Abstract

Relativistic millicharged particles ($\chi_q$) have been proposed in various extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the scenarios where they are produced at nuclear reactor core and via interactions of cosmic-rays with the earth's atmosphere. Millicharged particles could also be candidates for dark matter, and become relativistic through acceleration by supernova explosion shock waves. The atomic ionization cross section of $\chi_q$ with matter are derived with the equivalent photon approximation. Smoking-gun signatures with significant enhancement in the differential cross section are identified. New limits on the mass and charge of $\chi_q$ are derived, using data taken with a point-contact germanium detector with 500g mass functioning at an energy threshold of 300~eV at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

AIMS: Statin-related myopathy (SRM), which includes rhabdomyolysis, is an uncommon but important adverse drug reaction because the number of people prescribed statins world-wide is large. Previous association studies of common genetic variants have had limited success in identifying a genetic basis for this adverse drug reaction. We conducted a multi-site whole-exome sequencing study to investigate whether rare coding variants confer an increased risk of SRM. METHODS AND RESULTS: SRM 3-5 cases (N = 505) and statin treatment-tolerant controls (N = 2047) were recruited from multiple sites in North America and Europe. SRM 3-5 was defined as symptoms consistent with muscle injury and an elevated creatine phosphokinase level >4 times upper limit of normal without another likely cause of muscle injury. Whole-exome sequencing and variant calling was coordinated from two analysis centres, and results of single-variant and gene-based burden tests were meta-analysed. No genome-wide significant associations were identified. Given the large number of cases, we had 80% power to identify a variant with minor allele frequency of 0.01 that increases the risk of SRM 6-fold at genome-wide significance. CONCLUSIONS: In this large whole-exome sequencing study of severe statin-related muscle injury conducted to date, we did not find evidence that rare coding variants are responsible for this adverse drug reaction. Larger sample sizes would be required to identify rare variants with small effects, but it is unclear whether such findings would be clinically actionable.

Abstract

Ferric groundwater treatment residual (Fe-GWTR) collected from a Finnish groundwater treatment plant were recovered for use after acid dissolution as an iron source for an inorganic-organic hybrid material. Acid dissolution, performed with 1 mol/L hydrochloric acid and mixing for one hour at room temperature, was determined as the optimal condition based on a high Fe concentration and low concentration of interfering elements. Peat modification was conducted at pH values of 3, 5 and 7 with both a commercial iron reagent (FeCl3·6H2O) and Fe-GWTR solution for comparison. A modification pH of 3 resulted in the highest vanadium removal efficiency for both iron sources. The isoelectric point (pHIEP) of Fe-GWTR-modified peat at pH 3 (Fe-GWTR-P3) was found to be 5.0. After modification, it was confirmed that BET surface area and pore volume of the peat were enlarged. Maximum capacity was found to be around 16 mg/g with a 24-hour contact time at pH 4 and a good fit was achieved with the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model. The kinetic data followed the Elovich equation, which refers to the chemisorption mechanism. According to intra-particle diffusion and Boyd models, the adsorption was a two-step diffusion process, with intra-particle diffusion being the slowest step. This study demonstrates that Fe-GWTR could safely be used as an iron source for biomass modification, and Fe-GWTR-P3 could be used as a low-cost and effective sorbent for vanadium-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Forward osmosis (FO) has been used in the wastewater treatment due to its advantages including low energy consumption and low membrane fouling. In this study, real municipal wastewater was concentrated by FO process using seawater concentrate as draw solution (DS). The influences of operating conditions such as temperature, flow velocity and sewage pre-filtration on water flux were investigated. Chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus could not be enriched by 4 times while sewage was reduced to 1/4 volume. Excitation and emission matrix fluorescence spectrum showed that a fraction of dissolved organic compounds in sewage transported across membrane into DS. Membrane fouling was evaluated by scanning electronic microscope analysis that a dense cake layer was formed on the membrane surface after sewage filtration. However, water flux of the fouled membrane was highly recovered after 1 h of physical cleaning.

Abstract

In this study, trisodium citrate was used as draw solute in forward osmosis (FO) due to its biodegradability and easy reuse after FO dilution. The effect of operating conditions on FO performance was investigated. The study focused on the long-term flux performance and membrane fouling when surface water was used as feed solution. A water flux of 9.8 LMH was observed using 0.5 M trisodium citrate as draw solution in PRO mode. In the long-term FO process, trisodium citrate showed a slight decrease in total flux loss (13.06%) after 20 h of operation. The membrane fouling was significantly reduced after a two-step physical cleaning. A considerable flux recovery (> 95%) of the fouled membrane was finally obtained. Therefore, this study proves the superiority of trisodium citrate as draw solution and paves a new way in applying FO directly for surface water reclamation.

Abstract

A global, unified dataset on Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) changes under perennial crops has not existed till now. We present a global, harmonised database on SOC change resulting from perennial crop cultivation. It contains information about 1605 paired-comparison empirical values (some of which are aggregated data) from 180 different peer-reviewed studies, 709 sites, on 58 different perennial crop types, from 32 countries in temperate, tropical and boreal areas; including species used for food, bioenergy and bio-products. The database also contains information on climate, soil characteristics, management and topography. This is the first such global compilation and will act as a baseline for SOC changes in perennial crops. It will be key to supporting global modelling of land use and carbon cycle feedbacks, and supporting agricultural policy development.

Abstract

Prunus persica (Pfirsich) ist ein Harz, das aus der Rinde von Rosengewächsen oder Bergpfirsichen abgesondert wird. Es ist ein rosa oder hellgelber bis gelblich-brauner durchscheinender Feststoff. Die Hauptbestandteile von Prunus persica (Pfirsich) sind Polysaccharide und Proteine. Prunus persica (Pfirsich) Polysaccharide bestehen hauptsächlich aus Galaktose und aus Arabinose. Es enthält auch eine kleine Menge an Mannose, Rhamnose und Glukose, die eine Schönheits- und Anti-Aging-Wirkung haben. Für die klinische Bewertung der sofortigen Faltenentfernungsfunktion von Immedeline PG wurden Probanden unterschiedlichen Alters und geeigneter Gesundheit ausgewählt. Es wurde festgestellt, dass sowohl 5 % als auch 10 % Immedeline PG die Festigkeit der Fingerhaut signifikant verbessern können. Zudem wurde festgestellt, dass 10 % Immedeline PG die Hautelastizität deutlich verbessern können. Der Verbesserungseffekt ist nach 2 Stunden am deutlichsten und kann 8 Stunden lang aufrechterhalten werden. Nach 5 minus Auftragen wurden die Augenwinkelfalten deutlich verbessert. Abstract

Prunus persica (peach) is a resin secreted from the bark of rosaceae peaches or mountain peaches. It is a pink or light yellow to yellowish brown translucent solid. The main components of prunus persica (peach) are polysaccharides and proteins. Prunus persica (peach) polysaccharides are mainly composed of galactose and it is composed of arabinose. And also contains a small amount of mannose, rhamnose and glucose which has the effects of beauty and anti-aging. Subjects of different ages and suitable health were selected for clinical evaluation of the instant wrinkle-removing function of Immedeline PG. It is found that both 5% and 10% Immedeline PG can significantly improve the firmness of finger skin. It was found that 10% Immedeline PG can significantly improve the skin elasticity. The improvement effect is most obvious at 2 hrs and can be maintained for 8 hrs. After 5 minus of applying, the eye corner wrinkles were significantly improved. Abstract

We report the first results of a light weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search from the CDEX-10 experiment with a 10 kg germanium detector array immersed in liquid nitrogen at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a physics data size of 102.8 kg day. At an analysis threshold of 160 eVee, improved limits of 8 x 10(-42) and 3 x 10(-36) cm(2) at a 90% confidence level on spin-independent and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections, respectively, at a WIMP mass (m(chi)) of 5 GeV/c(2) are achieved. The lower reach of m(chi) is extended to 2 GeV/c(2).

Abstract

Abstract Background Recent reports indicate that microRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in malignancies. However, the role that miRNAs play in pancreatic cancer remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate aberrantly expressed miRNAs in pancreatic cancer tissues and demonstrate their roles in disease progression. Results We detected the expression patterns of miRNAs in 10 pancreatic cancer tissues and their adjacent benign tissues by quantitative real time-PCR (qRT-PCR) and found that miR-15a and miR-214 were dysregulated in the tumor samples. This is the first time that miR-214 has been identified as aberrantly expressed in pancreatic cancer. In vitro experiments showed that overexpression of miR-15a inhibited the viability of pancreatic cancer cells, whereas overexpression of miR-214 decreased the sensitivity of the cells to gemcitabine (GEM). Furthermore, we identified WNT3A and FGF7 as potential targets of miR-15a and ING4 as a target of miR-214. Conclusions Aberrant expression of miRNAs such as miR-15a and miR-214 results in different cellular effects in pancreatic cancer. Downregulation of miR-15a might contribute to proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells, whereas upregulation of miR-214 in pancreatic cancer specimens might be related to the poor response of pancreatic cancer cells to chemotherapy. MiR-15a directly targets multiple genes relevant in pancreatic cancer, suggesting that it may serve as a novel therapeutic target for treatment of the disease.

191. Dietary calcium attenuates platelet aggregation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Abstract

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are known to be blood pressure sensitive to dietary calcium. The effects of dietary calcium on platelet aggregation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization were assessed by turbidimetric methods and fura-2 methods, respectively, in washed platelets of SHR. Ca2+ ATPase activity was examined in aortic membrane fractions. Six weeks of dietary calcium supplementation attenuated the increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP 199 +/- 16 v 170 +/- 9 mm Hg, P < .001) and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation (84.5 +/- 3.7 v 73.7 +/- 7.4%, P < .004) at 9 weeks of age. The ionomycin-induced intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) peak in the absence of external Ca2+, which reflects [Ca2+]i storage size, and thrombin-evoked [Ca2+]i release from [Ca2+]i storage were decreased by 2.0% Ca diet (472 +/- 55 v 370 +/- 23 nmol/L, P < .001, 339 +/- 29 v 278 +/- 33 nmol/L, P < .002). In addition, SBP was positively correlated with platelet aggregation (r = 0.703, P = .0088), thrombin-evoked [Ca2+]i (r = 0.739, P = .0044), and ionomycin-induced [Ca2+]i (r = 0.591, P = .0415), respectively. However, there was no significant effect of dietary calcium on Ca2+-ATPase activity in aortic membranes. These results suggest that dietary calcium supplementation had a beneficial effect on platelets of SHR by attenuating [Ca2+]i mobilization from [Ca2+]i storage. The hypotensive effect of dietary calcium might be associated with attenuated [Ca2+]i mobilization in SHR.

Draft genomes of the species Annulohypoxylon stygium, Aspergillus mulundensis, Berkeleyomyces basicola (syn. Thielaviopsis basicola), Ceratocystis smalleyi, two Cercospora beticola strains, Coleophoma cylindrospora, Fusarium fracticaudum, Phialophora cf. hyalina and Morchella septimelata are presented. Both mating types (MAT1-1 and MAT1-2) of Cercospora beticola are included. Two strains of Coleophoma cylindrospora that produce sulfated homotyrosine echinocandin variants, FR209602, FR220897 and FR220899 are presented. The sequencing of Aspergillus mulundensis, Coleophoma cylindrospora and Phialophora cf. hyalina has enabled mapping of the gene clusters encoding the chemical diversity from the echinocandin pathways, providing data that reveals the complexity of secondary metabolism in these different species. Overall these genomes provide a valuable resource for understanding the molecular processes underlying pathogenicity (in some cases), biology and toxin production of these economically important fungi.

© 2018 Desalination Publications. All rights reserved. This study evaluated the feasibility of using the secondary effluent as makeup water for cooling water. The secondary effluent and the simulated cooling water were used as feed solution (FS) and draw solution (DS) in FO process. Ammonium bicarbonate was added into the simulated cooling water to promote the osmotic pressure. The tests were studied under different membrane orientations, temperatures and flow rates using both TFC-FO and CTA-FO membranes, and determined in terms of water flux, the permeate recovery and membrane fouling. The considerable permeate recovery (18.9% at 20 h) and reversible membrane fouling indicated that the feasibility of using FO for cooling water reuse. CTA- and TFC-PRO modes had higher initial water flux, but more significant flux decline compared to CTA- and TFC-FO modes. The optimal conditions were determined to be 25°C and 17.0 cm/s in which the water flux was highest. The results showed that water flux did not increase with the temperature when it was above than 30°C. The same situation occurred at the cross flow velocity above than 17 cm/s. The fouling of TFC membrane was serious after running 20 h, but it could be cleaned well by 1 h simple surface flushing and the water flux could restore nearly 93.8%.

Abstract

A study on cosmogenic activation in germanium was carried out to evaluate the cosmogenic background level of natural and $^{70}$Ge depleted germanium detectors. The production rates of long-lived radionuclides were calculated with Geant4 and CRY. Results were validated by comparing the simulated and experimental spectra of CDEX-1B detector. Based on the validated codes, the cosmogenic background level was predicted for further tonne-scale CDEX experiment. The suppression of cosmogenic background level could be achieved by underground germanium crystal growth and high-purity germanium detector fabrication to reach the sensitivity requirement for direct detection of dark matter. Abstract

Relativistic millicharged particles ($\chi_q$) have been proposed in various extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the scenarios where they are produced at nuclear reactor core and via interactions of cosmic-rays with the earth's atmosphere. Millicharged particles could also be candidates for dark matter, and become relativistic through acceleration by supernova explosion shock waves. The atomic ionization cross section of $\chi_q$ with matter are derived with the equivalent photon approximation. Smoking-gun signatures with significant enhancement in the differential cross section are identified. New limits on the mass and charge of $\chi_q$ are derived, using data taken with a point-contact germanium detector with 500g mass functioning at an energy threshold of 300~eV at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The CDEX-10 experiment searches for light weakly-interacting massive particles, a form of dark matter, at the China JinPing underground laboratory, where approximately 10 kg of germanium detectors are arranged in an array and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Herein, we report on the experimental apparatus, detector characterization, and spectrum analysis of one prototype detector. Owing to the higher rise-time resolution of the CDEX-10 prototype detector as compared with CDEX-1B, we identified the origin of an observed category of extremely fast events. For data analysis of the CDEX-10 prototype, we introduced and applied an improved bulk/surface event discrimination method. The results of the new method were compared to those of the CDEX-1B spectrum. Both sets of results showed good consistency in the 0--12 keVee energy range, except for the 8.0 keV K-shell X-ray peak from the external copper., Comment: version accepted by SCPMA, 8 pages, 11 figures and 2 tables

Abstract

The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0${\nu}{\beta}{\beta}$) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neutrinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of $\sim$0.1 count /(FWHM$\cdot$t$\cdot$yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation $^{76}$Ge experiments GERDA and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0${\nu}{\beta}{\beta}$ signal region of all 0${\nu}{\beta}{\beta}$ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale $^{76}$Ge experiment. 200. An unusual long-lived relativistic electron enhancement event excited by sequential CMEs

Abstract

An unusual long-lived intense relativistic electron enhancement event from July to August 2004 is examined using data from Fengyun-1, POES, GOES, ACE, the Cluster Mission, and geomagnetic indices. During the initial 6days of this event, the observed fluxes in the outer zone enhanced continuously, and their maximum increased from 2.1x10(2)cm(-2)sr(-1)s(-1) to 3.5x10(4)cm(-2)sr(-1)s(-1), the region of enhanced fluxes extended from L=3.5-6.5 to L=2.5-6.5, and the flux peak location shifted inward from L4.2 to L3.3. During the following 7days, without any locational movement, the flux peak increased slowly and exceeded the prestorm fluxes by about 4 orders of magnitude. Subsequently, the decay rate of relativistic electrons is so slow that the peak remains over 10(4)cm(-2)sr(-1)s(-1) for about 30days. The drift resonance between ULF waves, which arose from high-speed solar wind and frequent impulses of solar wind dynamic pressure, and energetic electrons injected by substorms could be an important acceleration mechanism in this event. The local acceleration by whistler mode chorus could be another mechanism contributing to this enhancement. The plasmaspheric response to the interplanetary disturbances reveals that the enhanced outer zone is divided into two portions by the plasmapause. Accordingly, the slow loss rate in the plasmasphere due to hiss primarily contributed to the long-lived characteristic of this event. This event reveals that the outer zone population behaviors are dominated by the interplanetary variations together with the responses of geomagnetic field and plasmasphere to these variations.
