171. An Investigation of Chinese EFL Learners' Perceived Comprehensibility of Nine English Accents

Abstract

With the emergence of different varieties of English in the world, the issue of intelligibility has attracted many researchers' attention. While a large number of studies have focused on the intelligibility of different English varieties for native speakers, few of them have involved Chinese learners of English as participants; yet, they constitute the largest group of non-native English speakers. The current study aims to investigate Chinese university students' perceived comprehensibility, i.e., intelligibility judgments, of nine English accents, including British, American, Australian, Indian, Philippine, Singaporean, French, Japanese, and South Korean English. Thirty-nine English major sophomores from a top university in China were invited to identify the speakers' nationalities and assign ratings for their perceived comprehensibility of the nine English accents. A follow-up semi-structured interview was also undertaken. It was found that all of the participants could identify American English and most of them could also recognize British, Australian and South Korean English. In contrast, they could hardly recognize the other five English accents. With regard to perceived comprehensibility, the Inner Circle English accents on the whole are significantly more comprehensible than the Outer Circle and Expanding Circle English accents. Chinese university students' perceived comprehensibility significantly correlates with properties of the speech. Moreover, it was observed that familiarity with English accents and speech properties may interplay and influence perceived comprehensibility. The study contributes to the ongoing literature on intelligibility and provides pedagogical implications for English education.

Abstract

In this paper, firstly, we study the reinforcement learning algorithm, which is a related technology of knowledge graph, and use reinforcement learning to structure the application framework of health care knowledge graph and construct the domain dictionary. And based on the BitLab21 dataset, entity relationship annotation is performed on the named entity recognition result set to realize entity relationship extraction of clinical electronic medical records. Then, the HacRED dataset is used to evaluate the deep learning model, and comparison tests and ablation experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of reinforcement learning for constructing knowledge graphs, respectively. Finally, a deviation monitoring method and a data feature extraction method for the case dataset are proposed, and a comparative study of different feature extraction methods is conducted to illustrate the advantages of feature fusion in distinguishing abnormal deviation patterns. All three features have relatively good recognition accuracy for normal patterns, which can reach 100%. The error curves perform well, and their training and testing errors converge very quickly to below 0.01 with less than 5 iterations and achieve nearly 100% recognition accuracy. Reinforcement learning-based knowledge mapping of case datasets and feature fusion-based data machine bias detection can improve the efficiency of medical detection.

Abstract

This study is concerned with a family of parabolic system with general singular nonlinearities, which is a generalization of MEMS system. To some extent, the classification of global existence and quenching according to parameters and initial data is given. Moreover, the convergence rate is also obtained. We point out that compared to single MEMS equation, new ideas and techniques are introduced in obtaining the convergence rate for system in our study. In fact, due to the lack of variational characterization for the first eigenvalue of the linearized elliptic system, the methods in obtaining convergence rate for single equation cannot work completely here., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure
