174. Spatial and temporal evolution of habitat quality and its shrinkage effect in shrinking cities: Evidence from Northeast China

Abstract

Continued population loss in the context of urban shrinkage has led to the transformation and reconfiguration of urban land use space, which in turn has had a major impact on regional habitats and ecosystem services. To explore the status of habitat quality (HQ) in shrinking cities, based on land use data from 2010 to 2020, this study uses the InVEST model to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of HQ in shrinking cities. Then, we reveal the shrinkage effect of HQ in shrinking cities from the perspective of population change rate, and detect the dominant influencing factors of HQ in different types of shrinking cities with the help of geographical detector. The results show that:(1) From 2010 to 2020, the primary land use types in both shrinking and non-shrinking cities of the three northeastern provinces were forestland and cropland. However, there were significant differences in the area of construction land between the two categories of cities. (2) The HQ in both shrinking and non-shrinking cities showed a declining trend, yet the HQ index of shrinking cities was higher than that of non-shrinking cities. (3) The distribution of HQ in shrinking cities has a significant shrinkage effect, and HQ index gradually strengthens as urban shrinkage intensifies. Low-quality habitats have a strong distributional advantage in slightly shrinking cities, while severely shrinking cities tend to be dominated by high-quality habitats. (4) Population profile, economic development, industrial structure and built environment are important factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of HQ in shrinking cities. However, the spatial determinants of HQ vary significantly among different types of shrinking cities in terms of dimensions and indicators, with two-factor interactions exerting a stronger influence than single-factor impacts. Based on the findings of this study, the government can formulate differentiated habitat protection measures, dynamically adjust, and optimize them according to the distribution characteristics of HQ grades in shrinking cities.

Abstract

Based on the accurate color excess $E_{\rm G_{BP},G_{RP}}$ of more than 4 million stars and $E_{\rm NUV,G_{BP}}$ of more than 1 million stars from \citet{2021ApJS..254...38S}, the distance and the extinction of the molecular clouds in the MBM catalog at $|b|>20^{\circ}$ are studied in combination with the distance measurement of \emph{Gaia}/EDR3. The distance as well as the color excess is determined for 66 molecular clouds. The color excess ratio $E_{\rm G_{BP},G_{RP}}/E_{\rm NUV,G_{BP}}$ is derived for 39 of them, which is obviously larger and implies more small particles at smaller extinction. 176. Review of Video Predictive Understanding: Early Action Recognition and Future Action Prediction

Abstract

Video predictive understanding encompasses a wide range of efforts that are concerned with the anticipation of the unobserved future from the current as well as historical video observations. Action prediction is a major sub-area of video predictive understanding and is the focus of this review. This sub-area has two major subdivisions: early action recognition and future action prediction. Early action recognition is concerned with recognizing an ongoing action as soon as possible. Future action prediction is concerned with the anticipation of actions that follow those previously observed. In either case, the \textbf{\textit{causal}} relationship between the past, current, and potential future information is the main focus. Various mathematical tools such as Markov Chains, Gaussian Processes, Auto-Regressive modeling, and Bayesian recursive filtering are widely adopted jointly with computer vision techniques for these two tasks. However, these approaches face challenges such as the curse of dimensionality, poor generalization, and constraints from domain-specific knowledge. Recently, structures that rely on deep convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks have been extensively proposed for improving the performance of existing vision tasks, in general, and action prediction tasks, in particular. However, they have their own shortcomings, \eg reliance on massive training data and lack of strong theoretical underpinnings. In this survey, we start by introducing the major sub-areas of the broad area of video predictive understanding, which recently have received intensive attention and proven to have practical value. Next, a thorough review of various early action recognition and future action prediction algorithms are provided with suitably organized divisions. Finally, we conclude our discussion with future research directions.

177. Interpretable Deep Feature Propagation for Early Action Recognition

Abstract

Early action recognition (action prediction) from limited preliminary observations plays a critical role for streaming vision systems that demand real-time inference, as video actions often possess elongated temporal spans which cause undesired latency. In this study, we address action prediction by investigating how action patterns evolve over time in a spatial feature space. There are three key components to our system. First, we work with intermediate-layer ConvNet features, which allow for abstraction from raw data, while retaining spatial layout. Second, instead of propagating features per se, we propagate their residuals across time, which allows for a compact representation that reduces redundancy. Third, we employ a Kalman filter to combat error build-up and unify across prediction start times. Extensive experimental results on multiple benchmarks show that our approach leads to competitive performance in action prediction. Notably, we investigate the learned components of our system to shed light on their otherwise opaque natures in two ways. First, we document that our learned feature propagation module works as a spatial shifting mechanism under convolution to propagate current observations into the future. Thus, it captures flow-based image motion information. Second, the learned Kalman filter adaptively updates prior estimation to aid the sequence learning process.

178. Visualizing nematic transition and nanoscale suppression of superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se)

Abstract

The interplay of different electronic phases underlies the physics of unconventional superconductors. One of the most intriguing examples is a high-Tc superconductor FeTe1-xSex: it undergoes both a topological transition, linked to the electronic band inversion, and an electronic nematic phase transition, associated with rotation symmetry breaking, around the same critical composition xc where superconducting Tc peaks. At this regime, nematic fluctuations and symmetry-breaking strain could have an enormous impact, but this is yet to be fully explored. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we study the electronic nematic transition in FeTe1-xSex as a function of composition. Near xc, we reveal the emergence of electronic nematicity in nanoscale regions. Interestingly, we discover that superconductivity is drastically suppressed in areas where static nematic order is the strongest. By analyzing atomic displacement in STM topographs, we find that small anisotropic strain can give rise to these strongly nematic localized regions. Our experiments reveal a tendency of FeTe1-xSex near x~0.45 to form puddles hosting static nematic order, suggestive of nematic fluctuations pinned by structural inhomogeneity, and demonstrate a pronounced effect of anisotropic strain on superconductivity in this regime., Comment: This is the original submitted version. 179. Clinical significance of chromatic pupillometry in evaluating visual function in blind patients with retinitis pigmentosa

Abstract

Objective To study the feasibility and effectiveness of quantitative evaluation of retinal function in blind patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) by chromatic pupillometry. Methods A total of 46 blind RP patients (81 eyes) who met the legal blindness standard admitted in our department from January 2022 to December 2022 were recruited in this study.According to their best-corrected visual acuity, they were divided into the no form perception (NFP) group, faint form perception (FFP) group, and form perception (FP) group.Another 18 healthy volunteers (18 eyes) were enrolled as controls.The subjects received routine ophthalmic examinations such as color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and flash visual evoked potential (FVEP).The thickness of the outer nuclear layer of OCT, vertical diameter of the FAF high fluorescence area, and amplitude of FVEP P2 were collected.Then chromatic pupillometry was performed.The light stimulation mode of low-intensity blue light was conducted to activate rods, and of high-intensity red light to activate cones.The evaluation indexes included transient pupil construction amplitude (TPCA), latency, maximal contraction velocity (MCV), and contraction duration. Results Under the mode of low-intensity blue light stimulation, more than half of the blind RP patients had rods pupil light reaction disappeared.Under the mode of high-intensity red light stimulation, the blind RP patients though retained pupil response of cone cells to light mostly but the response was significantly weakened.Compared with the control group, the TPCA and MCV of the cones'pupillary responses were significantly lower (P < 0.05), and the contraction latency was obviously higher (P < 0.05) in all RP blind groups.The NFP group had significantly lower TPCA and MCV and higher contraction latency when compared with the FP group (both P < 0.05).Positively correlations were observed in the TPCA and MCV of the cones'pupillary responses with the thickness of the outer nuclear layer of the retina, the vertical diameter of autofluorescence, and the amplitude of the FVEP P2 wave, respectively (P < 0.05).The latency of contraction was significantly negatively correlated with the thickness of the outer nuclear layer of the retina and the amplitude of FVEP P2 wave (P < 0.05). Conclusion Chromatic pupillometry can quantitatively distinguish the difference in retinal function between blind RP patients with and without formal perceptual vision.The changes in chromatic pupillometric results are consistent with the changes in retinal morphology and function.

Abstract

Ex situ conservation involves the maintenance and reproduction of species in areas outside their natural habitats. Seed banking is a well-established ex situ approach used for plant conservation. Seed banking consists of collecting, drying, and storing seeds to preserve genetic diversity. The main limitation of this technique is that the seed must be desiccation tolerant. Seed storage behaviour can vary among species, and for some species, drying without loss of viability is not possible, meaning storage under conventional seed banking conditions (sub-zero temperatures and low relative humidity) is not possible. Understanding seed storage behaviour is an essential prerequisite for establishing whether conventional seed banking is an option for seed conservation. This study investigated the desiccation tolerance and sensitivity of mature seeds of two native New Zealand species of Pittosporum (P. eugenioides and P. crassifolium) from two geographic locations (Palmerston North and Wellington), with the aim of understanding their seed storage behaviour and thereby improving conservation outcomes. The variables measured were seed moisture content, viability, germination, and desiccation responses. We developed sorption isotherm for both species to support the future development of storage protocols. Our results show that both P. eugenioides and P. crassifolium display non-orthodox behaviour, i.e., are desiccation sensitive and cannot be stored under conventional seed banking conditions, but also suggest that seed desiccation responses vary with the geographical origin of the seeds. This study highlights the importance of exploring seed storage behaviour using different populations to optimize ex situ conservation strategies aimed at preserving the genetic diversity of New Zealand’s threatened and endangered species.
