174. Research progress of modified metal current collectors in sodium metal anodes

Abstract

Sodium metal has been widely studied in the field of batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity (∼1,166 mAh/g), low redox potential (-2.71 V compared to standard hydrogen electrode), and low-cost advantages. However, problems such as unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), uncontrolled dendrite growth, and side reactions between solid-liquid interfaces have hindered the practical application of sodium metal anodes (SMAs). Currently, lots of strategies have been developed to achieve stabilized sodium metal anodes. Among these strategies, modified metal current collectors (MCCs) stand out due to their unique role in accommodating volumetric fluctuations with superior structure, lowering the energy barrier for sodium nucleation, and providing guided uniform sodium deposition. In this review, we first introduced three common metal-based current collectors applied to SMAs. Then, we summarized strategies to improve sodium deposition behavior by optimally engineering the surface of MCCs, including surface loading, surface structural design, and surface engineering for functional modification. We have followed the latest research progress and summarized surface optimization cases on different MCCs and their applications in battery systems.

Abstract

Prion diseases are caused by the misfolding of prion protein (PrP). Misfolded PrP forms protease-resistant aggregates in vivo (PrPSc) that are able to template the conversion of the native form of the protein (PrPC), a property shared by in vitro–produced PrP fibrils. Here we produced amyloid fibrils in vitro from recombinant, full-length human PrPC(residues 23–231) and determined their structure using cryo-EM, building a model for the fibril core comprising residues 170−229. The PrP fibril consists of two protofibrils intertwined in a left-handed helix. Lys194 and Glu196 from opposing subunits form salt bridges, creating a hydrophilic cavity at the interface of the two protofibrils. By comparison with the structure of PrPC, we propose that two α-helices in the C-terminal domain of PrPCare converted into β-strands stabilized by a disulfide bond in the PrP fibril. Our data suggest that different PrP mutations may play distinct roles in modulating the conformational conversion.

Abstract

Cryptochromes (CRYs) are blue-light receptors in plants that harbor FAD as a cofactor and regulate various physiological responses. Photoactivated CRYs undergo oligomerization, which increases the binding affinity to downstream signaling partners. Despite decades of research on the activation of CRYs, little is known about how they are inactivated. Binding of blue-light inhibitors of cryptochromes (BICs) to CRY2 suppresses its photoactivation, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we report crystal structures of CRY2N (CRY2 PHR domain) and the BIC2–CRY2N complex with resolutions of 2.7 and 2.5 Å, respectively. In the BIC2–CRY2N complex, BIC2 exhibits an extremely extended structure that sinuously winds around CRY2N. In this way, BIC2 not only restrains the transfer of electrons and protons from CRY2 to FAD during photoreduction but also interacts with the CRY2 oligomer to return it to the monomer form. Uncovering the mechanism of CRY2 inactivation lays a solid foundation for the investigation of cryptochrome protein function.

Abstract

Use of growth retardants enables post-planting optimization of vegetative growth, which is particularly important given ongoing climate change. Mepiquat chloride is an economical and safe retardant widely applied in cotton farming, but it is not uniformly effective. Here, identification of its molecular target as the ent-copalyl diphosphate synthase that initiates gibberellin biosynthesis enabled the introduction of selective agrochemical inhibition, leaving intact more specialized metabolism important for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Abstract

Nitrochlorobenzene compounds (NCBs) are of key interest in environmental monitoring due to their high toxicity. To better understand the presence and fate of NCBs in aquatic environments, an in-situ sampling technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) based on hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced (HLB) resin, combined with gas chromatography, was developed to measure four typical NCBs, e.g. meta-chloronitrobenzene (MNCB), para-chloronitrobenzene (PNCB), ortho-chloronitrobenzene (ONCB), and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (CDNB). The diffusion coefficients of MNCB, PNCB, ONCB, and CDNB in agarose-based gel were firstly determined in diffusion cell experiments and ranged from 7.19 × 10−6 to 7.49 × 10−6 cm/s. The capacities of HLB-DGT for MNCB, PNCB, ONCB, and CDNB were higher than 114.65, 117.52, 117.72, and 37.58 μg/cm2, respectively. The HLB-DGT performance on NCBs determination was demonstrated to be independent of natural fluctuations in pH (3–9), ionic strength (0.001–0.5 M), and dissolved organic matter concentrations (0–20 mg/L) and of deployment time (0–120 h). In the field application, the DGT-based method to measure NCBs not only proved to be accurate and effective, but also performed better than the grab sampling method under the variable conditions. This study demonstrates that the newly developed in-situ method based on DGT can provide an attractive alternative for the routine monitoring of NCBs in aquatic environments. 196. Solution structure of the RNA recognition domain of METTL3-METTL14 N6-methyladenosine methyltransferase.

Abstract

N6-methyladenosine (m6A), a ubiquitous RNA modification, is installed by METTL3-METTL14 complex. The structure of the heterodimeric complex between the methyltransferase domains (MTDs) of METTL3 and METTL14 has been previously determined. However, the MTDs alone possess no enzymatic activity. Here we present the solution structure for the zinc finger domain (ZFD) of METTL3, the inclusion of which fulfills the methyltransferase activity of METTL3-METTL14. We show that the ZFD specifically binds to an RNA containing 5′-GGACU-3′ consensus sequence, but does not to one without. The ZFD thus serves as the target recognition domain, a structural feature previously shown for DNA methyltransferases, and cooperates with the MTDs of METTL3-METTL14 for catalysis. However, the interaction between the ZFD and the specific RNA is extremely weak, with the binding affinity at several hundred micromolar under physiological conditions. The ZFD contains two CCCH-type zinc fingers connected by an anti-parallel β-sheet. Mutational analysis and NMR titrations have mapped the functional interface to a contiguous surface. As a division of labor, the RNA-binding interface comprises basic residues from zinc finger 1 and hydrophobic residues from β-sheet and zinc finger 2. Further we show that the linker between the ZFD and MTD of METTL3 is flexible but partially folded, which may permit the cooperation between the two domains during catalysis. Together, the structural characterization of METTL3 ZFD paves the way to elucidate the atomic details of the entire process of RNA m6A modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The impact of hot bending forming process on the high-temperature mechanical properties and hydrogen damage of 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive spectrum (EDS) and the slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test in high-temperature hydrogen environment. The samples containing hot bending residual influence were extracted from a real hydrogenation reactor shell fabricated through hot bending-welding process. SEM images of the material demonstrated that the density and size of carbides in 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V increased after forming. TEM and EDS results revealed that ferrite matrix of the formed material was purified. The mechanical properties measured by SSRT test manifested that 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V was softened after forming. Moreover, it was observed that high-temperature hydrogen environment embrittled the material and the susceptibility to hydrogen damage increased after forming. The role of hot bending process on the evolution of mechanical properties and hydrogen damage susceptibility was discussed. Possible mechanism for the impact of hot bending process on the high-temperature hydrogen damage was proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

198. Influence of surface acoustic wave (SAW) on nanoscale in-plane magnetic tunnel junctions.

Abstract

The use of voltage induced strain to switch magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is a promising solution for reducing the switching energy in MRAM technologies. The MTJ is integrated with a piezoelectric layer to generate the strain. A very thin layer is needed to switch with small voltages and small energy dissipation. It is challenging to synthesize ultrathin piezoelectric layers that retain a high degree of piezoelectricity. An alternate approach is to use time-varying strain generated by a surface acoustic wave (SAW). This approach does not require a thin piezoelectric layer since the SAW is confined to the surface of the layer. In this study, we fabricated in-plane MTJs on piezoelectric LiNbO3 substrates and used IDTs to generate the SAW signal within the substrate. Our results showed that the SAW signal had a significant influence on the resistance and the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio of the MTJs. The influence was much less significant in nanometer size MTJs than in micrometer sized ones. Most surprisingly, the SAW signal caused the tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (TMR) to drop below zero for the micrometer size MTJ, meaning that the antiparallel resistance RAP is temporarily less than the parallel resistance RP under SAW excitation. Our results provide insight into the dynamic behavior of MTJs under periodic strain and the dependence of this behavior on the device dimensions as they are scaled down to nanometer sizes.
