Several studies have established an association between the blood group type and susceptibility to infections. This study aimed to evaluate a correlation between the blood group type and the susceptibility to infection. A total of 558 patients were enrolled in this study who attended at the Althawra Hospital, Ibb City, from March to August 2018. Blood samples were analyzed for complete blood count and blood group. We observed a high frequency of infections affecting the digestive system (26.4%), while the least affected system was the urogenital system 5.9%. Patients with A blood group exhibit an increased probability to be infected by viruses than they do for bacteria (odds ratio [OR] = 1.430; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.005 to 2.035; P = 0.05 and OR = 0.098; 95% CI = 0.064 to 0.148; P < 0.0001, respectively). It was observed that blood group A individuals were more susceptible to infection with hepatitis B virus than were the other groups (P = 0.041; OR = 1.704, 95% CI = 1.053-2.773). The liklihood of O blood group patients experiencing urogenital infections was less than that of non-O blood group patients one third (OR = 0.353, 95% CI = 0.158-0.789; P = 0.014). This study corroborates previous findings that demonstrated that certain blood groups are more prone to infection by one agent than are patients with other blood groups.

ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living kidney transplantation (KTx) is an established procedure to address the demand for kidney transplants with outcomes comparable to ABO-compatible KTx. Desensitization involves the use of immunoadsorption (IA) to eliminate preformed antibodies against the allograft. This monocentric retrospective study compares single-use antigen-selective Glycosorb ® ABO columns to reusable non-antigen-specific Immunosorba ® immunoglobulin adsorption columns regarding postoperative infectious complications and outcome. It includes all 138 ABOi KTx performed at Freiburg Transplant Center from 2004-2020. We compare 81 patients desensitized using antigen-specific columns (sIA) to 57 patients who received IA using non-antigen-specific columns (nsIA). We describe distribution of infections, mortality and allograft survival in both groups and use Cox proportional hazards regression to test for the association of IA type with severe infections. Desensitization with nsIA tripled the risk of severe postoperative infections (adjusted HR 3.08, 95% CI: 1.3-8.1) compared to sIA. nsIA was associated with significantly more recurring (21.4% vs. 6.2%) and severe infections (28.6% vs. 8.6%), mostly in the form of urosepsis. A significantly higher proportion of patients with sIA suffered from allograft rejection (29.6% vs. 14.0%). Passenger lymphocyte syndrome is an immunologic disorder observed in solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in which B lymphocytes within a donor graft are transferred to the recipient and subsequently produce circulating antibodies against host red blood cell antigens. The syndrome is most likely to occur in minor ABO blood group mismatched or Rh incompatible transplantation. Although generally mild and self-limited, the resulting haemolytic burden has the potential to increase the risk of infection, graft failure and death. The phenomenon is observed in the transplantation of any solid organ with lymphoid tissue, including the liver. We present a structured case report of passenger lymphocyte syndrome following minor ABO-mismatched liver transplantation, which was initially complicated by blood loss anaemia early in the postoperative period. Background: Administering platelets through a rapid infuser is proven to be safe. However, the clinical significance of infusing ABO-incompatible platelets with red blood cells (RBCs) in a rapid infuser remains unclear. There is a theoretical risk that isoagglutinin in the plasma of a platelet unit can interact with RBCs and induce hemolysis., Materials and Methods: Seven in vitro studies were performed including five cases (type A RBCs and type O platelets) and two controls (type A RBCs and platelets). Anti-A titers were measured in platelet units. An RBC unit and a platelet unit were mixed in the rapid infuser reservoir and incubated for 30 min. The primary outcome was the presence of hemolysis based on the following parameters: free hemoglobin concentration, hemolysis check, direct antiglobulin test (DAT), and direct agglutination., Results: The post-mix DAT was positive for IgG in all test samples (5/5), and weakly positive for complement in 3/5. The changes in free Hb in test cases between measured and calculated post-mix spanned -2.2 to +3.4 mg/dL. Post-mix hemolysis check was negative in 3/5 and slightly positive in 2/5 cases, with no significant differences compared to the control case. Anti-A titers ranged from 16 to 512 and were not associated with hemolysis. All samples were negative for direct agglutination., Conclusion: Our study suggested that mixing ABO-incompatible platelets with RBCs in a rapid infuser does not induce in vitro hemolysis. Background: Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with ABO major incompatibility is characterized by transfusion dependent anemia. No standard treatment existed for PRCA following allo-HSCT yet., Study Design and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study, and reported our experience with the use of avatrombopag and lower dose rituximab to treat five patients with PRCA subsequent to major ABO-incompatible allo-HSCT., Results: Five cases of PRCA were identified from 72 patients who underwent allo-HSCT with major or bidirectional ABO mismatch. Cumulative incidence at Day +60 was 6.9% (5/72) at our center. All donor and recipient blood groups were A +  and O + , respectively. In the first three cases we reported, patients received erythropoietin, plasma exchange, and donor lymphocyte infusion, but none of them had any effect. After 4 weeks of treatment with low dose rituximab (100 mg/week) combined with avatrombopag (40 mg/day), favorable outcomes were obtained. According to the aforementioned experience, Cases 4 and 5 were administered low-dose rituximab and avatrombopag in 3 months after transplantation, and erythroid response was observed on 3 weeks after treatment. Our patients tolerated low-dose rituximab and avatrombopag well and experienced rapid efficacy, with a median duration of 3 weeks. Furthermore, no severe infection or thrombocytosis necessitated a dose adjustment., Conclusion: Low-dose rituximab and avatrombopag may be an effective treatment for patients with PRCA after major ABO-incompatible allo-HSCT. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) pose a serious threat to people's health, with extremely high global morbidity, mortality, and disability rates. This study aimed to review the literature that examined the relationship between blood groups and CVD. Many studies have reported that non-O blood groups are associated with an increased risk and severity of coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. Non-O blood groups increase the risk and severity of these conditions by increasing von Willebrand factor and plasma cholesterol levels and inducing endothelial dysfunction and inflammation. They have also been linked with increased coronary artery calcification, coronary lesion complexity, and poor collateral circulation. Blood groups also affect the prognosis of coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome and can alter the rate of complications and mortality. Several cardiovascular complications have been described for coronavirus disease 2019, and blood groups can influence their occurrence. No studies have found a significant relationship between the Lewis blood group and CVD. Background: Whole blood transfusion is associated with benefits including improved survival, coagulopathy, and decreased transfusion requirements. The majority of whole blood transfusion is in the form of low-titer O-positive whole blood (LTOWB). Practice at many trauma centers withholds the use of LTOWB in women of childbearing potential due to concerns of alloimmunization. The purpose of this article is to review the evidence for LTOWB transfusion in female trauma patients and generate guidelines for its application., Study Design: Literature and evidence for LTOWB transfusion in hemorrhagic shock are reviewed. The rates of alloimmunization and subsequent obstetrical outcomes are compared to the reported outcomes of LTOWB vs other resuscitation media. Literature regarding patient experiences and preferences in regards to the risk of alloimmunization is compared to current trauma practices., Results: LTOWB has shown improved outcomes in both military and civilian settings. The overall risk of alloimmunization for Rhesus factor (Rh) - female patients in hemorrhagic shock exposed to Rh + blood is low (3% to 20%). Fetal outcomes in Rh-sensitized patients are excellent compared to historical standards, and treatment options continue to expand. The majority of female patients surveyed on the risk of alloimmunization favor receiving Rh + blood products to improve trauma outcomes. Obstetrical transfusion practices have incorporated LTOWB with excellent results., Conclusions: The use of whole blood resuscitation in trauma is associated with benefits in the resuscitation of severely injured patients. The rate at which severely injured, Rh-negative patients develop anti-D antibodies is low. Treatments for alloimmunized pregnancies have advanced, with excellent results. Fears of alloimmunization in female patients are likely overstated and may not warrant the withholding of whole blood resuscitation. Despite significant global morbidity associated with respiratory infection, there is a paucity of data examining the association between severity of non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory infection and blood group. We analysed a prospective cohort of adults hospitalised in Bristol, UK, from 1 August 2020 to 31 July 2022, including patients with acute respiratory infection (pneumonia [n = 1934] and non-pneumonic lower respiratory tract infection [NP-LRTI] [n = 1184]), a negative SARS-CoV-2 test and known blood group status. The likelihood of cardiovascular complication, survival and hospital admission length was assessed using regression models with group O and RhD-negative status as reference groups. Group A and RhD-positive were over-represented in both pneumonia and NP-LRTI compared to a first-time donor population (p < 0.05 in all); contrastingly, group O was under-represented. ABO group did not influence cardiovascular complication risk; however, RhD-positive patients with pneumonia had a reduced odds ratio (OR) for cardiovascular complications (OR = 0.77 [95% CI = 0.59-0.98]). Compared to group O, group A individuals with NP-LRTI were more likely to be discharged within 60 days (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.17 [95% CI = 1.03-1.33]), while group B with pneumonia was less likely (HR = 0.8 [95% CI = 0.66-0.96]). This analysis provides some evidence that blood group status may influence clinical outcome following respiratory infection, with group A having increased risk of hospitalisation and RhD-positive patients having reduced cardiovascular complications., (© 2023 The Authors. BACKGROUND The use of ABO-incompatible liver transplants (ABO-ILTs) from deceased donors has become more common due to the shortage of available donor livers and increased transplant waiting times. This retrospective study from a national transplant center at Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of ABO-incompatible deceased donor pediatric liver transplants between 1987 and 2022. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixteen (9.5%) of the 169 pediatric liver transplantations were ABO-ILTs. The median age at transplantation was 5.0 (0.5-15.4) years. Reasons for ABO-ILTs were acute liver failure (18.75%), malignancy (12.5%), small body size and long waiting time (25%), and other reasons (43.75%). The median post-transplant follow-up time was 147 (0.72-353) months. Patient and graft survival and occurrence of surgical complications were compared to ABO-identical transplants, and anti-ABO antibody titers were analyzed. RESULTS The 1-, 3-, and 5-year patient survivals were comparable between the ABO-I and ABO-compatible groups, being 81.3%, 73.9%, and 73.9% (ABO-I) and 87.5%, 82.5%, 77.9% (ABO-compatible), respectively. Three patients with ABO-ILTs died of sepsis and multiorgan failure during the first 3 months after transplantation. The occurrence of biliary complications and early vascular thrombosis (<30 days after transplantation) did not differ significantly between recipients with an ABO-ILT vs ABO-compatible liver graft. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study support findings from previous studies that outcomes after ABO-incompatible liver transplants in children were comparable to outcomes from ABO-identical liver transplants.

Therapeutic apheresis (TA) plays a significant role in various aspects of renal transplantation. It has been a necessary preconditioning component in ABO incompatible kidney transplants and an important modality in the removal of anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies both in the context of desensitization protocols that have been developed to allow highly sensitized kidney transplant candidates to be successfully transplanted and as treatment of antibody mediated rejection episodes post transplantation. In addition, TA has been used with various results for the management of recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Background: There is no robust evidence-based data for ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOiKT) from emerging countries., Methods: Data from 1759 living donor ABOiKT and 33 157 ABO-compatible kidney transplantations (ABOcKT) performed in India between March 5, 2011, and July 2, 2022, were included in this retrospective, multicenter (n = 25) study. The primary outcomes included management protocols, mortality, graft loss, and biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR)., Results: Protocol included rituximab 100 (232 [13.18%]), 200 (877 [49.85%]), and 500 mg (569 [32.34%]); immunoadsorption (IA) (145 [8.24%]), IVIG (663 [37.69%]), and no induction 200 (11.37%). Mortality, graft loss, and BPAR were reported in 167 (9.49%), 136 (7.73%), and 228 (12.96%) patients, respectively, over a median follow-up of 36.3 mo. In cox proportional hazard model, mortality was higher with IA (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.53 [1.62-3.97]; P  < 0.001), BPAR (HR: 1.83 [1.25-2.69]; P  = 0.0020), and graft loss (HR: 1.66 [1.05-2.64]; P  = 0.0310); improved graft survival was associated with IVIG (HR: 0.44 [0.26-0.72]; P  = 0.0010); higher BPAR was reported with conventional tube method (HR: 3.22 [1.9-5.46]; P  < 0.0001) and IA use (HR: 2 [1.37-2.92]; P  < 0.0001), whereas lower BPAR was reported in the prepandemic era (HR: 0.61 [0.43-0.88]; P  = 0.008). Primary outcomes were not associated with rituximab dosing or high preconditioning/presurgery anti-A/anti-B titers. Incidence of overall infection 306 (17.39%), cytomegalovirus 66 (3.75%), and BK virus polyoma virus 20 (1.13%) was low. Background: Living donor (LD) kidney transplantation in the setting of ABO blood group incompatibility (ABOi) has been previously reported to be associated with increased risk for antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR). It is however unclear if the presence of pre-transplant donor specific antibodies (DSA) works as an additive risk factor in the setting of ABOi and if DSA positive ABOi transplants have a significantly worse long-term outcome as compared with ABO compatible (ABOc) DSA positive transplants., Methods: We investigated the effect of pre-transplant DSA in the ABOi and ABOc setting on the risk of antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) and graft loss in a cohort of 952 LD kidney transplants., Results: We found a higher incidence of ABMR in ABOi transplants as compared to ABOc transplants but this did not significantly affect graft survival or overall survival which was similar in both groups. The presence of pre-transplant DSA was associated with a significantly increased risk of ABMR and graft loss both in the ABOi and ABOc setting. We could not detect an additional risk of DSA in the ABOi setting and outcomes were comparable between DSA positive ABOi and ABOc recipients. Furthermore, a combination of DSA directed at both Class I and Class II, as well as DSA with a high mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) showed the strongest relation to ABMR development and graft loss., Conclusion: The presence of pre-transplant DSA was associated with a significantly worse long-term outcome in both ABOi and ABOc LD kidney transplants and our results suggests that the risk associated with pre-transplant DSA is perhaps not augmented in the ABOi setting. Background and Objectives: ABO-incompatible transplantations allow patients to receive timely transplants. Isoagglutinin titration to ascertain levels of incompatible antibodies in the recipient is important in determining patient selection and transplant survivability. To find out the prevalent trends in India, the largest, first of its kind survey was carried out among the transplant centers regarding their practices in isoagglutinin titration., Methods: The survey was drafted by a working group of Transfusion and Transplant Immunology specialists from six different centers. Data was obtained via the use of an online questionnaire., Results: Results were categorized into four categories, Hospital information, Titration methodology, Role of transfusion specialists and cut-off titers. Most centers had a well-established solid-organ transplant program with considerable number of ABO-incompatible transplantations. Most centers performed isoagglutinin titration in Transfusion Medicine department. Column Agglutination Technique (CAT) was the most common method, using EDTA blood samples and freshly-prepared in-house pooled cells. Most centers had a turn-around time of less than 12 h. While the policy for ascertaining baseline and threshold titers is well-defined in ABO-incompatible renal transplants, variations from center to center still exist for ABO-incompatible liver transplants. Most centers required a Transfusion Medicine consultation for the patients before such transplants., Conclusion: With increasing ABO-incompatible kidney and liver transplants across the country, the role of Transfusion medicine specialists has become vital in pre-conditioning regimes enabling the viability and success of such transplants. Objective: The present study investigated the effect of blood group on cochlear function in a large participant sample across different age groups. The study hypothesis was that participants with blood group O would show relatively reduced cochlear function as reflected in otoacoustic emission (OAE) measures., Design: Data were collected from transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), DPOAE input/output (I/O) function, and spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings., Study Sample: Four hundred and sixty-three normal hearing adults aged 20-59 years among the four ABO blood groups participated in the study., Results: TEOAE and DPOAE amplitudes did not reveal significant differences for participants with blood group O compared with participants with non-O blood groups. No significant differences in I/O function categories were found among participants with different blood groups. SOAE prevalence was also not significantly different across blood groups. However, previously reported age and gender differences for OAE variables were confirmed., Conclusions: Participants with blood group O were not found to have significantly reduced cochlear function, based on OAE measures. Results from the current study do not support the hypothesis that normal hearing individuals with different ABO blood groups differ in level of cochlear function.

Background: Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) results in the decreased lifespan of the red cells. HDN related to ABO incompatibility is mostly unnoticed because routine screening is not being done. This study was done to assess the prevalence of ABO-HDN and to compare different immunohematological tests. Methods-In this study 213 O group mothers and the 122 ABO-incompatible newborns born to them were included. Quantifying the maternal IgG anti-A/anti-B antibody titer was done by Conventional Tube Technique (CTT) using Dithiothreitol (DTT) pretreated maternal serum. Hemolysin test was performed on the mothers having titer > 256. These cases were followed up and, after delivery, were monitored for ABO HDN, along with direct antiglobulin testing and elution studies. The prevalence of ABO-HDN was calculated, and the different diagnostic parameters of the tests were calculated. Results- The prevalence of ABO-HDN in our population was estimated to be 1.7%, 6.1% & 10.6% in our population, O group mothers, and O group mothers with ABOincompatible newborns, respectively. Maternal titer≥ 512 strongly correlated with ABOHDN. DAT positivity is a good predictor of ABO-HDN, especially using sensitive techniques. Maternal IgG titers have the highest sensitivity & Negative Predictive Value, while DAT has the highest specificity & Positive Predictive Value. Conclusion - Maternal ABO antibody titration may be advocated in the centers to identify high-risk groups. It can advocate institutional delivery and dedicated follow-up of newborns with ABO-HDN. Introduction: Simple plasma exchange (PE) with fresh-frozen plasma replacement allows antibody removal for ABO-incompatible living donor kidney transplantation, but is associated with a high incidence of allergic reactions. We developed, implemented, and evaluated a protocol for safe preoperative PE., Methods: The protocol comprised pretreatment (125 mg methylprednisolone infusion, 400 mg acetaminophen and 30 mg diphenhydramine orally) with a replacement fluid rate < 20 mL/min. Allergic reaction incidence was investigated in controls who underwent ABO-incompatible living donor kidney transplantation between 2016 and March 2020 (group C) and patients who underwent the protocol and procedure between April 2020 and February 2023 (group N)., Results: Ten (group C) and 19 (group N) patients performed 11 and 30 sessions of PE, respectively. Allergic reactions occurred in 81.8% and 36.7% (p = 0.014), respectively, with an odds ratio of the protocol was 0.056 (95% CI 0.0059-0.5380, P = 0.013)., Conclusion: Our protocol resulted in a significantly lower incidence of allergic reactions., (© 2023 International Society for Apheresis and Japanese Society for Apheresis.)

Objectives: To determine whether blood group influences development of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) after administration of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) AstraZeneca ChAdOx1-S vaccine., Design: A case-control study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the association between blood type and COVID-19 vaccination status., Setting: Vaccinated and unvaccinated patients recruited from the international Bio-Repository to Establish the Aetiology of Sinovenous Thrombosis study and the Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Study Group., Participants: All patients were of European descent and age and sex matched. Cases ( n  = 82) were patients ≥18 years old who suffered a CVT within 28 days of a first dose of ChAdOx1-S vaccine. Controls ( n  = 441) were unvaccinated CVT patients ≥18 years old. All patients were of European descent., Main Outcome Measures: Frequency of blood type and ABO allele distribution by vaccination status., Results: Blood group O was found to be more prevalent among CVT patients with vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT-CVT) after ChAdOx1-S vaccination compared with unvaccinated CVT cases (43% vs. 17%, respectively, p  < 0.001). Blood group A was less prevalent, though still high, in the vaccinated group compared with the unvaccinated group (47% vs. 71%, respectively, p  < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the VITT-CVT non-ChAdOx1-S vaccine group and unvaccinated pre-COVID-19 CVT group for blood group., Conclusions: Blood group O is more prevalent among patients with VITT-CVT after ChAdOx1-S vaccination compared with unvaccinated cases, independent of well-established CVT risk factors. A larger dataset may be able to determine whether those of blood groups B and/or AB may be safely vaccinated with the low cost, readily available and easily transported ChAdOx1-S rather than adopting a complete ban.

BackgroundSubjects with non-O ABO blood group alleles have increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Glycosyltransferase activity is greater for the A(1) versus A(2) variant, whereas O01 and O02 variants are nonfunctioning. We hypothesized: 1) A(1) allele would confer greater risk than A(2) allele, 2) protective effect of the O allele would be equivalent for O01 and O02 variants, 3) secretor phenotype would modify the association with risk.MethodsWe determined ABO variants and secretor phenotype from single nucleotide polymorphisms in ABO and FUT2 genes in 1,533 cases and 1,582 controls from 12 prospective cohort studies. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) for pancreatic cancer were calculated using logistic regression.ResultsAn increased risk was observed in participants with A(1) but not A(2) alleles. Compared with subjects with genotype O/O, genotypes A(2)/O, A(2)/A(1), A(1)/O, and A(1)/A(1) had ORs of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.72-1.26), 1.46 (95% CI, 0.98-2.17), 1.48 (95% CI, 1.23-1.78), and 1.71 (95% CI, 1.18-2.47). Risk was similar for O01 and O02 variant O alleles. Compared with O01/O01, the ORs for each additional allele of O02, A(1), and A(2) were 1.00 (95% CI, 0.87-1.14), 1.38 (95% CI, 1.20-1.58), and 0.96 (95% CI, 0.77-1.20); P, O01 versus O02 = 0.94, A(1) versus A(2) = 0.004. Secretor phenotype was not an effect modifier (P-interaction = 0.63).ConclusionsAmong participants in a large prospective cohort consortium, ABO allele subtypes corresponding to increased glycosyltransferase activity were associated with increased pancreatic cancer risk.ImpactThese data support the hypothesis that ABO glycosyltransferase activity influences pancreatic cancer risk rather than actions of other nearby genes on chromosome 9q34.

A recent genome-wide association study (PanScan) identified significant associations at the ABO gene locus with risk of pancreatic cancer, but the influence of specific ABO genotypes remains unknown. We determined ABO genotypes (OO, AO, AA, AB, BO, and BB) in 1,534 cases and 1,583 controls from 12 prospective cohorts in PanScan, grouping participants by genotype-derived serologic blood type (O, A, AB, and B). Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for pancreatic cancer by ABO alleles were calculated using logistic regression. Compared with blood type O, the ORs for pancreatic cancer in subjects with types A, AB, and B were 1.38 [95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.18-1.62], 1.47 (95% CI, 1.07-2.02), and 1.53 (95% CI, 1.21-1.92), respectively. The incidence rates for blood types O, A, AB, and B were 28.9, 39.9, 41.8, and 44.5 cases per 100,000 subjects per year. An increase in risk was noted with the addition of each non-O allele. Compared with OO genotype, subjects with AO and AA genotype had ORs of 1.33 (95% CI, 1.13-1.58) and 1.61 (95% CI, 1.22-2.18), whereas subjects with BO and BB genotypes had ORs of 1.45 (95% CI, 1.14-1.85) and 2.42 (1.28-4.57). The population attributable fraction for non-O blood type was 19.5%. In a joint model with smoking, current smokers with non-O blood type had an adjusted OR of 2.68 (95% CI, 2.03-3.54) compared with nonsmokers of blood type O. We concluded that ABO genotypes were significantly associated with pancreatic cancer risk.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between primary femoral head necrosis (ONFH) and an ABO blood group. Methods: This study was a retrospective case–control trial. An analysis of the clinical data of an ABO blood group with 516 patients (case group) with ONFH and 489 limb‐fracture patients (control group) without previous hip pain was obtained from the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from November 2015 to November 2018. The clinical data included gender, age, height, weight, a history of smoking, alcohol abuse, prior medical history, hormone use, and ABO blood type. A logistic regression model was used for univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: From November 2015 to November 2018, there were 267 males and 249 females in the 516 cases of ONFH in the case group. The control group included 289 males and 200 females. In terms of age, the average age of the case group was significantly lower than that of the control group. In terms of body mass index (BMI), the BMI of the case group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). From the previous medical history of patients in the two groups (coronary heart disease, hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and peripheral vascular disease), there was no significant difference between the two groups from a statistical perspective (P < 0.05). However, according to the risk factors of ONFH (smoking, alcohol abuse, hyperlipidemia, and hormone‐use history), there were significant differences between the case group and the control group. There was no statistical difference in the quantitative distribution ratio of the four blood types – A, B, O, and AB – between the case group and the control group. The outcomes of logistic multiple regression analysis presented that there was no significant correlation between the occurrence of ONFH and blood type A, B, AB, and O (P > 0.05). However, there are significant differences in the disease progression between the different blood types. There was a significant difference in the progression of disease between type A and type O. Among them, patients with ONFH and type A blood had the fastest progression with an average of 2.318 years, and the slowest progression was found in type O blood with an average of 5.15 years. Schistosomiasis or bilharzia is a widespread parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Some factors have been investigated previously regarding their effect on the pathophysiological mechanism of human schistosomiasis, but the possible influence of the ABO blood group on the severity of Schistosoma infection has been the most promising. Hence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to further investigate the association of the ABO blood group with schistosomiasis susceptibility. Selected publications were retrieved from PubMed up to 21 August 2018, for related studies written in English. Number of cases (with schistosomiasis) and controls (without schistosomiasis) were extracted across all ABO blood types. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed, pooled and interpreted. Subgroup analysis by the species of Schistosoma infecting the population and the participants' ethnicity was also performed. The overall analysis revealed heterogeneity in the outcomes, which warranted the identification of the cause using the Galbraith plot. Post-outlier outcomes of the pooled ORs show that individuals who are not blood type O are more susceptible (OR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.17–1.67; PA < 0.001) to schistosomiasis than those who are blood type O (OR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.60–0.85; PA < 0.001). Subgroup analysis yielded the same observations regardless of the species of schistosome and the ethnicity of the participants. Results of this meta-analysis suggest that individuals who are blood type B and A are more susceptible to schistosomiasis than those who are blood type O. Background: Blood group of an individual is commonly determined by ABO & Rh status. The objectives of the study were to determine the frequency of ABO, Rh and ABO-Rh blood groups in students of Gomal Medical College, D.I.Khan, Pakistan. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Community Medicine, Gomal Medical College, D.I.Khan, Pakistan from April 1 to May 23, 2019. The population being accessible was taken as sample. Sample size was 452. Our research variables (attributes) were ABO (A, B, AB, O), Rh (positive and negative) and ABO-Rh (A+, B+, AB+ O+, A-, B-, AB-, O-) respectively. All variables being nominal were described by count and percentage. The estimated parameters were given as confidence interval for proportion at 95% confidence level. The observed frequency of ABO, Rh and ABO-Rh blood groups was tested against their expected frequency using chi-square goodness of fit test. Results: Out of 452 students, the frequency of ABO blood group was; A 127 (28.12%), B 165 (36.53%), AB 57 (12.62%) & O 103 (22.73%); Rh blood group was; Rh+ 408 (90.33%) & Rh- 44 (9.67%) and ABO-Rh was; A+ 116 (25.60%), B+ 148 (32.05%), AB+ 50 (11.30%), O+ 91 (20.10%), A- 11 (2.40%), B- 17 (03.70%), AB- 7 (1.50%) & O- 12 (2.60%). The observed frequency of ABO & ABO-Rh blood groups was significantly different whereas of Rh blood group was similar to expected prevalence. Conclusion: In our population, most common blood group was B+ and the least common was AB-. The observed frequency of ABO & ABO-Rh blood groups was different while of Rh was same as expected. We conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study of pancreatic cancer, a cancer with one of the lowest survival rates worldwide. We genotyped 558,542 SNPs in 1,896 individuals with pancreatic cancer and 1,939 controls drawn from 12 prospective cohorts plus one hospital-based case-control study. We conducted a combined analysis of these groups plus an additional 2,457 affected individuals and 2,654 controls from eight case-control studies, adjusting for study, sex, ancestry and five principal components. We identified an association between a locus on 9q34 and pancreatic cancer marked by the SNP rs505922 (combined P = 5.37 x 10(-8); multiplicative per-allele odds ratio 1.20; 95% confidence interval 1.12-1.28). This SNP maps to the first intron of the ABO blood group gene. Our results are consistent with earlier epidemiologic evidence suggesting that people with blood group O may have a lower risk of pancreatic cancer than those with groups A or B.

Various cells from humans and animals have been established as cell lines, and their features, characteristics, and origins have been reported. Many laboratories use cell lines as model cells, which are selected to suit research purposes. We attempted to identify the ABO genotypes of 31 human leukemia and lymphoma cell lines stored in our laboratory using three methods: the PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA), PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and the direct DNA sequencing of PCR products. We distinguished 31 human leukemia and lymphoma cell lines examined into six major ABO genotypes: A/O (A101/O01 : n = 1, A101/O12 : n = 4, A101/O26 : n = 1, A101/O49 : n = 1, A102/O01 : n = 3) , A/A (A101/A101 : n = 1, A102/A102 : n = 2), B/O (Bw29/O01 : n = 1), B/B (B101/B101 : n = 2), O/O (O01/O01 : n = 9, O01/O02 : n = 1, O01/O26 : n = 1, O02/O03 : n = 1), and A/B (A102/B101 : n = 3). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify the ABO genotypes of various cell lines. The ABO genotypes of cell lines are important when selecting an experimental model cell for an ABO blood group study, and are essential information for cell lines. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected millions of people globally. Many recent studies have suggested that the ABO blood type may contribute to COVID-19 infection immunopathogenesis. We aimed to determine the proportional distribution of COVID-19 infection among ABO blood types., Methodology: This retrospective research was conducted in the city of Jodhpur (Rajasthan), India. The research involved 1140 COVID-19 patients, whose medical records were available in blood banks. The data was evaluated statistically using IBM SPSS 26., Results: The proportion of blood group B among infected patients was highest (37.36%). Among all the cases, blood group A had the highest odds ratio of 1.062 (CI 95%, 0.92-1.21, p = 0.412). All versus one blood group analysis also showed that blood group A (odds ratio = 1.062 [CI 95%, 0.92-1.22] p = 0.412) was more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than the remaining blood groups. In the year 2021, blood group B had the highest risk of COVID-19 infection (odds ratio = 1.138)., Conclusions: Based on our findings, the blood groups A and B are more likely to be infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The overall average age for COVID-19 infection was lower, and the number of incidences in female patients was higher in 2021, relative to 2020. We found no evident relationship between COVID-19 vulnerabilities and blood group. Background: The administration of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a standard treatment for the management of Kawasaki disease (KD). IVIG is known to be a highly effective and safe treatment., Case Presentation: We report the development of hemolytic anemia in seven children receiving repeated doses of IVIG. The children were aged 3-44 months and included 4 girls and 3 boys. All children received 10% IVIG and a second course of immunoglobulin because they did not respond to the first course of immunoglobulin. Two received high-dose aspirin (50 mg/kg), and five received low-dose aspirin (5 mg/kg). Two patients required additional methylprednisolone pulse therapy (30 mg/kg) after the second dose of immunoglobulin, and three patients received oral prednisolone therapy for defervescence. Three patients showed coronary artery dilation during hospitalization and normalized within two months. Pretreatment hemoglobin averaged 11.3-14.2 g/dL, and post-hemolytic anemia hemoglobin ranged from 7.4 to 9.6 g/dL, with a difference of 1.7-6.8 g/dL. Reticulocytes were increased to 3.3-13.2%. Peripheral blood smears showed normochromic normocytic anemia, and anisopoikilocytosis. All children were positive for warm-type antibodies with IgG+, C3d- in direct antiglobulin test, and the blood group was A + in five and B + in two. None of the patients received immunomodulatory therapy or red blood cell transfusions. They were followed for a year and all recovered., Conclusion: Especially, in non-O blood group KD patients who are refractory to initial IVIG and require a second dose of IVIG or 10% formulation the possibility of immune hemolytic anemia should be carefully considered, and close follow-up should be maintained after therapy., (© 2024. Background: Previous studies have reported that the susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is related to ABO blood group, but the relationship with Rh phenotype and MN blood group is unknown. China had adopted a strict control policy on COVID-19 until December 5, 2022, when local communities were liberalized. Therefore, we aimed to explore the correlation between ABO blood group, Rh phenotype, MN blood group and susceptibility to COVID-19 based on the time sequence of infection during the pandemic., Methods: A total of 870 patients who were routinely hospitalized in Ningbo Medical Center Lihuili Hospital from March 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023 were randomly selected to enroll in this study. Patients were divided into susceptible group and non-susceptible group, according to the time of their previous infection. The demographics and clinical information of the enrolled participants were collected from electronic medical records. The association of ABO blood group, Rh phenotype and MN blood group with susceptibility to COVID-19 was analyzed., Results: A total of 650 cases (74.7%) had been infected with COVID-19, with 157 cases (18.0%) in the second week and 252 cases (29.0%) in the third week, reaching the peak of infection. Compared with the non-susceptible group, the susceptible group had no statistically significant differences in ABO blood group and Rh phenotype, but the proportion of N+ was higher (75.6% vs 68.9%, P = 0.030) and the proportion of MM was lower (24.4% vs 31.1%, P = 0.030). Consistent with this, ABO blood group and Rh phenotype were not significantly associated with susceptibility to COVID-19 (P>0.05), while N+ and MM were associated with susceptibility to COVID-19 (OR: 1.432, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.049, 1.954, P = 0.024; OR: 0.698, 95% CI: 0.512, 0.953, P = 0.024, respectively), after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, basic disease, and vaccination status in multivariate logistic regression analysis., Conclusion: Our study showed that ABO blood group and Rh phenotype may not be related to the susceptibility to COVID-19, but MN blood group may be associated with the susceptibility to COVID-19., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Lu et al. Deep sequencing by NGS of targeted amplicons can identify rare genetic variants in a pool of DNA where the vast majority of genomic DNA does not contain the variant. This approach can be used to detect a previously described paternally inherited, fetal variant in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal plasma. This is useful in cases where risk for the fetus is contingent upon inheritance of a paternal variant that the woman does not have. Both pathogenic and non-pathogenic variants that the woman does not have can be detected. In cases of compound heterozygosity, presence of the paternal pathogenic variant also requires detection of the maternal variant for risk assessment, which requires a chorion villus biopsy.We have used this approach to focus on detection of fetal blood groups in cases of presence of maternal alloantibodies against blood group antigens in pregnancy, to predict whether the fetus has inherited a blood group antigen that is targeted by the alloantibodies. In cases of maternal alloantibodies against blood group antigens, the fetus is at risk of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). With a known specificity of the maternal antibodies and if the fetal blood group can be determined in the pregnancy, then it can be ascertained if the fetus is at risk of HDFN and rational pregnancy care can be instituted. A noninvasive procedure avoids risks for the fetus. We have reported a procedure based on NGS analysis of PCR amplified cfDNA from maternal plasma. Some fetuses may die as early as week 18. We use this approach to predict fetal K, k, RhC, Rhc, RhE, and ABO blood groups in cases with a risk of HDFN due to the corresponding maternally produced antibodies.The NGS-based analysis can predict the presence or absence of incompatible antigens on the fetal RBCs.In this chapter, a noninvasive method for predicting some fetal blood groups early in pregnancy is described. Naturally occurring glycans are often found in a multivalent presentation. Cell surface receptors that recognize these displays may form clusters, which can lead to signalling or endocytosis. One of the challenges in generating synthetic displays of multivalent carbohydrates is providing high valency as well as access to heterofunctional conjugates to allow attachment of multiple antigens or payloads. We designed a strategy based on a set of bifunctional linkers to generate a heterobifunctional multivalent display of two carbohydrate antigens to bind BCR and CD22 with four and twelve antigen copies, respectively. We confirmed that the conjugates were able to engage both CD22 and BCR on cells by observing receptor clustering. Introduction: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is considered only for patients who do not have an ABO-compatible (ABOc) LD. Therefore, a clinically practical question is whether to proceed with ABOi LDKT or remain on dialysis while waiting for ABOc deceased donor kidney transplantation (DDKT). However, this issue has not been addressed in Asian countries, where ABOi LDKT programs are more active than DDKT programs., Methods: A total of 426 patients underwent ABOi-LDKT between 2010 and 2020 at Seoul National University Hospital and Severance Hospital, Korea. We compared outcomes between the ABOi-LDKT and the propensity-matched control groups (waiting-list-only group, n = 1,278; waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group, n = 1,278)., Results: The ABOi-LDKT group showed a significantly better patient survival rate than the waiting-list-only group (p = 0.001) and the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group (p = 0.048). When the ABOi-LDKT group was categorized into a high-titer group (peak anti-ABO titer ≥1:128) and a low-titer group (peak anti-ABO titer ≤1:64), the low-titer group showed better patient survival rates than those of the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group (p = 0.046) or the waiting-list-only group (p = 0.004). In contrast, the high-titer ABOi-LDKT group showed no significant benefit in patient survival compared to the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group. Background: In newborns with hemolysis, the direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) play a key role in demonstrating the presence of an immune cause. We aimed to emphasize the importance of IAT in mothers of DAT-positive babies., Methods: DAT was performed with forward blood grouping on cord blood in term babies who were born between September 2020 and September 2022. IAT was performed in the mothers of the babies who were found to have a positive DAT and antibody identification was performed in the mothers who were found to have a positive IAT. Specific antibodies detected and identified were associated with the clinical course., Results: The study included 2769 babies and their mothers. The prevalence of DAT positivity was found to be 3.3% (87 of 2661). In DAT-positive babies, the rate of ABO incompatibility was 45.9%, the rate of RhD incompatibility was 5.7% and the rate of RhD and ABO incompatibility in association was 10.3%. The rate of subgroup incompatibility and other red blood cell antibodies was 18.3%. Phototherapy was applied because of indirect hyperbilirubinemia in 16.6% of the DAT-negative babies and in 51.5% of the DAT-positive babies. The need for phototherapy was significantly higher in DAT-positive infants (p < 0.01). Severe hemolytic disease of the newborn, bilirubin level, duration of phototherapy and use of intravenous immunoglobulin were found to be significantly higher in the babies whose mothers were IAT positive compared with the babies whose mothers were IAT negative (p < 0.01)., Conclusions: IAT should be performed on all pregnant women. When screening with IAT is not performed during pregnancy, performing DAT in the baby plays a key role. Background: Low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) or component therapy (CT) may be used to resuscitate hemorrhaging trauma patients. LTOWB may have clinical and logistical benefits and may improve survival., Objectives: We hypothesized LTOWB would improve 24-hour survival in hemorrhaging patients and would be safe and equally efficacious in non-group O compared with group O patients., Methods: Adult trauma patients with massive transfusion protocol activations were enrolled in this observational study. The primary outcome was 24-hour mortality. Secondary outcomes included 72-hour total blood product use. A Cox regression determined the independent associations with 24-hour mortality., Results: In total, 348 patients were included (CT, n = 180; LTOWB, n = 168). Demographics were similar between cohorts. Unadjusted 24-hour mortality was reduced in LTOWB vs CT: 8% vs 19% (P = .003), but 6-hour and 28-day mortality were similar. In an adjusted analysis with multivariable Cox regression, LTOWB was independently associated with reduced 24-hour mortality (hazard ratio, 0.21; 95% CI, 0.07-0.67; P = .004). LTOWB patients received significantly less 72-hour total blood products (80.9 [41.6-139.3] mL/kg vs 48.9 [25.9-106.9] mL/kg; P < .001). In stratified 24-hour survival analyses, LTOWB was associated with improved survival for patients in shock or with coagulopathy. LTOWB use in non-group O patients was not associated with increased mortality, organ injury, or adverse events., Conclusion: In this hypothesis-generating study, LTOWB use was independently associated with improved 24-hour survival, predominantly in patients with shock or coagulopathy. Introduction: This study investigated how non-O blood groups relate to thrombus burden (TB) and prognosis in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, aiming to shed light on their association with thrombotic complications in cardiovascular diseases., Methods: Retrospectively, 1,180 STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention were included. The study population was divided into groups according to TB status and the groups were compared in terms of basic clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters and ABO blood group types. In addition, short-term (30 days) and long-term (12 months) clinical outcomes were assessed to evaluate the prognostic implications., Results: The analysis revealed a significant association between non-O blood groups and increased TB in STEMI patients (p = 0.001). Non-O blood group was independently associated with high TB (OR: 1.726, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.279-2.330, p &lt; 0.001). Additionally, patients with non-O blood groups had higher short and long-term mortality rates (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.480, 95% CI: 1.361-4.520, p = 0.003; HR: 2.347, 95% CI: 1.433-3.844, p = 0.001; respectively)., Conclusions: This study emphasizes the significance of the ABO blood group system in STEMI outcomes, associating non-O blood groups with higher TB and poorer clinical outcomes. While proposing personalized treatment strategies based on blood group status to improve reperfusion interventions and outcomes, additional trials are needed to comprehensively evaluate their impact., (© 2024 The Author(s).
