We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe2S3-x Se x (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 3) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron-diffraction, muon-spin-relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe2S3) to Pnma (BaFe2Se3) was identified around x = 0.7 - 1. Neutron-diffraction measurements on the samples with x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the Néel temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from ~120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe2+ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe2Se3 remains robust for 1.5 ⩽ x ⩽ 3 with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the Néel temperature from 250 K (x = 3) to 225 K (x = 1.5). The sample with x = 1 near the Cmcm and Pnma border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all x, but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the Cmcm stripe phase to the Pnma block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe2S3-x Se x system.

We report a comprehensive study of the spin ladder compound BaFe2S2.5Se0.5 using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, high pressure synchrotron diffraction, and high pressure transport techniques. We find that BaFe2S2.5Se0.5 possesses the same Cmcm structure and stripe antiferromagnetic order as does BaFe2S3, but with a reduced Néel temperature of TN=98 K compared to 120 K for the undoped system, and a slightly increased ordered moment of 1.40μB per iron. The low-energy spin excitations in BaFe2S2.5Se0.5 are likewise similar to those observed in BaFe2S3. However, unlike the reports of superconductivity in BaFe2S3 below Tc∼14 K under pressures of 10 GPa or more, we observe no superconductivity in BaFe2S2.5Se0.5 at any pressure up to 19.7 GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits an upturn at low temperature under pressure. Furthermore, we show that additional high-quality samples of BaFe2S3 synthesized for this study likewise fail to become superconducting under pressure, instead displaying a similar upturn in resistivity at low temperature. These results demonstrate that microscopic, sample-specific details play an important role in determining the ultimate electronic ground state in this spin ladder system. We suggest that the upturn in resistivity at low temperature in both BaFe2S3 and BaFe2S2.5Se0.5 may result from Anderson localization induced by S vacancies and random Se substitutions, enhanced by the quasi-one-dimensional ladder structure.

The relevance of magnetic, structural, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) and related materials occupies a central focus in condensed matter physics. While the majority of iron-based materials exhibit the same two-dimensional iron square lattice structural motif, a family of AFe2X3 (X = Se,S) compounds introduces a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ladder motif, which resembles the two-legged spin ladder copper oxide materials. Furthermore, unlike most parent compounds of FeSCs, the members of this spin ladder family are insulators. Recently, a superconducting transition has been observed under pressure with Tc up to 24 K, similar to the pressure-induced superconductivity in the copper oxide ladder Sr14−xCaxCu24O41 material, stimulating much interest. Here, we review the magnetic, structural, and electronic properties in this family, particularly in the BaFe2X3 series tuned by pressure and by chemical substitution. The established pressure-temperature (P-T) and carrier concentration-temperature (x-T) phase diagrams in related materials provide useful information to extend the variety of high-temperature superconductors and compare with other FeSCs. We also review some essential information about analogous square lattice FeSCs.

With the booming development of rehabilitation medicine engineering in recent years, the role of lower limb exoskeletal robotic systems in the treatment of walking function recovery of post⁃stroke has received much attention. This paper intends to classify and summarize the lower limb exoskeletal robotic systems used for walking function recovery at different periods of stroke, summarize the mechanism of improving walking function, and review the impact of lower limb exoskeletal robotic systems on the walking function of stroke patients at different periods, current challenges and future development direction, in order to promote the clinical application of lower limb exoskeletal robotic systems.

Highly degenerate n-type CdO with high electron mobility is a promising transparent conducting oxide (TCO) for optoelectronic devices utilizing a spectrum in the Vis-NIR range. In particular, it has been shown that doped CdO thin films can show much superior transparency of >80% in the NIR region compared to conventional transparent conducting oxide (e.g., Sn-doped In2O3) thin films with a similar sheet resistance. However, CdO thin films typically experience rapid degradation in their electron mobilities when exposed to environmental conditions with H2O moisture. Here, we studied the effects of thermal annealing on the environmental stability of In-doped CdO (CdO:In) using a combination of different analytical techniques. CdO:In thin films with different In concentration (0%–8.3%) synthesized by magnetron sputtering were subjected to different post-thermal annealing (PTA) and then aged in different environmental conditions with varying relative humidity (RH) in the range of 0%–85%. Our results reveal that the degradation of CdO:In thin films can be primarily attributed to the oxygen vacancy-related defects at the grain boundaries, which can readily react with the OH− in the moisture. The moisture induced degradation can be mitigated by appropriate PTA at high temperatures (>400 °C) where grain boundary defects, primarily associated with Cd vacancies, can be passivated through hydrogen (H), thus enhancing their environmental stability. The present study provides a comprehensive understanding of the instability mechanisms and defect passivation in transparent conducting CdO:In thin films, which can also be relevant for other wide gap oxides. Classical probability of informed trading (PIN) models assume that, given the information scenario, the number of buy and sell order flows are independently Poisson distributed, which imposes an assumption on the probability of no-trades. However, empirical data shows that the implied probabilities of no-trades do not match the aforementioned Poisson and independent assumptions. Therefore, we propose a new PIN model that better fits the data by using zero-inflated Poisson distributions and copula functions, which allow us to match the probability of no-trades. The expectation conditional maximization (ECM) is further proposed to tackle the parameter fittings, which is verified by simulation studies. The empirical studies show that this model outperforms the original PIN models, with significant parameters on the zero-inflations as well as copulas. In particular, we find that it is possible for an information to simultaneously increase the probability of no trade and boost up the average number of transactions, which contradicts the intuition.

Neutron and x-ray total scattering measurements have been performed on powder samples of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe. Using pair distribution function analysis of the total scattering data to investigate short-range atomic correlations, we establish the existence of an instantaneous, local orthorhombic structural distortion attributable to nematic fluctuations that persists well into the high-temperature tetragonal phase, at least up to 300 K and likely to significantly higher temperatures. This short-range orthorhombic distortion is correlated over a length scale of about 1 nm at 300 K and grows to several nm as the temperature is lowered toward the long-range structural transition temperature. In the low-temperature nematic state, the local instantaneous structure exhibits an enhanced orthorhombic distortion relative to the average structure with a typical relaxation length of 3 nm. The quantitative characterization of these orthorhombic fluctuations sheds light on nematicity in this canonical iron-based superconductor.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used as an in vitro model system of DNA replication to assess the genotoxicity of nanoparticles (NPs). Prior results showed that several types of NPs inhibited PCR efficiency and increased amplicon error frequency. In this study, we examined the effects of various metal oxide NPs on inhibiting PCR, using high- vs. low-fidelity DNA polymerases; we also examined NP-induced DNA mutation bias at the single nucleotide level. The effects of seven major types of metal oxide NPs (Fe2O3, ZnO, CeO2, Fe3O4, Al2O3, CuO, and TiO2) on PCR replication via a low-fidelity DNA polymerase (Ex Taq) and a high-fidelity DNA polymerase (Phusion) were tested. The successfully amplified PCR products were subsequently sequenced using high-throughput amplicon sequencing. Using consistent proportions of NPs and DNA, we found that the effects of NPs on PCR yield differed depending on the DNA polymerase. Specifically, the efficiency of the high-fidelity DNA polymerase (Phusion) was significantly inhibited by NPs during PCR; such inhibition was not evident in reactions with Ex Taq. Amplicon sequencing showed that the overall error rate of NP-amended PCR was not significantly different from that of PCR without NPs (p > 0.05), and NPs did not introduce single nucleotide polymorphisms during PCR. Thus, overall, NPs inhibited PCR amplification in a DNA polymerase-specific manner, but mutations were not introduced in the process.

Ammonia gas sensors are very essential in many industries and everyday life. However, their complicated fabrication process, severe environmental fabrication requirements and desorption of residual ammonia molecules result in high cost and hinder their market acceptance. Here, laser direct writing is used to fabricate three parallel porous 3D graphene lines on a polyimide (PI) tape to simply construct an ammonia gas sensor. The middle one works as an ammonia sensing element and the other two on both sides work as heaters to improve the desorption performance of the sensing element to ammonia gas molecules. The graphene lines were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The response and recovery time of the sensor without heating are 214 s and 222 s with a sensitivity of 0.087% ppm-1 for sensing 75 ppm ammonia gas, respectively. The experimental results prove that under the optimized heating temperature of about 70 °C the heaters successfully help implement complete desorption of residual NH₃ showing a good sensitivity and cyclic stability.
