Transducin (β)-like 1 X-linked receptor 1 (TBL1XR1) has been demonstrated to serve a vital role in tumor progression. However, the biological role and molecular mechanisms of TBL1XR1 in lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) remain largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the biological role of TBL1XR1 and its mechanism in lung SCC. TBL1XR1 was expressed in a human bronchial epithelial cell line and in lung SCC cell lines. The present study analyzed TBL1XR1-induced proliferation, invasion and migration abilities in vitro using the cell counting kit-8 assay, cell invasion assay and wound healing assay, respectively. This study examined the effects of TBL1XR1 on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung SCC cells and activation of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β/mothers against decapentaplegic homolog (Smad) signaling pathway by western blotting. The results indicated that TBL1XR1 was upregulated in lung SCC cells. Overexpression of TBL1XR1 increased the rate of cell proliferation compared with the control group. In vitro, overexpression of TBL1XR1 promoted cell invasion and migration ability compared with the control group. In addition, overexpression of TBL1XR1 produced a mesenchymal phenotype, while cells with downregulated TBL1XR1 produced an epithelial phenotype. Overexpression of TBL1XR1 significantly increased E-cadherin protein expression whilst snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAI1), zinc finger E-box binding homebox 1 (ZEB1), p-Smad2/3, Smad2 and Smad3 protein expression was significantly reduced, compared with the control group. Downregulation of TBL1XR1 produced the opposite results. The present study indicated that TBL1XR1 contributed to lung SCC development and progression, and therefore TBL1XR1 may be a potential therapeutic target. TBL1XR1 may induce EMT of lung SCC cells through activation of the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway.

This study investigated the updated prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adults in West China and the influence of diet and behaviour on metabolic syndrome.A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 2013-2014, and multi-stage stratified clustering sampling was applied in 12 counties of Sichuan province. Data regarding metabolic syndrome and style risk factors were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires, and physical measurements were recorded following a standardized protocol. Logistic regression models were used to explore the association between metabolic syndrome and its risk factors.A total of 7,131 adults participated. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 16.9% and 23.8% according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria and the consensus definition, respectively. The International Diabetes Federation criteria failed to identify 28.8% of the participants identified by the consensus definition. The odds ratios (ORs) of suffering from Metabolic syndrome in people eating pork every week compared with at lower frequencies, people eating more than 100 g of red meat/day, people with more sedentary behaviour per day, and people consuming at least 20 cigarettes/day were 1.76 (1.09-2.84), 1.28 (1.01- 1.62), 1.03 (0.99-1.07), and 1.46 (1.12-1.92), respectively, according to the consensus definition, and 1.51 (1.09- 2.10), 1.4 (1.14-1.72), 1.07 (1.02-1.13), and 1.5 (1.16-1.94), respectively, based on the International Diabetes Federation criteria.The International Diabetes Federation criteria were less sensitive in identifying metabolic syndrome than the consensus definition. More sedentary behaviour, smoking=20 cigarettes per day, and a higher frequency of pork intake increased the risk of metabolic syndrome in this study.

Background Host genetic polymorphisms influence the fibrosis progression of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients. Previous studies have shown the association of human platelet antigens (HPAs) polymorphisms with CHC. However, little is known regarding the association of HPAs polymorphisms with the fibrosis progression of CHC. The aim of this study was to determine the association of HPA -2, -3, -5 and -15 polymorphisms with the levels of serum fibrosis marks in CHC patients. Methods The HPA -2, -3, -5 and -15 were genotyped by 5ˊ-nuclease assay in 211 CHC patients, while the serum concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen IV (CIV), amino-terminal pro-peptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP), and laminin (LN) from the same samples were measured by time resolved fluorescence immunoassay. Results The level of serum LN was significantly lower in CHC patients with HPA-15aa genotype compared to those with HPA-15ab/bb (P = 0.032) but did not differ among HPA-2, -3 and -5 genotypes. There were no difference in HA, CIV and PIIINP levels among HPA-2, -3,-5 and -15 genotypes. Conclusions This study demonstrates that HPA-15 aa polymorphism is associated lower serum LN in CHC, which suggests that HPA -15 aa may be involved in the fibrosis progression of CHC.

Industry is building larger, more complex, manycore processors on the back of strong institutional knowledge, but academic projects face difficulties in replicating that scale. To alleviate these difficulties and to develop and share knowledge, the community needs open architecture frameworks for simulation, synthesis, and software exploration which support extensibility, scalability, and configurability, alongside an established base of verification tools and supported software. In this paper we present OpenPiton, an open source framework for building scalable architecture research prototypes from 1 core to 500 million cores. OpenPiton is the world's first open source, general-purpose, multithreaded manycore processor and framework. OpenPiton leverages the industry hardened OpenSPARC T1 core with modifications and builds upon it with a scratch-built, scalable uncore creating a flexible, modern manycore design. In addition, OpenPiton provides synthesis and backend scripts for ASIC and FPGA to enable other researchers to bring their designs to implementation. OpenPiton provides a complete verification infrastructure of over 8000 tests, is supported by mature software tools, runs full-stack multiuser Debian Linux, and is written in industry standard Verilog. Multiple implementations of OpenPiton have been created including a taped-out 25-core implementation in IBM's 32nm process and multiple Xilinx FPGA prototypes.

e15130 Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitor(ICI) -associated myocarditis is rare, but it could account for a very high mortality rate. This study reviewed the occurrence of ICI-associated myocarditis in Chinese cancer patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was made on the occurrence of ICI-associated myocarditis in cancer centers of 12 3A-grade hospitals in China from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. More than 100 patients were treated with ICIs in each center. Results: A total of 2373 patients were treated with ICI alone or in combination. The incidence of ICI-associated myocarditis was 1.05% (25/2373). Of all the data elicited from 16 patients in this study, the tumor types were listed, including: melanoma, lung cancer, renal cancer, urothelial cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, etc. The 16 patients included 8 male and 8 female with a median age of 65 (36-80). 3 of them had coronary heart disease. The ICI drugs included nivolumab, pembrolizumab and toripalimab, camrelizumab, sintilimab, tislelizumab, atezolizumab. Among them, there were 10 cases of PD-1 inhibitor, 1 case of PD-L1 inhibitor, 5 cases of PD-1 inhibitor combined with chemotherapy or molecular targeted drug. ICI-associated myocarditis occurred in a median of 38 days (2-420) after treatment during which 81.2% (13/16) of them received ICI 1-2 infusions. The common clinical symptoms were palpitation, chest distress and dyspnea, in addition to 8 cases with asthenia, 4 cases with respiratory failure, 2 cases without symptoms. ECG abnormality accounted for 87.5% (14/16). The common abnormalities included: 6 cases of atrial premature contraction, 4 cases of ventricular premature contraction, 3 cases of sinus tachycardia, 1 case of Grade 3 atrioventricular, 1 case of complete right bundle block, and 1 case of acute myocardial infarction. 15 cases of abnormal troponin I or T were observed, followed by CK, CK-MB, MYO and BNP increased. 14 patients were treated with glucocorticoid. 6 patients died with the mortality rate 37.5%(6/16) and 66.7% (4/6) were over 70 years old. Conclusions: The incidence of ICI-associated myocarditis in Chinese patients is low, but the mortality rate is high. Regular monitoring of cardiac biomarkers and ECG is helpful for early diagnosis.

The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) monitors gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) coincident with gravitational wave events over the whole sky. It also monitors other burst events, such as the high-energy radiation of fast radio bursts, various GRBs, and magnetar bursts. GECAM can measure the energy spectra, light curves, and location of all kinds of bursts. GECAM consists of two small satellites which operate in the same low earth orbit but in opposite geocentric directions. To obtain an all-sky field of view, the two satellites operate in opposite orbital phases. The GECAM payload includes two kinds of detectors: charged particle detector (CPD) and gamma-ray detector (GRD). Each GRD module consists of a LaBr3:Ce scintillator and a SiPM array, and its gamma-ray detection range is 5 keV–5 MeV. GECAM retrieves the locations of events such as GRBs through analyzing the data of the multiple GRDs on both satellites. Meanwhile, the CPD consists of a plastic scintillator and a SiPM array that detects charged particles of energies from 300 keV to 5 MeV. The GECAM distinguishes the charged particle burst events in space by jointly analyzing the GRD and CPD data. The payload electronic box (EBOX) provides in-flight trigger and burst localization. The trigger and burst location data are transmitted by a BeiDou Short Message system, which allows GECAM to guide other telescopes to do follow-up observations.

Growing evidence indicates that phosphoserine phosphatase (PSPH) is up-regulated and correlates with prognosis in multiple types of cancer. However, little is known about the roles of PSPH in NSCLC. Thus, the aim of the present study was to demonstrate the expression of PSPH in human NSCLC and reveal its biological functions and the underlying mechanisms. qRT-PCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to assess the expression of NSCLC patient specimens and NSCLC cell lines. The functions of PSPH in migration and invasion were determined using trans-well and wound-healing assays. Cell proliferation capacity was performed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation assays and cell cycle analysis. We demonstrated that PSPH was overexpressed in NSCLC specimens compared with the adjacent non-tumorous specimens, and high expression of PSPH was associated with clinical stage, metastasis and gender in NSCLC. Decreased expression of PSPH inhibited NSCLC cells migration, invasion and proliferation. Most importantly, further experiments demonstrated that PSPH might regulate NSCLC progress through MAPK signaling pathways. Lastly, immunohistochemistry (IHC) revealed that the PSPH expression level was positively correlated with the clinical stage in NSCLC patients. These results suggest that PSPH may act as a putative oncogene and a potential therapeutic target in NSCLC.

Objective: Lung cancer has high incidence and mortality rate, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) takes up approximately 85% of lung cancer cases. This study is aimed to reveal miRNAs and genes involved in the mechanisms of NSCLC. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, GSE21933 (21 NSCLC samples and 21 normal samples), GSE27262 (25 NSCLC samples and 25 normal samples), GSE43458 (40 NSCLC samples and 30 normal samples) and GSE74706 (18 NSCLC samples and 18 normal samples) were searched from gene expression omnibus (GEO) database. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened from the four microarray datasets using MetaDE package, and then conducted with functional annotation using DAVID tool. Afterwards, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and module analyses were carried out using Cytoscape software. Based on miR2Disease and Mirwalk2 databases, microRNAs (miRNAs)-DEG pairs were selected. Finally, Cytoscape software was applied to construct miRNA-DEG regulatory network. Results: Totally, 727 DEGs (382 up-regulated and 345 down-regulated) had the same expression trends in all of the four microarray datasets. In the PPI network, TP53 and FOS could interact with each other and they were among the top 10 nodes. Besides, five network modules were found. After construction of the miRNA-gene network, top 10 miRNAs (such as hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-let-7b-5p, hsa-miR-15a-5p, hsa-miR-15b-5p, hsa-let-7a-5p and hsa-miR-34a- 5p) and genes (such as HMGA1, BTG2, SOD2 and TP53) were selected. Conclusion: These miRNAs and genes might contribute to the pathogenesis of NSCLC.

To evaluate the hazard of space radiation posing to the tissues, it is important to obtain exact fluxes of different radiation particles. The Radiation Gene Box (RGB) onboard SJ-10 spacecraft was an instrument designed to investigate the effects of space environment on the mESCs and drosophila. To derive the dose received by the tissues inside the RGB, the Space Radiation Detector (SRD) was installed inside it. The SRD was designed to derive the fluxes of electron, proton, hellion and gamma rays around it. If the type of the particles, the energies, the fluxes and the conversion coefficients are known, the dose received by the tissues could be evaluated. The SRD was designed as a ΔE-E solid-state telescope. By measuring the energy deposited in the three subdetectors, the particles’ type and their energies could be discriminated. The data of SRD were divided into 15 bins by the types of particles and their energy ranges. The gamma ray flux was higher than any other particle flux inside the RGB, and the electron was the most intense charge particle, while the helium ion was the most harmful radiation to the cells inside the RGB. The dose rate inside the Radiation Gene Box was much higher than in the ground, but the integral dose of 12 days inside the RGB was about 2.13 mSv. It seemed unlikely to have obvious biological effects on the tissues of mice and drosophila.

The weak compound fault feature is difficult to extract from a gearbox because the signal components are complex and inter-modulated. An approach (that is abbreviated as MRPE-MOMEDA) for extracting the weak fault features of a transmission based on a multipoint optimal minimum entropy deconvolution adjustment (MOMEDA) and the permutation entropy was proposed to solve this problem in the present paper. The complexity of the periodic impact signal was low and the permutation entropy was relatively small. Moreover, the amplitude of the impact was relatively large. Based on these advantages, the multipoint reciprocal permutation entropy (MRPE) was proposed to track the impact fault source of the weak fault feature in gearbox compound faults. The impact fault period was indicated through MRPE. MOMEDA achieved signal denoising. The optimal filter coefficients were solved using MOMEDA. It exhibits an outstanding performance for noise suppression of gearbox signals with a periodic impact. The results from the transmission show that the proposed method can identify multiple faults simultaneously on a driving gear in the 4th gear of the transmission.

Brain metastasis (BM) is the primary contributor to mortality in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Although the findings of NSCLC genetic sequencing studies suggest the potential for personalizing therapeutic approaches, the genetic profiles and underlying mechanisms of BM progression remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the genetic profiles of brain metastases from NSCLC in six patients with primary tumors and corresponding BM samples via whole exome sequencing and targeted panel sequencing. We have demonstrated considerable genetic heterogeneity between primary lung cancer and corresponding brain metastases specimens. High-frequency mutations were found in NOTCH2,NOTCH2NL,FANCD2,EGFR, and TP53. Additionally, EGFR and TP53 consistently exhibited high frequencies of mutation between primary tumors and corresponding brain metastases. The implication is that most of the genetic alterations may be acquired or lost during malignant progression, and the stable EGFR and TP53 mutational status between paired primary tumors and metastatic sites confirms that most mutations detected on analysis of the primary tumor or metastases are sufficient for clinical decision-making, and suggest there is no need to re-biopsy recurrent tumors or metastases for most NSCLC patients.

Background: Increased arterial stiffness measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been shown to be an important parameter in the assessment of cardiovascular risk. However little is known about its longitudinal development from childhood to adulthood and its possible sociodemographic, anthropometric, hemodynamic and behavioral moderators. Methods and Results: Individual growth curves of carotid-distal PWV across age were created for 559 African American and European American males and females with a maximum of 5 assessments over a 13-year period (age, 13.7-37.3). African Americans and males had significantly higher PWV than did European Americans and females (Ps Conclusion: We observed significant ethnic and gender differences in longitudinal trajectories of PWV in youth and young adults. Apart from these ethnicity and gender effects, individual differences in PWV growth can largely be explained by mean arterial pressure, waist circumstance, marital status and illegal drug use.

Although recent genome-wide association studies have identified a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with platelet count and mean platelet volume (MPV), it is unclear whether polymorphisms in the human platelet antigens (HPA) genes are associated with platelet count and MPV. The aim of this study was to determine the association of the HPA-2, -3, -5 and -15 polymorphisms with platelet count and MPV.The HPA were genotyped by 5'-nuclease assay in 139 healthy Chinese Han individuals, while platelet count and MPV from the same samples were measured using an hematology cell analyzer.The platelet count was significantly lower in the individuals with the HPA-2aa genotype compared to those with HPA-2ab (P = 0.020), and significantly higher in individuals with HPA-5aa and HPA-15aa genotypes compared to those with HPA-5ab (P = 0.045) and HPA-15ab/bb (P = 0.032), respectively. On the other hand, platelet count of individuals with the HPA-3aa and HPA-3ab/bb genotypes did not differ significantly (P = 0.084). The MPV was significantly lower in individuals with HPA-5aa genotype compared to those with HPA-5ab (P = 0.001) but did not differ among the HPA-2, -3 and -15 genotypes. Furthermore, HPA-2, -5 and -15 polymorphisms were identified as independent factors for the platelet count and HPA-5 polymorphism was shown as an independent factor for MPV.This study demonstrates that HPA-2, -5 and -15 polymorphisms are associated with the platelet count while HPA-5 polymorphism is associated with MPV. This finding will further our understanding of the association of HPA polymorphisms with platelet-related diseases.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD), the last stage of chronic renal failure, is a global health problem. The number of ESRD patients worldwide is increasing faster than the number of kidneys available per year for renal transplantation. Most of the ESRD patients are awaiting renal transplantation. The immune response to the transplanted kidney is directed mainly against mismatched human leukocyte antigen (HLA) glycoproteins expressed on donor tissues. Thus, the analysis of HLA allele and haplotype polymorphisms is valuable not only for identifying ESRD susceptibility factors but also to improve graft survival.In this study, 163 Han ESRD patients were recruited to participate. The blood samples were genotyped by sequence-specific oligonucleotide method. A group of 14,529 healthy Chinese Han individuals registered at the Dalian Blood Center as bone marrow donors, living in the same region and of the same ethnicity, were used as controls.We found that only one allele, HLA-DRB1*12, showed a positive association with ESRD (p = 0.004, pThey were potentially valuable predictors for evaluating the risk of ESRD in the Dalian Han population.

The monocytic MDSC (M‐MDSC) is one of the major types of MDSCs, which play important roles in suppression of antitumor immunity. However, the mechanisms underlying how M‐MDSCs so heavily accumulate in patients with cancer are still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to identify miRNAs that regulate the proliferation and differentiation of M‐MDSCs. Microarray analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between tumor‐induced M‐MDSCs (TM‐MDSCs) and their counterparts from tumor‐free mice. The miRNAs and their target genes that regulate the proliferation and differentiation of myeloid cells were predicted by bioinformatics analysis and validated by RT‐qPCR. Luciferase reporter assays were used to analyze the relationships between miRNAs and target genes. Overexpression of candidate miRNAs and target genes in myeloid cells was conducted to verify their functions in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Our data showed that miR‐486 was overexpressed in TM‐MDSCs. Cebpa was predicted to be one of the target genes of miR‐486 that regulates the proliferation of myeloid cells. Expression of Cebpa was inversely correlated with miR‐486 in TM‐MDSCs, and we found that overexpression of miR‐486 suppressed the expression of Cebpa in both 293T cells determined by luciferase reporter assays and in myeloid cells determined by RT‐qPCR. Overexpression of miR‐486 promoted proliferation and suppressed apoptosis in myeloid cells, as opposed to overexpression of Cebpa, which promoted the opposing phenotype. Overexpression of either miR‐486 or Cebpa inhibited differentiation of myeloid cells. This study indicates that miR‐486 promotes proliferation and suppresses apoptosis in myeloid cells by targeting Cebpa in vitro, suggesting that miR‐486 and Cebpa might be involved in the expansion of TM‐MDSCs in tumor‐bearing mice.

Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) is a silent chemokine receptor which selectively binds angiogenic chemokines without inducing conventional signaling responses. DARC has been reported to inhibit the development of multiple cancers through clearance of angiogenic chemokines. However, its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. We investigated the expression of DARC in CRC and explored correlation of DARC expression with clinical pathological features and microvessel density (MVD). The protein expression levels of DARC were detected by immunohistochemistry in 90 CRC and 64 paired unaffected tissues. The mRNA levels of DARC were detected by quantitative real-time PCR in 15 CRC and paired unaffected tissues. MVD in CRC was also assessed by immunohistochemistry of CD34. We found that the mRNA and protein expression levels of DARC were significantly lower in CRC than in the unaffected tissues (p 0.05). The DARC protein expression levels were positively correlated with DARC mRNA expression levels in both CRC (p 0.001) and unaffected tissues (p 0.001). We also found that DARC expression was significantly correlated with tumor differentiation (p 0.001), lymph node metastasis (p 0.01) and TNM stage (p 0.05). Moreover, we observed a strong negative relationship between DARC expression and MVD in CRC (p 0.001). We showed that DARC expression is down-regulated in CRC and associated with clinical pathological features and MVD of CRC. DARC might be involved in tumorigenesis, progression, angiogenesis, and metastasis of CRC.

Objective: Medullary breast carcinoma is a rare breast carcinoma with good prognosis. Although it has been established that axillary lymph node metastasis is a poor prognostic factor, little is known about the relationship between axillary lymph node metastasis and clinicopathological characteristics of medullary breast carcinoma patients. The aim of this study was to identify factors that predict occurrence of axillary lymph node metastasis in medullary breast carcinoma patients. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of axillary lymph node status and the relevant clinicopathological characteristics in 49 triple-negative medullary breast carcinoma patients with axillary lymph node dissection between November 2004 and July 2011. Results: A total of 49 patients were enrolled in the study. Fourteen patients (28.6%) had axillary lymph node metastasis that was confirmed pathologically. Axillary lymph node metastasis was not associated with age, menopausal status, primary tumor size or its location, the degree of inflammation within the tumor or mitotic count. However, we found a statistically significant association between axillary lymph node metastasis and Ki67 labeling index in primary tumors (P < 0.001). Conclusions: There is a positive association between Ki67 labeling index in the primary tumor and axillary lymph node metastasis in triple-negative medullary breast carcinoma patients.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women worldwide. Brain metastasis (BMs) of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most important cause of death. This study aimed to explore the association of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and BMs in NSCLC. We analyzed 50 NSCLC patients with BMs and 50 match-paired NSCLC patients with no brain metastases (NBMs). Background/Aims: MiR-19b has been reported to be involved in several malignancies, but its role in multiple myeloma (MM) is still unknown. The objective of this study was to explore the biological mechanism of miR-19b in the progression of MM. Methods: First, we performed real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blot to study the expression of miR-19b, tuberous sclerosis 1 (TSC1), and caspase-3 in different groups. MTT assay was performed to explore the effect of miR-19b on survival and apoptosis of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Computation analysis and luciferase assay were utilized to confirm the interaction between miR-19b and TSC1. Results: A total of 38 participants comprising 20 subjects with MM and 18 healthy subjects as normal controls were enrolled in our study. Real-time PCR showed dramatic upregulation of miR-19b, but TSC1 was evidently suppressed in the MM group. MiR-19b overexpression substantially promoted clonogenicity and cell viability, and further inhibited apoptosis of CSCs in vitro. Furthermore, miR-19b overexpression downregulated the expression of caspase-3, which induced apoptosis. Using in silico analysis, we identified that TSC1 might be a direct downstream target of miR-19b, and this was further confirmed by luciferase assay showing that miR-19b apparently reduced the luciferase activity of wild-type TSC1 3´-UTR, but not that of mutant TSC1 3´-UTR. There was also evident decrease in TSC1 mRNA and protein in CSCs following introduction of miR-19b. Interestingly, reintroduction of TSC1 abolished the miR-19b-induced proliferation promotion and apoptosis inhibition in CSCs. Conclusion: These findings collectively suggest that miR-19b promotes cell survival and suppresses apoptosis of MM CSCs via targeting TSC1 directly, indicating that miR-19b may serve as a potential and novel therapeutic target of MM based on miRNA expression.

Few studies investigate ELT with young learners in China, although conservative estimates suggest 60-million primary school children are studying English; even fewer studies investigate Chinese young learners’ L2 motivation. This article reports on a study of English learning motivation among Chinese primary school pupils through analysing elicited metaphors. This innovative method can yield insights into young learners’ thinking and feelings which a standard interview method may not reveal. One hundred and twenty-eight pupils aged 7 and 9 years old (Y1 and Y3, respectively) from four different Chinese primary schools who had studied English for six months gave 362 elicited metaphors with reasoning entailments. Analysis shows these learners are highly positive about learning English; they feel happiness and excitement; they are influenced by interactive methods and learning through play; and believe they attain useful and purposeful outcomes. Some Y3 students indicated their dynamic awareness of English learning difficulties, but believed they would still achieve desired outcomes.

Background Duffy blood group genotyping is useful to ensure transfusion safety and determine the association of Duffy blood group polymorphism with diseases, and therefore has its clinical significance. In order to improve the existing methods for genotyping of Duffy blood group, which normally require post-PCR manipulation, a new method was developed by using 5′-nuclease assay (NA) with TaqMan minor groove binding (MGB) probes. Methods Primers and TaqMan-MGB probes were designed and synthesized to genotype FY*A and FY*B alleles at Duffy blood group locus on a real-time PCR platform. A total of 120 samples were genotyped by using the new 5′-NA and conventional polymerase chain reaction with allele-specific primers (PCR-ASP). The results obtained by the two methods were compared. Results There was a complete concordance of results for all samples genotyped by 5′-NA and PCR-ASP. The retesting results of 5′-NA were consistent with those of the initial testing. The detection limit of 5′-NA was determined as 100 pg per reaction. The FY*A and FY*B allelic frequencies were 93.3% and 6.7% respectively in the Chinese Han population in Dalian. Conclusions The 5′-NA for genotyping of Duffy blood group is simple, rapid, reliable, reproducible, sensitive, and high-throughput and is superior to PCR-ASP used in routine genotyping.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, because of its aggressive and highly metastatic ability even in its early stages. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) have been reported to be vital to pancreatic cancer progression via regulating tumorigenesis and metastasis. Studies have shown that CAFs also mediate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in tumor cells. Curcumin has recently been reported to have anticancer effects by modulating pathways involved in cancer progression. Therefore, we hypothesized that curcumin might inhibit EMT by targeting CAFs in pancreatic cancer. In this study, we show that the CAF-mediated enhancement of pancreatic cancer cell migration and metastasis was blocked by curcumin. In conclusion, our data provide the first evidence that curcumin inhibits the migration and metastasis of pancreatic cancer cells by reducing the mesenchymal characteristics of CAFs, which reverses the EMT phenotypes of pancreatic cancer cells.

We present the primary observations of the Solar X-ray Monitor (SXM) payload onboard the ChangE-1 lunar exploration satellite, which was launched on 24 October 2007. The SXM payload uses a solid-state silicon P-I-N photo-diode (Si-PIN) whose dynamic energy ranges from 1 keV to 10 keV. The long-term integrated spectra at different solar-activity levels as observed by the SXM are presented. By fitting these spectra with an optically thin plasma model, the two-minute temperature variation of the solar coronal plasma during a solar flare is also presented.

The aim was to compare the efficacy and toxicity of paclitaxel plus platinum (TP) with gemcitabine plus platinum (GP) in untreated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer by a meta-analysis. An extensive literature search was performed for relevant randomized controlled trials. Studies were evaluated for eligibility and quality, and then the data were extracted and analyzed using Review Manager 5.1 software. Publication bias was evaluated according to Begg’s funnel plot and Egger’s test using Stata/SE version 10.1 software. Six randomized controlled trials including 2,793 patients were ultimately identified. The meta-analysis demonstrated that the efficacy was comparable between TP and GP regimens according to the pooled relative risks (RRs) for overall response rate [0.99, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.88–1.13, p = 0.92], disease control rate (0.96, 95 % CI = 0.90–1.03, p = 0.24) and 1-year survival (0.99, 95 % CI = 0.90–1.09, p = 0.87), and the hazard ratios for overall survival (1.06; 95 % CI = 1.00–1.13, p = 0.07) and time-to-progression of disease (1.05, 95 % CI = 0.97–1.14, p = 0.20). Brain metastasis as the first symptom of lung cancer is a unique clinical entity. We conducted a retrospective study to investigate the clinical characteristics and survival of patients with lung cancer whose first symptom was brain metastases in an Asian population.A retrospective study of 186 such patients who had been admitted to one institution in China between January 1, 2003 and December 30, 2008 was performed. The following data were collected and analyzed: manifesting signs and symptoms, imaging studies, extracerebral metastases, initial diagnosis, treatment, and patient survival.This sample population exhibited high rates of misdiagnosis upon initial presentation (46.8 %). Fifty-seven (30.6 %) patients presented with silent extracerebral metastases. Pathologies among this cohort varied, and adenocarcinomas were most commonly observed. Most patients received surgical resection, and some patients had additional whole-brain radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery. The median survival time for the entire cohort was 15 months (95 % confidence interval, 12.9-17.1 months). Survival rates for 1, 2, and 5 years were 58.2, 34.2, and 6.5 %, respectively. The median survival time was 15, 14, 19, and 7 months for the gross total resection, incomplete resection, surgery + whole-brain radiotherapy, and surgery + stereotactic radiosurgery groups, respectively.Brain metastasis as the first symptom of lung cancer is a distinct clinical entity. Although overall survival was poor, combined treatments based on surgery for selected patients were reasonable with the exception of a minority who experienced long-term survival.

The dynamic nature of the brain is critical for the success of treatments aimed at restoring vision at the retinal level. The success of these treatments relies highly on the functionality of the surviving neurons along the entire visual pathway. Electrophysiological properties at the retina level have been investigated during the progression of retinal degeneration; however, little is known about the changes in electrophysiological properties that occur in the primary visual cortex (V1) during the course of retinal degeneration. By conducting extracellular recording, we examined the electrophysiological properties of V1 in S334ter-line-3 rats (a transgenic model of retinal degeneration developed to express a rhodopsin mutation similar to that found in human retinitis pigmentosa patients). We measured the orientation tuning, spatial and temporal frequency tunings and the receptive field (RF) size for 127 V1 neurons from 11 S334ter-3 rats and 10 Long-Evans (LE) rats. V1 neurons in the S334ter-3 rats showed weaker orientation selectivity, lower optimal spatial and temporal frequency values and a smaller receptive field size compared to the LE rats. These results suggest that the visual cognitive ability significantly changes during retinal degeneration.

It is hypothesized that high expression of the excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) gene might be a positive prognostic factor, but predict decreased sensitivity to platinum-based chemotherapy. Results from the published data are inconsistent. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship between ERCC1 and the prognosis and predictive response to chemotherapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a meta-analysis was performed. An electronic search of the PubMed and Embase database was performed. Hazard ratio (HR) for overall survival (OS) was pooled in early stage patients received surgery alone to analyze the prognosis of ERCC1 on NSCLC. HRs for OS in patients received surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy and in patients received palliative chemotherapy and relative risk (RR) for overall response to chemotherapy were aggregated to analyze the prediction of ERCC1 on NSCLC. The pooled HR indicated that high ERCC1 levels were associated with longer survival in early stage patients received surgery alone (HR, 0.69; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.58-0.83; P = 0.000). There was no difference in survival between high and low ERCC1 levels in patients received surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy (HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 0.93-2.12; P = 0.106). However, high ERCC1 levels were associated with shorter survival and lower response to chemotherapy in advanced NSCLC patients received palliative chemotherapy (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.39-2.22; P = 0.000; RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.93; P = 0.007; respectively). The meta-analysis indicated that high ERCC1 expression might be a favourable prognostic and a drug resistance predictive factor for NSCLC.

A high resolution solar soft X-ray spectrometer (SOX) payload onboard a satellite is developed. A silicon drift detector (SDD) is adopted as the detector of the SOX spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of the detectors and their readout electronics, a data acquisition unit and a payload data handling unit. A ground test system is also developed to test SOX. The test results show that the design goals of the spectrometer system have been achieved.

This study was designed to investigate the nature of activities in an immersion English class and a non-immersion English class in the mainland of China, and to find out the differences between these two types of class through data gained from observation and interviews. Spoken discourse analysis was used to analyze the data, where Engestrom’s activity complex system was used as the analytical framework to examine the nature of activities in the two types of classes. The results showed that it is the dynamic and situated nature of activity that makes a difference between the activities in these two classes. The interaction among the activity components, the social relations emerging through the process, the use of target language as the main mediational tool, and the subject content revealed in the activities enhance our emic understanding of the nature of activities. Implications can be drawn for English language teaching and for students’ English language learning for the schools in the mainland of China. This study contributes to both immersion education and classroom interaction.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among all gynecological cancers. This is mainly attributed to its frequent presentation at an advanced stage (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III-IV). Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) is critically involved in the carcinogenesis and development of ovarian cancer. A functional insertion/deletion polymorphism (-94 ins/del ATTG) in the promoter region of the NFKB1 gene, which encodes the p50 subunit of the NF-κB protein, has been recently identified and shown to increase the susceptibility to many diseases. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between this polymorphism and the risk of advanced ovarian cancer in a Chinese population. A total of 179 advanced ovarian cancer patients and 223 healthy controls were recruited into this study. Genotypes were determined using polymerase chain reaction-capillary electrophoresis method. The insertion increased the risk of advanced ovarian cancer (odds ratio = 2.111, 95% confidence intervals = 1.125-3.961, p = 0.019 for heterozygote insertion, and odds ratio = 2.656, 95% confidence intervals = 1.397-5.051, p = 0.002 for homozygote insertion) compared with homozygote deletion. Similar results were seen in age-adjusted analyses (p 0.05). Our preliminary results suggest that NFKB1-94 ins/del ATTG promoter polymorphism may be associated with increased susceptibility to advanced ovarian cancer.

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was performed to compare the efficacy, quality of life (QOL), symptom improvement and toxicities of gefitinib with docetaxel in previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library and references of published trials were searched. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. The hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), relative risks (RRs) for overall response rate, QOL and symptom improvement, and odds ratios (ORs) for main toxicities were pooled using STATA package.Four multicenter, randomized controlled trials involving 2257 patients with previously treated advanced NSCLC were ultimately analyzed. The pooled HRs showed no significant difference in OS and PFS between the two groups (HR = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.92-1.12, p = 0.70; HR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.88-1.07, p = 0.57, respectively). Gefitinib significantly improved overall response rate (RR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.02-2.45, p = 0.04) and QOL (RR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.27-1.88, p = 0.00 by Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung and RR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.43-2.42, p = 0.00 by Trial Outcome Index, respectively). Gefitinib had fewer grade 3 or 4 neutropenia and fatigue (OR = 0.02, 95% CI = 0.01-0.03, p = 0.00; and OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.32-0.70, p = 0.00, respectively), but more grade 3 or 4 rash (OR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.24-6.63, p = 0.01) than docetaxel. The grade 3 or 4 nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and symptom improvement were comparable between the two drugs.In conclusion, although similar OS and PFS, gefitinib showed an advantage over docetaxel in terms of objective response rate, QOL and tolerability. Therefore, gefitinib is an important and valid treatment option for previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with brain metastases as the initial manifestation of their systemic cancer in a Chinese population, a retrospective study of 254 such patients admitted to Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China between January 1, 2003 and December 30, 2008 was performed. Data were collected to determine the features of this group (i.e., manifesting signs and symptoms, imaging studies, extracerebral metastases, primary tumor sites, initial diagnosis, and survival data). Common symptoms included headache and motor impairment. The distribution of brain metastases paralleled blood flow, and the majority of brain metastases were located in the cerebral hemispheres. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was more sensitive than computed tomography (CT) for confirming presence of brain lesions. This distinct clinical entity exhibited high rates of misdiagnosis at initial presentation. Pathology varied, and adenocarcinomas were most commonly observed. Underlying primary tumors were identified in 84.2% of patients, most often located in lung (71.7%), followed by digestive tract. Chest CT had high yield. Sixty-two patients presented with silent extracerebral metastases at initial presentation. Median survival time was 15 months (95% confidence interval, 12.2-17.8 months). Survival rates for 1, 2, and 5 years were 59.2%, 23.2%, and 15.1%, respectively. Contrast-enhanced MRI had high yield for detection of brain metastases. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histologic type. Given the high frequency of primary lung tumors and the sensitivity of chest CT, chest CT should be a part of the initial screen of primary site with brain metastases as the initial manifestation. Metastatic dissemination of malignancy to the brain as the initial manifestation is generally associated with dismal prognosis, with the exception of a minority who experience long survival.

Purpose To compare the efficacy and toxicities of chemotherapy plus cetuximab (Erbitux, E; E-chemo) with chemotherapy alone (chemo alone) in patients with previously untreated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The primary endpoint was overall survival; the secondary endpoints were progression-free survival, overall response rate, one-year survival and safety. Methods The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library, conference proceedings, database of ongoing trials and references of published trials and reviews were screened. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. The hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival and progression-free survival, relative risks (RRs) for overall response rate and one-year survival, and odds ratios (ORs) for the different types of toxicity were pooled using STATA SE10.1 package. Results Four trials involving 2018 patients with previously untreated NSCLC were ultimately analyzed. The pooled HR for overall survival (HR, 0.87; 95%CI, 0.79–0.96; p = 0.004) was in favor of E-chemo, which also gave rise to a higher overall response rate (RR, 1.19; 95%CI, 1.04–1.37; p = 0.013). The analysis failed to show benefit of E-chemo in progression-free survival (HR, 0.91; 95%CI, 0.83–1.00; p = 0.06) and one-year survival (RR, 1.10; 95%CI, 0.98–1.26; p = 0.172). E-chemo indeed caused more grade 3/4 rash and infusion reaction (OR, 43.86; 95%CI, 12.46–154.44; p = 0.000; OR, 3.69; 95%CI, 1.89–7.25; p = 0.000; respectively). Conclusion Our data showed that the addition of cetuximab to chemotherapy would improve overall survival and overall response rate. It may provide new option for clinical treatment for untreated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. The side effects of E-chemo are predictable and manageable.

Purpose To compare the efficacy and toxicities of irinotecan/platinum (IP) with etoposide/platinum (EP) in patients with previously untreated extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (E-SCLC). Methods The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library, conference proceedings, databases of ongoing trials, and references of published trials and review articles were searched. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. The relative risk for overall response to treatment, hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and odds ratios for the different types of toxicity were pooled by STATA package. Results Six trials involving 1476 patients with previously untreated E-SCLC were ultimately analyzed. The intention-to-treatment analysis indicated that IP regimens could acquire more overall response than EP regimens (relative risk=1.10, 95% confidence interval {lsqb;CI{rsqb;: 1.00–1.21, p = 0.043). The pooled HR showed that IP could prolong OS (HR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.66–0.99, p = 0.044). Nevertheless, the pooled HR failed to show a favorable PFS in IP regimens (HR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.64–1.06, p = 0.139). IP regimens led to less grade 3 to 4 anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia but more grade 3 to 4 vomiting and diarrhea than EP regimens. Treatment-related deaths were comparable between the two groups. Conclusion Although the PFS was similar from this meta-analysis, our results suggest that IP might have an advantage in overall response and OS compared with EP with less hematological toxicities. The IP regimens may be an alternative of EP regimens in the first-line treatment of E-SCLC.

Although some randomized controlled trials had compared the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody rituximab plus chemotherapy (R-chemo) to chemotherapy alone for B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the curative effects of R-chemo were still controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to examine the efficacy of using R-chemo compared with the identical chemotherapy alone in the patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.Medical databases and conference proceedings were searched for randomized controlled trials which compared R-chemo with chemotherapy alone in patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Endpoints were overall survival, overall response, disease control, and adverse events.Twelve eligible trials were identified, reporting outcomes of 4 996 patients. Fixed-effects analysis showed overall survival to be superior for R-chemo-treated patients (relative risks [RR], 1.09; 95%confidence interval [CI], 1.06-1.12, p0.00001). Superiority was also observed for the patients receiving R-chemo with respect to overall response (RR, 1.17; 95%CI, 1.10-1.25, p0.00001), complete response (RR, 1.52; 95%CI, 1.27-1.82, p0.00001), and disease control (RR, 1.36; 95%CI, 1.26-1.46, p0.00001). R-chemo improved overall survival, overall response and disease control in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (RR, 1.11, 95%CI: 1.06-1.16, p 0.0001; RR, 1.09, 95%CI: 1.01-1.19, p = 0.03 and RR, 2.00, 95%CI: 1.59-2.53, p0.00001, respectively) and follicular lymphoma (RR, 1.08, 95%CI: 1.04-1.12, p0.0001; RR, 1.19, 95%CI: 1.07-1.33, p = 0.001 and RR, 2.58, 95%CI: 1.61-4.12, p 0.0001, respectively). The Chinese second lunar satellite CE-2, which carries an X-ray spectrometer (XRS), will be launched at the end of 2010. In order to estimate the scientific results of XRS, we simulate the anticipated lunar X-ray spectra observed by XRS by using the expected mean solar X-ray flux in 2011. We also obtain the integration time and the spatial resolution required to achieve a certain significance level for the major lunar rock-forming elements in different solar activity conditions. It is expected that a spatial resolution of finer than 100 kilometers can be achieved for elements Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe.

Whether platinum plus gemcitabine or vinorelbine are equally effective in the treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still controversial, a meta-analysis was performed to compare the gemcitabine plus platinum with vinorelbine plus platinum regimens in first-line treatment of advanced NSCLC.A literature search was performed in PubMed database, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) database, the Physician Data Query (PDQ) database, EMBASE and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting abstracts. The following keywords were used: "non small cell lung cancer," or "Carcinoma, Non-Small-Cell Lung". Reference lists of original articles and review articles were also examined. The published languages and years were not limited. The trials searched were evaluated for eligibility and quality, and then the data were abstracted and analyzed. Endpoints were overall survival, overall response, and toxicity. Statistical tests for heterogeneity were one-sided; statistical tests for effect estimates were two-sided.Nine randomized controlled trials involving 2186 patients were identified from 453 reports. They were all published as full-text articles. The intention-to-treatment (ITT) analysis demonstrated that the patients with gemcitabine plus platinum regimens had an equal overall response rate in comparison with vinorelbine plus platinum regimens (RR, 0.91; 95%CI, 0.81-1.03; P=0.15). Furthermore, the 1-year survival rate for the two platinum-based regimens were comparable (RR, 1.06; 95%CI, 0.96-1.18; P=0.27). Subgroup analysis comparing the cisplatin plus gemcitabine or vinorelbine had achieved the same results. Vinorelbine plus platinum regimens led to more frequent grade 3 or 4 of neutropenia, nephrotoxicity, constipation and phlebitis (OR, 0.37; 95%CI, 0.26-0.52; P0.00001; OR, 0.38; 95%CI, 0.25-0.57; P0.00001; OR, 0.50; 95%CI, 0.27-0.92; P=0.03 and OR, 0.13; 95%CI, 0.05-0.32; P0.00001, respectively), while gemcitabine plus platinum chemotherapy inclined to developing more grade 3 or 4 thrombocytopenia (OR, 11.37; 95%CI, 4.56-28.38; P0.00001). The incidence of grade 3 or 4 anemia, nausea and vomiting were almost comparable between the two arms (OR, 1.12; 95%CI, 0.62-2.02; P=0.71 and OR, 0.72; 95%CI, 0.41-1.28; P=0.27, respectively). Similar results were also achieved in subgroup analyses between the gemcitabine and vinorelbine in combination with the cisplatin.It could be concluded that the efficacy were similar between the platinum plus gemcitabine or vinorelbine regimens. The choice of platinum plus gemcitabine or vinorelbine depends on the toxicity of the drugs and patients' tolerance.

As the nearest celestial body to the earth, the moon has become a hot spot again in astronomy field recently. The element analysis is a much important subject in many lunar projects. Remote X-ray spectrometry plays an important role in the geochemical exploration of the solar bodies. Because of the quasi-vacuum atmosphere on the moon, which has no absorption of X-ray, the X-ray fluorescence analysis is an effective way to determine the elemental abundance of lunar surface. The CE-1 X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (CE-1/XFS) aims to map the major elemental compositions on the lunar surface. This paper describes a method for quantitative analysis of elemental compositions. A series of ground base experiments are done to examine the capability of XFS. The obtained results, which show a reasonable agreement with the certified values at a 30% uncertainty level for major elements, are presented.

However, the 1-year survival rate for the two platinum-based regimens were comparable (RR, 1.00, 95%CI, 0.94-1.07; P=0.93), Both subgroup analysis comparing the doublet or triplet regimens of cisplatin or carboplatin in combination with new agents and the same agents had achieved the same results. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy led to more frequent grade 3 or 4 of nausea and vomiting, and nephrotoxicity (OR, 0.39; 95%CI, 0.30-0.52; P0.00001 and OR, 0.31; 95%CI, 0.17-0.56; P=0.0001), while carboplatin-based chemotherapy inclined to developing more grade 3 or 4 thrombocytopenia, however, there were no statistical significance (OR, 1.63; 95%CI, 0.94-2.82; P=0.08). The risk of grade 3 or 4 anemia, neutropenia and neurotoxicity was almost comparable between the two arms (OR, 0.78; 95%CI, 0.59-1.02; P=0.07; OR, 1.08; 95%CI, 0.80-1.45; P=0.61 and OR, 1.59; 95%CI, 0.81-3.14; P=0.18, respectively). The subgroup analyses of the comparison between the doublet or triplet regimens of cisplatin and carboplatin in combination with the same agents, respectively, also achieved similar results, with the exception of thrombocytopenia between the two groups (OR, 1.94; 95%CI, 1.47-2.68; P0.00001), which showed statistically significant. Cisplatin arm inclined to causing more treatment-related deaths compared as carboplatin arm, but there was no statistical significance (OR, 0.70; 95%CI, 0.48-1.02; P=0.06).Given cisplatin-based regimens had a higher overall response rate as compared with carboplatin-based regimens, there was not a survival advantage in the cisplatin group. Therefore, the toxicity profile might play an important role in decision to choose cisplatin-based or carboplatin-based regimens.

It has proved difficult to find strong and replicable genetic linkages for complex diseases, since each susceptibility gene makes only a modest contribution to onset. This is partly because high-efficacy genetic markers are not usually available. The aim of this article is to explore the possibility that the total number of tandem repeats in one STR locus, rather than the frequencies of different alleles, is a higher efficacy quantitative genetic marker. DNA samples were collected from schizophrenic patients and from a control population. Alleles of the short tandem repeats (STR) loci D3S1358, vWA, and FGA were determined using the STR Profiler Plus PCR amplification kit. The two groups did not differ statistically in the frequencies of alleles at the D3S1358, vWA, or FGA loci. However, a significant difference was obtained in the vWA locus when the total number of core unit repeats was compared between the schizophrenia and control groups (33.28 ± 2.61 vs. 32.35 ± 2.58, P < 0.05). It seems that the number of STR repeats may be a new, quantitative, and higher efficacy genetic marker for directly indicating genetic predisposition to complex hereditary diseases such as schizophrenia.

The solar flare occurred on April 2, 2001 is the biggest flare in 23rd cycle of solar activity, which is companied by a big solar proton event. We study this event by combining the observational results from spacecraft SZ2/XD and satellite ZY1/CBMC. SZ2 has the orbit with 400 km height and inclination of 42degrees, and ZY1 has solar-synchronous orbit and 780km to the Earth surface. The results show that after this flare ZY1/CBMC detected the flare particles in the polar cap region and XD observed an increase of energetic electron flux near the latitude 42degrees. Morphological analysis of the temporal and spatial variations of energetic particles after this flare indicates that particles in different regions have varied origins. Those in the polar cap region come from the Earth's open field lines and those in the auroral oval and mid-latitudes near 42degrees are particles of the Earth's outer radiation belt. Data analysis and comparison show that the intensity of the solar proton event is not proportional to the X ray flux of the related solar flare. The response of energetic particles in the near Earth space is not solely related with solar X ray intensity.

From February to June in 2001, there are two instruments for energetic particle detections on board of ZY1 (CBERS-1) and SZ2 respectively. In this paper, data of energetic electrons from ZY-1/CBMC and SZ2/XD were compared for this same period. The energetic electron data from SZ-2 by a X-ray detector (XD) gives electron distribution at a height of 400 km with a declination of 42degrees, while Energetic Particle Detector in side the cabin of ZY-1 is on a polar orbit at a height of 800km, giving the global distribution of electrons of 0.5 similar to 2MeV. The results of the comparison showed that, although the height is different, the lowest latitudes where the energetic electrons are observed and the longitudinal distribution are almost the same. This indicates that down to an altitude around 400km, the energetic electrons are still controlled by geomagnetic field. This also shows that a coordinated analysis of data from these two satellite series are very helpful for understanding the lower part of earth's radiation belts.

Purpose Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in children remains to be a major side effect despite antiemetic treatment. Palonosetron is a new generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonists effective against acute and delayed nausea and vomiting. This study aimed to compare the therapeutic values of palonosetron and ondansetron in preventing pediatric CINV. Methods A prospective, randomized, double-blind, parallel controlled study was conducted in 0–18 years old cancer patients administered highly emetogenic chemotherapy, with different dosage of palonosetron or ondansetron, both followed by dexamethasone. The patients were observed for vomiting and nausea from 0 to 120 hr after chemotherapy initiation. All adverse events (AEs) during the study period were recorded. This study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, number ChiCTR-TRC-14004891. Results Between August 2014 and July 2016, 565 patients were randomly assigned to receive 5 μg/kg palonosetron (n = 185), 10 μg/kg palonosetron (n = 186), and 3 × 150 μg/kg ondansetron (n = 194), of whom 181, 185, and 189, respectively, were included in the efficacy analysis. Complete response (CR) rates during the acute phase were 69.1, 69.7, and 64.6%, respectively, in the 5 μg/kg palonosetron, 10 μg/kg palonosetron, and ondansetron groups. Purpose This study analyzed the clinicopathologic characteristics of typical medullary breast carcinoma (TMBC) in a cohort of Chinese patients. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of clinical data including general information, pathologic results, treatment regimens, and patient survival in cases of TMBC diagnosed between February 2004 and April 2011. Results A total of 117 patients were enrolled, with a median age of 52 years (range, 28∼92 years). Stage I and II disease accounted for 31.6% and 61.6% of the cases, respectively. Hormonal receptor negative disease (estrogen receptor negative, 68.4%; progestogen receptor negative, 86.3%) was more prevalent in this population. Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) positivity was 20.5%, while equivocal and HER-2 negative cases represented 16.2% and 63.2% of the cohort. The triple-negative, luminal, and HER-2 overexpressing subtypes constituted 44.4%, 31.6%, and 15.4% of the cases, respectively. The various TMBC subtypes showed no differences regarding tumor size, rates of lymph node(s) metastasis, TNM staging, treatment regimens, and 2-year recurrence rates. However, patients with triple-negative disease were more likely to be younger, when compared to those with luminal disease (P = 0.002). At a median follow-up of 56 months (range, 2–112 months), the 2-year disease-free survival and overall survival rates were 99.1% and 98.2%, respectively. Conclusion Early stage disease dominated the study cohort, and at two years after surgery, recurrence was extremely low. The heterogeneity of molecular subtypes was clearly shown, and no apparent differences were found among the clinicopathologic characteristics of the triple-negative, luminal, and HER-2 overexpressing subtypes.

Background Non-communicable diseases are leading causes of disease burden in middle income countries. Little evidence exists to determine if the primary healthcare system can effectively manage non-communicable diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of hypertension and diabetes management by the primary healthcare system. Methods We used individual level data from the 2009 National Basic Public Health Services System to assess the effectiveness of hypertension and diabetes interventions on fasting plasma glucose, and blood pressure. We analyzed the associations between fasting plasma glucose, systolic or diastolic blood pressure and risk factors. The estimated average intervention effect on data balanced with confounding variables was assessed. Results 9543 individuals who had data for fasting plasma glucose, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were included in this analysis. This study included 6681 patients with hypertension and 2222 with diabetes. The intervention lowered mean fasting plasma glucose by 0.5 mmol/L (0.4–0.6), lowered mean systolic blood pressure by 3.5 mm Hg (3.2–3.7), and lowered diastolic blood pressure by 2.9 mm Hg (2.7–3.2). Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) comprise a group of heterogeneous and immature myeloid-derived cells. MDSCs accumulate in the blood, lymphoid organs, spleens and tumor tissues under different pathogenic conditions such as infection, trauma, hematosepsis, and especially oncogenesis. MDSCs can suppress both adaptive and innate immunities through multiple mechanisms. However, most of our knowledge of MDSCs is based on pre-clinical studies. Clinical observations have shown that the number of MDSCs in the peripheral blood of patients is closely related to tumor stage, tumor burden, remote metastasis and prognosis, though inconsistencies in MDSC phenotypes among cancer patients mean that results have been inconclusive, and subsequent research progress has been slow. This review summarizes recent studies that have investigated MDSCs in cancer patients.
