Abstract

The widespread production and consumption of plastics is a pressing global issue that requires multifaceted approaches and solutions. In terms of recycling, one of the ways to repurpose waste plastics in the construction industry would be to utilize them for asphalt pavement-related applications. Although this approach can potentially provide a value-added recycling outlet for plastics, several challenges need to be resolved to maximize its usage to the highest possible extent. Based on this, the present review article provides a comprehensive background on the different pertinent aspects associated with the use of waste plastics in asphalt mixtures. Besides examining the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures containing waste plastic, the associated environmental concerns and life cycle assessment related attributes are also thoroughly deliberated. In addition, the successful demonstration of this technology through field trials in several countries is also discussed. Some of the main challenges related to the use of plastics in asphalt mixtures include the variability of plastic properties and composition, which can influence its mechanical performance and associated environmental impact. In general, the incorporation of waste plastics using certain tailored approaches can adequately meet and even enhance the typical performance parameters of asphalt mixtures. However, the effect of plastics modified asphalt mixtures on fuming and microplastics release remains unclear and needs further research. Abstract

Therapeutic modulation of TREM2-dependent microglial function might provide an additional strategy to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Although studies in animal models suggest that TREM2 is protective against Alzheimer's pathology, its effect on tau pathology and its potential beneficial role in people with Alzheimer's disease is still unclear. Our aim was to study associations between the dynamics of soluble TREM2, as a biomarker of TREM2 signalling, and amyloid β (Aβ) deposition, tau-related pathology, neuroimaging markers, and cognitive decline, during the progression of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease.We did a longitudinal analysis of data from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network (DIAN) observational study, which includes families with a history of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease. Participants aged over 18 years who were enrolled in DIAN between Jan 1, 2009, and July 31, 2019, were categorised as either carriers of pathogenic variants in PSEN1, PSEN2, and APP genes (n=155) or non-carriers (n=93). We measured amounts of cleaved soluble TREM2 using a novel immunoassay in CSF samples obtained every 2 years from participants who were asymptomatic (Clinical Dementia Rating [CDR]=0) and annually for those who were symptomatic (CDR>0). CSF concentrations of Aβ40, Aβ42, total tau (t-tau), and tau phosphorylated on threonine 181 (p-tau) were measured by validated immunoassays. Predefined neuroimaging measurements were total cortical uptake of Pittsburgh compound B PET (PiB-PET), cortical thickness in the precuneus ascertained by MRI, and hippocampal volume determined by MRI. Cognition was measured using a validated cognitive composite (including DIAN word list test, logical memory delayed recall, digit symbol coding test [total score], and minimental status examination). We based our statistical analysis on univariate and bivariate linear mixed effects models.In carriers of pathogenic variants, a high amyloid burden at baseline, represented by low CSF Aβ42 (β=-4·28 × 10-2 [SE 0·013], p=0·0012), but not high cortical uptake in PiB-PET (β=-5·51 × 10-3 [0·011], p=0·63), was the only predictor of an augmented annual rate of subsequent increase in soluble TREM2. Augmented annual rates of increase in soluble TREM2 were associated with a diminished rate of decrease in amyloid deposition, as measured by Aβ42 in CSF (r=0·56 [0·22], p=0·011), in presymptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants, and with diminished annual rate of increase in PiB-PET (r=-0·67 [0·25], p=0·0060) in symptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants. Presymptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants with annual rates of increase in soluble TREM2 lower than the median showed a correlation between enhanced annual rates of increase in p-tau in CSF and augmented annual rates of increase in PiB-PET signal (r=0·45 [0·21], p=0·035), that was not observed in those with rates of increase in soluble TREM2 higher than the median. Furthermore, presymptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants with rates of increase in soluble TREM2 above or below the median had opposite associations between Aβ42 in CSF and PiB-PET uptake when assessed longitudinally. Augmented annual rates of increase in soluble TREM2 in presymptomatic carriers of pathogenic variants correlated with decreased cortical shrinkage in the precuneus (r=0·46 [0·22]), p=0·040) and diminished cognitive decline (r=0·67 [0·22], p=0·0020).Our findings in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease position the TREM2 response within the amyloid cascade immediately after the first pathological changes in Aβ aggregation and further support the role of TREM2 on Aβ plaque deposition and compaction. Furthermore, these findings underpin a beneficial effect of TREM2 on Aβ deposition, Aβ-dependent tau pathology, cortical shrinkage, and cognitive decline. Soluble TREM2 could, therefore, be a key marker for clinical trial design and interpretation. 159. Small Lunar Crater Detection From LROC NAC Using Statistically Constrained Path Morphologies and Unsupervised Discriminate Correlation Filters

Abstract

The investigation of small lunar craters holds scientific and engineering significance. This article presents a novel method for detecting small lunar craters. It consists of three stages: seed detection, candidate crater detection, and crater evaluation. First, crater seeds are identified through morphological operations as pixels with the highest local gradient and specific gradient direction. Second, the optimal scale for each seed is estimated based on the maximum response of the established phase congruency maximum moment (PCMM) scale space. For detecting very small craters, a crater detector called statistical morphological constraint path-sets (SMPS), which leverages image spatial domain features, is proposed. It configures the image as a weighted directed graph, using path-sets centered on seeds to flexibly detect highlights and shadow regions of craters. For detecting craters with larger optimal scale, another crater detector named structural consistency constrained multipaths (SCMP) is proposed, utilizing the frequency phase features. The core idea of SCMP is to configure the phase feature type (PFT) map with the optimal scale as a directed graph. Centered on the seed, the multipath operator is designed to detect craters. Unsupervised discriminative correlation filters (UDCFs) are trained with histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) features from images or PFT maps to validate candidate craters. The results indicate that for images with a resolution of 0.5–2 m/pixel, the proposed method demonstrates good detection performance for small craters with diameters of less than 5, 5–10 m, and greater than 10 m, with an average detection rate (DR) of 0.89, 0.91, and 0.92, respectively.

160. High-Precision Geometric Calibration Model for Spaceborne SAR Using Geometrically Constrained GCPs

Abstract

The positioning accuracy of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is affected by factors, such as satellite platform instability, aging of on-board instruments, and environmental changes. Geometric calibration is a commonly employed and cost-effective method to enhance the positioning accuracy of SAR images. The classical point-based geometric calibration (PB-GC) model, however, only utilizes the location of ground control points (GCPs) and does not fully exploit the spatial relationships among the GCPs. This study introduces a high-precision geometric calibration method that builds upon the classical model for calibrating SAR imaging systems. This method incorporates the Co-Line-GC and Co-Circle-GC models, where the former uses GCPs distributed on a line while the latter uses GCPs distributed on a circle. The results reveal that, compared to the classical model, our approach enhances the positioning accuracy of Gaofen-3 and Sentinel-1A SAR images by approximately 2 m in eastern China, achieving a mean positioning accuracy of 3.02 m. In terms of calibration performance, a comparison between postcalibrated and precalibrated images indicates that the images are shifted, not distorted, and a better match of the same features between different scenes in the image mosaic is observed after calibration. The improved positioning accuracy of SAR images significantly contributes to global remote sensing mapping, land use change monitoring, and ground target detection applications.

162. Numerical analysis of blood flow in 3-D arterial bifurcations

Abstract

A major medical problem in the circulatory system is the frequent occurrence of atherosclerosis and thrombosis in arterial bends and bifurcations. Although the exact mechanism remains unclear, it has been suggested that the local fluid dynamics plays an important role. Therefore, detailed analysis of flow phenomena and hemodynamic stresses in arterial bifurcations is of immediate interest. In addition to in vivo and in vitro experiments, numerical simulations of blood flow in arterial bifurcation models also contribute to a better understanding of the flow patterns and shear stress distributions in these bifurcations, and thereby help to clarify the link between fluid dynamics and atherogenesis. The problem of blood flow in an arterial bifurcation involves many complicating factors, four of them are considered to be important, namely (i) the three-dimensional geometry of the bifurcation, (ii) the pulsatile nature of the flow, (iii) the non-Newtonian character of the blood, and (iv) the distensibility of the arterial wall. In this dissertation, a full analytical treatment of blood flow in 3-D arterial bifurcations is presented. The incompressible 3-D time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are employed to describe the flow, and a finite volume code ASTEC, which has an unstructured finite element mesh, is adopted to solve the equations. In the predictions, the non-Newtonian characteristics of the blood are taken into account and their effects on bifurcation flow fields investigated. Possibilities of accommodating the vessel wall compliance are also explored, and a simplified approach is proposed, in which the flow equations and wall displacements are solved separately within a time step, but are coupled in the sense that the boundary conditions of the former are updated through the solution of the later. This approach is valid provided that the wall movement is much slower than the motion of fluid and the flow is generally parallel to the wall. It has been applied to a straight circular tube. For bifurcation predictions, however, the vessel wall is assumed to be rigid. A comprehensive range of code validation exercises are carried out, especially for T-bifurcations. The predictions are proved reliable by comparison with published laboratory measurements. Finally, numerical predictions for physiological flow in canine femoral bifurcations are performed, in which the true bifurcation geometries are used. Results are validated against the best available in vivo measurements so far obtained. It is demonstrated that the presented numerical modelling scheme in conjunction with the new generation of super-computers can be used as an efficient and reliable tool for detailed analysis of blood flow in arterial bifurcations. Incorporation of the distensibility of the arterial wall in the bifurcation prediction will complete such an analysis. Background Numerous vaccines have been evaluated and approved for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since pregnant persons have been excluded from most clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines, sufficient data regarding safety of these vaccines for the pregnant persons and their fetus have rarely been available at the time of product licensure. However, as COVID-19 vaccines have been deployed, data on the safety, efficacy or effectiveness, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant persons and neonates are becoming increasingly available. A living systematic review (LSR) of the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant persons and newborns could provide information necessary to help guide vaccine policy decisions. Methods We aim to conduct a LSR based on biweekly searches of medical databases (e.g., MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL) and clinical trial registries to systematically identify relevant studies of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant persons. Pairs of reviewers will independently select, extract data, and conduct risk of bias assessments. We will include randomized clinical trials, quasi-experimental studies, cohort, case-control, cross-sectional studies, and case reports. Primary outcomes will be the safety (i.e., impacts on obstetric and neonatal outcomes), efficacy or effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant persons. Secondary outcomes will be immunogenicity and reactogenicity. We will conduct paired meta-analyses, including pre-specified subgroup and sensitivity analyses, and will use the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to evaluate the certainty of evidence. Conclusion This will be the first living systematic review (LSR) and meta-analysis assessing the safety, reactogenicity, immunogenicity, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant persons. An online interactive dashboard for data visualization using Microsoft Power BI will be developed to regularly update and disseminate the latest findings (an in-progress version is available at https://safeinpregnancy.org/lsr/). In addition, the findings will be disseminated through publications and presentations.

Abstract

Herein, a small series of 3-pyrrolin-2-ones was efficiently synthesized through a three-step Ugi cascade sequence. This method features readily available substrates, simple aqueous workup procedures and good yields, dramatically improving generality of reaction. Importantly, the newly product N-benzyl-2-(3-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-methyl-2-oxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2-phen-ylacetamide exhibited potent anti-proliferation in prostate cancer cell line through G1/S cell cycle arrest and targeted in PI3K/AKT/TSC2 signal pathway.

187. Energy Consumption Analysis of Door Opening with a Mobile Manipulator in the Nuclear Power Plants

Abstract

The problem of rescue is necessary for the mobile manipulator in Nuclear power plants (NPPs), however, the research on energy consumption is of great importance to the mobile manipulator in the process of rescue. In this paper, we focus on the energy consumption of nuclear power plant rescue robot about the task of door-opening, and present a method of path planning of the door opening. The energy consumption model is derived to evaluate the performances of modular manipulators. Extensive door-opening capture experiments have been carried out. The compares of the manipulator summation energy consumption of the different holding positions of knob radius rk, and the energy consumption of each joint in the same path planning are studied. Experimental results show that the minimum summation of manipulator energy consumption is the end-effector grasps the position of door knob, which is the value of rk (40mm), and the third joint of the average energy consumption is the maximal in the same path planning.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE This retrospective study aimed to compare the clinical effects of reverse digital artery island flaps and antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flaps in fingertip reconstruction. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the data of 30 consecutive patients with fingertip defects who had undergone 2 types of surgery from January 2016 to January 2019. We used reverse digital artery island flaps and antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flaps in 14 and 16 patients, respectively. Flap sensitivity was evaluated using the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and static 2-point discrimination test. Finger appearance was assessed using the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire. The operation time, flap sensitivity, range of motion of the interphalangeal joint, and complications were evaluated. RESULTS The static 2-point discrimination results of the fingers were significantly different between the antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flap group and reverse digital artery island flap group (8.07 ± 1.54 vs 5.94 ± 1.73; P < 0.05). The appearance of the fingers was significantly better in the antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flap group. Surgery using antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flaps required less time than surgery using reverse digital artery island flaps. No significant differences were found between the 2 groups in the range of motion of the interphalangeal joint or complications. CONCLUSIONS The functional outcomes were identical between the reverse digital artery island flap and antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flap methods for fingertip reconstruction. Antegrade homodigital neurovascular island flaps lead to a shorter operation time, a more satisfying appearance, and better sensory recovery.
