In this paper, compressive material tests on unconfined/confined resin and steel reinforced resin were experimentally evaluated in order to validate the numerical results. The uniaxial model which combines damage mechanics and Ramberg-Osgood relationship is proposed in this paper to describe the uniaxial compressive behaviour of resin and steel reinforced resin. Numerical homogenization is conducted to predict the tensile and shear behaviour of steel reinforced resin after validated by compressive material test results. The friction angle β the ratio of the yield stress in triaxial tension to the yield stress in triaxial compression K, and the dilation angle ψ of the linear drucker-prager plastic model are obtained based on experiments and numerical homogenization simulation. The confinement effects on resin and steel reinforced resin could be effectively simulated by combing above parameters and uniaxial compressive model. Finite element simulations on unconfined/ confined resin and steel reinforced resin material tests were conducted to validate the material parameters proposed in this paper. This paper illustrates the most recent developments in the field of injected bolted connections. A novel injection material, steel-reinforced resin, is used to enhance stiffness of resin-injected bolted shear connections. The main goal is to achieve the slip resistance connection in a clearance holes without pre-tensioning of bolts. Steel-reinforced resins consist of spherical steel particles embedded in an epoxy resin matrix. Steel-reinforced resins are characterized by a higher Young’s Modulus compared to the bare epoxy resin. Numerical and analytical prediction methods for the quasi-static mechanical behaviour of steel-reinforced resins are presented and validated based on small-scale compression tests. The design of a tailor-made test setup, the simple pin connection, is presented. This setup allows for investigation of a generic behaviour of steel-reinforced resins subject to cyclic loading in confined conditions. Preliminary results obtained with the simple pin connection specimens are shown and improvements of the setup, specimens and process are discussed. In this paper, analytical and numerical homogenization methods are proposed to effectively simulate the macroscopic characteristics of a pultruded composite lamina. A continuum damage model was implemented via user material subroutine to model fiber failure, while the Mohr-Coulomb plastic criterion is employed to model matrix damage. In order to simulate the damage of the fiber-matrix interface, the relationship between traction and displacement is established. The proposed theoretical and numerical models were verified by tensile, compressive, and shear test results. Orthotropic Steel Decks (OSDs) are widely used in various types of steel bridges due to its benefits of light weight, high load bearing capacity and speedy construction. However, fatigue remains as the predominant problem for OSDs. Many researchers have investigated fatigue issues of welded joints through experiments but is not a cost-effective solution. Therefore, it is necessary to combine experimental data with numerical approaches. Fracture mechanics approach has already shown its reliability and can be used to model and analyze fatigue crack propagation. In this paper, a numerical simulation is performed to predict the fatigue crack propagation using extended finite element method (XFEM). Two numerical models were considered namely CT-specimen and OSD, to evaluate the modelling efficiency. To verify the simulation, the results were compared with the experimental data. In predicting the fatigue crack propagation rate using two-dimensional CT-specimen, numerical results provided a good agreement with a maximum difference of 0.03% in the slope (m) and 1.48% in the intercept (C) of the power law equation. Steel-concrete composite high bridge pier has been applied increasingly in China and around the world. Most applied steel type in the composite piers are H-shaped steel and steel pipe, while seldom research or practice is associated with angle steel. This paper conducted parametric study on the composite column with equal-leg angle steel and aimed to investigate the ultimate load and displacement ductility of the composite columns with different parameters. The parameters include the type of shear connector (stud and perfobond connectors), the type of structural steel (H-shaped steel and angle steel), steel-plate hooping ratio, shear-span ratio, and axial compression ratio. Finite element analysis was conducted for each specimen, which incorporated the concrete confinement effect, as well as the inelastic behavior of concrete, structural steel, and longitudinal and transverse steel bars. The equal-leg angle steel composite column was found to have slightly higher strength and displacement ductility than H-shaped steel composite column. The increase of steel-plate hooping result in larger strength and displacement ductility for the composite column, and the increase of shear-span ratio and axial compression ratio decrease the displacement ductility. Research results suggest stud and perfobond shear connectors should be applied as axial compression ratio being larger than 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. Basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) has been widely utilized in various constructions such as buildings, large industrial floors, and highways, due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties, as well as low production cost. In order to address the influence of basic parameters such as fiber volume fraction (0.05∼0.40%), fiber length (12∼36 mm) of BF, and compressive strength (30, 40, and 50 MPa) of concrete on both physical and mechanical properties of BFRC including compressive strength, tensile and flexural strength, workability, and anti-dry-shrinkage cracking properties, a series of standard material tests were conducted. Experimental results indicated that clumping of fibers may occur at relatively higher fiber volume fraction resulting in mixing and casting problems. Based on experimental values of mechanical properties and anti-dry-shrinkage cracking resistance of BFRC, the reasonable basalt fiber length and fiber volume fractions are identified. The addition of a small amount of short basalt fibers can result in a considerable increase in both compressive strength and modulus of rupture (MoR) of BFRC and that the proposed fiber length and content are 12.0 mm and 0.10%∼0.15%, respectively. As the length of basalt fibers increases, the development of early shrinkage cracks decreases initially and then increases slowly and the optimal fiber length is 18.0 mm. Results of the study also indicated that early shrinkage cracks decrease with the increase of fiber volume fraction, and when the volume fraction of 0.20% is used, no cracks were observed. In order to evaluate the shear performance of sand-coated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) perforated connectors (SCGPC) embedded in concrete, 8 pull-out tests were conducted. Finite element (FE) analysis considering GFRP failure and cohesion between GFRP and concrete of SCGPC were conducted for parametric analysis. Effects of surface treatment, hole's radius, embedment length, and multi holes were examined. The test and theoretical analysis revealed that the strength of SCGPC is considerably larger than GFRP Perforated Connector (GPC). The stiffness of SCGPC is determined by the adhesion between concrete and GFRP. When GFRP plate's thickness is less than the critical thickness, the embedment length plays a major role in the strength of SCGPC. When embedment length is less than the effective bond length, the shear strength of SCGPC is governed by both the adhesion and GPC's shear capacity; otherwise, the strength of SCGPC is governed by the adhesion strength. Furthermore, an empirical equation was suggested to predict the shear strength of SCGPC. The equation involves the failure mechanism of both bond and GPC and deals the strength of SCGPC into two ranges according to the embedment length. The assessment of fatigue crack initiation behavior of steel structures is essential and important especially to improve the application of high strength steel in construction. For a complete understanding of fatigue endurance, it is necessary to combine the phenomenological damage model with finite element numerical approach. In this paper, phantom nodes-based extended finite element method is used to predict the fatigue crack initiation of steel material, considering a prediction by XFEM of coupon tests made of steel grades S355 and S690. A user-defined fatigue damage initiation subroutine based on Smith, Watson, and Topper (SWT) damage model combined with non-linear isotropic/kinematic cyclic hardening model is implemented to predict fatigue crack initiation. In this study, flexural behaviors of the pultruded composite laminate were evaluated through experiments and theoretical analysis. Three-point flexural tests were performed for pultruded specimens. The typical failure mode for the longitudinal flexural specimens was local crush on the top surface accompanied with local cracks on the bottom surface at midspan. For the transverse tests, the specimens presented a failure pattern with local cracks initiated and propagated at both the top and bottom sides at the midspan. Theoretical analysis, based on micromechanics and macromechanics, was performed to predict flexural deformation and stress distribution of the pultruded laminate beam. Based on the continuum damage model proposed by the authors, this paper mainly investigates the flexural behavior and failure pattern of pultruded lamination. The theoretical and finite element results agreed well with the test results. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a novel class of gene regulators playing multifaceted roles in physiological processes as well as pathological conditions such as cancer. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small subset of tumor cells that constitute the origin and development of various malignant tumors. CSCs have been identified in a wide spectrum of human tumors and could act as a critical link underlying the processes of tumor metastasis and recurrence. Mounting evidence indicates that lncRNAs are aberrantly expressed in diverse CSCs and regulate CSC properties at different molecular levels. Here, we very briefly summarize the recent findings on the potential roles of lncRNAs in regulating various functions of CSCs, and elaborate on how can lncRNAs impact CSC properties via interacting with other macromolecules at the epigenetic, transcriptional, and post-transcriptional levels. This mini-review also highlights the understanding of the modular regulatory principles of lncRNA interactions in CSCs.

A versatile resistive temperature sensor for Internet-of-Things is presented, based on an all-dynamic architecture. This allows efficient scaling of power with conversion rate, enables optional oversampling for an adaptable resolution, and provides efficient adaptability to different resistor values. A new double-sided measurement mode is proposed to compensate for offset, 1/f noise and nonidealities at system level. The sensor achieves a minimum power consumption of 174 pW at 1 S/s measurement rate, which scales up to 488.3 nW at 100 kS/s. It offers a nominal rms resolution of 0.61 °C and a resolution FoM as low as 1.82 pJ °C2.

Injected bolted connections have been used in the Netherlands since the 1970s, initially to replace riveted connections of steel railway bridges. More recently, structural components with different geometrical tolerances have also been connected using injection bolts and oversize holes. The natural confinement of a bolted connection provides support to the injected epoxy resin so that it can withstand bearing stresses that are significantly higher than its uniaxial compressive strength. A recent innovation in the field of injected bolted connections is the development of steel-reinforced resin, which consists of a skeleton of steel particles and a conventional epoxy resin (polymer). In previous research, the steel-reinforced resin has shown to increase the connection stiffness and decrease creep deformation significantly. In this paper, a hybrid analytical-numerical homogenization method, which can consider the plasticity of steel and resin and the interfacial damage, is proposed to determine the stress-strain relationship of reinforced resins. The results of the hybrid homogenization method are validated against experimental data of small-scale specimen, subjected to compression in unconfined and confined conditions. Composite girder with corrugated steel web is one of the promising concrete-steel hybrid structures with superior properties and cost effectiveness widely applied in highway and railway bridges. The connection between concrete slabs and corrugated steel web is an important part of such composite structure. In order to improve pouring quality and durability of concrete for joint structure between corrugated steel webs and concrete lower slab, the validity of placing lower slab on the inner side of corrugated steel webs was confirmed and a new joint structure with perforated plate connectors was proposed. Push-out tests on proposed joint structure with different parameters including the welding width and the plate thickness were carried out to study their shear strength, shear stiffness, failure modes and relative slip characteristics. Subsequently, three-dimensional finite element models taking material non-linearity and nonlinear contact between steel and concrete interface into consideration were built and validated by the push-out tests. Afterwards, parametric studies were performed to further investigate the influences of geometrical parameters (such as width, height and thickness of perforated steel plate) and material parameters including steel yielding strength and concrete compressive strength on ultimate shear strength and failure mode of the joint structure. Analytical results indicate that the shear loading capacity is increased with the thickness, the width and height of perforated plate, and the compressive strength of concrete. However, steel yielding strength, presence or absence of perforating rebar, have a negligible effect on ultimate shear strength of the joint structure. Finally, prediction equations of shear capacity were provided and compared with experimental and numerical results.
