Abstract

The HELIX cosmic-ray detector is a balloon-borne instrument designed to measure the flux of light isotopes in the energy range from 0.2 GeV/n to beyond 3 GeV/n. It will rely on a ring-imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for particle identification at energies greater than 1 GeV/n and will use aerogel tiles with refractive index near 1.15 as the radiator. To achieve the performance goals of the experiment it is necessary to know the refractive index and its position dependence over the lateral extent of the tiles to a precision of O(10$^{-4}). In this paper we describe the apparatus and methods developed to calibrate the HELIX tiles in an electron beam, in order to meet this requirement., Comment: 27 pages and 16 figures. Abstract

Thermal dark matter models with particle $\chi$ masses below the electroweak scale can provide an explanation for the observed relic dark matter density. This would imply the existence of a new feeble interaction between the dark and ordinary matter. We report on a new search for the sub-GeV $\chi$ production through the interaction mediated by a new vector boson, called the dark photon $A'$, in collisions of 100 GeV electrons with the active target of the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. With $9.37\times10^{11}$ electrons on target collected during 2016-2022 runs NA64 probes for the first time the well-motivated region of parameter space of benchmark thermal scalar and fermionic dark matter models. No evidence for dark matter production has been found. This allows us to set the most sensitive limits on the $A'$ couplings to photons for masses $m_{A'} \lesssim 0.35$ GeV, and to exclude scalar and Majorana dark matter with the $\chi-A'$ coupling $\alpha_D \leq 0.1$ for masses $0.001 \lesssim m_\chi \lesssim 0.1$ GeV and $3m_\chi \leq m_{A'}$., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1906.00176

Abstract

In this letter, we propose a new method for measuring the Sachs form factors ratio ($R =\mu_p G_E/G_M$) based on the transfer of polarization from the initial proton to the final electron in the elastic $e \vec p \to \vec e p$ process, in the case when the axes of quantization of spins of the target proton at rest and of the scattered electron are parallel, i.e., when an electron is scattered in the direction of the spin quantization axis of the proton target. To do this, in the kinematics of the SANE collaboration experiment (2020) on measuring double spin asymmetry in the $\vec e\vec p \to e p$ process, using Kelly (2004) and Qattan (2015) parametrizations, a numerical analysis was carried out of the dependence of the longitudinal polarization degree of the scattered electron on the square of the momentum transferred to the proton, as well as on the scattering angles of the electron and proton. It is established that the difference in the longitudinal polarization degree of the final electron in the case of conservation and violation of scaling of the Sachs form factors can reach 70%. Abstract

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ has been measured in the center of mass energy range from 0.32 to 1.2 GeV with the CMD-3 detector at the electron-positron collider VEPP-2000. The measurement is based on a full dataset collected below 1 GeV during three data taking seasons, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 62 pb$^{-1}$. In the dominant $\rho$-resonance region, a systematic uncertainty of 0.7% has been reached. At energies around $\phi$-resonance the $\pi^+\pi^-$ production cross section was measured for the first time with high beam energy resolution. The forward-backward charge asymmetry in the $\pi^+\pi^-$ production has also been measured. It shows a strong deviation from the theoretical prediction based on the conventional scalar quantum electrodynamics framework, and it is in good agreement with the generalized vector-meson-dominance and dispersive-based predictions. Abstract

The priority of the health care system of Ukraine reforming is the development of primary health care based on family medicine. In terms of health care reform activities in higher educational institutions ofUkraineare oriented at improving the efficiency of highly qualified family doctors training. According to the implementation of health reform on April 6, 2011th by the Central Methodological Committee of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine “Permeating program for students of medical faculties of higher educational institutions and IV accreditation level was approved. Interns to master practical skills and techniques required to work in positions of physicians in the specialty« General practice - family medicine. Permeating program outlined the main ways of improving the teaching of general practitioners, including introduction of a basic registry practical skills and techniques required to work in positions of doctors specializing in "General practice - family medicine". Control of implementation of "Permeating program" should be carried out in almost all clinical departments. In preparing the family doctor in clinical departments, special attention should be given to medical and social aspects of public health as the basis of preventive and therapeutic medicine, the question of early diagnosis and treatment in the outpatient departments. Realization of permeating program will provide high-quality practical training of modern specialist in general practice - family medicine and will help future family physicians to better integrate into therapeutic process of primary medical and preventive care.

Abstract

In this study, we present the measurement of the intrinsic hadronic contamination at the CERN SPS H4 beamline configured to transport electrons and positrons at 100 GeV/c momentum. The analysis was performed using data collected by the NA64-$e$ experiment in 2022. Our study is based on calorimetric measurements, exploiting the different interaction mechanisms of electrons and hadrons in the NA64-ECAL and NA64-HCAL detectors. We determined the intrinsic hadronic contamination by comparing the results obtained using the nominal electron/positron beamline configuration with those obtained in a dedicated setup, in which only hadrons impinged on the detector. The significant differences in the experimental signatures of electrons and hadrons motivated our approach, resulting in a small and well-controlled systematic uncertainty for the measurement. Our study allowed us to precisely determine the intrinsic hadronic contamination, which represents a crucial parameter for the NA64 experiment in which the hadron contaminants may result in non-trivial backgrounds. Moreover, we performed dedicated Monte Carlo simulations for the hadron production induced by the primary T2 target. We found a good agreement between measurements and simulation results, confirming the validity of the applied methodology and our evaluation of the intrinsic hadronic contamination.

Abstract

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

We implemented, optimized and fully tested over multiple runs a superconducting Josephson junction fabrication process tailored for the integrated digital circuits that are used for control and readout of superconducting qubits operating at millikelvin temperatures. This process was optimized for highly energy efficient single flux quantum (ERSFQ) circuits with the critical currents reduced by factor of ~10 as compared to those operated at 4.2 K. Specifically, it implemented Josephson junctions with 10 uA unit critical current fabricated with a 10 uA/um2 critical current density. In order to circumvent the substantial size increase of the SFQ circuit inductors, we employed a NbN high kinetic inductance layer (HKIL) with a 8.5 pH/sq sheet inductance. Similarly, to maintain the small size of junction resistive shunts, we used a non-superconducting PdAu alloy with a 4.0 ohm/sq sheet resistance. For integration with quantum circuits in a multi-chip module, 5 and 10 um height bump processes were also optimized. Abstract

Propagation of high-current relativistic electron beam (REB) in plasma is relevant to many high-energy astrophysical phenomena as well as applications based on high-intensity lasers and charged-particle beams. Here we report a new regime of beam-plasma interaction arising from REB propagation in medium with fine structures. In this regime, the REB cascades into thin branches with local density hundred times the initial value and deposits its energy two orders of magnitude more efficiently than that in homogeneous plasma, where REB branching does not occur, of similar average density. Such beam branching can be attributed to successive weak scatterings of the beam electrons by the unevenly distributed magnetic fields induced by the local return currents in the skeletons of the porous medium. Results from a model for the excitation conditions and location of the first branching point with respect to the medium and beam parameters agree well with that from pore-resolved particle-in-cell simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present an extensive study of resonant two-dimensional (2D) plasmon excitations in grating-gated quantum well heterostructures, which enable an electrical control of periodic charge carrier density profile. Our study combines theoretical and experimental investigations of nanometer-scale AlGaN/GaN grating-gate structures and reveals that all terahertz (THz) plasmonic resonances in these structures can be explained only within the framework of the plasmonic crystal model. We identify two different plasmonic crystal phases. The first is the delocalized phase, where THz radiation interacts with the entire grating-gate structure that is realized at a weakly modulated 2D electron gas (2DEG) regime. In the second, the localized phase, THz radiation interacts only with the ungated portions of the structure. This phase is achieved by fully depleting the gated regions, resulting in strong modulation. By gate-controlling of the modulation degree, we observe a continuous transition between these phases. We also discovered that unexpectedly the resonant plasma frequencies of ungated parts (in the localized phase) still depend on the gate voltage. We attribute this phenomenon to the specific depletion of the conductive profile in the ungated region of the 2DEG, the so-called edge gating effect. Although we study a specific case of plasmons in AlGaN/GaN grating-gate structures, our results have a general character and are applicable to any other semiconductor-based plasmonic crystal structures. Our work represents the first demonstration of an electrically tunable transition between different phases of THz plasmonic crystals, which is a crucial step towards a deeper understanding of THz plasma physics and the development of all-electrically tunable devices for THz optoelectronics., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We study the properties of bound states in waveguide-QED systems consisting of multiple giant atoms coupled to a coupled-resonator waveguide. Based on the general analytical expressions for these states and the corresponding energy spectra, we analyze in detail the threshold conditions for the appearance of bound states and the photon-mediated interactions between dressed atoms for different configurations. In addition, when multiple giant atoms are coupled to the waveguide, different types of interacting atomic chain can be obtained by manipulating the coupling configurations. Accordingly, the energy spectra of the bound states form metaband structures in the photonic band gaps. Abstract

Classical and quantum complex nonlinear scalar fields are considered. A new approach to the quantization of nonlinear fields and the construction of a perturbation theory with allowance for spontaneous symmetry breaking is proposed, based on the use of the relativistic model of a self-consistent field as the main approximation. The concept of a particle is analyzed within the frame-work of the theory of nonlinear quantum fields. When constructing single-particle states, the contribution of vacuum fluctuations is systematically taken into account. Within the framework of the developed approach, the problem of the existence of massless scalar particles is discussed. It is shown that successive consideration of the vacuum averages of not only one field operator, but also the products of two field operators, leads to the appearance of masses for scalar particles. Various states in which the field can exist for given parameters entering into the Lagrangian are considered, and the vacuum energy densities in these states are calculated. It is shown that, depending on the values of the parameters entering into the Lagrangian, the vacuum energy density can be either positive or negative, which is important for modern cosmology., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. Abstract

We investigate the role of gap states in processes of perturbation transmission along finite superconducting Kitaev chain. We look at this problem on the general ground and use the formalism of non-stationary Greens functions, which contain full information about the non-equilibrium and non stationary properties of the system. We discuss tunneling current and non-stationary transport properties of a finite Kitaev chain with each edge connected to its own external lead. It is shown that the tunneling current is always exponentially small for long chains. The time dependent behavior of the tunneling current after the sudden change of bias voltage in one of the leads is also obtained. We investigate the characteristic time of charge transfer from the state at one end of the chain to the opposite edge state. We obtain that this time always exponentially increases with the growth of the chain length, and the relaxation time to the new equilibrium occupation number for the localized state is very large. Our calculations are completely analytical and straightforward, in contrast with many other methods. Obtained results show how quickly the "second half" of Majorana state responds after external perturbation acts on the "first half" and why "Majorana" states can hardly be used for any practical devices that require signal transmission from one end of the system to the other.

Abstract

In the framework of the theoretical model of the phase transition of binary solutions into spatially inhomogeneous states proposed earlier by the autors [1], which takes into account nonlinear effects, the role of the cubic in concentration term in the expansion of free energy was studied. It is shown that taking into account the cubic term contributions to the stabilization of a homogeneous state. The existence of two inhomogeneous phases in an isotropic medium, considered in [1], proves to be possible only at half the concentration of the solution. The contribution of inhomogeneity effects to thermodynamic quantities is calculated. Abstract

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

The characteristics of a single-photon emitter based on a semiconductor quantum dot, such as their indistinguishability and brightness, depend on the stability of the recombination channel, which can switch spontaneously between exciton and trion. We show that dominant recombination through neutral exciton states can be achieved by careful control of the doping profile near an epitaxial InAs/GaAs quantum dot placed in a columnar microcavity with distributed Bragg reflectors. The Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments carried out in the fabricated device demonstrate the degree of indistinguishability of 91% of successively emitted single photons within 242 ns at an efficiency of 10% inside a single-mode optical fiber. The achieved brightness made it possible to implement spatio-temporal demultiplexing of photons in six independent spatial modes with an in-fiber generation frequency of more than 0.1 Hz., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. 195. Pathogenetic features of iNOS expression in the basal magnocellular nucleus of rats against the background of experimental neurodegeneration

Abstract

Aim. To characterize the features of iNOS expression in neurons of the basal magnocellular nucleus against the background of nitrosative stress during experimental colchicine-induced neurodegeneration. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 30 male Wistar rats. At the first stage of the experiment, cognitive impairments were modeled in rats (n = 10) by intracerebroventricular injection of colchicine, and compared with sham-operated and intact animal groups, the validity of the model was demonstrated using an 8-arm radial maze LE760 (PanLab Harvard Apparatus, Spain). Subsequently, the animals were euthanized with sodium thiopental, and the brain was removed for histological, immunofluorescence, and biochemical analyses. Results. It was found that intracerebroventricular injection of colchicine compared to intact and sham-operated animals leads to disruption of histoarchitecture in the basal magnocellular nucleus of rats with a significant decrease in the Nissl substance area in neurons by 47.3 % and 35.9 %, respectively. At the same time, the level of nitrites in the brain homogenates of animals with experimental neurodegeneration exceeded the comparison groups almost 10 times (intact) and 7 times (sham-operated rats). Meanwhile, immunofluorescence investigation of iNOS expression in the basal magnocellular nucleus of rats with intracerebroventricular colchicine administration, compared to intact and sham-operated animals, revealed a significantly higher value of corrected total cell fluorescence by 22.7 % and 45.3 %, respectively. Simultaneously, it was established that experimental colchicine-induced neurodegeneration is accompanied by a significantly greater number of iNOS+ cells in the basal magnocellular nucleus compared to control groups. Conclusions. Intracerebroventricular injection of colchicine to experimental rats is accompanied by morphological signs of neurodestruction in the basal magnocellular nucleus against the background of nitrosative stress. iNOS expression in rats after intracerebroventricular colchicine administration in the cells of the basal magnocellular nucleus is characterized by a higher enzyme content compared to intact and sham-operated animals. The area of immunopositive cells between experimental groups does not change statistically. Intracerebroventricular administration of colchicine to experimental rats is accompanied by an increase in the number of immunopositive cells for iNOS in the basal magnocellular nucleus.

In China, cases of tick-borne encephalitis are primarily caused by the Far East subtype of TBEV, which exhibits a distinct disease course compared to other extensively studied subtypes. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the nucleic acid and serological diagnostic characteristics of patients infected with the TBEV in China, which is the focus of investigation in the present study.Methods: This study established a TaqMan qPCR approach to detect TBEV RNA in the serum with optimal specificity, sensitivity, and precision. Using TaqMan qPCR and ELISA assay for TBEV IgM detection, serum samples from 63 hospitalized patients bitten by ticks in Northeast China were investigated for diagnostic characteristics.Results: Twenty-five patients were positive for viral RNA; nineteen patients were positive for IgM, and nine were positive for both viral RNA and IgM. Through comparative analysis, TBEV RNA copies were negatively correlated with the virus incubation period. IgM levels were positively correlated with the clinical symptom scores of patients. The severity of clinical symptoms and the length after the tick bite could be used to predict the IgM occurrence. Furthermore, IgM levels and viral RNA copies were not correlated in double-positive patients.Conclusion: Both nucleic acid and serological detection methods exhibited distinct windows for detecting TBEV infection, with some overlap, and were associated with specific correlated factors. The role of the plasma trough concentration of VCZ (C0) in hepatotoxicity is confusion. VCZ N-oxide is the primary metabolite of VCZ in plasma. We investigated the role of VCZ C0 and plasma trough concentration of VCZ N-oxide (CN) in hepatotoxicity in adult patients.Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study. VCZ C0 and CN were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.Results: In total, 601 VCZ C0 and CN from 376 adult patients were included. The percentage of grade 1 or higher adverse events for ALP, ALT, AST, γ-GT, and TBIL were 35.4%, 21.0%, 30.1%, 56.2%, and 22.2%, respectively. Compared with younger adult patients, elderly patients (≥ 65 years) had a higher rate of grade 1 or higher adverse events of ALP. In the multivariate analysis, VCZ C0 was a risk factor for grade 1 or higher adverse events of AST in elderly patients and TBIL in younger adult patients, and VCZ CN was a risk factor for grade 1 or higher adverse events of ALT, AST, and TBIL. Results of the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that when the VCZ C0 was higher than 4.0 μg/mL, or the VCZ CN was lower than 1.7 μg/mL, the incidence of grade 1 or higher adverse events of AST and TBIL increased.Conclusion: VCZ C0 and CN were associated with liver function-related adverse events. However, the underlying neuropathological mechanisms of ZAP with psychiatric comorbidities remain poorly understood.Patients and Methods: Rest-stating functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data from 41 ZAP patients without anxiety or depression (noA/D-ZAP), 11 ZAP patients with anxiety or depression (A/D-ZAP) and 29 healthy controls (HCs) were acquired. Degree centrality (DC) based on rs-fMRI was used to explore the node changes in the brain functional network in these subjects. Moreover, correlations and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed.Results: One-way analysis of variance revealed abnormal DC values in the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and bilateral precuneus among the three groups. Compared with HCs, A/D-ZAP showed increased DC values in the bilateral pons, while noA/D-ZAP showed increased DC values in the right pons, left brainstem and rectal gyrus and decreased DC values in the right cingulate gyrus and bilateral precuneus. A/D-ZAP showed increased DC values in the left MFG and precentral gyrus (PG) compared with noA/D-ZAP. The DC value of the left pons in A/D-ZAP was positively correlated with the self-rating anxiety scale score. Areas under the curve of DC values in the left PG and MFG for distinguishing A/D-ZAP from the noA/D-ZAP group were 0.907 and 1.000, respectively.Conclusion: This study revealed the node differences in the brain functional network of ZAP patients with or without psychiatric comorbidities. Abstract

Current geopolitical situation affects greatly on worldwide distribution of energy. These circumstances challenge Russian energy companies to be more flexible in development of foreign market expansion strategies and pro-active in establishing of cooperation mechanisms with new partners abroad. In this case gas power generation should be considered more attentively, gas-fired power plants provide the customer with end-product, while natural gas exporters create additional values to gas exports and are able to achieve synergy of core business and power supply. The article considers Russian power generation companies’ potential expansion to new power markets. Brief description of two electricity markets is provided with examples of Iran, the largest regional market and Pakistan, which suffers from power deficit and non-sustainable energy supply. Iran power sector is also remarkable with its experience of development under international sanctions, including establishment of energy machinery sector based on localization of foreign technologies. Pakistan is one of the most attractive LNG markets for Russian companies, which face the challenge to increase LNG export up to 20% of world market share.

Abstract

Peripheral nerve sheaths tumors (PNST) account for about 8 % of all nervous system cancers. The relapse rate ranges from 17.3 to 26.4 %, showing an upward trend. The causes and provoking factors for the development of relapses of PNST have not been fully studied. Purpose of the study: to establish criteria for predicting recurrence of PNST. Material and Methods. The study included 122 patients who were treated at the Department of Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery of A.I. Polenov Russian Research Neurosurgical Institute from 2009 to 2021. Among them, there were 87 (71.3 %) patients with primary PNST and 35 (28.7 %) patients with recurrent PNST. All patients underwent MRI and ENMG both before and after surgery. An immunohistochemical study of Ki67 and SO X10 markers was performed. Results. The majority of relapses occured within 1 year after surgery. In cases with radical removal of PNST, the risk of relapse was: 28.6 % for schwannomas 28.6 %, 37.1 % for neurofibromas and 34.3 % for MP NST 34.3 % (p≥0.05).
