Drought has gradually become one of the most severe abiotic stresses on plants. Plants that experience stress training can exhibit enhanced stress tolerance. According to MicroRNA (miRNA) sequencing data, this study identified 195 candidate drought memory-related miRNAs in wheat, and targets of 64 (32.8%) candidate miRNAs were validated by degradome sequencing. Several drought memory-related miRNAs such as tae-miR9676-5p, tae-MIR9676-p3_1ss21GA, tae-miR171a, tae-miR531_L-2, tae-miR408_L-1, PC-3p-5049_3565, tae-miR396c-5p, tae-miR9778, tae-miR164a-5p, and tae-miR9662a-3p were validated as having a strong response to drought memory by regulating the expression of their target genes. In addition, overexpression of drought memory-related miRNA, tae-miR531_L-2, can remarkably improve the drought tolerance of transgenic Arabidopsisthaliana. Drought memory can regulate plant cellular signal transduction, plant biosynthetic processes, and other biological processes to cope with drought via transcriptional memory. In addition, drought memory-related miRNAs can promote starch and sucrose catabolism and soluble sugar accumulation and regulate proline homeostasis to improve plant drought resistance. Our results could contribute to an understanding of drought memory in wheat seedlings and may provide a new strategy for drought-resistant breeding.

Autophagy is an indispensable biological process and plays crucial roles in plant growth and plant responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. This study systematically identified autophagy-related proteins (ATGs) in wheat and its diploid and tetraploid progenitors and investigated their genomic organization, structure characteristics, expression patterns, genetic variation, and regulation network. We identified a total of 77, 51, 29, and 30 ATGs in wheat, wild emmer, T. urartu and A. tauschii, respectively, and grouped them into 19 subfamilies. We found that these autophagy-related genes (ATGs) suffered various degrees of selection during the wheat’s domestication and breeding processes. The genetic variations in the promoter region of Ta2A_ATG8a were associated with differences in seed size, which might be artificially selected for during the domestication process of tetraploid wheat. Overexpression of TaVAMP727 improved the cold, drought, and salt stresses resistance of the transgenic Arabidopsis and wheat. It also promoted wheat heading by regulating the expression of most ATGs. Our findings demonstrate how ATGs regulate wheat plant development and improve abiotic stress resistance. The results presented here provide the basis for wheat breeding programs for selecting varieties of higher yield which are capable of growing in colder, drier, and saltier areas.

The data presented here are related to the research article entitled “Differential expression of the angiotensin-(1-12) [Ang-(1-12)]/chymase axis in human atrial tissue [1]. We have showed that chymase gene transcripts, chymase activity, and immunoreactive- Ang-(1-12) expression levels were higher in left compared to right atrial tissue, irrespective of cardiac disease. This article presents the echocardiographic characteristics of 111 patients undergoing heart surgery for the correction of valvular heart disease, resistant atrial fibrillation or ischemic heart disease. Left atrial chymase mRNA expression and activity, and left atrial Ang-(1-12) levels were compared between patients with stroke vs. non-stroke, congestive heart failure vs. non-heart failure, and in cardiac surgery patients who had a history of postoperative atrial fibrillation vs. non-atrial fibrillation.

The G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) is a novel membrane-bound receptor that mediates non-genomic actions of the primary female sex hormone 17β-estradiol. Studies over the past two decades have elucidated the beneficial actions of this receptor in a number of cardiometabolic diseases. This review will focus specifically on the cardiac actions of GPER, since this receptor is expressed in cardiomyocytes as well as other cells within the heart and most likely contributes to estrogen-induced cardioprotection. Studies outlining the impact of GPER on diastolic function, mitochondrial function, left ventricular stiffness, calcium dynamics, cardiac inflammation, and aortic distensibility are discussed. In addition, recent data using genetic mouse models with global or cardiomyocyte-specific GPER gene deletion are highlighted. Since estrogen loss due to menopause in combination with chronological aging contributes to unique aspects of cardiac dysfunction in women, this receptor may provide novel therapeutic effects. While clinical studies are still required to fully understand the potential for pharmacological targeting of this receptor in postmenopausal women, this review will summarize the evidence gathered thus far on its likely beneficial effects.

In this paper, we reported a ZnO quantum dot (QD) based nano drug delivery system by surface modification of hydrophilic copolymer poly(methacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide-co-polyethylene glycol methyl acrylate) (ZnO@PMNE) that was synthesized by the one step copolymerization method. The ZnO@PMNE nanoparticles (ZnO@PMNE NPs) have excellent stability and photoluminescence performance in water. Moreover, it is temperature responsive and biodegradable in an acid microenvironment. ZnO@PMNE NPs loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) will degrade to zinc ions (Zn2+) and DOX at an acidic tumor microenvironment. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of cancer cells was significantly increased because the ZnO QDs exhibited cytotoxicity postdissolution compared to normal cells, which will achieve a synergistic antitumor effect to improve the therapeutic index.

Abstract Nutriology relies on advanced analytical tools to study the molecular compositions of food and provide key information on sample quality/safety. Small nutrients detection is challenging due to the high diversity and broad dynamic range of molecules in food samples, and a further issue is to track low abundance toxins. Herein, we developed a novel plasmonic matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) approach to detect small nutrients and toxins in complex biological emulsion samples. Silver nanoshells (SiO2@Ag) with optimized structures were used as matrices and achieved direct analysis of ~ 6 nL of human breast milk without any enrichment or separation. We performed identification and quantitation of small nutrients and toxins with limit-of-detection down to 0.4 pmol (for melamine) and reaction time shortened to minutes, which is superior to the conventional biochemical method currently in use. The developed approach contributes to the near-future application of MALDI MS in a broad field and personalized design of plasmonic materials for real-case bio-analysis.

The mechanical properties of thermoplastic olefin (TPO) composites with rubber content ranged from 17 to 23 wt% and talc content ranged from 19.5 to 25.5 wt% have been investigated at different strain rates and temperatures. Tensile tests were conducted at temperature of -30, 23, and 80°C, respectively, and strain rate from 10-3 to 10-1/s, respectively. The results showed that that the mechanical properties were modified significantly with the addition of rubber and talc, strain rate and temperature. The necking process of the TPO was rate dependent. At low strain rate, the deformation was close to the isothermal drawing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The automotive product design and manufacturing community is continually besieged by Herculean engineering, timing, and cost challenges. Nowhere is this more evident than in the development of designs and manufacturing processes for cast aluminum engine blocks and cylinder heads. Increasing engine performance requirements coupled with stringent weight and packaging constraints are pushing aluminum alloys to the limits of their capabilities. To provide high-quality blocks and heads at the lowest possible cost, manufacturing process engineers are required to find increasingly innovative ways to cast and heat treat components. Additionally, to remain competitive, products and manufacturing methods must be developed and implemented in record time. To bridge the gaps between program needs and engineering reality, the use of robust computational models in up-front analysis will take on an increasingly important role. This article describes just such a computational approach, the Virtual Aluminum Castings methodology, which was developed and implemented at Ford Motor Company and demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of integrated computational materials engineering. We previously showed that cardiomyocyte-specific G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) gene deletion leads to sex-specific adverse effects on cardiac structure and function; alterations which may be due to distinct differences in mitochondrial and inflammatory processes between sexes. Here, we provide the results of Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) based on the DNA microarray data from GPER-knockout versus GPER-intact (intact) cardiomyocytes. This article contains complete data on the mitochondrial and inflammatory response-related gene expression changes that were significant in GPER knockout versus intact cardiomyocytes from adult male and female mice. The data are supplemental to our original research article “Cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) leads to left ventricular dysfunction and adverse remodeling: a sex-specific gene profiling” (Wang et al., 2016) [1].
