We investigate the ground state properties of an equal mixture of two species of bosons in its Mott-insulator phase at a filling factor two per site. We identify one type of spin triplet-singlet transition through the competition of ground state. When the on-site interaction is weak ($UU_c$), higher band will be populated. Due to the orbital coupling term $S^+S^-$ in the Hamiltonian, the two atoms in different orbits on a site would form an on-site singlet. For a non-SU(2)-symmetric model, easy-axis or easy-plane ferromagnetic spin exchange models may be realized corresponding to phase separation or counter-flow superfluidity, respectively., Comment: Final version in PRA

We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization of the F=1 spinor condensate interacting through dipole-dipole interaction with an external magnetic field applied along the longitudinal or transverse direction. We show that the ground state energy and the effective magnetic moment of the system exhibit an interesting macroscopic quantum oscillation phenomenon originating from the oscillating dependence of thermodynamic properties of the system on the vacuum angle. We investigate the ground state of the system of N bosons enclosed in a hard-wall trap interacting via a repulsive or attractive $\delta$-function potential. Based on the Bethe ansatz method, the explicit ground state wave function is derived and the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations are solved numerically for the full physical regime from the Tonks limit to the strongly attractive limit. It is shown that the solution takes different form in different regime. We also evaluate the one body density matrix and second-order correlation function of the ground state for finite systems. In the Tonks limit the density profiles display the Fermi-like behavior, while in the strongly attractive limit the Bosons form a bound state of N atoms corresponding to the N-string solution. The density profiles show the continuous crossover behavior in the entire regime. We investigate the effect of the anisotropic spin-spin interaction on the ground state density distribution of the one dimensional spin-1 bosonic gases within a modified Gross-Pitaevskii theory both in the weakly interaction regime and in the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime. We find that for ferromagnetic spinor gas the phase separation occurs even for weak anisotropy of the spin-spin interaction, which becomes more and more obvious and the component of $m_F=0$ diminishes as the anisotropy increases. However, no phase separation is found for anti-ferromagnetic spinor gas in both regimes., Comment: 5pages, 4 figures

We numerically evaluate the density distribution of a spin-1 bosonic condensate in its ground state within a modifed Gross-Pitaevskii theory, which is obtained by the combination of the exact solution of the corresponding integrable model with the local density approximation. Our study reveals that atoms in the m_F = 0 state are almost completely suppressed for the anti-ferromagnetic interactions in both weakly and strongly interacting regimes, whereas all three components remain non-vanishing for ferromagnetic interactions. Specially, when the system is in the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime, obvious Fermi-like distribution emerges for each component. We study the semiclassical dynamics of a spinor condensate with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction included. The time evolution of the population imbalance and the relative phase among different spin components depends greatly on the relative strength of interactions as well as on the initial conditions. The interplay of spin exchange and dipole-dipole interaction makes it possible to manipulate the atomic population on different components, leading to the phenomena of spontaneous magnetization and Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping. Simple estimate demonstrates that these effects are accessible and controllable by modifying the geometry of the trapping potential., Comment: 13 pages,3 figures

The low-energy-level macroscopic wave functions of the Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) trapped in a symmetric double-well and a periodic potential are obtained by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. The ground state tunnel splitting is evaluated in terms of the even and odd wave functions corresponding to the global ground and excited states respectively. We show that the numerical result is in good agreement with the analytic level splitting obtained by means of the periodic instanton method., Comment: 22 pages,7 figures

We apply the homotopy group theory in classifying the topological defects in atomic spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates. The nature of the defects depends crucially on the spin-spin interaction between the atoms. We find the topologically stable defects both for spin-1 ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic states, and for spin-2 ferromagnetic and cyclic states. With this rigorous approach we clarify the previously controversial identification of symmetry groups and order parameter spaces for the spin-1 anti-ferromagnetic state, and show that the spin-2 cyclic case provides a rare example of a physical system with non-Abelian line defects, like those observed in biaxial nematics. The energy band structure and energy splitting due to quantum tunneling in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates were calculated by using the instanton method. The intrinsic coherent properties of Bose Josephson junction were investigated in terms of energy splitting. For $E_{C}/E_{J}\ll 1$, the energy splitting is small and the system is globally phase coherent. In the opposite limit, $E_{C}/E_{J}\gg 1$, the energy splitting is large and the system becomes a phase dissipation. Our reslults suggest that one should investigate the coherence phenomna of BJJ in proper condition such as $E_{C}/E_{J}\sim 1$., Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. A, 2 figures

The tunneling rate of a skyrmion in ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Bose condensates through an off-centered potential barrier is calculated exactly with the periodic instanton method. The prefactor is shown to depend on the chemical potential of the core atoms, at which level the atom tunnels. An instanton method is proposed to investigate the quantum tunneling between two weakly-linked Bose-Einstein condensates confined in double-well potential traps. We point out some intrinsic pathologies in the earlier treatments of other authors and make an effort to go beyond these very simple zero order models. The tunneling amplitude may be calculated in the Thomas-Fermi approximation and beyond it; we find it depends on the number of the trapped atoms, through the chemical potential. A recent analytic test of the instanton method performed by comparing the exact spectrum of the Lam${\acute e}$ potential (derived from representations of a finite dimensional matrix expressed in terms of $su(2)$ generators) with the results of the tight--binding and instanton approximations as well as the standard WKB approximation is commented upon. A new method is used to investigate the tunneling between two weakly-linked Bose-Einstein condensates confined in double-well potential traps. The nonlinear interaction between the atoms in each well contributes to a finite chemical potential, which, with consideration of periodic instantons, leads to a remarkably high tunneling frequency. This result can be used to interpret the newly found Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping (MQST) effect. It has recently been shown that the equation of motion of a massless scalar field in the background of some specific p branes can be reduced to a modified Mathieu equation. In the following the absorption rate of the scalar by a D3 brane in ten dimensions is calculated in terms of modified Mathieu functions of the first kind, using standard Mathieu coefficients. The relation of the latter to Dougall coefficients (used by others) is investigated. The S-matrix obtained in terms of modified Mathieu functions of the first kind is easily evaluated if known rapidly convergent low energy expansions of these in terms of products of Bessel functions are used.
