Despite the importance of species interaction in modulating the range shifts of plants, little is known about the responses of coexisting life forms to a warmer climate. Here, we combine long-term monitoring of cambial phenology in sympatric trees and shrubs at two treelines of the Tibetan Plateau, with a meta-analysis of ring-width series from 344 shrubs and 575 trees paired across 11 alpine treelines in the Northern Hemisphere. Under a spring warming of +1°C, xylem resumption advances by 2–4 days in trees, but delays by 3–8 days in shrubs. The divergent phenological response to warming was due to shrubs being 3.2 times more sensitive than trees to chilling accumulation. Warmer winters increased the thermal requirement for cambial reactivation in shrubs, leading to a delayed response to warmer springs. Our meta-analysis confirmed such a mechanism across continental scales. The warming-induced phenological mismatch may give a competitive advantage to trees over shrubs, which would provide a new explanation for increasing alpine treeline shifts under the context of climate change.

Treatment with therapy targeting BRAF and MEK (BRAF/MEK) has revolutionized care in melanoma and other cancers; however, therapeutic resistance is common and innovative treatment strategies are needed1,2. Here we studied a group of patients with melanoma who were treated with neoadjuvant BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy (NCT02231775, n = 51) and observed significantly higher rates of major pathological response (MPR; ≤10% viable tumour at resection) and improved recurrence-free survival (RFS) in female versus male patients (MPR, 66% versus 14%, P = 0.001; RFS, 64% versus 32% at 2 years, P = 0.021). The findings were validated in several additional cohorts2–4 of patients with unresectable metastatic melanoma who were treated with BRAF- and/or MEK-targeted therapy (n = 664 patients in total), demonstrating improved progression-free survival and overall survival in female versus male patients in several of these studies. Studies in preclinical models demonstrated significantly impaired anti-tumour activity in male versus female mice after BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy (P = 0.006), with significantly higher expression of the androgen receptor in tumours of male and female BRAF/MEK-treated mice versus the control (P = 0.0006 and P = 0.0025). Pharmacological inhibition of androgen receptor signalling improved responses to BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy in male and female mice (P = 0.018 and P = 0.003), whereas induction of androgen receptor signalling (through testosterone administration) was associated with a significantly impaired response to BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy in male and female patients (P = 0.021 and P < 0.0001). Together, these results have important implications for therapy.

Forest biomass is an important component of terrestrial carbon pools. However, how climate, biodiversity, and structural attributes co-determine spatiotemporal variation in forest biomass remains not well known. We aimed to shed light on these drivers of forest biomass by measuring diversity and structural attributes of tree species in 400-m2 plots located every 100 m along a 4200-m elevational gradient in the eastern Himalayas. We applied structural equation models to test how climate, species richness, structural attributes, and their interactions influence forest biomass. Importantly, species richness was a stronger driver of biomass than environmental and structural attributes such as annual air temperature or stem density. Integrating the availability of energy and the demand for water, potential evapotranspiration was more strongly correlated with biomass than water availability, likely due to the strong influence of the Indian summer monsoon. Thus, interactions between climate and tree community composition ultimately control how much carbon is stored in woody biomass across bioclimatic gradients. This fundamental understanding will support predictive efforts of the forest carbon sink in this hydroclimatically important region and help preserving regional forests as a potent natural solution for climate change mitigation.

[Key message] Pine benefited from a warming climate with increasing recruitment and upslope shifts of alpine treeline but birch treelines were mostly static highlighting the influence of other confounding, local factors., [Abstract] Alpine treeline is considered as a sensitive indicator to climate change. Given that low temperature is a primary constraint of treeline dynamics, they are expected to shift upslope in response to climate warming. The Karakoram, under westerly-dominated climate, has experienced significant warming since the mid-nineteenth century. However, in comparison to monsoon-dominated wetter areas, little is known how alpine treelines have responded to rising temperatures in westerly-dominated dry areas, such as the Karakoram. To test if climate warming triggered upslope shift of alpine treelines in the Karakoram, we compared the recent dynamics of blue pine (Pinus wallichiana) and Himalayan birch (Betula utilis) treeline populations. We expected a higher responsiveness of pine recruitment to temperature as compared with birch due to the higher drought-tolerance of pine species. Tree mapping and dendrochronological methods were used to determine stand age structure, and to reconstruct spatiotemporal treeline dynamics during the past 150 years. The decadal recruitment rate of pine was positively correlated with summer and winter temperatures, whereas the birch recruitment was negatively correlated. Accordingly, pine treelines showed significant upslope shifts in two out of three plots, whilst two birch treelines remained stable in the two studied plots. Such different treeline shift rates between blue pine and birch species agree with their divergent recruitment responses to climate warming. Thus, projected warming in the Karakoram will differently impact treelines depending on species-specific responses with pine showing a more dynamic and rapid upward treeline advancement and birch showing less rapid responses. However, we should consider other non-climatic factors such as anthropogenic disturbances for better understanding treeline dynamics in the Karakoram.
