The research status of the influences of fillers on the corrosive resistance of anti - corrosive coatings at home and abroad in recent years was briefly described. And the research progress of the effect of dispersion processes, types, shapes, and addition amounts of fillers on the performance of anti - corrosive coatings was summarized. Then, the effects of four kinds of filler modification technologies on the corrosive resistance of anti - corrosive coatings were emphatically described. Finally, in order to provide theoretical basis and technical support for the development of environmentally friendly anti - corrosive coatings and the formulation of anti - corrosive measures for oil and gas field pipelines, the mechanism of the fillers to improve the corrosion resistance of the coating was discussed.

Abstract Background Ticks, which are ectoparasites of animals, may carry multiple pathogens. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is an important bovine parasite in China. However, the midgut microbiome of R. microplus from China has not been characterized via metagenomic methods. Methods Rhipicephalus microplus were collected from cattle in the city of Changsha in Hunan province, China. The DNA of the midgut contents was extracted from fully engorged adult female R. microplus. A DNA library was constructed and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq sequencing platform. SOAPdenovo software was used to assemble and analyze the clean data. The latent class analysis algorithm applied to system classification by MEGAN software was used to annotate the information on the species’ sequences. DIAMOND software was used to compare unigenes with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database, and functional annotation was carried out based on the results of the comparison. Results The dominant phyla in the five samples were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, Anaplasma, Enterococcus, Shigella, Lactobacillus, Brachyspira, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Bacillus, and Lactococcus were the dominant genera in the five samples. The endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia was also detected in all of the samples. Mycobacterium malmesburyense, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Enterococcus faecium, Shigella sonnei, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus casei, Brachyspira hampsonii, Pseudomonas syringae, Enterobacter cloacae, and Lactococcus garvieae were the dominant species in the five samples. In addition to these bacterial species, we also detected some eukaryotes, such as Rhizophagus irregularis, Enterospora canceri, Smittium culicis, Zancudomyces culisetae, Trachipleistophora hominis, and viruses such as orf virus, human endogenous retrovirus type W, enzootic nasal tumor virus of goats, bovine retrovirus CH15, and galidia endogenous retrovirus in all of the samples at the species level. The results of the annotated KEGG pathway predictions for the gene functions of the midgut microflora of R. microplus indicated genes involved in lipid and amino acid metabolism, infectious diseases (e.g., Streptococcus pneumonia infection, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, Shigella sonnei infection, Salmonella enterica infection, and pathogenic Escherichia coli infection), and cancer. Conclusions Our study revealed that the midgut microbiome of R. microplus is not only composed of a large number of bacteria, but that a portion also comprises eukaryotes and viruses. The data presented here enhance our understanding of this tick’s midgut microbiome and provide fundamental information for the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Graphical Abstract

Genomic changes in Mycoplasma pneumoniae caused by adaptation to environmental or ecologic pressures are poorly understood. We collected M. pneumoniae from children who had confirmed pneumonia in Taiwan during 2017–2020. We used whole-genome sequencing to compare these isolates with a worldwide collection of current and historical clinical strains for characterizing population structures. A phylogenetic tree for 284 strains showed that all sequenced strains consisted of 5 clades: T1–1 (sequence type [ST]1), T1–2 (mainly ST3), T1–3 (ST17), T2–1 (mainly ST2), and T2–2 (mainly ST14). We identified a putative recombination block containing 6 genes (MPN366‒371). Macrolide resistance involving 23S rRNA mutations was detected for each clade. Clonal expansion of macrolide resistance occurred mostly within subtype 1 strains, of which clade T1–2 showed the highest recombination rate and genome diversity. Functional characterization of recombined regions provided clarification of the biologic role of these recombination events in the evolution of M. pneumoniae.

Speech frequency following responses (sFFRs) are increasingly used in translational auditory research. Statistically-based automated sFFR detection could aid response identification and provide a basis for stopping rules when recording responses in clinical and/or research applications. In this brief report, sFFRs were measured from 18 normal hearing adult listeners in quiet and speech-shaped noise. Two statistically-based automated response detection methods, the F-test and Hotelling’s T2 (HT2) test, were compared based on detection accuracy and test time. Similar detection accuracy across statistical tests and conditions was observed, although the HT2 test time was less variable. These findings suggest that automated sFFR detection is robust for responses recorded in quiet and speech-shaped noise using either the F-test or HT2 test. Future studies evaluating test performance with different stimuli and maskers are warranted to determine if the interchangeability of test performance extends to these conditions.

Introduction: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is one of the major histopathological types of non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including solid, acinar, lepidic, papillary and micropapillary subtypes. Increasing evidence has shown that micropapillary LUAD is positively associated with a higher percentage of driver gene mutations, a higher incidence of metastasis and a poorer prognosis, while lepidic LUAD has a relatively better prognosis. However, the novel genetic change and its underlying mechanism in the progression of micropapillary LUAD have not been exactly determined. Methods: A total of 181 patients with LUAD who underwent surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Huzhou University from January 2020 to December 2022 were enrolled. Three predominant lepidic and three predominant micropapillary LUAD tissue samples were carried out using whole‐exome sequencing. Comprehensive analysis of genomic variations and the difference between lepidic and micropapillary LUAD was performed. In addition, the TMEM229A Q200del mutation was verified using our cohort and TCGA‐LUAD datasets. The correlations between the TMEM229A Q200del mutation and the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with LUAD were further analyzed. The functions and mechanisms of TMEM229A Q200del on NSCLC cell proliferation and migration were also determined. Results: The frequency of genomic changes in patients with micropapillary LUAD was higher than that in patients with lepidic LUAD. Mutations in EGFR, ATXN2, C14orf180, MUC12, NOTCH1, and PKD1L2 were concomitantly detected in three predominant micropapillary and three predominant lepidic LUAD cases. The TMEM229A Q200del mutation was only mutated in lepidic LUAD. Additionally, the TMEM229A Q200del mutation had occurred in 16 (8.8%) patients, and not found TMEM229A R76H and M346T mutations in our cohort, while TMEM229A mutations (R76H, M346T, and Q200del) occurred only in 1.0% of the TCGA‐LUAD cohort. Further correlation analysis between the TMEM229A Q200del mutation and clinicopathological characteristics suggested that a lower frequency of the Q200del mutation was significantly associated with positive lymph node metastasis, advanced TNM stage, positive cancer thrombus, and pathological features. Finally, overexpression of TMEM229A Q200del suppressed NSCLC cell proliferation and migration in vitro. Mechanistically, overexpression of TMEM229A and TMEM229A Q200del both reduced the expression level of phosphorylated (p)‐ERK and p‐AKT (Ser473), and the reduced protein level of p‐ERK in the TMEM229A Q200del group was more pronounced compared to the TMEM229A group. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the TMEM229A Q200del mutant may play a protective role in the progression of LUAD via inactivating ERK pathway, providing a potential therapeutic target in LUAD. We experimentally demonstrated that composites, being effective in optimizing the thermoelectric performance, can also enhance photothermoelectric effects in this work. In detail, we employed an alternating-growth in chemical-vapor-transport to grow the SnSe–SnSe2 composite crystals. The photo-responsivities of SnSe–SnSe2 (atomic-weight-ratio as 44%–56%) composite are comparable to SnSe crystals in the visible band (444 and 532 nm). However, the responsivities of SnSe–SnSe2 have remarkable 27.3% enhancement than those of SnSe crystal at the near-infrared band (1310 and 1550 nm). Supported by optical spectroscopy and theoretical electronic band structure, the enhanced optical responsivity of SnSe–SnSe2 composites is due to the formation of P–N junctions at interfaces between SnSe and SnSe2, leading to more optical transition channels and corresponding optical absorptions in near-infrared band. Our work verifies that hetero-junction formed among constituent compounds in composites is effective in optimizing the photothermoelectric response of thermoelectric materials in certain electromagnetic bands, paving the way to develop photoelectric detection devices. Infiltrative non-GBM gliomas are common primary intracranial malignancies, and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended for most adult patients diagnosed with this disease to enhance local control and prolong intracranial progression-free survival (PFS). However, RT-related neurocognitive function (NCF) consequences should not be ignored. Early neurocognitive decline principally includes episodic memory, associated significantly with functions of the hippocampus. This prospective study aims to investigate the impact of adjuvant brain irradiation on neurocognitive performances and relevant oncological outcomes. Twenty-five patients with intracranial infiltrative non-GBM gliomas were enrolled when postoperative adjuvant RT was recommended. All recruited patients should receive baseline brain magnetic resonance imaging, and neuropsychological assessments before and 4 months after the RT course. A battery of neuropsychological measures, mainly including executive functions, memory, psychomotor speed and visuoconstructive ability, was used to evaluate NCFs of interest. Analyzing the delta values between post-irradiation and baseline NCF scores, we observed a robust trend reflecting cognitive stabilization rather than deterioration in almost all NCF. Both verbal and visual memory functions exhibited significant differences in the corresponding scaled scores (Z = −2.722, p =.006, regarding verbal memory; Z = −2.246, p =.025, concerning non-verbal memory). Moreover, patients' neuropsychological performances associated with psychomotor speed and executive functions also disclosed a tendency toward stabilization/improvement. This prospective study demonstrated that patients with infiltrative non-GBM exhibited a marked tendency toward neurocognitive stabilization after receiving postoperative adjuvant RT. Objectives: Febrile disease and age of children were associated with a variation in hemoglobin (Hb) level. Both CRP and Hb serve as laboratory markers that offer valuable insights into a patient’s health, particularly in relation to inflammation and specific medical conditions. Although a direct correlation between CRP and Hb levels is not established, the relationship between these markers has garnered academic attention and investigation. This study aimed to determine updated reference ranges for Hb levels for age and investigated its correlation with CRP in febrile children under the age of 18. Methods: This is a cohort study of in Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals conducted from January 2010 to December 2019. Blood samples were collected from 98,572 febrile children who were or had been admitted in the pediatric emergency department. The parameters of individuals were presented as the mean ± standard deviation or 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles. We also determined the variation of Hb and Z score of Hb between CRP levels in febrile children. Result: We observed that the Hb levels were the highest immediately after birth and subsequently underwent a rapid decline, reaching their lowest point at around 1–2 months of age, and followed by a steady increment in Hb levels throughout childhood and adolescence. In addition, there was a significant and wide variation in Hb levels during the infant period. It revealed a significant association between higher CRP levels and lower Hb levels or a more negative Z score of Hb across all age subgroups. Moreover, in patients with bacteremia, CRP levels were higher, Hb concentrations were lower, and Z scores of Hb were also lower compared to the non-bacteremia group. Furthermore, the bacteremia group exhibited a more substantial negative correlation between CRP levels and a Z score of Hb (r = −0.41, p < 0.001) compared to the non-bacteremia group (r = −0.115, p < 0.049). Conclusion: The study findings revealed that the Hb references varied depending on the age of the children and their CRP levels. In addition, we established new reference values for Hb and its Z scores and explore their relationship with CRP. It provides valuable insights into the Hb status and its potential association with inflammation in febrile pediatric patients.

Mitochondrial translocation of hTERT functions in the process of apoptosis, immortalization and drug resistance. Control of hTERT is a potential breakthrough in the treatment of diseases.

BackgroundHyperkalemia is a critical condition, especially in intensive care units. So far, there have been no accurate and noninvasive methods for recognizing hyperkalemia events on ambulatory electrocardiogram monitors. ObjectiveThis study aimed to improve the accuracy of hyperkalemia predictions from ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors using a personalized transfer learning method; this would be done by training a generic model and refining it with personal data. MethodsThis retrospective cohort study used open source data from the Waveform Database Matched Subset of the Medical Information Mart From Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III). We included patients with multiple serum potassium test results and matched ECG data from the MIMIC-III database. A 1D convolutional neural network–based deep learning model was first developed to predict hyperkalemia in a generic population. Once the model achieved a state-of-the-art performance, it was used in an active transfer learning process to perform patient-adaptive heartbeat classification tasks. ResultsThe results show that by acquiring data from each new patient, the personalized model can improve the accuracy of hyperkalemia detection significantly, from an average of 0.604 (SD 0.211) to 0.980 (SD 0.078), when compared with the generic model. Moreover, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve level improved from 0.729 (SD 0.240) to 0.945 (SD 0.094). ConclusionsBy using the deep transfer learning method, we were able to build a clinical standard model for hyperkalemia detection using ambulatory ECG monitors. These findings could potentially be extended to applications that continuously monitor one’s ECGs for early alerts of hyperkalemia and help avoid unnecessary blood tests.

Spermatogenesis and sperm maturation are complex and highly ordered biological processes. Any failure or disorder in these processes can cause defects in sperm morphology, motility, and fertilization ability. Cathepsin B (CTSB) is involved in the regulation of a variety of pathological processes. In the present study, we found that CTSB was abundantly expressed in the male reproductive system, however, the specific role of CTSB in regulating spermatogenesis and sperm maturation remained elusive. Hence, we generated Ctsb-/- mice using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. In Ctsb-/- mice, sperm count was significantly decreased while the level of morphologically abnormal sperm was markedly increased. Additionally, these mice had significantly lower levels of progressive motility sperm and elevated levels of immobilized sperm. Histological analysis showed slight vacuolization in the testis epithelium, as well as the loss of epididymal epithelium cells. Further investigation showed that autophagic activity was inhibited and apoptotic activity was increased in both the testis and epididymis of Ctsb-/- mice. Together, our findings demonstrate that CTSB plays an important role in spermatogenesis and sperm maturation in mice.

Fear memory retrieval is relevant to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One of the hallmark symptoms of PTSD is the repeated retrieval and re-experiencing of the initial fear memory even long after the traumatic event has occurred. Women are nearly twice as likely to develop PTSD following a trauma than men, thus sex differences in the retrieval of fear memories is highly relevant for understanding the development and maintenance of PTSD. In the current study, we aimed to examine sex differences in the retrieval and extinction of either recent or remote fear memories. To do so, we conditioned male and female rats either 1 day (recent) or 28 days (remote) prior to testing retrieval and extinction. While there was no effect of sex or retention interval on initial retrieval, we found that remotely conditioned females exhibited higher rates of freezing than remotely conditioned males in later retrieval/extinction sessions, suggesting a sex difference in the retrieval and/or extinction of remote, but not recent, fear memories. Overall, these results are the first to demonstrate a sex difference in the extinction of remote fear memory, and this may contribute to the differential expression of fear-related disorders like PTSD in men and women.
