151. Structure, magnetization, and low-temperature spin dynamic behavior of zincblende Mn-rich Mn(Ga)As nanoclusters embedded in GaAs.

Abstract: We have fabricated a set of samples of zincblende Mn-rich Mn(Ga)As clusters embedded in GaAs matrices by annealing (Ga,Mn)As films with different nominal Mn content at 650 °C. For the samples with Mn content no more than 4.5%, the Curie temperature reaches nearly 360 K. However, when Mn content is higher than 5.4%, the samples exhibit a spin-glass-like behavior. We suggest that these different magnetic properties are caused by the competing result of dipolar and Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction among clusters. The low-temperature spin dynamic behavior, especially the relaxation effect, shows the extreme creeping effect which is reflected by the time constant τ of ∼1011 s at 10 K. We explain this phenomenon by the hierarchical model based on the mean-field approach. We also explain the memory effect by the relationship between the correlation function and the susceptibility. 152. Temperature dependence of effective g factor in diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As.

Abstract: Time resolved magneto-optic Kerr rotation measurements of optically induced spin quantum beats are performed on heavily doped bulk (Ga,Mn)As diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). An effective g-factor of about 0.2–0.3 over a wide range of temperature for both as-grown and annealed (Ga,Mn)As samples is obtained. A larger effective g-factor at lower temperature and an increase of the spin relaxation with increasing in-plane magnetic field are observed and attributed to the stronger p-d exchange interaction between holes and the localized magnetic ion spins, leading to a larger Zeeman splitting and heavy-hole–light-hole mixing. An abnormal dip structure of the g-factor in the vicinity of the Curie temperature suggests that the mean-field model is insufficient to describe the interactions and dynamics of spins in DMS because it neglects the short-range spin correlation effect. Abstract: We have studied magnetic and transport properties of insulating and metallic (Ga,Mn)As layers before and after annealing. A dramatic increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature TC by postgrowth annealing has been realized in both insulating and metallic (Ga,Mn)As. The as-grown insulating (Ga,Mn)As can be turned into metallic by the low-temperature annealing. For all the metallic (Ga,Mn)As, a characteristic feature in the temperature dependence of sheet resistance appears around TC. This phenomenon may provide a simple and more convenient method to determine the TC of metallic (Ga,Mn)As compared with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement. Moreover, the TC of the metallic (Ga,Mn)As obtained by this way is in good agreement with that measured by a SQUID magnetometer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Background: Smoking is the strongest environmental risk factor for reduced pulmonary function. The genetic component of various pulmonary traits has also been demonstrated, and at least 26 loci have been reproducibly associated with either FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) or FEV1/FVC (FEV1/forced vital capacity). Although the main effects of smoking and genetic loci are well established, the question of potential gene-by-smoking interaction effect remains unanswered. The aim of the present study was to assess, using a genetic risk score approach, whether the effect of these 26 loci on pulmonary function is influenced by smoking. Methods: We evaluated the interaction between smoking exposure, considered as either ever vs never or pack-years, and a 26-single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genetic risk score in relation to FEV1 or FEV1/FVC in 50 047 participants of European ancestry from the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) and SpiroMeta consortia. Results: We identified an interaction (βint = −0.036, 95% confidence interval, −0.040 to −0.032, P = 0.00057) between an unweighted 26 SNP genetic risk score and smoking status (ever/never) on the FEV1/FVC ratio. In interpreting this interaction, we showed that the genetic risk of falling below the FEV1/FVC threshold used to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is higher among ever smokers than among never smokers. A replication analysis in two independent datasets, although not statistically significant, showed a similar trend in the interaction effect. Conclusions: This study highlights the benefit of using genetic risk scores for identifying interactions missed when studying individual SNPs and shows, for the first time, that persons with the highest genetic risk for low FEV1/FVC may be more susceptible to the deleterious effects of smoking.

157. Annealing effect on ferromagnetic properties, hole concentration and electronic band structure of GaMnAs epitaxial layers

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the correlation of the magnetism and the carrier concentration with the shift of the spectroscopic critical points for low compensated GaMnAs samples with a high Curie temperature of around 150 K. The GaMnAs layers were grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy. The low-temperature annealing leads to a reduction of Mn interstitials from 0.8 to 0.4% and an enhancement in the hole concentration. The saturation magnetization is 51 emu/cm and the Curie temperature is 150 K after post-growth annealing, while those of as-grown layers are 37 emu/cm and 80 K. The resistivity dropped significantly after the post-growth annealing, due to the fact that the number of Mn, which act as double donors and compensate holes, was significantly reduced by the low-temperature and long-time annealing. The electronic band structure is investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The transition energies of critical points show redshift after post-growth annealing due to the annealing-induced enhancement of the hole concentration. Our results support the valence band picture (the Zener model) in ferromagnetic GaMnAs.

Abstract: We identified and characterized a new cosmocercid nematode species, Cosmocercoides wuyiensis n. sp., through microscopic examination and sequencing of the partial small ribosomal RNA gene (18S rDNA), internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) genes. The new species was isolated from the intestine of the Asiatic frog Amolops wuyiensis Liu and Hu, 1975 captured from four localities of the Anhui province in south-east China. Among the 25 recorded species of the Cosmocercoides genus, the morphology of C. wuyiensis n. sp. is closest to that of C. kiliwai and C. malayensis , which were isolated from various Mexican frog and Malaysian lizard species, respectively. However, C. wuyiensis n. sp. displayed several distinguishing features, such as small size of the male body, two spicules of unequal lengths in the male, small gubernaculum, pre-, ad- and post-cloacal caudal rosette papillae in the ratio of 18–24:2:6 and simple papillae in the ratio of 14:multiple:4, circle and number of punctation in each rosette at 1:11–16, sharply conical tail-end and the presence of lateral alae and somatic papillae in both sexes. BLAST and the phylogenetic analyses of the 18S rDNA and ITS sequences indicated that C. wuyiensis n. sp. belonged to the genus Cosmocercoides , while that of the COI gene sequence of C. wuyiensis n. sp. showed 16.36% nucleotide divergence with C. pulcher and 47.99% nucleotide divergence with C. qingtianensis. 170. Influence of lncRNA ANRIL on neuronal apoptosis in rats with cerebral infarction by regulating the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of long non-coding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) on neuronal apoptosis in rats with cerebral infarction (CI), and to further explore the underlying mechanism of lncRNA ANRIL in the occurrence and development of CI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups using a random number table, including sham group (n=20), CI group (n=20) and CI + lncRNA ANRIL knockdown group [CI + lncRNA ANRIL small-interfering RNA (siRNA) group, n=20]. Focal CI was constructed by suture occlusion. After successful modeling, lncRNA ANRIL siRNA was stereotactically injected into the lateral ventricle of the rats. 24 h after operation, the neurological function of the rats in each group was evaluated by the modified neurological severity score (mNSS). Meanwhile, the infarction area of brain tissues was evaluated using the triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) method. The protein expression levels of apoptosis-related genes, including B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax), were detected via Western blotting. Subsequently, immunofluorescence staining was performed to detect the expression and location of Caspase-3 in brain tissues. Moreover, the apoptosis level of rats in each group was detected by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Furthermore, the expressions of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway-related proteins were detected via Western blotting. RESULTS: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results revealed that the expression level of lncRNA ANRIL in the CI group was significantly increased when compared with that of the sham group (p<0.05). The results of mNSS and TTC staining manifested that knockdown of lncRNA ANRIL could significantly reduce CI-induced neurological deficits and CI area (p<0.05). At the same time, knockdown of lncRNA ANRIL markedly decreased the level of Bax, whereas increased the expression of Bcl-2 (p<0.05). Besides, the number of apoptotic cells in the CI + lncRNA ANRIL siRNA group was remarkably decreased (p<0.05). In addition, lncRNA ANRIL down-regulation remarkably inhibited the phosphorylation of p65 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The inhibitory effect of lncRNA ANRIL knockdown on neuronal apoptosis in CI rats may be probably related to its inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway. 171. Effect of lncRNA GAS5 on the apoptosis of neurons via the notch1 signaling pathway in rats with cerebral infarction.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of long non-coding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) growth arrest specific 5 (GAS5) knockdown on the apoptosis of neurons in rats with cerebral infarction (CI), and to explore the potential mechanism of lncRNA GAS5 in the pathogenesis of CI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 adult male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats aged 12-14 weeks old and weighing (267.14±6.49) g were randomly divided into three groups: Sham operation group (Sham group, n=20), CI group (n=20) and CI + lncRNA GAS5 knockdown group [CI + GAS5 small interfering RNA (siRNA) group, n=20]. The rat model of focal CI was constructed by carotid artery embolization. After the CI model was successfully induced, a certain amount of lncRNA GAS5 siRNAs was injected into the rat lateral ventricle in a stereotactic manner. At 24 h after operation, triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) method was used to detect the infarction area in brain tissues of rats in each group. At the same time, the pathological changes of neurons in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of rats in each group were observed via hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The expressions of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) were detected via Western blotting. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining was adopted to detect the number of apoptotic neurons in brain tissues of rats in each group. Meanwhile, the expression level of Notch intracellular domain (NICD) proteins was measured using the Western blotting technique and immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) showed that the lncRNA GAS5 expression in brain tissues of rats in CI group was significantly higher than that of rats in Sham group (p<0.05). TTC staining results revealed that lncRNA GAS5 knockdown could remarkably reduce the CI area of rats in CI group (p<0.05). In addition, inhibiting lncRNA GAS5 could also significantly reduce the level of pro-apoptotic gene BAX and increase the expression level of anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2 (p<0.05). In the meantime, the number of apoptotic neurons in CI + GAS5 siRNA group was also evidently decreased (p<0.05). Finally, it was found that lncRNA GAS5 knockdown notably inhibited the expression of NICD proteins (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The inhibitory effect of lncRNA GAS5 knockdown on the apoptosis of neurons in CI rats may be related to the activation of the Notch1 signaling pathway. Abstract: Magnetization switching induced by spin–orbit torque is of fundamental interest for developing spintronic devices with low-power consumption and nonvolatility. Here, we report on the spin–orbit torque induced magnetization switching behavior of (001) oriented tetragonal Heusler alloy D022-Mn3Ga films with an intrinsic ferrimagnetic spin structure grown on the GaAs(001) substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy. The out-of-plane hysteresis loop and anomalous Hall effect demonstrated a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and low saturation magnetization of D022-Mn3Ga thin films. The spin–orbit torque induced magnetization switching has been realized in D022-Mn3Ga/Pt heterostructure based Hall devices under an in-plane external field. It is found that the critical switching current density Jc is much smaller than that of the L10-MnGa/heavy metal system. Besides, both a dampinglike effective field HDL and a fieldlike effective field HFL are quantified by performing harmonic Hall voltage measurements. 173. The protective effects of Berberine and Hesperidin on inflammatory factor-stimulating cardiac fibroblasts.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The previous work has shown that Berberine and Hesperidin have beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Berberine and Hesperidin on inflammatory cytokine secretion, proliferation, differentiation, and collagen synthesis of cardiac fibroblasts stimulated by the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and the potential of these drugs to regulate the Notch1 signaling pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS: N eonatal rat primary cardiac fibroblasts were stimulated with 5 ng/mL TGF-β1 as model (TGF) group. In the Berberine (TGF+B) group cells were given TGF-β1, along with 1.25/2.5/5/10 mg/L Berberine, while the Hesperidin (TGF+H) group was treated with TGF-β1 and 12.5/25/50/100 μmmol/L Hesperidin. Cellular proliferation, differentiation, and collagen synthesis were evaluated. The role of the Notch1 signaling pathway in the protective effects of Berberine and Hesperidin was analyzed by using γ-secretase inhibitor (DAPT) to block the Notch1 pathway. RESULTS: 5/10 mg/L Berberine intervention could noticeably decrease both TGF-β1 and IL- 1β levels, 25/50/100 µmol/L Hesperidin could reduce IL-1β secretion from TGF-β1 stimulated cardiac fibroblasts. Both Berberine and Hesperidin decreased the expression of α-SMA and cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner; however, the apoptosis of cardiac fibroblasts was not influenced. 10 mg/L Berberine or at least 50 μmol/L Hesperidin could noticeably decrease MMP-1 expression, and at least 5 mg/L Berberine or 100 μmol/L Hesperidin could markedly reduce MMP-9 expression. Using DAPT to block Notch1 signaling could reverse the protective effects of Berberine and Hesperidin. CONCLUSIONS: Berberine and Hesperidin can reduce the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, differentiation, and proliferation, and increase the collagen synthesis of cardiac fibroblasts stimulated by TGF-β1 via the Notch1 signaling pathway. 176. VLASSICK: The VLA Sky Survey in the Central Kiloparsec

Abstract: At a distance of 8 kpc, the center of our Galaxy is the nearest galactic nucleus, and has been the subject of numerous key projects undertaken by great observatories such as Chandra, Spitzer, and Herschel. However, there are still no surveys of molecular gas properties in the Galactic center with less than 30" (1 pc) resolution. There is also no sensitive polarization survey of this region, despite numerous nonthermal magnetic features apparently unique to the central 300 parsecs. In this paper, we outline the potential the VLASS has to fill this gap. We assess multiple considerations in observing the Galactic center, and recommend a C-band survey with 10 micro-Jy continuum RMS and sensitive to molecular gas with densities greater than 10^4 cm^{-3}, covering 17 square degrees in both DnC and CnB configurations ( resolution ~5"), totaling 750 hours of observing time. Ultimately, we wish to note that the upgraded VLA is not just optimized for fast continuum surveys, but has a powerful correlator capable of simultaneously observing continuum emission and dozens of molecular and recombination lines. This is an enormous strength that should be fully exploited and highlighted by the VLASS, and which is ideally suited for surveying the center of our Galaxy.

Abstract: Physical activity (PA) may modify the genetic effects that give rise to increased risk of obesity. To identify adiposity loci whose effects are modified by PA, we performed genome-wide interaction meta-analyses of BMI and BMI-adjusted waist circumference and waist-hip ratio from up to 200,452 adults of European (n = 180,423) or other ancestry (n = 20,029). We standardized PA by categorizing it into a dichotomous variable where, on average, 23% of participants were categorized as inactive and 77% as physically active. While we replicate the interaction with PA for the strongest known obesity-risk locus in the FTO gene, of which the effect is attenuated by ~30% in physically active individuals compared to inactive individuals, we do not identify additional loci that are sensitive to PA. In additional genome-wide meta-analyses adjusting for PA and interaction with PA, we identify 11 novel adiposity loci, suggesting that accounting for PA or other environmental factors that contribute to variation in adiposity may facilitate gene discovery.

Abstract: Few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) account for environmental exposures, like smoking, potentially impacting the overall trait variance when investigating the genetic contribution to obesity-related traits. Here, we use GWAS data from 51,080 current smokers and 190,178 nonsmokers (87% European descent) to identify loci influencing BMI and central adiposity, measured as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio both adjusted for BMI. We identify 23 novel genetic loci, and 9 loci with convincing evidence of gene-smoking interaction (GxSMK) on obesity-related traits. We show consistent direction of effect for all identified loci and significance for 18 novel and for 5 interaction loci in an independent study sample. These loci highlight novel biological functions, including response to oxidative stress, addictive behaviour, and regulatory functions emphasizing the importance of accounting for environment in genetic analyses. Our results suggest that tobacco smoking may alter the genetic susceptibility to overall adiposity and body fat distribution.

Abstract: Since its discovery in 1911, superconductivity has remained one of the most intriguing phase transitions in the field of condensed-matter physics. Superconductivity, which occurs in certain materials cooled below a critical temperature, involves the disappearance of electrical resistance and the expulsion of external magnetic flux. In 1933, Meissner and Ochsenfeld first reported the expulsion of magnetic flux from the interior of superconducting lead. Their discovery, now known as the Meissner effect, enables the levitation of magnetic objects (e.g., Maglev trains in Japan). For certain unconventional forms of superconductivity, an inverse paramagnetic Meissner effect has been predicted in which superconductivity attracts external flux at a superconductor interface with certain forms of magnetism. In such a system, levitation would not be possible; instead, external flux would be amplified. Here, we probe superconductivity in a thin film of gold coupled to an antiferromagnet-superconductor system using low-energy muons. Our experimental setup consists of an Au/Ho/Nb trilayer in which each layer has a thickness measured in nanometers. We apply an external field, and we conduct measurements below the superconducting transition of Nb (8.5 K). We find that muon particles implanted with a specific energy in gold experience a change in their precession frequency, which is directly related to the magnitude of the local magnetic flux they experience. Because of the extreme sensitivity of this magnetometry technique to magnetism—smaller than 0.1 G—we detect an enhancement of the local magnetic field in gold that exceeds the externally applied field in the superconducting regime. This result provides a direct observation of the paramagnetic Meissner effect and demonstrates that conventional Meissner screening is not a universal property of superconductivity. We expect that our findings will motivate future experiments for harnessing magnetic energy that is generated. Abstract: Thin film magnetic heterostructures with competing interfacial coupling and Zeeman energy provide a fertile ground to study phase transition between different equilibrium states as a function of external magnetic field and temperature. A rare-earth (RE)/transition metal (TM) ferromagnetic multilayer is a classic example where the magnetic state is determined by a competition between the Zeeman energy and antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling energy. Technologically, such structures offer the possibility to engineer the macroscopic magnetic response by tuning the microscopic interactions between the layers. We have performed an exhaustive study of nickel/gadolinium as a model system for understanding RE/TM multilayers using the element-specific measurement technique x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and determined the full magnetic state diagrams as a function of temperature and magnetic layer thickness. We compare our results to a modified Stoner-Wohlfarth-based model and provide evidence of a thickness-dependent transition to a magnetic fan state which is critical in understanding magnetoresistance effects in RE/TM systems. The results provide important insight for spintronics and superconducting spintronics where engineering tunable magnetic inhomogeneity is key for certain applications.

Abstract: Large consortia have revealed hundreds of genetic loci associated with anthropometric traits, one trait at a time. We examined whether genetic variants affect body shape as a composite phenotype that is represented by a combination of anthropometric traits. We developed an approach that calculates averaged PCs (AvPCs) representing body shape derived from six anthropometric traits (body mass index, height, weight, waist and hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio). The first four AvPCs explain >99% of the variability, are heritable, and associate with cardiometabolic outcomes. We performed genome-wide association analyses for each body shape composite phenotype across 65 studies and meta-analysed summary statistics. We identify six novel loci: LEMD2 and CD47 for AvPC1, RPS6KA5/C14orf159 and GANAB for AvPC3, and ARL15 and ANP32 for AvPC4. Our findings highlight the value of using multiple traits to define complex phenotypes for discovery, which are not captured by single-trait analyses, and may shed light onto new pathways.

Abstract: To dissect the genetic architecture of blood pressure and assess effects on target organ damage, we analyzed 128,272 SNPs from targeted and genome-wide arrays in 201,529 individuals of European ancestry, and genotypes from an additional 140,886 individuals were used for validation. We identified 66 blood pressure–associated loci, of which 17 were new; 15 harbored multiple distinct association signals. The 66 index SNPs were enriched for cis-regulatory elements, particularly in vascular endothelial cells, consistent with a primary role in blood pressure control through modulation of vascular tone across multiple tissues. The 66 index SNPs combined in a risk score showed comparable effects in 64,421 individuals of non-European descent. The 66-SNP blood pressure risk score was significantly associated with target organ damage in multiple tissues but with minor effects in the kidney. Our findings expand current knowledge of blood pressure–related pathways and highlight tissues beyond the classical renal system in blood pressure regulation.

Abstract: GaAs-based quaternary ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga, Mn)(As, Sb) has been successfully prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the lattice constant has a notable alteration with changing Sb content. Magnetic measurements demonstrate the same evolution of the Curie temperature TC and the effective Mn content xeff with increasing Sb content. The incorporation of low Sb content is of benefit to increasing xeff, thus, increasing TC. However, higher Sb content degrades the crystal quality, resulting in a decrease of xeff. Experimental results show that TC is proportional to the product of xeff and p1/3, which is consistent with the Zener Model. The exchange energy N0β is calculated to be -1.09 eV, which is similar to that of (Ga, Mn)As. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: International audience; The Mn dopant distribution in ultrathin (20 nm) highly doped (nominal x = 0.20) Ga1-x Mn-x As epitaxial films with critical temperatures close to 175 K and magnetization of 100 emu/cm(3) is analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) in a random and channeling configuration. We could quantify the total concentration and the respective fraction of substitutional, interstitial, and random site Mn ions in as-grown and annealed samples. The measured total Mn concentration is x = 0.23. In the as-grown state 30% of the Mn dopant is located on interstitial sites. Thermal annealings at 180 degrees C for several hours monotonically reduce the interstitial Mn fraction to 11%. Simultaneously the fraction of randomly located Mn is increased by the same amount. The substitutional Mn concentration is stable under these annealing conditions. The effective Mn concentration could be increased to x = 0.13. However, the critical temperature does not increase proportionally with the magnetization. A comparison of the magnetization values demonstrates that the interstitial Mn ions are already incorporated during the growth in the form of Mn-Ga-Mn-i clusters.
