Abstract Background To evaluate a novel intraoperative localization technique utilizing temporary pulmonary arteriovenous occlusion for enhancing the precision of sublobar resections in early‐stage NSCLC. Methods Conducted from January to November 2023, this study involved 140 patients. During the surgery, key pulmonary vessels were identified using preoperative three‐dimensional (3D) imaging and temporarily occluded with noninvasive clamps to isolate the target lung segment. Following vascular occlusion, indocyanine green (ICG) was administered intravenously to precisely delineate the resection margins. After visually confirming the marked areas, the clamps were released, and a targeted partial resection was performed on the delineated segment. Surgical data, including operation times, surgical margins, and hospitalization costs, were collected and compared with those from a historical control group of 110 patients who underwent traditional pulmonary wedge resections. Abstract Central blood pressure confers cardiovascular risk prediction ability, but whether the association between central systolic blood pressure (cSBP) and cardiovascular endpoints is independent of peripheral systolic blood pressure (pSBP) remains controversial. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aim to investigate the associations between cSBP and cardiovascular endpoints in models including and excluding pSBP, respectively. Observational studies assessing the risk of composite cardiovascular endpoints with baseline cSBP were searched in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library to May 31, 2022. Risk of bias was assessed by the Newcastle‐Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale, and random‐effects models were used to pool estimates. Finally, 48 200 participants from 19 studies with a mean age of 59.0 ± 6.9 years were included. Per 10 mmHg increase of cSBP was associated with higher risk of composite cardiovascular outcomes (risk ratio [RR]: 1.14 [95%CI 1.08–1.19]) and cardiovascular death (RR: 1.18 [95%CI 1.08–1.30]), and the associations still existed after adjusting for pSBP (RR: 1.13 [95%CI 1.05–1.21] for composite cardiovascular endpoints; RR: 1.25 [95%CI 1.09–1.43] for cardiovascular death). In pSBP‐unadjusted studies, increased cSBP was also associated with higher risk of all‐cause mortality and stroke, but not in the pSBP‐adjusted studies. Both cSBP and pSBP were similarly significantly associated with composite cardiovascular endpoints in models containing them separately and simultaneously. cSBP was significantly associated with cardiovascular events, independently of pSBP. Central or peripheral SBP could supplement cardiovascular risk assessment besides each other.

Abstract The leaf beetle Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an effective biological control agent of the common ragweed. Here, we assembled a chromosome-level genome of the O. communa by combining Illumina, Nanopore, and Hi-C sequencing technologies. The genome size of the final genome assembly is 733.1 Mb, encompassing 17 chromosomes, with an improved contig N50 of 7.05 Mb compared to the original version. Genome annotation reveals 25,873 protein-coding genes, with functional annotations available for 22,084 genes (85.35%). Non-coding sequence annotation identified 204 rRNAs, 626 tRNAs, and 1791 small RNAs. Repetitive elements occupy 414.41 Mb, constituting 57.76% of the genome. This high-quality genome is fundamental for advancing biological control strategies employing O. communa.

Abstract Here, we present the whole genome sequence of Bt S2160-1, a potential alternative to the mosquitocidal model strain, Bti. One chromosome genome and four mega-plasmids were contained in Bt S2160-1, and 13 predicted genes encoding predicted insecticidal crystal proteins were identified clustered on one plasmid pS2160-1p2 containing two pathogenic islands (PAIs) designed as PAI-1 (Cry54Ba, Cry30Ea4, Cry69Aa-like, Cry50Ba2-like, Cry4Ca1-like, Cry30Ga2, Cry71Aa-like, Cry72Aa-like, Cry70Aa-like, Cyt1Da2-like and Vpb4C1-like) and PAI-2 (Cyt1Aa-like, and Tpp80Aa1-like). The clusters appear to represent mosquitocidal toxin islands similar to pathogenicity islands. Transcription/translation of 10 of the 13 predicted genes was confirmed by whole-proteome analysis using LTQ-Orbitrap LC–MS/MS. In summary, the present study identified the existence of a mosquitocidal toxin island in Bacillus thuringiensis, and provides important genomic information for understanding the insecticidal mechanism of B. thuringiensis.

Abstract Background This study investigated the optimal concentration of ropivacaine epidural anesthesia for clinical use in percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) by comparing the effects of different concentrations. Methods Seventy patients scheduled for their first PTED procedure were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Patients were randomized to receive ropivacaine at varying concentrations (0.3% or 0.4%). Primary outcome measures included the numeric rating scale (NRS) and hip extension level (HEL). Secondary outcome measures included intraoperative fentanyl dosage and postoperative complications. Results One patient withdrew due to severe postoperative complications. The remaining 69 patients were allocated to the 0.3% (n = 34) and 0.4% (n = 35) groups, respectively. Baseline characteristics showed no significant differences between the two groups (P > 0.05). Abstract Background Endometriosis is considered as a systemic disease with the presence of proinflammatory cytokines in the circulation, which drives hypercoagulable state of endometriosis. Currently, endometriosis is classified into four stages: I (minimal), II (mild), III (moderate) and IV (severe). The aim of this study is to investigate the correlations between inflammatory markers and coagulation factors in patients diagnosed of endometriosis with stage IV. Methods This retrospective case–control study included 171 endometriosis patients with stage IV and 184 controls. Continuous data were expressed by mean ± standard deviation. Mann–Whitney U and χ2 tests were used to compare the medians and frequencies among the groups. Spearman analysis was conducted to determine the correlation among the measured parameters. The diagnostic values of the parameters differentiating endometriomas were tested by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results The time of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) was decreased and the concentration of fibrinogen (FIB) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were increased in women of endometriosis with stage IV. The APTT were negatively correlated with NLR while the concentrations of FIB were positively correlated with NLR. The ROC analysis showed that the Area under the curve (AUC) of FIB was 0.766 (95% confidence interval:0.717–0.814) with sensitivity and specificity reaching 86.5 and 60.9%, respectively. The AUC of CA125 and CA199 was 0.638 (95% confidence interval: 0.578–0.697), 0.71 (95% confidence interval: 0.656–0.763) with sensitivity and specificity reaching 40.9 and 91.8%, 80.7 and 56.5% respectively. The combination of these factors showed the highest AUC of 0.895 (0.862–0.927) with sensitivity of 88.9% and specificity of 77.7%. Conclusion In the present study, we found that inflammatory factors showed significant correlation with APTT or FIB in endometriosis with stage IV. Moreover, the coagulation factors combined with CA125 and CA199 were more reliable for identifying the endometriosis with stage IV.

Abstract Background Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) pose a significant threat to public health. Intensive Care Units (ICU), characterized by the extensive use of antimicrobial agents and a high prevalence of bacterial resistance, are hotspots for MDRO proliferation. Timely identification of patients at high risk for MDRO can aid in curbing transmission, enhancing patient outcomes, and maintaining the cleanliness of the ICU environment. This study focused on developing a machine learning (ML) model to identify patients at risk of MDRO during the initial phase of their ICU stay. Methods Utilizing patient data from the First Medical Center of the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (PLAGH-ICU) and the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV), the study analyzed variables within 24 h of ICU admission. Machine learning algorithms were applied to these datasets, emphasizing the early detection of MDRO colonization or infection. Model efficacy was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC), alongside internal and external validation sets. Results The study evaluated 3,536 patients in PLAGH-ICU and 34,923 in MIMIC-IV, revealing MDRO prevalence of 11.96% and 8.81%, respectively. Significant differences in ICU and hospital stays, along with mortality rates, were observed between MDRO positive and negative patients. In the temporal validation, the PLAGH-ICU model achieved an AUROC of 0.786 [0.748, 0.825], while the MIMIC-IV model reached 0.744 [0.723, 0.766]. External validation demonstrated reduced model performance across different datasets. Key predictors included biochemical markers and the duration of pre-ICU hospital stay. Conclusions The ML models developed in this study demonstrated their capability in early identification of MDRO risks in ICU patients. Continuous refinement and validation in varied clinical contexts remain essential for future applications.

Constructing the first-class undergraduate specialty, deepening curriculum reform, incorporating innovation and entrepreneurship education throughout the entire talent development process, and consistently enhancing the standard of innovation and entrepreneurship education are crucial approaches to fostering scientific and technological aptitude among college students. This study, according to the nature and characteristics of the course "Comprehensive Utilization of Grain and Oil Processing By-Products", focusing on the objectives of course teaching, under the guidance of the concept of innovation and entrepreneurship education, aims to explore the development and implementation of a practical case teaching method tailored to grain engineering students within the framework of the provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction. By improving challenges such as lecture-based teaching, limited practical links, and one-dimensional assessment, a collaborative education platform of 'trinity' innovation and entrepreneurship teaching is proposed based on the construction idea of "classroom-experiment-practice". This platform emphasizes several improvement initiatives, such as incorporating industry case-inspired teaching, conducting classroom presentations, fostering the development of innovative experimental designs in small groups, cultivating the spirit of scientists, expanding the teaching of science and innovation competitions on the extracurricular activities, implementing multi-dimensional assessment methods, and establishing continuity mechanisms. Our goal is to establish a collaborative platform that nurtures innovation and entrepreneurship through the professional curriculum. Ultimately, this platform seeks to promote balanced development between professional knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, elevating the cultivation of innovative talents in grain engineering.

Ti-5321 alloy formed by laser cladding has good mechanical properties. By subsequent heat treatment of the alloy, not only can rich microstructures be obtained, but its strength, toughness, or damage tolerance performance can also be improved. Four typical microstructures, including basket-weave structure, large layer structure, ultrafine needle-like structure, and rod-like structure were constructed through different heat treatments. Basket-weave structure is composed of slender lamellar α, which has the best plasticity and toughness. Due to the large orientation difference between adjacent lamellar α and the susceptibility to multiple slip during crack propagation, this will greatly increase the crack propagation resistance and the curvature of the crack propagation path, which is beneficial for improving the damage tolerance performance of the alloy. Large layer structure is composed of large layer α and ultrafine needle-like α, with the highest strength. The orientation difference between adjacent large layer α is extremely small and prone to {10–11} pyramidal slip. The crack propagation resistance is reduced, which in turn damages the damage tolerance performance of the alloy. Ultrafine needle-like structure is entirely composed of ultrafine needle-like α, with high strength and extremely low plasticity and toughness. The orientation difference between adjacent needle-like α is single, making it prone to pyramidal slip and first-order pyramidal slip. The strength of rod-like structure matches well with its plasticity and toughness. There are multiple slip systems in rod-like structure and there is significant difference in orientation between adjacent α. Large orientation differences will have certain hindering effect on crack deflection.

The modification of stereoregulated functionalized polymers on the surface of natural rubber (NR) is a challenging task. This work provided a practicable grafting method to design photochromic polymer brushes on the NR surfaces using surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP). The designed photochromic polymer brushes were based on norbornenes with spiropyrin (SP) pendents, and grew from the surface of NR films in the presence of Grubbs 2nd catalyst. The results showed that the grafting rate of polymer brushes with photoisomerization structure reached up to 44.91 %. The modified natural rubber (NR-SP) films exhibited rapid coloring/decolorization property under UV irradiation and visible light. This photochromic property initiated by the light-induced isomerisation of the spiropyran structure and the increased surface energy under light stimuli. NR-SP films exhibited stable photochromic characteristics and outstanding anti-fatigue properties after exposing to over six cycles of consecutive UV/Vis irradiation. A simple and practical strategy for the preparation of highly sensitive photochromic natural rubber materials is proposed and provides a potential application in the fields of information storage and anti-counterfeiting.

ABSTRACT: To effectively assess the extent of the mycotoxin contamination of grapes, a method was developed to analyze 22 mycotoxins by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole/orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS). Samples were extracted and purified using the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) procedure. The extracts were separated on a BEH Shield C18 column (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm), using methanol and water with 0.1% formic acid solution and 2 mmol/L ammonium acetate as the mobile phases. The quantification was performed according to a matrix-matched external standard method. There was a good linear relationship within the respective mass concentration ranges of 22 mycotoxins; the correlation coefficients were not less than 0.998 1. The limit of quantification was 0.3–10.0 μg/kg. Mycotoxin recovery ranged from 68.6% to 109.0%, with a relative standard deviation of 1.28%–12.80%. The method is simple, rapid, highly sensitive, and accurate, making it useful for screening grapes for common and emerging mycotoxins.

AbstractAs a processed product of traditional Chinese medicine Curcumae Radix, Curcumae Radix Carbonisata (CRC) has been widely used in the treatment of liver diseases in ancient medical books. In this study, novel carbon dots (CDs) extending from 1.0 to 4.5 nm were separated from fluid extricates of CRC. Meanwhile, a liver fibrosis model induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was utilized to determine the inhibitory effects of CRC-CDs against liver fibrosis. The results exhibited the CRC-CDs with a quantum yield of 1.34% have a significant inhibitory effect on CCl4-induced liver fibrosis, as demonstrated by improving hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrotic tissue hyperplasia, downregulating the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), total bile acid (TBA), triglyceride (TG), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β in the serum, upregulating the contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), and downregulating the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA), which lays an important foundation for the development of CRC-CDs as a novel drug for the treatment of liver fibrosis, and provide a certain experimental basis for the clinical application of CRC-CDs in the future.

AbstractChinese herbs contain substances that regulate female hormones. Our study confirmed that Zingiberis rhizoma carbonisata contains Zingiberis rhizoma-based carbon dots (ZR-CDs), which exert regulatory effects on serum oestradiol and FSH in mice and show impacts on endometrial growth and follicular development that potentially affect the ability of female fertility. ZR-CDs were characterized to clarify the microstructure, optical features, and functional group characteristics. It shows that ZR-CDs are spherical carbon nanostructures ranging from 0.97 to 2.3 nm in diameter, with fluorescent properties and a surface rich in functional groups. We further investigated the impact of ZR-CDs on oestradiol and FSH in serum, growth, and the development of ovarian and uterine using normal female mice and exogenous oestradiol intervention model. It was observed that ZR-CDs accelerated oestrogen metabolism and attenuated oestradiol-induced endometrial hyperplasia. Simultaneously, ZR-CDs triggered an increase in FSH, even in the presence of high-serum oestradiol that inhibits FSH secretion. Our findings suggest that ZR-CDs could be a potential therapeutic treatment for anovulatory menstruation.

The effect of the void shape on cut blasting is investigated by establishing a damage analysis model for a void using an improved calculation formula for stress on the wall of the void. Additionally, an optimization scheme is provided for the “square void cutting theoretical model.” The vibration effect of the rock mass outside the excavation area is simultaneously monitored, and its validity is substantiated through experimental and simulation-based verification. The findings indicate that the variation of q2sinθ over time aligns with the dynamic loading process of wall stress in holes. Under the influence of longitudinal waves, thin-walled circular damage occurs, and tensile effects from reflected waves are influenced by impedance. In a square void cutting model, two-stage stress waves cause tensile shear damage and inward collapse in the rock mass along hole walls. The explosive energy generated by square holes significantly contributes to fragmentation of rock masses. The circular empty-hole cutting model generates significant vibrations in central areas due to resistance. Vibration velocity in 45° direction for circular holes is lower than that for square voids outside cuts while vibration velocity remains equivalent between circular and square holes at 90° direction.

In the field of drilling in coal mine underground, drilling rate (DR) is one of the most effective indicators for assessing drilling operations. Accurate prediction of DR is a prerequisite for the realization of intelligent drilling in coal mines, which is of great significance for optimizing drilling parameters, reducing operational costs, and ensuring safe and efficient drilling. In the present research, the influence of drilling parameters on DR are investigated and the intelligent prediction methods are developed to achieve accurate DR predictions with different machine learning algorithms based on several drilling parameters, including weight on bit, rotation speed, torque, and drilling depth. Initially, micro-drilling experiments are conducted to analyze the impact of coal rock mechanical properties, weight on bit, rotation speed, and drilling depth on torque and drilling rate. The experimental results indicate that during the underground coal mining drilling process, drilling rate gradually rises with the increasing weight on bit. Under higher rotation speed conditions, the influence of weight on bit on drilling speed becomes more pronounced. Increasing the rotational speed is advantageous for improving drilling speed, but the impact of rotational speed on drilling speed is more significant in softer coal seams. Subsequently, three different machine learning algorithms, namely K–Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Random Forest Regression (RFR), are used to build drilling rate prediction models based on on-site drilling data from underground coal mining, and the hyperparameters of those models are optimized with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method. Finally, the prediction results of three drilling rate models, PSO–KNN, PSO–SVR, and PSO–RFR, are analyzed comparatively. The results show that PSO–RFR model offers the highest accuracy, with R2 of 0.963, MSE of 29.742. On the other hand, the PSO–SVR model exhibits the best robustness, with minimal changes in evaluation metrics after withstanding adversarial attacks. This study is beneficial for the realization of precise DR prediction, providing theoretical support for the optimization of intelligent drilling parameters in underground coal mining operations.

BackgroundPer- and polyfuoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are categorized as persistent organic pollutants and commonly detected in humans, and their toxicity has attracted widespread attention. However, few studies have reported comparison of PFAS levels and potential factors between women pregnant using assisted reproduction technology (ART) and women pregnant naturally. ObjectiveTo analyze and compare serum concentrations and sociodemographic determinants of PFAS in pregnant women conceiving through ART and conceiving naturally from Shanghai. MethodsBased on the China National Birth Cohort (CNBC) in Shanghai from 2017 to 2019, 333 pregnant women conceiving through ART and 689 pregnant women conceiving naturally were recruited during the same period as study subjects. The concentrations of 32 PFAS were measured in early-pregnancy serum of all pregnant women, and four PFAS with the highest co-exposure levels in both groups were included in the subsequent analysis. Multiple linear regression models were performed to evaluate the associations of sociodemographic factors with serum PFAS concentrations in the two groups respectively. Beta coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were exponentiated to calculate the ratio of the geometric mean (GM) of PFAS concentrations after each unit change in the independent variable.ResultsPerfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), 6∶2 chlorinated polyfluoroethersulfonic acid (6∶2 Cl-PFESA), and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) were four major PFAS in serum of pregnant women conceiving through ART and conceiving naturally, and the concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, and 6∶2 Cl-PFESA were higher in pregnant women conceiving through ART than in pregnant women conceiving naturally (P 300000 CNY had lower serum concentrations of PFOA [GM ratio (95%CI): 0.82 (0.72, 0.95) and 0.89 (0.81, 0.97), respectively] and PFHxS [GM ratio (95%CI): 0.66 (0.51, 0.86) and 0.77 (0.66, 0.90), respectively] than those women whose household annual income

BackgroundPesticide exposure may impact the reproductive health of women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, data on pesticide exposure levels in women undergoing ART in China are scarce, and current research on influencing factors is limited. ObjectiveTo evaluate the preconceptional pesticide exposure levels and identify potential determinants among women undergoing ART. MethodsThis study was designed as a cross-sectional survey and recruited 508 women undergoing ART from July 2017 to December 2018 at the fertility clinic of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Gas chromatography/liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to determine the metabolite concentrations of organophosphate pesticides (OPs), pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs), and neonicotinoid pesticides (NEOs) in urine. The sum of molar concentrations of the three pesticide classes (∑2OPs, ∑2PYRs, and ∑2NEOs) were calculated. A questionnaire was used to collect demographic characteristics, dietary habits, and behavioral information. Multiple linear regression was employed to analyze the associations of demographic characteristics, dietary habits, and behavioral variables with the concentrations of pesticide metabolites in urine among the participants. ResultsThe median creatinine-adjusted concentrations of ∑2OPs, ∑2PYRs, and ∑2NEOs in this study were 419.77, 2.95, and 20.36 nmol·g−1, respectively. Sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease （CKD） occurs mainly in patients with end-stage renal disease （ESRD） on hemodialysis. The potential causes are insufficient nutrition intake, protein and energy consumption, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, insulin resistance and uremic toxins. Protein-bound uremic toxin phenol sulfate is an intestinal-derived uremic toxin accumulating in CKD patients. It is difficult to remove through dialysis. It affects the occurrence of sarcopenia through various ways. The review focused upon the mechanisms of sarcopenia caused by indoxyl sulfate.

Background : Triglyceride glucose (TyG) and TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI) are reliable surrogate indices of insulin resistance and used for risk stratification and outcome prediction in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Here, we inserted estimated average glucose (eAG) into the TyG (TyAG) and TyG-BMI (TyAG-BMI) as derived parameters and explored their clinical significance in cardiovascular risk prediction. Methods : This was a population-based cohort study of 9,944 Chinese patients with ASCVD. The baseline admission fasting glucose and A1C-derived eAG values were recorded. Cardiovascular events (CVEs) that occurred during an average of 38.5 months of follow-up were recorded. We stratified the patients into four groups by quartiles of the parameters. Baseline data and outcomes were analyzed. Results : Distribution of the TyAG and TyAG-BMI indices shifted slightly toward higher values (the right side) compared with TyG and TyG-BMI, respectively. Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has played an important role in the rapid growth of medical imaging diagnostic technology, especially in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors owing to its non-invasive characteristics and superior soft tissue contrast. However, brain tumors are characterized by high non-uniformity and non-obvious boundaries in MRI images because of their invasive and highly heterogeneous nature. In addition, the labeling of tumor areas is time-consuming and laborious. Methods: To address these issues, this study uses a residual grouped convolution module, convolutional block attention module, and bilinear interpolation upsampling method to improve the classical segmentation network U-net. The influence of network normalization, loss function, and network depth on segmentation performance is further considered. Results: In the experiments, the Dice score of the proposed segmentation model reached 97.581%, which is 12.438% higher than that of traditional U-net, demonstrating the effective segmentation of MRI brain tumor images. Conclusions: In conclusion, we use the improved U-net network to achieve a good segmentation effect of brain tumor MRI images.

Abstract Background Hypertension (HT) is one of the most common manifestations in patients with catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumors. Although the cardiovascular manifestations of these tumors have been described, there have been no large-scale investigations of the profile of HT and changes in cardiac structure and function that occur in patients with pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL). Materials and methods In this study, we investigated the prevalence of HT and left ventricular remodeling (LVR) in a cohort of 598 patients who underwent surgery for PPGL at our center between January 2001 and April 2022. Information on demographics, reason for hospitalization, medical history, biochemical parameters, findings on echocardiography, and tumor characteristics were recorded. Abstract Background Mediterranean diet rich in polyphenolic compounds holds great promise to prevent and alleviate multiple sclerosis (MS), a central nervous system autoimmune disease associated with gut microbiome dysbiosis. Health-promoting effects of natural polyphenols with low bioavailability could be attributed to gut microbiota reconstruction. However, its underlying mechanism of action remains elusive, resulting in rare therapies have proposed for polyphenol-targeted modulation of gut microbiota for the treatment of MS. Results We found that oral ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol rich in the Mediterranean diet, effectively halted the progression of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the animal model of MS, via regulating a microbiota-metabolites-immunity axis. EA remodeled the gut microbiome composition and particularly increased the relative abundances of short-chain fatty acids -producing bacteria like Alloprevotella. Propionate (C3) was most significantly up-regulated by EA, and integrative modeling revealed a strong negative correlation between Alloprevotella or C3 and the pathological symptoms of EAE. Gut microbiota depletion negated the alleviating effects of EA on EAE, whereas oral administration of Alloprevotella rava mimicked the beneficial effects of EA on EAE. Moreover, EA directly promoted Alloprevotella rava (DSM 22548) growth and C3 production in vitro. The cell-free supernatants of Alloprevotella rava co-culture with EA suppressed Th17 differentiation by modulating acetylation in cell models. C3 can alleviate EAE development, and the mechanism may be through inhibiting HDAC activity and up-regulating acetylation thereby reducing inflammatory cytokines secreted by pathogenic Th17 cells. Conclusions Our study identifies EA as a novel and potentially effective prebiotic for improving MS and other autoimmune diseases via the microbiota-metabolites-immunity axis. Video Abstract

Abstract Objective This scoping review sought to investigate the association between pregnancy-related complications and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among postpartum women, then summarize effective psychological interventions for pregnancy-related PTSD or sub-PTSD. Method Publications in English and Chinese were searched in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, ISI Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WanFang databases using the subject headings of “Stress Disorders, Post-Traumatic”, “Pregnant Women”, and “psychotherapy”. To ensure that as many relevant studies are incorporated as possible, free terms such as prenatal, postnatal, perinatal and gestation were also used. Intervention studies and related cases published by July 1st, 2023, were also searched. Results Twenty-one articles (including 3,901 mothers) were included in this review. Evidence showed that typical psychological interventions exhibited great effect, and family support programs, peer support, online yoga, and music therapy were also effective in reducing risk and improving the psychological well-being of the studied population. Conclusion Fetal abnormalities, miscarriage, premature birth, infants with low birth weights, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and hyperemesis gravidarum are associated with an increased risk of PTSD. Moreover, high-risk pregnant women may benefit from psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It may also be feasible and well-accepted for music therapy and exposure therapy to lessen the intensity of PTSD in mothers.

Abstract Background Childhood obesity is increasingly recognized as a major public health challenge worldwide, and excessive sedentary screen time is emerging as a key risk factor. This study aimed to assess the recreational screen sedentary time of Chinese primary school-aged children and investigate the relationship between screen-related family factors and the outcome variable. Methods Our study used data from a cross-sectional survey collected from fifth-grade students and their parents in Beijing, China, from April to May 2018 (n = 2,373). The questions included basic demographic information, family socioeconomic status, students’ and parents’ sedentary and exercising habits, within-family communicational factors, and health belief patterns. The recreational screen sedentary time of the children was compared across demographic groups. The study employed multivariate linear regression models to examine associations between children’s screen time and various family factors, as well as the moderating effect of overall family communication. Results Our findings revealed an average daily recreational screen sedentary time of 2.4 h among participants. Abstract Background EEG reactivity is a predictor for neurological outcome in comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA); however, its application is limited by variability in stimulus types and visual assessment. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the quantitative analysis of EEG reactivity induced by standardized electrical stimulation and for early prognostication in this population. Methods This prospective observational study recruited post-CA comatose patients in Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University (Beijing, China) between January 2016 and June 2023. EEG reactivity to electrical or traditional pain stimulation was randomly performed via visual and quantitative analysis. Neurological outcome within 6 months was dichotomized as good (Cerebral Performance Categories, CPC 1–2) or poor (CPC 3–5). Results Fifty-eight post-CA comatose patients were admitted, and 52 patients were included in the final analysis, of which 19 (36.5%) had good outcomes. EEG reactivity induced with the electrical stimulation had superior performance to the traditional pain stimulation for good outcome prediction (quantitative analysis: AUC 0.932 vs. 0.849, p = 0.048). When using the electrical stimulation, the AUC of EEG reactivity to predict good outcome by visual analysis was 0.838, increasing to 0.932 by quantitative analysis (p = 0.039). Comparing to the traditional pain stimulation by visual analysis, the AUC of EEG reactivity for good prognostication by the electrical stimulation with quantitative analysis was significantly improved (0.932 vs. 0.770, p = 0.004). Conclusions EEG reactivity induced by the standardized electrical stimulation in combination with quantitative analysis is a promising formula for post-CA comatose patients, with increased predictive accuracy.

MOX (mixed oxide) fuel plays a positive role in promoting sustainable development in nuclear energy. The quantitative determination of plutonium in mixed MOX fuel is also essential to nuclear security and safeguards. In this regard，neutron multiplicity measurement methods serve as crucial non-destructive testing techniques and play a vital role in quantitatively detecting plutonium in MOX fuel. In order to study the factors that influence the quantification process of plutonium，enhance measurement accuracy，and streamline the process，this study develops a comprehensive and specific simulation system for the multiplicity-based plutonium quantification method in MOX fuel. Based on the AWCC device as the basic model (simulation model with a detection efficiency of 23.89% and a die-away time of 45.42 μs)，the combination of MCNP and MATLAB software is utilized to recombine the detector capture times of fission neutrons and (α，n) neutrons obtained from MCNP software with the particle emission time series obtained by MATLAB sampling，forming a complete pulse time series. After receiving the multiplicity moments of fission neutrons in MOX fuel (vs1=2.157，vs2=3.808，vs3=5.283，vi1=2.855，vi2=6.953，vi3=13.899)，simulated pulse sequence acquisition，multiplicity analysis，and quantitative calculation are performed on four samples with different shapes and sizes. Each sample is measured for 300 s with a pre-delay time of 3 μs，a gate width of 54 μs，a long delay of 2 ms，and repeated three time’s measurements. Additionally，the simulated quantitative calculation results 240Pu are compared with the set values. The results indicate that the mass of 240Pu and the α-value obtained through simulated pulse analysis meet the requirement of less than 5% relative error compared to the actual input values. This work provides technical support for data interpretation in the quantitative measurement of plutonium in MOX fuel.

The cuticular wax, acting as the ultimate defense barrier, is essential for the normal morphogenesis of plant organs. Despite this importance, the connection between wax composition and leaf development has not been thoroughly explored. In this study, we characterized a new maize mutant, ragged leaf4 (rgd4), which exhibits crinkled and ragged leaves starting from the sixth leaf stage. The phenotype of rgd4 is conferred by ZmCER1, which encoding an aldehyde decarbonylase involved in wax biosynthesis. ZmCER1 function deficient mutant displayed reduced cuticular wax density and disordered bulliform cells (BCs), while ZmCER1 overexpressing plants exhibited the opposite effects, indicating that ZmCER1 regulates cuticular wax biosynthesis and BCs development. Additionally, as the density of cuticular wax increased, the water loss rate of detached leaf decreases, suggesting that ZmCER1 is positively correlated with plant drought tolerance.

Abstract Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is believed to be associated with a notable disruption of cellular energy metabolism. By detecting the changes of energy metabolites in the serum of patients with pulmonary fibrosis, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic value of energy metabolites in IPF, and further elucidated the mechanism of their involvement in pulmonary fibrosis. Through metabolomics research, it was discovered that the TCA cycle intermediates changed dramatically in IPF patients. In another validation cohort of 55 patients with IPF compared to 19 healthy controls, it was found that succinate, an intermediate product of TCA cycle, has diagnostic and prognostic value in IPF. The cut-off levels of serum succinate were 98.36 μM for distinguishing IPF from healthy controls (sensitivity, 83.64%; specificity, 63.16%; likelihood ratio, 2.27, respectively). Moreover, a high serum succinate level was independently associated with higher rates of disease progression (OR 13.087, 95%CI (2.819–60.761)) and mortality (HR 3.418, 95% CI (1.308–8.927)). In addition, accumulation of succinate and increased expression of the succinate receptor GPR91 were found in both IPF patients and BLM mouse models of pulmonary fibrosis. Reducing succinate accumulation in BLM mice alleviated pulmonary fibrosis and 21d mortality, while exogenous administration of succinate can aggravate pulmonary fibrosis in BLM mice. Furthermore, GPR91 deficiency protected against lung fibrosis caused by BLM. In vitro, succinate promoted the activation of lung fibroblasts by activating ERK pathway through GPR91. In summary, succinate is a promising biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of IPF. The accumulation of succinate may promote fibroblast activation through GPR91 and pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), together with its CagA, has been implicated in causing DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and the development of gastric cancer. Although lncRNA H19 is abundantly expressed in gastric cancer and functions as a pro-oncogene, it remains unclear whether lncRNA H19 contributes to the oncogenic process of H. pylori CagA. This study investigates the role of H19 in the DNA damage response and malignancy induced by H. pylori. It was observed that cells infected with CagA+ H. pylori strain (GZ7/cagA) showed significantly higher H19 expression, resulting in increased γH2A.X and p-ATM expression and decreased p53 and Rad51 expression. Faster cell migration and invasion was also observed, which was reversed by H19 knockdown in H. pylori. YWHAZ was identified as an H19 target protein, and its expression was increased in H19 knockdown cells. GZ7/cagA infection responded to the increased YWHAZ expression induced by H19 knockdown. In addition, H19 knockdown stimulated cells to enter the G2-phase and attenuated the effect of GZ7/cagA infection on the cellular S-phase barrier. The results suggest that H. pylori CagA can upregulate H19 expression, participate in the DNA damage response and promote cell migration and invasion, and possibly affect cell cycle arrest via regulation of YWHAZ.

Abstract Sysmex DI-60 enumerates and classifies leukocytes. Limited research has evaluated the performance of Sysmex DI-60 in abnormal samples, and most focused on leukopenic samples. We evaluate the efficacy of DI-60 in determining white blood cell (WBC) differentials in normal and abnormal samples in different WBC count. Peripheral blood smears (n = 166) were categorised into normal control and disease groups, and further divided into moderate and severe leucocytosis, mild leucocytosis, normal, mild leukopenia, and moderate and severe leukopenia groups based on WBC count. DI-60 preclassification and verification and manual counting results were assessed using Bland–Altman and Passing–Bablok regression analyses. The Kappa test compared the concordance in the abnormal cell detection between DI-60 and manual counting. DI-60 exhibited notable overall sensitivity and specificity for all cells, except basophils. The correlation between the DI-60 preclassification and manual counting was high for segmented neutrophils, band neutrophils, lymphocytes, and blasts, and improved for all cell classes after verification. Abstract Bitter gourd has numerous health-promoting effects on the human body. However, its use has been greatly limited due to its poor acceptance by consumers, resulting from its strong bitterness. This study investigated the effects of five wall materials, namely, soybean protein isolate, gum arabic, maltodextrin, resistant starch, and a soybean lecithin calcium caseinate mixture, on the physicochemical properties of spray-dried bitter gourd powders. The results showed that all five wall materials reduced the moisture content, water activity, browning degree, agglomeration, and bitterness of the spray-dried bitter gourd powder. Maltodextrin was found to be the most effective at reducing water activity, while soybean protein isolate was best at protecting the colour, and the soybean lecithin calcium caseinate mixture was best at reducing hygroscopicity and masking bitterness. Additionally, all five wall materials improved the preservation of flavonoids, saponins, and vitamin C, with soybean protein isolate being the most effective in improving the total flavonoid retention ratio and the soybean lecithin calcium caseinate mixture being the best in improving the retention ratios of total saponins and vitamin C. The spray-dried bitter gourd powder prepared with soybean protein isolate had the highest antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. These results are significant for understanding the relationship between wall materials and the physicochemical properties of spray-dried powder. Additionally, these materials provide bitter gourd product manufacturers with useful guidance for producing high-quality products. Furthermore, the results could provide useful insights for processing fruits with similar product characteristics, thus contributing to the enrichment of food processing knowledge.

Tendon injury is a common disorder of the musculoskeletal system, with a higher possibility of occurrence in elderly individuals and athletes. After a tendon injury, the tendon suffers from inadequate and slow healing, resulting in the formation of fibrotic scar tissue, ending up with inferior functional properties. Therapeutic strategies involving the application of growth factors have been advocated to promote tendon healing. Growth and differentiation-5 (GDF-5) represents one such factor that has shown promising effect on tendon healing in animal models and in vitro cultures. Although promising, these studies are limited as the molecular mechanisms by which GDF-5 exerts its effect remain incompletely understood. Starting from broadly introducing essential elements of current understanding about GDF-5, the present review aims to define the effect of GDF-5 and its possible mechanisms of action in tendon healing. Nevertheless, we still need more in vivo studies to explore dosage, application time and delivery strategy of GDF-5, so as to pave the way for future clinical translation.

Abstract Grid‐connected voltage source converters (VSCs) have been broadly applied in modern power system. However, instability issues may be triggered by the integration of grid‐connected VSCs, jeopardising the operation of the power grid. Conventional stability analysis methods can be utilised to derive system stability margins under nominal conditions. Whereas grid‐connected VSCs inevitably operate under multiparameter uncertainty, which may result in overly optimistic or even incorrect estimations of stability margins, thereby posing potential risks to system operation. To address this issue, an interval small‐signal stability analysis approach is proposed to investigate the system stability under multiparameter uncertainty. First, the interval state‐space model of the grid‐connected VSC system is constructed based on interval symbolic linearisation. Furthermore, the interval eigenvalue decomposition is introduced to calculate the interval eigenvalue distribution of the interval state‐space model. Eventually, the upper bounds of the real part of the dominant interval eigenvalues are utilised for deriving interval stable parameter regions. Results of Monte Carlo analysis and time‐domain simulations of the grid‐connected VSC system are utilised to verify the effectiveness of the proposed interval stability analysis method.

Abstract Background The skeletal muscle growth rate and body size of Tibetan pigs (TIB) are lower than Large white pigs (LW). However, the underlying genetic basis attributing to these differences remains uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, the present study employed whole-genome sequencing of TIB (slow growth) and LW (fast growth) individuals, and integrated with existing NCBI sequencing datasets of TIB and LW individuals, enabling the identification of a comprehensive set of genetic variations for each breed. The specific and predominant SNPs in the TIB and LW populations were detected by using a cutoff value of 0.50 for SNP allele frequency and absolute allele frequency differences (△AF) between the TIB and LW populations. Results A total of 21,767,938 SNPs were retrieved from 44 TIB and 29 LW genomes. The analysis detected 2,893,106 (13.29%) and 813,310 (3.74%) specific and predominant SNPs in the TIB and LW populations, and annotated to 24,560 genes. Further GO analysis revealed 291 genes involved in biological processes related to striated and/or skeletal muscle differentiation, proliferation, hypertrophy, regulation of striated muscle cell differentiation and proliferation, and myoblast differentiation and fusion. These 291 genes included crucial regulators of muscle cell determination, proliferation, differentiation, and hypertrophy, such as members of the Myogenic regulatory factors (MRF) (MYOD, MYF5, MYOG, MYF6) and Myocyte enhancer factor 2 (MEF2) (MEF2A, MEF2C, MEF2D) families, as well as muscle growth inhibitors (MSTN, ACVR1, and SMAD1); KEGG pathway analysis revealed 106 and 20 genes were found in muscle growth related positive and negative regulatory signaling pathways. Notably, genes critical for protein synthesis, such as MTOR, IGF1, IGF1R, IRS1, INSR, and RPS6KA6, were implicated in these pathways. Conclusion This study employed an effective methodology to rigorously identify the potential genes associated with skeletal muscle development. A substantial number of SNPs and genes that potentially play roles in the divergence observed in skeletal muscle growth between the TIB and LW breeds were identified. These findings offer valuable insights into the genetic underpinnings of skeletal muscle development and present opportunities for enhancing meat production through pig breeding.

Abstract Background/purpose(s) The gut microbiota and its metabolites play crucial roles in pathogenesis of arthritis, highlighting gut microbiota as a promising avenue for modulating autoimmunity. However, the characterization of the gut virome in arthritis patients, including osteoarthritis (OA) and gouty arthritis (GA), requires further investigation. Methods We employed virus-like particle (VLP)-based metagenomic sequencing to analyze gut viral community in 20 OA patients, 26 GA patients, and 31 healthy controls, encompassing a total of 77 fecal samples. Results Our analysis generated 6819 vOTUs, with a considerable proportion of viral genomes differing from existing catalogs. The gut virome in OA and GA patients differed significantly from healthy controls, showing variations in diversity and viral family abundances. We identified 157 OA-associated and 94 GA-associated vOTUs, achieving high accuracy in patient-control discrimination with random forest models. OA-associated viruses were predicted to infect pro-inflammatory bacteria or bacteria associated with immunoglobulin A production, while GA-associated viruses were linked to Bacteroidaceae or Lachnospiraceae phages. Furthermore, several viral functional orthologs displayed significant differences in frequency between OA-enriched and GA-enriched vOTUs, suggesting potential functional roles of these viruses. Additionally, we trained classification models based on gut viral signatures to effectively discriminate OA or GA patients from healthy controls, yielding AUC values up to 0.97, indicating the clinical utility of the gut virome in diagnosing OA or GA. Conclusion Our study highlights distinctive alterations in viral diversity and taxonomy within gut virome of OA and GA patients, offering insights into arthritis etiology and potential treatment and prevention strategies. Abstract The members of the classic B7 family regulate the immune microenvironment of several malignant tumors. However, the potential relationship between the B7 family and the breast cancer (BrCa) tumor immune microenvironment has remained elusive. In the present study, we provide a comprehensive explanation of the expression, clinical significance, mutation, and immune cell infiltration of B7 family molecules in BrCa. First, we recruited 10 patients with BrCa surgery from the Wuxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital and performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis to investigate the distribution of B7 family members in multiple immune cell subsets. We focused on B7-2, B7-H3, and B7-H5 molecules of the B7 family and constructed tumor microarrays by self-recruiting patients to perform multiple immunohistochemical (mIHC) analyses and study tumor expression of B7-2, B7-H3, B7-H5 and CD8+ immune cell infiltration. B7-H5 displayed a strong correlation with CD8+ immune cell infiltration. In summary, B7-H5 provides a new perspective for the identification of immunothermal subtypes of BrCa and could function as a switch to reverse BrCa from an “immunologically cold” state to an “immunologically hot” state. Objective: To obtain a comparative analysis of the unqualified situation in the national food safety supervision sampling from 2020 to 2022. Methods: The information of unqualified samples in the national food safety supervision sampling from 2020 to 2022 was summarized and analyzed, including the sampling quantity, proportion of sampling types, food category, unqualified items and their related indicators and products. Results: The total quantity of annual food safety supervision sampling continuously increased from 2020 to 2022. Among which, edible agricultural products and restaurant food reached over half of the overall proportion (52.31%). A total of 34 different types of food were sampled and analyzed. Results showed that the unqualified rates of 3 types of food increased annually. Especially, the unqualified rate of edible agricultural products gradually increased from 2.23% (2020) to 3.63% (2022), while the unqualified rate of restaurant food increased from 5.99% (2020) to 8.07% (2022). Among all the unqualified items, excessive pesticide and veterinary drug residues accounted for the highest proportion, and showed an increasing trend from 35.31% to 41.16% annually. The second highest proportion was attributed to microbial pollution, whose proportion decreased yearly. Conclusion: Over the past three years, the intensity of food safety sampling has been continuously increasing. Overall, the unqualified rate of various types of food remained constant or showed downward trends. However, there was a consistent increase in the unqualified rate of edible agricultural products and restaurant food. Excessive agricultural and veterinary drugs residues were still an urgent problem to be solved. Excessive pesticide residues were mainly found on the surface of cowpeas and leeks, such as cyromazine and procymidone. Additionally, veterinary drugs, particularly enrofloxacin were abused in various products. Microbial pollution was mainly found in grain, pastry and convenience food products, indicating the need for further supervision.
