Abstract

Caching contents at the edge of network is considered to be a cost-effective solution to cope with ongoing traffic growth and address the backhaul bottleneck problem in wireless networks. However, the inherent characteristics of wireless networks, including the high mobility of users and restricted storage capability of edge nodes, cause many difficulties in the design of caching schemes. Driven by the recent advancements in Machine Learning (ML), learning-based proactive caching schemes are able to accurately predict content popularity and improve cache efficiency, but they need gather and analyse users' content retrieval history and personal data, leading to privacy concerns. To address these challenges, this research mainly focuses on the design of learning-based caching schemes to improve caching efficiency and protect user privacy in various modern networks, such as Fifth Generation Mobile Networks (5G), Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV), and Fog Radio Access Networks (F- RANs). In modern networks, mobile phones, wearable devices, and autonomous vehicles provide growing computational power and storage capability. Coupled with the increasing concern about data privacy protection, the emerging framework of federated learning has been recognised as a promising framework to efficiently build ML models while protecting user privacy by keeping data at local devices and fitting ML techniques into the network edges. In 5G, a communication Efficient Federated learning based Proactive content Caching scheme (EFPC) is proposed to mitigate the privacy risks and reduce communication consumption. Based upon the federated learning framework, each user locally trains a shared model for content popularity prediction by using their own data, and only uploads the parameters of the model to the edge server for aggregation. To further reduce communication costs, the 3LC data compression scheme is used in EFPC to compress the upload parameters of the model. In F-RANs, a Federated Learning based Cooperative Hierarchical Caching scheme (FLCH) is designed to maximise the utilisation of available caches with edge node. FLCH exploits horizontal cooperation between neighbour F-APs and vertical cooperation between the baseband unit pool and fog access points to cache contents with different degrees of popularity. In IoV, a Mobility-aware Proactive edge Caching scheme based on Federated learning (MPCF) is developed to support mobility of vehicles. This new scheme enables multiple vehicles to collaboratively learn a global model for predicting content popularity with the private training data distributed on local vehicles. MPCF also integrates a mobility-aware cache replacement policy, which allows the network edges to add/evict contents in response to the real-time mobility patterns and dynamic preferences of vehicles. To ease reliance on the fixed central server, eliminate the issue of hand-over between RSUs, a peer-to-peer federated deep learning based proactive caching scheme (PPFC) is proposed. A vehicle rather than a fixed edge node, acts as a central server to aggregate ML models from nearby vehicles. A dual-weighted model aggregation scheme is designed to reduce the effect of straggler vehicles and further improve the global model accuracy. The proposed caching schemes in this thesis can greatly improve cache performance, effectively protect users' privacy and significantly reduce communication costs. The simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of these caching schemes and the accuracy of the designed prediction models using real-world datasets.

Abstract

This Letter reports the first extraction of individual antineutrino spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu fission and an improved measurement of the prompt energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay. The analysis uses $3.5\times 10^6$ inverse beta-decay candidates in four near antineutrino detectors in 1958 days. The individual antineutrino spectra of the two dominant isotopes, $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu, are extracted using the evolution of the prompt spectrum as a function of the isotope fission fractions. In the energy window of 4--6~MeV, a 7\% (9\%) excess of events is observed for the $^{235}$U ($^{239}$Pu) spectrum compared with the normalized Huber-Mueller model prediction. The significance of discrepancy is $4.0\sigma$ for $^{235}$U spectral shape compared with the Huber-Mueller model prediction. The shape of the measured inverse beta-decay prompt energy spectrum disagrees with the prediction of the Huber-Mueller model at $5.3\sigma$. Abstract

A high precision calibration of the nonlinearity in the energy response of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment's antineutrino detectors is presented in detail. The energy nonlinearity originates from the particle-dependent light yield of the scintillator and charge-dependent electronics response. The nonlinearity model is constrained by $\gamma$ calibration points from deployed and naturally occurring radioactive sources, the $\beta$ spectrum from $^{12}$B decays, and a direct measurement of the electronics nonlinearity with a new flash analog-to-digital converter readout system. Less than 0.5% uncertainty in the energy nonlinearity calibration is achieved for positrons of kinetic energies greater than 1 MeV., Comment: 17 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

Black hole mass measurements outside the local universe are critically important to derive the growth of supermassive black holes over cosmic time, and to study the interplay between black hole growth and galaxy evolution. In this paper we present two measurements of supermassive black hole masses from reverberation mapping (RM) of the broad CIV emission line. These measurements are based on multi-year photometry and spectroscopy from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN) and the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES), which together constitute the OzDES RM Program. The observed reverberation lag between the DES continuum photometry and the OzDES emission-line fluxes is measured to be $358^{+126}_{-123}$ and $343^{+58}_{-84}$ days for two quasars at redshifts of $1.905$ and $2.593$ respectively. The corresponding masses of the two supermassive black holes are $4.4 \times 10^{9}$ and $3.3 \times 10^{9}$ M$_\odot$, which are among the highest-redshift and highest-mass black holes measured to date with RM studies. Abstract

Measurements of the physical properties of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei are important for better understanding the growth and evolution of supermassive black holes. We present the accretion disk sizes of 22 quasars from continuum reverberation mapping with data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) standard-star fields and the supernova C fields. We construct continuum light curves with the griz photometry that span five seasons of DES observations. These data sample the time variability of the quasars with a cadence as short as 1 day, which corresponds to a rest-frame cadence that is a factor of a few higher than most previous work. We derive time lags between bands with both JAVELIN and the interpolated cross-correlation function method and fit for accretion disk sizes using the JAVELIN thin-disk model. These new measurements include disks around black holes with masses as small as ∼107 M o˙, which have equivalent sizes at 2500 Å as small as ∼0.1 lt-day in the rest frame. We find that most objects have accretion disk sizes consistent with the prediction of the standard thin-disk model when we take disk variability into account. We have also simulated the expected yield of accretion disk measurements under various observational scenarios for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Deep Drilling Fields. We find that the number of disk measurements would increase significantly if the default cadence is changed from 3 days to 2 days or 1 day.

175. Experimental and Numerical Evaluation of Perfobond Rib Shear Connectors Embedded in Recycled Aggregate Concrete

Abstract

In this paper, the use of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) for the upper slabs in steel-concrete composite beams is proposed. Perfobond rib connector (PBL), a relatively new type of shear connectors, has been widely used to ensure composite action between the steel and concrete elements in composite beams. For the past decades, several studies on assessing the performance of PBLs have been conducted, but very few focused on the PBLs that are embedded in RAC slabs. This paper presents results of an experimental and numerical simulation study that focused on characterizing the behavior of PBL fabricated using RAC. In the experimental program, a total of six standard push-out specimens, divided into three groups, were fabricated and loaded to failure. Test results indicated that the ductility of the PBLs using RAC materials decreased as the perforated steel plate thickness decreased, while the PBL ultimate strength increased by 4.3% and 12.8% for steel plate thicknesses of 10.0 mm and 12.0 mm, respectively, as compared to specimens with 8.0 mm steel plate thickness. Finite element (FE) models for PBLs embedded in RAC were developed, and numerical results were validated by corresponding experimental results. An extensive parametric numerical analysis was conducted to assess the effects of different parameters such as transverse steel rebar diameter and perforated steel plate strength and thickness on the performance of such connectors. Numerical simulation results showed that the PBL ultimate strength obtained based on the perforated plate fracture failure mode increases linearly as the steel rebar diameter increases. Also, numerical results indicated that as steel plate strength and thickness increase, failure mode changes from steel plate fracture to rupture of reinforced concrete dowels. Furthermore, existing published analytical formulas for predicting behavior of PBLs were assessed via a comparison with experimental and numerical results developed in this study. The outcomes of this study contribute in providing fundamental knowledge in a new sustainable application of PBL in steel-concrete composite beams with RAC slabs.

Abstract

A search for a time-varying $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ signal was performed with 621 days of data acquired by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment over 704 calendar days. The time spectrum of the measured $\overline{\nu}_e$ flux normalized to its prediction was analyzed with a Lomb-Scargle periodogram, which yielded no significant signal for periods ranging from 2 hours to nearly 2 years. The normalized time spectrum was also fit for a sidereal modulation under the Standard Model extension (SME) framework to search for Lorentz and CPT violation (LV-CPTV). Limits were obtained for all six flavor pairs $\bar{e}\bar{\mu}$, $\bar{e}\bar{\tau}$, $\bar{\mu}\bar{\tau}$, $\bar{e}\bar{e},\bar{\mu}\bar{\mu}$ and $\bar{\tau}\bar{\tau}$ by fitting them one at a time, constituting the first experimental constraints on the latter three. Daya Bay's high statistics and unique layout of multiple directions from three pairs of reactors to three experimental halls allowed the simultaneous constraint of individual SME LV-CPTV coefficients without assuming others contribute negligibly, a first for a neutrino experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Linear alkylbenzene has been recently used as the solvent of liquid scintillator by several neutrino experiments. The energy quenching effect of a linear alkylbenzene based liquid scintillator is studied in this paper with a 14 MeV D-T compact neutron generator, to improve the energy non-linearity modelling of this kind of detectors. The recoiled proton in the liquid scintillator has a kinetic energy ranging from 0.5 MeV to 13 MeV. Abstract

We report a measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with nearly 4 million reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ inverse beta decay candidates observed over 1958 days of data collection. The installation of a Flash-ADC readout system and a special calibration campaign using different source enclosures reduce uncertainties in the absolute energy calibration to less than 0.5% for visible energies larger than 2 MeV. The uncertainty in the cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He background is reduced from 45% to 30% in the near detectors. A detailed investigation of the spent nuclear fuel history improves its uncertainty from 100% to 30%. Analysis of the relative $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra among detectors yields $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.0856\pm 0.0029$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}=(2.471^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the normal hierarchy, and $\Delta m^2_{32}=-(2.575^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the inverted hierarchy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table. v4: the published version

Abstract

This work reports a precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino flux using 2.2 million inverse beta decay (IBD) events collected with the Daya Bay near detectors in 1230 days. The dominant uncertainty on the neutron detection efficiency is reduced by 56% with respect to the previous measurement through a comprehensive neutron calibration and detailed data and simulation analysis. The new average IBD yield is determined to be $(5.91\pm0.09)\times10^{-43}~\rm{cm}^2/\rm{fission}$ with total uncertainty improved by 29%. The corresponding mean fission fractions from the four main fission isotopes $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, $^{239}$Pu, and $^{241}$Pu are 0.564, 0.076, 0.304, and 0.056, respectively. The ratio of measured to predicted antineutrino yield is found to be $0.952\pm0.014\pm0.023$ ($1.001\pm0.015\pm0.027$) for the Huber-Mueller (ILL-Vogel) model, where the first and second uncertainty are experimental and theoretical model uncertainty, respectively. Immunotherapy achieves clinical progress in the treatment of this prevalent malignant disease by virtue of the development of tumor immunology; however, most patients have experienced minimal or no clinical benefit in terms of overall survival. The complexity and diversity of tumor microenvironment (TME) built by immune and stromal cell subsets has been considered to be responsible for the insufficiency of immunotherapy. The advance of bioanalytical technology boosts the exploration of the composition and differentiation of these infiltrated cells, which reflect the immune state of the TME and impact the efficacy of the antitumor immune response. Targeting these cells to remodel the TME is one of the important immunotherapeutic approaches to improve HCC treatment. The relationship that intestinal microbiota disorder and de novo fatty acid synthesis metabolism have with disease progression in multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) has not yet been fully studied.Objective: To investigate the effects of long periods of MDR-TB, pre-extensively drug-resistant TB (pre-XDR-TB), or rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) on gut microbiome dysbiosis and advanced disease.Methods: The sample was chosen between March 2019 and September 2019 in Wenzhou Central Hospital and comprised 11 patients with pre-XDR-TB, 23 patients with RR-TB, and 28 patients with MDR-TB. Healthy individuals were chosen as the control group (CK group). An overnight fast blood sample was drawn via venipuncture into tubes without anticoagulant. For analysis, 300 mg of faeces from patients from the same group was mixed and analysed using DNA extraction, NGS sequencing, and bioinformatics. A QIAamp Fecal DNA Mini Kit was used to isolate the DNA. The extracted DNA was stored at − 20°C.Results: Advanced TB was concurrent with an elevated level of the proportions of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC1) to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and fatty acid synthase (FASN) to GAPDH in de novo fatty acids synthesis, and Eubacterium, Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, and Ruminococcus were increased significantly in RR-TB patients compared to healthy individuals, whereas their abundance in the pre-XDR-TB and MDR-TB groups showed little change in comparison with the control group. Proteobacteria levels were greatly increased in the RR-TB and MDR-TB patient groups but not in the patients with pre-XDR-TB or the healthy subjects. The pre-XDR-TB group exhibited alterations of the intestinal microbiome: coliform flora showed the highest abundance of Verrucomicrobiales, Enterobacteriales, Bifidobacteriales and Lactobacillales. De novo fatty acids synthesis was enhanced in patients and was associated with the gut microbiome dysbiosis induced by the antimicrobials, with Bacteroidetes, Bacteroidales, and Bacteroidaceae displaying the most important correlations on a phylum, order, and family level, respectively.Conclusion: The progression to advanced TB was observed to be a result of the interaction between multiple interrelated pathways, with gut–lung crosstalk potentially playing a role in patients with drug-resistant TB.Keywords: multi-drug resistant TB disease, gut commensal, microbial imbalance, de novo fatty acids synthesis, microbiome biosignature alterations
