ObjectiveMaternal abnormal fatty acid desaturation has previously been linked to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, few studies have investigated this relationship longitudinally throughout pregnancy. In this study, we investigated the relationship between GDM and desaturase activities across the pregnancy trimesters.MethodsA total of 661 women (GDM = 189, non-GDM = 472) were selected from the Complex Lipids in Mothers and Babies (CLIMB) cohort study. Clinical information and maternal serum were collected at 11–14, 22–28, and 32–34 weeks of gestation. Totally, 20 serum fatty acids were quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis at each timepoint. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) product-to-precursor ratios were used to estimate desaturase and elongase activities including delta-5 desaturase, delta-6 desaturase, stearoyl-CoA desaturase, and elongase.ResultsAfter adjusting for major potential confounders including maternal age, BMI, primiparity, smoking, and alcohol consumption, we observed a significant increase in the levels of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and eicosatrienoic acid (DGLA) in the first trimester of women with GDM, whereas GLA and DGLA were reduced in the third trimester, when compared to the non-GDM group. Arachidonic acid (AA) showed an upward trend in the GDM group throughout pregnancy. Estimated delta-6 desaturase and delta-5 desaturase activity were elevated in the first trimester (OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.03–1.91; OR = 0.56, 95% CI 0.32–0.96) but attenuated in the third trimester (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.58–1.07; OR = 2.64, 95% CI 1.46–4.78) in GDM pregnancies, respective to controls. Estimated delta-9–18 desaturase activity (OR = 3.70, 95% CI 1.49–9.19) was increased in women with GDM in later pregnancy.ConclusionsOur study highlights the potential importance of fatty acid desaturase activities, particularly estimated delta-5 desaturase and delta-9–18 desaturase in the pathophysiology of GDM. These findings may have applications for the early diagnosis and management of GDM.

In this paper, we consider the inverse problem for identifying the initial value problem of the time–space fractional nonlinear diffusion equation. The uniqueness of the solution is proved by taking the fixed point theorem of Banach compression, and the ill-posedness of the problem is analyzed through the exact solution. The quasi-boundary regularization method is chosen to solve the ill-posed problem, and the error estimate between the regularization solution and the exact solution is given. Moreover, several numerical examples are chosen to prove the effectiveness of the quasi-boundary regularization method. Finally, our method can be used to solve high dimensional time–space fractional nonlinear diffusion equation, especially in cylindrical and spherical symmetric regions.

The photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection method, as a potential strategy for Cu2+ detection, has garnered widespread attention. In this paper, we present a PEC sensing platform using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as the conversion light source and CdTe quantum dots (QDs) as the photoactive material for the detection of Cu2+ in solution. When irradiated with a 980 nm light source, the UCNPs will absorb the 980 nm laser and emit fluorescence around 550 nm, which is then absorbed by the CdTe QDs. This absorption leads to electron-hole separation, with electrons transferring through the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. In the presence of Cu2+, the Cu2+ will be reduced to Cu+ by the electrons generated by the CdTe QDs, thereby hindering the transfer of electrons from the CdTe QDs to the ITO electrode and resulting in a reduction in current. The photocurrent continuously decreases with increasing Cu2+ concentration and shows a good linear relationship with Cu2+ concentration in the range of 1 µM to 25 µM. Background: The incidence of excessive weight gain during pregnancy continues to increase. Our aim was to compare pregnancy outcomes at different trimesters and different classification criteria of gestational weight gain (GWG) and to examine whether GWG was correlated with adverse outcomes in the population of Southwest China. Methods: In the randomized controlled trial of Complex Lipids in Mothers and Babies (CLIMB) conducted in Chongqing, China, data from 1273 women was analyzed. We used two criteria to define GWG as insufficient, appropriate or excessive. The first was based on Chinese, Asian, European Body Mass Index (BMI) and US Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines. The second was based on the quantiles of GWG of the subjects studied. Results: After adjusting for confounding factors, excessive GWG during gestational periods 12–33 weeks and 12 weeks to delivery was linked to the occurrence of large for gestational age (LGA) infants. The 12 weeks to delivery group was linked to the occurrence of macrosomia, and all periods studied (12–33 weeks, 12 weeks to delivery, and 33 weeks to delivery) were associated with an increased incidence of C-section. Insufficient GWG during 12–33 weeks was associated with the occurrence of small gestational age (SGA) infants. Conclusions: Our results support that inappropriate GWG during specific gestational periods was associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes among women in southwestern China. Sheep birth and weaning weights indicate their growth and survival. Thus, identifying molecular genetic markers for early body weight is important in sheep breeding. Pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) is important for regulating birth weight and body length in mammals; however, its relationship with sheep body weight remains unknown. Here, the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of the Hu sheep PLAG1 gene was cloned, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were screened, genotype–early body weight relationships were analyzed, and the possible molecular mechanism was explored. PLAG1 3′-UTR sequences with five forms of base sequences plus poly(A) tails were detected in Hu sheep and the g.8795C>T mutation was identified. Luciferase reporter assay indicated that the g.8795C>T mutation influenced PLAG1 post-transcriptional activity. miRBase prediction showed that the g.8795C>T mutation was located in the miR-139 seed sequence binding region, and miR-139 overexpression significantly decreased both PLAG1-CC and PLAG1-TT activities. Moreover, the luciferase activity of PLAG1-CC was significantly lower than that of the PLAG1-TT, but miR-139 inhibition substantially increased both PLAG1-CC and PLAG1-TT luciferase activities, suggesting that PLAG1 is the target gene of miR-139. Thus, the g.8795C>T mutation upregulates PLAG1 expression by weakening its binding with miR-139, promoting PLAG1 expression, and increasing Hu sheep birth and weaning weights.

In this manuscript, we study the inverse problem for identifying the initial value of a time-fractional diffusion equation in an axisymmetric region. This is an ill-posed problem, i.e., the solution does not depend continuously on the data. We choose the Landweber iterative regularization method to solve this problem. Under the a priori and the a posteriori regularization parameter choice rules, we present the error estimates between the regularization solutions and the exact solution. We present some examples to show this method’s effectiveness.

Traffic noise does great harm to the physical and mental health of humans, which has become the main source of noise pollution, making sound absorption materials highly in demand. Fibrous sound-absorbing materials are widely used in controlling traffic noise pollution; nevertheless, due to the monotonic internal structure and large fiber diameter, they suffer poor mechanical properties and sound absorption performance. Herein, we develop a credible way to create flame-retardant fibrous sound absorption sponges by humidity-assisted electrospinning and an in-situ crosslinking approach. The obtained fibrous sponges possess outstanding superelastic and hydrophobic properties. Most importantly, fluffy fiber networks endow sponges with good low-frequency sound-absorbing properties (noise reduction coefficient or NRC of 0.51) and lightweight features (density of 9 mg cm−3) compared with commercial and reported sound-absorbing materials. Background and Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of minocycline, vonoprazan, amoxicillin, and bismuth quadruple therapy for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) treatment. Methods: From August 2022 to May 2023, clinical data were collected from patients who received H. pylori eradication treatment at West China Fourth Hospital, Sichuan University. One group received the MVAB regimen (amoxicillin, minocycline, vonoprazan, and colloidal bismuth pectin), while another group received the FOAB regimen (amoxicillin, furazolidone, omeprazole, and colloidal bismuth pectin), both administered for 14 days. Follow‐up assessments of safety and compliance were conducted within 1 week after treatment completion. One and a half months after treatment, the success of eradication was evaluated using the urea breath test. Results: For the MVAB regimen as a first‐line treatment, the eradication rate was 90.1% (127/141, 95% CI: 85.1–95.1%) in the ITT analysis and 93.4% (127/136, 95% CI: 89.2–97.6%) in the PP analysis as a first‐line treatment. As a second‐line treatment, the eradication rate was 91.3% (21/23, 95% CI: 78.8–103.8%) in both analyses. For the FOAB regimen as a first‐line treatment, the eradication rate was 98.0% (50/51, 95% CI: 94.1–101.2%) in the ITT analysis and 100% (50/50, 95% CI: 100%) in the PP analysis. As a second‐line treatment, the eradication rate was 100% (6/6, 95% CI: 100%) in both analyses. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse events between the two groups (MVAB regimen: 5.5% and FOAB regimen: 8.8%; P > 0.05). Following the recent report by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. [Nature 615, 244–250 (2023)] of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium trihydride (LuH3−δNε), significant debate has emerged surrounding the composition and interpretation of the observed sharp resistance drop. Here, we meticulously revisit these claims through comprehensive characterization and investigations. We definitively identify the reported material as lutetium dihydride (LuH2), resolving the ambiguity surrounding its composition. Under similar conditions (270–295 K and 1–2 GPa), we replicate the reported sharp decrease in electrical resistance with a 30% success rate, aligning with the observations by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. However, our extensive investigations reveal this phenomenon to be a novel pressure-induced metal-to-metal transition intrinsic to LuH2, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, nitrogen doping exerts minimal impact on this transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of LuH2 and LuH3, but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in these lutetium hydride systems. These findings pave the way for future research on lutetium hydride systems, while emphasizing the crucial importance of rigorous verification in claims of ambient-temperature superconductivity. Ultralight oxide ceramic nanofiber aerogels are widely used as thermal protection materials due to their excellent structural and functional properties. However, the presence of numerous pore defects in nanofibers can easily lead to brittle fracture or even pulverization of nanofiber aerogels due to stress concentration under external force, and this problem might lead to catastrophic accidents, which is currently a great challenge for oxide ceramic nanofiber aerogels currently. Here, we propose a pore defect regulation strategy, which realizes the effective regulation of microstructure on a ceramic nanofiber by strictly controlling the content of organic components in the ceramic nanofiber precursor, thus avoiding generating numerous pore defects during the ceramization process. The zirconia ceramic nanofiber aerogel prepared as a proof-of-concept exhibits temperature-invariant superelasticity (up to 1300 °C) and fatigue resistance against thousands of compressions, which remains superelastic after 1 week of holding time at 1000 °C, and the thermal conductivity is only 0.026 W m–1 K–1. This research provides insights into developing advanced oxide ceramic materials that can be used for long periods of time in high-temperature environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Human migration facilitate the spread of tuberculosis (TB). Migrants face an increased risk of TB infection. In this study, we aim to explore the spatial inequity of sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB (SS + PTB) in China; and the spatial heterogeneity between SS + PTB and internal migration. Methods Notified SS + PTB cases in 31 provinces in mainland China were obtained from the national web-based PTB surveillance system database. Internal migrant data were extracted from the report on China’s migrant population development. Spatial autocorrelations were explored using the global Moran’s statistic and local indicators of spatial association. The spatial variation in temporal trends was performed using Kulldorff’s scan statistic. Fixed effect and spatial autoregressive models were used to explore the spatial inequity between SS + PTB and internal migration. Results A total of 2 380 233 SS + PTB cases were reported in China between 2011 and 2017, of which, 1 716 382 (72.11%) were male and 663 851 (27.89%) were female. Over 70% of internal migrants were from rural households and had lower income and less education. The spatial variation in temporal trend results showed that there was an 9.9% average annual decrease in the notification rate of SS + PTB from 2011 to 2017; and spatial clustering of SS + PTB cases was mainly located in western and southern China. The spatial autocorrelation results revealed spatial clustering of internal migration each year (2011–2017), and the clusters were stable within most provinces. Internal emigration, urban-to-rural migration and GDP per capita were significantly associated with SS + PTB, further, internal emigration could explain more variation in SS + PTB in the eastern region in mainland. However, internal immigration and rural-to-urban migration were not significantly associated with SS + PTB across China. Conclusions Our study found the spatial inequity between SS + PTB and internal migration. Internal emigration, urban-to-rural migration and GDP per capita were statistically associated with SS + PTB; the negative association was identified between internal emigration, urban-to-rural migration and SS + PTB. Further, we found those migrants with lower income and less education, and most of them were from rural households. These findings can help stakeholders to implement effective PTB control strategies for areas at high risk of PTB and those with high rates of internal migration.

The inorganic elements have unique properties in biochemical processes in humans. An increasing number of pathologies have been associated with essential element ions, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Hair has become an attractive clinical specimen for studying the longitudinal exposure to elements from the external environment. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with nitric acid (HNO3) digestion is the most common approach for determining inorganic elements from human hair. This study aims to optimize the digestion method for the absolute quantitation of 52 elements using ICP-MS, for a large cohort study in human hair. Five different HNO3 (65%) digestion methods were investigated and evaluated for their internal standard solution stability, reproducibility, element coverage, and standard solution recovery efficiency, namely, room temperature for 24 h (RT), 90°C for 4 h (T90), ultrasonic-assisted digestion (UltraS), programmed digestion of microwave digestion (MicroD), and ordinary microwave oven digestion (O-MicroD). Our results demonstrated that O-MicroD, MicroD, and RT were the best performing digestion methods for coefficient of variation (CV) scores, coverage, and recovery efficiency, respectively. In particular, the O-MicroD method detected multiple elements in a small quantity of hair (3 mg), with minimum nitric acid usage (200 μl) and a short digestion time (30 min). The O-MicroD method had excellent reproducibility, as demonstrated by a continuous thousand injections of hair samples with three internal standards (CV: 103Rh = 3.59%, 115In = 3.61%, and 209Bi = 6.31%). Future studies of the elemental content of hair should carefully select their digestion method to meet the primary purpose of their study.
