156. Security-Aware mapping for TDMA-based real-Time distributed systems

Abstract

Cyber-security has become a critical issue for realtime distributed embedded systems in domains such as automotive, avionics, and industrial automation. However, in many of such systems, tight resource constraints and strict timing requirements make it difficult or even impossible to add security mechanisms after the initial design stages. To produce secure and safe systems with desired performance, security must be considered together with other objectives at the system level and from the beginning of the design. In this paper, we focus on security-Aware design for Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) based real-Time distributed systems. The TDMA-based protocol we consider is an abstraction of many time-Triggered protocols that are being adopted in various safety-critical systems for their more predictable timing behavior, such as FlexRay, Time-Triggered Protocol, and Time-Triggered Ethernet. To protect against attacks on TDMA-based real-Time distributed systems, we apply a message authentication mechanism with time-delayed release of keys, which provides a good balance between security and computational overhead but needs sophisticated network scheduling to ensure that the increased latencies due to delayed key releases will not violate timing requirements. We propose formulations and an algorithm to optimize the task allocation, priority assignment, network scheduling, and key-release interval length during the mapping process, while meeting both security and timing requirements. Experimental results of an automotive case study and a synthetic example show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern $\gamma$-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from $-10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to $\sim$1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential $\gamma$-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed. Additionally, $95\%$ confidence level upper limits of the flux from the investigated sky region are shown. Specific upper limits for 663 GeV $\gamma$-ray AGNs inside the ARGO-YBJ field of view are reported. Abstract

We report the observation of a very high energy \gamma-ray source, whose position is coincident with HESS J1841-055. This source has been observed for 4.5 years by the ARGO-YBJ experiment from November 2007 to July 2012. Its emission is detected with a statistical significance of 5.3 standard deviations. Parameterizing the source shape with a two-dimensional Gaussian function we estimate an extension \sigma=(0.40(+0.32,-0.22}) degree, consistent with the HESS measurement. The observed energy spectrum is dN/dE =(9.0-+1.6) x 10^{-13}(E/5 TeV)^{-2.32-+0.23} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}, in the energy range 0.9-50 TeV. The integral \gamma-ray flux above 1 TeV is 1.3-+0.4 Crab units, which is 3.2-+1.0 times the flux derived by HESS. The differences in the flux determination between HESS and ARGO-YBJ, and possible counterparts at other wavelengths are discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, have been accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy $\gamma$-ray bands, Mrk 501 is very useful for physics associated with jets from AGNs. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is monitoring it for $\gamma$-rays above 0.3 TeV since November 2007. Starting from October 2011 the largest flare since 2005 is observed, which lasts to about April 2012. In this paper, a detailed analysis is reported. During the brightest $\gamma$-rays flaring episodes from October 17 to November 22, 2011, an excess of the event rate over 6 $\sigma$ is detected by ARGO-YBJ in the direction of Mrk 501, corresponding to an increase of the $\gamma$-ray flux above 1 TeV by a factor of 6.6$\pm$2.2 from its steady emission. In particular, the $\gamma$-ray flux above 8 TeV is detected with a significance better than 4 $\sigma$. Based on time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, the broad-band energy spectrum is interpreted as the emission from an electron energy distribution parameterized with a single power-law function with an exponential cutoff at its high energy end. The average spectral energy distribution for the steady emission is well described by this simple one-zone SSC model. However, the detection of $\gamma$-rays above 8 TeV during the flare challenges this model due to the hardness of the spectra. Abstract

In polar oscillations of compact stars dynamical changes in spacetime and matter are in general coupled together. Based on the theory of stellar pulsation proposed by Allen et al. [Phys. Rev. D 58, 124012 (1998)], we establish a feasible approximation scheme to separate spacetime from matter in such oscillations. Two independent second-order ordinary differential equations are obtained, which lead to accurate determination of p-mode and w-mode quasi-normal modes of compact stars, respectively., Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures and 4 tables

Abstract

We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their 2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network of GW detectors and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift observatory. Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background. Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them is consistent with background and the other one was a test, part of a "blind injection challenge". With this work we demonstrate the feasibility of rapid follow-ups of GW transients and establish the sensitivity improvement joint electromagnetic and GW observations could bring. This is a first step toward an electromagnetic follow-up program in the regime of routine detections with the advanced GW instruments expected within this decade. In that regime multi-wavelength observations will play a significant role in completing the astrophysical identification of GW sources. Abstract

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

ARGO-YBJ is an air shower detector array with a fully covered layer of resistive plate chambers. It is operated with a high duty cycle and a large field of view. It continuously monitors the northern sky at energies above 0.3 TeV. In this paper, we report a long-term monitoring of Mrk 421 over the period from 2007 November to 2010 February. This source was observed by the satellite-borne experiments Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and Swift in the X-ray band. Mrk 421 was especially active in the first half of 2008. Many flares are observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands simultaneously. The gamma-ray flux observed by ARGO-YBJ has a clear correlation with the X-ray flux. No lag between the X-ray and gamma-ray photons longer than 1 day is found. The evolution of the spectral energy distribution is investigated by measuring spectral indices at four different flux levels. Hardening of the spectra is observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The gamma-ray flux increases quadratically with the simultaneously measured X-ray flux. All these observational results strongly favor the synchrotron self-Compton process as the underlying radiative mechanism., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The sun blocks cosmic ray particles from outside the solar system, forming a detectable shadow in the sky map of cosmic rays detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. Because the cosmic ray particles are positive charged, the magnetic field between the sun and the earth deflects them from straight trajectories and results in a shift of the shadow from the true location of the sun. Abstract

As the design complexity of cyber-physical systems continues to grow, modeling the system at higher abstraction levels with formal models of computation is increasingly appealing since it enables early design verification and analysis. One of the most important aspects in system modeling and analysis is timing. However, it is very challenging to analyze and verify timing at the early design stages, as the design representation is quite abstract and trade-offs have to be made between the performance requirements defined in terms of system functionality and the cost of the feasible architecture that can implement the functionality. In this paper, we present Metronomy, a function-architecture cosimulation framework that integrates functional modeling from Ptolemy and architectural modeling from the MetroII environment via a mapping interface. Metronomy exploits contract theory for timing verification and design space exploration via co-simulation. Two case studies on an electrical power system and a paper-feed sub-system for a high speed printing press demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Copyright 2014 ACM.

182. Preliminary Research on Soil Conditioner Mediated Citrus Huanglongbing Mitigation in the Field

Abstract

Huanglongbing (HLB, yellow shoot disease) is devastating citrus production worldwide. No effective control measure is currently available. In China, management of HLB through nutrient applications was raised in the past and the interest is renewed recently. In this study, the efficacy of a soil conditioner on different ages of huanglongbing (HLB)-affected citrus trees was evaluated at 3 orchards in Sihui and at different months post treatment in Longmen, Guangdong province. Two species, Shatangju (Citrus. reticulate Blanco cv. Shatang ju) and Chuntianju (C. reticulate cv. Chuntian Ju) were evaluated in a completely random design. Symptomatical observation indicated that the treated plants, especially young tree, had more new shoots and young leaves than the untreated plants. In addition, the young leaves on treated plants looked healthy, with few HLB symptoms, compared to the untreated plants. Real-time PCR results indicated a significant “Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus” (“Las”) reduction in the treated 2-year old citrus plants (p=0.005). “Las” titers were reduced by 2.19 and 2.45 times in the leaves of treated plants, compared to those of untreated 3 and 8-year-old affected Shatangju trees. Statistical data from different aged Shatangju trees showed “Las” titers were significantly positively related with treatment (P=0.004) and age of trees (P=0.022), but not with old and young leaves (P>0.05). Comparative analysis of the efficacy of soil conditioner treatment in 4-year-old Chuntianju at 2, 4, and 7 month-post treatment (mpt) showed that the quantities of “Llas” were significantly lower in newly growing leaves at 7 mpt (94.51% decrease or 2.59 times lower than those at 4 or 2 mpt, p=0.002). Bacterial titers in treated plants were significantly lower (34.12% decrease) than control plants, and 82.72% lower in young leaves than in mature leaves. Abstract

There are significant differences in snow depth predictions among different earth system models, and many models underestimate snow depth, restricting their application. Here, major factors influencing snow depth changes in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) were identified and evaluated. Based on satellite‐derived snow depth and CMIP6 data, an ensemble learning model based on multiple deep learning methods (hereafter referred to as the Multi‐DL model) was developed to predict future snow depth. According to satellite observations and two Operation IceBridge products, the Multi‐DL model yielded root mean square errors of 7.48, 6.20, and 6.17 cm. A continuous decrease in snow depth was observed from 2002 to 2100, and the rate of decrease accelerated with increasing emissions. Under the highest emission scenario, the first snow‐free year occurred in 2047, within the same decade as the first ice‐free year (2056). The predicted warm season snow depth was sensitive to sea ice velocity, sea ice concentration (siconc), precipitation, sea surface temperature (tos) and albedo, while the predicted cold season snow depth was sensitive to tos, air temperature, and siconc. The above parameters introduce some snow depth uncertainty. This method provides new ideas for predicting snow depth, and the generated snow depth records can provide data support for formulating Arctic‐related policies. Plain Language Summary: Snow depth, a vital parameter of snowpack atop sea ice, is essential in the cryosphere. The rapid changes in snow depth on sea ice are attracting increasing amounts of attention to the changes in future snow depth. Multiple models have been used to predict a continuous decrease in snow depth. However, there are significant differences in snow depth predictions among different earth system models, and many models underestimate snow depth. Here, we propose a snow depth prediction model (i.e., the Multi‐DL model) based on multiple deep learning methods. The established model was evaluated using satellite‐derived snow depth data and two Operation IceBridge products. The results indicated that the model performed well in snow depth simulations. By using the Multi‐DL model and simulated data under four Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 emission scenarios, snow depth was generated for four emission scenarios from 2015 to 2100. The results indicated that snow depth showed an accelerated decreasing trend under high‐emission scenarios, while the decrease in snow depth remained stable or was alleviated under low‐emission scenarios. However, it remains unclear whether IL-37 plays a regulatory role in tumor-infiltrating dendritic cells (DCs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Materials and methods: We evaluated the relationship between IL-37 expression and tumor infiltration by DCs in 155 HCC samples through immunohistochemical analysis and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. The effects of IL-37 on the anti-tumor activity of DCs were investigated by ELISA, flow cytometry, real-time quantitative PCR, cytotoxicity assays and tumorigenicity assays.Results: The expression level of IL-37 in HCC samples was positively correlated with the degree of CD1a+ DCs infiltration. The survival rates of patients with both a high expression of IL-37 and a high infiltration by CD1a+ DCs were significantly higher than those of patients with a low expression of IL-37 and a low infiltration by CD1a+ DCs. In vitro chemotaxis analysis indicated that HCC cells overexpressing IL-37 recruited more DCs by secreting higher levels of specific chemokines (eg, CCL3 and CCL20). In addition, IL-37 indirectly up-regulated the expression of major histocompatibility class II molecules, CD86 and CD40 on DCs by acting on tumor cells; IL-37 also indirectly enhanced the anti-tumor effect of T lymphocytes by stimulating DCs to secrete cytokines such as IL-2, IL-12, IL-12p70, interferon-α (IFN-α) and IFN-γ. Finally, overexpression IL-37 in HCC cells significantly delayed tumor growth and increased recruitment of CD11c+ DCs to tumor tissues was also revealed in vivo mouse model.Conclusion: DCs play an important role in IL-37 mediated anti-tumor immune responses in HCC, which may contribute to the development of novel cancer immunotherapeutic strategies.Keywords: IL-37, dendritic cells, antitumor immunity, hepatocellular carcinoma

192. Security-aware mapping for CAN-based real-time distributed automotive systems

Abstract

Cyber-security is a rising issue for automotive electronic systems, and it is critical to system safety and dependability. Current in-vehicles architectures, such as those based on the Controller Area Network (CAN), do not provide direct support for secure communications. When retrofitting these architectures with security mechanisms, a major challenge is to ensure that system safety will not be hindered, given the limited computation and communication resources. We apply Message Authentication Codes (MACs) to protect against masquerade and replay attacks on CAN networks, and propose an optimal Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for solving the mapping problem from a functional model to the CAN-based platform while meeting both the security and the safety requirements. We also develop an efficient heuristic for the mapping problem under security and safety constraints. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to address security and safety in an integrated formulation in the design automation of automotive electronic systems. Experimental results of an industrial case study show the effectiveness of our approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract

We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO candidates, and the likely spectral type of the HMPO candidate for which [Ne II] 12.8 micron emission was detected (IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3). We suggest that IRAS 18151-1208 is a pre-ultracompact HII region HMPO, IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 1 is an embedded young stellar object with the luminosity of a B3 star, and IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3 is a B2 ZAMS star that has formed an ultracompact HII region and disrupted its natal envelope., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

We have mapped [Ne II] (12.8um) and [S IV] (10.5um) emission from W51 IRS 2 with TEXES on Gemini North, and we compare these data to VLA free-free observations and VLT near-infrared images. With 0.5" spatial and 4 km/s spectral resolution we are able to separate the ionized gas into several components: an extended H II region on the front surface of the molecular cloud, several embedded compact H II regions, and a streamer of high velocity gas. We interpret the high velocity streamer as a precessing or fan-like jet, which has emerged from the molecular cloud into an OB star cluster where it is being ionized., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, 2 movies

Abstract

A new type of cosmic-ray experiment is under construction in the Pyh\"asalmi mine in the underground laboratory of the University of Oulu, Finland. It aims to study the composition of cosmic rays at and above the knee region. The experiment, called EMMA, will cover approximately 150 square-metres of detector area. The array is capable of measuring the multiplicity and the lateral distribution of underground muons, and the arrival direction of the air shower.
