Abstract

The critical heat flux (CHF) corresponding to the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) crisis is a regulatory limit for the licensing of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) worldwide. Despite the abundance of predictive tools available to the reactor thermal-hydraulics community, the path for an accurate CHF model remains elusive. This work approaches the prediction of DNB through a physics-informed machine learning-aided framework (PIMLAF) with the objective of achieving superior predictive capabilities for a rod bundle. In view of the limitations in existing macro-scale physics-driven tools, an improved mechanistic model is first proposed, leveraging key concepts in the liquid sublayer dryout and bubble crowding mechanisms. The proposed mechanistic model is able to predict DNB in different heater geometries for a broad range of flow conditions without the need for recalibration. This model is then incorporated as the physics-informed component of the hybrid framework PIMLAF, which takes advantage of established understanding in the field (i.e., domain knowledge [DK]) and uses machine learning (ML) to capture undiscovered information from the mismatch between the actual and DK-predicted output. Two bundle-related case studies using the PWR subchannel and bundle tests (PSBT) database are carried out to illustrate the PIMLAF’s improved performance over traditional approaches for both interpolation and extrapolation purposes. In light of the PIMLAF’s promising potential to reduce prediction error, reactor vendors are encouraged to leverage their in-house experimental efforts and apply the hybrid framework to potentially achieve margin reductions in the minimum DNB ratio (MDNBR) for the designs of interest.

187. Assessment of the Subchannel Code CTF for Single- and Two-Phase Flows

As part of the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors, the subchannel code CTF is being used for single-phase and two-phase flow analysis under light water reactor operating conditions. Accurate determination of flow distribution, pressure drop, and void content is crucial for predicting margins to thermal crisis and ensuring more efficient plant performance. In preparation for the intended applications, CTF has been validated against data from experimental facilities comprising the General Electric (GE) 3 × 3 bundle, the boiling water reactor full-size fine-mesh bundle tests (BFBTs), the Risø tube, and the pressurized water reactor subchannel and bundle tests (PSBTs). Meanwhile, the licensed, well-recognized subchannel code VIPRE-01 was used to generate a baseline set of simulations for the targeted tests and solution parameters were compared to the CTF results. The flow split verification problem and single-phase GE 3 × 3 results are essentially in perfect agreement between the two codes. For the two-phase GE 3 × 3 cases, flow and quality discrepancies arise in the annular-mist flow regime, yet significant improvement is observed in CTF when void drift and two-phase turbulent mixing enhancement are considered. The BFBT pressure drop benchmark shows close agreement between predicted and measured results in general, although considerable overprediction by CTF is observed at relatively high void locations of the facility. This overestimation tendency is confirmed by the Risø cases. While overall statistics are satisfactory, both BFBT and PSBT bubbly-to-churn flow void contents are markedly overpredicted by CTF. The issues with two-phase closures such as turbulent mixing, interfacial and wall friction, and subcooled boiling heat transfer need to be addressed. Preliminary sensitivity studies are presented herein, but more advanced models and code stability analysis require further investigation.

200. A Time-Independent Control System for Natural Human Gait Assistance With a Soft Exoskeleton

Abstract

When applying exoskeletons for walking assistance, one important consideration is to ensure that the users retain full control over the exoskeleton-provided assistance, which is quite limited in existing exoskeletons due to the absence of a suitable control system. In this article, a time-independent exoskeleton control system is developed based on a novel assistance profile generation method and an iterative force control method to enable continuous assistance adjustment. The assistance profile is formulated as a Gaussian function with a human state variable and can be updated online to adapt to different users. The proposed profile continuously self-adjusts along the movement of the user's leg, especially when users change their walking patterns. The proposed control system iteratively compensates for the force control lag and amplitude attenuation to enable precise tracking of the assistance profile during natural human walking. Experiments have been conducted using a soft exoskeleton on subjects with and without prior experience using an exoskeleton. The experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed control system compared with a common time-dependent control system.
