Allelopathy has garnered considerable attention, but the effects of different allelochemicals on invasive plants remain unclear. This study addressed the knowledge gap surrounding allelopathy and its impact on native and invasive plant species. We focused on the impact of caffeic acid and its derivatives on the growth and competitiveness of the native Lantana indica and the invasive plant Solidago canadensis. We selected three allelochemicals, caffeic acid, methyl caffeic acid, and ethyl caffeic acid, for evaluation at two concentrations (0.1 mM and 1.0 mM). Three planting methods were employed: (1) a single species of S. canadensis, (2) a single species of L. indica, and (3) a combination of S. canadensis and L. indica. In addition, a control group was also included. Results revealed that high concentrations (1 mM) of methyl caffeate (MC) and ethyl caffeate (EC) significantly reduced seed germination rate, seed germination index, and seed germination speed index of L. indica compared to a low concentration (0.1 mM). Plant height, stem diameter, biomass, and root length in the control group (CK) of S. canadensis were significantly higher than those in the treated groups. However, with increasing allelochemical concentration, L. indica’s relative competitiveness gradually decreased. These findings provide insights into the concentration-dependent effects of allelopathic compounds on the growth of L. indica and S. canadensis. By analyzing how these allelochemicals influence the growth and competitiveness of native and invasive plants, the study sheds light on the dynamics of allelochemical interactions between these species. This knowledge can be pivotal for understanding plant competition dynamics in ecosystems and could inform strategies to control invasive species or promote native plant growth.

Photocatalytic degradation plays a crucial role in wastewater treatment, and the key to achieving high efficiency is to develop photocatalytic systems that possess excellent light absorption, carrier separation efficiency, and surface-active sites. Among various photocatalytic systems, S-type heterojunctions have shown remarkable potential for efficient degradation. This work delves into the construction of S-type heterojunctions of ternary indium metal sulfide and bismuth ferrite nanofibers with the introduction of sulfur vacancy defects and morphology modifications to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance. Through the impregnation method, BiFeO3/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction materials were synthesized and optimized. The 30% BiFeO3/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction exhibited superior photocatalytic performance with higher sulfur vacancy concentration than ZnIn2S4. The in-situ XPS results demonstrate that the electrons between ZnIn2S4 and BFO are transferred via the S-Scheme, and after modification, ZnIn2S4 has a more favorable surface morphology for electron transport, and its flower-like structure interacts with the nanofibers of BFO, which has a further enhancement of the reaction efficiency for degrading pollutants. This exceptional material demonstrated a remarkable 99% degradation of Evans blue within 45 min and a significant 68% degradation of ciprofloxacin within 90 min. This work provides a feasible idea for developing photocatalysts to deal with the problem of polluted water resources under practical conditions.

Abstract Background Nocardia is a relatively rare opportunistic pathogenic bacteria group, commonly seen in patients with immunocompromised or defective immune system. It can affect multiple organs of the body and cause disseminated infection, among which most occurs in the lung, secondly in the nervous system, soft tissues, rare in the spinal cord and pituitary. No case has been reported involving lung, spinal cord, skin and pituitary gland at the same time. Case presentation We report a 55-year-old female with Nocardia infection involving the lung, skin, spinal cord, and pituitary gland. The patient underwent a full set of imaging examinations and showed typical imaging findings. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed multiple nodules with cavities in the lungs. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the vertebral body showed abnormal signal of the entire spinal cord with cavity formation and ring enhancement. The subcutaneous nodules of the abdomen were punctured under ultrasound. Through the etiological tissue culture of subcutaneous nodules and the second generation sequencing of cerebrospinal fluid, the diagnosis was finally confirmed. Conclusion Disseminated Nocardiosis is an uncommon disease. This article will report a rare case of disseminated Nocardiosis simultaneously involving the lung, spinal cord, subcutaneous soft tissue and pituitary gland, especially with neuropathy as the initial symptom. Imaging is helpful for the early diagnosis of the disease and pathological and microbiological examinations are helpful for its confirming.

ABSTRACT Phosphonates are important components of marine organic phosphorus, but their bioavailability and catabolism by eukaryotic phytoplankton remain enigmatic. Here, diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum was used to investigate the bioavailability of phosphonates and describe the underlying molecular mechanism. The results showed that 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (2-AEP) can be utilized as an alternative phosphorus source. Comparative transcriptomics revealed that the utilization of 2-AEP comprised 2 steps, including molecular uptake through clathrin-mediated endocytosis and incorporation into the membrane phospholipids in the form of diacylglyceryl-2-AEP (DAG-2-AEP). In the global ocean, we found the prevalence and dynamic expression pattern of key genes that are responsible for vesicle formation (CLTC, AP-2) and DAG-AEP synthesis (PCYT2, EPT1) in diatom assemblages. This study elucidates a distinctive mechanism of phosphonate utilization by diatoms, and discusses the ecological implications. IMPORTANCE Phosphonates contribute ~25% of total dissolved organic phosphorus in the ocean, and are found to be important for marine phosphorus biogeochemical cycle. As a type of biogenic phosphonate produced by microorganisms, 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (2-AEP) widely exists in the ocean. It is well known that 2-AEP can be cleaved and utilized by prokaryotes, but its ability to support the growth of eukaryotic phytoplankton remains unclear. Our research identified the bioavailability of 2-AEP for the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and proposed a distinctive metabolic pathway of 2-AEP utilization. Different from the enzymatic hydrolysis of phosphonates, the results suggested that P. tricornutum utilizes 2-AEP by incorporating it into phospholipid instead of cleaving the C-P bond. Moreover, the ubiquitous distribution of associated representative gene transcripts in the environmental assemblages and the higher gene transcript abundance in the cold regions were observed, which suggests the possible environmental adaption of 2-AEP utilization by diatoms.

BackgroundTo explore the prognostic value of the preoperative neutrophil-albumin ratio (NAR) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) undergoing surgical treatment.Materials and methodsThe standardized log-rank statistic was used to determine the optimal cut-off value for NAR. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the value of NAR in predicting postoperative complications. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the independent association of NAR with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in CRC patients. Restricted cubic splines were used to assess the relationship between continuous NAR and survival in CRC patients. The Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test were used to compare survival differences between low and high NAR groups. NAR-based prognostic nomograms were constructed to predict the 1–5-year PFS and OS of CRC patients. The concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve were used to evaluate the prognostic accuracy of the nomograms.ResultsA total of 1,441 CRC patients were enrolled from January 2012 to December 2016. There were 904 men (62.7%) and 537 women (37.3%), with an average age of 58.12 ± 13.15 years. High NAR was closely associated with low BMI, advanced pathological stage, colon cancer, large tumors, vascular invasion, poor differentiation, high CEA levels, long hospital stay, and recurrence and metastasis. A high NAR was an independent risk factor for postoperative complications in CRC patients (OR: 2.298, 95% CI: 1.642–3.216, p < 0.001). Patients with a high NAR had worse PFS (40.7 vs. 59.5%, p < 0.001) and OS (42.6 vs. 62.4%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, high NAR was independently associated with PFS (HR: 1.280, 95% CI: 1.031–1.589, p = 0.025) and OS (HR: 1.280; 95% CI: 1.026–1.596, p = 0.029) in CRC patients. The C-index and calibration curves showed that the NAR-based prognostic nomograms had good predictive accuracy.ConclusionHigh NAR was an independent risk factor for postoperative complications and long-term prognosis of CRC patients. NAR-based research could provide references for prognostic judgment and clinical decision-making of CRC patients.

Abstract. Skeletal muscle plays an essential role in generating the mechanical force necessary to support the movement of our body and daily exercise. Compared with cardiac and smooth muscle, in mammals, skeletal muscle exhibits remarkable regenerative capacity in response to damage. Muscle stem cells, also known as satellite cells, directly contribute to regeneration. Here, we review primary and secondary myogenesis processes with a focus on muscle stem cells, as well as the function and regulation of muscle stem cells in adult muscle regeneration in mammals.

Abstract Background Photo-thermo-sensitive genic male sterile (PTGMS) rice (Oryza sativa L.) is usually considered two-line male sterile rice because of its dual-purpose in two-line hybrid rice system: under short days and low temperatures, it is fertile and used for self-propagation, but under long days and high temperatures, it is sterile and used for hybrid seed production. Therefore, photoperiod and temperature conditions are extremely important for the fertility transition of two-line male sterile rice. In recent years, there have been frequent occurrences of abnormally low-temperature (ALT) resulting in failure of two-line hybrid rice seed production. The daily average temperature (DAT) during ALT events is sometimes higher than the critical sterility-inducing temperature (CSIT) of two-line male sterile rice, of which the night temperature is lower than the CSIT. DAT has been traditionally used as the single indicator of pollen fertility transition, but it is unknown why the fertility of two-line male sterile rice in seed production restored fertility under ALT conditions. Results For Hang93S (H93S), a newly released PTGMS line, we hypothesized fertility transition is determined mainly by the cumulative effective low temperature (ELT) and only a certain duration of low temperature is required every day during the fertility-sensitive period. This study simulated ALTs where the DAT was higher than the CSIT while some segments of night temperature were lower than the CSIT. The results showed H93S exhibited a fertility transition to varying degrees. Moreover, fertility was restored under simulated ALT conditions and pollen fertility increased with increasing cumulative ELT, indicating that the fertility transition was affected primarily by the cumulative ELT. Results also indicated that pollen fertility increased as the number of treatment days increased. Conclusions The fertility transition is caused mainly by the cumulative ELT. In two-line male sterile rice breeding, the effects of day length, ALT at night, and continuous response days should be considered together. The present study provides new insight into fertility transition so breeders can more effectively utilize the two-line male sterile rice, H93S, in breeding programs.

Abstract Background Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in many neurological diseases. This study aimed to investigate differentially expressed lncRNAs and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in the susceptibility gaining process of primed DBA/1 mice, a sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) model, to illustrate the potential role of lncRNAs in SUDEP. Methods The Arraystar mouse lncRNA Microarray V3.0 (Arraystar, Rockville, MD) was applied to identify the aberrantly expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs between primed DBA/1 mice and normal controls. The differences were verified by qRT-PCR. We conducted gene ontology (GO), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway and coexpression analyses to explore the possible function of the dysregulated RNAs. Additive manufacturing (AM) of titanium alloy entails severe microstructural heterogeneity and layer bands due to diverse thermal histories. While the thermal-microstructure relationship in AM has been reported, the details on how complex thermal histories influence the microstructural evolution have not been so addressed, and the formation of layer bands in multi-layer multi-pass builds is still unclear. To undertake such investigation, a thermal model is firstly calibrated using two part-scale blocks fabricated on differently sized substrates, and then used to study the relationship between key microstructural characteristics and the thermal cycling involved. Results show that the different evolutions of the temperature ranges just underneath the β-transus temperature (Tβ) controlled by the printing path are responsible for the different band distributions at the centre and corner of the blocks. Also, the α sizes in the normal region are closely linked to the integral area obtained from the thermal curve as temperature fluctuates between Tβ and α dissolution temperature, which helps linking AM variables to metallurgy. This further demonstrates that the α coarsening during thermal cycles is primarily driven by multi dissolution and precipation transformations instead of Ostwald ripening. Finally, the quantitative thermal-microstructure-microhardness relationship is established, helpful for the microstructural design.

Abstract Purpose A 2-m axial field-of-view, total-body PET/CT scanner (uEXPLORER) has been recently developed to provide total-body coverage and ultra-high sensitivity, which together, enables opportunities for in vivo time-activity curve (TAC) measurement of all investigated organs simultaneously with high temporal resolution. This study aims at quantifying the cumulated activity and patient dose of 2-[F-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (F-18 FDG ) imaging by using delayed time-activity curves (TACs), measured out to 8-h post-injection, for different organs so that the comparison between quantifying approaches using short-time method (up to 75 min post-injection) or long-time method (up to 8 h post-injection) could be performed. Methods Organ TACs of 10 healthy volunteers were collected using total-body PET/CT in 4 periods after the intravenous injection of F-18 FDG. The 8-h post-injection TACs of 6 source organs were fitted using a spline method (based on Origin (version 8.1)). To compare with cumulated activity estimated from spline-fitted curves, the cumulated activity estimated from multi-exponential curve was also calculated. Exponential curve was fitted with shorter series of data consistent with clinical procedure and previous dosimetry works. An 8-h dynamic bladder wall dose model considering 2 voiding were employed to illustrate the differences in bladder wall dose caused by the different measurement durations. Organ absorbed doses were further estimated using Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) method and voxel phantoms. Results A short-time measurement could lead to significant bias in estimated cumulated activity for liver compared with long-time-measured spline fitted method, and the differences of cumulated activity were 18.38% on average. For the myocardium, the estimated cumulated activity difference was not statistically significant due to large variation in metabolism among individuals. The average residence time differences of brain, heart, kidney, liver, and lungs were 8.38%, 15.13%, 25.02%, 23.94%, and 16.50% between short-time and long-time methods. Regarding effective dose, the maximum differences of residence time between long-time-measured spline fitted curve and short-time-measured multi-exponential fitted curve was 9.93%. When using spline method, the bladder revealed the most difference in the effective dose among all the investigated organs with a bias up to 21.18%. The bladder wall dose calculated using a long-time dynamic model was 13.79% larger than the two-voiding dynamic model, and at least 50.17% lower than previous studies based on fixed bladder content volume. Conclusions Long-time measurement of multi-organ TACs with high temporal resolution enabled by a total-body PET/CT demonstrated that the clinical procedure with 20 min PET scan at 1 h after injection could be used for retrospective dosimetry analysis in most organs. As the bladder content contributed the most to the effective dose, a long-time dynamic model was recommended for the bladder wall dose estimation.

Introduction Emotional disorders are often observed in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD with emotional disorders leads to poor quality of life. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with IBD with emotional disorders.Methods and analysis Nine electronic databases, including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, VIP Database and Wanfang Database, will be searched from inception to October 2021 without language restriction. The grey literature containing conference proceedings, as well as systematic reviews listed in the reference of definite publications, will also be retrieved. Randomised controlled trials either in English or Chinese reporting acupuncture therapy for IBD with emotional disorders will be included. The primary outcome is changes of emotional functioning outcomes. The Colitis Activity Index, Crohn’s Disease Activity Index, C reactive protein and adverse events will be assessed as the secondary outcomes. More than two assessors will conduct the study retrieval and selection, as well as the data extraction and evaluation of the risk of bias. Data synthesis will be performed using a random-effects model based on the results of heterogeneity. Data analysis will be performed using RevMan software (V.5.4). Moreover, the dichotomous data will be presented as risk ratios, and the continuous data will be calculated using weighted mean difference or standard mean difference.Ethics and dissemination This systematic review contains no individual patient data; thus, ethical approval is not required. Moreover, this review will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal or relevant conference.PROSPERO registration number CRD42020176340.

Objective: Immune inflammatory cells and cytokines play an important role in the occurrence and development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Acteoside has been reported to regulate the inflammation and immune response. The study aims to investigate the effects of acteoside on the expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β 1 on nephropathy in diabetic mice. Methods: C57BL/6J mice in the model group were given a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (150 mg/kg). Model mice were divided randomly into two groups: 5 without treatment, 5 treated with acteoside. After continuous administration for 8 weeks, serum, urine, and kidney tissue were collected, then, ralated biochemical parameters, pathological characteristics and MCP-1 and TGF-β1 mRNA or protein were detected. The NRK-52E cells were divided into three groups as follows: the normal control group (NC group), the high glucose group (HS group), the high glucose+acteoside group (HS+ACT group). The expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β 1 in the mRNA and protein levels were assessed with RT-PCR, western blot and ELISA. Results: The expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β 1 were significantly enhanced in DN group and dramatically reduced after acteoside treatment. Compared with those in NC group, the expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β 1 in NRK-52E cell of HS group were significantly enhanced, while both were significantly decreased in HS+ACT group compared with HS group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that Acteoside has protective effects on DN via inhibiting the expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β 1 .

In the context of digital monetary market integration, the importance of cross-border digital currency research is receiving prominent attention. This study integrated Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) and initial trust factors (ITM) into an integrative framework, which synthetically complemented the objective measures and subjective insights of digital currencies. The results indicated the integrated framework, which verified its robustness predicting the acceptance and recommendation intention of digital currency. By analyzing the two different features of digital currencies, this research puts forward a set of targeted solutions to ensure that users of Chinese and Korean digital currencies make a long-term policy for the sustainability, eventually benefitting the cross-border digital monetary transactions and economic cooperation in Asia, which leads the world to the sustainable development in the digital currencies field.

The fault detection time identified by relying on the over-voltage criterion of zero-sequence voltage often lags behind the actual occurrence time of ground faults, which may cause fault protection methods based on transient quantity principles to miss fault characteristics and lose their protection capability. To accurately estimate the time of occurrence of a single-phase-to-ground fault, this paper proposes a two-step dimensionality reduction algorithm for estimating the time of occurrence of a single-phase-to-ground fault in a distribution network. This algorithm constructs a filter based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to establish a high-dimensional feature dataset based on the zero-sequence current of all feeders. After Principal Component Analysis and Hilbert Mapping Algorithm, the high-dimensional data are reduced to two dimensions to construct a two-dimensional feature dataset. The density-based clustering method is used to adaptively divide the data into two categories, fault data and non-fault data, so as to estimate the time of occurrence of the fault. The paper designs 11 sets of experiments including 7 common high-resistance grounding mediums to verify the accuracy of the fault time recognition of this algorithm. The accuracy of this algorithm is within 7.3 ms and it exhibits better detection performance compared to the threshold detection method.

The research and development of deep learning methods are heavily reliant on large datasets, and there is currently a lack of scene-rich datasets for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image vehicle detection. To address this issue and promote the development of SAR vehicle detection algorithms, we constructed the SAR Image dataset for VEhicle Detection (SIVED) using Ka, Ku, and X bands of data. Rotatable bounding box annotations were employed to improve positioning accuracy, and an algorithm for automatic annotation was proposed to improve efficiency. The dataset exhibits three crucial properties: richness, stability, and challenge. It comprises 1044 chips and 12,013 vehicle instances, most of which are situated in complex backgrounds. To construct a baseline, eight detection algorithms are evaluated on SIVED. The experimental results show that all detectors achieved high mean average precision (mAP) on the test set, highlighting the dataset’s stability. However, there is still room for improvement in the accuracy with respect to the complexity of the background. In summary, SIVED fills the gap in SAR image vehicle detection datasets and demonstrates good adaptability for the development of deep learning algorithms.

According to the 2020 global cancer data released by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International, gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide, with yearly increasing incidence and the second-highest fatality rate in malignancies. Despite the contemporary ambiguous molecular mechanisms in GC pathogenesis, numerous in-depth studies have demonstrated that zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) are essential for the development and progression of GC. ZFPs are a class of transcription factors with finger-like domains that bind to Zn2+ extensively and participate in gene replication, cell differentiation and tumor development. In this review, we briefly outline the roles, molecular mechanisms and the latest advances in ZFPs in GC, including eight principal aspects, such as cell proliferation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), invasion and metastasis, inflammation and immune infiltration, apoptosis, cell cycle, DNA methylation, cancer stem cells (CSCs) and drug resistance. Intriguingly, the myeloid zinc finger 1 (MZF1) possesses reversely dual roles in GC by promoting tumor proliferation or impeding cancer progression via apoptosis. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the molecular mechanism of ZFPs on GC progression will pave the solid way for screening the potentially effective diagnostic indicators, prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets of GC.

By utilizing low-grade bauxite desilication solution as raw material and adding lime after thermal reaction, adsorbent MCS was synthesized. X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the MCS, MCS-Pb, and MCS-Cu. The Freundlich model was found to be more suitable for isothermal adsorption, suggesting that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Pb2+ by MCS is not limited to monolayer adsorption. According to the results of the experiment, the maximum adsorption capacities of lead ion and copper ion were found to be Pb2+ (1921.506 mg/g) > Cu2+ (561.885 mg/g), and the adsorption was controlled by chemical reactions following pseudo-second-order kinetics. Electrolyte study results indicated that the presence of background electrolyte did not affect the adsorption of Cu2+ and Pb2+ by MCS.

In the present study, the cuticular wax morphology, composition and the relationship with storage quality in three plum cultivars of Prunus salicina ‘Kongxin’ (KXL), Prunus salicina ‘Fengtang’ (FTL) and Prunus salicina ‘Cuihong’ (CHL) were investigated during storage at room temperature of 25 ± 1 °C. The results illustrated that the highest cuticular wax concentration was discovered in KXL, followed by FTL and the lowest in CHL. The fruit wax composition of the three plum cultivars was similar and principally composed of alkanes, alcohols, fatty acids, ketones, aldehydes, esters, triterpenes and olefins. Alcohols, alkanes and triterpenes were the dominant fruit wax compounds of the three plum cultivars. After storage for 20 d at room temperature, the variation of cuticular wax crystal structure and composition showed significant cultivar-associated differences. The total wax content decreased for FTL and CHL and increased for KXL, and the wax crystal degraded and melted together over time. The higher contents of the main components in the three plum cultivars were nonacosane, 1-triacontanol, 1-heneicosanol, nonacosan-10-one, octacosanal, ursolic aldehyde and oleic acid. Alcohols, triterpenes, fatty acids and aldehydes were most dramatically correlated with the softening of fruit and storage quality, and alkanes, esters and olefins were most significantly correlated with the water loss. Nonacosane and ursolic aldehyde can enhance the water retention of fruit. Overall, this study will provide a theoretical reference for the further precise development of edible plum fruit wax.

In this study, the effect of triple-cycling heat treatment on the microstructure, phase, and compression behaviour of directed energy deposited (DED) Ti-7Mo alloy was investigated with a focus on a non-equilibrium to equilibrium microstructure transition. As a result of thermal accumulation, in situ cycling, and rapid solidification, the as-deposited sample presents a continuous gradient microstructure with α-Ti in the top region and α+β in the bottom region. After the triple-cycling heat treatment, the α+β Ti at the bottom region, which is non-equilibrium, changes to a state of equilibrium near α-Ti. Meanwhile, the microstructure becomes more uniform throughout the entire sample. The morphology of the α-Ti phase changes from acicular to a short rode-like shape with increases in the number of dimensions. In terms of the mechanical properties, both the microhardness and compression properties were improved, particularly with respect to the fracture characteristics. The heat-treated sample possesses a much higher ductility than the brittle fractural behaviour. This work provides new insights into the microstructure and property optimisation and homogenisation of DED-processed Ti-based components with cycling heat treatment.

Abstract Background A local coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case confirmed on June 11, 2020 triggered an outbreak in Beijing, China after 56 consecutive days without a newly confirmed case. Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were used to contain the source in Xinfadi (XFD) market. To rapidly control the outbreak, both traditional and newly introduced NPIs including large-scale management of high-risk populations and expanded severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) PCR-based screening in the general population were conducted in Beijing. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of the response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Beijing’s XFD market and inform future response efforts of resurgence across regions. Methods A modified susceptible–exposed–infectious–recovered (SEIR) model was developed and applied to evaluate a range of different scenarios from the public health perspective. Two outcomes were measured: magnitude of transmission (i.e., number of cases in the outbreak) and endpoint of transmission (i.e., date of containment). The outcomes of scenario evaluations were presented relative to the reality case (i.e., 368 cases in 34 days) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Results Our results indicated that a 3 to 14 day delay in the identification of XFD as the infection source and initiation of NPIs would have caused a 3 to 28-fold increase in total case number (31–77 day delay in containment). A failure to implement the quarantine scheme employed in the XFD outbreak for defined key population would have caused a fivefold greater number of cases (73 day delay in containment). Similarly, failure to implement the quarantine plan executed in the XFD outbreak for close contacts would have caused twofold greater transmission (44 day delay in containment). Finally, failure to implement expanded nucleic acid screening in the general population would have yielded 1.6-fold greater transmission and a 32 day delay to containment. Conclusions This study informs new evidence that in form the selection of NPI to use as countermeasures in response to a COVID-19 outbreak and optimal timing of their implementation. The evidence provided by this study should inform responses to future outbreaks of COVID-19 and future infectious disease outbreak preparedness efforts in China and elsewhere. Graphical abstract

HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) protein is usually upregulated after statin (HMGCR inhibitor) treatment, which inevitably diminishes its therapeutic efficacy, provoking the need for higher doses associated with adverse effects. The proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) technology has recently emerged as a powerful approach for inducing protein degradation. Nonetheless, due to their bifunctional nature, developing orally bioavailable PROTACs remains a great challenge. Herein, we identified a powerful HMGCR-targeted PROTAC (21c) comprising a VHL ligand conjugated to lovastatin acid that potently degrades HMGCR in Insig-silenced HepG2 cells (DC50 = 120 nmol/L) and forms a stable ternary complex, as predicated by a holistic modeling protocol. Most importantly, oral administration of the corresponding lactone 21b reveled favorable plasma exposures referring to both the parent 21b and the conversed acid 21c. Further in vivo studies of 21b demonstrated robust HMGCR degradation and potent cholesterol reduction in mice with diet-induced hypercholesterolemia, highlighting a promising strategy for treating hyperlipidemia and associated diseases.

Abstract The efficacy of immunotherapy is largely patient-specific due to heterogeneity in tumors. Combining statistic power from a variety of immunotherapies across cancer types, we found four biological pathways significantly correlated with patient survival following immunotherapy. The expression of immunotherapy prognostic marker genes (IPMGs) in these pathways can predict the patient survival with high accuracy not only in the TCGA cohort (89.36%) but also in two other independent cohorts (80.91%), highlighting that the activity of the IPMGs can reflect the sensitivity of the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) to immunotherapies. Using mouse models, we show that knockout of one of the IPMGs, MALT1, which is critical for the T-cell receptor signaling, can eliminate the antitumor effect of anti-PD-1 treatment completely by impairing the activation of CD8+ T cells. Notably, knockout of another IPMG, CLEC4D, a C-type lectin receptor that expressed on myeloid cells, also reduced the effect of anti-PD-1 treatment potentially through maintaining the immunosuppressive effects of myeloid cells. Our results suggest that priming TIME via activating the IPMGs may increase the response rate and the effect of immune checkpoint blockers.

Immunotherapy is widely used to treat various cancers, but patients with gastric cancer (GC), which has a high mortality rate, benefit relatively less from this therapy. Platelets are closely related to GC progression and metastasis. This study aimed to find novel potential biomarkers related to platelet function to predict GC and immunotherapy efficacy. First, based on platelet activation, signaling, and aggregation (abbreviation: function)-related genes (PFRGs), we used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression method to construct a platelet-function-related genes prognostic score (PFRGPS). PRFGPS was verified in three independent external datasets (GSE26901, GSE15459, and GSE84437) for its robustness and strong prediction performance. Our results demonstrate that PRFGPS is an independent prognostic indicator for predicting overall survival in patients with GC. In addition, prognosis, potential pathogenesis mechanisms, and the response to immunotherapy were defined via gene set enrichment analysis, tumor mutational burden, tumor microenvironment, tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE), microsatellite instability, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. We found that the high-PRFGPS subgroup had a cancer-friendly immune microenvironment, a high TIDE score, a low tumor mutational burden, and relatively low microsatellite instability. In the immunophenoscore model, the therapeutic effect on anti-PD-1 and anti-CTLA-4 in the high-PRFGPS subgroup was relatively low. In conclusion, PRFGPS could be used as a reference index for GC prognosis to develop more successful immunotherapy strategies.

BackgroundThis study explored the value of the combination of Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) for the prognosis assessment of CRC patients.MethodsThis study retrospectively enrolled 1,014 CRC patients who underwent surgery between 2012 and 2014. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were used to compare survival differences. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess risk factors associated with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Nomograms were constructed to predict the prognosis of CRC patients. Randomized internal validation was used to confirm the predictive accuracy of the prognostic nomograms.ResultsThe GNRI-CEA score was established by combining GNRI and CEA. Compared with patients with normal GNRI-CEA scores, patients with mild/moderate/severe GNRI-CEA scores had significantly lower survival (PFS, 68.99% vs. 57.75% vs. 41.34% vs. 31.36%, p < 0.001; OS, 68.99% vs. 57.75% vs. 41.34% vs. 31.36%, p < 0.001). The GNRI-CEA score is an independent factor predicting the prognosis of CRC patients. The risk of death was twofold higher in patients with low GNRI and high CEA than in those with both normal GNRI and CEA [PFS, hazard ratio (HR), 2.339; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.656–3.303; p < 0.001; OS, HR, 2.340; 95% CI, 1.645–3.329; p < 0.001]. Prognostic nomograms had good resolution and accuracy in predicting 1–5 year PFS and OS. Randomized internal validation showed that the nomograms were reliable.ConclusionThe combination of GNRI and CEA can effectively stratify the prognosis of CRC patients. The nomogram established based on the two indices can provide a personalized reference for prognostic assessment and clinical decision-making for CRC patients.

This study explores whether team-organization fit (T-O fit) and team-job fit (T-J fit) play a mediating role between team personality, team job satisfaction, and team performance. Conscientiousness and openness to experience are common antecedents of team personality. Additionally, T-O fit and T-J fit are derived from person-environment fit theory, which is used to discuss the interaction between team members and the environment that affects behavior. The research purpose is to understand the factors that affect job satisfaction and performance from a team perspective. This is different from previous studies based on an individual perspective. The research object of this study has 365 respondents from 81 teams in different industries, and the structural equation modeling is applied to the empirical analysis. The research results show that T-J fit has a significant mediating effect on team personality and team job satisfaction. The team job satisfaction has also a significant mediating effect on team personality and team performance. Therefore, when team members recognize their work, they work harder to achieve team job satisfaction and performance. This study suggests that companies not only pay attention to the work abilities of employees, but also understand the fit between them and their jobs.

ABSTRACT Cefiderocol has been approved in the United States and Europe but not in China. We aim to evaluate carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) susceptibility to cefiderocol to provide baseline data and investigate the resistance mechanism. From 2018 to 2019, 1,158 CRE isolates were collected from 23 provinces and municipalities across China. The MICs of antimicrobials were determined via the agar dilution and broth microdilution methods. Whole-genome sequencing was performed for 26 cefiderocol-resistant Escherichia coli isolates to investigate the resistance mechanism. Clone transformations were used to explore the function of cirA, pbp3, and blaNDM-5 in resistance. Among the 21 antimicrobials tested, aztreonam-avibactam had the highest antibacterial activity (98.3%), followed by cefiderocol (97.3%) and colistin (95.3%). A total of 26 E. coli isolates harboring New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase 5 (NDM-5) showed high levels of cefiderocol resistance, of which sequence type 167 (ST167) accounted for 76.9% (20/26). We found 4 amino-acid insertions (YRIN/YRIK) at position 333 of penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) in the 26 E. coli isolates, and 22 isolates had a siderophore receptor cirA premature stop codon. After obtaining the wild-type cirA supplementation, the MIC of the transformants decreased by 8 to 16 times in two cefiderocol-resistant isolates. A cefiderocol-susceptible isolate harboring NDM-5 has an MIC increased from 1 μg/mL to 64 μg/mL after cirA deletion, and the MIC decreased from 64 μg/mL to 0.5 μg/mL after blaNDM-5 deletion. The MIC of the E. coli DH5α, from which the pbp3 mutant was obtained, increased from 0.064 μg/mL to 0.25 μg/mL. Cefiderocol showed activity against most CRE in China. The resistance of ST167 E. coli to cefiderocol is a combination of the premature stop codon of cirA, pbp3 mutation, and blaNDM-5 existence. IMPORTANCE Cefiderocol, a new siderophore cephalosporin, has been approved in the United States and Europe but not in China. At present, there are almost no antimicrobial susceptibility evaluation data on cefiderocol in China. We evaluated the in vitro susceptibility of 1,158 strains of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales to cefiderocol and other antibiotics. We found that a high proportion of Escherichia coli showed high-level resistance to cefiderocol. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and molecular cloning experiments confirmed that the synergistic effect of the cirA gene premature stop codon, blaNDM-5 existence, and the pbp3 mutation is associated with high levels of cefiderocol resistance.

BackgroundHuangqi injection (HQI) is the extract of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, which is widely used in the treatment of a variety of diseases in China. It is supposed to be an important adjuvant therapy for hypertensive nephropathy.ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of HQI combined with antihypertensive drugs in the treatment of hypertensive nephropathy.Materials and MethodsWe systematically searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP), Wanfang Knowledge Service Platform (WanfangData), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane Library from their inception to April 23st, 2021. All studies were independently screened by two auditors according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Randomized controlled trials comparing HQI in combination with antihypertensive drugs vs. antihypertensive drugs alone were extracted.ResultsThe meta-analysis included 15 studies involving 1,483 participants.The effect of HQI combined with antihypertensive drugs is better than that of antihypertensive drugs alone in regulating hypertensive nephropathy for reducing 24-h urinary total protein (24 h UTP) [WMD=-0.29, 95% CI (−0.40, −0.18), P = 0.000], microalbuminuria (mALB) [WMD = −17.04, 95% CI (−23.14, −10.94), P = 0.000], serum creatinine (SCr) [WMD = −40.39, 95% CI (−70.39, −10.39), P = 0.008], systolic blood pressure (SBP) [WMD = −9.50, 95% CI (−14.64, −4.37), P = 0.000], diastolic blood pressure (DBP) [WMD = −4.588, 95% CI (−6.036, −3.140), P = 0.000], cystatin-C (Cys-c) [WMD = −0.854, 95% CI (−0.99, −0.72), P = 0.000], blood urea nitrogen (BUN) [WMD = −4.155, 95% CI (−6.152, −2.157), P = 0.000].ConclusionThe combination of HQI and antihypertensive drugs is more efficient in improving the related indexes of patients with hypertensive nephropathy than using antihypertensive drugs alone, and a moderate dose of HQI (no more than 30 mL) may benefit more. However, the quality of the methodology is low and the number of samples is small, the results need to be confirmed by more stringent randomized controlled trials.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most common muscular dystrophy. FSHD type 1 (FSHD1) is caused by multicopy contraction of D4Z4 repeats on chromosome 4q35. Human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines serve as important research models for various types of diseases in vitro. Here, we reprogrammed human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMBCs) into hiPSCs with episomal plasmid from two FSHD1 patients. These hiPSC lines maintained normal karyotype and exhibited typical morphology. Both of them could express pluripotency markers and differentiate into three layers. The hiPSC lines could be used for screening potential therapeutic targets and mechanism research.

Background and AimsMalnutrition is highly prevalent and is related to multiple impaired clinical outcomes in cancer patients. This study aimed to de novo create an objective, nutrition-related index specially for prognostic purposes in oncology populations.MethodsWe performed a multicenter cohort study including 14,134 cancer patients. The prognostic impact for each baseline characteristic was estimated by calculating Harrell's C-index. The optimal parameters reflecting the nutritional and inflammatory impact on patients' overall survival were selected to develop the fat-age-inflammation (FAIN) index. The associations of the FAIN with the nutritional status, physical performance, quality of life, short-term outcomes and mortality of patients were comprehensively evaluated. Independent external validation was performed to further assess the prognostic value of the FAIN.ResultsThe study enrolled 7,468 men and 6,666 women with a median age of 57 years and a median follow-up of 42 months. The FAIN index was defined as: (triceps skinfold thickness + albumin) / [age + 5 × (neutrophil count/lymphocyte count)]. There were significant associations of the FAIN with the nutritional status, physical performance, quality of life and short-term outcomes. The FAIN also showed better discrimination performance than the Nutritional Risk Index, the Prognostic Nutritional Index and the Controlling Nutritional Status index (all P < 0.05). In multivariable-adjusted models, the FAIN was independently associated with a reduced death hazard both as a continuous variable (HR = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.47–0.68) and per one standard deviation (HR = 0.83, 95%CI = 0.78–0.88). External validation in a multicenter lung cancer cohort (n = 227) further confirmed the prognostic value of the FAIN.ConclusionsThis study created and assessed the prognostic FAIN index, which might act as a feasible option to monitor the nutritional status and help develop intervention strategies to optimize the survival outcomes of cancer patients.

Schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are diseased groups of serious psychosis with still unknown etiology. The aim of this research was to identify the neurophysiological correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations. Revealing the neural correlates of auditory hallucination is not merely of great clinical significance, but it is also quite essential to study the pathophysiological correlates of schizophrenia. In this study, 25 Schizophrenia patients with AVHs (AVHs group, 23.2 ± 5.35 years), 52 Schizophrenia patients without AVHs (non-AVHs group, 25.79 ± 5.63 years) and 28 healthy subjects (NC group, 26.14 ± 5.45 years) were enrolled. Dynamic functional connectivity was studied with a sliding-window method and functional connectivity states were then obtained with the k-means clustering algorithm in the three groups. We found that schizophrenia patients with AVHs were characterized by significant decreased static functional connectivity and enhanced variability of dynamic functional connectivity (non-parametric permutation test, Bonferroni correction, p < 0.05). In addition, the AVHs group also demonstrated increased number of brain states, suggesting brain dynamics enhanced in these patients compared with the non-AVHs group. Our findings suggested that there were abnormalities in the connection of brain language regions in auditory verbal hallucinations. It appears that the interruption of connectivity from the language region might be critical to the pathological basis of AVHs.

Abstract Background Assessments of cortical development and identifying factors that may result in a poor prognosis for fetuses with isolated mild ventriculomegaly (IMVM) is a hot research topic. We aimed to perform a constant, detailed assessment of cortical development in IMVM fetuses using ultrasound and determine whether asymmetric cortical development occurred. Moreover, we aimed to estimate the prognosis of IMVM fetuses and compare the difference in the prognosis of IMVM fetuses presenting symmetric and asymmetric cortical maturation. Methods IMVM was diagnosed by regular ultrasound, neurosonography and fetal MRI. Genetic and TORCH examinations were conducted to exclude common genetic abnormalities and TORCH infection of fetuses. Ultrasound examinations were conducted at an interval of 2–3 weeks to record sulcus development in IMVM fetuses using a scoring system. The neonatal behavioral neurological assessment (NBNA), the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, First Edition (BSID-I) were performed after birth. Results Forty fetuses with IMVM were included: twenty showed asymmetric cortical maturation and twenty showed symmetric cortical maturation. For IMVM fetuses presenting asymmetric cortical maturation, the mean gestational age (GA) at the first diagnosis of relatively delayed development was 24.23 weeks for the parieto-occipital sulcus, 24.71 weeks for the calcarine sulcus, and 26.43 weeks for the cingulate sulcus. All the sulci with delayed development underwent ‘catch-up growth’ and developed to the same grade as the sulci of the other hemisphere. The mean GA at which the two sides developed to the same grade was 29.40 weeks for the parieto-occipital sulcus, 29.30 weeks for the calcarine sulcus and 31.27 weeks for the cingulate sulcus. The NBNA, ASQ-3 and BSID-I scores of all patients were in the normal range. Conclusions IMVM fetuses may show mild asymmetric cortical maturation in the second trimester, but the relatively delayed sulci undergo ‘catch-up growth’. The neurodevelopment of IMVM fetuses presenting asymmetric cortical maturation and ‘catch-up growth’ is not statistically significantly different from IMVM fetuses presenting symmetric cortical maturation.

In this study, the development of surface features of Inconel 718 samples fabricated by selective laser melting under different laser powers and scanning speeds has been studied and correlated with the powder melting behaviors through both experimental and modeling approaches. The interaction between laser beam and powder particles was studied by a three-dimensional model using the height function-lattice Boltzmann method. Different process parameters were introduced to perform the simulations, revealing the underlying physics of the surface morphology. Through the calculation of the surface forces, some new insights were given about the powder melting behaviors and the resultant surface features. It was found that the surface tension rather than recoil pressure pulled the melted powder into the molten pool during the SLM process. As for low energy input, the powder tended to fuse together with the neighboring particles before entering the molten pool, which was found to be the main cause of the formation of surface fluctuations and the subsequent surface pores. To some extent, the existence of recoil pressure was favorable for a relatively stable flow and a flat surface morphology. The simulation results of the top surface morphology were compared with experimental results, and they were in good agreement.

Objective(s): Acute renal ischemia may cause acute renal dysfunction due to lack of blood supply; the manifestations are renal tubular cell apoptosis, infiltration of macrophages, and microvascular destruction. Many studies have shown that erythropoietin (EPO) and vitamin D3 (VD3) can be used to prevent or treat renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, and VD3 may interact with EPO. In the present study, the effects of the combination of VD3 and EPO in I/R acute kidney injury were studied. Materials and Methods: Rats were divided into 5 groups: sham-operated (SHAM), AKI without treatment (AKI-control), AKI treatment with VD3(AKI+VD3), AKI treatment with EPO(AKI+EPO), AKI treatment with VD3 and EPO(AKI+VD3+EPO). The effects of the combination of VD3 and EPO on AKI were assessed by histologic, inflammation, and apoptosis studies.Results: The degree of damage in renal tissue was significantly reduced in VD3, EPO, and combined groups. Combination therapy with VD3 and EPO markedly improved Creatinine clearance rate (CCr). The combined treatment group showed the lowest F4/80+ and CD68+ expressions. The expression of Bcl-2 in the combined treatment group was higher than those in VD3 group and the EPO group, while Bax’s expression goes in the opposite direction.Conclusion: This provides further evidence that VD3 and EPO have beneficial effects in I/R injury via anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis pathways. The synergistic protective effect of VD3 and EPO is of profound significance in the development of new strategies for the prevention and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI).

State of charge (SoC) imbalance and dc bus voltage deviations are significant issues for distributed battery energy storage systems in autonomous dc microgrid applications. Accordingly, a high-pass filter (HPF) based SoC balancing method is proposed to achieve SoC balance by considering different SoCs and capacities; A band-pass filter (BPF) based power droop control is used to accomplish power-sharing and voltage compensation. Through this approach, battery storage units (BSUs) with higher SoC and capacity deliver more power during discharging mode than those with lower SoC and capacity. During charging mode, those BSUs with higher SoC and lower capacity are controlled to absorb less power than those with higher capacity and lower SoC. Therefore, SoC balance can be achieved between distributed BSUs. Further, the dc bus voltage is maintained within the desired range by adopting the proposed method. In addition, the control method employed also considers the impact of line resistance. The proposed control strategy is implemented in a fully decentralized way which does not require any communication link, while maintaining system stability. MATLAB/Simulink and processor-in-the loop (PIL) simulation results verify that the proposed control strategy is effective and feasible.

AbstractObjective Low triiodothyronine syndrome (LT3S) is a common endocrine disease in preterm neonates. Various serious acute or chronic diseases result in LT3S. Few studies have investigated the causal relationship between perinatal factors and LT3S in preterm neonates with a gestational age (GA) of 28–35 weeks. The present study comprehensively analyzed the perinatal factors of LT3S in preterm neonates.Methods This was a retrospective study of neonates with and without LT3S from January 2018 to November 2019. Compared to 206 preterm neonates without LT3S, 158 neonates were diagnosed with LT3S, excluding neonates with congenital malformations, other endocrine diseases, genetic diseases and inherited metabolic diseases.Results Five perinatal risk factors for LT3S were confirmed using univariate and multivariate analyses: smaller gestational age, lower birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), neonatal sepsis, and dopamine use.Conclusions LT3S in preterm neonates was associated with multiple perinatal factors, including smaller gestational age, lower birth weight, RDS, sepsis, and dopamine use. Preterm neonates with a GA of 28–35 weeks who are exposed to a series of high-risk perinatal factors must be closely observed, diagnosed early and treated for primary diseases promptly to reduce the occurrence of LT3S and improve the outcomes.Key Message:Few studies have investigated the relationship between perinatal factors and Low triiodothyronine syndrome (LT3S) in preterm neonates with a gestational age (GA) of 28-35 weeks.LT3S was associated with multiple perinatal factors, including smaller gestational age, lower birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), sepsis, and dopamine use.

Botryosphaeria dothidea is the source of the deadly kiwifruit disease known as soft rot. In order to explore the role of melatonin in regulating the postharvest quality and disease resistance of kiwifruit at different growth and development stages, in this study, we applied melatonin at different concentrations to kiwifruit at the young fruit, expansion, and late expansion stages to assess its effect on fruit resistance to B. dothidea, minimize soft rot, and maintain postharvest fruit quality. The results showed that melatonin significantly suppressed the mycelial growth of B. dothidea, with 1.0 mmol/L melatonin inhibiting it by up to 50%. However, 0.1–0.3 mmol/L melatonin had the best control over soft rot. Furthermore, spraying MT during kiwifruit growth can successfully increase fruit weight; preserve postharvest fruit firmness; reduce respiration intensity in the early stages of storage; delay the rise in soluble solids, while maintaining a high titratable acid content to ensure suitable solid acid ratio; increase total phenol, flavonoid, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and ascorbic acid contents; and delay the rise in soluble sugar contents in the late stages of storage. These results have a positive effect on maintaining the nutritional composition of kiwifruit. However, the effects on weight loss, dry matter content, and soluble protein content were not significant. In addition, the results of the principal component analysis demonstrated that 0.3 mmol/L MT increased kiwifruit’s resistance to soft rot while preserving postharvest fruit quality.

The access control (AC) system in an IoT (Internet of Things) context ensures that only authorized entities have access to specific devices and that the authorization procedure is based on pre-established rules. Recently, blockchain-based AC systems have gained attention within research as a potential solution to the single point of failure issue that centralized architectures may bring. Moreover, zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology is included in blockchain-based AC systems to address the issue of sensitive data leaking. However, current solutions have two problems: (1) systems built by these works are not adaptive to high-traffic IoT environments because of low transactions per second (TPS) and high latency; (2) these works cannot fully guarantee that all user behaviors are honest. In this work, we propose a blockchain-based AC system with zero-knowledge rollups to address the aforementioned issues. Our proposed system implements zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups) of access control, where different AC authorization requests can be grouped into the same batch to generate a uniform ZKP, which is designed specifically to guarantee that participants can be trusted. In low-traffic environments, sufficient experiments show that the proposed system has the least AC authorization time cost compared to existing works. In high-traffic environments, we further prove that based on the ZK-rollups optimization, the proposed system can reduce the authorization time overhead by 86%. Furthermore, the security analysis is presented to show the system’s ability to prevent malicious behaviors.

Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets play a crucial role in energy conversion and electronic devices. The essential magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B magnets, particularly coercivity and remanent magnetization, are significantly influenced by the phase characteristics and microstructure. In this work, Nd-Fe-B magnets were manufactured using vacuum induction melting (VIM), laser directed energy deposition (LDED) and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technologies. The microstructure evolution and phase selection of Nd-Fe-B magnets were then clarified in detail. The results indicated that the solidification velocity ( V ) and cooling rate ( R ) are key factors in the phase selection. In terms of the VIM-casting Nd-Fe-B magnet, a large volume fraction of the α -Fe soft magnetic phase (39.7 vol.%) and Nd _2 Fe _17 B _x metastable phase (34.7 vol.%) are formed due to the low R (2.3 × 10 ^−1 °C s ^−1 ), whereas only a minor fraction of the Nd _2 Fe _14 B hard magnetic phase (5.15 vol.%) is presented. For the LDED-processed Nd-Fe-B deposit, although the Nd _2 Fe _14 B hard magnetic phase also had a low value (3.4 vol.%) as the values of V (10 ^−2 m s ^−1 ) and R (1.45 × 10 ^6 °C s ^−1 ) in the LPBF process resulted in the substantial formation of the Nd _2 Fe _14 B hard magnetic phase (55.8 vol.%) directly from the liquid, while the α -Fe soft magnetic phase and Nd _2 Fe _17 B _x metastable phase precipitation are suppressed in the LPBF-processed Nd-Fe-B magnet. Additionally, crystallographic texture analysis reveals that the LPBF-processed Nd-Fe-B magnets exhibit isotropic magnetic characteristics. Consequently, the LPBF-processed Nd-Fe-B deposit, exhibiting a coercivity of 656 kA m ^−1 , remanence of 0.79 T and maximum energy product of 71.5 kJ m ^−3 , achieved an acceptable magnetic performance, comparable to other additive manufacturing processed Nd-Fe-B magnets from MQP (Nd-lean) Nd-Fe-B powder.

Extremely rapid heating and cooling rates during the additive manufacturing (AM) process generate complicated thermal cycles, which affect the microstructure evolution and ultimate mechanical properties of the alloy. In this paper, FGH96 blocks with a height of 6 mm were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) and the microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Comparing specimens of varying heights, it was found that subsequent thermal cycles (STC) coarsened some solidified grains and accelerated the grain growth along the build direction, together with an increase in texture intensity and high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). After coarsening the grains in the middle portion of the built block, finer grains were observed near the top area due to a faster cooling rate. There were numerous dislocations in the grain because of the occurrence of unequal internal tension. In the middle of the sample with stable thermal cycles, the dislocations were both perpendicular to the grain growth direction and 45° off it. In spite of the texture characteristics, the segregation of elements was also found to be influenced by thermal cycling. Inherent reheating leads to the increase in the Laves phase and the decrease in the γ’ phase as subsequent deposition. This was also one of the reasons why the microhardness of the sample decreased as the building height and the other reason being the decrease in the solution treatment of the later sediments.

Abstract Background The number of cancer patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is steadily rising. Little is known about the nutritional status of this population. This study characterized the nutritional status and survival of cancer patients with diabetes compared with those without diabetes. Methods A total of 8247 cancer patients were prospectively enrolled from 72 hospitals in China and followed until August 2019. A global estimation of the nutritional status was performed for each participant using standardized tools. The outcomes were cancer‐specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS). Results The incidence of diabetes was 7.6% in the whole population. In comparison with the non‐DM group, the DM group had greater body weight, but a similar fat‐free mass, a lower handgrip strength and a decreased Karnofsky performance score. A higher proportion of patients with diabetes were overweight/obese as indicated by BMI. The percentage of patients who were at risk of malnutrition (evaluated by PG‐SGA) was higher in the DM group (score ≥ 4, 56.7% vs 52.9%). Patients with DM showed a worse CSS (4‐year CSS, 62% vs 73%) and OS (4‐year OS 39% vs 52%). Diabetes was associated with an increased risk of both cancer‐specific (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.282, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.070‐1.536) and overall (HR = 1.206, 95% CI 1.040‐1.399) mortality. Conclusions Cancer patients with diabetes had a larger body mass but lower muscle strength, poorer performance status and higher incidence of malnourishment. Diabetes was associated with compromised survival. Tailored nutritional intervention is necessary for this subpopulation of patients.

Abstract Background The allocation of resources between offspring size and number is a central question of life-history theory. Although several studies have tested the existence of this trade-off, few studies have investigated how environmental variation influences the allocation of resources to offspring size and offspring number. Additionally, the relationship between population dynamics and the offspring size and number allocation is far less understood. Methods We investigate whether resource allocation between egg size and clutch size is influenced by the ambient temperature and whether it may be related to apparent nest survival rate. We measured 1548 eggs from 541 nests of two closely related shorebird species, the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) and the White-faced Plover (C. dealbatus) in China, in four populations that exhibit contrasting ambient environments. We weighed females, monitored nest survival, and calculated the variance of ambient temperature. Results Although we found that egg size and clutch size were all different between the four breeding populations, the reproductive investment (i.e. total clutch volume) was similar between populations. We also found that populations with a high survival rate had relatively larger eggs and a smaller clutch than populations with a low nest survival rate. The latter result is in line with a conservative/diversified bet-hedging strategy. Conclusions Our findings suggest that plovers may increasing fitness by investing fewer, larger or many, small according local nest survival rate to make a similar investment in reproduction, and thereby may have an impact on population demography.

ObjectivesThe relationship between cerebral ischemic stroke and left ventricular function evaluated by echocardiography has been emphasized. Whether lesions in different cerebral artery regions would result in left ventricular dysfunction remains uncertain.MethodsPatients were divided into middle cerebral artery (MCA) (n = 79), posterior cerebral artery (PCA) (n = 64), basilar artery (BA) regions (n = 66), and no-ischemic stroke group (n = 209). We retrospectively collected demographic characteristics, hematologic parameters, and ECG results, and a comparison of echocardiographic parameters was performed to determine the relationship between ischemic stroke and left ventricular function.ResultsA total of 418 patients were included. Demographic characteristics did not significantly differ between the ischemic stroke and non-ischemic stroke groups, except for a history of drinking (p < 0.001). Homocysteine levels in the MCA group were higher than those in the PCA and BA groups (p < 0.05). The highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level was higher in the ischemic stroke group than in the non-ischemic stroke one (p = 0.001). A higher incidence of ST-T changes in the ECG and lower levels of potassium and magnesium in the ischemic stroke group were found. Significant differences in diastolic function between groups were noted, and the early mitral inflow velocity, annular early diastolic velocity, and ratio between the mitral annular early diastolic velocity and mitral annulus atrial inflow velocity in the MCA group were lower than those in the BA group (p < 0.05).ConclusionsIschemic strokes exhibited a negative effect on left ventricular diastolic function by echocardiography, especially in MCA region infarcts. These results are of great importance for neurologists as they highlight the need for left ventricular function evaluation after stroke to regulate therapy strategies in time.

BackgroundTriple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is refractory and heterogeneous, comprising various entities with divergent phenotype, biology, and clinical presentation. As an aggressive subtype, Chinese TNBC patients with special morphologic patterns (STs) were restricted to its incidence of 10-15% in total TNBC population.MethodsWe recruited 89 patients with TNBC at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital (GDPH) from October 2014 to May 2021, comprising 72 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma of no-special type (NSTs) and 17 cases of STs. The clinical data of these patients was collected and statistically analyzed. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissues and matched blood samples were collected for targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) with cancer-related, 520- or 33-gene assay. We propose a stacked convolutional neural network incorporating a novel and efficient pyramid residual attention (PRA) module for the task of automatic segmentation of dermoscopic images. Precise segmentation is a significant and challenging step for computer-aided diagnosis technology in skin lesion diagnosis and treatment. The proposed PRA has the following characteristics: First, we concentrate on three widely used modules in the PRA. The purpose of the pyramid structure is to extract the feature information of the lesion area at different scales, the residual means is aimed to ensure the efficiency of model training, and the attention mechanism is used to screen effective features maps. Thanks to the PRA, our network can still obtain precise boundary information that distinguishes healthy skin from diseased areas for the blurred lesion areas. Secondly, the proposed PRA can increase the segmentation ability of a single module for lesion regions through efficient stacking. The third, we incorporate the idea of encoder-decoder into the architecture of the overall network. Compared with the traditional networks, we divide the segmentation procedure into three levels and construct the pyramid residual attention network (PRAN). The shallow layer mainly processes spatial information, the middle layer refines both spatial and semantic information, and the deep layer intensively learns semantic information. The basic module of PRAN is PRA, which is enough to ensure the efficiency of the three-layer architecture network. We extensively evaluate our method on ISIC2017 and ISIC2018 datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that PRAN can obtain better segmentation performance comparable to state-of-the-art deep learning models under the same experiment environment conditions.

Under the background of global cross-border mobile commerce (m-commerce) integration, the importance of cross-border payment research is becoming increasingly prominent and urgent. The important value of this study is to empirically research the influence power of key elements in using two different mobile payment (m-payment) platforms in Korea. The extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) has been widely applied in various studies because of its strong interpretive power. In Korea, there are a few empirical studies on Chinese users. Based on a survey of 908 Chinese participants (486 WeChat Pay’s Chinese users and 465 Kakao Pay’s Korean users) in Korea, this study is one application extending UTAUT2 by incorporating multi-group and multi-model constructs: UTAUT2, information system success (ISS) model, and an initial trust model (ITM), considering a multi-group analysis with some mediating variables (payment difference). By comparing the two different payment platforms’ characters, this manuscript provides a set of targeted measures to ensure Chinese WeChat Payment platform decision-makers create effective long-term strategic policies for cross-border m-payments in Korea, and eventually, benefit cross-border m-commerce and economic cooperation in Southeast Asia.

Exploring the complex spatiotemporal changes and colonization mechanism of microbial communities will enable microbial communities to be better used to serve agricultural and ecological operations. In addition, evaluating the impact of transgenic plants on endogenous microbial communities is necessary for their commercial application. In this study, microbial communities of Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ carrying Cry1Ac-Cry3A-BADH genes (ECAA1 line), Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ carrying Cry1Ac-Cry3A-NTHK1 genes (ECAB1 line), and non-transgenic Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ from rhizosphere soil, roots, and phloem collected in different seasons were compared and analyzed. Our analyses indicate that the richness and diversity of bacterial communities were higher in the three Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ habitats than in those of fungi. Bacterial and fungal genetic-distance-clustering results were similar; rhizosphere soil clustered in one category, with roots and phloem in another. The diversity and evenness values of the microbial community were: rhizosphere soil > phloem > root system. The bacterial communities in the three habitats were dominated by the Proteobacteria, and fungal communities were dominated by the Ascomycota. The community composition and abundance of each part were quite different; those of Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ were similar among seasons, but community abundance fluctuated. Seasonal fluctuation in the bacterial community was greatest in rhizosphere soil, while that of the fungal community was greatest in phloem. The transgenic lines ECAA1 and ECAB1 had a bacterial and fungal community composition similar to that of the control samples, with no significant differences in community structure or diversity among the lines. The abundances of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were low, and differed significantly among the lines. These differences did not affect the functioning of the whole specific community. Sampling time and location were the main driving factors of changes in the Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ microbial community. Transgenic events did not affect the Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ rhizosphere or endophytic microbial communities. This study provides a reference for the safety evaluation of transgenic plants and the internal colonization mechanism of microorganisms in plants.

Summary: Background: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 1 (FSHD1) is a rare disease, which is often underdiagnosed due to its heterogeneous presentations and complex molecular genetic basis, leading to a lack of population-based epidemiology data, especially of prevalence and disease progression. Methods: Fujian Neuromedical Centre (FNMC) is a diagnosis centre for clinical-genetic FSHD in China, and the only one employing pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE)-based Southern blotting for all FSHD1 genetic tests. Three sources distributed across all six spatial zones in China, were used to obtain information regarding FSHD1 events, namely, FNMC, Genetic and Myopathy Group (branches of the Neurology Society of the Chinese Medical Association), and “FSHD-China” (an organization supported by FSHD patients). During 2001-2020, all genetically-confirmed FSHD1 from China were registered in FNMC. Follow-up was conducted in the 20-year period to obtain data on disease progression, which was mainly described in terms of independent ambulation loss. Findings: Of the 1,744 FSHD1 genetic tests (total test number 1,802) included in the analysis, 997 (57.2%) patients from 620 families were diagnosed with FSHD1. The estimated prevalence of genetically-confirmed FSHD1 in China is 0.75 per million (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70-0.79) during 2001-2020, with 0.78 (95% CI, 0.72-0.85) in males and 0.71 (95% CI, 0.65-0.78) in females. The estimated prevalence increased from 0.22 (95% CI, 0.19-0.26) per million in 2001-2015 to 0.53 (95% CI, 0.49-0.57) per million in 2016-2020 (p < 0.001). The prevalence in Fujian province was 7.10 per million, 4.66 per million, and 2.44 per million, during 2001-2020, 2001-2015, and 2016-2020, respectively. Among the 861 symptomatic plus asymptomatic patients of the total 997 patients, the median onset age at first-ever muscle weakness was 16 years of age (range 1-81); the median number of contracted D4Z4 repeats was 5 units (range 1-9); the median 4qA-allele-specific methylation level was 41% (range 14%-69%). Of the 977 symptomatic patients followed-up during 2001-2020, 117 patients (12.0%) lost independent ambulation. The expected duration from onset of first-ever muscle weakness to onset of independent ambulation loss was 40 years. The group with loss of independent ambulation had a smaller number of contracted D4Z4 repeats (p < 0.001) and had an earlier onset age of first-ever muscle weakness (p < 0.001) compared to the group without loss of independent ambulation. Interpretation: Our research captures the largest genetically-confirmed FSHD1 population worldwide, to calculate its prevalence of 0.75 per million in China from 2001 to 2020. Approximately 12.0% of symptomatic plus asymptomatic patients of FSHD1 will lose independent ambulation in 40 years from onset of first-ever muscle weakness. Purpose. We aimed to examine the effects of 125I seeds on the gene expression of Bcl-2, Bax, and PI3K/Akt pathway components in cholangiocarcinoma cells. Methods. In vitro, human cholangiocarcinoma RBE cells were treated with 125I seeds (0.39 mCi or 0.85 mCi) for 72 h, 120 h, and 168 h. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was detected by RT-PCR, and Western blotting was carried out to explore changes in Akt activity. Result. 125I seeds inhibited the proliferation of RBE cells. The apoptosis rate of the RBE cells in the low-activity group was significantly higher than that in the high-activity group at 120 h and 168 h, while no difference was found between the two groups at 72 h. After 120 h of culture, the gene expression of Bcl-2 and Bax decreased in both groups, the ratio of Bcl−2/Bax in the low-activity group decreased, and the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway was inhibited in both groups. Conclusion. 125I seeds affect the proliferation and apoptosis of cholangiocarcinoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. The therapeutic effect of low-activity 125I seeds on cancer cells may be better. 125I seed brachytherapy may promote the apoptosis of cholangiocarcinoma cells by inhibiting the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and regulating the Bcl−2/Bax ratio.

Two coordination polymers involving Cd(II), i.e., [Cd2(IDPA)2(bpe) (H2O)2]n·2n(H2O) (1) (H2IDPA is 5-(1-oxoisoindolin-2-yl)isophthalic acid, bpe is 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, 4-bpmh is N, N-bis-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-hydrazine), and [Cd(IDPA)(4-bpmh)0.5(H2O)2]n·n(H2O) (2) are prepared under solvothermal conditions via tuning the auxiliary ligand from bpe to 4-bpmh. Moreover, the as-prepared complexes 1–2 reveal much stronger luminescence in contrast to that of the free organic ligands. Their preventive effect and mechanism on scar formation after cosmetic surgery was explored. First, the two complexes’ suppression of the viability of the human immortal keratinocyte line (HaCaT) cell line was examined via exploiting cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) detection. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signal pathway activation in HaCaT cells was detected by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay.
