Abstract

Modern technologies not only provide a variety of communication modes, e.g., texting, cellphone conversation, and online instant messaging, but they also provide detailed electronic traces of these communications between individuals. These electronic traces indicate that the interactions occur in temporal bursts. Here, we study the inter-call durations of the 100,000 most-active cellphone users of a Chinese mobile phone operator. We confirm that the inter-call durations follow a power-law distribution with an exponential cutoff at the population level but find differences when focusing on individual users. We apply statistical tests at the individual level and find that the inter-call durations follow a power-law distribution for only 3460 individuals (3.46%). The inter-call durations for the majority (73.34%) follow a Weibull distribution. We quantify individual users using three measures: out-degree, percentage of outgoing calls, and communication diversity. We find that the cellphone users with a power-law duration distribution fall into three anomalous clusters: robot-based callers, telecom frauds, and telephone sales. This information is of interest to both academics and practitioners, mobile telecom operator in particular. In contrast, the individual users with a Weibull duration distribution form the fourth cluster of ordinary cellphone users. We also discover more information about the calling patterns of these four clusters, e.g., the probability that a user will call the $c_r$-th most contact and the probability distribution of burst sizes. 186. Bayesian inference of the crust–core transition density via the neutron-star radius and neutron-skin thickness data

Abstract

In this work, we perform a Bayesian inference of the crust–core transition density ρtof neutron stars based on the neutron-star radius and neutron-skin thickness data using a thermodynamical method. Uniform and Gaussian distributions for the ρtprior were adopted in the Bayesian approach. It has a larger probability of having values higher than 0.1 fm-3for ρtas the uniform prior and neutron-star radius data were used. This was found to be controlled by the curvature Ksymof the nuclear symmetry energy. This phenomenon did not occur if Ksymwas not extremely negative, namely, Ksym>− 200 MeV. The value of ρtobtained was 0.075-0.01+0.005fm-3at a confidence level of 68% when both the neutron-star radius and neutron-skin thickness data were considered. Strong anti-correlations were observed between ρt, slope L, and curvature of the nuclear symmetry energy. The dependence of the three L–Ksymcorrelations predicted in the literature on crust–core density and pressure was quantitatively investigated. The most probable value of 0.08 fm-3for ρtwas obtained from the L–Ksymrelationship proposed by Holt et al. while larger values were preferred for the other two relationships.

Abstract

With good electrical properties and an inherently complex crystal structure, Cu2−xSe is a potential “phonon glass electron crystal” thermoelectric material that has previously not attracted much interest. In this study, Cu2−xSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) compounds were synthesized by a melting-quenching method, and then sintered by spark plasma sintering to obtain bulk material. The effect of Cu content on the phase transition and thermoelectric properties of Cu2−xSe were investigated in the temperature range of 300 K–750 K. The results of X-ray diffraction at room temperature show that Cu2−xSe compounds possess a cubic structure with a space group of F m3m (#225) when 0.15 < x ≤ 0.25, whereas they adopt a composite of monoclinic and cubic phases when 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15. The thermoelectric property measurements show that with increasing Cu content, the electrical conductivity decreases, the Seebeck coefficient increases and the thermal conductivity decreases. Due to the relatively good power factor and low thermal conductivity, the nearly stoichiometric Cu2Se compound achieves the highest ZT of 0.38 at 750 K. It is expected that the thermoelectric performance can be further optimized by doping appropriate elements and/or via a nanostructuring approach.

Abstract

The single phase n-type (Bi 0.85 Sb 0.15 ) 2 (Te 1- x Se x ) 3 ( x =0.15, 0.17, 0.19, 0.21)compounds have been synthesized by melt-spinning combined with subsequent spark plasma sintering technique, and the microstructures and thermoelectric transport properties of the bulk materials have been systematically investigated. The results of field emitted scanning electron microscopy images show that the bulk materials possess refined crystalline and a large number of layered structures with the sizes from 10 nm to 100 nm, and their differences in composition and phase are detected neither from the back scattering image nor from element face distributing images of polishing surface. With the increase of content of selenium, the electrical conductivity and the thermal conductivity increase but the Seebeck coefficient decreases. Comparing with the traditional zone melted material, the samples with higher selenium content possesse higher thermoelectric optimum value ZT after 420 K and the highest ZT of the sample (Bi 0.85 Sb 0.15 ) 2 (Te 0.83 Se 0.17 ) 3 can reach 0.96 at 360 K, whose ZT increases by 48% at 500 K correspondingly. In addition, the temperature of the peak ZT can be adjusted by varying the content of selenium, which is meaningful for the design and the fabrication of multi-scale or grade thermoelectric device.
