In our research, we explored a natural substance called Oxymatrine, found in a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, to fight against a common bird flu virus known as H9N2. This virus not only affects birds but can also pose a threat to human health. We focused on how this natural compound can help in stopping the virus from spreading in cells that line the lungs of birds and potentially humans. Our findings show that Oxymatrine can both directly block the virus and boost the body’s immune response against it. This dual-action mechanism is particularly interesting because it indicates that Oxymatrine might be a useful tool in developing new ways to prevent and treat this type of bird flu. Understanding how Oxymatrine works against the H9N2 virus could lead to safer and more natural ways to combat viral infections in animals and humans, contributing to the health and well-being of society. The H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) is a persistent health threat because of its rapid mutation rate and the limited efficacy of vaccines, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapies. This study investigated the H9N2 AIV antiviral properties of Oxymatrine (OMT), a compound derived from traditional Chinese medicine, particularly focusing on its interaction with pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs). Employing an array of in vitro assays, including 50% tissue culture infectious dose, Cell Counting Kit-8, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blot, we systematically elucidated the multifaceted effects of OMT. OMT dose-dependently inhibited critical antiviral proteins (PKR and Mx1) and modulated the expression of type I interferons and key cytokines (IFN-α, IFN-β, IL-6, and TNF-α), thereby affecting TLR3 signaling and its downstream elements (NF-κB and IRF-3). OMT’s antiviral efficacy extended beyond TLR3-mediated responses, suggesting its potential as a versatile antiviral agent. This study not only contributes to the growing body of research on the use of natural compounds as antiviral agents but also underscores the importance of further investigating the broader application of OMT for combating viral infections.

In this study, we design a one-dimensional periodic ring multi-connected optical waveguide network to solve the problem of obtaining ultra-wide photonic band gaps that are too complex for the photonic band gap width to be tuned. Analysing the spatial structures and numerical relations of our network reveals a common characteristic that the photonic band gap width is independent of the number of nodes in a unit cell of the optical waveguide network. Based on this character, we explore the potential practicability of our network by comparing it with existing optical waveguide network schemes. Our network has the advantages of lower complexity for the spatial topology, better scalability of the spatial topology, and better structural invariance.

Four new species of the genus Andixius Emeljanov & Hayashi, 2007 are described and illustrated from China. These are A. flagellihamus Wang & Chen, sp. nov., A. gracilispinus Wang & Chen, sp. nov., A. productus Wang & Chen, sp. nov. and A. truncatus Wang & Chen, sp. nov. Photographs of the new species and an identification key to all Andixius species are provided.

Two new species of genus Kuvera Distant, 1906, Kuvera campylotropa Zhi & Chen, sp. nov. and K. elongata Zhi & Chen, sp. nov., and a new Chinese record, K. basarukini Emeljanov, 1998, are described and illustrated from China. The females of two other species of Kuvera, K. laticeps (Metcalf, 1936) and K. ussuriensis (Vilbaste, 1968), are described for the first time. An updated identification key to Chinese species of Kuvera is given.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common surgical complication. Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases risk of developing POCD after surgery. DM patients with POCD seriously threaten the quality of patients’ life, however, the intrinsic mechanism is unclear, and the effective treatment is deficiency. Previous studies have demonstrated neuronal loss and reduced neurogenesis in the hippocampus in mouse models of POCD. In this study, we constructed a mouse model of DM by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, and then induced postoperative cognitive dysfunction by transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion. We found that mouse models of DM-POCD exhibited the most serious cognitive impairment, as well as the most hippocampal neural stem cells (H-NSCs) loss and neurogenesis decline. Subsequently, we hypothesized that small extracellular vesicles secreted by induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iMSC-sEVs) might promote neurogenesis and restore cognitive function in patients with DM-POCD. iMSC-sEVs were administered via the tail vein beginning on day 2 after surgery, and then once every 3 days for 1 month thereafter. Our results showed that iMSC-sEVs treatment significantly recovered compromised proliferation and neuronal-differentiation capacity in H-NSCs, and reversed cognitive impairment in mouse models of DM-POCD. Furthermore, miRNA sequencing and qPCR showed miR-21-5p and miR-486-5p were the highest expression in iMSC-sEVs. We found iMSC-sEVs mainly transferred miR-21-5p and miR-486-5p to promote H-NSCs proliferation and neurogenesis. As miR-21-5p was demonstrated to directly targete Epha4 and CDKN2C, while miR-486-5p can inhibit FoxO1 in NSCs. We then demonstrated iMSC-sEVs can transfer miR-21-5p and miR-486-5p to inhibit EphA4, CDKN2C, and FoxO1 expression in H-NSCs. Collectively, these results indicate significant H-NSC loss and neurogenesis reduction lead to DM-POCD, the application of iMSC-sEVs may represent a novel cell-free therapeutic tool for diabetic patients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Objective: When inspecting the appearance and quality of Litopenaeus Vannamei, the system can realize the automatic elimination of defective shrimps efficiently. Methods: Constructed an automatic shrimp elimination equipment and quality inspection. Structured an algorithm to extract shrimps' morphological feature, complete the clarification of normal and defective shrimps. Realizing defective shrimps' elimination by blowing them from the side to middle. Through the analysis of internal stress of shrimp, we calculated the correlation between blowing volume and moving distance. Moreover, the relationships among gass output volume, shrimps' moving distance and speed had been optimized. Results: With the increasing of experimental batches, the recognition rate increases gradually. When the experiment was carried out at the fourth time, the elimination rate can reach more than 95%. Conclusion: After the multi-channel device's parameters have been optimized, the system can achieve rapid elimination of defective shrimp online.

Abstract The history of stress in soil mass and pile surface roughness significantly impacts the time effect of residual pressure at the pile end and bearing characteristics of the jacked pile. In this study, the impacts of soil over-consolidation ratio and pile surface roughness on the time effect of residual pressure and bearing characteristics of jacked pile end in saturated silt foundation are explored. Through the independently developed model test device for the vertical bearing characteristics of jacked pile, the driving of jacked pile with different pile surface roughness and static load tests at different resting phases are carried out on saturated silt foundations with different over-consolidation ratios. The model box is cylindrical in shape with a size of 40 cm × 48 cm (inner diameter × height) and is made of transparent tempered glass. The results show that: the increase in surface roughness of jacked pile in saturated silt foundation causes not only the increase in the pile side friction but also the increase in the pile end resistance during the static pressure sinking pile; the change laws on the residual pressure of pile end and limit friction resistance of pile side for jacked pile in saturated silt foundation vary with over-consolidation ratio of soil mass and the pile surface roughness.

Abstract Background Qing Chang oral liquid (QOL) is a veterinary drug, which mainly composed of Artemisiae annuae herba, Dichroae radix, Agrimonia pilosa and Sanguisorbae radix. Objectives This study aims to explore the effect of Qing Chang Oral Liquid (QOL) on the treatment effect of artificially infected chicken coccidiosis and to the cellular immunity. Methods Healthy Roman chickens were randomly divided into five groups: blank group, model group, QOL high‐, medium‐ and low‐dose groups. All the groups were orally administered with 1 × 104 sporulated oocysts (except the blank group). After 5 days of oral administration, the high‐, medium‐ and low‐dose groups of QOL were added to the drinking water at 2.4, 1.8 and 1.2 ml/kg, respectively. The blank and model groups were fed normally, and this experiment lasted for 7 days. The clinical signs were observed, and the relative weight gain, survival rate, cecum lesion score and oocyst value were measured to evaluate the effect of QOL. Meanwhile, the peripheral blood T‐lymphocyte subsets and cecal IL‐2, IL‐17, IFN‐γ mRNA expression were detected by flow cytometry and fluorescent quantitative PCR. Results The chickens in the model group were in poor mental state, gathered together, had loose stools or bloody stools and had less food intake and less exercise. The chicken mental state improved, the food intake and drinking water increased, and the faeces are normal in the high‐, medium‐ and low‐dose groups, especially in the high‐dose group, the anti‐coccidial indexes were up to 173.08. No significant differences were observed (p > 0.05) in the peripheral blood CD3+, CD3+CD4+ between the experimental groups. Compared with the blank group, there were different degrees of increase in each dose drug group of the cecal IFN‐γ, IL‐2 and IL‐17 mRNA expression, but the high‐dose group was significantly reduced compared with the model group (p < 0.01), but there was no significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions This study suggests that QOL has positive anti‐coccidial effect but has no obvious effect on the cellular immunity.

The genus Parandes Muir, 1925 (Cixiinae, Andini) is recorded from China for the first time with two new species, Parandes circinatus Wang & Chen sp. nov. and Parandes fuscus Wang & Chen sp. nov. Color images for the adults of the two new species and line drawings for the genitalia are provided. A key is presented to separate all species within the genus.

Objective: To solve the problems of poor accuracy and low sorting efficiency of the existing string fruits in robot sorting. Methods: Based on the structure of the high-speed parallel food sorting system, the improved SURF algorithm and the improved RANSAC algorithm were combined to locate the grab points of the food sorting robot, and a three-dimensional grab model was established to realize the automatic and stable grab of string fruits. Taking grapes as an example, the superiority and accuracy of the proposed method were verified by experiments. Results: Compared with the conventional method, the proposed method improved the average capture success rate by about 15.00% and the average capture time by 0.101 s. Conclusion: The food sorting robot can effectively improve the accuracy of the positioning of the holding points of string fruits, and has a high success rate.

Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is highly expressed in a variety of cancer cells and suggests a poorer prognosis for patients. The natural compound isorhamnetin (ISO) shows promise in treating cancers and causing damage to canine mammary tumor (CMT) cells. We investigated the mechanism of ISO in reducing PD-L1 expression in CMT cells. Clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) was used to mediate CD274 knockout in U27 cells. Then, monoclonal cells were screened and cultured. Nucleotide sequencing and expression of PD-L1 were detected. Additionally, we examined cell migration, invasion, and damage. Immunofluorescent staining of PD-L1 was examined in U27 cells. The signaling pathways were measured by Western blotting. Murine xenotransplantation models and murine immunocompetent allograft mammary tumor models were established to evaluate the effect of ISO therapy. Expression of Ki-67, caspase3, and PD-L1 were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. A pull-down assay was used to explore which proteins could bind to ISO. Canine EGFR protein was purified and used to detect whether it directly binds to ISO using a surface plasmon resonance assay. ISO inhibited the EGFR-STAT3-PD-L1 signaling pathway and blocked cancer growth, significantly increasing the survival rate of healthy cells. The cell membrane receptor EGFR was identified as a direct target of ISO. ISO could be exploited as an antineoplastic treatment of CMT by targeting EGFR to suppress PD-L1 expression.

The radiation mechanism (thermal photosphere or magnetic synchrotron) and the progenitor of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are under hot debate. Recently discovered, the prompt long-duration (∼10 s, normally from the collapse of massive stars) property of GRB 211211A strongly conflicts with its association with a kilonova (normally from the merger of two compact objects, NS–NS, NS–BH, or NS–WD, duration ≲2 s). In this paper, we find that the probability photosphere model with a structured jet can satisfactorily explain this peculiar long duration, through the duration stretching effect (∼3 times) on the intrinsic longer (∼3 s) duration of an NS–BH merger, the observed empirical 2SBPL spectrum (with soft low-energy index α of ∼−1), and its evolution. In addition, much evidence of the NS–BH merger origin is found, especially the good fit of the afterglow-subtracted optical−near-IR light curves by the significant thermal cocoon emission and the sole thermal “red” kilonova component. Finally, a convincing new explanation for the X-ray afterglow plateau is revealed.

The analysis of gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra often relies on empirical models lacking a distinct physical explanation. Previous attempts to couple physical models with observed data focus on individual burst studies, fitting models to segmented spectra with independent physical parameters. However, these approaches typically neglect to explain the time evolution of observed spectra. In this study, we propose a novel approach by incorporating the synchrotron radiation model to provide a self-consistent explanation for a selection of single-pulse GRBs. Our study comprehensively tests the synchrotron model under a unified physical condition, such as a single injection event of electrons. By tracing the evolution of cooling electrons in a decaying magnetic field, our model predicts time-dependent observed spectra that align well with the data. Using a single set of physical parameters, our model successfully fits all time-resolved spectra within each burst. Our model suggests that the rising phase of the GRB light curve results from the increasing number of radiating electrons, while the declining phase is attributed to the curvature effect, electron cooling, and the decaying magnetic field. Our model provides a straightforward interpretation of the peak energy’s evolution, linked to the decline of the magnetic field and electron cooling due to the expansion of the GRB emission region. Our findings strongly support the notion that spectral and temporal evolution in GRB pulses originates from the expansion of the GRB emission region, with an initial radius of approximately 10 ^15 cm, and synchrotron radiation as the underlying emission mechanism.
