153. Government regulation of emergency supplies under the epidemic crisis

Abstract

This paper constructs a multi-oligopoly model of emergency supplies and analyses the market equilibrium results under normal conditions and epidemic conditions. The impacts of the degree of change in market demand, externalities, the material cost of emergency supplies and government regulation on the equilibrium results, especially on the prices of emergency supplies, are discussed. The results show that an increase in material cost will lead to low output and social welfare and a high price, under either normal conditions or epidemic conditions. Moreover, under epidemic conditions, the degree of change in market demand, externalities, material cost and the presence and mode of government regulation all have multiple and complex influences on the equilibrium results. Under epidemic conditions, both government output and price regulation can increase the supply of emergency supplies. In addition, when market demand changes drastically, consumer surplus and social welfare can be enhanced by the implementation of regulations. Particularly, price regulation is more effective when there is a high material cost.

Abstract

Mixed views on automated trading in the extant literature lead to ongoing debates on algorithmic trading (AT) and high-frequency trading (HFT). This study elaborates on the rising ethical issues and regulatory challenges of algorithmic trading and high-frequency trading in emerging markets. While developed capital markets are dominated by institutional investors, emerging markets consist of a large proportion of retail investors who may suffer from aggravated liquidity asymmetry and stock price turbulence due to HFT and AT. Furthermore, we review current regulations of HFT in the U.S. and European markets and provide a framework of regulatory enforcements on AT and HFT for investor protection in emerging markets. This study cautions policymakers in emerging markets that legal and regulatory monitoring of AT and HFT activities is especially necessary.

Abstract

Machine learning (ML) is an efficient tool for the prediction of bioactivity and the study of structure–activity relationships. Over the past decade, an emerging trend for combining these approaches with the study of natural products (NPs) has developed in order to manage the challenge of the discovery of bioactive NPs. In the present review, we will introduce the basic principles and protocols for using the ML approach to investigate the bioactivity of NPs, citing a series of practical examples regarding the study of anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory NPs, etc. ML algorithms manage a variety of classification and regression problems associated with bioactive NPs, from those that are linear to non-linear and from pure compounds to plant extracts. Inspired by cases reported in the literature and our own experience, a number of key points have been emphasized for reducing modeling errors, including dataset preparation and applicability domain analysis.

176. Solution combustion growth of porous ZnMn2O4on carbon cloth to enhance zinc ions storage performance

Abstract

As a positive electrode material for zinc ions storage, the large-scale application of ZnMn2O4is severely impeded by its low conductivity and inferior cyclic durability. In this study, porous ZnMn2O4was successfully grown on carbon cloth (ZnMn2O4@CC) for the first time using a solution combustion strategy. In the proposed combustion system, zinc nitrate and manganous nitrate were used as the oxidizing agents, while glucose served as the fuel. The in-situ growth of porous ZnMn2O4on carbon fiber resulted in a binder-free electrode, with a coaxial core-shell architecture, improving both the structure stability and the electrode's conductivity. Compared to ZnMn2O4powder, the zinc ions storage performance of ZnMn2O4@CC was significantly enhanced. The ZnMn2O4@CC delivered a 1st discharge-specific capacity of 281.7 mAh g−1at 100 mA g−1, with 112.2 mAh g−1of capacity at 500 mA g−1after 300 cycles. The fabricated ZnMn2O4, with a large specific surface and plentiful mesopores, facilitated the wetting and penetration of the electrolyte. In addition, the porous feature can buffer the stress during the charging and discharging processes, enhancing specific capacity and cycle ability. This work not only introduces a novel method for preparing binder-free electrodes but also explores the potential application of such electrodes in zinc-ion batteries.

177. A long-life Li-S battery enabled by a cathode made of well-distributed B4C nanoparticles decorated activated cotton fibers

Abstract

The commercialization of Li-S batteries is impeded by their short lifespan and poor rate capability resulting from the shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, we develop a bi-functional cathode substrate for Li-S batteries made of well-distributed boron carbide nanoparticles decorated activated cotton fiber (B4C-ACF), in which B4C nanoparticles serve as not only robust chemically anchoring sites to trap the polysulfides, but also afford abundant active sites for efficient sulfur conversion reactions. Meanwhile, the ACF network provides fast electron pathways for the conversion reactions and acts as the current collector. As a result, the novel cathode substrate enables a Li-S battery to deliver an initial capacity of as high as 1415 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, and an extrahigh reversible capacity of 928 mAh g(-1) at 3 C with an areal sulfur loading of 3.0 mg cm(-2). More strikingly, the B4C-ACF substrate-based battery could be stably operated for 3000 cycles with a high coulombic efficiency of 99.24% and a capacity decay rate of as low as 0.012% per cycle at 1 C, demonstrating that the B4C-ACF substrate holds great potential in realizing the mass production of advanced Li-S batteries.

Abstract

Most social species self-organize into dominance hierarchies1,2, which decreases aggression and conserves energy3,4, but it is not clear how individuals know their social rank. We have only begun to learn how the brain represents social rank5–9 and guides behaviour on the basis of this representation. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is involved in social dominance in rodents7,8 and humans10,11. Yet, precisely how the mPFC encodes relative social rank and which circuits mediate this computation is not known. We developed a social competition assay in which mice compete for rewards, as well as a computer vision tool (AlphaTracker) to track multiple, unmarked animals. A hidden Markov model combined with generalized linear models was able to decode social competition behaviour from mPFC ensemble activity. Population dynamics in the mPFC predicted social rank and competitive success. Finally, we demonstrate that mPFC cells that project to the lateral hypothalamus promote dominance behaviour during reward competition. Thus, we reveal a cortico-hypothalamic circuit by which the mPFC exerts top-down modulation of social dominance.Analyses of neural activity of mice competing in a social competition assay monitored by a computer vision tool reveal a neural circuit with a role in dynamically modulating social dominance. Abstract

There has been increasing interest in the emerging ionic thermoelectric materials with huge ionic thermopower. However, it's challenging to selectively tune the thermopower of all-solid-state polymer materials because the transportation of ions in all-solid-state polymers is much more complex than those of liquid-dominated gels. Herein, this work provides all-solid-state polymer materials with a wide tunable thermopower range (+20~−6 mV K−1), which is different from previously reported gels. Moreover, the mechanism of p-n conversion in all-solid-state ionic thermoelectric polymer material at the atomic scale was presented based on the analysis of Eastman entropy changes by molecular dynamics simulation, which provides a general strategy for tuning ionic thermopower and is beneficial to understand the fundamental mechanism of the p-n conversion. Furthermore, a self-powered ionic thermoelectric thermal sensor fabricated by the developed p- and n-type polymers demonstrated high sensitivity and durability, extending the application of ionic thermoelectric materials. Though high ionic thermopower and p-n conversion has been realized in liquid ionic thermoelectric materials, achieving similar performance in solid-state polymer materials remains a challenge. Abstract

Shale gas reservoirs are typical unconventional natural gas resources characterized by low porosity and low permeability of the formation. To enhance production and provide an economically justified production rate, the multi-stage fractured horizontal well (MFHW) technology has been widely used in shale gas reservoirs. More attention has been paid recently to studying the mechanism of multi-scale flow in shale. However, the mechanism of gas seepage in shale in a multi-stage fractured horizontal well has not been systematically discussed. In the previously published conventional studies, the authors have not presented a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption, desorption, and diffusion mechanisms participating in gas seepage, particularly within a linear flow model. In this paper, the linear superposition method is applied to describe the non-Darcy flow behavior in nano/micro-scale pores and the Darcy flow behavior in macropores and natural/induced fractures in a shale matrix. Based on the flow mode, the shale reservoir and the area around the multi-stage fractured horizontal well are divided into three zones: the outer region flow, the inner region flow, and the flow in the hydraulic fractures. Based on the trilinear flow model, the authors consider the differences in properties between the initial shale reservoir and the induced fracture network of the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). In this model, the dimensionless variables, Duhamel principle, and numerical Stehfest algorithm are combined to analyze the dynamic bottomhole pressure, adsorption-desorption behavior, multi-scale flow mechanism, and complex SRV geometry in the MFHW area.
