Background: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is an asymptomatic intestinal disorder associated with growth impairment, delayed neurocognitive development, and impaired oral vaccine responses., Objectives: We set out to develop and validate a histopathologic scoring system on duodenal biopsies from a cohort study of children with growth failure in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Zambia ("EED") with reference to biopsies from United States children with no clinically reported histologic pathology (referred to hereafter as "normal") or celiac disease., Methods: Five gastrointestinal pathologists evaluated 745 hematoxylin and eosin slide images from 291 children with EED (mean age: 1.6 y) and 66 United States children (mean age: 6.8 y). Histomorphologic features (i.e., villus/crypt architecture, goblet cells, epithelial and lamina propria acute/chronic inflammation, Brunner's glands, Paneth cells, epithelial detachment, enterocyte injury, and foveolar metaplasia) were used to score each histopathologic slide. Generalized estimating equations were used to determine differences between EED, normal, and celiac disease, and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess predictive value., Results: Biopsies from the duodenal bulb showed higher intramucosal Brunner's gland scores and lower intraepithelial lymphocyte scores than from the second or third parts of the duodenum (D2/3), so only D2/3 were included in the final analysis. Although 7 parameters differed significantly between EED and normal biopsies in regression models, only 5 (blunted villus architecture, increased intraepithelial lymphocytosis, goblet cell depletion, Paneth cell depletion, and reduced intramucosal Brunner's glands) were required to create a total score percentage (TSP-5) that correctly identified EED against normal biopsies (AUC: 0.992; 95% CI: 0.983, 0.998). Geographic comparisons showed more severe goblet cell depletion in Bangladesh and more marked intraepithelial lymphocytosis in Pakistan., Conclusions: This scoring system involving 5 histologic parameters demonstrates very high discrimination between EED and normal biopsies, indicating that this scoring system can be applied with confidence to studies of intestinal biopsies in EED., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of anti-interleukin (IL)-1/-6 biologics on systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA)-associated macrophage activation syndrome (MAS)., Methods: Demographic, clinical and laboratory data of patients followed up with a diagnosis of sJIA-associated MAS assessed from sixteen paediatric rheumatology centres across the country. The clinical and laboratory features of MAS developing while on biological drugs were compared with those without this treatment., Results: One hundred and sixty-two patients were included in the study. Forty-five of the MAS events were detected under the effect of anti-IL-1/-6 biologics, while the patients experiencing the remaining 155 events have not received biological treatment in the last three months. Platelet count [128 (72-232) vs 199 (130-371) 109/l], ferritin level on admission [1107 (676-2050) vs 2863 (1193-9562) ng/ml], C-reactive protein level [15.4 (2.9-56) vs 90 (32-160) mg/l], erythrocyte sedimentation rate [13 (3-36) vs 43.5 (13-77) mm/h] and fever duration [5 (4-7.5) vs 10 (7-14.3) days] were found lower in the group under the impact of anti-IL-1/-6 biologics. Among patients treated with biologics, 26.6% did not meet the published 2016 MAS classification criteria at presentation. The rates of hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were relatively lower in the canakinumab-treated group when compared with those receiving other biologicals or to patients, not on biologicals., Conclusion: Anti-IL-1/-6 therapies can mask the clinical and laboratory features of MAS, and proposed guidelines for MAS classification criteria may not be met., (© The Author(s) 2024. Lavender honey is one of the most desirable blossom honeys for its unique taste and aromatic qualities and can vary significantly from one region to another. In this study, melissopalynological, physicochemical and antioxidant properties of lavender honey from the Isparta region of Türkiye were investigated. The ration of the Lavandula spp. pollen were identified ranging from 9 % to 76 % in the thirteen samples. The average pH, conductivity, moisture, Hunter Lab* and proline values were 3.72, 0.22 mS/cm, 17.17 %, L*: 66.56, a*: 66.32, b*:18.41 and 576.92 mg/kg, respectively. The average F+G and F/G were 67.66 % and 1.02, respectively. The average of total phenolic (TP) and flavonoid (TF) substance were found to be 39.40 mg GAE/100 g and 3.23 mg QUE/100 g, respectively. The average total antioxidant capacity (FRAP) and DPPH radical scavenging activity values were found to be 178.28 μmol FeSO 4  ⋅ 7H 2 O/100 g and 53.09 mg/mL, respectively. In the phenolic component analysis performed with HPLC-PDA, p-OH-benzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, chrysin and pinocembrin were detected as common polyphenols in the samples. To accurately evaluate dietary intake, multiple resources are necessary, including serving-size modules, pictures, and questionnaires that are used to gather information during surveys. One critical component is the accessibility of food composition data at the national or regional level, which is required to determine dietary intake. Food Agriculture Organization/International Network of Food Data Systems (FAO/INFOODs) tools are useful for developing high-quality food composition data. We used these tools to create a nutrient dataset for a nutritional survey in Matiari, Sindh, and to collect dietary information through a 24-hour food recall questionnaire. The survey results indicated 540 distinct types of foods, including 291 ready-to-eat items, 84 foods used as ingredients in recipes, and 164 various composite and mixed recipes. Most food items corresponded to the national and regional Food Composition Tables (FCTs) and the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) of the USDA, with the exception of recipe food data. We utilized Eurofir-recipe calculation methods to compute the recipe data. The data were homogenized and standardized utilizing EFSA and Langual™. Because of the obsolescence and inadequacy of Pakistan's food composition table in assessing essential nutrients, we had to source data from various other sources. Consequently, to establish the nutrient dataset, we incorporated approximately 25 % of user data from national sources, with recipe data comprising 46 % and less than 20 % extracted from regional, U.S database, and diverse online sources. This study is the first effort in which we gathered data from reliable sources representing local eating patterns, with some exceptions. Background: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a precursor of growth faltering in children living in impoverished conditions who are frequently exposed to environmental toxins and enteropathogens, leading to small bowel inflammatory, malabsorptive, and permeability derangements and low-grade chronic systemic inflammation., Objectives: We explored the association between anthropometrics and duodenal histologic features of EED among children from 3 lower middle-income country centers., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, Pakistani children (n = 63) with wasting, Bangladesh children (n = 116) with stunting or at risk for stunting (height-for-age Z score [HAZ] <-1 but ≥-2), and Zambian children (n = 108) with wasting or stunting received nutritional intervention. Children with anthropometric status refractory to intervention underwent endoscopy. Linear regression models included anthropometric around endoscopy, scores of histology parameters, and a global index score of EED-the total score percent-5 (TSP-5). Multivariable models were adjusted for center, age, sex, and histology slide quality., Results: Intersite variation was observed while exploring the association between anthropometrics and the TSP-5; for example, Pakistani children had the worst HAZ, yet their median TSP-5 score was lower than that of the other 2 centers. Even within each site, no overall pattern of higher TSP-5 score was observed with worsening HAZ. During univariate analysis, TSP-5 (coefficient: 0.01; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0, 0.02), goblet cell depletion (coefficient: 0.22; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.37), and Paneth cell depletion (coefficient: 0.14; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.27) were associated with HAZ scores; however, they lost statistical significance in the multivariable models, with study center most strongly confounding the relationships seen in univariate models between anthropometry and histology., Conclusions: This study contributes a crucial negative finding that duodenal morphological features did not associate with anthropometric phenotypes; hence, anthropometric measurements may not be a suitable outcome measure for use in EED trials. Recently, interest in tooth-colored fluoride-releasing dental materials has increased. Although physical and mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the restorative materials have been investigated, the effect of different immersion media on these properties is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the fluoride release of tooth-colored restorative materials after immersion in acidic beverages. Prepared samples of three restorative materials (a highly viscous glass ionomer (EQUIA Forte; GC, Tokyo, Japan), a compomer (Dyract XP; Dentsply, Weybridge, UK), and a bioactive restorative material (Activa BioACTIVE; Pulpdent, MA, USA)) were randomly divided and immersed in distilled water, a cola and an orange juice for one week. The HYSITRON T1 950 TriboIndenter device (Hysitron, USA) with the Berkovich diamond indenter tip was used for all measurements. The nanohardness and elastic modulus of the samples were measured by applying a force of 6000 μN to five different points on the sample surface. Surface roughness measurements were evaluated on random samples by scanning five random 40 × 40 μm areas. The properties were measured at the initial and one week after immersion. The values of nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness were tested for significant differences using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures ( p < 0.05). Tukey's honest significant difference (HSD) test was used for multiple comparisons. AB (Activa BioACTIVE) had the highest initial mean values for nanohardness. After post-immersion, the highest mean value for elastic modulus was the initial AB value. The lowest mean value for roughness of 100.36 nm was obtained for the initial DX (Dyract XP) measurement. Objective: To compare postprandial glucose excursions following a bolus with inhaled technosphere insulin (TI) or subcutaneous rapid-acting analog (RAA) insulin., Research Design and Methods: A meal challenge was completed by 122 adults with type 1 diabetes who were using multiple daily injections (MDI), a nonautomated pump, or automated insulin delivery (AID) and who were randomized to bolus with their usual RAA insulin (n = 61) or TI (n = 61)., Results: The primary outcome, the treatment group difference in area under the curve for glucose >180 mg/dL over 2 h, was less with TI versus RAA (adjusted difference -12 mg/dL, 95% CI -22 to -2, P = 0.02). With TI, the glucose excursion was smaller (P = 0.01), peak glucose lower (P = 0.01), and time to peak glucose shorter (P = 0.006). The envelope (env) protein of SARS-CoV-2, a pivotal component of the viral architecture, plays a multifaceted role in viral assembly, replication, pathogenesis, and ion channel activity. These features make it a significant target for understanding virus-host interactions and developing vaccines to combat COVID-19. Recent structural studies provide valuable insights into the conformational dynamics and membrane topology of the SARS-CoV-2 env protein, shedding light on its functional mechanisms. The strong homology and highly conserved structure of the SARS-CoV-2 env protein shape its immunogenicity and functional characteristics. This study examines the ability of the recombinant SARS-CoV-2 env protein to stimulate an immune response. In this study, recombinant envelope proteins were produced using the baculovirus expression system, and their potential efficacy was evaluated in both in vivo and in vitro models. Our results reveal that the env protein of SARS-CoV-2 stimulates humoral and cellular responses and highlight its potential as a promising vaccine candidate for combating the ongoing pandemic.

Iodine and selenium deficiencies are widespread both in developed countries and developing countries. The soil is the fundamental source of iodine and selenium for plants, and iodine and/or selenium-depleted soil restrains the cultivation of crops to cover recommended daily intakes of iodine and selenium. Although food fortification strategies, including salt iodization, increase the dietary intake of these minerals, their global deficiencies have not been eliminated. Therefore, new strategies have been developed to prevent iodine and selenium deficiencies, and biofortification is one of them. The aim of this review is to assert the outcomes of the studies that investigate the optimum conditions for biofortification with iodine and selenium and to recognize the role of biofortification practices as a potential solution for preventing iodine and selenium deficiencies. The findings of studies show that biofortification with iodine and selenium can be a solution for iodine and selenium deficiencies. Agronomic biofortification is currently a more convenient method to increase selenium and iodine contents in plants. However, the most effective agronomic biofortification conditions are crucial to acquire biofortified food. Moreover, increasing the awareness of the producers and consumers on biofortification has a determinative role in the achievement of biofortification practices for human health. Although research about iodine and selenium biofortification has been increased, the effectiveness of biofortified foods to meet recommended daily intakes is still unknown. Acoustic gravimetric biosensors attract attention due to their simplicity, robustness, and low cost. However, a prevailing challenge in these sensors is dissipation which manifests in a low quality factor (Q-factor), which limits their sensitivity and accuracy. To mitigate dissipation of acoustic sensors in liquid environments we introduce an innovative approach in which we combine microfluidic channels with gravimetric sensors. To implement this novel paradigm we chose the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) as our model system, owing to its wide applicability in biosensing and the relevance of its operating principles to other types of acoustic sensors. We postulate that the crucial determinant for enhancing performance lies in the ratio between the width of the microfluidic channels and the wavelength of the pressure wave generated by the oscillating channel side walls driven by the QCM. Our hypothesis is supported by finite element analysis (FEA) and dimensional studies, which revealed two key factors that affect device performance: (1) the ratio of the channel width to the pressure wavelength ( W / λ p ) and (2) the ratio of the channel height to the shear evanescent wavelength ( H / λ s ). To validate our hypothesis, we fabricated a microfluidic QCM (µ-QCM) and demonstrated a remarkable 10-fold improvement in its dissipation when compared to conventional QCM. The novel microfluidic approach offers several additional advantages, such as direct data interpretation, reduced volume requirement for sample liquids, and simplified temperature control, augmenting the sensor's overall performance. Objectives: To investigate the association between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based ligamentum teres lesions (LTL) and structural hip degeneration., Methods: Bilateral 3-T hip MRIs of participants (n = 93 [36 men]; mean age ( ± SD) 51 years ± 15.4) recruited from the community and the orthopedic clinic of a single medical center were included. Clinical and imaging data acquired included hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome scores, semi-quantitative scoring of hip osteoarthritis on MRI (SHOMRI) scores on fluid-sensitive sequences, and cartilage T 1ρ /T 2 compositional sequences. An MRI-based LTL scoring system, incorporating continuity, thickening, and signal intensity, ranging from 0 (normal) to 4 (complete tear) was constructed. Hip morphological features associated with LTL, based on functional or anatomical relationships to LT, were defined. Relationships between MRI-LT scores and SHOMRI, global/regional cartilage T 1ρ /T 2 , and proposed morphological abnormalities and LTL were explored by mixed effects linear and logistic regression models., Results: In 82 (46.1%) hips, no pain was documented; 118 (63.4%) and 68 (36.6%) hips were graded as KL-grade ≤ 1 and ≥ 2, respectively. Compared to MRI-LT score = 0 (normal), score = 4 (complete tear) revealed significantly worse subchondral bony degenerative changes for bone marrow lesions (SHOMRI-BML) and subchondral cysts (SHOMRI-sc) (p < 0.001, p = 0.015, respectively). Global acetabular T 1ρ , femoral T 2 were significantly increased for abnormal MRI-LT scores (p-range = 0.005-0.032). Regional analyses revealed significantly increased T 1ρ /T 2 in central acetabular/increased T 2 in off-central femoral regions (p-range = 0.005-0.046). Pulvinar effusion-synovitis, shallow fovea, and foveal osteophytes were significantly associated with abnormal LT MRI findings (p-range = < 0.001-0.044)., Conclusion: MRI abnormalities of LT are associated with worse SHOMRI-sc/BML scores, indicative of hip osteoarthritis and higher T 1ρ and T 2 that differ by region. Background: It is unclear whether targeted monitoring of acute adrenal insufficiency (AI) related adverse events (AE) such as sick day episodes (SDEs) and hospitalization rate in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is associated with a change in the occurrence of these events., Aim: Study temporal trends of AI related AE in the I-CAH Registry., Methods: In 2022, data on the occurrence of AI-related AE in children aged <18 years with 21-hydroxylase deficiency CAH were compared to data collected in 2019., Results: In 2022, a total of 513 children from 38 centers in 21 countries with a median of 8 children (range 1-58) per center had 2470 visits evaluated over a 3-year period (2019-2022). The median SDE per patient year in 2022 was 0 (0-2.5) compared to 0.3 (0-6) in 2019 ( P = .01). Despite adjustment for age, CAH phenotype and duration of study period, a difference in SDE rate was still apparent between the 2 cohorts. Of the 38 centers in the 2022 cohort, 21 had also participated in 2019 and a reduction in SDE rate was noted in 13 (62%), an increase was noted in 3 (14%), and in 5 (24%) the rate remained the same. Of the 474 SDEs reported in the 2022 cohort, 103 (22%) led to hospitalization compared to 299 of 1099 SDEs (27%) in the 2019 cohort ( P = .02)., Conclusion: The I-CAH Registry can be used for targeted monitoring of important clinical benchmarks in CAH. As an umbrella term, artificial intelligence (AI) covers machine learning and deep learning. This review aimed to elaborate on these terms to act as a primer for radiologists to learn more about the algorithms commonly used in musculoskeletal radiology. It also aimed to familiarize them with the common practices and issues in the use of AI in this domain.

Children with diabetes need consistent care across all environments, including school, where they spend significant time.Turkey's Diabetes at School Program, initiated in 2010, has made substantial progress in integrating diabetes care into the school system. The program's achievements include government support, annual awareness activities, communication between diabetes teams and schools, policy implementation, and training for school staff. A recent meeting of Provincial Health Service Officers highlighted ongoing efforts and future directions for the program, emphasizing the importance of continuous support for children with diabetes in educational settings. Key outcomes of this meeting include designated caregivers for children with diabetes at school, optional administration of insulin by trained staff, mandatory diabetes education for teachers, and health-conscious policies for school activities. The program's success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of teachers, healthcare professionals, and government officials. Ensuring robust support for children with diabetes in schools is vital for their well-being and academic success.

The aim of the present study was to define the risk factors associated with contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) in patients who underwent coronary artery angiography (CAG). In this retrospective cohort study, patients who underwent CAG between March 2014 and January 2022 were evaluated. A total of 2923 eligible patients were included in the study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictive factors. CI-AKI developed in 77 (2.6%) of 2923 patients. In multivariate analysis, diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were found to be independent factors associated with CI-AKI. In the subgroup analysis of patients with eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , eGFR remained a predictor of CI-AKI (Odds ratio (OR): .89, 95% CI: .84-.93; that is, a lower eGFR remains a risk factor for CI-AKI). In the receiving operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of patients with eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , the area under the curve of the eGFR was .826. Background: The aim of our study is to assess the prognostic impact of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on 28-day mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit with crush syndrome following the Kahramanmaraş earthquake in Türkiye., Methods: A total of 63 adult patients with crush syndrome admitted to the intensive care unit after the earthquake were enrolled in this study. The medical records of the patients were examined using follow-up forms and the hospital data system., Results: The mean age of the patients was 38.9±17.3 years, and the median time under debris was 31.5 hours. The 28-day mortality rate was 27%. In univariate generalized estimating equations (GEE) and other analyses, variables that are significant (or candidate variables) between 28-day mortality groups included age as a biological factor. These variables were included in the multivariate GEE model. The effects of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), serum sodium concentration, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, and PLR on mortality were statistically significant., Conclusion: Elevated SOFA scores, the necessity for CRRT, increased serum sodium levels, and decreased PLR values are associated with increased 28-day mortality in patients with crush syndrome after an earthquake.

Synaptic plasticity is believed to underlie the cellular and molecular basis of memory formation. Mitochondria are one of the main organelles involved in metabolism and energy maintenance as plastic organelles that change morphologically and functionally in response to cellular needs and regulate synaptic function and plasticity through multiple mechanisms, including ATP generation, calcium homeostasis, and biogenesis. An increased neuronal activity enhances synaptic efficiency, during which mitochondria's spatial distribution and morphology change significantly. These organelles build up in the pre-and postsynaptic zones to produce ATP, which is necessary for several synaptic processes like neurotransmitter release and recycling. Mitochondria also regulate calcium homeostasis by buffering intracellular calcium, which ensures proper synaptic activity. Furthermore, mitochondria in the presynaptic terminal have distinct morphological properties compared to dendritic or postsynaptic mitochondria. This specialization enables precise control of synaptic activity and plasticity. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to synaptic failure in many neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer's disease (AD). In AD, malfunctioning mitochondria cause delays in synaptic vesicle release and recycling, ionic gradient imbalances, and mostly synaptic failure. This review emphasizes mitochondrial plasticity's contribution to synaptic function. It also explores the profound effect of mitochondrial malfunction on neurodegenerative disorders, focusing on AD, and provides an overview of how they sustain cellular health under normal conditions and how their malfunction contributes to neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting their potential as a therapeutic target for such conditions., (© 2024 The Author(s). Given that global prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is expected to rise over the next few decades, understanding the mechanisms and causes of PD is critical. With emphasis on gut-brain axis, we sought to assess the impact of gentisic acid (GA), a diphenolic compound generated from benzoic acid, in rotenone (Rot) induced PD model in zebrafish. For thirty days, adult zebrafish were exposed to GA and rotenone. Tox-Track program was used to analyze locomotor behaviors in the control, GA, Rot, and Rot + GA groups. LC-MS/MS was performed in brain and intestinal tissues. Proteome Discoverer 2.4 was used to analyze raw files, peptide lists were searched against Danio rerio proteins. Protein interactions or annotations were obtained from STRING database. Tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) staining was performed immunohistochemically in the brain. PD-related gene expressions were determined by RT-PCR. Lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, and acetylcholinesterase were measured spectrophotometrically. Improved locomotor behaviors were observed by GA treatment in Rot group as evidenced by increased average speed, exploration rate, and total distance. 5214 proteins were identified in intestinal tissues, 4114 proteins were identified in brain by LC-MS/MS. Rotenone exposure altered protein expressions related to oxidative phosphorylation in brain and intestines. Protein expressions involved in ferroptis and actin cytoskeleton changed in brain and intestines. Altered protein expressions were improved by GA. GA ameliorated Th-immunoreactivity in brain, improved park2, park7, pink1, and lrrk2 expressions. Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin, responsible for memory impairment and cognitive dysfunction. The neurotoxic effect of aluminum on cognitive impairment is well documented, however, exposure to aluminum in a time-dependent manner and post-exposure self-recovery still needs to be elaborated. This research aimed to (1) study the time-dependent effect of aluminum exposure by administering a total dose of 5850 mg/kg of Al over two different time periods: 30 and 45 days (130 and 195 mg/kg of AlCl 3 respectively), and (2) study 20 days post-exposure self-recovery effect in both aluminum-exposed groups by giving distilled water. Cognitive abilities were investigated through Morris water maze test and hole board test and compared in both exposure and recovery groups. Oxidative stress markers and neurotransmitter levels were measured for both exposure and recovery groups. To understand the mechanism of aluminum exposure and recovery, immunohistochemical analysis of synaptophysin (Syp) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was performed. Results showed cognitive dysfunction, oxidative stress-induced damage, reduced neurotransmitter levels, decreased immunoreactivity of Syp, and increased GFAP. However, these parameters showed a larger improvement in the recovery group where rats were given aluminum for 30 days period in comparison to recovery group followed by 45 days of aluminum exposure. These results suggest that restoration of cognitive ability is affected by the duration of aluminum exposure. The study findings provide us with insight into the adverse effects of aluminum exposure and can be utilized to guide future preventive and therapeutic strategies against aluminum neurotoxicity., (© 2024. Background: Young students with skeletal immaturity report an increasing number of musculoskeletal symptoms associated with daily use of heavy backpacks. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between heavy backpack use and reports of pain., Methods: Data were collected from 300 students aged 11 to 18 at the University of Toronto Schools., Results: Students, on average, carried 15.9% of their body weight. 54% of students reported physiological complaints, primarily back, shoulder, neck, and leg pain. Backpack weight as a % of body weight was strongly associated with pain complaints. Younger students and those with longer commutes were more likely to report heavy backpacks (50% compared to 22.6% of older students, p< .001) and pain., Conclusion: Carrying heavy backpacks could result in increased musculoskeletal complaints in young students. Background: Information about the development of cognitive skills and the effect of sensory integration in children using auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) is still limited., Objective: This study primarily aims to investigate the relationship between sensory processing skills and attention and memory abilities in children with ABI, and secondarily aims to examine the effects of implant duration on sensory processing and cognitive skills in these children., Methods: The study included 25 children between the ages of 6 and 10 years (mean age: 14 girls and 11 boys) with inner ear and/or auditory nerve anomalies using auditory brainstem implants. Visual-Aural Digit Span Test B, Marking Test, Dunn Sensory Profile Questionnaire were applied to all children., Results: The sensory processing skills of children are statistically significant and positive, and moderately related to their cognitive skills. As the duration of implant use increases, better attention and memory performances have been observed (p < .05)., Conclusion: The study demonstrated the positive impact of sensory processing on the development of memory and attention skills in children with ABI. Purpose: Dietary phytochemicals have been under examination as adjuvants for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. This study aimed at examining the potential associations of dietary "Phytochemical Index" (PI) and polyphenol intake with obesity and diabetes-related parameters. Materials and Methods: The case-control study involved 331 participants (156 overweight/obese and 175 normal weight), aged 18-50 years. Dietary intake was assessed using the 24-hr dietary recall method, and the PI score was calculated as the percentage of energy intake provided by phytochemical-rich foods. Polyphenol intakes were calculated using Phenol-Explorer and U.S. Department of Agriculture databases. Anthropometrical measurements were taken, serum glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles were analyzed, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated, and blood pressure was measured. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the potential associations. Results: Participants with higher PI scores had higher total and some sub-classes polyphenol intakes compared with lower ones ( P  < 0.05, for each). Dietary PI score was not associated with any of the anthropometrical measurements; however, total polyphenol and flavonoids intakes were inversely associated with body mass index ( β  = -0.269, P  = 0.049; β  = -0.262, P  = 0.048; respectively), waist circumference ( β  = -0.127, P  = 0.021; β  = -0.130, P  = 0.016; respectively), and waist-to-hip ratio ( β  = -20.724, P  = 0.032; β  = -22.199, P  = 0.018; respectively) after adjusting for potential confounders. Either dietary PI score or total and sub-class polyphenol intakes were not associated with a better metabolic profile, except for the lignan intake, which was inversely associated with HOMA-IR ( β  = -0.048, P  = 0.011). Conclusions: Higher dietary polyphenol intake may have potential in the prevention of obesity and diabetes, and validated practical tools are essential for the assessment of polyphenol intake in clinical practice.

Cumulative escalation in antibiotic-resistant pathogens necessitates the quest for novel antimicrobial agents, as current options continue to diminish bacterial resistance. Herein, we report the synthesis of di-heterocyclic benzazole structures (12-19) and their in vitro evaluation for some biological activities. Compounds 16 and 17 demonstrated potent antibacterial activity (MIC = 7.81 μg/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus, along with significant anti-biofilm activity. Noteworthy is the capability of Compound 17 to inhibit biofilm formation by at least 50% at sub-MIC (3.90 μg/mL) concentration. Furthermore, both compounds exhibited the potential to inhibit preformed biofilm by at least 50% at the MIC concentration (7.81 μg/mL). Additionally, Compounds 16 and 17 were examined for cytotoxic effects in HFF-1 cells, using the MTT method, and screened for binding interactions within the active site of S. aureus DNA gyrase using in silico molecular docking technique, employing AutoDock 4.2.6 and Schrödinger Glidse programs. Overall, our findings highlight Compounds 16 and 17 as promising scaffolds warranting further optimization for the development of effective antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents., (© 2024 The Author(s). This study aims to investigate the association between developmental language disorder (DLD) and depressive symptoms in preschool-aged children, building upon previous research that has demonstrated emotional difficulties in children with DLD. Forty-one children with DLD or children at risk for DLD (DLD group) and 41 children with typical language development (TLD) were included in this study. Language development was evaluated using the TEDIL test which is a Turkish adaptation of the Test of Early Language Development-3. Auto acoustic Emissions Testing and Immittance-Metric Assessment were used to exclude children with hearing impairment. Developmental delays were excluded by Denver Developmental Screening Test II. Mothers filled out the Sociodemographic Data Form and the Child Depressive Symptoms Assessment Scale. The results demonstrate that children in DLD group scored significantly higher on the Child Depressive Symptoms Assessment Scale, manifesting increased levels of aggression, separation anxiety, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and encountering greater social adaptation difficulties and deterioration in cognitive processes than TLD. Multivariate regression analysis suggests that increased impulsivity and hyperactivity, alongside social and cognitive challenges, are predictors of DLD. The study concludes that depressive symptoms are more prevalent in children in DLD group than in their typically developing counterparts. These findings underscore the necessity for targeted psychiatric and pedagogical interventions, as well as individualized educational programs that cater to the socio-emotional and cognitive needs of children with DLD.

Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only treatment method that is known to reduce mortality and neurological sequela rates in newborns with moderate and severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We aimed to evaluate the relationship between rectal temperatures measured upon arrival to our unit and short-term outcomes in newborns with HIE/TH. This was a retrospective study conducted between January 2022 and January 2023. The neonates were divided into three groups according to their rectal temperatures measured upon arrival at our unit as follows: Group 1) <33°C, Group 2) 33-34°C (group arriving at target temperature), and Group 3) >34°C. Short-term outcomes and mortality were compared between the groups. Group 1 consisted of 17 (19.8%) neonates, Group 2 consisted of 34 (39.5%) neonates, and Group 3 consisted of 35 (40.7%) neonates who had HIE and an indication for TH. Rectal temperature on arrival to the unit was not related to the rate of clinical convulsions, rates of abnormal attenuated electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging findings, rate of pulmonary hypertension, duration of mechanical ventilation and length of hospital stay. Although the mortality rate was 29% in Group 1, it was 3% and 6% in Groups 2 and 3, respectively ( p = 0.016). No relationship was found between the rectal temperature upon arrival to the NICU and the short-term outcomes in HIE/TH neonates. However, the mortality rate in those who were overcooled was significantly higher compared with the other groups.

Aim The effects of conversion to open surgery during laparoscopic resection in rectal cancer on perioperative clinical and long-term oncological outcomes are still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the impact of conversion to laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer on perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes. Material and methods Between January 2019 and December 2023, 84 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery for rectal cancer at a single academic center were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were classified and compared as the laparoscopic (LAP-G) and converted (CONV-G) groups. Perioperative, pathological, and long-term oncological outcomes were compared. Results Of the 84 consecutive patients included, 18 were converted to open surgery, leading to a 21.4% conversion rate. Intraoperative blood loss was higher in CONV-G (180 ml vs. 80 ml, p<0.001), but early clinical outcomes were similar in both groups. The median follow-up period was 23.5 (range 3-65) and 30.5 (range 6-61) months in the LAP-G and CONV-G, respectively, and recurrence occurred in 11 (16.7%) and 3 (16.6%) patients, respectively. Three-year overall survival was 96.9% and 89.4% (p=0.609) and 3-year disease-free survival was 92.4% and 83.3% (p=0.881) in LAP-G and CONV-G, respectively, and the results were similar. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of locally and systemically delivered single-dose corticosteroid injections on bone tissue., Study Design: A total of 84 Wistar albino rats were divided into 2 groups as local and systemic injection groups, and 2 groups as control and experiment among themselves. Before the procedure, dexamethasone was given to the experimental group and physiological saline was given to the control group. A defect was created in the jawbone. It was sacrificed on the third, seventh, and 40th days. The mandible bones of the sacrificed rats were removed and the healing of the bone tissue was examined histopathologically., Results: No significant difference was observed in the tissue sections of the subjects sacrificed after 40 days. However, the increase in fibroblastic connective tissue and the number of osteoblasts were less in the experimental local groups that were sacrificed after 7 days compared with the control groups (P=0.040 and 0.041). The etiology of tic disorders (TDs) is not precisely known, although several lines of evidence suggest involvement of the immune system in pathogenesis. Here, we aimed to determine the expression levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in children with TD and compare them with those of healthy controls. Furthermore, we also evaluated their association with clinical variables in the TD group. Within the study period, 88 children with tic disorders and 111 healthy control children were enrolled. Most children with tic disorders were diagnosed with Tourette's disorder (n = 47, 53.4%) or persistent motor tic disorder (n = 39, 44.3%), while the remainder (n = 2, 2.3%) were diagnosed with persistent vocal tic disorder. We found that children with tic disorders had significantly elevated levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-4 expression, while we detected lower expression levels of IL-17 in children with tic disorders. Our findings provide a molecular landscape of cytokine expression in children with TD, which may suggest a proinflammatory state not affected by the presence of comorbidity and symptom severity. Background and Purpose: As treatment increasingly shifts from hospital settings to home environments, the burden on caregivers of chronic kidney disease patients has the potential to increase further. It is essential to assess the experience and burdens of caregivers of children with chronic kidney disease to identify caregivers' needs and provide targeted interventions when necessary. Hence, this study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Pediatric Renal Caregiver Burden Scale (PR-CBS)., Methods: This methodological study involved 215 parents with children aged 5-18 and was conducted between December 5, 2021, and August 15, 2022. The Content Validity Index, Explanatory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses, Cronbach's alpha, Test-retest reliability, and item-total score correlation were used in the data analysis. The Turkish version of PR-CBS test-retest reliability analysis was performed with 30 parents after four weeks., Results: PR-CBS consists of 20 items and five sub-dimensions (illness worries, impact on self, impact on child, responsibility, institutional burden). The Turkish version of the PR-CBS and its five dimensions demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency and reliability. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the levels of maternal and paternal attachment and the factors that affect them in individuals who had a baby after infertility treatment., Methods: This study followed a descriptive cross-sectional design in accordance with STROBE guidelines. The research was conducted in the infertility clinic of a university hospital and included 128 participants, consisting of 64 mothers and 64 fathers. Data were collected using the 'Personal Information Form-Mother', 'Personal Information Form-Father', 'Maternal Attachment Inventory (MAI)', and 'Postnatal Paternal-Infant Attachment Questionnaire (PPAQ)'., Results: The study found that the mothers had an average MAI score of 102.35 ± 3.05, while the fathers had an average PPAQ score of 82.21 ± 4.27. A significant correlation was observed between the mothers' MAI score and the duration of their marriage. Similarly, a significant correlation was observed between the fathers' PPAQ score and the duration of their marriage, the duration of their infertility diagnosis, and the duration of their infertility treatment (p < 0.05). The correlation analysis between the MAI score and the mean score of the PPAQ's subscale of pleasure in interaction was weakly significant and positive (r = 0.26; p = 0.032). However, there was no significant relationship between the MAI score and the PPAQ score (r = 0.18; p = 0.146)., Conclusions: The study findings indicate that parents who conceive through infertility treatment exhibit high levels of attachment to their babies. Background: Neoadjuvant treatment is the standard treatment in locally advanced ESCC. However, the optimal chemotherapy regimen is not known., Method: This is a retrospective observational cohort study conducted with propensity score matching. Patients with resectable ESCC from 13 tertiary centers from Türkiye were screened between January 2011 and December 2021. We compared the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy with the CF and the CROSS regimens in patients with ESCC., Results: Three hundred and sixty-two patients were screened. Patients who received induction chemotherapy (n = 72) and CROSS-ineligible (n = 31) were excluded. Two hundred and fifty nine patients received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. After propensity score matching (n = 97 in both groups), the mPFS was 18.4 months (95% CI, 9.3-27.4) and 25.7 months (95% CI, 15.6-35.7; p = 0.974), and the mOS was 35.2 months (95% CI, 18.9-51.5) and 39.6 months (95% CI 20.1-59.2; p = 0.534), in the CF and the CROSS groups, respectively. There was no difference between subgroups regarding PFS and OS. Compared with the CF group, the CROSS group had a higher incidence of neutropenia (34.0% vs. 62.9%, p < 0.001) and anemia (54.6% vs. 75.3%, p = 0.003) in all grades. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in grade 3-4 anemia, grade 3-4 neutropenia, and febrile neutropenia between groups. There were more dose reductions and dose delays in the CROSS group than in the CF group (11.3% vs. 3.1%, p = 0.026 and 34.0% vs. 17.5%, p = 0.009, respectively). The resection rate was 52.6% in the CF-RT and 35.1% in the CROSS groups (p = 0.014)., Conclusion: Favorable PFS and pCR rates and a comparable OS were obtained with the CROSS regimen over the CF regimen as neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in patients with ESCC., (© 2024 The Author(s). Uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential. Aside from the recently described risk stratification score, which has not been validated by other studies, and rare reports of aberrant p16 expression in malignant tumors, there are no criteria to reliably predict behavior. Herein, we evaluated the clinicopathologic features and p16 expression patterns in 30 IMTs, with genomic profiling performed in a subset (13 malignant, 3 benign). Fifteen patients had malignant IMTs, defined by extrauterine disease at diagnosis (n=5) or recurrence (n=10; median: 24 mo). Patients ranged from 8 to 65 (median: 51) years and tumors from 6 to 22 (median: 12.5) cm. In primary tumors (n=13), infiltrative borders were noted in 10, moderate/severe cytologic atypia in 9, tumor cell necrosis in 7, and lymphovascular invasion in 6, while mitoses ranged from 0 to 21 (median: 7) per 10 high-power fields. In contrast, 15 patients with benign IMTs ranged from 28 to 65 (median: 44) years, with follow-up of 18 to 114 (median: 41) months. Tumors ranged from 1.9 to 8.5 (median: 5.5) cm, 2 demonstrated infiltrative borders, and 1 had moderate cytologic atypia. No other high-risk histologic features were observed. Application of the previously described clinicopathologic risk stratification score in all primary IMTs with complete data (n=18) classified 8 as high-risk (all malignant), 8 as intermediate-risk (3 malignant, 5 benign), and 2 as low-risk (benign). p16 was aberrant in all malignant IMTs, with <1% expression noted in 10, overexpression (>90%) in 4, and subclonal loss in 1; all benign tumors had patchy staining (20% to 80%; median 50%). Molecular analysis detected CDKN2A deletions in 8 of 9 tumors with <1% p16 expression, while the other harbored a TERT promoter mutation. TERT promoter mutations were also identified in 2 of 3 IMTs with p16 overexpression. Neither of these alterations was detected in the 3 sequenced benign IMTs. Thus, we recommend performing p16 on all uterine IMTs, which, combined with the risk stratification score, is a promising and cost-effective tool for predicting CDKN2A status and outcome in these patients. Aim: Pulmonary artery involvement is a severe complication of Behcet's disease (BD). Although venous thrombosis is common in BD, pulmonary embolism is considered to be rare because the inflammatory nature makes the thrombi strongly adherent to the venous walls. This study aimed to define the radiological characteristics of pulmonary artery thrombosis (PAT) on computed tomography (CT) imaging in BD patients., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 165 BD patients with vascular involvement. Among the patients with venous involvement (n = 146), we identified 65 patients who had undergone thorax CT imaging previously. Fourteen patients who were diagnosed with PAT were included in the study. Expert radiologists re-evaluated the patients' initial and control thorax CT scans, classified the PAT as acute or chronic based on their radiological features., Results: The patients' median age was 35 (min-max: 15-60) years at the time of the initial CT scan, and nine were male. Twelve (85.7%) patients were symptomatic at the time of CT evaluation. Upon re-evaluating the thorax CTs, acute PAT was diagnosed in six (42.8%); chronic PAT was detected in eight (57.1%) patients. Two patients with chronic PAT also had acute PAT. Pulmonary artery aneurysms were present in three (21.4%) patients, and intracardiac thrombus was found in three (21.4%) patients., Conclusion: A significant number of BD patients with venous involvement had radiological findings consistent with acute PAT potentially due to pulmonary emboli in this study. LUTS were evaluated using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Female LUTS (ICIQ-FLUTS), toileting behaviors using Toileting Behavior-Women's Elimination Behaviors (TB-WEB), and pelvic floor health knowledge using the Pelvic Floor Health Knowledge Quiz (PFHKQ)., Results: In terms of LUTS, the most common symptoms in younger women are urgency (31.8%), bladder pain (28.2%), and frequency of incontinence episodes (35.3%), whereas in older women, the most common symptoms observed are urgency (64.2%), frequency of incontinence episodes (61.7%), intermittency (46.9%), urgency urinary incontinence (58%), and frequency of incontinence episodes (49.4%). Most unhealthy toileting behaviors correlated with LUTS in both groups (p < 0.05). Although a weak negative correlation was detected between ICIQ-FLUTS total score and PFHKQ function in younger women (p < 0.05), no correlation was found in older women (p < 0.05). Whereas premature voiding, straining during voiding, TB-WEB total score were higher in older women than in younger women (p < 0.05), delayed voiding, position preference for voiding, and PFHKQ function/dysfunction scores were higher in younger women than in older women (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Within the scope of preventive health services, it may be important to provide informative programs on healthy toileting behaviors and pelvic floor health to women of all ages in order to prevent LUTS., (© 2024. Objective: To investigate the associations of thigh muscle and fat volumes with structural abnormalities on MRI related to knee osteoarthritis., Materials and Methods: MRI studies of the thighs and knees from 100 individuals were randomly selected from the Osteoarthritis Initiative Cohort. Whole Organ MR Scoring (WORMS) and effusion-synovitis scoring were performed in all knee MRI. Thigh muscles, intermuscular fat, and subcutaneous fat were manually segmented in 15 consecutive MR thigh images. Radiographic Kellgren-Lawrence grades (KLG) were also obtained in all knee radiographs. Independent t-tests were used to investigate the associations between thigh muscle and fat volumes, and sex. Mixed-effects analyses were obtained to investigate the associations between thigh muscle and fat volumes, KLG, WOMAC pain score, cartilage and bone marrow WORMS, as well as effusion-synovitis scores., Results: Women had higher subcutaneous fat volume than men (616.82 vs. 229.13 cm 3 , p < 0.01) and men had higher muscle volumes than women (p < 0.01). Quadriceps (coef = -2.15, p = 0.01) and vastus medialis (coef = -1.84, p = 0.03) volumes were negatively associated with the WORMS cartilage scores. Intermuscular fat volume (coef = 0.48, p = 0.01) was positively associated with WORMS bone marrow edema-like lesion (BMEL) scores. The quadriceps (coef = -0.99, p < 0.01) and hamstring (coef = -0.59, p = 0.01) volumes were negatively associated with WORMS BMEL scores. No evidence of an association was found between thigh muscle and fat volumes with KLG and effusion-synovitis grading (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Increased quadriceps and hamstring volumes were negatively associated with cartilage lesion and BMEL scores while no evidence of an association was found between thigh muscle and fat volumes, and radiographic knee osteoarthritis or effusion-synovitis grading., (© 2024. Introduction: There is a misperception in society that individuals with visual impairment are asexual and cannot marry, have children, or take care of children. In addition, individuals with visual impairment face difficulties in many aspects of life due to accessibility issues. Although it is expected that visually impaired individuals experience difficulties when having children, very few studies have focused on understanding the challenges women with visual impairment face in the process of having children. The aim of this study was to identify the challenges faced by mothers with visual impairment from preconception through the postpartum period in Turkey., Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 17 mothers with visual impairment. Participants were from 28 to 38 years of age, and their youngest children were 2 years old or younger. Participants were asked about their experiences with the decision to have children, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Content analysis was used to analyze and present the data., Results: Participants had 1 to 3 children and a mean age of 32.4 years. Eleven themes were identified within 4 periods: preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Themes related to the experience of the preconceptional period included concern about the decision to have a child and the social pressure on the decision to have a child. Themes related to the experience of pregnancy included inaccessible pregnancy tests, emotional reactions to pregnancy, dissatisfaction with health care providers, and unmet expectations. Themes related to labor and birth included mixed feelings about labor dissatisfaction with health care providers and unmet expectations. Themes related to the postpartum period included personal care, infant care, reaction of the social network, and unmet expectations., Discussion: The mothers with visual impairment faced many challenges in the process of becoming a parent. In this study, microplastic contamination in water, natural mineral water and mineral water, sparkling soft drinks, cold tea and some traditional beverages marketed in Türkiye were assessed. Microplastics physically and chemically characterized by microscope and ATR/FT-IR, respectively. Microplastics were detected in 9 out of 47 beverage samples. A total of 250 microplastics with 5 different polymers, 2 different shapes, and 7 different colours were detected in 47 beverage samples. The average microplastic concentration was 2.24 ± 9.86 particles/L for all beverages analysed. The highest average microplastic concentration was found in mineral waters in glass bottles (average 11.3 particles/L). No microplastics were found in cold tea and other drinks. The total annual microplastic exposure from beverage consumption in male and female individuals aged >15 years was 2029 and 1786 particles/mL/year, respectively. The microplastic load index category of all beverage samples was determined as "moderate". The average pRi level of all beverages was 117 ± 260 and the risk level was determined as "low". Exogenous allergens, found in cosmetic products, jewelry items, antiseptics and antibacterials, plants, and solvents, can cause clinical allergic contact Dermatitis (ACD). To help identify and discern which allergen is causing ACD, clinicians use patch tests, but they can yield false-negative results at times. Examining potential reasoning for false negatives is particularly helpful when a patient's history and physical examination strongly suggest ACD, and the patch test is negative. A strong history and physical presentation suggestive of ACD warrants additional patch testing or other methods to verify a false-negative patch test result. We conducted a literature review to compile various reasonings and solutions for false-negative patch tests in suspected ACD patients. Utilizing EMBASE, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholars, 49 articles were included by using search terms such as "False negative patch test" or "False-negative patch test" and "allergic contact Dermatitis," or "ACD." Common factors that led to false-negative patch test results include low allergen concentration, inadequate percutaneous penetration, technique error, immunosuppressive therapy, and ultraviolet exposure. Potential solutions include using different vehicles, concentration, increasing reading time, repeating the patch test, intradermal testing, and repeat open application testing. If a false-negative patch test is suspected, then intradermal testing can be administered to ensure the specificity of the patch test result. Considering the main contributing factors and solutions to false-negative patch tests, clinicians can accurately diagnose ACD and administer proper treatment plans.

Increasing evidence has demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been linked to tissue regeneration both in vitro and in vivo. However, poor engraftment and low survival rate of transplanted MSCs are still a major concern. It has been found that the proliferation, survival, and migration of MSCs are all increased by hypoxic preconditioning. However, the molecular mechanism through which hypoxic preconditioning enhances these beneficial properties of MSCs remains to be fully investigated. Therefore, the present study is aimed to investigate the mechanism by which hypoxic preconditioning enhances the survival of MSCs. We used proteomic analysis to explore the molecules that may contribute to the survival and proliferation of hypoxic preconditioned (HP) MSCs. The analysis revealed a higher expression of prelamin A/C (Lmna), glutamate dehydrogenase 1(Glud1), Actin, cytoplasmic 1(Actb), Alpha-enolase (Eno1), Glucose-6-phosphate 1-dehydrogenase (G6pd), Protein disulfide-isomerase A3 (Pdia3), Malate dehydrogenase (Mdh1), Peroxiredoxin-6 (Prdx6), Superoxide dismutase (Sod1), and Annexin A2 (Anxa2) in HP-MSCs. These proteins are possibly involved in cellular survival and proliferation through various cellular pathways. Aim: This study aims to examine the nursing diagnosis skills of students who took the case-based online nursing processes course during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: The study followed a descriptive and cross-sectional design. The participants were first-year students (n = 148) enrolled in the nursing principles course in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year in the nursing department of a university. The course on nursing processes was delivered online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of the course, students who volunteered to participate in the study developed nursing diagnoses for the cases assigned to them. The data were collected from the students using two forms and were evaluated using a form developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed with numeric and percentage calculations., Findings: Although 56.8% of the students stated that they had difficulty making nursing diagnoses, 56.8% of them thought online education was not useful. The most commonly made diagnoses by the students who participated in the study included hyperthermia (66.2%), ineffective breathing pattern (54.7%), risk of falling (39.9%), fatigue (34.5%), and anxiety (33.8%). It was also found that students were able to identify objective data more easily as diagnosis criteria, whereas they were not able to identify abstract concepts., Conclusions: It was seen that the students who participated in the study had low levels of nursing diagnoses. Based on the findings, it is recommended that different teaching methods be employed in the online nursing processes course, and these methods be evaluated in terms of their effects on students' learning outcomes., Implications for Nursing Practices: The online nursing process course should be made more efficient. Anxiety-like conditions can interfere with daily activities as the adaptive mechanism fails to cope with stress. These conditions are often linked with increased oxidative stress, and abrupt neurotransmission and electroencephalography (EEG) wave pattern. Geraniol, a monoterpenoid, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as brain-calming effects. Therefore, in this study, geraniol was tested for the potential anxiolytic effects in a rat model of anxiety. The rats were exposed to an electric foot shock (1 mA for 1 s) to develop anxiety-like symptoms. Treatment was carried out using geraniol (10 and 30 mg/kg) and the standard diazepam drug. The behavior of the rats was analyzed using the open field test, light-dark test, and social interaction test. Afterward, the rats were decapitated to collect samples for neurochemical and biochemical analyses. The cortical-EEG wave pattern was also obtained. The study revealed that the electric foot shock induced anxiety-like symptoms, increased oxidative stress, and altered hippocampal neurotransmitter levels. The power of low-beta and high-beta was amplified with the increased coupling of delta-beta waves in anxiety group. However, the treatment with geraniol and diazepam normalized cortical-EEG wave pattern and hippocampal serotonin and catecholamines profile which was also reflected by reduced anxious behavior and normalized antioxidant levels. Enterocolic lymphocytic phlebitis is a rare lymphocytic vasculitis afflicting the gastrointestinal veins without involving the arterial system. Lymphocytic colitis is a more common pathology described as lymphocytic inflammation of the colonic epithelium. Concurrence of both these pathologies is extremely rare. We describe a 53-year-old man presenting with chronic watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Colonoscopic examination revealed normal-appearing mucosa, but biopsy findings revealed lymphocytic colitis with coexisting enterocolic lymphocytic phlebitis. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of maxillary first premolar mesial root concavity and to analyse its relation to periodontal bone loss (BL) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiographs., Methods: The mesial root concavity of maxillary premolar teeth was analysed via CBCT. The sex and age of the patients, starting position and depth of the root concavity, apicocoronal length of the concavity on the crown or root starting from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), total apicocoronal length of the concavity, amount of bone loss both in CBCT images and panoramic radiographs, location of the furcation, length of the buccal and palatinal roots, and buccopalatinal cervical root width were measured., Results: A total of 610 patients' CBCT images were examined, and 100 were included in the study. The total number of upper premolar teeth was 200. The patients were aged between 18 and 65 years, with a mean age of 45.21 ± 13.13 years. All the teeth in the study presented mesial root concavity (100%, n = 200). The starting point of concavity was mostly on the cervical third of the root (58.5%). The mean depth and buccolingual length measurements were 0.96 mm and 4.32 mm, respectively. Depth was significantly related to the amount of alveolar bone loss (F = 5.834, p = 0.001). The highest average concavity depth was 1.29 mm in the group with 50% bone loss. The data indicated a significant relationship between the location of the furcation and bone loss (X 2  = 25.215, p = 0.003). Bone loss exceeded 50% in 100% of patients in whom the furcation was in the cervical third and in only 9.5% of patients in whom the furcation was in the apical third (p = 0.003)., Conclusions: According to the results of this study, the depth of the mesial root concavity and the coronal position of the furcation may increase the amount of alveolar bone loss. Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical syndrome of altered small intestinal function postulated to be an important contributor to childhood undernutrition. The role of small intestinal bacterial communities in the pathophysiology of EED is poorly defined due to a paucity of studies where there has been a direct collection of small intestinal samples from undernourished children. Sixty-three members of a Pakistani cohort identified as being acutely malnourished between 3 and 6 months of age and whose wasting (weight-for-length Z -score [WLZ]) failed to improve after a 2-month nutritional intervention underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Paired duodenal luminal aspirates and duodenal mucosal biopsies were obtained from 43 children. Duodenal microbiota composition was characterized by sequencing bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons. Levels of bacterial taxa (amplicon sequence variants [ASVs]) were referenced to anthropometric indices, histopathologic severity in biopsies, expression of selected genes in the duodenal mucosa, and fecal levels of an immunoinflammatory biomarker (lipocalin-2). A "core" group of eight bacterial ASVs was present in the duodenal samples of 69% of participants. Streptococcus anginosus was the most prevalent, followed by Streptococcus sp., Gemella haemolysans , Streptococcus australis , Granulicatella elegans , Granulicatella adiacens, and Abiotrophia defectiva . At the time of EGD, none of the core taxa were significantly correlated with WLZ. Statistically significant correlations were documented between the abundances of Granulicatella elegans and Granulicatella adiacens and the expression of duodenal mucosal genes involved in immune responses (dual oxidase maturation factor 2, serum amyloid A, and granzyme H). These results suggest that a potential role for members of the oral microbiota in pathogenesis, notably Streptococcus , Gemella, and Granulicatella species, warrants further investigation.IMPORTANCEUndernutrition among women and children is a pressing global health problem. Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a disease of the small intestine (SI) associated with impaired gut mucosal barrier function and reduced capacity for nutrient absorption. The cause of EED is ill-defined. One emerging hypothesis is that alterations in the SI microbiota contribute to EED. We performed a culture-independent analysis of the SI microbiota of a cohort of Pakistani children with undernutrition who had failed a standard nutritional intervention, underwent upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy, and had histologic evidence of EED in their duodenal mucosal biopsies. The results revealed a shared group of bacterial taxa in their duodenums whose absolute abundances were correlated with levels of the expression of genes in the duodenal mucosa that are involved in inflammatory responses. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of core stability training program on ball-kicking velocity, running speed, and agility in adolescent male football players. To this end, 36 male football players aged 12-14 were divided into the training group and control group. Before implementing the core stability training program, participants' ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance were measured with a Bushnell velocity radar gun, 20 m sprint test, and 505 agility test, respectively, in both training group and control group. After the measurements, the training group followed core stability training program three days a week, for eight weeks in addition to the routine training program, while the control group followed the routine training program only. Ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance were re-measured in both groups after the completion of the core stability training program. Significant improvements were detected in all parameters, i.e., ball-kicking velocity, sprint speed, and agility performance in the training group (p<0.05). On the other hand, in the control group, no significant change was detected in the ball-kicking velocity and sprint speed (p>0.05), whereas a significant improvement was observed in agility performance (p<0.05). Inter-group comparisons revealed statistically significant differences between the groups in ball-kicking velocity and sprint speed in favor of the training group (p<0.05), while no significant difference was found between the groups in agility performance (p>0.05). Background: The "chain of survival" was first systematically addressed in 1991, and its sequence still forms the cornerstone of current resuscitation guidelines. The term "chain of survival" is widely used around the world in literature, education, and awareness campaigns, but growing heterogeneity in the components of the chain has led to confusion. It is unclear which of these emerging chains is most suitable, or if adaptations are needed in particular contexts to depict key actions of resuscitation in the 21st century. This scoping review provides an overview of the variety of chains of survival described., Objectives: To identify published facets of the chain of survival, to assess views and strategies about adapting the chain, and to identify reports on how the chain of survival affects teaching, implementation, or patient outcomes., Methods Eligibility Criteria and Sources of Evidence: A scoping review as part of the continuous evidence evaluation process of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) was conducted. MEDLINE(R) ALL (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), APA PsycINFO (Ovid), CINAHL (Ebscohost), ERIC (Ebscohost), Web of Science (Clarivate), Scopus (Elsevier), and Cochrane Library (Wiley Online) were searched. All publications in all languages describing chains of survival were eligible, without time restrictions. Due to the heterogeneity and publication types of the relevant studies, we did not pursue a systematic review or meta-analysis., Results: A primary search yielded 1713 studies and after screening we included 43 publications. Modified versions of the chain of survival for specific contexts were found (e.g., in-hospital cardiac arrest or paediatric resuscitation). There were also numerous versions with minor adaptations of the existing chain. Three publications suggested an impact of the use of the chain of survival on patient outcomes. No educational or implementation outcomes were reported., Conclusion: There is a vast heterogeneity of chain of survival concepts published. Background: Paragangliomas (PGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from the autonomic nervous system paraganglia. Urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGL) originate from the sympathetic neurons of the urinary bladder wall and represent 0.7% of all paragangliomas and <0.05% of all bladder tumors. PGL and UBPGL can be associated with SDHB, SDHD, NF1, and VHL gene variants, with the most common germline alterations found in SDHB and VHL ., Case Report: We report a case of a 42-year-old woman who presented with menorrhagia/hematuria, uterine leiomyomas, as well as cardiac and bladder masses. The cardiac mass was favored to be a myxoma based on clinical findings, while the bladder mass was diagnosed as UBPGL. A novel SDHB mutation (c.642G>A, p Q214Q), detected in the UBPGL, was proven to be somatic. Although this variant was seemingly synonymous, it was predicted to have a loss of function due to the splice site effect, which was further supported by the immunohistochemical loss of SDHB ., Conclusion: This case highlights the challenges of diagnosing an extremely rare entity, bladder paraganglioma, with an emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach to navigate various clinical and imaging findings that may initially be misleading. A recent large genome-wide association study has identified EGFR (encoding the epidermal growth factor EGFR) as a new genetic risk factor for late-onset AD. SHIP2, encoded by INPPL1, is taking part in the signalling and interactome of several growth factor receptors, such as the EGFR. While INPPL1 has been identified as one of the most significant genes whose RNA expression correlates with cognitive decline, the potential alteration of SHIP2 expression and localization during the progression of AD remains largely unknown. Here we report that gene expression of both EGFR and INPPL1 was upregulated in AD brains. SHIP2 immunoreactivity was predominantly detected in plaque-associated astrocytes and dystrophic neurites and its increase was correlated with amyloid load in the brain of human AD and of 5xFAD transgenic mouse model of AD. While mRNA of INPPL1 was increased in AD, SHIP2 protein undergoes a significant solubility change being depleted from the soluble fraction of AD brain homogenates and co-enriched with EGFR in the insoluble fraction. Using FRET-based flow cytometry biosensor assay for tau-tau interaction, overexpression of SHIP2 significantly increased the FRET signal while siRNA-mediated downexpression of SHIP2 significantly decreased FRET signal. Genetic association analyses suggest that some variants in INPPL1 locus are associated with the level of CSF pTau. Our data support the hypothesis that SHIP2 is an intermediate key player of EGFR and AD pathology linking amyloid and tau pathologies in human AD., (© 2024. The Author(s).)
