Prayer is an important aspect of many religions. Existing measures of prayer have mostly originated from the Christian West and emphasized various verbal aspects of making a supplication. An active aspect of prayer, in which the supplicants strive for what they pray, has not received sufficient attention despite being crucial to Muslim belief. Based on the Islamic scholar Said Nursi's conceptualization, the current study developed and validated a 7-item, 2-factor measure of Muslim Verbal and Active Prayer (MVAP). The measure showed good construct validity in two independent Muslim samples (N = 297 and 179) in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. It demonstrated not only convergent validity, but showed incremental validity predicting religious and psychological adjustment over and above Muslim religiosity and spirituality. In addition, the Muslim prayers invigorated and integrated Muslim religious spirituality in its expression of religious and psychological adjustment. Tumours often contain B cells and plasma cells but the antigen specificity of these intratumoral B cells is not well understood1-8. Here we show that human papillomavirus (HPV)-specific B cell responses are detectable in samples from patients with HPV-positive head and neck cancers, with active production of HPV-specific IgG antibodies in situ. HPV-specific antibody secreting cells (ASCs) were present in the tumour microenvironment, with minimal bystander recruitment of influenza-specific cells, suggesting a localized and antigen-specific ASC response. HPV-specific ASC responses correlated with titres of plasma IgG and were directed against the HPV proteins E2, E6 and E7, with the most dominant response against E2. Using intratumoral B cells and plasma cells, we generated several HPV-specific human monoclonal antibodies, which exhibited a high degree of somatic hypermutation, consistent with chronic antigen exposure. Single-cell RNA sequencing analyses detected activated B cells, germinal centre B cells and ASCs within the tumour microenvironment. Compared with the tumour parenchyma, B cells and ASCs were preferentially localized in the tumour stroma, with well-formed clusters of activated B cells indicating ongoing germinal centre reactions. Overall, we show that antigen-specific activated and germinal centre B cells as well as plasma cells can be found in the tumour microenvironment. Our findings provide a better understanding of humoral immune responses in human cancer and suggest that tumour-infiltrating B cells could be harnessed for the development of therapeutic agents.

The alkaline phosphatase-streptavidin enzyme amplification conjugate (APSA) was diluted and quantified to the equivalent of one enzyme molecule injected on column by monitoring the production of excess adenosine from adenosine monophosphate (AMP) using sensitive and selective enzyme-linked mass spectrometric assay. The APSA enzyme conjugate has a mass of about 195 kDa and catalyzed the production of millions of enzyme products over the course of incubation that may be sensitively quantified by liquid chromatography, electrospray ionization, and mass spectrometry. APSA enzyme conjugate from fg/mL to ag/mL alongside 0 g/mL (control) was incubated with the substrate 1 mM AMP for 2 h in free solution before collecting a 1 μL of sample of the enzyme product adenosine for injection and analysis by LC-MS. The enzyme product adenosine showed a Gaussian distribution after log10 transformation. The safe limit of detection and quantification was approximately 250 zg of APSA enzyme conjugate injected on column. A linear signal with acceptable error was observed at the mass of the enzyme product adenosine from 10 to 10000 zg of APSA enzyme conjugate injected, compared to controls without enzyme. It was possible to make a linear and Gaussian measurement to the single molecule range of the universal APSA enzyme amplification conjugate per micro liter injected with approximately 10% error. This study describes the first linear and Gaussian quantification of enzyme product from the equivalent of one enzyme conjugate molecule injected onto LC-MS for analysis.

Purpose: On the basis of synergistic effects between green tea polyphenon E (PPE) and EGFR–tyrosine kinase inhibitor in preclinical studies, we conducted a phase Ib study of the PPE and erlotinib combination in patients with advanced premalignant lesions (APL) of the oral cavity and larynx. Patients and Methods: Patients were treated with a fixed dose of PPE (200 mg three times a day) and dose escalation of erlotinib (50, 75, 100 mg daily) for 6 months with tissue biopsy at baseline and 6 months. Primary endpoints were safety and toxicity; secondary endpoints were evaluation of pathologic response, cancer-free survival (CFS), overall survival (OS), and biomarker modulation. Results: Among 21 enrolled patients, 19 began treatment and 17 completed 6 months of treatment with PPE and erlotinib. Main characteristics of treated patients: 15 severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ and 17 oral cavity. Only skin rash was associated with dose-limiting toxicity and MTD. Recommended doses for phase II studies are PPE 600 mg daily plus erlotinib 100 mg daily for 6 months. Pathologic responses in 17 evaluable patients: pathologic complete response (47%) and pathologic partial response (18%). The 5-year CFS and OS were 66.3% and 93%, respectively. Among tested biomarkers, only phosphorylated ERK was correlated with response to treatment. Conclusions: Treatment with PPE and erlotinib combination was well tolerated in patients with APLs of the head and neck, and showed a high rate of pathologic response with excellent CFS. This combination deserves further investigation for the chemoprevention and/or prevention of second primary tumors in early-stage head and neck cancer.

Background. As the important components in polycomb repressive complexes 1 (PRC1) and heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1), Chromobox (CBX) family members are involved in epigenetic regulatory function, transcriptional repression, and other cellular metabolisms. Increasing studies have indicated significant associations between CBX and tumorigenesis, which is a progression in different types of cancers. However, the information about the roles of each CBX in gastric cancer is extremely limited. Methods. We explored CBX mRNA expression, corrections with clinicopathological parameters, protein expression, prognostic values, enrichment analysis with several databases including Oncomine, Human Protein Atlas, UALCAN, Kaplan-Meier plotter, cBioPortal, GeneMANIA, and Enrichr. Results. In our study, comparing to the normal tissues, higher mRNA expression of CBX1/2/3/4/5/8 and lower mRNA expression of CBX7 were found in GC tissues while upregulations of CBX1/2/3/4/5/8 and downregulations of CBX7 were indicated to be significantly correlated to the nodal metastasis status and individual cancer stages in GC patients. As for protein level, the expression of CBX2/3/4/5/6 was higher and the expression of CBX7 was lower in the GC tissues than those in the normal. What is more, higher mRNA expression of CBX1/5/6/8 and lower mRNA expression of CBX7 were markedly correlated to poor outcomes of OS and FP in GC patients. Besides, high mutation rate of CBXs (42%) was observed in GC patients. Conclusions. We suggest that CBX5/7 may serve as potential therapeutic targets for GC while CBX1/8 may serve as potential prognostic indicators for GC.

Prolonged survival and expanded treatment options in myeloma patients have led to adverse events associated with treatment getting increased attention. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the incidence of ixazomib-associated cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs) and to compare the rates of ixazomib-associated CVAEs and related therapies. CVAEs were defined as heart failure, hypertension, ischemia, and arrhythmia. All-grade and high-grade CVAEs and study characteristics were recorded. A total of 266 potentially relevant articles were identified, and 246 were excluded after review. Twenty studies of 1715 patients with multiple myeloma were thus considered in this study. The estimated rates of all-grade and high-grade ixazomib associated CVAEs were 11.2 and 3.7%, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that median age ≥65 years, none phase 1 trial and combination regimen were associated with higher rates of high-grade ixazomib associated CVAEs. Child abuse is a common experience among prisoners in China and associated with elevated psychiatric comorbidity. However, the association between child abuse profiles and dissociation is unclear. The extent to which the relationship between these profiles and dissociation might influence psychiatric comorbidity and self-concealment is also unclear. This study examined the impact of this relationship on the preceding outcomes among prisoners in China using Latent Class Analysis. Four hundred and ninety-six male prisoners from China completed questionnaires measuring child abuse, dissociation, self-concealment, and psychiatric comorbidity. A three-class solution was achieved: Class 1 (neglected with moderate dissociation) prisoners had a minimal level of abuse, the highest level of neglect experience, and a medium level of dissociation; Class 2 (low neglect with low dissociation) prisoners also had a minimal level of abuse but lower levels of neglect experience and dissociation; Class 3 (abused and neglected with high dissociation) prisoners had high levels of child abuse, neglect, and dissociation. Controlling for age, Class 3 reported significantly higher psychiatric comorbidity and self-concealment than the other two classes. Class 1 was more depressed than Class 2; Class 2 was more likely to engage in self-concealment than Class 1. To conclude, the kinds of childhood maltreatment experienced by prisoners and their readiness to detach from distressing emotions can influence the severity of current distress symptoms and the tendency to conceal things about themselves.

Older adults with cancer have high symptom burden and unmet needs and may benefit from palliative care (PC). However, little is known about their knowledge and understanding of PC. This study examined the knowledge, beliefs, and misconceptions about PC in older adults with cancer in the United States.We used data from National Cancer Institute's 2018 wave of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). A total of 370 individuals aged 65 and older with a diagnosis of cancer were included in this study. The outcomes included PC knowledge, goals, and misconceptions. The main predictors included general health status, chronic conditions, functional limitations, and types of cancer.About two thirds of the sample (65.31%) did not have any knowledge of PC. Among those who had some knowledge, they had good understanding of PC goals, but also had many misconceptions about PC. Multiple regression analysis showed that older age (p .001), racial minority (p = .021), and lower education (p = .001) was associated with lacking knowledge of PC. Individuals with some functional limitations tended to have better understanding and fewer misconceptions of PC.The knowledge about PC is low in older adults with cancer in the US. Educational interventions need to be implemented to increase knowledge and reduce the misconceptions about PC in this population. Increasing knowledge of PC may ultimately lead to increased access to PC and improve the quality of life in this population.

Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a highly malignant subtype of soft tissue sarcoma, accounting for 5% of cases. Immunotherapy guided by immune cell infiltration (ICI) is reportedly a promising treatment strategy. Here, MFS samples (n = 104) from two independent databases were classified as ICI clusters A/B/C and gene clusters A/B/C. Then, a close relationship between ICI and gene clusters was established. We found that the features of these clusters were consistent with the characteristics of immune-inflamed tumors (cluster C), immune-desert tumors (cluster B), and immune-excluded tumors (cluster A). Moreover, cluster C was sensitive to immunotherapy. Finally, an independent ICI score was established to predict the therapeutic effect, which has prospects for application in guiding immunotherapy during clinical practice.

163. Religious or Spiritual? Text Analysis of the Free Entries in Defining Religiosity and Spirituality

- Abstract
Progress in psychology of religion and spirituality benefits from advancement and enrichment of definitions. Dozens of definitions of religion and spirituality have been offered in the history of the field, however, most of them were generated from a top-down, theory-driven process. This study utilized a bottom-up approach to examine folk definitions of religion and spirituality and, with the help of text analytic tools, offers a complementary from people’s (vs. scholarly) perspective. Data were free entries of defining “religion” and “spirituality” collected from English-speaking American individuals. Three waves of data were collected. Wave 1 included n = 1,046 individual definitions, Wave 2 included n = 276 individuals, and Wave 3 included n = 214 individuals. Word frequency approaches showed that religion can be best defined as specific organized beliefs whereas spirituality can be defined as relating to personal world and life. Topic Modeling confirmed the distinctiveness of words that went into defining religion versus spirituality. Finally, a dictionary approach using LIWC suggested that the definition of religion involved social connections and power, and a mindset of authority and class. Definition of spirituality involved various human experiences and reflected high level of interest and cognitive complexity. Cohort data suggested a trend that over time definitions of spirituality shifted to focus more on connectedness, personal feelings, and humanity from a previous focus on religious ideas of belief and god.

There are few concentrated studies on wage inequality across local labor markets at the city or metropolitan level. This paper studies the changes in wage inequality among 170 metropolitan areas by using micro-level data from the U.S. Census and American Community Survey from 1980 to 2019. We propose that shifts in the relative demand for “college-educated” or “college equivalent” workers have been persistent in both temporal and spatial dimensions; and that this persistence has contributed to the increase in wage inequality along with the rise in managerial employment. Using fixed-effects models, we find that on average, changes in managerial intensity between 1980 and 2019 accounts for 6.9% of the change in wage inequality across U.S. labor markets.

Spiritually incorporating couple therapy (SICT)-couple therapy that incorporates spiritual interventions-has a growing research base. Information is limited on how spiritual interventions are used in practice; thus we studied treatment-as-usual (TAU). SICT is treatment that, at a couple's request, sometimes draws upon spiritual resources when addressing relational issues. We tracked 65 couples from 29 couple therapists (who advertised as spiritually incorporating therapists) over 402 sessions of SICT. Couple spirituality predicted use of spiritual interventions more than did therapist spirituality. The most used spiritual interventions included silent prayer for the couple, discussions of hope and forgiveness, and encouragement to consult their heart. In SICT, therapists used evidence-based couple therapy approaches. SICT should (a) treat highly religious couples in high distress as being at risk for early drop out; (b) follow couples' leads in using spiritual methods; and (c) draw on evidence-based couple and spiritual practices. Many studies have reported evidence suggesting that dispositional forgivingness has positive implications for different domains of well-being. However, relatively few methodologically rigorous studies have been conducted in the Global South, particularly in post-conflict settings where forgiveness could play an important role in supporting individual well-being. In this three-wave cohort study of predominantly young adult Colombians (n = 1575), we examined the associations of dispositional forgivingness with 20 well-being outcomes across several domains of well-being: psychological distress, psychological well-being, physical health, social well-being, and character strengths/virtues. Using an outcome-wide analytic design that included extensive control for potential confounding and reverse causation by adjusting for a range of covariates assessed in Wave 1 (2017), we found that dispositional forgivingness assessed in Wave 2 (2018) was at least modestly associated with improvements in one or more facet of each well-being domain assessed approximately 1 year later in Wave 3 (2019). Associations tended to be stronger for outcomes in the domains of psychological distress, psychological well-being, social well-being, and character strengths/virtues compared to the physical health domain. These longitudinal findings suggest that dispositional forgivingness might promote individual well-being in societies with a long history of ongoing civil unrest, conflict, and war.

Chinese nouns lack inflection and cannot reflect the quantitative relationship between singular and plural numbers. However, neural processes of picture naming are different from those of words. We assume that Chinese single and plural picture naming is different, and they may involve quantitative processing. Therefore, Experiment 1 was designed by picking picture naming as the task and Chinese as the target language and compared the accuracy, reaction time, and event-related potentials (ERPs) between single and plural picture naming, where two types of pictures were mixed. Although the T-test showed no significant differences in behavioral data, there were differences in ERPs. ERP differences involved two effects: P1 of 160–180 ms and P2 of 220–260 ms in the parietal-occipital lobe. These differences are suggested to reflect the neural differences in quantitative processing. Therefore, Chinese singular and plural picture naming consists of word production and implicit quantitative processing simultaneously. To explore the relationship between the two processings, we added a semantic factor (inanimate vs. animate items) to the quantity factor of Experiment 1 and carried out Experiment 2, with the observation indexes unchanged. There were no significant differences in behavioral data among the four conditions. After variance analysis, ERPs results indicated an interaction between semantic and quantitative factors in the central area at 180–280 ms. In summary, we suggest that Chinese singular and plural picture naming includes two simultaneous neural processing tasks: word production and quantitative processing, which interact in the central area at 180–280 ms.

Hope has been conceptualized as agency and pathways to achieve goals. However, this goal-directed conceptualization does not encapsulate all situations in which hope may be beneficial. To address the dispositional motivation to endure when a desired goal seems unattainable, unlikely, or even impossible (i.e., goal-transcendent hope), we provide initial psychometric evidence for the new Persevering Hope Scale (PHS). We developed and refined the PHS with undergraduates at a public college (Study 1) and replicated our findings in a community adult sample (Study 2). We replicated and extended these findings using longitudinal data with undergraduates at a faith-based college (Study 3) and a community sample of chronically ill adults (Study 4), and examined measurement invariance (Study 5). Scores on the PHS demonstrated robust evidence of estimated internal consistency and of criterion-related, convergent/discriminant, and incremental validity. Estimated temporal stability was modest. Partial scalar invariance was evidenced across samples, and full scalar invariance was evidenced across gender, race/ethnicity, and time. These preliminary findings suggest that the PHS is a psychometrically sound measure of persevering hope. Its use can broaden the current body of literature on trait hope to include goal-transcendent hope and advance research on the nature and benefits of this important construct.

Fetal serum supports the immortal growth of mammalian cell lines in culture while adult serum leads to the terminal differentiation and death of cells in culture. Many of the proteins in fetal serum that support the indefinite division and growth of cancerous cell lines remain obscure. The peptides and proteins of fetal versus adult serum were analyzed by liquid chromatography, nano electrospray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). Three batches of fetal serum contained the Alpha Fetoprotein marker while adult serum batches did not. Insulin (INS), and insulin-like growth factor (ILGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) were increased in fetal serum. New fetal growth factors including MEGF, HDGFRP and PSIP1 and soluble growth receptors such as TNFR, EGFR, NTRK2 and THRA were discovered. Addition of insulin or the homeotic transcription factor PSIP1, also referred to as Lens Epithelium Derived Growth Factor (LEDGF), partially restored the rounded phenotype of rapidly dividing cells but was not as effective as fetal serum. Thus, a new growth factor in fetal serum, LEDGF/PSIP1, was directly observed by tandem mass spectrometry and confirmed by add back experiments to cell culture media alongside insulin.

Transforming growth factor-beta TGF-β-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in bronchial epithelial cells contributes to airway wall remodeling in asthma. This study aims to explore the role of amygdalin, an active ingredient in bitter almonds, in TGF-β-induced EMT in bronchial epithelial cells and to elucidate the possible mechanisms underlying its biological effects.An asthmatic mouse model was established through ovalbumin induction. Primary mouse bronchial epithelial cells and a human bronchial epithelial cell line were incubated with transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) to induce EMT, whose phenotype of cells was evaluated by the expressions of EMT markers [alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), vimentin, and fibronectin] and cell migration capacity. A co-immunoprecipitation assay was performed to assess the ubiquitination of heparanase (HPSE).In asthmatic model mice, amygdalin treatment relieved airway wall remodeling and decreased expressions of EMT markers (α-SMA and vimentin). In TGF-β-treated bronchial epithelial cells, amygdalin treatment decreased the mRNA and protein levels of EMT markers (α-SMA, vimentin, and fibronectin) without impairing cell viability. Through the Swiss Target Prediction database, HPSE was screened as a candidate downstream target for amygdalin. HPSE overexpression further promoted TGF-β-induced EMT while the HPSE inhibitor suppressed TGF-β-induced EMT in bronchial epithelial cells. In addition, HPSE overexpression reversed the inhibitory effect of amygdalin on TGF-β-induced EMT in bronchial epithelial cells. The following mechanism exploration revealed that amygdalin downregulated HPSE expression by enhancing ubiquitination.Our study showed that amygdalin inhibited TGF-β-induced EMT in bronchial epithelial cells and found that the anti-EMT activity of amygdalin might be related to its regulatory effect on HPSE expression.

Asthma is an inflammatory syndrome characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, bronchial inflammation, and airway remodeling. Abnormal proliferation of airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) is the main pathological feature of asthma. This study investigated the function and mechanism of serine arginine-rich splicing factor 1 (SRSF1) in ASMC proliferation in asthma.SRSF1 expressions in the bronchi of ovalbumin-induced asthmatic mice and IgE-treated mouse ASMCs (mASMCs) were evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot. The localization and expression of SRSF1 in the bronchi of asthmatic mice were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Functionally, gain- and loss-of-function assays, flow cytometry, and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays were conducted. Mechanistically, RNA degradation assay, RNA immunoprecipitation, RNA pull-down, and dual-luciferase reporter gene assays were carried out.SRSF1 was highly expressed in the bronchi of ovalbumin-induced asthma mice and IgE-treated mASMCs and was mainly located in the nucleus. Experiments on the function of SRSF1 showed that the silencing of SRSF1 induced the cell cycle of mASMC arrest and restrained mASMC proliferation. Investigations into the mechanism of SRSF1 revealed that SRSF1 and miR-135a are competitively bound to the 3'UTR region of Cyclin D2 (CCND2). SRSF1 overexpression repressed the degradation of CCND2 mRNA, and miR-135a negatively regulated CCND2 expression. Furthermore, SRSF1 knockdown inhibited ASMC proliferation in asthma mouse models by regulating the levels of miR-135a and CCND2.SRSF1 knockdown repressed ASMC proliferation in asthma by regulating miR-135a/CCND2 levels.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a well known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Mitochondria are the center of intracellular energy metabolism and the main source of reactive oxygen species. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been identified as a key factor in diabetes-associated brain alterations contributing to neurodegenerative events. Defective insulin signaling may act in concert with neurodegenerative mechanisms leading to abnormalities in mitochondrial structure and function. Mitochondrial dysfunction triggers neuronal energy exhaustion and oxidative stress, leading to brain neuronal damage and cognitive impairment. The normality of mitochondrial function is basically maintained by mitochondrial quality control mechanisms. In T2DM, defects in the mitochondrial quality control pathway in the brain have been found to lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and cognitive impairment. Here, we discuss the association of mitochondrial dysfunction with T2DM and cognitive impairment. We also review the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial quality control and impacts of mitochondrial quality control on the progression of cognitive impairment in T2DM.

To investigate the osteogenic effect of nano-grade pearl powder(NPP)/chitosan-hyaluronic acid (C-HA)/recombinant human bone morphology protein-2 (rhBMP-2) artificial bone.A bone defect model with a diameter of 7 mm and a height of 10 mm was made at the distal end of the femur. NPP/C-HA stent containing rhBMP-2 was prepared according to the shape of the defect. No material was implanted in the defect as blank group. NPP/C-HA was used as the control group, NPP/C-HA/rhBMP-2 was implanted into the experimental group. At 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks, the bone effects of each component were detected by cone-beam CT(CBCT), H-E and Masson staining. Serum ALP activity and OCN in tissues to determine the osteogenic differentiation and osteogenesis maturity were detected. SPSS 18.0 software package was used for statistical analysis.At 12 weeks, the defect was completely repaired in the experimental group. No immunological side effects such as inflammation and rejection were observed. At 8 and 12 weeks, CBCT showed that the experimental group had a higher CT value (Hounsfield units, HU) compared with the control group and the blank group(P0.05). H-E and Masson staining showed that the experimental group had obvious new bone formation compared with the control group and the blank group at 8 weeks and 12 weeks, and ALP activity of the experimental group was significantly different from the control group and the blank group at 8 weeks. OCN immunohistochemical scoring of the experimental group was significantly different from the control group and the blank group(P0.05).NPP/C-HA/rhBMP-2 has good tissue fusion, osteoinductivity, osteoconductivity and osteogenicity, which is expected to provide more effective treatment for bone repair.

A novel Cd(II)-based coordination polymer, namely {[Cd3L3(dbp)2]}n (1), was solvothermally prepared based on the rigid ligand 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2L) and N-donor linker 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine (dbp). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that compound 1 possesses a fascinating 3D architecture, constructed from a trinuclear secondary building unit [Cd3(COOR)6] and linear L2− linker. The whole structure of compound 1 can be simplified as uninodal 6-connected sxb network with Schlafli symbol of {485,463}. Compound 1 exhibits strong photoluminescent emissions with emission peak at 425 nm. Most strikingly, 1 could be selectively quenched by Cu2+ ion and nitrobenzene (NB) as potential luminescent sensory material. Meanwhile, vapor-phase fluorescence response of 1 toward NB was also investigated.

Microwave irradiation is considered as a potential alternative technology for promoting the progress of wine aging. The effects of microwave irradiation on some important physicochemical properties of young Cabernet Sauvignon dry red wine were studied. The results indicated that there were significant changes in total phenolic compounds (TPC), total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA), titratable acidity (TA), and DPPH-free radical scavenging activity (DFRSA), while pH and electrical conductivity (EC) hardly changed. DFRSA was correlated to TPC, TMA, and TA during microwave treatment. The changing trend of chromatic characteristics (CC), which induced by microwave irradiation, was consistent with that of aging red wine. The results of principal component analysis showed that there was a big difference between the untreated red wine and the treated red wine under different microwave conditions. The results suggested that microwave technology could change some physicochemical properties of red wine and promote the aging of red wine.

Biological modifications of the silk fibroin (silk) material have broad applications in textiles, biomedical materials and other industrial materials. It is economical to incorporate nanoparticles to the biosynthesis of silk fibroin by adding them to silkworm larval diets. This strategy may result in the rapid stable production of modified silk. Glucose-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used to improve the AgNPs' biocompatibility, and the AgNPs were efficiently incorporated into silk by feeding. Larvae fed with AgNPs produced silk with significantly improved antibacterial properties and altered silk secondary structures. Both positive and negative effects on the growth and synthesis of silk proteins were observed after different AgNPs doses. Larvae feeding with low concentration of 0.02% and medium 0.20% AgNPs have greater transfer efficiencies of AgNPs to silk compared with feeding high concentration of 2.00% AgNPs. In addition, the elongation and tensile strength of the produced silk fibers were also significantly increased, with greater mammalian cell compatibility. The appropriate AgNPs concentration in the diet of silkworms can promote the synthesis of silk proteins, enhance their mechanical properties, improve their antibacterial property and inhibit the presence of Gram-negative bacteria.

Purpose The chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS) is a reliable and valid instrument to comprehensively assess patients’ taste alterations in an easy way. We aimed to translate it and test its psychometric properties among Chinese cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Method A convenience sample of 227 cancer patients were recruited in a tertiary cancer hospital in Beijing. The Chinese version of the CiTAS (C-CiTAS) was developed via rigorous translation methods. An exploratory structural equation model (ESEM) was used to test its construct validity. Correlations between the C-CiTAS scores and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 scores were calculated for convergent validity. The overall taste alterations scale (OTAS) score was used to test its discriminant validity. Reliabilities were also examined. Results The majority of patients undergoing chemotherapy experienced minor to mild taste alterations. The current factor analysis results using the ESEM supported the original factor solution of the CiTAS, and no item of the CiTAS was dropped. The C-CiTAS demonstrated good construct validity, convergent validity and discriminant validity. The Cronbach's alphas of the C-CiTAS were 0.900 for the overall scale and from 0.570 to 0.857 for the four subscales. Introduction: This study aimed to characterize antimicrobial resistance (AMR), molecular determinants of AMR and virulence, as well as clonal relationship of Streptococcus agalactiae isolates from women at 35-37 weeks of gestation in the Chaoshan metropolitan area of southern China. Methodology: Bacterial strains isolated from vaginal swabs were identified and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed by using a Vitek 2 Compact system (BioMérieux, France). Resistance and virulence genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the clonal relationship was analysed by multiple locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). Statistical analysis was carried out by using SPSS software, version 19.0. Results: All GBS were susceptible to benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, tigecycline, linezolid and vancomycin, but a considerable proportion was resistant to clindamycin (29.67%), erythromycin (46.15%), azithromycin (63.74%), tetracycline (84.62%) and quinolones (25.27%). The carrier rates of ermB (69.04%) and mefA/E (64.28%) were detected in these GBS strains resistant to erythromycin. In terms of MLVA detection, 91 GBS strains were categorized into 43 genotypes and 6 clusters. All GBS harboured hylB and cylE genes, most of which carried a combination of PI-1 and PI-2a genes as a common virulence gene profile. Conclusions: The high level of resistance conferred by some corresponding resistance genes to macrolides, lincosamides and quinolones of GBS isolates from pregnant women in southern China, has reinforced the necessity for monitoring GBS strain resistance to the above agents. Comparative genetic studies of GBS isolates, especially efforts to understand the relationship between pilus islands and genotype, were essential for conducting infection control and epidemiological comparisons between countries.

Conventional imaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and digital subtraction angiography have limited temporospatial resolutions and shortcomings like invasive angiography, potential allergy to contrast agents, and image deformation, that restrict their application in high-resolution visualization of the structure of microvessels. In this study, through comparing synchrotron radiation (SR) absorption-contrast imaging to absorption phase-contrast imaging, it was found that SR-based phase-contrast imaging could provide more detailed ultra-high-pixel images of microvascular networks than absorption phase-contrast imaging. Simultaneously, SR-based phase-contrast imaging was used to perform high-quality, multi-dimensional and multi-scale imaging of rat brain angioarchitecture. With the aid of image post-processing, high-pixel-size two-dimensional virtual slices can be obtained without sectioning. The distribution of blood supply is in accordance with the results of traditional tissue staining. Three-dimensional anatomical maps of cerebral angioarchitecture can also be acquired. Functional partitions of regions of interest are reproduced in the reconstructed rat cerebral vascular networks. Imaging analysis of the same sample can also be displayed simultaneously in two- and three-dimensional views, which provides abundant anatomical information together with parenchyma and vessels. In conclusion, SR-based phase-contrast imaging holds great promise for visualizing microstructure of microvascular networks in two- and three-dimensional perspectives during the development of neurovascular diseases.

Microtubule-associated serine/threonine kinase 1 (MAST1) is a central driver of cisplatin resistance in human cancers. However, the molecular mechanism regulating MAST1 levels in cisplatin-resistant tumors is unknown. Through a proteomics screen, we identified the heat shock protein 90 B (hsp90B) chaperone as a direct MAST1 binding partner essential for its stabilization. Targeting hsp90B sensitized cancer cells to cisplatin predominantly through MAST1 destabilization. Mechanistically, interaction of hsp90B with MAST1 blocked ubiquitination of MAST1 at lysines 317 and 545 by the E3 ubiquitin ligase CHIP and prevented proteasomal degradation. The hsp90B-MAST1-CHIP signaling axis and its relationship with cisplatin response were clinically validated in cancer patients. Furthermore, combined treatment with a hsp90 inhibitor and the MAST1 inhibitor lestaurtinib further abrogated MAST1 activity and consequently enhanced cisplatin-induced tumor growth arrest in a patient-derived xenograft model. Our study not only uncovers the regulatory mechanism of MAST1 in tumors but also suggests a promising combinatorial therapy to overcome cisplatin resistance in human cancers.

This first analysis of the Religious Fundamentalism Scale in Iran further examined findings that conservative religious commitments have positive adjustment implications outside the West. Religious Fundamentalism in a sample of 385 Iranian university students displayed direct relationships with Muslim religiosity and spirituality and correlated positively with the Transcendence and negatively with the Symbolism Post-Critical Beliefs (PCB) factors. Religious Fundamentalism, and conservative religiosity more generally, predicted better mental health in relationship with variables related to self-regulation, narcissism, and splitting. PCB factors defined a fundamentalist attitude of Literal Affirmation that also displayed some linkages with more adaptive psychological functioning. Iranians who self-identified as “both religious and spiritual” were more conservative religiously and more adjusted psychologically than three other religious-spiritual types. Conservative religiosity did predict the maladjustment of Exploitable Dependency. These data further suggested that conservative religiosity can have largely, though not wholly, positive mental health implications outside the West.

Bifactor models were applied to the NEO-FFI-3, HEXACO PI-R, and BFI-2 questionnaires. Factor scores of factors representing the domains of the questionnaires, evaluation, and acquiescence were estimated. Simple and multiple validities of the factor scores were compared with summated scale validities. The evaluation factor was a significant predictor of GPA in all questionnaires. There was little evidence of a relation of GPA to the acquiescence factor. The validities of the domain factor scores, controlling for the evaluation and acquiescence factors, were uniformly more negative than those of corresponding summated scales. Results suggest that the evaluative contamination of Big Five and HEXACO summated scores can be isolated and used effectively with bifactor modeling techniques.

Summary Background Anthracycline dose optimisation in the treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma has rarely been tested. We aimed to find out whether R-CEOP70 was non-inferior to R-CHOP50 with less cardiotoxicity, and whether R-CEOP90 had a superior efficacy to R-CHOP50 or R-CEOP70 with acceptable toxic effects. Methods In this multicentre, phase 3, randomised, controlled study (NHL-001), patients with newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma or follicular lymphoma grade 3B were enrolled from 20 centres of the Multicenter Hematology–Oncology Programs Evaluation System in China. Young patients (16–60 years) were randomly assigned 1:1:1 (block size of six) to six courses of R-CHOP50, R-CEOP70, or R-CEOP90, and older patients (61–80 years) were assigned 1:1 (block size of four) to R-CHOP50 or R-CEOP70. Patients were randomly assigned using computer-assisted permuted-block randomisation. Investigators and patients were not masked to treatment assignment. In the R-CHOP50 group, patients were given rituximab 375 mg/m2 intravenously on day 0, cyclophosphamide 750 mg/m2, doxorubicin 50 mg/m2, and vincristine 1·4 mg/m2 (maximum dose 2 mg) intravenously on day 1, and prednisone 60 mg/m2 (maximum dose 100 mg) orally from day 1–5; in the R-CEOP70 group, epirubicin 70 mg/m2 replaced doxorubicin; and in the R-CEOP90 group, high dose epirubicin 90 mg/m2 replaced doxorubicin. All patients received two additional courses of rituximab 375 mg/m2 intravenously every 21 days. Consolidation radiotherapy was given to patients with bulky disease at diagnosis or residual disease at the end of treatment. The primary endpoint was 2-year progression-free survival. The non-inferiority margin for R-CEOP70 versus R-CHOP50 was defined by hazard ratio [HR] as the upper limit of its 95% CI being no greater than 1·50. Analysis of efficacy and safety were of the intention-to-treat population. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , number NCT01852435 . Findings From May 15, 2013, to March 16, 2016, a total of 648 patients were enrolled, including 404 (62%) young patients (R-CHOP50 [n=135], R-CEOP70 [n=134], or R-CEOP90 [n=135]), and 244 (38%) older patients (R-CHOP50 [n=122] or R-CEOP70 [n=122]). Four patients were excluded from the study for consent withdrawal and one patient for misdiagnosis before treatment. The 2-year progression-free survival in the R-CHOP50 group was 72·5% (95% CI 66·6–77·6) and in the R-CEOP70 group was 72·4% ([66·5–77·5]; HR 1·00 [0·73–1·38]; p=0·99). The non-inferiority was met and adverse events were similar between the two groups. Fewer patients in the R-CEOP70 group (14 [13%] of 110) presented with over 10% decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) than those in the R-CHOP50 group (31 [29%] of 108) at 3 years after remission. For young patients, the 2-year progression-free survival in the R-CEOP90 group was 88·8% (82·1–93·1) and was significantly improved compared with the R-CHOP50 group (75·9% [67·7–82·3]; 0·44 [0·25–0·76]; p=0·0047) and the R-CEOP70 group (77·4% [69·4–83·7%]; 0·49 [0·27–0·86]; p=0·017). Grade 3–4 neutropenia occurred more frequently in the R-CEOP90 group (97 [72%] of 134) than in the R-CHOP50 group (87 [65%] of 133) and R-CEOP70 group (84 [63%] of 133) in young patients but without further increase of clinically significant infections. Fewer patients in the R-CEOP70 group (7 [11%] of 66) and in the R-CEOP90 group (10 [13%] of 79) presented with more than 10% decrease in LVEF than those in the R-CHOP50 group (17 [26%] of 66) at 3 years after remission. Interpretation R-CEOP70 could serve as an alternative regimen to R-CHOP50 with mild long-term cardiotoxicity. Young patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma might benefit from high-dose epirubicin. Epirubicin is an alternative drug to doxorubicin in regular R-CHOP with mild long-term cardiotoxicity.
