Abstract

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising in stationary grid energy storage due to their advantages in safety and cost-effectiveness, and the search for competent cathode materials is one core task in the development of ZIBs. Herein, the authors design a 2D heterostructure combining amorphous vanadium pentoxide and electrochemically produced graphene oxide (EGO) using a fast and scalable spray drying technique. The unique 2D heterostructured xerogel is achieved by controlling the concentration of EGO in the precursor solution. Driven by the improved electrochemical kinetics, the resultant xerogel can deliver an excellent rate capability (334 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1) as well as a high specific capacity (462 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1) as the cathode material in ZIB. It is also shown that the coin cell constructed based on spray-dried xerogel can output steady, high energy densities over a broad power density window. This work provides a scalable and cost-effective approach for making high performance electrode materials from cheap sources through existing industrialized materials processing.

181. Discovering Novel Materials for Smart Windows via First-Principles Calculations

Abstract

Currently, achieving carbon neutrality is a historical global concern, including China 2060 and USA 2050, which refers to a dynamic balance between carbon emissions and carbon fixation. To address these concerns, human society is not only promoting the scale of artificial carbon sinks but also reducing carbon emissions. The latter plays a vital position in achieving carbon neutrality, necessitating high-efficiency energy consumption. Among the key drivers of energy consumption, buildings consume approximately 40%, more energy than the industry and transportation sectors. Half of building energy is used in ventilation and temperature control (heating and cooling for buildings), making it the largest unrealized cost-effective emission savings. The main reason is that traditional windows allow heat transfer in an undesirable direction that helps buildings gain heat in summer and release heat in winter. Moreover, the traditional daylighting control solutions, i.e., blinds, lead to the commonplace occurrence of closing blinds and lights on, with poor daylight utilization and more electric energy consumption. Smart windows, which can regulate illumination in buildings and heat exchange with the environment, are regarded as the ideal solution of this problem. The most widely used and investigated smart windows are based on electrochromism, with few researchers focusing on the unconventional ones based on mechanochromism. Electrochromism refers to the reversible and persistent changes of colour, transmittance, or other optical properties through electrochemical redox reactions under applied voltages. A typical electrochromic device is essentially a battery with electrochromic materials as electrodes. Our first two research chapters report electrochromic effects in traditional inorganic anode and cathode materials, namely LTO and TiS2, respectively. 183. Cocatalyst Engineering with Robust Tunable Carbon‐Encapsulated Mo‐Rich Mo/Mo2C Heterostructure Nanoparticle for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Abstract

Cocatalyst engineering with non‐noble metal nanomaterials can play a vital role in low‐cost, sustainable, and large‐scale photocatalytic hydrogen production. This research adopts slow carburization and simultaneous hydrocarbon reduction to synthesize carbon‐encapsulated Mo/Mo2C heterostructure nanoparticles, namely Mo/Mo2C@C cocatalyst. Experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that the Mo/Mo2C@C cocatalysts have a nearly ideal hydrogen‐adsorption free energy (ΔGH*), which results in the accelerated HER kinetics. As such, the cocatalysts are immobilized onto organic polymer semiconductor g‐C3N4 and inorganic semiconductor CdS, resulting in Mo/Mo2C@C/g‐C3N4 and Mo/Mo2C@C/CdS catalysts, respectively. In photocatalytic hydrogen evolution application under visible light, the Mo/Mo2C@C with g‐C3N4 and CdS can form the Schottky junctions via appropriate band alignment, greatly suppressing the recombination of photoinduced electron‐hole pairs. The surface carbon layer as the conducting scaffolds and Mo metal facilitates electron transfer and electron‐hole separation, favoring structural stability and offering more reaction sites and interfaces as electron mediators. As a result, these catalysts exhibit high H2 production rates of 2.7 mmol h−1 g−1 in basic solution and 98.2 mmol h−1 g−1 in acidic solution, respectively, which is significantly higher than that of the bench‐mark Pt‐containing catalyst. Abstract

Electrochromic effect has been discovered in many materials with a wide range of applications from visible to infrared, such as smart windows, electronic displays, infrared camouflage, and color‐changeable tactile sensor. However, conventional electrochromic materials cannot meet the growing demand for electrochromic performance in terms of optical contrast, response time, durability, color diversity, and flexibility, which slows down developments in this area. This is mainly due to the limited number and variety of electrochromic materials. In strong contrast, nanoarchitectonics of 2D materials with atomically thin thickness, large lateral size, and diversified series can be an effective way to address these issues and improve the electrochromic performances. This review highlights the recent achievements of emerging 2D electrochromic materials, namely covalent organic frameworks, coordination nanosheets, and transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides (MXenes). The structures, electrochromic performances and their structure–performance relationship, and future challenges of these materials have been systematically explored. This review can pave a new avenue for the promotion of the nanoarchitectonic 2D materials for the up‐scaled practical electrochromic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
