection (p =.495). Two months after infection, ferritin levels (median, 205.0 ng/mL) were significantly decreased compared with during infection (median, 377.4 ng/mL) (p <.001) in the roxadustat treatment group. Background The trajectories of haemoglobin in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been poorly described. In such patients, we aimed to identify typical haemoglobin trajectory profiles and estimate their risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods We used 5-year longitudinal data from the CKD-REIN cohort patients with moderate to severe CKD enrolled from 40 nationally representative nephrology clinics in France. A joint latent class model was used to estimate, in different classes of haemoglobin trajectory, the competing risks of (i) MACE + defined as the first event among cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke or hospitalization for acute heart failure, (ii) initiation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) and (iii) non-cardiovascular death. Results During the follow-up, we gathered 33 874 haemoglobin measurements from 3011 subjects (median, 10 per patient). We identified five distinct haemoglobin trajectory profiles. The predominant profile (n  = 1885, 62.6%) showed an overall stable trajectory and low risks of events. The four other profiles had nonlinear declining trajectories: early strong decline (n  = 257, 8.5%), late strong decline (n  = 75, 2.5%), early moderate decline (n  = 356, 11.8%) and late moderate decline (n  = 438, 14.6%). The four profiles had different risks of MACE, while the risks of KRT and non-cardiovascular death consistently increased from the haemoglobin decline. Conclusion In this study, we observed that two-thirds of patients had a stable haemoglobin trajectory and low risks of adverse events. The other third had a nonlinear trajectory declining at different rates, with increased risks of events. Better attention should be paid to dynamic changes of haemoglobin in CKD. Background: There are limited data relating to the effects of metformin‐associated vitamin B12 deficiency on the risk of distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) and megaloblastic anaemia in well‐characterised community‐based cohorts. Aims: To assess inter‐relationships between metformin therapy, vitamin B12 deficiency assessed using serum active B12 concentrations, and DSPN and anaemia in 1492 Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase 2 (FDS2) participants with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Prevalence rates of vitamin B12 deficiency (total <80 pmol/L, active <23 pmol/L) and borderline deficiency (total ≥80 and ≤200 pmol/L, active ≥23 and ≤35 pmol/L) were determined using baseline sera. The relationship between vitamin B12 status and both DSPN and anaemia was assessed using multivariable analyses. Results: Most FDS2 participants (94.4%) were vitamin B12 replete (total serum concentration >200 pmol/L, active >35 pmol/L), 2.0% were deficient (total <80 pmol/L, active <23 pmol/L) and the remainder (3.6%) borderline. Although metformin treatment increased the odds of deficiency (4.2%, 3.1% borderline) in a dose‐dependent fashion (odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 39.4 (4.90–316) for >2000 mg daily compared with no treatment; P < 0.001), there was no significant association between vitamin B12 status and DSPN, anaemia (haemoglobin ≤130 g/L males, ≤120 g/L females), haemoglobin concentration or mean corpuscular volume (P ≥ 0.147). Metformin increased the likelihood of anaemia, especially at high doses, independent of vitamin B12 deficiency. Conclusions: Since nutritional sources likely attenuate metformin‐associated vitamin B12 malabsorption and its clinical sequelae in developed countries such as Australia, there is no need for routine/opportunistic serum vitamin B12 screening in metformin‐treated patients. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) disrupts iron balance through systemic inflammation. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is linked to diverse anaemia types, necessitating intricate haematological and biochemical assessments for diagnosis. This study aims to describe the prevalence of anaemia of chronic disease (ACD), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) among PTB patients and factors associated with these types of anaemia. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted from community-based cohort study involving sputum-positive PTB patients from 2018 to 2020 in urban Puducherry. Participants were enrolled from 10 primary health centres within 2 weeks of initiating anti-tubercular treatment (ATT). Blood samples were collected for assessing haematological and biochemical parameters. The sTfR/log ferritin ratio was used to distinguish between ACD and IDA. Data were captured using Epicollect5 and analysed using STATA V14. Result: Of the 176 PTB patients included, 63.07% (111/176) had anaemia, with ACD being the predominant type (84.6%, 94/111). The C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were higher among the anaemic group [40.77 (16.66-58.51) mg/dl vs 24.65 (14.23-47.26) mg/dl] and higher among the ACD as compared to IDA [46.9 (22.3-61.2) vs 20.8 (13.0-39.1) mg/dl]. Undernourished [adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) =3.43; confidence interval (CI): 1.21-9.69] and patients having low risk of dependence on tobacco [APR = 1.52; CI: 1.10-2.11] had higher risk of ACD. Female patients had higher risk of IDA [APR = 4.95, P < 0.01]. Conclusion: The largest proportion of the PTB participants with anaemia had ACD. Acute-phase reactant and inflammatory marker are increased among newly diagnosed new sputum smear-positive (NSP) PTB participants at the start of ATT. Introduction: The spectrum of haematological and non haematological disorders is vast in various age groups. Complete blood counts and other routine laboratory tests are not always sufficient to diagnose these diseases. Bone marrow examination plays an important role in diagnosing their underlying causes. Aim: To analyse the spectrum of various haematological and non haematological disorders reported in Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA) and compare them with Bone Marrow Trephine Biopsy (BMB) and Flow Cytometry (FCM) findings where applicable. Materials and Methods: A one-year cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Clinical Pathology, PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana, India from April 2022 to March 2023. A total of 518 consecutive BMA samples were morphologically analysed. Comparative evaluations were performed among BMA, BMB, and FCM where applicable. Diagnostic accuracy was calculated, and the findings of discordant cases were tabulated. Definitive diagnosis of lymphoma/leukaemia and Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH) cases were made using FCM. Results: The patients' ages ranged from three months to 86 years, with a mean age of 38.4 years. The male to female ratio was 1.3:1, with a slight male predominance. The highest number of cases were of anaemia {183 (35.3%) and 164 (31.7%), respectively} and leukaemia {128 (24.7%) and 134 (25.9%), respectively}, followed by normal marrow studies {39 (7.5%) and 32 (6.2%), respectively} and megakaryocytic thrombocytopenia {24 (4.6% in each} in both BMA and biopsy. Among anaemia cases {183 and 164 cases in BMA and BMB}, the majority were of the megaloblastic type {62 (33.8%) and 54 (32.9%), respectively}, followed by hypoplastic/aplastic type {40 (21.8%) and 50 (30.5%), respectively}. In cases of leukaemia (128 and 134 cases in BMA and BMB), acute leukaemia cases (76 (59.4%) and 82 (61.2%), respectively} outnumbered chronic leukaemia cases {52 (40.6%) and 52 (38.8%), respectively} in both BMA and BMB. The concordance and discordance rate between BMA and BMB were 87.6% (419 cases) and 12.4% (59 cases), respectively. Diagnosis was exclusively made by BMB in cases of myelofibrosis, granulomatous disease, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Conclusion: BMA cytology is a relatively safe and mildly invasive technique for evaluating various haematological and non haematological disorders with better preservation of cellular morphology. However, in cases with dry/blood taps and focal marrow involvement, BMB should be performed, as it shows well-preserved marrow architecture with all its cellular and stromal components. The relevance of this study is conditioned by the need to summarise current knowledge about the use of iron-containing drugs in veterinary medicine and their scientific substantiation. The purpose of this study was to analyse the results of the latest experimental data presented in the literature on the pharmacological and toxicological properties of iron-containing drugs and the specific features of their use in veterinary medicine. The study employed the method of literature analysis with the formulation of relevant substantiated conclusions and their generalisation or comparison. Iron-containing medicines are particularly relevant in modern veterinary medicine for the prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in piglets. The use of iron dextran preparations is a scientifically sound and necessary preventive measure in modern pig production. Furthermore, the study covered new approaches to the development of effective antianaemic drugs for animals of other species, including calves. The study also covered the controversial issues of the use of iron-containing drugs in pregnant females for the prevention of iron deficiency in animals born from them. The analysis of the literature data presented in this study shows a prominent degree of scientific interest in the study of pharmacological and toxicological properties of iron in high valences (specifically, ferrous iron in clathrochelate form) with a view to their use in medicine. The conducted literature review suggests the multidirectional use of iron-containing drugs in various dosage forms in veterinary medicine. The study identified the key trends in the pharmaceutical market of iron-containing drugs registered in Ukraine. In recent years, there has been a growing body of scientifically based evidence indicating the effectiveness of iron-dextran complex in combination with micro- and macronutrients and vitamins. Currently, the use of iron-containing drugs in the world's veterinary practice, considering their scientifically and experimentally proven pharmacological properties, is extremely promising. Introduction: An imbalance in diet can lead to anaemia in young women, which can impact not only themselves, but also the next generation. This study aimed to determine associations between quantity and quality of dietary intake with haemoglobin (Hb) concentration among female adolescents in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 347 young women aged 12-18 years from ten districts in Tasikmalaya City, selected by simple random sampling. Quantity and quality of dietary intake were measured by 2-repeated 24-hour dietary recalls, while portable haemoglobinometer (HemoCue® Hb 201+) was used to measure Hb concentration. Linear regression model predicted associations between quantity and quality of dietary intake with Hb concentration in female adolescents. Results: The proportion of subjects suffering from anaemia were 47.3%. Average intake of dietary iron was 6.7±3.0 mg and average dietary quality score was 32.6%. Dietary quality score and days of menstrual bleeding contributed as much as 12.7% to the variation in Hb concentration among female adolescents. Conclusion: Anaemia in female adolescents in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia is a serious public health problem. Aims: Heart failure (HF) patients with anaemia tend to have a worse outcome, with increased hospitalization rates, decreased exercise tolerance, and higher mortality compared to those without anaemia. Limited research exists on the association between selenium deficiency and anaemia specifically in HF patients, despite previous findings of a correlation in different populations. The BIOSTAT‐CHF study demonstrated that higher selenium levels in HF patients were associated to a lower risk of anaemia and iron deficiency. This study investigates the relationship between selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations, a major contributor and functional biomarker of selenium transport, and anaemia, Hb levels, and iron status in hospitalized HF patients. Methods and results: SELENOP was analysed in 320 hospitalized HF subjects, with complete data available for 310 subjects. The relationships between continuous SELENOP concentrations and 1) Hb concentrations, 2) anaemia (Hb < 115 g/L (women), <130 g/L (men)), and 3) iron status (as measured by transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) which increases in iron deficiency) were evaluated using multivariable logistic and linear regression models. Additionally, SELENOP concentrations in the lowest quartile were related to anaemia, haemoglobin, and iron state in multivariable logistic and linear models. The mean age of the study population was 75.0 ± 11.6 years, and 30% were women. Anaemia was present in 133 subjects (42.9%). SELENOP concentrations were positively correlated with haemoglobin concentrations (0.238; P < 0.001) and negatively with TfR1 concentrations (−0.238, P < 0.001). In multivariable regression models, higher SELENOP concentrations were associated with higher Hb concentrations (B = 3.23; P = 0.002) and lower TfR1 concentrations (B = −0.20; P < 0.001). Furthermore, SELENOP deficiency was associated with lower Hb concentrations (B = −7.64: P = 0.001), higher TfR1 concentrations (B = 0.31; P = 0.003), and higher odds of anaemia in HF patients (odds ratio 2.17; 95% confidence interval 1.23–3.82; P = 0.008). South American camelids (SACs) play an increasing role in veterinary care in Europe. Many alpacas or llamas presented to veterinarians suffer from anaemia, regularly with a packed cell volume (PCV) below 0.10 l/l, which is a life-threatening condition for the animals. This review article presents clinical and laboratory diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of anaemia in SACs. Clinical identification of anaemic animals can be performed by assessing the FAMACHA© score and the Body Condition Score (BCS), since anaemia in alpacas and llamas correlates with pale mucous membranes and a lowered BCS. Haematological examination of a blood sample can provide a more differentiated diagnosis of anaemia in SACs. A common finding is regenerative anaemia with an increased number of reticulocytes that is often caused by blood loss due to Haemonchus contortus. Changes in a blood smear from an alpaca or llama with regenerative anaemia may include normoblasts (nucleated red blood cells), anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, polychromasia, Howell-Jolly bodies or basophilic stippling. Children are the most vulnerable victims of undernutrition. Undernutrition increases a child's risk of contracting common infections and also increases the frequency and severity of these illnesses in undernourished children. It is responsible for over half of all fatalities in children under the age of five. Inspite of being one of the fastest growing economies of the world, India ranks only 107th among 121 countries in terms of the global hunger index, 2022. This paper aims at estimating the relative position of various Indian states in terms of child malnutrition. For this purpose, a composite index for malnutrition was worked out for all the states on the basis of state-wise prevalence of stunting, wasting, anemia and low birth weight among children under five. The states were then ranked on the basis of malnutrition index and then classified as those having low, medium or high malnutrition. Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar and Gujarat have high incidence of child malnutrition. The northeastern states of Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and the southern state of Kerala are the best performing states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anaemia in pregnant women enrolled in a family health centre in Kütahya and to determine the proportion of pregnant women with low haemotocrit, low ferritin and vitamin B12 deficiency and some factors affecting them. Method: The population and sample of this retrospective study consisted of 91 pregnant women who were registered to Yıldırım Bayazıt FHC between 01 October and December 2021 and whose medical records were complete. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, ferritin, vitamin B12 values of pregnant women were examined. Results: The mean age of the pregnant women included in the study was 28.83±8.61 years. Anaemia was found in 7 (7.7%), low haemotochrit in 3 (3.3%), low ferritin in 67 (73.6%), and B12 deficiency in 19 (20.9%) of the pregnant women. It was found that haemoglobin, haematocrit and ferritin values of pregnant women did not differ significantly according to age, educational status, number of pregnancies, nutrition and planning status of pregnancy (p>0.05). Conclusion: Low ferritin levels were found to be high in pregnant women in our study group. Ferritin levels of pregnant women should be monitored in Family Health Centres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A one-year old male domestic short hair cat was presented to TVCC, Pookode, with severe anaemia. CBC revealed Hb 2.9 g/dL, VPRC 7.2 per cent, RBC 1.49 x106/µL and platelet count 24 x 103/µL. Mycoplasmosis and Ctenocephalides felis infestation was confirmed. Compatible blood transfusion with type A blood along with Inj. enrofloxacin @ 10mg/kg o.d. subcutaneously for 3 days followed by tab. doxycycline @ 10 mg/kg o.d. for 14 days, selamectin 6 per cent spot on 0.5 mL., resulted in significant clinical improvement. The cat was presented again with diarrhoea and vomiting with recurrence of anaemia on the 15th day post initial transfusion. Feline panleucopaenia was confirmed. CBC on the 25th day showed Hb 3.7 g/dL, VPRC 10.3 per cent, RBC 2 x106/µL and platelet count 12 x 103/µL. A typed and cross matched second blood transfusion from a different donor cat of blood type A was fixed on the 29th day. The recipient cat which was of blood type A showed acute transfusion reaction within two minutes after the onset of second transfusion and died on the table. A cluster randomized control trial study was conducted in Ballabgarh block of Faridabad District, Haryana, India. Baseline data of a total of 198 non-anemic and 202 anemic adolescent girls (12–19 years) was analyzed for hemoglobin and serum level of hepcidin, ferritin, folate acid, soluble transferrin receptor, vitamin B12 and CRP. Deficiency of iron (p < 0.001), folate (p < 0.01) and their mixed deficiency (p < 0.001) significantly increased with increasing severity of anaemia and contributed to 48.7% mild anaemia and 66.9% moderate anaemia. Anaemia of inflammation contributed to 16.2% of mild anaemia and 11.7% of moderate anaemia. More than one third of mild anaemia is caused by other causes. Current iron and folic acid program can alleviate around more than 2/3rd moderate anaemia and around half of mild anaemia among adolescent girls. Unknown causes of anaemia need further investigation. Space travel exposes astronauts to several environmental challenges, including microgravity and radiation exposure. To overcome these stressors, the body undergoes various adaptations such as cardiovascular deconditioning, fluid shifts, metabolic changes, and alterations in the state of the bone marrow. Another area of concern is the potential impact of these adaptations on erythrocyte and haemoglobin concentrations, which can lead to what is commonly referred to as space anaemia or microgravity-induced anaemia. It is known that anaemia may result in impaired physical and cognitive performance, making early detection and management crucial for the health and wellbeing of astronauts during extended space missions. However, the effects and mechanisms of space anaemia are not fully understood, and research is underway to determine the extent to which it poses a challenge to astronauts. Further research is needed to clarify the long-term effects of microgravity on the circulatory system and to investigate possible solutions to address spaceflight-induced anaemia. This article reviews the potential link between spaceflight and anaemia, based on existing evidence from simulated studies (e.g., microgravity and radiation studies) and findings from spaceflight studies (e.g., International Space Station and space shuttle missions).
