155. Parallel-Pumped Spin-Wave Instability Threshold Characteristics in Polycrystalline Yttrium Iron Garnet Excited by the Varied Rising-Edge Microwave Pulses

Abstract

The parallel-pumped spin-wave instability (SWI) threshold power, $P_{\mathrm {th}}$ , of polycrystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) excited by microwave pulses with the varied rising-edge time was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The SWI threshold model associated with the rising-edge time $t_{r}$ is developed in terms of the attributes of half-frequency spin waves in the applied static fields $H_{\mathrm {ext}}$ . The results manifest a significant increase in microwave-excited SWI threshold power level when the rising-edge time $t_{r}$ is shortened from 600 to 100 ns at the X-band. In addition, the rising-edge microwave pulses with different time scale distinctly present different threshold responses under the left-wing field region of the butterfly curves. The SWI thresholds associated with the spin-wave initial amplitude grow with increasing $H_{\mathrm {ext}}$ when $t_{r}$ is smaller than the spin-wave relaxation time ( $t_{r}~ \boldsymbol {\le }~200$ ns), while SWI thresholds are more sensitive to the $k$ -dependent spin-wave linewidth, which decreases with the increasing $H_{\mathrm {ext}}$ as $t_{r}$ exceeds the spin-wave relaxation time ( $t_{r} ~ \boldsymbol {\ge }~400$ ns). The calculated responses of the SWI threshold are in close agreement with the measurements.

156. Robust Load Forecasting Towards Adversarial Attacks via Bayesian Learning

Abstract

Electric load forecasting is an essential problem for the power industry, which has a significant impact on power system operation. Currently, deep learning is proved to be an effective tool for load forecasting. However, those learning-based models are vulnerable towards adversarial attacks, which raises concerns about the robustness of load forecasting models. In this study, we propose a Bayesian training method to enhance the robustness of deep learning-based load forecasting models towards adversarial attacks. We theoretically prove that the proposed method can improve the load forecasting robustness against various attacking objectives without compromising the prediction performance. An approximation-based training scheme is applied to reduce the computing burden so as to make the method better applied in practice. The experimental results show that such an approximation still yields higher robustness compared to four recently proposed benchmark robust forecasting methods while maintaining the prediction performance under no attack.

157. Online Network-Based Identification and its Application in Satellite Attitude Control Systems

Abstract

Most satellite attitude control models are built analytically, which requires a clear understanding of the kinematic and dynamic equations of the satellites and the various disturbance models to deal with the interferences and uncertainties in the space environment. This article studies a system identification method to build a system model for satellite attitude control. The satellite model is based on a neural network model, i.e., the RBF-ARX model, which requires only observation data. Unlike the existing offline identification methods for the RBF-ARX model, this article proposes an online identification method that can constantly correct the model according to the newest data. To reduce the computational complexity of identifying the satellite model, a decomposition scheme is also developed. The computational efficiency of the proposed method is analyzed. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed identification method is demonstrated by applying it to two satellite attitude control systems.

Abstract

Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is an emerging concept that can effectively manage a large number of distributed energy resources (DERs). However, the inherent uncertainty of load and renewable generation poses a challenge to reliable VPP power scheduling. This manuscript proposes a novel method for day-ahead VPP scheduling with a joint probabilistic guarantee on its power availability without violating the DER constraints and network constraints. A surrogate polytope is first used to find the inner approximation of the VPP power, implicitly including the low-level DER power, DER constraints, and network constraints. Then, a multivariate Gaussian distribution is used to fit the random parameters of the surrogate polytope, after which the iterative supporting hyperplane algorithm is used to solve the VPP scheduling problem. Extensive case studies based on real-world renewable generation scenarios demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method in out-of-sample cost and reliability, with a manageable computing complexity. • Day-ahead virtual power plant scheduling with a joint probabilistic constraint. • A novel surrogate polytope-based solution with a manageable computing complexity. • Out-of-sample verification based on real-world scenarios. Abstract

Monthly observed and future precipitation magnitudes were subjected to statistical trend analysis to examine possible time series behavior. Future precipitation was downscaled from large-scale output through statistical downscaling. The observed and downscaled future precipitation was analyzed for drought events using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) method. In the Abaya Chamo sub-basin, Ethiopia precipitation is explained by below average magnitudes in most of the low land area, characterized by moderate to extreme drought episodes. Nine drought events were discerned during the period of 1988 to 2015, i.e. once in three years, resulting in harvest failure and subsequent food insecurity. The NCEP-NCAR and CanESM2 model predictors were used to statistically downscale the precipitation data. The monthly observed and downscaled precipitation magnitudes were in good agreement. The RCP-2.6, RCP-4.5 and RCP-8.5 long-term future scenarios were computed to evaluate future drought patterns. The mean annual precipitation scenario decreased by 0.2% to 13.7%, 0.5% to 6.4% and 0.1% to 1.3% for the period from 2016 to 2040, 2050s and 2080s respectively. The increase in mean precipitation was projected to be 0.7% to 12.2%, 0.2% to 11.7% and 0.1% to 17.8% for the period from 2016 to 2040, 2050s and 2080s respectively. The present analysis may provide useful information associated to drought events to decision makers and can be used as a basis for future research in this area.

Abstract

A case-control study was conducted to examine toxin production by isolates of Stachybotrys chartarum and Memnoniella echinata during a study of pulmonary hemosiderosis in infants occurring in Cleveland, OH, in 1993 and 1994. The isolates from S. chartarum were shown to produce a number of highly toxic compounds and the profiles of toxic compounds from M. echinata were similar. The most distinct difference was the fact that the principal metabolites produced by M. echinata were griseofulvins.

Abstract

An improved L-band inverted relativistic magnetron powered by a virtual cathode is presented. An extra emitter is introduced at the end of a slow-wave structure to reduce the desired π mode start-oscillation time, which is critical when short radiation pulses are required. Electrons produced by both upstream and downstream emitters are injected into the interacting space simultaneously, and the rapid increase in electron density in this region accelerates the establishment of a virtual cathode. Furthermore, the additional emitter provides more charged particles for beam–wave interaction, so that the amplitude of output power can be improved. The particle-in-cell simulation demonstrates that a power conversion efficiency of 76.5% could be obtained for a diode voltage of 500 kV and guiding magnetic field of 0.165 T. Compared with the same slow-wave structure powered by a single beam, the output microwave power is increased from 1.1 to 3.1 GW and the startup time is shortened from 53 to 29 ns.

Abstract

Mode converter is one of the most important devices in the high-power microwave (HPM) applications. To conduct an in-depth research for the orthogonal mode converter, a novel 90° compact TM01-TE11 circular waveguide converter working at 9.7 GHz is proposed in this article. This design innovatively integrates the traditional mode converter with 90° bend techniques based on the mode coupling theory, which ensures a compact structure and high-power handling capacity. Calculated and simulated results illustrate that the maximum conversion efficiency of the converter at central frequency reaches 99.4% when the structure length is 535 mm, and the bandwidth reaches 680 MHz when the conversion efficiency exceeds 95%. For demonstration, a prototype is fabricated, and the corresponding experiments are investigated. According to the $S$ -parameter measurement, it has a high conversion efficiency at central frequency. Meanwhile, the high-power performance is conducted by connecting it with a relativistic backward oscillator (RBWO), and the converter works stably under a maximum output power of 4 GW. Abstract

Accumulating evidence indicates that miR-9-5p plays an important role in several diseases, especially tumor progression. In this study, we investigated the clinical significance and biological function of miR-9-5p in prostate cancer (PCa). Using quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis, we found miR-9-5p level was significantly down-regulated in PCa tissues and cell lines. The decreased miR-9-5p expression was associated with tumor size, preoperative PSA, Gleason score and lymph node metastasis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed patients with low level of miR-9-5p had significantly decreased rates of overall survival (OS). Multivariate analyses showed that miR-9-5p was an independent predictor of PCa patients’ prognosis. Through CCK-8 and Transwell assays, miR-9-5p overexpression by miR-9-5p mimics transfection was demonstrated to suppress the proliferation, migration and invasion of PCa cells. Mechanistically, luciferase reporter assay, qRT-PCR and Western blot demonstrated that Utrophin (UTRN) is a direct target of miR-9-5p in PCa cells. The status of UTRN protein in PCa tissues was much higher than that in adjacent tissues by immunohistochemical staining and its mRNA levels were inversely correlated with miR-9-5p in PCa tissues. Importantly, UTRN knockdown by siUTRN imitated the suppressive effects of miR-9-5p on cell proliferation, migration and invasion in PCa. • Proposed a loss-driven urban flood emergency response initiation framework. • The economic losses of 192 combined disaster scenarios were analyzed. • Natural breakpoint method was the optimal method for loss threshold partitioning. • The CEI of the optimal fitting function is 34.78 % higher than traditional method. • The level I emergency response was 9.5 h earlier than the government. Scientific and reasonable emergency response initiation mechanisms can provide important support for decision making regarding the emergency management of urban floods. However, there is a lack of a unified paradigm on how to calculate the threshold for emergency response initiation and reasonably initiate emergency response. Therefore, this study proposes a loss-driven urban flood emergency response initiation framework from the perspective of combined disasters. A discrimination mechanism of the emergency response initiation level was established based on the optimal threshold and loss function. And the rainfall event that occurred in Zhengzhou, China, on July 20, 2021, was taken as an example to realize real-time emergency response discrimination and initiation driven by forecast data. Results showed that the initiation time of the Level I emergency response using the proposed method was 9.5 h earlier than the time of the government release, thereby significantly increasing the preparation time for flood management personnel. In addition, the results of the optimal threshold selection indicated that the Natural Breakpoint method was the optimal method for loss threshold partitioning, with the comprehensive evaluation index (CEI) being 3.56–9.53 % higher than those of the K-means, Equal Interval, and Quantile method. Abstract

Slope excavation is one of the most crucial steps in the construction of a hydraulic project. Excavation project quality assessment and excavated volume calculation are critical in construction management. The positioning of excavation projects using traditional instruments is inefficient and may cause error. To improve the efficiency and precision of calculation and assessment, three-dimensional laser scanning technology was used for slope excavation quality assessment. An efficient data acquisition, processing, and management workflow was presented in this study. Based on the quality control indices, including the average gradient, slope toe elevation, and overbreak and underbreak, cross-sectional quality assessment and holistic quality assessment methods were proposed to assess the slope excavation quality with laser-scanned data. An algorithm was also presented to calculate the excavated volume with laser-scanned data. A field application and a laboratory experiment were carried out to verify the feasibility of these methods for excavation quality assessment and excavated volume calculation. The results show that the quality assessment indices can be obtained rapidly and accurately with design parameters and scanned data, and the results of holistic quality assessment are consistent with those of cross-sectional quality assessment. In addition, the time consumption in excavation quality assessment with the laser scanning technology can be reduced by 70%–90%, as compared with the traditional method. The excavated volume calculated with the scanned data only slightly differs from measured data, demonstrating the applicability of the excavated volume calculation method presented in this study.
