Abstract

We propose a new formula to evaluate the ground state energy of the two-body random Hamiltonian in terms of the average energy and the width of eigen-energies. For fermions in a single orbital, we obtain an excellent agreement between the spin I ground state probabilities predicted by using our formula and those obtained by diagonalizing the random Hamiltonian. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This contribution reports on the results of an experiment to study the near-yrast states in selenium isotopes around N=50, following their population in thick-target, multinucleon transfer reactions between an 82Se beam and a 192Os target. Discrete decays from states with spins of 20h and higher are clearly identified in the Os-like fragments. Information on the size of the energy gap between the f5/2 and p3/2 proton orbitals can be inferred from the spectroscopy of the N=48 isotone, 82Se. The experiment results for the level schemes for 80,82Se derived in the current work are compared with restricted-basis shell model calculations, which give a good description of the yrast sequences of these nuclei using a basis space limited to excitations in the (p3/2 , p1/2 , g9/2 ) neutron and (f5/2 , p3/2 , p1/2 ) proton orbitals. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The electric dipole moments for the lowest 1 /2+ states of Xe and Ba isotopes are calculated in terms of the nuclear shell model, which includes two-body nucleón interactions violating parity and time-reversal invariance. Using the wave functions thus obtained, the nuclear electric dipole moments arising from the intrinsic nucleón electric dipole moments and also from asymmetric charge distribution are calculated. The upper limits for the nuclear electric dipole moments of Xe and Ba isotopes are estimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A standard method is outlined for determining volcanic glass content in Andisols. A prototype of the standard method was tested on six samples by laboratories in Japan, the United States and New Zealand. There was good agreement on the glass content for one sample but varying amounts of glass were recorded in the others. Differences in volcanic glass contents were due to conscious departures from the standard method, inadequate chemical pretreatment, varying interpretations of what should be counted as glass, and identification problems. There was, however, a consensus on how five out of the six soils sampled should be classified according to the Andisol proposal of 1988. Modifications to the method are proposed which should allow different operators to achieve more consistent results.

The nuclear wave functions beyond'mean-field theories are calculated in terms of the nuclear shell model, which contains two-body interactions violating parity and time-reversal invariance. Using wave functions thus obtained the Schiff moments for the lowest l/2+ states of Xe isotopes are calculated.
